Journey Into Mystery

Journey Into Mystery went through a couple of different incarnations before the much fabled issue #83 - which brought the world the introduction of one of the most iconic of Marvel superheroes... The Mighty THOR !

Beginning in 1952 after Timely Comics had given up it's superhero titles which made them popular in 1940's, and had trasitioned to the mantle of Atlas Comics, JIM was initially a suspense/horror title.

Many creative holdovers from the Timely era contributed to the book (Carl Burgos, Bill Everett, Syd Shores), along with many future and established superstars (Russ Heath, Joe Maneely, Reed Crandall, Gray Morrow).

Later, around issue #50 or so, in the lead up to the revival of Marvel Comics, the book became a sci-fi/monster comic, and many members of the famous "bullpen," (Joe Sinnott, Jack Kirby, Steve Ditko, Dick Ayers, Don Heck - and of course Stan Lee) gradually started finding more and more work in JIM's pages.

Finally, after the success of the re-launch of the superhero genre with the Fantastic Four , Spider-Man , etc., THOR was debuted in August of 1962 and would be the main attraction for the duration of the book's life (issue #125, February 1966).

Thor would immediately go on to have his own long-running title, but it was in Journey into Mystery that he first came into prominence, with a whole universe being created around Thor, whose earthly guise was partially lame Dr. Donald Blake, and would be established as a "God on Earth" - a popular and recurring Marvel theme - with many elements from Norse mythology being prominent, and many supporting characters being drawn from that well.

It was Journey where we first saw his mythical homeland, Asgard, encountered Loki - Thor's brother and arch nemesis - and father Odin (among many others).

And of course it wouln't be Marvel if your main character was not subject to many personal conflicts, like Don Blake's ongoing tentative relationship with nurse Jane Foster. Additionally, Thor would encounter many Earth-bound baddies, such as Radioactive Man, Lava Man, Mister Hyde, The Cobra, Grey Gargoyle, Absorbing Man... and also epic encounters with Hulk and Hercules!

Thor in Journey Into Mystery set the pace for all future "God" books, and most of the issues are worth some money, depending on condition...see some going prices for your issues here, in Quality Comix's online price guide!

The top grade available for this issue is a VF+ 8.5 with no sales data on file. The single VF 8.0 below it set the top price of $5,201 in 2013. Other grades for this issue showed flat growth, though it's important to note it has a limited market with only 21 registered copies available.

FN 6.0 tripled in value from $100 in 2010 to today's $300, while VG/FN 5.0 provided a net of $100 from $120 in 2012 to today's $220.

There are sixteen registered copies of this book on file, and the only data available is for three sales! VG 4.0 set the top price of $300 in 2015. A year earlier in 2014, 5.5 FN- went for a lesser value of $290. In between, VG+ 4.5 sold for around $70. Given the value we've seen for other early issues in this series, it could be a great buy low opportunity in a blind market.

This could make you think the $2,100 sale was an outlier, but the market suggests otherwise. This sale rocketed past the 2007 price of $359 for the much higher graded FN/VF 7.0! At the lower VG 4.0 grade, a 2011 price of $60 moved to today's $500 for over 700% profit! Like other issues at this point in the series, the very top grades are much lower in price than higher quality grades thanks to the passing of time. The single VF+ 8.5 went for $560 in 2006, but that value was dwarfed by the top price of $1,494 for a VF- 7.5 in 2014! The very top single copy NM- 9.2 has no sales data available. Lower grades showed lots of fluctuation, stabilizing at overall flat growth in the current market.

The top grade of this issue is set by a single NM- 9.2 with no sales data available. There are three VF+ 8.5 below it, and one set the top price of $598 in 2016. The recent prices for lower grades suggest a promising future market at the top. Three years after that $598 sale in 2019, a FN- 5.5 went for $400.

This issue features art by Pete Tumlinson. He was best known for illustrating comics outside the superhero genre, especially horror and western.

What's Journey Into Mystery #20 worth in 2024?

Like other issues in this era of the series, the top end grade books haven't hit the market for many years. This paved the way for much higher sales at lower grades. The very top VF/NM 9.0 sold for $483 in 2004. In 2010, a VF+ 8.5 went for $538. And five years later in 2015, VF- 7.5 sold for the historical high of $1,058. Whoever is holding those top grades is sure to cash in big! GD/VG 3.0 had a small jump from $150 in 2015 to today's $200.

It's a pattern with this era of the series: the older sales of the top end led to higher prices over time at lower grades. The highest grade single NM- 9.2 went for $818 in 2005. Seven years later in 2012, a lower grade VF/NM 9.0 set the historical high of $1,286! Five years later in 2017, FN/VF 7.0 maintained the accelerated market for this issue with a sale of $956.

Five years later in 2019, the single VF/NM 9.0 at the very top sold for a much smaller $760. There are three registered copies between these two grades with no sales data available. Just like issue #24, this book has an outlier sale at a grade lower than the top. But it's even more extreme with this one: a FN- 5.5 set the top price of $2,150 in 2018! By contrast, the highest grade VF/NM 9.0 went for $557 in 2009. More recently, VF- 7.5 sold for $837 in 2017. This was a nice profit from its 2010 value around $300 in 2010.

Other issues from this era in the series showed a pattern of lower grades selling for a much higher value than top grades about ten years later. #26 bucks the trend, with the single top NM 9.4 going for the high price of $3,346 in 2012. In parallel, FN/VF 7.0 went for $1,016 in the same month and year. This was an amazing profit: just one year earlier in 2011, FN/VF 7.0 sold for $220. That's growth over 350%!

It's all about the very top grade for this issue. The single 9.4 sold for a high of $4,033 in 2012. It's a stark contrast from the $635 value of NM- 9.2 in 2010 (that was still an excellent jump from its lesser $280 price in 2009). VF 8.0 showed better growth over a longer period of time, moving from around $250 in 2006 today's $750. That's a net of $500!

Features art from Bob Brown, co-creator of Space Ranger. He'd take over art duties for Challengers of the Unknown from Jack Kirby, a role that lasted nearly ten years.

Thus far, issue #29 has a market less explosive than others in this era of the series. The top price was set at $530 by a VF- 7.5 in 2011. Two years later in 2013, a higher grade VF+ 8.5 went for a lower value of $200. A limited quantity of twelve registered copies makes the market hard to read. Given the excellent returns for other issues in this series in the same years, it could be an excellent buy low speculation investment.

Key Issue Comics: Journey into Mystery 83 Origin and First Appearance of Thor

Key Issue Comics: Journey into Mystery 83, Origin and First Appearance of Thor. Click to find one on Goldin!

Why Journey into Mystery 83 is a Key Issue Comic

Journey into Mystery #83 saw the origin and first Appearance of Thor!

WARNING: REPRINTS EXIST. See below for details and how to identify whether you have a reprint.

With the rise of the superheroes in the Silver Age, Stan Lee and Jack Kirby wanted to make someone even stronger than the Incredible Hulk , but they weren’t sure of the best way.

Taking inspiration from Norse mythology, Marvel decided that Thor, the Viking God, would their next big character.

Thor makes his first appearance in Journey into Mystery #83 (1962), along with his legendary hammer Mjolnir.

But before Thor was a god of legend, he was the normal Doctor Donald Blake. While on vacation in Norway, Blake sees an alien ship (Stone Men from Mars) landing near him.

Hiding in a cave, he finds a walking stick. When struck on a rock, the stick becomes Mjolnir and Blake is transformed into Thor!

While his origin is slightly changed later, it turns out that Blake had always been Thor, but his father, Odin, wanted Thor to experience life as human and wiped all memories of godhood from his mortal brain.

Beginning with Journey #83, the series was dedicated to the adventures of Thor.

By issue #126, it was renamed simply to The Mighty Thor .

Guide to Journey into Mystery 83 Comic Book Values

How to Identify a Golden Record Reprint

It can be easy to get excited when you see a Golden Record reprint of the mega Marvel keys from the early 1960s. Even I have been fooled a couple of times!

The main way to identify the GRRs:

  • They have NO PRICE on the front cover!
  • They are thinner, because they don't have ad pages inside
  • The back cover is different

The big giveaway is the lack of a price box. It's an easy one to overlook when you see a high-grade key issue and your pulse begins to race... See images below.

Front Covers of Golden Record Reprint Issues Have No Prices Printed on Them. Here is Journey #83

The four titles reprinted by GRR were FF #1 , Avengers #4 , Journey into Mystery #83, and Amazing Spider-Man #1 .

The reprinted comics had slightly different covers, along with an LP record of the story.

While the Golden Record reprints are worth a fraction of the originals, they are still collectible -- especially since for many collectors, the original issues are well beyond their budget.

Mint condition Golden Record comics are now highly sought-after. They are often found in great shape, because the record protected the comic book from damage over the years.

Slabbed sales data, covrprice’s take on comic values.

A comic is only worth what someone is willing to pay for it. With this in mind, CovrPrice only displays actual sales data (taken across multiple online marketplaces… not just eBay) to help you better determine the best value for your comics.

GRAPH - Total Graded Averages

Our goal for this graph is to show overall sales trends for officially graded comics. Here we take the average for each condition and display it as a data point. To see the most recent sales data for each condition be sure to look at the individual sales data listed in the tables below.

WHY ARE SOME SALES MISSING?

“I sold a comic last week, why isn’t it showing up on your site?”

At CovrPrice, we capture tens of thousands of sales DAILY. It’s simply impossible for a human to determine the authenticity of every sale coming our way. (Trust us, we’ve tried) To ensure the quality of our data we error on the side of caution, valuing accuracy over quantity. We only integrate sales for comics that our robots are confident are correct. While we don’t capture 100% of every sale in the market we’re getting closer and closer to that goal. If you think we missed a sale that you want to be entered into CovrPrice just contact us at [email protected] with information about the sale and our humans will investigate and add it for you.

HOW CAN I HELP COVRPICE CAPTURE MY SALES?

That’s easy, when listing your comics for sale on 3rd party marketplaces be sure you include the following: Comic Title, Issue #, Issue Year, Variant Info (usually the cover artists last name), and Grade info.

For example Captain Marvel #1 (2015) - Hughes Variant - CGC 9.8

This will help our robots better identify and sort your sales more accurately.

Raw Sales Data

Conditions info for raw comics.

We’re working hard to provide you with more information about the raw sales data we capture. When we’re able to determine the condition/grade of a raw comic, we’ll list that grade in blue next to the sale. Please Note: Since raw condition information comes from the seller’s listing itself, it should be viewed as subjective. However, if a seller states a comic is a 9.8 and a buyer buys it, one might infer that the buyer was in fact willing to pay that amount for that condition.

WHY DO YOU SHOW RAW VALUES?

Ummm… cause we’re awesome. Also, most comic collections are made up of non-graded comics. Don’t get us wrong, grading is a great way to preserve and authenticate the condition of your comic, but it’s also important to know what the other 95% of your raw collection is worth. That’s why we do all the leg work and show both graded and raw values.

If you think we missed a sale that you want entered into CovrPrice just contact us at [email protected] with information about the sale and our humans will investigate and add it for you.

How to Read the COVRPRICE Value Ribbon

Our goal is to provide our members with the closest FMV (fair market value) for all the comics in their COVR PRICE collection. Our approach is as follows:

1) If no condition info is entered for a comic, we will show you the FMV for the most common condition of that comic.

2) If you’ve entered condition info, we will show you the FMV for that specific condition, when it’s available.

3) If that specific condition has no sale values available, we will show you the FMV for the most common condition of that comic (either raw or slabbed)

This approach helps to ensure that most of your comics have a reasonable value estimate based only on real sales data (not speculation).

The items below show how value information is displayed for raw and slabbed comics on the COVR PRICE value ribbon.

AS WITH ALL COMICS/TITLES, VALUES SUGGESTED ARE FOR 'RAW' COPIES. THIRD-PARTY GRADED COPIES CAN FETCH SIGNIFICANTLY MORE ESPECIALLY IN HIGH GRADES.

(See Thor 1st Series) (See Journey into Mystery 2nd Series).

The series ran uninterrupted between #1 (1952) and #125 1966. After #125 the title continued as Thor #126 (see Thor 1st Series) up to Thor #502 . From Thor #502 the title reverted to Journey into Mystery #503 and ran for 19 issues until Journey into Mystery #521. The series and numbering now continues from Thor #621 (see Thor 1st Series). Journey into Mystery (2nd Series) does not contain Thor or any related Thor stories but rather it is a series that continued the long history of horror and mystery comics that was started in this original Journey into Mystery series before Thor became the central character. This long running title finally came to a close with the October 2013 issue #655.

UK Variants: Journey Into Mystery was first distributed in the UK from issue #58 dated May 1960. It is almost certain that this was the first of the Atlas titles to be officially distributed. While DC comics (more correctly at that time National Periodical Publications) such as Superman and Batman were officially distributed in the UK from cover date Nov 1959, Atlas comics (soon to become Marvel) were officially distributed six months later from May 1960. All issues prior to this ( #1 Jun 1952- #57 Apr 1958) are ND or Non Distributed in the UK and will always have the cover price in cents. UK variants: issues up to #110 have a printed 9d cover price in place of the American 10 or 12 cents. From #111 (Nov 1964) to #118 there is a larger style 10d ink stamp. From #119 it is a printed 10d cover price in place of the American 12 cents.
