The  Hoover Dam (originally known as the Boulder Dam), which holds back the mighty Colorado River forming Lake Mead , is located on the Arizona-Nevada border on Highway 93. It's 30 miles southeast of Las Vegas . 

It's a popular tourist destination whose Bureau of Reclamation tour alone draws nearly 1 million visitors every year. The bureau has been leading visitors through the dam and power plant since the '30s, and it is no less impressive today. If you're planning a trip to see the Hoover Dam in person, here's what to know.

The construction of the Hoover Dam originally named the Boulder Dam, backed up the Colorado River, resulting in the formation of Lake Mead. The dam was completed in five years. The contractors were allowed seven years from April 20, 1931, but concrete placement in the dam was completed May 29, 1935, and all features were completed by March 1, 1936.

Nearby Boulder City was built in 1931 to house the dam workers. It is the only city in Nevada where gambling is illegal. Visitors can enjoy antique shopping and restaurants.

If you want to visit the Hoover Dam, the first place to start is at the visitor center . Here, you can make your reservations, get the opening hours, learn about special events, and more.  Yes, you can enjoy the Dam for free. Park in one of the free parking areas and walk across the dam, where you will find plenty of great photo opportunities and interesting information posted along the way. Look up as you walk and see another marvel of engineering: the construction of an immense bridge across the river just downstream from Hoover Dam, on the Hoover Dam Bypass.

There are restrooms in the visitors center, parking garage, adjacent to the Old Exhibit Building and in the downstream face towers on top of the dam. Shopping for a souvenir? You'll find some interesting things at the gift shop on the lower floor of the parking garage. There is also a food concession at the dam.

Look for the warning signs before you cross the Hoover Dam. Not all types of vehicles are allowed to cross the dam. Even better, do a little research on the important  information  before you leave. You might be surprised to know that RVs and rental trucks can cross the dam (but they may be inspected). 

It's tempting to want to stop and take photos of the Hoover Dam or just pause and take it all in. Look for the many pullouts to safely do this. Don't stop on the street. 

The visitors center is on the Nevada side of the dam and it can be a bit more crowded but is another place to park. If you want covered parking or primo parking spots, be prepared to pay. Oversized vehicles, those with trailers and recreational vehicles can't park in the garage closest to the visitors center, though. They have to park in a lot on the Arizona side of the dam. If you're on a budget, you can find lots on the Arizona side a bit further up the canyon that offers free parking, if you don't mind the walk across. There is a closer lot on the Arizona side that costs a fee.

Tours of the Hoover Dam are available at the visitors center a first come, first served basis for those over 8 years of age. (Younger children cannot go on the tour.) For those wanting to see the Power Plant, too, you can reserve a ticket online or at the visitors center. All ages are allowed on the Power Plant tour. Neither tour is accessible for those in wheelchairs or with limited mobility.

The Hoover Dam is about a 45 minute drive from the Las Vegas Strip . Exact times may vary due to traffic. Rideshare services can cost around $60 one way depending on the time of day. If you are taking your own car, a parking garage can be found on the Nevada side of the dam. This garage costs $10 and only accepts cash.

There are no public transportation options that go directly to the dam. Take note that the Hoover Dam does not have an exact address, so make sure to set your GPS to the Hoover Dam Visitors Center.

The closest nearby cities to the Hoover Dam are Boulder City, Nevada, Henderson, Nevada, and Winchester, Nevada. A few affordable options are the Hoover Dam Lodge & Casino , the Boulder Dam Hotel , and the Best Western Hoover Dam .

• The Hoover Dam is a major attraction. It is worth visiting, but you may want to avoid the crowds. The slowest months for visitation are January and February. The least crowded time of day for tours is 9 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. and 3 p.m. to 4:45 p.m.
• Remember that you are in the desert. It can get hot at Hoover Dam (lots of concrete, remember?). Dress accordingly and bring water.
• When you are at the Hoover Dam, be sure and take the time to look at the Hoover Dam Bypass. The bridge over the Colorado River is viewable from the dam and as you drive across. The immense bridge is both amazing and scary. It is 900 feet above the river, making it the world's highest concrete arch bridge and the second-highest bridge in the United States, behind the Royal Gorge Bridge in Colorado.
• The main part of the bypass, which rerouted the highway to have fewer sharp turns, is named the Mike O'Callaghan–Pat Tillman Memorial Bridge. The bypass opened in 2010.

The Hoover Dam is one of the most famous attractions located just outside Las Vegas in Boulder City & roughly a 40-minute drive from the Strip.

Hoover Dam spans the Black Canyon along the majestic Colorado River right between Arizona and Nevada, with the latter explaining why the dam is a popular attraction for visitors to Las Vegas. Additionally, Lake Mead has a total capacity of 28,537,000 acre-ft (35.200 km3) (15,853,000 acre-ft (19.554 km3 is active, while 10,024,000 acre-ft (12.364 km3) is inactive), a catchment area of 167,800 sq. mi (435,000 km2), surface area of 247 sq. mi (640 km2), maximum length of 112 mi (180 km) and maximum water depth of 590 ft (180 m).

As for the powerplant, it has an annual power generation of 4.2 TWh (15 PJ), hydraulic head of 590 ft (180 m), turbines that consist of 13 x 130 MW, 2 x 127 MW, 1 x 68.5 MW, 1 x 61.5 MW Francis-type, 2 x 2.4 MW Pelton-type – all adding up to an installed capacity of 2,080 MW.

The dam tour costs $30 per person, after which, you can drive along the winding road and drive over the top of the dam. This scenic drive provides a wonderful experience – on one side lies the azure Lake Mead , and on the other side is a contrasting, but breathtakingly beautiful canyon.

Look out for The Colorado River Bridge (the Hoover Dam Bypass), officially referred to as the Mike O’Callaghan-Pat Tillman Memorial Bridge . This bridge is ideal for taking photos of the Hoover Dam as it is directly opposite the face of the dam and is the second-highest bridge in the United States and the world’s highest concrete arch bridge.

Don’t miss out on seeing the ‘Winged Figures of the Republic’ statues either. These unique sculptures celebrate the triumph of scientific advancement, coupled with the charm of intellectual resolution. Fun fact – more than four tons of bronze were used in the design.

The Hoover Dam is a world–famous concrete arch–gravity dam that is located 30 miles southeast of Las Vegas on the border between Nevada and Arizona. It impounds the mighty Colorado River in the Black Canyon .

The dam was designated a National Historic Landmark by congress in 1985. More than 8 million people a year visit the dam and many take Hoover Dam tours.

A Hoover Dam tour is a great way to take in this architectural and engineering marvel. The dam is 726 feet tall and nearly a 1/4–mile long. It is 660 feet wide at its base and has enough concrete to build thousands of miles of interstate.

Dam History

The dam was built in a five–year period between 1931 and 1936. Building the dam was perilous. Nearly one hundred workers perished in the construction of the dam.

The dam created beautiful Lake Mead , which is a massive reservoir north of dam. Lake Mead is very popular for water sports. The Bureau of Reclamation of the United States Department of the Interior operates the dam.

There is much more than just the dam to explore at the Hoover Dam. The dam has interesting architecture, memorials, sculptures, and historical features. On the Nevada side, there is also a massive power generation station.

Photo opportunities abound in every direction. To the north are the beautiful blue waters of Lake Mead. To the south, 726 feet below lies the scenic Black Canyon of the Colorado River , where rafting trips are offered.

To the south now also lies the Mike O'Callahan–Pat Tillman Memorial Bridge, also known as the Hoover Dam Bypass .

On the the east side of the Hoover Dam is the state of Arizona and to the west is state of Nevada. Desert mountains flank both sides of the Colorado River near the dam.

The state line is in the middle of the dam and there are intake towers on each side with clocks on them indicating "Nevada time" and "Arizona time" as the time zone changes on the state line.

How to spend a day at Hoover Dam, Lake Mead and Boulder City for FREE

5. Step back in time with a visit to the historic Boulder Dam Hotel in downtown Boulder City. Built in 1933, the hotel operates today with 21 guest rooms, a Hoover Dam museum, a popular restaurant and an art gallery.

6. Inside the Boulder Dam Hotel, you'll discover the Boulder City/Hoover Dam Museum. Their interactive exhibits tell the story of the Hoover Dam, as well as the men and women who built it and settled Boulder City.

7. WALK BC is a self-guided audio walking tour of Boulder City, the town formed to house the workers who built Hoover Dam. The tour takes you through the historic district, which is recognized on the National Register of Historic Places.

"What's in a name?" and other dam facts:

What's in a name, you ask?  Politics!  The dam was originally planned for Boulder Canyon and the early 1920's blueprints were labeled Boulder Dam. Although the site for the dam was moved to Black Canyon, the dam continued to be called Boulder Dam until 1931 when Secretary of the Interior, Ray Wilbur pronounced the dam would be called Hoover Dam.  In 1933, the new Secretary of the Interior under the Roosevelt administration, Harold L. Ickes, ordered the name "Boulder" be used as the official designation.  Finally, in 1947, under President Harry Truman, the dam was officially named "Hoover."

The Hoover Dam has appeared in dozens of movies, including The Silver Streak (1934), Heldorado (1946), The Amazing Colossal Man ( 1957), Ocean's Eleven (1960), Viva Las Vegas (1964), Diamonds Are Forever (1971), Superman (1978), Lost In America (1985), Universal Soldier (1992), Fools Rush In (1996), Vegas Vacation (1996), Head of State (2003), and Transformers (2007).

Hoover Dam is 724.6 feet high and weighs 6,600,000 tons.

The water pressure at the base of the dam is 45,000 pounds per square foot.

The sculptures at the dam were created by Oskar J. W. Hansen who saw his work as "a monument to collective genius asserting itself in community efforts around a common need or ideal."

There is enough concrete in Hoover Dam to build a two lane highway from Seattle, Washington to Miami, Florida or a four foot wide sidewalk around the Earth at the equator.

Because of the dam's remote location and difficult terrain, a town had to be built to house the construction companies and their workers. That town became Boulder City, NV and currently thrives as a safe, clean community of approx. 16,000 with beautiful parks, excellent restaurants and accommodations, educational museums and sites, and an array of outdoor adventure activities. One of the biggest dams in the United States is the Hoover Dam, and it sits right on the Colorado River between Nevada and Arizona. For those who don’t know, a man-made dam is a barrier that stops the flow of a body of water to create a reservoir of water and hydro-electric power. In 1931, the creation of the Hoover Dam across the Colorado River formed Lake Mead!

Seven Magic Mountains and Boulder City

There are several interesting stops between Las Vegas and the Hoover Dam. One of them is the Seven Magic Mountains, a desert art installation that’s a unique photo op! Another stop between Vegas and the Hoover Dam is Boulder City, a small town that was built specifically so that the construction workers building the dam would have somewhere to live during construction!

According to the tour guide, workers only made $1.83 a day building the dam! Today, Boulder City is home to 17,000 people, and is one of the very few cities in Nevada that doesn’t allow gambling.

The Desert Bighorn Sheep at Hemenway Park

Hemenway Park is a park in Boulder City where families used to camp out in the 1930s while waiting for members of their family to be admitted into the Hoover Dam project. They stayed here because if a family member received approval to work on the Hoover Dam, they would be given a place to live in Boulder City.

Today, Hemenway Park has a playground and is a fun place for kids to play. However, the best part of Hemenway Park is that it’s home to free-roaming bighorn sheep! The state animal of Nevada roam freely all over the park. They make for great photo subjects; however, be careful not to get too close, because they are wild animals!

Lake Mead Panoramic Lookout

Lake Mead is the largest reservoir in the United States. To get there, you’ll drive on the same road the original builders used to get to the Hoover Dam! The panoramic lookout over Lake Mead was originally built for people to stand and watch the lake fill up. Unfortunately, it’s kind of the opposite these days, as the water level is low due to frequent drought.

The Colorado River is 195 feet lower than usual, but despite this, the view is still lovely and good for photos. If you look closely, you may be able to see the many tiny antelope ground squirrels that call the area home. In fact, your tour guide might even give them some water so you can see them up close!

Cross the Hoover Dam

Since you’re in a small group with a climate-controlled van, you’ll be able to drive right up to the dam. Big tour busses are not allowed near the dam so this is a huge perk on our small group tour! Once you’re there, you’re free to walk across the Hoover Dam and get to learn all about its history. And you might enjoy using the binoculars to get a better look at the vista.

Hoover Dam Bypass Bridge

Although the Hoover Dam was constructed in the 1930s, the Mike O’Callaghan-Pat Tillman Memorial Bridge was only recently built in 2010. The intention was so cars can drive to Arizona over Interstate 11 and alleviate the traffic over the dam. It also made it safer for pedestrians to explore the dam.

The cool thing about the overlook bridge is that pedestrians can also climb up the bridge by using the stairs or the ramp. Once on top of the bridge, there’s an amazing view of this desert country.

It’s worth mentioning that the Seven Magic Mountains is free to visit as of the writing of this article. However, the state is thinking about making the Seven Magic Mountains a paid attraction. If they do this, they will start requiring tour companies to have a permit in order to visit. Therefore, if you’re considering taking this tour, you should make sure to do it soon!

When you’re with a knowledgeable driver and guide who knows so much about each of your stops (and also where the three bathrooms are on the tour), your trip is so much more stress free. Plus you learn much more about the Hoover Dam, Boulder City, and the other stops than you would if you went on your own. For example, the our tour guide’s grandfather had personally worked on the Hoover Dam and lived in Boulder City! This definitely gave a unique perspective to the tour.

The tour van holds 14 people or fewer, so it’s not a massive 52-passenger bus of strangers. For example, at the Lake Mead Panoramic Lookout, our tour guide poured water from water bottles on the cliff so the antelope ground squirrels would come out to drink the water that’s so hard for them to find in the desert. We got an up-close view of these cute critters. That’s probably not something we would have thought to do otherwise!

Plunge Into An Exciting Tour of Historic Hoover Dam

Hoover Dam is an easy detour on your return trip to Las Vegas from the Grand Canyon . Hoover Dam is worth the stop if you have a few hours to spare. Over 8 million people a year visit the dam and many plunge into an exciting tour of historic Hoover Dam. Some want to straddle the state line, being in two time zones at the same time. A fascinating marvel of engineering. A visit only takes about 2-3 hours’ time. For us, this was our last stop on our Grand Circle adventure of the Utah 5.

Distinguished History of Hoover Dam

Hoover Dam is one of the seven industrial wonders of the world, one of seven modern civil engineering marvels of the U.S., and one of the world’s top engineering wonders of the 20th century.

The Hoover Dam is a 700-hundred-foot-tall, concrete arch-gravity dam. It provides immense amounts of clean power and helping the surrounding states manage the water resources. On April 20, 1931, construction began on the Hoover Dam, the largest of its kind. What an amazing accomplishment of human ingenuity constructed with the tools they had in that period. They completed it on March 1, 1936. It looms 726 feet above Black Canyon, having a concrete base of 660 feet; and 1244 feet across the top. The electricity generated provides energy for Arizona , Nevada , and Southern California . Hoover Dam Website.

Hoover Dam is open year-round except on Christmas and Thanksgiving Day. The Visitor Center is open from 5 am – 9 pm. Security will inspect your car before parking. This is a federal facility and carrying a firearm on the premises in a federal offense, so leave your firearm at the hotel or home.

What Things Can We Do at Hoover Dam?

Historically before 911, your trip to Hoover Dam would drive directly over the dam. However, in today’s climate of security, the Intestate bypasses the dam. This is a good detour, even if you just take in the view. It can easily occupy an hour or two of your downtime.

First off, don’t fall for the paid parking garage ($10). If you’re willing to walk a short to moderate distance, free parking is available on the opposite side of Dam. There are lots of interesting things you can do not just at Hoover Dam but in the nearby Lake Mead Recreation area, too.

1. Step-back in Two Time Zones – Hoover Dam

Walking across the dam gives an amazing sense of scale. On one side you see the expanse of Lake Mead. Although the water was historically very low, the lake extends 110-miles. On the opposite side, you can see the sheer canyon walls as the dam drops to the riverbed below where the Colorado River continues its journey towards the Gulf of California.

There is a plaque on the top of the dam at the halfway point on the bridge. This is the Nevada/Arizona state line. You can stand in two states and two time zones by straddling the line. There is a clock on the Nevada side (Pacific Time Zone)and a clock on the Arizona side (Mountain Time Zone). We found it most interesting that you can stand in two time zones at Hoover Dam. On the Nevada side, there are several other plaques and monuments dedicated to those that lost their lives during the massive construction project. The most moving memorial is a bronze plaque commemorating the 96 men who officially died during the construction of Hoover Dam. It part it reads, “They died to make the desert bloom.”

2. Walk through History in the Visitor Center

 For many visitors on a Hoover Dam tour, their first stop is the Hoover Dam Visitor Center. The visitor center charges an entrance fee ($10) to see the exhibits. The exhibits are really interesting and explain the engineering and construction in great detail. Admission also gets you into the 1940s era topographical map presentation in the original exhibit building. Watch the video presentation and immerse yourself in the history of Hoover Dam. The interactive displays walk you through the vision, the design phase, building construction, and operations at the dam. Interesting that Herbert Hoover himself envisioned the concrete arch-gravity dam would subsidise itself through the generation of hydroelectricity and eventually pay for itself. He was correct at a cost of 49 million. The dam recouped the cost with interest in 1987.

You can walk onto the observation deck for a better view of the dam and Lake Mead. Lake Mead is one of the largest artificial lakes in the world, and it is the largest reservoir in the United States in terms of water capacity.

NOTE: All visitors must go through the TSA security checkpoint to enter the Visitor Center. They allow only bottled water on the tours.

Parking, Gift Shop & Observation Deck

There is a bathroom in the parking garage. To access the bathroom in the visitor’s center, you must pay the entrance fee. If you take any of the tours, you will need to purchase tickets and I thought the tours were expensive. However, if you cannot get to Glen Canyon (which is cheaper to tour) then I would be remiss if I did not recommend the tour.

They have a gift shop in case you need to buy more water , hat to keep the sun off your face, or anything you may collect. There is a cafe that offers sandwiches and drinks, a little overpriced, I’d suggest that you pack a cooler and bring beverages and snacks and just grab a bench or a lookout area of lake Mead and sit in the shade or car and enjoy the view.

3. Purchasing Tickets for your Exciting Historic Tour of Hoover Dam

There are three levels of tickets: (no online ticket sales available)

Note: Currently tickets are on a first come first serve basis.

• Visitor Center & Exhibits $10.00
• Power Plant Tour- 30-minute guided tour $15.00
• VIP Tour – 1 hour guided tour includes the power plant and elevator to the interior of the dam. $30.00
• All tour prices include entrance into the Visitor Center. Tours operate 9am-5pm.

Exhilarating VIP Tour of Historic Hoover Dam

The VIP tour is remarkable. The VIP tour leaves on a schedule and you are buying a ticket for a specific time. You descend the elevator, 530 feet to see the inner workings. The fully narrated guided tour details the inner works of the dam. The narrative covers the turbines, penstocks and hydroelectric generation capabilities of the Hoover Dam. This tour you walk through the inspection tunnels. It was amazing to see out from one of the ventilator shafts in the dam wall. I found the tour to fascinating, not to mention inside the dam is so much cooler temperature considering the outside temperature was over 100 degrees.

4. Mike O’Callaghan-Pat Tillman Memorial Bridge

To fully take in the panorama of the Hoover dam stop on your way out to walk the Pat Tillman Memorial Bridge. It can be accessed by crossing back over the dam, taking the switchbacks up the hill to the parking lot approximately a mile away further along. From the parking lot, it is a short walk up multiple concrete steps to the Bridge. Bring plenty of drinking water, or refill your water bottle at the many drinking fountains.

O’Callaghan-Pat Tillman Memorial Bridge is another monumental engineering feat. – they built it from both sides and met in the middle with only a 9.5 mm correction needed. The new bridge spans 1,900 feet across Black Canyon and 900 feet above the Colorado River.

We had a slight breeze, so we walked across the Mike O’Callaghan-Pat Tillman Memorial Bridge to take some pictures. The views are incredible! The height can be a little intimidating for those that fear heights. There are interpretive signs detailing the building of the pedestrian bridge.

5. Lake Mead National Recreation Area

At 247 square miles, this is the largest reservoir in the United States. Why not take advantage of spending a day walking the sandy shoreline or kayaking through one of the many secluded coves? The beautiful azure waters make this an inviting destination for those that enjoy a day on the water. Boaters, swimmers, and avid hikers will find amazing landscapes in this year-round playground. We took the scenic drive along the lake shore, stopping several times at the overlooks with breathtaking views.

The waters of the lake are chilly 60 degrees, but that does not seem to chase the swimmers away at Boulder Beach. This area is popular with day travelers and campers. They waive the entrance fee if you have the “ America the Beautiful pass .” The  Boulder Beach Campground  has nearly 150 large paved tent/RV sites. Each site has a fire pit/grill and table. Potable water spigots and restrooms are throughout the campground. Group camping is also available for reservation only. The  Lake Mead RV Village  is next to the campground and includes RV sites with full hookups and 24-hour shower and laundry facilities.

Leave no Trace : All plants, wildlife, geologic features (rocks), and archeological artifacts are protected. They permit no collecting in the recreation area.

6. Boating on Lake Mead

In Boulder City, there are two marinas. The Las Vegas boating marina and the Lake Mead marina. It’s a charming little place with boats, mooring and rentals, a small store, and a nice restaurant-The Harbor House Cafe. This floating restaurant hovers over the crystal clear waters of the lake. Today, the A/C is a welcome reprieve from the 100-degree temperatures. It is a magnificent spot for a light lunch without breaking the bank. If you choose to you can rent a pontoon boat, or jet ski.

Note: Feeding the Carp seems to be a popular tourist attraction at the marina. Carp seems to swarm in large numbers for either bread or popcorn. We don’t condone feeding wildlife. However, the carp population has eaten much of the grass in the lake. The ecosystem is out of balance.

7. Thrilling Kayaking on Lake Mead

Who does not want to soak in hot springs with names like boy scout, gold strike, and Arizona? Well, if you book a kayak adventure, you will get an opportunity to bask in these hot springs. Evolution Expeditions has the perfect kayak tour for any skill level. The Hoover Dam & Hot Springs tour begins at Dam, giving you a water level view. The paddle is 12-miles, a full day so not for the faint of heart. You paddle to Emerald and Sauna Cove. Your professional guides provide a light lunch and narrated the history of the dam and lake. If you are lucky, you can spot Bighorn Sheep, Eagles, and other wildlife native to the area.

We recommend you to wear a bathing suit and fishing shirt . Also remember, sunscreen , hat , sunglasses , water shoes and a dry bag for camera , valuables and a change of clothes. This tour is first-come, first-serve as the National Park Service only issues a few permits on certain dates.

8. Tunnels, Slot and Hiking Trails. Oh-My!

There are nine wilderness areas within the Lake Mead NRA. You can park for free and walk 4.5 miles to the Hoover Dam, passing through five tunnels that were carved through the mountains to help build the dam.

The Railroad Trail

This is a popular 8.2-mile out and back trail near Boulder City, Nevada. If you are a history buff, this is a must see. The mostly flat trail follows an old railroad bed high above Lake Mead. Just off Lakeshore drive, you can park for free and walk 4.5 miles to the Hoover Dam (just remember, you have to walk back again). Many families and dog walkers frequent this trail. The information signs will guide you through the construction of the railroad and the tunnels that were carved in the mountains. We found the five tunnels were very intriguing. They originally built the railroad tunnels to take materials to the Hoover Dam construction site. Excellent photographic opportunities, with stunning views of Lake Mead.

Note: You really should have sturdy  walking or hiking shoes  to traverse the trails. A quality  trekking stick  would be advisable on the trails with loose gravel. Remember to have a  refillable water bottle  to quench your thirst in the heat.

Remarkable Owl Canyon Trail

This is a fairly easy 3.5-mile loop. Owl Canyon Trail is along Lakeshore Drive, the parking area at 33 Hole in Lake Mead National Recreation Area. The trail is not well marked. Be sure to download the AllTrails map before you go. Just before reaching the canyon, take the left fork. After you descend into the slot canyon, there is plenty of shade. I would recommend doing this trial in the early morning before it gets too hot. They named the canyon for the white owls that live here. They stain the walls with excrement, “white wash” left behind by the many barn owls. We did not see any owls on our day hike, but saw a coyote. and regurgitated owl pellets.

 Lake Mead offers fantastic sport fishing with plenty of largemouth bass, striped bass, crappie, rainbow trout, channel catfish and bluegill to entice anglers. Beautiful rock formations line the shores of the lake. Even if you do not catch fish, the views are spectacular. The grass rushes that line the lake’s edge are home to many waterfowl species — ducks, geese, swans, and redwing blackbirds.

9. Hidden Gem See the Original Wild West

Inside the recreation area is a true hidden gem. A wild west ghost town that was flooded when Lake Mead first filled up in the 1930s has reemerged in recent years. Once submerged 60 feet below the lake now because of the drought, the town of St. Thomas is now permanently high and dry. They found the town in 1865, the Mormon settlers at the confluence of the Muddy and Virgin rivers, prime fertile ground for farming. The town, at one point, had a residency of 500 people. We can see today only the foundations of the buildings. The National Park Service protects the ruins as a historic site within the northern Lake Mead National Recreation Area.

Getting there from Las Vegas, head north on I-15. Take exit 93 towards Overton. Just outside town, take the left on Old St. Thomas Road. The 3-mile dirt road is mostly washboard but is traversable. The 2¼-mile interpretive trail has 14 signs detailing the history with archival images of the original town.

Final Thoughts on our Electrifying Plunge into Historic Hoover Dam

Today, the temperature is 117 degrees. If you plan to visit in the summer, expect higher temperatures and larger crowds. I’m thinking next time January through March may be a better time to visit the dam. Make memories: the history behind the dam is fascinating. There is more than just the dam to see. You could spend a few days here. However, if you are on a budgeted schedule, take the shorter tour of the Glen Canyon Recreational Area . The exciting Hoover Dam VIP tour is definitely an easy day trip from Las Vegas or on the trip to Grand Canyon Natio nal Park.

Transportation To The Hoover Dam

To embark on your own self-guided tour of the Hoover dam, you are going to need your own set of wheels. Ideally, you have driven to Las Vegas in your own car. You can also rent a car from the Las Vegas Airport Rental Car center. 

If you are looking for more of an adventure or looking to make more of a grand entrance at the Hoover Dam, there are some fun options for you.

Slingshot Rental

Every day we are out leading tours of the Hoover Dam we see people driving around in these 3 wheeled road beasts, and I have to say, these people look like they are having a ton of fun. Considering the Hoover Dam is only 40 minutes from the Las Vegas strip, renting a Slingshot from a local rental agency. Rentals for 4 hours start at $399.

Exotic Car Rental

Compared to Slingshots, we don't see as many exotic cars at the Hoover Dam, but when we do, they sure turn heads. Renting an exotic car is an excellent way to have an unforgettable time but does come at a price. Renting a Ferrari F8 Spider for 4 hours starts at $899 plus taxes and fees.

Motorcyle/Scooter

We don't recommend renting a scooter and riding it to the Hoover Dam. There is not any way to get to the Hoover Dam that doesn't involve riding on a busy highway. Safety first.

For experienced riders, renting a classic motorcycle and driving it across the Hoover Dam is going to be an exciting experience and one not to be missed.

What To See On A Self-Guided Hoover Dam Tour

When it was finished in the 1930s, the Hoover Dam was the largest dam in the world. To say it is huge is an understatement, and when trying to visit it, you can easily spend the better part of a day trying to see it all. To help you prioritize your self-guided Hoover Dam tour, we have ranked the following Hoover Dam attractions in order from a must-see, to nice to see.

1. Walking Across the Top Of the Dam

The walk across the top of the Hoover dam is so good that we include it on all of our tours that stop at the Hoover Dam. The feeling of peeking your head over the edge and looking down the face of the dam is exhilarating and these feelings are the reason we travel. Don't leave the Hoover Dam until you have a chance to walk on top of it.

There are a few places to park for your walk across the dam. If you are planning on seeing the visitor's center, gift shop, and the powerplant at the bottom of the dam, you can park at the visitors center for $10. Note that you can access all of these from the free parking mentioned below, but it will be a longer walk.

You can also park for free on the Arizona side of the dam in lots 11, 12, or 13. We like lot 12 the best for its view and easy access to the dam, but any of them would work well.

2. Walking Out On The Mike O'Callaghan–Pat Tillman Memorial Bridge

The Mike O'Callaghan–Pat Tillman Memorial Bridge is the second highest bridge in the United States and offers sweeping views of the Hoover Dam, Lake Mead, and the Colorado River. Walking up the bridge from the parking lot only takes 10 minutes and is completely free. The great views, the low cost, and the short amount of time needed to visit make this one of the can't-miss stops on any itinerary of the Hoover Dam.

The view from the bridge is the best place to get iconic photos of the full face of the Hoover Dam.

3. Take a Tour Inside the Hoover Dam

There are two fantastic tours you can take inside the Hoover Dam: The shorter Powerplant tour, and the longer Dam Tour. Both include a self guided tour of the visitors center.

Powerplant Tour

A guided powerplant tour costs $15 per person ages 11+, $10 for ages 4-10, and free for ages 3 and under. Tickets can be bought on-site at the visitors center or online here:

Once you have your ticket you can proceed to the visitor center and follow the signs for the powerplant tour, tours depart every 15 minutes and times cannot be reserved in advance, you just line up when you arrive.

The powerplant tours includes a walk through original construction tunnels, a visit to the viewing platform overlooking a 30-foot diameter penstock – feel the vibration created by water rushing through the pipe. You will also see 8 of the commercial generators in the Nevada Powerhouse and get a self-guided visitor center tour

The Dam tour includes everything in the Powerplant tour plus a visit to of the historic tunnels and a ride original elevator to the bottom of the Hoover Dam, a walk through the inspection tunnels at the center of Hoover Dam, and a view of the Colorado River through the inspection ventilation shaft.

4. View The Back Of the Dam From Arizona

After driving halfway across the dam, you will enter Arizona. The border between Nevada and Arizon is the Colorodo River. Follow the road up the hill, stoping at as many of the parking lots as you have time for to get some great views and photos. Our favorite lots are Parking lot 12 and the top with the gift shop.

5. Hoover Dam Museum in Boulder City

This completely free museum is a great way to learn all about the history and building process of the Hoover Dam. It can be visited in about 30 minutes and is in historic downtown Boulder City, which has more places to explore and some fun spots to grab breakfast, lunch, or dinner.

Bonus Stops

Ok, so you got your rental car (or Slingshot), and you want to make the most of it for the time that you have it. We also like people to get the most out of their tours and love to add extra stops to them. Here are some of the best bonus stops you may want to add to your self-guided Hoover Dam tour.

Hemmenway Park

This local park in Boulder City offers sweeping views of Lake Mead. Also, there are often a bunch of big horned sheep grazing on the park grass, but keep in mind, these are wild animals.

This stop is on the way to the Hoover Dam and is well worth the 15 minutes need to see the big horn sheep with the lake in the background.

Lake Mead Overlook

On the way to the Hoover Dam, this overlook offers some of the best views of Lake Mead and can be visited in less than 5 minutes on your way to the dam.

Can I See the Inside of the Hoover Dam?

While you’re free to walk around the top of the dam on your own, you can’t take a self-guided Hoover Dam tour inside the dam itself. Unfortunately, the only way to get inside is by purchasing a ticket to one of the guided tours offered by the staff. There are a few different options if you want a guided tour, so make sure you check them all out before making a decision, especially since they aren’t especially cheap.

The least expensive ticket is $10 and gives you access to the Hoover Dam visitor center and observation platform. There’s some interesting information in the visitor center and a neat 3D model of the dam itself, but we’d recommend springing for one of the actual tours. For $15, you can also take a tour of the power plant at the bottom of the dam. This tour includes some terrific views of the enormous penstocks that transfer water to the turbines, as well as 8 of the dam’s 17 generators. Finally, $30 will get you a guided tour of the dam itself, including the inspection tunnels and the original elevator to the top of the dam. Both guided tours also include tickets to the visitor center, and the full tour includes tickets for the power plant tour as well, so you’re not missing out on anything.

Any tour inside the dam is run by the operators of the dam rather than the tour operator. If you book a group tour, it's unlikely you will be able to get more than the quicker "powerplant" tour, since the "dam tour" cannot be purchased in advance. Check if an inside tour is included in the price quoted and which tour they promise.
