Welcome to Transpennine Real Ale Trail
As featured on the BBC's Oz and James Drink to Britain , The Transpennine Real Ale Trail is a unique voyage to a selection of Yorkshire and Lancashires best real ale pubs - on a train!
All the pubs are within a stones throw of their respective Railway Stations, so finding your way there (and back) couldn't be easier.
We have tried to provide as much information as possible about each pub on the trail, as well as the information needed to get to each station. Whilst you're on the train before starting your trail, we also love to share our knowledge about trading, which we recommend you do safely and soberly, using the regulated brokers that appear in best uk trading platforms lists to avoid scam traders and other undesirable risk factors. You can create your own Real Ale Trail and view the information about the services between your selected stations. Unfortunately we can not supply the exact timetable within our website - but we have given you links to the relevant websites so you can easily plan your journey.

Chug through lush valleys and pretty villages, take in the stunning scenery and sample some delicious local ales when you join us on our famous Rail Ale Trail.
Climb aboard one of our steam or diesel trains on the ELR as we guide you through the history and heritage of the local area – with a particular focus on the region’s long brewing traditions and the people who have shaped the towns and villages over the centuries.
We’ll hop on and hop off all along the East Lancashire Railway line, stopping at some of the oldest and most popular pubs in the Irwell Valley to sample a pint or two of locally brewed ale.
Alongside some thirst-quenching beer, you’ll enjoy a delicious, hearty lunch in a traditional pub and amazing views across the stunning Lancashire countryside.
Every tour is different (though they all begin at Bury Bolton Street Station), so be sure to check how much walking we’ll be doing before you book.
Ales on the Rails
An Ales on the Rails trip includes:
- A trip on the train accompanied by your expert tour guide. You will board and alight at various stops where your guide will point out landmarks and share stories about each location.
- A stop for a pub lunch with half a pint of beer. Lunch is a set meal so please advise if you have dietary needs.
- A bottle of local beer on the train (all other drinks must be purchased yourself).
- A twenty minute walk. Please wear suitable footwear and clothing.
Hike for your Hops
A Hike for your Hops trip includes:
- A mid-morning coffee stop or a bottle of beer on board the train (varies per tour, all other drinks aside from half with lunch must be purchased yourself).
- An extended walk along pavements, rough terrain, in woodland and up and down hills. Please wear suitable footwear and clothing.
Please note: Rail Ale Trails dates are subject to a minimum number of tour participants
Ales on the Rails: 18 May, 21 September
Hike for your Hops: 22 June, 17, 23 August
The Rail Ale Trails are guided tours focusing on the region’s history with stories and anecdotes that bring added colour and insights into the destinations and hospitality venues located along the 12-mile route of the East Lancashire Railway. Every tour includes a steam train ride and an expert led Blue/Green Badge guided tour visiting a handful of pubs along the way.
Each tour includes a full line return ticket, pub lunch and one complimentary bottle of ale unless otherwise stated.
Tours include a bottle of ale which is issued at the start of the journey unless otherwise stated, and one half pint at one of the pubs along the route.
Any additional alcohol must be purchased by the tour-goer themselves.
The tours start at Bury Bolton Street Station, from there you will take a steam train along the route of the East Lancashire Railway. This route may vary dependant on the timetable or if stated any differently in the tour description. On the train ride you will hear stories about the local area told in a fun and enlightening way by the professional tour guide.
When alighting along the route, you will have chance to visit a number of recommended pubs or bars. The tour guide will continue to talk you through the history of the area and its brewing industry along the way.
After the tour you will return to Bury via one of the ELR heritage trains.
Unless otherwise stated the tours start promptly at 10:30am outside The Trackside pub, Platform 2, Bury Bolton Street Station. We ask that guests arrive ideally 10-15 minutes before the start time. Each tour lasts approximately 6.5 hours and finishes back at The Trackside (alighting on the last train of the day at 17.01 unless otherwise stated).
This depends on the railway timetable and nature of the tour advertised, generally the tour guide will allow enough time for everyone to comfortably enjoy half a pint in each venue.
Individuals, couples and small groups all frequent our Rail Ale Tours. The tours are intended to provide a quirky and informative mix of local history and storytelling, with opportunities to also enjoy a beer or two along the way.
Under 18s are not permitted on the Rail Ale Trails. Dogs are not allowed on the guided tours.
Our guided tours are structured day trips and feature scheduled stops with commentary along the way. The guided tour includes a full line return ticket. While guests are advised to stick with the guide and their group for the day – and will need to do so if they want to enjoy the lunch included – you are free to deviate from the chosen route if you prefer to do so (however you will need to keep hold of proof of purchase so that you are not charged any separate train fares on the day).
Each tour includes a food stop in the ticket price – this will either be a pub lunch or a combination of pizza and pie served for guests at a couple of stops along the route. You ‘re also welcome to purchase additional snacks yourself if you wish.
Unless otherwise stated each tour costs £59.50 per person.
Yes, pre-booking is essential.
You are welcome to increase the size of your booking provided there is availability.
All tours require some walking, which is fairly easy-going but bear in mind that Ramsbottom in particular has one or two steep hills. Usually there is no more than 10-minutes’ walk between the station and each pub stop. The tour guides will be happy to make arrangements if you feel like you may struggle, as long as they know in advance.
We welcome all group bookings and can offer private tours for corporate and private groups, please contact us at [email protected] or by calling 0333 320 2830. There is no group discount available for Rail Ale Tour bookings.
The maximum number of attendees on a Rail Ale Trail is 25. This is to ensure that the tour guide can give everyone a complete experience (and that everyone can fit in the pub).
Stag and Hen parties are not permitted on the Rail Ale Trail.
The East Lancashire Railway is a 12-mile route in total. From Bury Bolton Street Station by train, Heywood is 15 minutes, Rawtenstall is 30 minutes, Ramsbottom is 15 minutes, and Summerseat is approximately 8 minutes.
The tours have been planned so that at least part of the journey on any tour will be made by steam train – subject to availability.

The Transpennine Real Ale Trail and its '10 commandments' in all you need to know about legendary Yorkshire pub crawl

It’s a real ale right of passage — eight train stops, eight pubs, eight chances to sample a nice beer.
The Transpennine Real Ale Trail is a pub crawl with a difference, transporting you to eight real ale havens along a single train line.
It’s thought the trail was first described in an article in the Independent in 1998 by Stephen O’Loughlin, before featuring on the small screen in the BBC series Oz and James Drink to Britain.

Whether you’re a ale trail veteran or fancy riding the rails to ale for the first time, we’ve got all the details you need — and of course, you must follow the Real Ale Trail 10 Commandments.
What is it?
The Real Ale Trail is the chance to sample quality real ales in selected pubs along a section of the Transpennine railway line. Eight stops, eight pubs (and the return journey if you’re brave).
All the pubs are mere yards from their respective railway stations (so you can’t get lost), so all you need to do is keep an eye on the time and make sure you don’t miss your connections!
Where does it run?
From Batley to Stalybridge — some argue it’s Stalybridge to Batley.
Which end of the trail you start from is up to you of course — if you live in Huddersfield, in the middle, it’s even more complicated. Do you work your way up one side then double back?
Travel to Batley and begin officially there? Half the fun is arguimg about which pub to start in — and where you’ll end up.
The pubs of the Real Ale Trail
Starting from Batley, here are the eight pubs of the Real Ale Trail:
- Batley — Cellar Bar: Real ales from across Yorkshire and beyong, with two permanent real ale pumps and three guest beers. It also has a pool table and dartboard.
- Dewsbury — West Riding: The old rail station waiting rooms are home to the West Riding pub, offering a cosy atmosphere and impressive range of ales. It also serves food, and based in the station itself, you’re mere paces from the train to the next stop.
- Mirfield — Navigation Tavern: An ambassador for Theakston beers, the Navigation is by the canal and also hosts its ownbeer festivals.
- Huddersfield — King’s Head: The King’s Head always offers a few local brews, with Golcar Brewery, Magic Rock and Elland Brewery regularly on the pumps. You might catch some live music too.
- Slaithwaite — The Commercial: Based in the centre of the village, the Commercial boasts eight hand pulled ales, some from Empire Brewery, located just down the road.
- Marsden — The Riverhead Brewery Tap: The Riverhead has 10 real ale hand pumps — some of which serve the pub’s own ales, made in the microbrewery in the cellar. Food is served in the upstairs dining room.
- Greenfield — The Railway Inn: The first stop outside of Yorkshire, the Railway Inn offers real ales, live music and a games room — and it’s directly opposite the train station.
- Stalybridge — Station Buffet Bar: One of the few remaining Victorian station buffet bars, Station Buffet Bar is the end of the trail (or the start, for some!), with a rotating beer menu of eight real ales and foreign bottled beers.

Always drink responsibly
While you’ll be spoiled for choice along the trail, please drink responsibly — while there are eight pubs, you don’t have to have a pint in each one.
Make sure you drink water in between alcoholic drinks and spread them out along the trail — remember, you still need to make it home from the other end of the trail!

Take a Wine & Beer-Fueled Train Ride Through New York’s Adirondacks
words: Andrew Thomas
photo: Adirondacks Scenic Railroad / Facebook
updated: April 2, 2024
Update: The train is back running with dates in spring and summer 2024. Cheers!
The Adirondack Mountains offer breath-taking views of upstate New York, which can be a welcome escape for urbanites looking for a break. But wouldn’t those breath-taking views be even better with some breath-taking wine and beer? Yes. The answer is yes. The Adirondack Scenic Railroad is offering a beer and wine train for people who want to sip on a drink while gazing at the lush scenery.
The train departs from Utica’s Union Station and travels north through the Adirondack Mountains to Remsen Station. Live music and cheeses by Cabot Cheese will be provided, while beer, wine, and non-alcoholic beverages will be available for purchase. Coach seat tickets sell for $25, and first class tickets go for $45. The first class car will feature table seating and hors d’oeuvres. If you’re looking for a little more sustenance, passengers are encouraged to visit the café car for light and heavy dining options.
There seems to be something inherently appealing and human about drinking on trains. Whether it’s the Napa Valley wine train or the Uncorked Line on the Smoky Mountain railroad , people from coast to coast just can’t get enough of train booze cruises.
If you’re heading to Utica’s train ride and someone in your group is planning on driving, a $10 discount is offered for designated drivers. Designated drivers will receive a wristband indicating they can’t be served alcohol, but will be offered complimentary non-alcoholic beverages and snacks. The train has regular departures in fall, spring, and summer, so book a ticket now!

Some things you should be aware of though, before you sign up: 🇦 Filling a carrier with 22000 t of wine and the **3784 t** of Tritium needed for the trip will cost in the region of **484 million** credits. Your total cost may differ depending on how much wine you load, which is usually dependent on any services you have installed if you fill your carrier full.
🇧 However, all of the credits you spend loading your carrier will be recouped when your carrier is unloaded meaning you don’t make any loss or profit overall for being a wine carrier. (For a carrier taking 3784 trit and 22k wine)

San Diego’s party boats offer nighttime cruises, too. The Rock the Yacht Booze Cruise on the City Cruises is a two-hour night cruise with a DJ, cocktails, and appetizers. Night cruises can be a great way to liven up a Friday or Saturday night or to celebrate a special occasion.
Enjoy San Diegan Craft Beer on a Cruise
San Diego is known by some as the “Craft Beer Capital of America” --- and for good reason. It’s home to a number of craft breweries. On a booze cruise, you can enjoy some of the city’s local craft beer.
Flagship Cruises & Events offers a cruise called Hops on the Harbor. This cruise on the San Diego Bay features craft beer from a different local brewery every month. What better way to enjoy a craft beer while taking in some of San Diego’s most breathtaking views?
Celebrate Events on a Party Boat
Are you looking for a memorable way to celebrate an event or special occasion? If so, you might consider planning a booze cruise. Party boats can be a great way to celebrate a bachelor or bachelorette party, anniversary party, work party or birthday party. This can be a fun way to celebrate with your friends and family and create lifelong memories!
Each party boat has a different number of people allowed for groups. Mai Tai Yacht Charter offers semi-private and private events, allowing anywhere from 6 to 130 people.
Booking a Party Boat or Booze Cruise
When you book a party boat or booze cruise, there are a few things to look for. Be sure to take a closer look at what’s included in the price. Is a meal included in the cost? How many guests can you bring? How long does the cruise last? What days of the week are the cruise offered? Be sure to do some comparison shopping to find the best fit.

Alaska Tour & Travel
Alaska Cruises and Trains
Alaska cruise and railroad tours.
The Alaska Railroad tracks run north from Seward, stretching 470 miles through Anchorage, Talkeetna, and Denali National Park to the town of Fairbanks. The two primary cruise ports in the region are in Whittier and Seward. You can easily take the train to or from your cruise ship in both communities.
If you are travelling on a northbound cruise, you can catch the train to Anchorage in the evening from either Seward or Whittier. Both train departures are great for those wanting to catch a day cruise to see the glaciers and wildlife out of either port after disembarking their cruise ship. To continue north from Anchorage by rail you will need to overnight and catch another train the following morning. The northbound Denali Star train leaves Anchorage at 8:20am heading north to Talkeetna and Denali National Park. The train arrives into Talkeetna at 11:05am, and Denali National Park at 3:40pm. The same train continues on to Fairbanks departing Denali National Park at 4:00pm, and arriving into Fairbanks at 8:00pm.
If you prefer to disembark the cruise ship and go directly north to either Talkeetna or Denali National Park, you can book a seat on the Park Connection Motor Coach . This is the only scheduled service available that will allow you to travel from the port to either of the above locations in one day.
If you are cruising southbound and want to tour by train before your Alaska cruise, you will want to fly into either Anchorage or Fairbanks. Anchorage has the largest airport in Alaska, and most travelers choose that option. From Anchorage you can take the train directly to your cruise ship port city, either Seward or Whittier. You can also do a short land tour north to Denali National Park and or Talkeetna. If you are short on time, consider returning to Whittier or Seward on the motorcoach . This is the only scheduled service that will allow you to travel to your cruise port from either Denali Park or Talkeetna in the same day.
Remember, we are happy to help with your trip, not only the train services and motorcoach transfers, but we can arrange complete pre and post cruise land packages as well.
