Gray Line provides exciting guided tours to Hoover Dam and Lake Mead that will fit both your schedule and your budget.

Why Visit Hoover Dam?

Hoover Dam is one of the most impressive man-made engineering feats in the world. As one of the biggest and most successful government projects of its time, the project was actually completed on time and under budget during the Great Depression… something that seems unheard of by today’s standards!

To this day, Hoover Dam provides water and hydroelectric power to the entire southwest region of the United States. Our in-depth tours will bring Hoover Dam to life with engaging tour guides, stunning photo opportunities, and a comfortable ride to and from your Las Vegas hotel.

Why Visit Lake Mead?

Formed by Hoover Dam's taming effects on the Colorado River, Lake Mead is one of the largest reservoirs in the United States. A shockingly beautiful body of fresh water right in the middle of the desert, Las Vegas locals and tourists alike visit this oasis for fun water sports, camping, and to escape the Las Vegas heat.

Check out our Lake Mead tours below for an exciting day trip away from the crowds. A relaxing cruise on the Desert Princess paddlewheel boat is one of our most popular tour requests!

High and Mighty

The Hoover Dam was no simple undertaking. It took serious guts. You have to be brave to suggest building what was once the tallest dam in the world. You have to be brave to be the guy on site, every day, building it. And to this day, you have to be brave to peek over the edge, 900 feet above the earth.

As a groundbreaking engineering project and the biggest dam of its time, the Hoover Dam is a modern wonder that can’t be missed. The Hoover Dam Tour Center is open every day of the year, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. except Thanksgiving and Christmas. Tickets sold until 4:15 p.m. Recommend visitors arrive by 3 p.m.

The Hoover Dam has limited access at this time. For the most up to date information, please visit  https://www.usbr.gov/lc/hooverdam/ .

More than Just a Lake

You may be familiar with Lake Mohave or Lake Mead. You may have even fished, floated, swam or boated in one of these incredible lakes. But that’s just 13 percent of Lake Mead National Recreation Area . The rest is a land of trails, scenic drives and campsites, waiting to be uncovered.

The recreation area is open 24/7, year-round. The Lake Mead Visitors Center is open 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. daily.

Shaka Guide's Hoover Dam and Lake Mead Itinerary

December 02, 2023

Hoover Dam is the biggest reservoir in the United States and a feat of engineering. It is also one of the biggest tourist destinations in America.

It spans the Colorado River and Lake Mead, and two states (Nevada and Arizona.)

It’s only about 25 miles east of Las Vegas, so people from all over the world who are flying into the city for gaming and entertainment also choose this day trip.

Whether by renting their car or taking one of the many tour buses that offer transportation.

With Shaka Guide, you get to navigate through so much more than a tour bus would, and on your time frame, by making your own choices.

tourists watching the beauty of hoover dam

And what others may not tell you is that there is so much more to see than ‘just’ Hoover Dam.

Although everyone can see Lake Mead from the rim of Hoover Dam, many don’t realize all that the Lake Mead National Recreation Area has to offer.

And still others don’t know much about Boulder City, either. (It’s the town that Hoover Dam calls home. And the historic downtown district has a lot to offer.)

hoover dam downlaod tour map

This Shaka Guide tour gives you options for a little bit of everything:

  • A few iconic spots in the city of Las Vegas at the beginning and the end of this tour
  • some things to do in Boulder City
  • Hoover Dam itself, along the incredible bridge that towers over it, and
  • then some awesome scenic driving overlooks, and hikes at Lake Mead

On the way back to Las Vegas, you’ll be treated to a special Shaka Guide route through the Mojave Desert, complete with lava-capped mountains and so much more to feast your eyes upon.

If you were just driving straight through today’s tour route, you could do the whole thing in under two hours.

However, you’re here to explore and experience, right? With 14 stops on this tour and 27 points of narration, you’re more likely to need a full eight hours to enjoy all of the activities and points of interest that Shaka Guide will suggest.

1. The “Welcome to Fabulous Las Vegas” sign

las vegas sign

Approximate time: 10 minutes

The iconic “Welcome to Fabulous Las Vegas'' sign is pretty cool to pose in front of for a photo.

This stop is so popular that it's even got its own dedicated, free parking lot smack in the median of the Las Vegas Strip!

Busloads of tourists stop to see the sign and line up for a photo with it, and, from what I hear, if you get there during popular daytime hours, hawkers are trying to charge you for a photo.

But if you decide to start this Shaka Guide tour at daybreak, you not only have the sign to yourself for a photo, but you also get a beautiful sunrise silhouette of the private jets across the street that the celebrities use to fly in and out of Vegas.

In any case, since it’s a free parking lot, it doesn’t hurt to pull in no matter what time you start your day, just to see if there’s an open space.

You could always stand off to the side and take your own selfie without choosing to wait in line to get up close for a photo.

2. The Boulder City-Hoover Dam Museum

boulder city museum sign

Approximate time: 45 minutes

The Boulder City/Hoover Dam Museum is free and open to the public seven days a week from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m., 365 days a year.

This is a very special little museum, in the heart of where the construction workers who built Hoover Dam lived.

This museum tells the true story of those who braved the desolate Mojave Desert to create a settlement for their families during the years that they were building the dam since they surely couldn’t ‘commute’ every day from far away places.

This incredible museum is three-dimensional, with interactive displays and exhibits.

There are amazing photos, artifacts, and even sound effects!

It is such a worthwhile stop on the way to Hoover Dam that it gives you the option of skipping the exhibits that you’d have to pay for at the crowded dam site itself.

They’re both good exhibits, but it’s good to know that the free exhibit covers everything. It’s located inside the Boulder Dam Hotel.

There is free parking in the plaza next to this pretty little hotel, then just walk inside and past the lobby, straight back to the museum!

3. Hemenway Park

overview of lake with goast resting in the mountains

Approximate time: 15 minutes

This park is something you’d picture in a watercolor painting.

When you pull up and get out of your car, step foot in the lush, green grass, and look out in the distance.

You'll get the most glorious first view of the Black Mountains and Lake Mead in the background.

And if you’re lucky, you’ll get to see Bighorn Sheep grazing and hummingbirds buzzing by.

It’s so beautiful that it’s worth a stop on the way to the dam.

(Some say the bighorn sheep are most likely to be there in the late afternoon/early evening, but ya never know!)

4. Hoover Dam Lookout

lookout for hoover dam

Driving across Hoover Dam to the Arizona side, this is a worthwhile first look at the entirety of the dam before parking your car.

Since there isn’t a view of the entire dam site from the Nevada side, it takes only a couple of minutes longer to drive across the dam to this overlook for the view and some fabulous photos.

It shows you where you can park for free and helps you see how far you'd need to walk if you choose a free parking lot instead of a paid one near the dam.

5. Hoover Dam

Approximate time: 2 hours

It is difficult to estimate how much time you will spend here since there are so many variables.

It is a very personalized experience and without knowing what you wish to do on this visit, I can’t predict how much time you’ll be here.

You could spend many hours, or you could see the whole thing in under an hour.

If you want to experience the rest of the Shaka Guide tour stops in one day, then you might just choose to park and walk around Hoover Dam without spending extra time and money on the exhibits and the guided tours.

It gets very crowded here, and the cafe/grill at the dam could really sap precious time from your day.

6. The Mike O’Callaghan-Pat Tillman Memorial Bridge

overview of bridge from hoover dam

This is an amazing experience! It's exciting and maybe a bit scary to be so high up, but it's safe.

The parking lot to walk to the bridge is almost as high as the bridge, so you don't have to climb up really high to reach it.

Through a series of switchback walking ramps, with photo displays of the bridge being built, you get to the top in very little time.

Then, when you walk out onto the pedestrian walkway of the bridge, you’ll be rewarded with the most jaw-dropping, literal birds-eye view of Hoover Dam.

The question is, are you brave enough to whip out your phone for a photo, or are you hanging onto the railing for dear life?

You’re almost 900 feet above the Colorado River, with 18-wheelers flying by and usually a gusty breeze, so I wouldn’t necessarily call it ‘peaceful’ up there, but – that view!!!

This stop is totally free – no charge for parking or for walking across the bridge.

7. Lake Mead Lakeview Overlook

This is a quick stop. Look for the “Lakeview Overlook'' sign. It gives you yet another stellar view of Lake Mead – this time close up, and with the marina and boats.

If you look to your left from there, you’ll see the opening to the last of the historic railroad tunnels (we’ll be heading to that trail next.)

8. Lake Mead Visitor Center and Park Store

Approximate time: 20 minutes

This is a really pretty place and a nice stop. First of all, there are restrooms, which is always a plus.

Inside, there is:

  • a great exhibit about Lake Mead
  • a wonderful gift shop with native-made crafts for purchase
  • a staff of volunteers and park rangers who will deputize your kids as Junior Rangers
  • hand you maps
  • recommend trails based on your levels and the weather
  • answer any other questions you may have

Be sure to ask for maps, directions, and advice for the Owl Canyon and the Northshore Summit hikes if you’re considering taking these trails.

Better to have them in your car in case you need them, than try to find the trailheads on your own later.

Most importantly, the volunteers can also point you in the direction of the trailhead for the Historic Railroad Trail, because that’s the trail most worth taking, and it’s an easy one.

9. Historic Railroad Trail

Approximate time: 1 ½ hours

This hike begins from the Lake Mead Visitor Center’s parking lot or the very next parking lot past the Visitor Center.

If the weather is good, and you can hike a flat surface, I highly recommend at least going as far as the first couple of tunnels.

Walking through these tunnels is an unusual experience, and the scenery along the way is drop-dead gorgeous, with a view of Lake Mead.

You’re not at ground level, though, so make sure you remain on the path! And bring water and sunscreen.

There is no shade unless you’re inside the tunnels, where it’s markedly cooler.

10. Boulder Beach

beach with wildflower

After all of those views from afar of Lake Mead, it’s about time we get to see the lake up close!

It’s a rocky shoreline and beach, though, so watch your step. Maybe you’ll want to collect a few pretty little shells as souvenirs.

Considering that the life of Lake Mead is a big question mark due to so many years of drought conditions, you may one day be telling others that you got to dip your toes in it…while it still existed.

Let’s hope it doesn’t come to that, but still, it’s worth a stop.

11. Sunset View Scenic Overlook

As we meander Lakeshore Road and take in the beauty of Lake Mead National Recreation Area, head up to Sunset Overlook and just take it all in – the view of the lake and mountains that surround you is astounding.

12. 33-Hole Overlook and Owl Canyon

Approximate time: 15 minutes (the optional Owl Canyon hike would take longer)

Even if you don't like hiking and climbing rocks to see owls, you can enjoy the view from the Owl Canyon viewpoint.

The road also goes to the 33-Hole viewpoint, where you can see the mountains and the lake.

Plus, there are picnic tables here if you bring food and want to eat with amazing views surrounding you.

13. Northshore Road

Approximate time: (optional and variable)

You are only on this road for a couple of minutes and then you’ll be making a left onto Rt. 147/East Lake Mead Blvd. for a beautiful scenic drive back to Las Vegas.

That said, Northshore Road is arguably one of the prettiest scenic drives in all of America.

You can see mountains with lava on top, colorful red rocks, and a long hiking trail called Northshore Summit Trail, which is 16 miles away.

If you keep going, you'll reach St. Thomas Ghost Town on the right or Valley of Fire State Park on the left.

These places are about an hour past our turn to go to Las Vegas at East Lake Mead Blvd.

As nice as it would be to drive up the scenic Northshore Road if you don’t have enough gas in your tank or food and snacks with you, you better not chance it.

There is no place to get food, and only one place to get gas – Echo Bay – about 28 miles from here.

Plus, once you got up there, you’d probably want a few more hours to explore.

So it’s best left for another day so that you can start the day prepared with a full tank of gas and a supply of food and snacks.

That said, there’s no harm in driving a few miles up the road and back if you want a glimpse of it.

Choosing Your Route Back to Vegas

If you want to stay on the Shaka Guide tour, turn left on East Lake Mead Blvd.

It's a cool way to go back to Vegas, much better than the highways you used before.

If you choose to drive on Northshore Road, make sure to return to the turnoff for Rt. 147/East Lake Mead Blvd.

Then, head west to hear more stories and do more things on the Shaka Guide tour once we get to Vegas!

14. A Little White Wedding Chapel

white chapel for wedding

This is just a fun, kitschy thing to do, “when in Vegas.” It’s something that will have you chuckling and is sure to put a smile on your face.

This is an iconic Las Vegas wedding chapel, after all, featured in so many movies and TV shows, and so many celebrities (ahem, Jlo and Ben Affleck - not to name drop) have gotten hitched here.

From the adorable chapel inside to the drive-in wedding tunnel, you may wonder why the heck you’re stopping here, but then you’ll be thanking me later that you did – just because of the sheer fun of it!

Go ahead, try the front doors. If they’re open, you can walk right in for a glimpse!

15. The Strat Observation Tower

Approximate time: 45 minutes (or as long here as you like since it’s our last tour stop.)

First of all, there’s free parking, a rarity in Las Vegas. The Strat Observation Tower has been voted "Best Place to View the City" year after year.

At the tippy-top, The Strat (aka Stratosphere) is 1,149 feet tall with expansive, 360-degree views of the Las Vegas Strip and valley from both indoor and outdoor observation decks.

  • Level 112 is a 'selfie spot' – the highest spot in Vegas for viewing the city (at 909 feet).
  • Level 109 is the outdoor observation deck (at 866 feet).
  • Level 108 is the indoor observation deck (at 855 feet).

Tickets for the SkyPod Observation Deck Experience –  just for the observation decks (without any of the rides) – are $20 per person  and include both the indoor and outdoor observation decks.

And there are viewfinders on the outdoor deck to zoom in on the city.

You can get your tickets in advance online. Hours of operation are 10 a.m. - 1 a.m. daily.

The Strat has a free parking garage where you can park your car.

But if you want a closer and more convenient spot, like on Level 3 with a walkway to the casino, you can pay for it.

From Las Vegas Boulevard, turn onto W. Bob Stupak Ave. for the Self-Park Parking Garage.

In addition to the observation decks, there are thrill rides, shopping, and dining options up there. (And, of course, gaming and alcoholic beverages for those 21+)

Prices are subject to change.

Final Thoughts

And, hey… that’s all folks ! But Vegas is open most of the night, so be sure and check out our Highlights for lots of other things you can do if you’re still pumped for Vegas activities!

If you happen to have allotted two days to explore this area, I will offer you my personal opinion, as your tour researcher and writer, for the best way to spread this tour out over two days.

Float Tours

Some Hoover Dam boat tours also have a rafting tour or float tour on a pontoon boat in the Colorado River below the dam.

The road to the boat tour below the dam also allows you to see the old de-silting tank, gauging station, and dynamite storage bunkers that were used in the construction of the dam in the 1930s.

Being below the dam affords majestic views looking up the 725-foot tall dam from down in the Black Canyon of the Colorado River.

The float tours also allow great views of the power plants, diversion tunnels, and sheer cliffs above the river.

And they also travel below the Hoover Dam Bypass Bridge , a nearly half-mile-long suspension bridge spanning over 900 feet above the river.

As you’ll travel in the mighty Colorado River below the dam, float tours are not suitable for pregnant women.

14 Best Things To Do in Boulder City

B oulder City, Nevada is special. It’s got plenty of small town charm and oodles of history because after all, Boulder City is known for being the city that built the dam. Yes, that dam – the Hoover Dam.

If you are a lover of southern Nevada like I am, visiting Boulder City not only is fun but it gives you the chance to learn more about the construction of the dam and how that event shaped the future of this desert area. A must for anyone visiting Las Vegas, here’s just a few of the many things to do in Boulder City.

This article contains affiliate links. That means I may earn a commission, at no cost to you, if you book or buy something from a link share. This keeps Southerner Says online and on the road .  Thank you for your support .

Things to do in Boulder City

Today’s Boulder City is the area where the government housed workers during the dam construction. The project began in 1931 and at the height of the construction, approximately 7000 people lived there. Nowadays it’s about double that but Boulder City is still a small town with a close-knit community vibe.

Many people in Boulder City can trace their families to those that participated in the project. To say they’re proud of this accomplishment is an understatement. From public art to original buildings that were built and used during the dam construction, reminders of that historic legacy are found all over town.

Just 25 miles from Las Vegas, Boulder City is easy to get to and once there, it’s very walkable. You’ll find plenty of street parking to park the car and explore on foot. The historic downtown welcomes visitors and you’ll find friendly people no matter where you go in town.

1. Visit the Boulder Dam Hotel & Museum

To learn about the history of Boulder City and the Hoover Dam construction, start your visit at the Boulder Dam Hotel and Museum. The hotel itself is a beautiful historic site but it’s the museum inside the hotel that gives us a glimpse at what life was like in the desert during the dam construction.

The goal of the museum is to tell the story not so much of the actual building of the dam but the stories of individuals that participated in the project. With mostly men involved in building the dam, it’s easy to forget about the women and children who played a supporting role. What they lived through and put up with in this harsh environment is an accomplishment in itself.

Through photographs, artifacts and oral history, the museum will take you on an eye opening journey through the project and you’ll leave wondering how in the world this group of people accomplished what they did. The sheer will and determination is inspirational.

In addition to the museum, the hotel has a restaurant and a bar onsite and is a great place to stay if you plan on overnighting in town. The museum is open to the public every day, 7am to 7pm, 7 days week, 365 days of the year.

2. Tour Hoover Dam

After you’ve learned a bit about the individuals who participated in the dam construction, the next thing to do in Boulder City is visit the dam itself. Completed in 1935, to this day, the Hoover Dam is still one of the most impressive engineering feats of our time.

Built to harness the waters of the Colorado River and stop dangerous flooding down river, the dam took five years to complete and was actually finished ahead of schedule.

Named for Herbert Hoover, the 31st president of the United States, who “ as President, took an active part in settling the engineering problems and location of the dam in Black Canyon “, the dam is unbelievably impressive in person.

There are a couple of ways to see the Hoover Dam. The fast and free option is by parking in one of the public lots in Arizona and walking the short distance to Nevada and the dam. Along the way are places to snap photos, see the intake towers and the spillways that were last used in 1983.

To get full front view of the dam – like in the photo above – visitors can visit amd walk the pedestrian walkway alongside the Mike O’Callaghan-Pat Tillman Memorial Bridge that crosses Black Canyon.

For a more in-depth tour of the generator room and other inner workings of the dam, the Bureau of Reclamation – the government agency that manages the dam – offers tours daily. There are three different options you can choose from. I highly recommend taking a tour with a guide for additional information you can’t get on your own.

The Bureau of Reclamation’s website (below) has all the up to date tour info and you can also book a tour in person at the dam.

3. See the Trains at the Southern Nevada Railway Museum

Since there were no major roads or interstates at the time, railroads played a huge part in the Hoover Dam construction. Trains were used to bring in supplies and construction materials via the Nevada Southern Railroad built in 1931.

Once the dam was completed and the lake filled up, the need for the railroad line diminished. Parts of it actually disappeared underwater. Seeing a piece of history slipping away, a effort was made by volunteers and the state of Nevada to save what was left of the old line.

In time, portions of the tracks were restored and a railroad museum was founded. Later on, a collection of vintage train cars were added.

Visiting the Southern Nevada Railway Museum gives you the chance to tour some of those historic locomotives, cabooses and my favorite – a railway postal car. The museum even offers train rides on the very same tracks that were installed in 1931.

Visit the museum 7 days a week (closed on Nevada holidays) from 9:00am to 3:30pm. Check their website below for an event schedule including Christmas and holiday happenings.

4. Gamble at Railroad Pass Casino

The Railroad Pass Casino has been hosting visitors since 1931 and was the third licensed casino in Nevada – meaning it’s one of the oldest in the state. And it’s the longest running casino in the United States. A favorite for dam workers, a hotel was added to the casino in the 1980’s to attract even more visitors.

Surprising fact – gambling is prohibited inside the city limits of Boulder City. But since the Railroad Pass is actually just outside the city limits – with a Henderson address – you can eat, drink, gamble and sleep your way through this historic stop on this things to do in Boulder City list.

5. Find Your Park at Lake Mead National Recreation Area

Once the Hoover Dam was complete and the reservoir began to fill up, a recreation area was created to include the new lake. Lake Mead National Recreation Area – formally known as Boulder Dam Recreation Area – was created in 1947 and is the United State’s first national recreation area.

The park encompasses 1.5 million acres of protected land and is one of the most diverse parks in the park system. You can hike it, fish it, boat it, paddle it or just drive through it to enjoy, in my opinion, one of the most underrated parks in the national park system.

The easiest ways to see a piece of the park from Boulder City is by visiting the Alan Bible Visitor Center and taking a walk on the Historic Railroad Trail that follows the same railroad bed and passes through some of the very tunnels made to carry supplies through the canyon to the dam.

Southerner Says: Lake Mead National Recreation Area is a fee based park but the Historic Railroad Trail is outside the entrance station. To access other areas of the park, the fee is $25 per vehicle per day or free with an America the Beautiful Pass .

6. Search for Wildlife at Hemenway Park

The Mojave Desert is full of wildlife. Even in Boulder City it’s easy to spot some. Hemenway Park, near downtown is a favorite hangout for bighorn sheep in the summer and fall.

Not only do you get some of the best views of the lake driving to the park but it’s an ideal spot for taking a break from the desert heat. There’s nothing more fun than watching the sheep hanging out and just living life.

7. Go Mountain Biking

Mountain biking is a big deal in Boulder City. And why not with epic views of the lake from the 34 mile River Mountain Loop Trail? This non-motorized trail circles the River Mountains and connects Boulder City, Lake Mead National Recreation Area, Henderson and other areas.

It’s the first endeavor of it’s kind in southern Nevada and offers visitors a chance to take advantage of the gorgeous desert scenery, hopefully see some wildlife and get some exercise all at the same time.

Bring your own bike or rent bikes at an outfitter in Boulder City. All Mountain Cyclery has every kind of bike you could need and the Mountain Rivers Trail can be accessed from right near their store.

You could also drive into Lake Mead National Recreation to access the trail there. Visit the official website for more info and a map of the entire trail.

8. Get Out on the Water

Boulder City’s proximity to Lake Mead and the Colorado River means plenty of opportunity to get out on the water – which I highly recommend if you have the time. It’s the best way to appreciate the lake and see everything from a different perspective.

Boats and a non-motorized boats – are available to rent at Lake Mead Marina on the Nevada side of Lake Mead and kayaks and boats can be rented at Willow Beach, on the Arizona side for paddling on the Colorado River.

Organized Colorado River and Black Canyon tours are available with outfitters throughout the area and a pickup at your hotel in Las Vegas can even be arranged. I’ve linked to some of those high-rated trips below.

Both of these sections of the park are beautiful and have camping, restaurants and other amenities available for a fun day trip or a longer weekend getaway. Remember to follow all the safety guidelines. Wind and other potentially treacherous conditions can arise quickly on the lake. Stay informed, put safety first and wear a personal floatation device.

Willow Beach Marina

9. Buy a Space Pen

Besides the dam, perhaps one of the most unique things in Boulder City is Fisher Space Pen. Twenty years ago, Paul C. Fisher, changed the pen industry when he invented a sealed and pressurized ink cartridge refill. Because it was so revolutionary, the pen was used in space in 1967 and has been on every NASA manned space flight since 1968.

In fact, the Fisher Space Pen even has its own permanent exhibit inside the Apollo Saturn V Center at Kennedy Space Center.

Fisher Pen Company moved its manufacturing facility from California to Boulder City in 1976 and you can visit the factory store and buy a space pen right in Boulder City, Monday through Friday, 7am-4pm Pacific Time.

10. Meet a Monster at Tom Devlin’s Monster Museum

I’ll admit, I had never heard of a monster museum before but Boulder City has one. Tom Devlin’s Monster Museum is a museum with everything from scary art and creature suits to vintage cars and custom pieces featuring monsters and props from horror movie history.

The museum is a must stop for anyone who enjoys a a bit of a fright. It’s open 7 days a week from 10am-6pm and if you happen to visit in October, check out their special Halloween events.

11. Sip Craft Beer

Located on historic Main Street in downtown, Boulder Dam Brewing Co. is a great choice for relaxing after all your Boulder City sightseeing. The brewery has both indoor and patio seating and serves a variety of beers ranging from stouts and pale ales to my favorite, a refreshing German hefeweizen served with its own juicy orange.

Stop in for a delicious meal or sipping the afternoon heat away. If you are in town on the weekend, the brewery usually has live music on the patio.

A German Hefeweizen

12. Go Antiquing

As you stroll though downtown Boulder City you might notice all the antique stores and vintage shops around town. Here’s your chance to take home a piece of dam history or a special item.

Goatfeathers Emporium, with their huge selection of vintage items, memorabilia and gifts is a good place to start your quest.

The  Boulder City Co Store is another terrific stop to browse for clothes, trinkets and dam souvenirs. Housed in a historic refurbished building downtown, you can shop and enjoy an expresso while you’re at it.

13. Search for Public Art

Boulder City celebrates the dam and its past with an abundance of public art. You’ll find murals and sculptures dedicated to that history strategically placed all around the downtown area. There’s nothing more fun than just happening up on a surprise mural painted on the side of a building or a sculpture tucked away somewhere unexpected.

For sure, don’t miss the official “Greetings from Boulder City” mural (pictured in the cover photo) and the colorful dam and Lake Mead mural on the Sands Motel building. For even more public art, there’s a Boulder City’s Public Artscape walking trail that features more thirty sculptures located throughout town.

14. Eat a Delicious Meal at Coffee Cup Cafe

One of the things I love about a small, community focused town is that there’s always plenty of local restaurants. You’ll see a few well known fast food chains around town but the majority of Boulder City restaurants are locally owned. And there’s so many to choose from.

Take your pick from dozens of outstanding eateries like The Dillinger, Southwest Diner, Milo’s and my favorite – Coffee Cup Cafe. Serving all day breakfast and lunch, Coffee Cup Cafe is the perfect early or mid-morning stop before shopping or a visit to the dam.

Their omelets and breakfast tacos are out of this world. The menu also includes milkshakes and adult beverages. You can’t go wrong with anything you order.

Things To Do in Boulder City Round-Up

So, there you have it – my list of the best things to do in Boulder City. This doesn’t mean that there are only 14 things to do in this fun little town. Check out Visit Boulder City’s website for more info about events and seasonal celebrations happening all the time.

A Google Map of these the things to in Boulder City can be found here. Add it to your own Google account by clicking the star at the end of the title. The includes layers with driving directions as well as the restaurants mentioned here and a few others I really like.

Thanks to Las Vegas Convention and Visitors Authority for hosting me on some of these activities. As always, even though I was hosted, the experiences and opinions are entirely my own.

In full disclosure, my daughter lives in Boulder City, so I know it pretty well. It’s one of my favorite places to spend time and I think you’ll enjoy it too.

See you on the road!
