Having Fun in the Texas Sun

Family friendly Texas Destinations

Mardi Gras (for families), Galveston

fashion person holiday people

Don’t let anyone ever tell you that you can’t take the entire family to Mardi Gras!  It’s really a very family-friendly event, with TONS of fun during the almost non-stop parades and celebrations the two weeks leading up to Fat Tuesday!

jolly jester jaunt galveston

Know Before You Go

Check the schedule before you go, and make your plans so you don’t miss any of the festivities!

Dress Up!  Shop for crazy hats, mask or complete costumes!  You can be ANYTHING at Mardi Gras, there is NO DRESS CODE!!

Most activities take place on the weekends, and during the week it’s mostly locals, which is a fun change of pace in this touristy town!

Beads!  When it’s all over, She (or he) with the MOST beads wins!  Everywhere you go, people will give you beads, and it’s WONDERFUL!  At least until you get home and wonder what to do with 79 lbs of Mardi Gras beads!

Jolly Jester Jaunt 5K (and why you should do it) Mardi Gras is ALL about decadent celebrating, so I don’t know why they added the 5K run, but we love a fun 5K, and the first 300 runners registered receive a FREE 1/2 day Balcony Party Ticket!!!  Like everything else at Mardi Gras, the more you dress up, the more fun you have!

purple and gold mask on purple surface

The BIG parades, such as the Krewe of Aquarius and the Knights of Momus Grand Night Parade, all start on the Seawall and go through the city to the Strand, which gives you plenty of places to watch the parade!  The entire parade is family-friendly, but I’d recommend staying off the Strand for the large parades because it’s SO crowded.

The Knights of Momus Grand Night Parade was our favorite, with lights and beads everywhere!!  We watched just off the Strand, (outside of the paid Entertainment Area) and we got SO many beads we couldn’t carry them all!  We found parking right down the street, and were surrounded by families!

Best tip is DRESS UP!!  Wear something that attracts the people on the floats, a crazy hat, a mask, or just look super cute (which is why my kids always have 3 times as many beads as me!)!

Police are EVERYWHERE, mainly just for crowd control!

Deck your little kids in lights, glow sticks or whatever you have, so the floats and other people can see them!

CIMG0065

Shriners Hospital for Children’s Parade

Krewe of Barkus and Meowus

Mardi Gras Children’s Parade

The “Family Parades” all take place in the Downtown Entertainment District, and were SO much fun!  Our favorite was the Krewe of Barkus and Meowus, which wasn’t just limited to dogs and cats!  We saw ferrets, chickens, ponies and many pot-bellied pigs, too! Also, this takes place on Sunday, when access to The Strand is free.

CIMG0057

As a jeep owner (that hasn’t driven in years), my favorite moment of the parade was when all the jeeps from the South Coast Jeep Club did THIS!!!

The Golf Cart Parade

I’m beyond wanting to just WATCH the Golf Cart Parade, I’ve already been hitting up my golf cart owning friends to see who will loan me one next year so I can ENTER the parade!  Why?  Golf Cart parade entries receive FREE entry into the Entertainment District & Best Decorated Golf Cart gets FREE Balcony Party Passes!  That’s good enough for me!

Balcony Parties

During the Childrens Parades, the balconies are fine for kids!  They’ll love getting to throw beads out into the crowd of people below begging for them!  At night and for the larger parades, leave them in the hotel room with Grandma!

CIMG0072

Remember, Mardi Gras is about celebrating, and over-celebrating the beginning of lent, so there is FOOD (and drink) everywhere!  The local restaurants all over the island have specials and parties, too!

The shops along the Strand are open during Mardi Gras!  Your first stop should be my favorite shop, Nautical Antiques on Mechanic!  Then get your palm read at The Witchery on Post Office, or grab something sweet at La King’s Confectionery or Hey Mikey Ice Cream.  The Peanut Butter Warehouse has revived this old warehouse from my youth into a fun shopping destination with numerous vendors. Hendley Market , on the Strand, is where “bare feet and dogs are welcome”, and is has a fun assortment in an 1858 building.  The Strand Emporium has sandwiches, ice cream and gifts to take back home! The crab cakes at The Shark Shack on The Strand are my most recent food obsessions!

More Things To Do in Galveston

Some people may say it’s too cold in February to play on the beach, but there are plenty of other things to do in Galveston, no matter the temperature!

Beat the heat and the summer crowds at the Galveston Island Historic Pleasure Pier!  Click HERE for more information!

Moody Gardens has three pyramids filled with Discovery, Aquatic and Rainforest creatures!  Click HERE for more information!

Duck Tours is where education meets fun, on this island tour that goes through the streets of Galveston and then plunges into Galveston Bay!  Click HERE for more information.

In a town filled with touristy restaurants, one of our local’s favorites is Shrimp ‘n’ Stuff on Avenue O!  The O is for “O, this taste incredible!”!

I love the Galveston Hilton year round, but especially during Mardi Gras, when the parade route goes right in front of the hotel.

If you have your own crewe, then check the parade route (which is subject to change year to year) and try to find a vacation rental on the interior streets on the route, and your party never has to stop!

The Tremont House on Ships Mechanic Row has a bird’s eye view of the Downtown Entertainment District, and rooms book quickly for Mardi Gras, but if you are planning ahead….

Mardi Gras! Galveston: The Ultimate Guide (2024)

jolly jester jaunt galveston

If you're visiting Mardi Gras! Galveston for the first time, staying in a  Galveston vacation rental makes it easy to hop around to all the events across the island. Pack your most colorful costumes, sequins, and hats, and let the good times roll for an unforgettable weekend (or two).

This guide will help you plan when to come, where to go, and what you don't want to miss during the Mardi Gras celebrations in Galveston.

2024 Mardi Gras! Galveston

Mardi Gras! Galveston always takes place during the two weeks leading up to Lent.

In 2024, the Mardi Gras festivities will be held from February 2 to 13, with events each Friday, Saturday, and Sunday, plus the final Mystic Krewe of Aquarius evening parade on "Fat Tuesday."

Tickets start at $14 for a single-day pass or $24 for a two-day weekend pass (plus handling fees).

About Mardi Gras! Galveston

A staple in Galveston since 1871, this annual event wraps in two weekends of Carnival season celebrations leading up to the Mardi Gras! Galveston holiday on Shrove Tuesday. Every February, the streets fill with brass bands, funky umbrellas, decked-out golf carts, and bright costumes.

During this time, locals and visitors alike join in the revelry that includes dozens of parades, special events, parties, and live music in Galveston’s historic downtown.

Mardi Gras! Galveston Parades

jolly jester jaunt galveston

The Galveston Krewes organize most of these zany spectacles — some have special themes or support local nonprofits.

If you can't wait to catch some beads and dance along to the beats of the drum, park yourself along the Galveston Strand on any weekend day during Mardi Gras, and you'll be sure to see one of the merry processions winding down the street.

The  parade schedule changes yearly and is listed online a few months in advance.

Don't want to miss the best of the best? Below are a few of the biggest and quirkiest Mardi Gras parades that should be on your radar.

Mystic Krewe of Aquarius Parade

The second oldest of Galveston's Krewes, the Mystic Krewe puts on a pair of parades during Mardi Gras, including the annual Fat Tuesday procession.

Find a spot in the Historic District and join the revelers as marching bands set the beat, dance teams boogie by, and dozens of colorful floats glide between the old town buildings.

The Funky Uptown Umbrella Brigade

This parade has been breaking World Records for having the most decorated umbrellas for over a decade. 2019 saw almost 2,000 people take part, and the event continues to grow — an even bigger turnout is expected for 2024!

Krewe of Gambrinus Parade

It's beads, beads, beads at the Krewe of Gambrinus Parade, the first weekend of Mardi Gras! Galveston. One of the celebration's Super Parades, this one includes more than a dozen giant floats and bands marching from the Seawall through the Entertainment District and down The Strand. Not to mention hundreds of thousands of colorful Mardi Gras beads.

Annual Zaniest Golf Cart Parade

For a unique celebratory experience, check out the Annual Zaniest Golf Cart Parade held in the Galveston Entertainment District. Gather friends and family to participate in this interactive display of the zany spirit of Mardi Gras! Free Entertainment District entry is offered to all participants of the parade.

Knights of Momus Grand Night Parade

Scheduled on the second weekend of Mardi Gras Galveston, the Knights of Momus parade is a local staple, organized by the oldest Krewe group on the island.

You can join the party along the Seawall, or catch them on The Strand as decked-out floats, confetti, and brass bands roll along the road after dark.

Entertainment at Mardi Gras Galveston

jolly jester jaunt galveston

Concerts typically start in the evenings on Fridays and in the early afternoon on Saturdays and Sundays, with special headliners taking the stage at night. The main venue for Galveston's Mardi Gras concerts is Saengerfest Park on the corner of Strand Street and 23rd Street in the Historic District.

Fiesta Gras!

Hispanic members of the Galveston community will gather on Sunday 4th February for concerts and parades that celebrate the rich Latin American culture of our city. Expect music of a wide variety of genres and parades that showcase Hispanic influences at their most vibrant.

Special Events at Mardi Gras Galveston

jolly jester jaunt galveston

George P. Mitchell Mardi Gras! Award Presentation

This award honors Texan philanthropist Mitchell and other individuals and groups that have been vital to Mardi Gras’ rebirth and preservation in Galveston. Recipients are honored each year with a ceremony outside Tremont House and their names are added to a plaque that hangs inside the building. Don’t miss the honorees parade after the ceremony — it officially kicks off the Mardi Gras! Galveston celebrations.

Jolly Jester Jaunt 5K

Mardi Gras goers can run or walk off all the King cakes during the annual Jolly Jester Jaunt 5K .

Scheduled for the first weekend of Mardi Gras!, this fun run loops around the Entertainment District, under the colorful Mardi Gras arch, and through The Strand District. Runners usually dress up in festive costumes — you’ll feel like part of a parade as you make your way through the heart of the Mardi Gras! zone.

The run registration includes a two-day admission to Mardi Gras! Galveston, access to a balcony party, a participation medal, free drinks, and other fun goodies.

Family Gras!

Mardi Gras! Galveston has a whole special day for kids and families to enjoy together. While some activities like a coloring contest take place before Mardi Gras!, there's a trio of back-to-back kid-friendly afternoon parades during the festival.

Family Gras! Galveston kicks off with the Shriners Hospitals for Children & Sunshine Kids Parade, where clowns, floats, and mini cars cruise down the strand tossing beads and candy.

Next up is the Krewe of Barkus and Meoux Parade, where pet parents get to adorn their four-legged family members in crazy costumes. This is a local favorite and includes a costume contest.

The events wrap up with the Firefighters Children's Parade. For nearly 20 years, local first responders have organized this special kiddie display full of floats, fire trucks, and beads on the second Mardi Gras weekend.

First Responders Day

One day of the Mardi Gras Galveston celebrations each year is set aside as First Responders Day, with free admission for active service members, veterans, and first responders (with ID), plus a guest. This year (2024), it’s Friday, February 9th.

Tips for Visiting Galveston for Mardi Gras

jolly jester jaunt galveston

Mardi Gras Galveston Location

Most Mardi Gras Galveston events and concerts take place in the Downtown Historic District around The Strand, primarily between Harborside Drive and Mechanic Street from 20th Street to 25th Street.

Some parade routes and activities extend to the beachfront and Seawall Boulevard, stretching from 25th Street to 57th Street.

Admission and Tickets

Ticketing varies from event to event. Here is a general round-up of pricing.

Mardi Gras Historic Entertainment District

To enter the designated Mardi Gras Historic Entertainment District in Downtown Galveston during the event, you must purchase a general admission ticket. The fee includes all parades and concerts on the day you visit.

You can purchase tickets for one day, a weekend, or the five-day general admission pass. Kids aged 12 and under are free with an adult.

Balcony Parties

Balcony parties offer a great view of the Mardi Gras festivities. You'll have to act fast, as only select balcony tickets are available for purchase. A ticket generally includes gate admission and entrance into a designated balcony party space.

Free Viewing

If you want to see a parade without purchasing a ticket, pick a spot along the Seawall outside of the Mardi Gras Historic Downtown Entertainment District during one of the Super Parades listed above.

Mardi Gras! Parking

Downtown Galveston has metered street parking and a few paid lots along Market Street and Postoffice Street.

Keep in mind that most lots are cash only. If you take a taxi or rideshare service from your Galveston vacation rental to the Mardi Gras! Entertainment Area, there is a designated pickup and drop-off zone at Market Street and 23rd Street.

What to Wear to Mardi Gras! Galveston

Mardi Gras! Galveston is a festive time and a great chance to wear all your glittery, colorful, and flashy outfits.

It's common to see lots of sequins, feathers, wigs, hats, and other fun costumes. Be sure to check the forecast before packing. February temperatures on Galveston Island have a wide range and can be in the low 40s or warm up to the 60s and 70s.
