Frequently Asked Questions

You can expect to pay at least $325 per person for a helicopter ride. However, fees will vary by company, tour length and inclusions.

A good rule of thumb is to tip your pilot (who typically doubles as your tour guide) about $15 to $20 per passenger. Alternatively, you can tip 15% to 20% of the total cost of your tour. Tipping is greatly appreciate by pilots, but not mandatory.

Your flight outfit should be something your comfortable in; if you choose a doors-off tour, you may want to bring an extra layer. Multiple companies also recommend wearing solid, dark clothing to limit the glare on the windows in order to snap better photos.

Anytime of day is perfect for flying, thanks to Hawaii's gorgeous weather. However, it's recommended you book your flight well in advance to get your preferred day. You'll also want to schedule a tour at the beginning of your trip in case your flight is canceled; this way, you'll have more opportunities to rebook.

All tours have a maximum total weight for all passengers. However, individual companies and aircraft have different limits. Contact your tour provider before you book for their policies. Additionally, you may be weighed before your flight so the crew can assign seats to evenly distribute passenger weight.

Maui Helicopter Tours FAQ

All of the Maui helicopter tours listed on this page depart from the heliport at the Kahului Airport , where you likely started your trip if you flew to the island. That’s about a 30-60 minute car ride from most of the popular places to stay in West Maui and South Maui .

It’s hard to say exactly how far in advance you should book a Maui helicopter tour. For any activity in Maui, we usually recommend at least three months in advance to be safe. However, for helicopter tours, you could probably get away with a few weeks in advance. During peak seasons or holidays, booking even further in advance is advisable.

The duration of Maui helicopter tours can vary depending on your chosen tour. Typically, these tours range from 30 minutes to 2 hours in duration. Shorter tours usually focus on specific areas or landmarks, while longer tours offer a more comprehensive experience, covering multiple attractions. It’s best to check with the tour operator for precise details on tour durations.

Yes, you can usually bring a camera on a Maui helicopter tour. Many tour operators allow passengers to bring cameras or smartphones to capture the breathtaking views from the helicopter. However, it’s important to check with the specific tour company beforehand to ensure there are no restrictions or special guidelines regarding photography equipment.

Yes, there are often age and weight restrictions for Maui helicopter tours. The specific restrictions can vary depending on the tour operator and aircraft used. Generally, children under a certain age may be required to sit on a parent’s lap, and there might be weight limitations for safety reasons. It’s important to check with the tour company in advance if you’re not sure.

The number of people that can fit in a helicopter tour depends on the type of helicopter the tour operator uses. Most helicopters used for tours in Maui can accommodate between 4 to 7 passengers, including the pilot. However, there are also options for private tours or larger groups that can accommodate more passengers.

Motion sickness can affect individuals differently, and some may experience it during a Maui helicopter tour. The nature of helicopter flights, including maneuvers and changes in altitude, can contribute to motion sickness for susceptible individuals. To minimize the risk, taking motion sickness medication, sitting in a forward-facing seat, avoiding heavy meals before the tour, and focusing on the horizon or fixed points during the flight is advisable.

Soar With Us in the Hawaiian Skies!

I took my son for a holiday gift and was a bit nervous, but the ride was very smooth and actually calming. It was an enjoyable ride and loved seeing all the breathtaking views from the a much different vantage point. It was an incredible experience that we’ll always remember.

The ground crew were efficient and helpful, our pilot was highly experienced, professional and very informative about the island, as well as being very entertaining. It was a great tour and a great experience - highly recommended.

Sunshine helicopters did an amazing job of flying our family into the Waimea canyon, thru the waterfalls and around the Napali coast. Our pilot was extremely skilled and a great guide of the sights! The flight was smooth and comfortable but we were in awe and amazement of the scenery.

So thankful for my daughter who read up about helicopter tours on our first visit to Kauai. No other way to experience the untouched beauty of this island. Happy with sunshine helicopters and enjoyed Steve, our pilot. Funny and informative, made the trip special! No regrets and got spectacular pictures!

A helicopter tour is a must on Kaua'i if you want to really see the island. Sunshine staff was great from the gals at the sign in, to the safety briefing and ride to the airport, and then the flight itself. We opted for the 1st class flight on the whisper helicopter and it was worth the small difference in price to sit in the two front seats for the unobstructed views. Our pilot, Jed, was great and provided tons of information about the island. This was one of the highlights of our trip.

Most excellent experience even on a very rainy day across Kauai. Don't let the rain stop you from going on the tour. Despite the rain, we were able to get a very clear view of every point on the island and the extra rain only added to the amount of waterfalls that were able to be seen. Our pilot and ground staff were all great. Highly recommend Sunshine Helicopters in Lihue.

My son and I sat up front in the Whisper Star, the experience was incredible! Jaw dropping, unreal beauty. Everyone I spoke to and met at Sunshine was friendly and professional. Jed, the pilot, is competent and pleasant. We had a great time and got the video. Unreal beauty on Kauai.

The helicopter tour was amazing - we saw all the best known spots and also some where no one has ever walked before. Our pilot made sure we also got some adrenaline rush, but just the right amount! He also provided us with great explanation of what we were seeing and what to look out for. Would definitely recommend!

This excursion was unbelievable! Could not have been any better. All staff were exceptional. In over 55 years of travel this was one of the best “adventures “ I’ve ever experienced

Description

There is no place on Earth like Maui, the Valley Isle, and most of it is very remote and completely inaccessible. You've never really seen Maui if you haven't seen it from the air. Air Maui Helicopter tours invites you to choose from four flight choices below. Exact routes and sights will vary from flight to flight. We recommend the morning flight times, because clouds are less of a factor and it is typically the clearest time of the day. Helicopter tours are very popular, and if you want to guarantee a morning flight time, make your reservation well in advance before arriving in Hawaii.

Front seat upgrades are available for $50 per seat. Guests must purchase both front seats, and combined passenger weight must not exceed 380 pounds. The option is offered when you are entering your name and body weight during the second page of the reservation process.

Tour Options

West Maui & Molokai - 60 minutes The West Maui and Molokai helicopter tours are considered the best. We highly recommend this tour, and it is by far our favorite flight! The tour crosses the channel to the island of Molokai, and you will gaze upon the stunning 3,000 foot vertical sea cliffs and the tallest waterfall in the islands. The Kalaupapa Peninsula (Father Damien's leper colony) on the north shore of Molokai and West Maui Mountians waterfalls are also sites to be admired on this flight!

60 Min. West Maui / Molokai Tour Rate (AMH1)

$430.00 per Passenger   (Hawaii sales tax included)

West Maui & Molokai - 45 minutes After soaring past the coastline of the West Maui Mountains, this flight crosses the channel to the island of Molokai. Feast your eyes on the breathtaking 3,000 foot vertical sea cliffs and the tallest waterfall in the state of Hawaii.

45 Min. West Maui / Molokai Tour Rate (AMH2)

$320.00 per Passenger   (Hawaii sales tax included)

Doors Off West Maui & Molokai - 45 minutes Same flight as above, but for an extra level of adventure this tour is operated with the doors OFF! The minimum age for this flight is 10, and anyone 10-18 must be accompanied by an adult. Other restrictions apply, including no loose items, hats, or cameras permitted. ONLY YOUR CELL PHONE is allowed on this flight, as a special lanyard case is provided by Air Maui to secure a cell phone to you during flight. Air Maui will supply a jacket that will be worn during the flight.

45 Min. Doors Off West Maui / Molokai Tour Rate (AMH2do)

$380.00 per Passenger   (Hawaii sales tax included)

Hana & Haleakala - 45 minutes This flight soars your above the moon like surface of Haleakala Crater, Hana Town, and the "Seven Sacred Pools of Oheo." Also, take in the rugged coastline of Maui's north shore with staggering waterfalls and acres of native rain forest.

45 Min. Hana / Haleakala Tour Rate (AMH3)

Complete Island - 60 minutes This flight adds highlights of the West Maui Mountains to the sites in the 45 minute Hana / Haleakala tour.

60 Min. Complete Island Tour Rate (AMH4)

West Maui & Molokai Tour with Oceanfront Landing - 75 minutes This flight adds a touchdown oceanfront landing to the West Maui and Molokai flight. This tour is a 45 minute flight with a 30 minute ground stop. After soaring over the ridges of West Maui, across the Pailolo channel to Molokai, you will land at Air Maui's private landing location on the North shore of Maui. Then your journey continues across the West Maui Mountains back to the heliport.

75 Min. West Maui / Molokai Tour w/ Oceanfront Landing Rate (AMH5)

$390.00 per Passenger   (Hawaii sales tax included)

Schedule: Daily from 8am to 4pm

Check In: 30 minutes prior to tour time at Air Maui's location in the General Aviation area of Kahului Airport, on the far side of the runways from the main terminal.

Aircraft: Eurocopter ASTAR that seats 6 guests plus the pilot.

Restrictions: For the comfort and safety of all passengers, on DOORS ON flights Air Maui requires those who weigh over 240 pounds or couples with a combined weight over 420 pounds to purchase an additional seat which will be left empty. on DOORS OFF flights Air Maui requires those who weigh over 230 pounds or couples with a combined weight over 400 pounds to purchase an additional seat which will be left empty. This policy is necessary because helicopters have limited internal space and overall passenger weights must be calculated prior to take-off to ensure that the vehicle's limitations are not exceeded. This charge may be waived for tall individuals who just exceed the limit if other members in their party are much lighter.

What to Wear: Wear dark shirts as it causes less glare on the windows. Passengers on doors-off flights must wear closed toed shoes that fasten securely to your feet.

Reservations: Advanced reservations required and we recommend booking this a month or more before your arrival. This event is "RESERVE NOW PAY LATER"; we need a credit card on file to finalize your reservation but we do not charge you for this reservation until a few days before the beginning of your vacation!

Minimum Notice for Cancellations / Changes: At least 48 hours before the start of the event. All tours go out rain or shine.

Kevin at Falls

It never ceases to amaze me that people spend thousands of dollars to come to Hawaii, but think it is too expensive to spend another $200-$250 to REALLY see the islands from a helicopter. There is so much beauty that you cannot see any other way. Do yourself a favor and SPLURGE! You will thank me.

Flying in a helicopter is like riding a magic carpet. They are much more stable than twin engine planes … motion sickness is seldom an issue for anyone. They cut through the wind like a knife. Thrill seekers may wish for a more roller coaster-like experience but the pilots fly a very gentle pattern. Don't expect plunging drops and steeply banked turns.

The best time for helicopter tours (as a rule) is in the morning hours, as cloud cover tends to get thicker throughout the afternoon. Don't feel badly if it looks cloudy just before your flight though … helicopters can fly just under the cloud ceiling, which typically is around 4,000 feet. Clouds and rain can add an element of mystical mystery. Check out some of the waterfall photos for an example.

All helicopter tours leave from the Kahului Heliport. Plan on a 45 minute drive from Lahaina / Kaanapali Resorts, 60 minutes from Kapalua, 30 minutes from Kihei and 45 minutes from Wailea. Save yourself some driving … consider planning the helicopter tour for early morning on the day that you drive to Hana.

Wear dark clothing for your helicopter flight. A light colored shirt will cause a reflection on the windows … you won't notice it during your flight, but it shows up like crazy in any pictures you take. A polarizing filter on the front of your camera will also help remove window glare (and greatly improve pictures that you take of the ocean too).

A note about weight restrictions. Almost all companies in Hawaii charge extra for heavier passengers. This is not a matter of discrimination toward larger guests … it is a business reality due to the spatial limitations of the passenger compartment. The cost and profit margins of the helicopter companies is based upon their helicopters flying with every seat occupied. If the helicopter holds 6 passengers and the size of a guest means that they can only comfortably seat 5, they are losing money. The "comfort seat" is exactly that … it really does make everyone more comfortable. It also ensures that the helicopter's overall weight capacity is not exceeded, which makes this a SAFETY CONCERN as well. For each company's exact "comfort seat" policy and charges, see the weight restriction link under each company's description.

Most tour helicopters on Maui are Eurocopter A-STAR's … the seating configuration in each is the same. Two passengers sit up front with the pilot and four sit in the second row. People often say to me, "But the two people in the back seat don't get a window seat." True, but visibility from these helicopters is excellent … you really get a 180 degree view no matter where you sit. Yes, yes, it is cool to sit up front. But I like to describe the entire experience as sitting in a flying theatre. By the way, you don't get to decide where you sit, or pay extra for a front seat. FAA requirements dictate who sits where based upon body weight. I once had a couple that was so adamant about sitting up front that they paid for all six seats. If you are made of money, go for it!!! We'll be glad to set you up!

Air Maui produces a live DVD video of your flight which is available for purchase after your flight. A five-camera system allows the pilot to edit a video "on the fly" including shots inside the cabin so your relatives back home can see your reactions during the flight. The quality of these videos is not as high as professionally shot stock videos but it makes a great souvenir.

My favorite flight is the West Maui / Molokai flight, which is available in a 45 minute and a 60 minute version with Air Maui. I am less crazy about the 45 minute Hana / Haleakala flight. It takes a lot of time to climb to 10,000 feet and take a peak into the crater, which has severely restricted air space. Then the rest of the flight seems to rush by. You get a similar view of Haleakala if you drive to the 10,000 foot summit yourself.

An Adventure For The Whole Family

Be sure to arrive at the Kahului Airport 30 minutes before your scheduled departure time to check in for the flight and meet your pilot. After lifting off, your pilot will head to the interior of the West Maui Mountains, which could be described as a misty wonderland. Steep volcanic ridges covered in thick vegetation reach towards the sky and in between those ridges lay miles of jungle valleys. Highlights of the West Maui Mountains include the Wall of Tears and Maui’s tallest waterfall which is Honokohau Falls. As your pilot follows the West Maui coastline back towards Central Maui, you will be treated to views of the resorts in Kapalua and Kaanapali as well as beautiful and historic Lahaina Town.

After flying over the now overgrown sugarcane and pineapple fields of Central Maui, your pilot will ascend the gentle slopes that lead to the peak of the world’s largest dormant volcano, Haleakala. The inside of Haleakala’s central crater is an otherworldly landscape with massive iron oxide cinder cones that reach over 1,000 feet into the air. Around the backside of Haleakala, enjoy views of Kaupo, Ko’olau Gap, the Seven Sacred Pools, Charles Lindbergh's grave and much much more. Following the coastline, the jungle will become much more dense as you approach the small town of Hana nestled in the rainforest. As the tour continues following the traditional route of the Road to Hana, be prepared to see unforgettable views of the jungles, waterfalls, sea cliffs, and volcanic peninsulas that make this region so incredible. As the tour concludes, you will fly over Maui’s North Shore which is home to legendary surf breaks and the small town of Paia.

A high-definition video of your flight will be available for purchase after your flight. The video will allow you to relive the memories of this amazing experience and it will be narrated by your pilot.

🚁 The 3 Best Maui Helicopter Tours [2024 Reviews]

Maui is famous for its mountain views, picturesque waterfalls, and lush rainforests. However, accessing these can be difficult on a bus tour or guided hike.

A Hana Highway tour is a fantastic way to view many of the waterfalls, stunning rock formations, and to explore the rainforest. However, this will take you a whole day and a lot of hiking. You also won’t get to visit the summit of Haleakala high above.

By taking a helicopter tour in Maui, you can visit all these wonderful natural sites in about an hour. You also benefit from a unique bird’s-eye view that you will never experience on the ground.

There is a wide selection of helicopter trips in Maui. Some Maui helicopter excursions focus on one facet of the island, such as reaching Haleakala’s peak or exploring the coastline. Other Maui helicopter excursions take in everything but don’t offer you as much of an opportunity to catch your breath and take in the view.

Before you choose the best Maui helicopter ride for you and your family, you must decide what’s most important to you. To help you make the best decision, we have reviewed the 3 top-rated helicopter rides in Maui.

Maui Travel Guide

When Polynesian adventurers found and settled the previously uninhabited island of Maui, they thought they had found Paradise. You will too!

There is so much to see and do on this compact island that you are spoiled for choice. You can go whale watching, climb a volcano, hike through tropical rainforest, and learn how to hula dance from professionals.

Before you go, it is in your interest to fully research the accommodations, transport arrangements, local foods, and attractions to ensure you get the most out of your visit. This guide is designed to help you on your way.

Airports & Entry

Most visitors to Maui arrive on an airplane or a cruise liner. Using either method, you’ll most likely arrive in Kahului.

Kahului is the main settlement on Maui, hosting its commercial shopping centers, light industrial areas, a deep-draft harbor for cruise liners, and Kahului Airport.

Although Maui only boasts a population of 155 thousand, over 5 million passengers pass through Kahului Airport every year. Many flights from the mainland involve a layover in Honolulu, but there are direct flights.

When booking, try to get a direct flight to save time. There is only one terminal building at Kahului, but you can find all the usual amenities on the second floor.

The Visitor Information Office in the central building is open from 7:45am to 9:45pm, and there are information desks throughout the airport.

ATMs and internet stations are found throughout the second floor. The airport shops—a DFS, gift store, jewelers, and newsstand—open at times varying from 6am for the newsstand to 8:45am.

All the shops close around 9pm. While the earliest of the 9 food outlets—Starbucks—opens at 5:30am, they are all closed by 10:30pm.

There are 8 car rental companies operating from the airport, but it’s a good idea to book in advance to save time at the airport and ensure that there’s a vehicle available.

A convenient and affordable shuttle service connects the airport to the main tourist accommodation locations on the island, including Wailea, Napili, Makena, Lahaina, Kihei, Kahana, Ka’anapali, Honokawai, and, of course, Kahului’s commercial center.

The Maui Airport Shuttle Service desk can be found in the Baggage Claim area, and no reservations are required. The desk opens at 5:30am and closes after the last flight arrival of the day.

If you are traveling light, the local public transportation system is an affordable option. Cash fares on the Maui Bus service are $2 per person for a single ride or $4 for a day pass.

Route 35 (Haiku) and Route 40 (Upcountry) operate every 90 minutes from 5:30am and 6:00am to 9:40pm and 10:11pm respectively.

However, the public bus has a strict luggage policy, so only one suitcase or carry-on bag is allowed and must fit on the passenger’s lap or under their seat. So, Maui Bus is only an option if you are a “hand luggage only” kind of flyer.

Taxis pick up from the front of the baggage claim area, but they are expensive. The metered rate is $3:00 per mile. That means it would cost you approximately $65 to Makena, $78 to Lahaina, and $105 to Kapalua.

Cruise ships moor at Pier 1 in Kahului Deep Draft Harbor. Maui Bus operates a service that stops at the harbor, and taxis are an option.

It is a 25-minute walk from Pier 1 to the Queen Ka’ahumanu Center, Kahului’s main commercial center and transport hub.

Traveling in the time of Covid

Like many other destinations worldwide, tours and visitor attractions in Maui have adopted special procedures.

Wearing a mask in mandatory in many locations. You will be expected to supply your own mask and wear it when you enter public buildings.

Keep your distance from other visitors who are not in your family group or bubble. You will be expected to keep your distance inside minibuses and other vehicles and when seated in restaurants.

At the time of writing, the State of Hawaii welcomes visitors but requires pre-travel testing for Covid-19. You can obtain the most up-to-date information directly from the State of Hawaii Portal .

Eco-Tourism and Sustainability in Maui

The Hawaiian Archipelago offers many areas of outstanding natural beauty and protected wildlife areas you can explore. In order to maintain this wonderful place for future generations, many of the local tour companies operate eco-friendly tours.

When considering the tours we review on the World Travel Guides website, note that there are often eco-friendly options that empower you to become a more sustainable traveler. This is especially true around the islands of Hawaii. Take care of our world and it will take care of our children.

Helicopter Tours in Maui

Maui is reputed to be the most beautiful island in the Hawaiian Archipelago. It is even nicknamed “The Valley Isle”. However, reaching many of the most iconic sites and taking in the most amazing views is often impossible by road and difficult on foot.

Those sites that can be reached by road often involve a long and treacherous journey. The scenic summit of Haleakala, for example, can be reached by road. However, the road involves steep drop-offs and blind turns, not to mention that you may encounter wildlife blocking the road.

The best way to see all that the island has to offer from the most advantageous viewpoint is to book a helicopter tour in Maui. Aboard a helicopter, you can view the picturesque waterfalls in hidden valleys without an 8-hour hike to get there. You can view the top of Haleakala from a unique vantagepoint within the same hour as you explore the sublime beauty of the coastal cliffs.

That isn’t to say that you can’t enjoy a wonderful hiking adventure or scenic bus tour in Maui. But if you don’t have a lot of time to explore the island, a helicopter excursion in Maui will enable you to see everything you couldn’t get to see on foot or on a bus tour.

Planning Tips

It’s always best to be prepared. Here are 5 tips to help you make the most of your stay on Maui.

Tip #1: If you want to see whales, go in winter

During the summer, humpback whales feed and congregate around Alaska. In winter, they migrate south to mate and calve. From mid-December to mid-April, there are an abundance of whale sightings in Maui.

Between 10 and 12 thousand whales congregate in these tropical waters. Whales are often visible at a distance from the beaches and will circle any small boats that approach their pods. Winter is the best time to whale watch in Maui.

Tip #2: Take your time to appreciate all that Maui has to offer

Perhaps you only want to see the whales or surf in the sunshine, but there’s a lot more to see and do in Maui.

Don’t miss the opportunity to climb a volcano, explore inside a lava tube, experience a traditional luau, and visit the historical royal town of Lahaina. See the information on Nightlife and Attractions below.

Tip #3: Book Maui tours in advance, especially during winter

Maui is a popular destination for tourists, so tours quickly sell out. Book in advance to avoid disappointment. You wouldn’t be able to forgive yourself if you went all that way only to miss your opportunity to whale watch because the tours were full.

Since many tours offer free refunds up to 24 hours before the activity begins, you’re not taking a risk if you book before you go. Just check the refund policy of each tour before you book.

Tip #4: Take summer clothes and raincoats

Because Maui is tropical, you need to pack summer clothes. However, don’t forget it also rains a lot on the island.

Light raincoats are an excellent idea. If you intend to see the sunrise or sunset from the top of Haleakalā, you will definitely need a jacket.

And if you plan to visit a plush Martini lounge or attend a luau, you should bring something a bit smarter for those special occasions.

Tip #5: Buy traditional local craft souvenirs

If you want to take home something unique, check out the Maui Crafts Guild in Paia, a small settlement a little east of Kahului just off the Hāna Highway.

This store is a member owned and operated cooperative where you will find the actual artists inside the store eager to speak to you about their arts and crafts.

Restaurants & Eating Out

Maui not only has a unique ecosystem with plants not found in the other 49 States, but it also boasts an uninterrupted cultural history.

That means during your stay you have the unique opportunity to taste genuine Polynesian food untainted by European colonial influences.

Because Maui is an island surrounded by abundant marine life, it’s no surprise many restaurants feature seafood on their menus. A popular dish is Opakapaka, which is crimson snapper either steamed, baked or grilled.

Monchong is a deep-water fish marinaded and grilled. Raw tuna is a favorite with the locals and is found in traditional foods like Poke.

Poke is like Japanese Sashimi but with the raw fish served in hearty chunks rather than thin slices.

Something unique to the Hawaiian Islands is luau food cooked in an earth oven called an imu. A tasty example of luau food is Laulau, made with pork, chicken, or fish.

The selected meat is wrapped in taro leaves and then cooked inside the imu for hours until it grows soft with a smoky taste. Delicious!

While many North Americans might consider either bread or potato to be their staple food during meals, on Maui taro is the staple root crop.

Taro is most often consumed as Poi, a thick paste that is either baked or steamed. Poi is slightly sour due to fermentation during its preparation.

And for dessert, why not try some Banana-Apple Fruit, Breadfruit, or Kulolo. Banana-Apple is a common fruit eaten cold or hot. Breadfruit is melon-sized and is served boiled, deep-fried, baked, or steamed.

Kulolo is steamed taro pudding. Yes! Taro is a versatile root.

Nightlife & Entertainment

Despite Maui’s small size, you will find a good selection of venues to let your hair down. The island offers something for everybody’s taste, from a plush Martini lounge to a rowdy beach watering hole where locals play pool and watch the big game live. But something truly special only experienced in the Hawaiian Islands is a Maui luau .

If you want to dress up and drink in style, you could head to the Ritz-Carlton in Kapalua and visit the Alaloa Lounge. They offer outdoor or indoor seating and live entertainment Thursday through Monday. The Kapalua Martini is a local specialty you should try.

At the other end of the scale is Life’s A Beach in Kihei, a beach lounge frequented by locals. As well as the football and pool tables you’d expect from a popular watering hole, they also have regular evening entertainment. They offer everything from open mic nights to live reggae bands.

But for a fun-packed evening of traditional songs, stories, food, and drink, you won’t do better than an organized traditional luau.

For around $130, you can experience Lei Greetings, observe the Imu Ceremony (cooking a pig in an earth oven), Hula Dance, and play Hawaiian games. The highlight is a performance by locals telling the story of how their ancestors first discovered and populated Maui, aided by the gods.

Getting Around

If you want to explore the Hāna Highway with the flexibility to stop wherever and whenever you choose, your best option is to rent a car.

However, if you don’t want to do this, you can get around by public transportation, shuttle bus, on a tour, or by taxi. Maui Bus, the public bus service, is an extremely efficient and cheap way of getting around the island.

But Maui Bus’ focus is on getting the locals where they need to go, which might not be what you want to see. A tour bus will take you exactly where you need to go, but on their schedule, not yours.

Taxis are an option for nearby attractions, but at $3 per mile, they are expensive for long journeys.

Accommodations

Most visitors to Maui stay near one of the larger settlements along the coast, but not Kahului, which is relatively industrial and less touristy than other towns.

Popular locations include Kā’anapali, Kapalua, Kihei, Lahaina, Mākena, and Kapalua. There are also hotels and resorts in the Up Country area around Kula.

When deciding where you want to stay, think about what you most want to see and do while you’re on the island.

Bear in mind that towns like Kā’anapali, Kapalua, and Lahaina on the leeward, west coast will be a lot drier and a little warmer than towns like Hāna on the windward, east coast.

Also remember that although the island is small and settlements close to one another, the roads meander, and there are mountains in the way. If you decide to stay in Hāna but intend to visit Lahaina, allow 3 hours each way for the drive.

When you’ve chosen your target location, you will find lots of resorts, hotels, hostels, and B&Bs to choose from. Tourism is big business in Maui, so there are rooms available to suit any budget.

Although Maui is a small island, you will experience several distinctly different climates while traveling around. This is a product of the island’s unique geography.

There are two important variables: elevation above sea level and position in relation to the two mountainous regions.

If you are on one of the whale tours in Maui, your boat will be at an elevation of 0 feet, but if you are admiring the view from atop Haleakalā, your elevation is 10,000 feet.

The higher you climb, the cooler the air temperature will be. As a rough guide, every 1,000 feet you rise above sea level, the temperature will drop 3.2 0 F.

This means that when the beach is 70 0 F, the summit is 38 0 F! Although Maui’s climate is tropical, snow sometimes appears at the summit.

If you decide to climb Haleakalā, make sure you take warm clothing in your backpack. You may begin your ascent in the tropics, but you’ll arrive to weather more like the Arctic.

Up Country Maui is wetter and cooler than neighboring South Maui because it sits at a higher elevation.

The low-lying central valley, where the airport is situated along with Kahului and Maalaea, is windy but dry and usually sunnier than other areas. The trade winds hit the windward, eastern shores of the island, bringing moist air.

As that air climbs the mountains, it releases the moisture as rain. This leads to a lot of rain on the east side of the island, hence the rainforests.

The leeward, western shores, because they are sheltered from the wind by the mountains, only get a remnant of the rain. This makes the western shores relatively dry, especially where sheltered by Haleakalā.

The average temperatures on Maui don’t change too much from the winter to the summer. Because the island is in the tropics, it’s almost always warm. In the coolest winter months, the average high is 80 0 F and the low 65 0 F, but around 1 0 F cooler along the Hāna Highway.

If you want to snorkel, the ocean temperature is a pleasant 75 0 F. Winter is the season that sees the most rainfall. In the warmest summer months, the average high is 84 0 F and the low 70 0 F but 83 0 F-69 0 F around Hāna. The ocean temperature rises to around 80 0 F in summer.

Attractions

Maui is an island steeped in natural beauty and cultural history. There are many interesting places to visit and activities to enjoy.

You can hike through the rainforest, snorkel in the crystal-clear water offshore, watch whales in the Pacific, or attend an authentic luau.

Maui is volcanic in origin, created by lava flows from two volcanoes. Haleakalā is the larger of the two volcanoes, responsible for over 75% of Maui’s landmass. You can find Haleakalā at the heart of Haleakalā National Park, which is a popular destination for tourists.  A great way to see this area is one an ATV tour , get to areas of the park that few visitors see!

If you enjoy photography, you’ll love the sunset over the Pacific Ocean viewed from the summit of Haleakalā. And once the sun has gone down, Haleakalā is also a fantastic place to stargaze, when it is not cloudy.

At 10,000 feet elevation and with no light pollution, you get an uninterrupted view of the cosmos. The main feature of the park is the volcano’s crater.

It is 7 miles long, 2 wide, and approximately 2,600 feet deep. Another popular attraction inside the park is Hosmer’s Grove.

This is an unusual collection of invasive trees from all around the world, including eucalyptus from Australia and pine from North America.

Visitors love to explore the Hāna Highway—Hawaii Routes 36 and 360. The highway winds along the North Shore between Kahului in Central Maui and Hāna in East Maui.

Built by King Pi’ilani in the 16 th century, this ancient road has a longer history than the Union. It is only 64½ miles long but features 59 bridges, most only one lane wide, and many sharp bends.

Driving along the highway, you will frequently stop to photograph the lush tropical rainforest. You can also visit waterfalls, walk along stunning black-sand beaches, and view scenic mountains.

However, if you decide to travel this route, expect delays. Even without stopping, the drive between the two towns takes 2½ hours.

Over in West Maui, the most popular destination for hikers is Iao Valley State Park. This is a stream-cut valley within the tropical rainforest, which features a distinctive natural landmark. Rising 1,200 feet from its base, the Iao Needle is a stunning basalt formation.

Not far away, on the north coast, you can find Nakalele Point. This scenic area of cliffs is famous for its blowhole, which spouts jets of seawater 100 feet into the air like a geyser.

Tourists fascinated by the cultural history of Maui flock to Lahaina, the largest settlement in West Maui. Once the residence of the royal family, Lahaina was the capital of the Kingdom of Hawaii from 1820 to 1845.

Here is where you’ll find the oldest buildings and learn about local history. Lahaina still projects the ambiance of a 19 th -century whaler’s seaport.

The settlement’s historic district boasts 9 important historical buildings built between 1823 and 1901. The 1859 Court House was constructed over the site of the royal palace, and the United States Marine Hospital dates to 1842.

Banyan Tree Park occupies the site of the 1831 Lahaina Fort and features the largest banyan tree in Hawaii planted in 1873.

How do I book!? and what’s the cost?

You’ll have to contact one of the helicopter companies and see their pricing. Pricing changes depending on the aircraft and the tour. Some fluctuate depending on season too. Keep in mind that most helicopter tours add on a large fuel surcharge towards the end of check out. It’s significant.

‘Still heartbreaking’: Maui helicopter pilot flies over burn zone nearly a year after Lahaina fire

HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) - The morning after the deadly wildfire in West Maui, much of the world had no idea how bad things really were.

As the sun came up on Aug. 9, 2023, the horror of it all came into focus.

The chaos of that day and the powerful force of nature that took so many lives and destroyed so many dreams, also knocked out communication with the outside world.

“I haven’t flown around Front Street or Lahaina itself since the fire,” said Richie Olsten, a long time helicopter pilot and Director of Operations at Air Maui Helicopter Tours.

The fire burned Lahaina on August 8th while Olsten was flying his normal tour to Molokai which doesn’t go by west Maui, but he saw the smoke.

Special Section: Maui Wildfire Disaster, One Year Later

”But we just figured it was the fields burning, the same thing that’s happened before with the fields,” added Olsten

The morning after the fire, with communication to west Maui cut off and very little information from public officials, this seasoned pilot wasn’t sure, like many of us, just how bad things were.

But he had a helicopter.

”I asked the owner of the company ‘hey, I’d like to fly out there and see if there’s any destruction’. He said yes,” Olsten recalled.

Pilot and crew set off from Kahului along Honoapiilani Highway and over Lahaina town. They were some of the first in the world to see how devastating the fire was.

”I get chicken skin, just talking about it right now, because it was just unbelievable. As we proceeded along the south and came up to Lahaina Harbor we saw that all the boats in the harbor, except a few of them, had burned,” he said.

“We could not believe what we were seeing. We were looking at each other in a helicopter saying, is this real? Is the town is gone?”

Olsten gets emotional as he recalls that day. He and his wife had close friends who died in the fire and others who lost their homes and everything they owned.

”You know, we were just heartbroken. We had tears in our eyes when we came back. After viewing that, we came back and landed and we were in disbelief. It was shocking,” said Olsten.

Air Maui Helicopter Tours flew in supplies for free after the fires to help those who had lost everything.

Now, a year later as the long-time Maui pilot flies above Lahaina, Olsten reflects on how much was lost, but also appreciates the progress that has been made.

”I am feeling relieved that the restoration has taken place, you know? But again the impact of it, all these homes of buildings being gone in the historic section — it is still you know heartbreaking and unimaginable.”
