Fuel Trip Calculator: Calculate Your Fuel Trip Costs Instantly Back to video
Our fuel trip calculator can help! Using fuel efficiency data from Natural Resources Canada, the calculator can estimate how much you’re spending on gas each day — or how much you’ll spend on gas for your next road trip.
Save Money on Fuel Trips with a Top-Rated Fuel Trip Calculator
New: compare new and past models with the driving vehicle comparison tool ..
If you’re looking to cut down how much you spend on gas, Natural Resources has tips for more fuel-efficient driving:
• Accelerate gently
• Drive at a steady speed (50-80km per hour is the most efficient range for many vehicles)
• Coast to decelerate
• Avoid idling
• Avoid carrying unnecessary weight
• Limit the use of air conditioning and other powered accessories
• Limit all-wheel and four-wheel drive
Data for the calculator comes from Natural Resources Canada, which publishes fuel efficiency figures for most makes and models of cars sold in Canada. The calculator assumes a combination of city and highway driving for determining fuel efficiency, so costs will be higher if you drive primarily in a city, where fuel efficiency tends to be lower.

Fuel Cost Calculator
This calculator can estimate fuel cost according to the distance of a trip, the fuel efficiency of the car, and the price of gas using various units.
Related Gas Mileage Calculator | Mileage Calculator
The price of gas may go up or down, but it's always a major expense for most drivers. The average American driver spends about $3,000 per year on gas, according to the American Automobile Association. Some of the practical ways to reduce fuel costs are listed below.
Use public transportation
Walking or biking does not consume fuel, and as such does not accumulate fuel cost. In most cases, public transport alternatives to cars such as buses, trains, and trolleys are viable options of reducing fuel costs. Due to the communal nature of ride sharing, the fuel costs of operating public transport are generally less than the fuel costs associated with each individual operating their own vehicle. In some places, public transport is free. Considering the costs associated with owning or renting a car creates even more incentive to use other modes of transportation.
Also known as car sharing, carpooling is the arrangement between two or more people to travel to a shared destination in a single vehicle. Although a heavier car consumes slightly more fuel, it is usually much more efficient than two people driving separate cars towards the same destination.
Use a more fuel efficient vehicle
Driving a smaller car makes a great difference – the fuel cost is about half for a small sedan than for a very large SUV. Similarly, drive with a less powerful engine than you need. Don't pay for an eight-cylinder engine when four cylinders work just fine. Unless you're hauling heavy loads on a routine basis, the extra cost of a bigger engine results in more money spent on gasoline.
Tune the engine
A properly tuned engine maximizes power and can greatly enhance fuel efficiency. But tuning the car engine is often done to increase horsepower – that's not the way to save on fuel. Make sure the tuner gets the message.
Fixing a car that is noticeably out of tune or has failed an emissions test can improve its gas mileage by an average of 4 percent – this amount will vary depending on the nature of the repair.
Fixing a serious maintenance problem, such as a faulty oxygen sensor, can improve your mileage by as much as 40 percent.
Placing ornaments and ground effects, aerodynamics kits, and airfoils, such as deck-lid spoilers, may make you feel good, but they also increase the car's drag and make it require more fuel. Such accessories offer no real handling enhancements, although they may look nice on your car. Also, place signs or cargo on the roof so that the object angles forward. This will reduce the frontal area of the object, and it will cause less drag, and cause you to use less fuel.
Adjust tires
Make sure the tires are inflated to the right levels. Properly inflated tires can reduce fuel consumption by up to 3 percent. Your tires also lose about 1 PSI per month, and when the tires are cold (e.g., in the winter), their pressure will decrease due to the thermal contraction of the air. It is recommended to check tires at least monthly, preferably weekly. Having properly inflated tires will also help you avoid uneven wear on the tread.
Gas stations don't always have accurate equipment for this purpose. Sometimes gas stations use automatic air compressors that stop at a pre-determined level. To make sure you inflate to the right level, double-check pressure with your own gauge.
Recommended inflation pressures are for cold tires; put about 3 PSI more in if the tires have been driven on a while. Inflate to the pressure recommended by the car manufacturer, not to the level stamped on the tire.
Use the correct motor oil
Gas mileage will improve by 1 percent to 2 percent if you use the manufacturer's recommended grade of motor oil. For example, using 10W-30 motor oil in an engine designed to use 5W-30 can reduce your gas mileage by a considerable amount. Using 5W-30 in an engine designed for 5W-20 can lower your gas mileage by 1 percent to 2 percent. Also, look for motor oil that says "Energy Conserving" on the API performance symbol to be sure it contains friction-reducing additives.
Plan trips carefully
There is no more obvious way to save gas than to drive a shorter distance.
Plan your route carefully. With today's GPS route planners, it's easy to calculate a straight route with the fewest stops and diversions. It is also possible to judge which route will have the least traffic. Take highways instead of local routes or city streets when possible – the steady speed maximizes fuel efficiency.
When driving in a city, try to park in a central location, and then walk from one appointment to another, or take public transportation. Ragged stop-and-go city driving is terrible for your gas mileage. This also saves the high level of gas used in parking and pulling out in a parking lot.
Factors that determine the fuel price
Government intervention.
Governments may intervene in gasoline (referred to as petrol in some parts of the world) markets by taxation, which may raise prices for consumers within or outside the governmental territory. Similarly, certain industries may receive financial support from the government to promote commercial enterprise (a subsidy). Generally, subsidized products or services can be sold at lower prices.
Financial markets
The global oil price fluctuates constantly. The key crudes quoted are Brent and West Texas Intermediate (WTI) in the unit of US$ per barrel. The retail fuel price is closely related to the global oil price fluctuation.
Political elements such as structure, regime, personnel, and events can all affect the cost of fuel. For instance, a change in leadership from a leader who doesn't believe in climate change to one who does may result in changes to the cost of fuel for consumers based on different policies, such as choosing not to subsidize fuel. Political relationships between countries are also a factor; nations can go to war over resources, or form alliances in order to trade, both of which can affect the cost of fuel.
Geographic area
Certain geographical areas or countries in the world have an abundance of oil, while others do not have a single drop. Regional consumers within close proximity of high supplies of oil are more likely to have lower costs of fuel due to ease of access. Areas without their own supply of oil that are isolated from the rest of the world (such as islands in the Pacific) can find fuel to be relatively expensive.
Natural disaster or weather
Earthquakes, tsunamis, hurricanes, major floods, and other such nature-related phenomena can affect the production, manufacturing, and logistics of gasoline, which can possibly affect the price of fuel. For instance, a snowstorm may close certain roads, disallowing the transportation of the resource and driving up fuel costs in these areas. Hurricanes or earthquakes can damage oil refineries, abruptly halting production, which can also eventually increase fuel costs.

Fuel Cost Calculator FAQs
A Fuel Cost Calculator is a tool that helps you estimate the amount of money you'll spend on fuel for your car. It considers factors like the distance you plan to travel, your car's fuel efficiency (mileage) , and the current petrol/gas or diesel price.
Using V3Cars fuel cost calculator is simple! Just enter the distance you'll be traveling (daily, monthly or yearly), and your car's mileage. On the basis of the local fuel price in your city, the calculator will then estimate the daily/monthly/yearly fuel cost. Remember, our calculator also allows you to input the specific fuel price (petrol or diesel) in your area for a more accurate estimate.
While you can't predict the future price of fuel, a fuel cost calculator can give you an estimate based on current prices and your planned travel distance. This tool can also help you budget for upcoming trips.
The basic formula for calculating fuel cost is: Distance (Kilometre) / Mileage (Kilometre) x Fuel Price ( /Kilometre) = Fuel Cost ( ). This formula assumes you know the distance you'll travel, your car's mileage, and the current fuel price. V3Cars fuel cost calculator automates this calculation for you.
To calculate the fuel cost for a trip, you'll need to know the distance you'll be traveling and your car's mileage. Enter this information in the Driving Distance field of the fuel cost calculator, and it will estimate your trip fuel cost.
A fuel cost calculator provides an estimate. Your actual fuel cost may vary slightly depending on factors like driving conditions (city vs highway), traffic congestion, and your car's individual performance.
V3Cars fuel cost calculator allows you to estimate your daily, monthly, and yearly fuel costs based on your average daily/monthly/yearly driving distance and car's mileage. This can help you understand your recurring fuel expenses in Canada.
Fuel efficiency (mileage) refers to how far your car can travel on a single Kilometre of fuel. It's usually measured in Kilometre. Cars with higher mileage are generally more fuel-efficient, meaning they spend less on fuel per Kilometre traveled. Therefore, improving your car's mileage can significantly reduce your fuel costs.
- Maintaining proper tire pressure
- Avoiding unnecessary or aggressive acceleration and braking
- Removing excess weight from your car
- Keeping your car well-maintained by on-time service
- Driving distance: The distance you plan to travel (in kilometers/miles)
- Your car's fuel efficiency (mileage in kmpl/mpg/kmpg)
- Fuel price in your city. You can also enter the current fuel price in your area for a more precise estimate.
These are simple formula based calculations, based on user inputs. The accuracy of the fuel cost estimate depends on the accuracy level of the given information.
We try our best to keep the fuel prices updated daily. However, actual fuel prices may vary depending on your location and specific fuel station.

Gasoline prices are at a historic high in Canada and unless you're driving an electric car you are sure to be feeling the pinch. The average price for gas is now over $2 a litre and Canadians spend around 4.4% of their annual income just on filling up their cars. This is even more than Americans who, thanks to subsidies only spend around 3%.
So if you don't have an electric car and aren't about to buy one how can you save money? Our gas consumption calculator can help you estimate how much it costs to travel and at least can help you take control of your budget and plan in advance for the cost of driving.
How can I calculate my gas consumption?
Our calculation tool can help you estimate the amount of money you are spending on gas. Simply input the following information:
- The distance you will travel, or have travelled

• Accelerate gently • Drive at a steady speed (50-80km per hour is the most efficient range for many vehicles) • Coast to decelerate • Avoid idling • Avoid carrying unnecessary weight • Limit the use of air conditioning and other powered accessories • Limit all-wheel and four-wheel drive

Simple online USD to CAD gas price calculator
Ever wondered what is the Canadian Dollar price of the gas or diesel you put into your car at US gas station? Do you want to know how Canadian gas prices compare to those across the US border? Here's the simple gas savings calculator to help you with that.
Use the form below to quickly convert USD per gallon to CAD per litre. Know your savings!
Today's exchange rate is: USD $1 = CAD $1.38
Please note:
On average, gas is always cheaper in the U.S. You can use this as a rule of thumb when making a decision about what side of the border you should fill up the tank on. Depending on the size of your fuel tank, the money you save could easily cover the cost of a short shopping trip across the border (if you live nearby) or even treat you to a free lunch!
Why is gas more expensive in Canada than the U.S.?
The short answer is - taxes. Even though the gasoline taxes vary by state and province, the average nation wide tax is much higher in Canada. The moment you remove the taxes from the equation, the prices become comparable.

Ready for a Canada Road Trip?
![gas price trip calculator canada](https://blog-content.gasbuddy.com/uploads/2017/06/GB-Mark-Color-RGB-400x400.png)
Justin Mastine-Frost, a well-respectedtravel journalist based in Vancouver, recently put together a list of his top 9road trips to take in CanadaÂ… With the end of summer almost upon us, we thinkyouÂ’ll find the perfect reason to pack and go!
Here is his comprehensive East-to-West guide to the great Canadian road trips. Now, intheory, you could daisy-chain each of these segments together and turn it intoan all-encompassing “see all of Canada in one fell swoop” mega-adventure, butwe wouldn’t hold it against you if you just stuck with the more manageablejunkets…
Of course, youÂ’ll want to be smart and saveon gas. Start your travel plans here: Trip Cost Calculator
(For your convenience, we’ve included the current average price of gas in each destination below!)
·Cabot Trail(Cape Breton Island, ( Nova Scotia 133.9)
If youÂ’relooking to see some of the Canadian East CoastÂ’s most picturesque scenery andpossibly enjoy some great seafood along the way, Nova Scotia’s Cabot Trail hasgot you covered. The Cabot Trail completes a seaside loop of Cape BretonIsland, passing through many small communities along the way.
For those looking for a more rustic experience there are campgrounds scatteredthrough the Cape Breton Highlands National Park, or for a particularly uniqueexperience pop in to the Glenora Inn and Distillery, which is the home of Canada’s only single malt whiskey.
CanadianPraries ( Manitoba 126.6 )
As mundane as parts of the journey can be,there is something to be said for experiencing the prairies first-hand at leastonce in your lifetime. Farming communities, countless grain silos, and amazingsunsets dot the way as you cross from eastern Manitoba through to the foothillsof the Rocky Mountains that start just outside of Calgary.
If thereÂ’s one gem to drop in on, itÂ’s the Tunnels of Moose Jaw in Saskatchewanwhere you’ll be given an interesting lesson on our history during theprohibition years, and the city’s ties to Chicago and the notorious Al Capone.
Cowboy Trail ( Alberta, 119.8 )
It wouldnÂ’t be a stop in Alberta if we didn’t drive through the country somewhere along the way. The Cowboy Trail runsnorth from south of Lethbridge to the outskirts of Edmonton, avoiding major highways and passing through some breathtaking ranch country along the way.
The route is quite remote, but it offers an interesting glimpse into theCanadian history of the Wild West. Stop for a horseback riding excursion inWaterton Glacier National Park, or for a real step back in time, check out Marv’s Classic Soda Shop and Diner in the town of Black Diamond.
Calgary ToJasper ( Alberta, 119.8)
There’s no way that a list of greatCanadian road trips could be compiled without a section dedicated the RockyMountains. Any one born and raised east of Alberta will remember that first encounter with the majestic mountain range, and even for those more familiarwith the area they are still a sight worth seeing.
This route pushes you through the heart of the Rockies in Banff National Parkand through to Jasper, the home of some incredible glaciers and the newlyopened Glacier Skywalk. The Skywalk opened at the beginning of May and allowsvisitors to walk 30 metres out over the cliff side to a glass-bottomed lookoutsuspended 280 metres above the Sunwapta River.
Vernon ToOsoyoos ( British Columbia, 136.2)
For those less concerned with nature and history, the Okanagan Valley is the perfect destination for some good R&Rand of course, some of the best wine in the country. Hundreds of wineries are scattered throughout the valley, and each town and sub-region has enough goingon to tie you up for at least a day.
Word to the wise, donÂ’t start buying wine at the first winery if you plan oncovering the whole region, as youÂ’ll be destined to run out of trunk space before you run out of road.
Percé ToMontreal ( Quebec, 136.1 )
This one thousand kilometer road tripstarts at the southeastern tip of Quebec, and the home one of the provinceÂ’smost unique geological landmarks: PercĂ© Rock. From there, the highway rolls northward and tracks its way down the mouth of the Saint Laurence River, following in the footsteps of our country’s early settlers.
A day or two in Quebec City will provide ample time for another Canadianhistory lesson before moving on to Montreal for a proper dose of modernQuebecois culture. If you plan your trip for the first weekend of July you’llbe able to catch both Montreal and Quebec City in festival mode, as both theMontreal International Jazz Festival and the Festival D’été du Québec are on atthat time.
Toronto ToNiagara Falls ( Ontario 129.2)
Out of this list, this trip is far moreabout the many pit stops than it is about the road itself. Aside from the enddestination at whatÂ’s likely one of CanadaÂ’s most recognizable landmarks, theinteresting detour here is all about OntarioÂ’s blossoming wine country.
The region has received some serious recognition in recent years and even a fewof the big BC wineries have set up shop in the region. If a break from theurban grind is on the agenda there are over 22 Bed and Breakfasts to choosefrom in St-Catharines, which keeps you right in the heart of OntarioÂ’s winecountry.
SunshineCoast ( British Columbia, 136.2 )
Even with the now-ridiculous costsassociated with ferry travel in British Columbia, the Sunshine Coast still has plenty to offer travellers of all sorts. Adventure seekers will love the manylocal diving sites, kayak rentals and other excursions on hand, and those looking for a slower pace can hop from town to town and explore the regionÂ’sdiverse artistic community. If youÂ’re looking to really unwind, The RockwaterResort and Spa is half way up the coast and is the perfect place to relax aftera day of exploring.
VancouverIsland ( Vancouver, BC 139.8 )
From its southern tip to its westernshores, Vancouver Island is another excellent destination for a proper dose of west coast Canadiana. The province’s capital of Victoria is worth a visit ifyou’re feeling “touristy, but the trek out to Tofino is one that cannot be missed.
ThereÂ’s something quite special about driving through hours of lush rainforest before breaking through to the coastline. If you wander off and start daydreaming it doesn’t take long to feel like youÂ’re walking through a scene from Jurassic Park. Once in Tofino, you are in BCÂ’s surf paradise, and ofcourse the famed Wickaninnish Inn and the new Way Point Resort are nearby to take care of your premium dining and accommodation needs.

How Canada’s pollution pricing system works
From: Environment and Climate Change Canada
Backgrounder
Every day, we see the increasing impacts of climate change, and they’re costing Canadians more and more. Climate-related impacts are already costing average Canadian households $720 per year and are likely to rise to $2,000 per year by 2050 without significant action to reduce emissions.
A price on pollution is widely recognized as the most efficient means to reduce the greenhouse gas emissions that are contributing to the more intense wildfires, droughts, and floods caused by climate change. Canada’s approach to pollution pricing is also designed to put money back into people’s pockets.
Putting a price on pollution is a cornerstone of Canada’s plan to tackle climate change.
In provinces where the federal carbon pricing system applies, the Government of Canada returns the majority of proceeds from the federal pollution pricing system to families through the quarterly Canada Carbon Rebate for individuals. The remaining portion of proceeds will be returned through federal programming to groups that may be disproportionately impacted by climate change. This includes returning proceeds to farmers, to Indigenous governments through jointly developed mechanisms, and to small- and medium-sized businesses.
The federal carbon pollution pricing system is not about raising money for the Government. All direct proceeds collected are returned to the province or territory in which they were collected. Furthermore, the system was designed to return the money in advance before Canadians incur extra costs at the pumps or on their home heating bills.
Quarterly Canada Carbon Rebate for individuals
Households in Alberta, Saskatchewan, Manitoba, Ontario, New Brunswick, Nova Scotia, Prince Edward Island, and Newfoundland and Labrador receive four payments under the Canada Carbon Rebate each year by direct deposit or cheque. This helps keep life affordable for individuals and families while fighting climate change. Through these quarterly payments, eight out of 10 households receive more money back than they pay.
As Canadians continue to take action to reduce emissions—by improving their home insulation, using transit, purchasing an electric vehicle, or installing a heat pump—they will cut costs and save money.
Independent analysis by Clean Energy Canada has shown that a Canadian family that adopts clean-energy solutions, including electric vehicles and heat pumps, could reduce their monthly energy bills by $800, compared to a household that is largely reliant on fossil fuels.
Canada’s approach to carbon pricing does not increase the cost of living. In fact, the federal government is focused on addressing the cost-of-living crisis and is delivering the Canada Carbon Rebate to make life affordable for Canadians and support families. The Canada Carbon Rebate, distributed via direct bank deposit or cheque, outweighs the costs from pollution pricing for the vast majority of families in provinces where the federal fuel charge applies.
For 2024–2025, a family of four will receive the following in base Canada Carbon Rebate amounts:
Rural supplement
In addition to the base Canada Carbon Rebate amount, a rural supplement is provided to residents of small and rural communities. To further recognize rural Canadians’ higher energy needs and more limited access to cleaner transportation options, the government has doubled the rural supplement available for households in rural areas and smaller communities from 10 percent to 20 percent of their base Canada Carbon Rebate amount. Canadians will start to see this doubled rural supplement with their Canada Carbon Rebate payment on October 15. The supplemental increase will be retroactive to April 1, 2024, so those households can expect a one-time double payment in October 2024 for the retroactive amounts from April and July. Additionally, the boost from 10 percent to 20 percent will be ongoing from October 1, 2024, onward.
- Canada Carbon Rebate for Small Businesses
Canada’s small- and medium-sized businesses are the backbone of the Canadian economy and the heart of our communities. Across the country, they keep main streets flourishing, create good jobs, and deliver on the dream of entrepreneurship. Through the new Canada Carbon Rebate for Small Businesses, the Government of Canada is delivering on its commitment to return proceeds from the price on pollution directly to small- and medium-sized businesses in the provinces where the federal fuel charge applies.
This accelerated and automated return process will deliver over $2.5 billion directly to an estimated 600,000 small- and medium-sized businesses through a refundable tax credit. By receiving direct payments, this simple process for accessing fuel charge proceeds will help eligible small- and medium-sized businesses to focus on what matters most—driving their businesses forward. To be eligible for the retroactive payment with respect to the 2019–2020 to 2023–2024 fuel charge years (a fuel charge year runs from April 1 to March 31), a Canadian-controlled private corporation (CCPC) must:
- Have employed one or more persons in a designated province in the calendar year in which the fuel charge year begins
- Have had 499 or fewer employees throughout Canada in that calendar year
- File a tax return for its tax year ending in 2023 no later than July 15, 2024
Canadian-controlled private corporations do not have to apply for this rebate. Once the Minister of Finance has specified the payment rates for each designated province for an applicable calendar year, we will calculate and automatically issue the rebate amounts to eligible small businesses.
The rebate amount for an applicable calendar year between 2019 and 2023, inclusively, will be calculated for each designated province in which the eligible Canadian-controlled private corporation had employees in that calendar year.
This rebate amount will be equal to the number of persons employed by the eligible Canadian-controlled private corporation in a designated province in a calendar year, multiplied by a payment rate specified by the Minister of Finance for the designated province for the corresponding calendar year.
More details on rebate amounts and distribution dates for the rebate will be provided in the coming months.
Support for Indigenous communities
In 2020, the Government of Canada committed to return 1 percent of federal fuel charge proceeds to Indigenous governments. In 2024, proceeds allocated for return to Indigenous governments doubled to 2 percent in recognition of the impacts of climate change on Indigenous communities. This will support Indigenous governments to respond to a changing climate and advance self-determined priorities.
Environment and Climate Change Canada is continuing to engage with Indigenous partners, including First Nations, Inuit, and Métis governments, to advance jointly developed solutions to return the share of proceeds collected from 2020–2021 to 2024–2025 , as soon as possible.
Pollution pricing in the agriculture sector
Farmers are on the frontlines of climate change, facing ever-increasing risks of floods, droughts, and storms to their operations. Canada’s approach to pollution pricing was designed to take into account the unique needs of farmers. Farmers do not pay the fuel charge for gasoline and light fuel oil (diesel) used in eligible farming machinery on farms. Similarly, biological emissions are not priced under the federal system, such that roughly 97 percent of on-farm emissions are not subject to the price on pollution.
Greenhouse operators also receive upfront relief of 80 percent of the fuel charge on propane and marketable natural gas used to heat an eligible greenhouse or to supplement carbon dioxide in eligible greenhouses in order to grow or produce plants.
Additionally, farm businesses that operate in provinces where the federal fuel charge is in place can generally receive a refundable tax credit, the purpose of which is to return total fuel charge proceeds related to farm use of natural gas and propane in heating and drying activities in those provinces, to help farmers transition to lower-carbon ways of farming.
As part of the Strengthened Climate Plan and the 2030 Emissions Reduction Plan, the Government of Canada committed over $1.5 billion to accelerate the agricultural sector's progress on reducing emissions, while remaining a global leader in sustainable agriculture. This includes $470.7 million for the Agricultural Clean Technology (ACT) Program to create an enabling environment for the development and adoption of clean technology that will help drive the changes required to achieve a low-carbon economy and promote sustainable growth in Canada's agriculture and agri-food sector.
