What to expect

The library is expected to become a cultural hub where events like book launches, talks by authors, training programs for writers and more will be hosted. Those who want to attend will be able to book these events on the app.

Libraries worldwide are notorious for being strict about silence and discipline. However, the MBRL will be more relaxed, according to a spokesperson.

"We are not going to strictly enforce a silent area," said Jamal Al Shehhi, board member of the MBRL. "The ground floor has a café and will have events. So the area will always be lively. As you go to the higher floors, it will get quieter."

During the Emirates Literature Festival, boat service will be available from Dubai Festival City area to the MBRL. A 500-seater theatre within the premises will also hold movie nights in the future.

The first three months will see the MBRL having restricted access to residents and visitors who will have to register on the app to visit the library.

"We want to have a soft launch and ensure everything works smoothly," said Jamal Al Shehhi. "The library will operate at full capacity only after the summer months."

Dubai has a new architectural marvel on its horizon and this time it's in the shape of a bookstand.

Mohammed bin Rashid Library , which opens to the public on Thursday, spans more than 54,000 square metres, with seven floors and nine thematic libraries.

The Dh1 billion venue, which took six years to build, was officially inaugurated by Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid , Vice President and Ruler of Dubai, on Monday, and aims to be a cultural centre, joining Sharjah’s House of Wisdom in paving the way for libraries of the future.

Four must-see things at Dubai's new Mohammed bin Rashid Library

First look at the Mohammed Bin Rashed Library in Al Jaddaf, Dubai. Chris Whiteoak / The National

Here's everything you need to know about visiting the UAE's newest cultural landmark.

Where is the library located?

It's in Al Jaddaf, by the Dubai Creek, offering spectacular views of the waterway.

Do I need a ticket to enter or is there an entry fee?

As with most conventional libraries, there is no need to buy a ticket to enter. There is no entry fee required.

However, it is recommended to download the library app and reserve your time slots online.

Are children allowed in?

Children under 5 are not allowed to enter, but those aged 5 and over are welcome and there is even a dedicated library only for them, with an indoor slide.

This includes a generously sized section dedicated to blind children with books published in braille. A sensory pod is also available to accommodate those with autism.

Can I buy a membership?

Yes, there will be a paid membership scheme in place that allows UAE residents to borrow books for varying lengths of time.

Details and prices for this have not yet been announced, but will be available on the website soon.

What are the library's opening hours?

The library will be open Monday to Saturday from 9am to 9pm and is closed on Sundays.

Is there free parking?

Yes, there is a nine-storey underground parking area with free car parking, including spots for electric vehicles.

Can I get there by public transport?

Al Jaddaf Metro station is the nearest and a shaded walking path is being built to allow direct access to the library.

You can also go via Dubai Bus route C04, which stops at the Creek Metro Station.

What's inside the library?

There are nine thematic libraries within the space. Library content becomes increasingly specialised as you go up the seven levels, while the ground floor is home to three libraries filled with the most accessible content.

There is a General Library, an Emirates Library, one for children and another for young adults, others focusing on business titles, periodicals, maps and atlases, and another that centres on media and the arts, which is home to expansive collections of Arabic newspapers and magazines spanning the mid-20th century.

There's also a private collections library, but visitors need special permission to access this area.

This is in addition to an indoor and outdoor amphitheatre, a literary museum, a conference centre, a two-storey cafe and a gift shop.

And, that’s only the opening phase: on the horizon are electronic gaming lounges, a monthly programme of author events and a ferry service from Dubai Festival City to the venue for select sessions of the Emirates Airline Festival of Literature .

What is the Treasures of the Library exhibition?

The Treasures of the Library section is on the seventh floor. It is a museum with hundreds of encased works; the collection has rare books, manuscripts and documents dating back to the 13th century. These include old copies of the Quran and a first edition of Miguel de Cervantes's 17th-century epic novel Don Quixote .

Also on hand is a first edition of Description de L'Egypte , a series of publications, appearing first in 1809, cataloguing various aspects of ancient and modern Egypt, written by scholars and academics who accompanied Napoleon Bonaparte on his expedition to the country in 1798.

“Collecting these works took two years,” board director Jamal Al Shehhi told The National during a preview of the library. “We had teams going around the world searching for them and even acquiring them at charity auctions. We were determined to get the best titles that we can find.”

How many books are there?

According to Al Shehhi, there are more than one million physical and digital titles spanning 30 languages, and the library continues to build its catalogue.

The general library boasts more than 100,000 titles and is the place to seek popular novels and non-fiction titles.

The children’s library has about 17,000 titles and the Emirates Library, located on the sixth floor, contains more than 37,000 books written about the UAE in many languages and genres.

How do I find books?

All the books are organised numerically, rather than alphabetically and in genre, but it is recommended to search online for the availability of your preferred book in order to know exactly where to find it.

“We operate by name of the titles as opposed to language,” Al Shehhi said. “When we acquire books, we not only get multiple copies but also in as many languages as we can.”

Books are delivered to various points around the library via monorail.

Can I work from the library?

There are dozens of couches, reading desks and workstations.

For those who need a little more peace and quiet, the second floor has plenty of spacious study rooms. These are free of charge to those who book online.

A smart scanner even allows students to scan portions of books or resources and email it to themselves.

Is there anything else there?

Outside, there is the Garden of Quotes, featuring pillars with more than 60 of Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid’s quotes written in a variety of languages from Arabic and English to Bosnian, Korean, Urdu and even Amharic.

What else has the library got planned?

Beginning next month, Library Talks is a series of monthly events featuring bestselling authors from the region and beyond discussing their works.

The book-shaped Mohammed bin Rashid Library (MBRL) on the Dubai Creek bank was inaugurated by the UAE Vice-President on Monday evening. The stunning Dh1-billion cultural destination will, however, open to the public on Thursday, June 16.

According to Jamal Al Shehhi, board member of the MBRL, entry to the library is free, but visitors must download the MBRL app and register for a slot to visit. The library is open from 9am to 9pm, but will remain closed on Sunday.

“Those interested will be able to register for yearly memberships soon,” said Al Shehhi as he hosted journalists for a media tour of the venue.

The seven-storey building has over a million books and six million research theses.

In addition to books, the attraction has around 73,000 music scores; 75,000 videos; 13,000 articles, and more than 5,000 historical print and digital journals within an archive covering 325 years. It also features about 35,000 print and digital newspapers from around the world, and nearly 500 rare collectibles.

Library for Model Based RL

facebookresearch/mbrl-lib

Folders and files, repository files navigation.

PyPi Version

mbrl is a toolbox for facilitating development of Model-Based Reinforcement Learning algorithms. It provides easily interchangeable modeling and planning components, and a set of utility functions that allow writing model-based RL algorithms with only a few lines of code.

See also our companion paper .

Getting Started

Installation, standard installation.

mbrl requires Python 3.8+ library and PyTorch (>= 1.7) . To install the latest stable version, run

Developer installation

If you are interested in modifying the library, clone the repository and set up a development environment as follows

And test it by running the following from the root folder of the repository

Basic example

As a starting point, check out our tutorial notebook on how to write the PETS algorithm ( Chua et al., NeurIPS 2018 ) using our toolbox, and running it on a continuous version of the cartpole environment.

Provided algorithm implementations

MBRL-Lib provides implementations of popular MBRL algorithms as examples of how to use this library. You can find them in the mbrl/algorithms folder. Currently, we have implemented PETS , MBPO , PlaNet , we plan to keep increasing this list in the future.

The implementations rely on Hydra to handle configuration. You can see the configuration files in this folder. The overrides subfolder contains environment specific configurations for each environment, overriding the default configurations with the best hyperparameter values we have found so far for each combination of algorithm and environment. You can run training by passing the desired override option via command line. For example, to run MBPO on the Gymnasium version of HalfCheetah, you should call

By default, all algorithms will save results in a csv file called results.csv , inside a folder whose path looks like ./exp/mbpo/default/gym___HalfCheetah-v2/yyyy.mm.dd/hhmmss ; you can change the root directory ( ./exp ) by passing root_dir=path-to-your-dir , and the experiment sub-folder ( default ) by passing experiment=your-name . The logger will also save a file called model_train.csv with training information for the dynamics model.

Beyond the override defaults, You can also change other configuration options, such as the type of dynamics model (e.g., dynamics_model=basic_ensemble ), or the number of models in the ensemble (e.g., dynamics_model.model.ensemble_size=some-number ). To learn more about all the available options, take a look at the provided configuration files .

Supported environments

Our example configurations are largely based on Mujoco , but our library components (and algorithms) are compatible with any environment that follows the standard Gymnasium syntax. You can try our utilities in other environments by creating your own entry script and Hydra configuration, using our default entry main.py as guiding template. See also the example override configurations.

Without any modifications, our provided main.py can be used to launch experiments with the following environments:

  • pybullet-gym (thanks to dtch1997 ) for the contribution! Note: You must run pip install gym==0.26.3 to use the dm_control and pybulletgym environments.

You can test your Mujoco and PyBullet installations by running

To specify the environment to use for main.py , there are two possibilities:

  • Preferred way : Use a Hydra dictionary to specify arguments for your env constructor. See example .
  • mujoco-gym : "gym___<env-name>" , where env-name is the name of the environment in Gymnasium (e.g., "HalfCheetah-v2").
  • dm_control : "dmcontrol___<domain>--<task> , where domain/task are defined as in DMControl (e.g., "cheetah--run").
  • pybullet-gym : "pybulletgym___<env-name>" , where env-name is the name of the environment in pybullet gym (e.g., "HopperPyBulletEnv-v0")

Visualization and diagnostics tools

Our library also contains a set of diagnostics tools, meant to facilitate development and debugging of models and controllers. With the exception of the CPU-controller, which also supports PyBullet, these currently require a Mujoco installation, but we are planning to add support for other environments and extensions in the future. Currently, the following tools are provided:

FineTuner : Can be used to train a model on a dataset produced by a given agent/controller. The model and agent can be loaded from separate directories, and the fine tuner will roll the environment for some number of steps using actions obtained from the controller. The final model and dataset will then be saved under directory "model_dir/diagnostics/subdir", where subdir is provided by the user.

TrainingBrowser : This script launches a lightweight training browser for plotting rewards obtained after training runs (as long as the runs use our logger). The browser allows aggregating multiple runs and displaying mean/std, and also lets the user save the image to hard drive. The legend and axes labels can be edited in the pane at the bottom left. Requires installing PyQt5 . Thanks to a3ahmad for the contribution!

Note that, except for the training browser, all the tools above require Mujoco installation and are specific to models of type OneDimTransitionRewardModel . We are planning to extend this in the future; if you have useful suggestions don't hesitate to raise an issue or submit a pull request!

Advanced Examples

MBRL-Lib can be used for many different research projects in the subject area. Below are some community-contributed examples:

Mohammed Bin Rashid Library Celebrates First Anniversary on June 17

13 Jun, 2023

plan your visit mbrl

Driven by its vision to promote cultural awareness and stimulate passion for knowledge among future generations, Mohammed Bin Rashid Library (MBRL) will organise a series of cultural, community, and entertainment activities, competitions, and workshops for all age groups, to celebrate its first anniversary on Saturday, June 17. The event will be held under the slogan ‘A Year of Culture in a Whole World’.

“When we first established the Mohammed Bin Rashid Library, we followed the inspiring words of His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai: ‘We want the library to be a house of wisdom, where researchers gather, youth innovate, and knowledge get drafted. We don’t want the library to be a place for books, we want it a place to attract youth and enhance their cultural and knowledge soul’,” said HE Mohammad Ahmad Al Murr, Chairman of Mohammed Bin Rashid Al Maktoum Library Foundation.

“Today, as we celebrate our first anniversary, and based on this vision, we are proud of our achievements and their constructive role in promoting cultural awareness and knowledge. We aspire to make MBRL a leading cultural hub and a unique model for the next generation of libraries. We aim to continue our journey towards the development of MBRL as a leading cultural centre by expanding our services as well as cultural and strategic partnerships. We also look forward to offering more educational and cultural opportunities by organising cultural events, workshops, and lectures that inspire readers and enhance their intellectual capabilities,” added Al Murr.

“With the completion of one year of achievements and success, Mohammed Bin Rashid Library has contributed to supporting and promoting the cultural scene, transforming from a mere library into a thriving cultural center full of knowledge and creative interaction. This is due to the efforts of a passionate and dedicated team of Emirati employees who worked tirelessly to achieve our vision of empowering society and providing knowledge opportunities to all,” said Dr. Mohammed Salem Obaid Al Mazrooei, Board Member at Mohammed Bin Rashid Library.

“Mohammed bin Rashid Library will celebrate its first anniversary through a series of activities that combine art, entertainment, learning, and knowledge to embody the spirit of innovation and provide an unprecedented experience for its visitors. The celebration will also be a unique opportunity for discovering and developing talents. We are committed to organising events throughout the year to support our mission to stimulate passion for knowledge, and build a lighthouse of knowledge, culture, and creativity,” added Al Mazrooei.

Numbers and Statistics

In the span of a year, MBRL made several accomplishments that contributed to promoting cultural awareness and supporting knowledge-sharing, including the addition of nearly  120,000 books. MBRL welcomed over half a million visitors of different ages and nationalities to experience its facilities, services, and specialized sub-libraries.

The total number of print and e-book titles reached over 1 million, while the number of titles and videos in the database reached more than 21 million titles. In addition, the number of books requested from the website and application were more than 4,400 books, and more than 620,000 e-books, along with 6 global databases.

The library organized nearly 200 educational, cultural, and training activities and workshops for adults, children, and families, in many fields and disciplines, including the monthly events ‘Library Days’ and ‘Coffee & Book. These events contribute to achieving its vision to build a lighthouse of knowledge, culture, and creativity.

More so, the library received more than 250 high-level delegations, headed by senior officials from the UAE and abroad, including delegations from Kuwait, Oman, Egypt, the Embassy of the Republic of Malta, and the consulates of Canada, China, and Malaysia. MBRL also welcomed Sultan Sharaf Al Din Idris Shah and his wife, and the wives of a number of ambassadors in the UAE, in addition to the Director of the Spanish El Escorial Library, the Bibliotheca Alexandrina, the Arab Fund for Arts and Culture (AFAC), the New York Public Library, the Science Museum in London, among others. The library also received multiple school and university delegations to tour the library and enjoy a unique and enriching experience through its intellectual treasures.

As part of its efforts to expand and enhance joint cooperation with public and private entities, the Mohammed Bin Rashid Al Maktoum Library Foundation signed several partnerships, strategies and agreements, including the ‘Etisalat by e&’ group, MBRL’s Golden Partner, and Zayed University. The library also seeks to enhance future cooperation opportunities with local and international organisations.

More than 100,000 books were donated to the library by publishing houses, writers, authors, and official delegations and consulates from the UAE and abroad. The books ranged between literature, social sciences, culture, translations, and many other fields, in addition to more than 2,200 rare and valuable publications. All these books were added to the library’s knowledge treasures comprising more than 70 languages.

Special activities

To celebrate its anniversary, the library will host a wide range of activities, including a comic art exhibition, cartoon shows, pianist performances, mental games, reading poetry, singing, a book club, in addition to performances by the Emirates Youth Symphony Orchestra.

The celebration will also include interactive activities for young library visitors, such as showcasing children’s talents in poetry, and playing the piano.

Aside from the activities and entertainment, MBRL’s celebration will host workshops for learning to draw, making glass basins, producing podcasts, iPhone photography, and recycling. Disney’s The Jungle Book movie will also be shown, in addition to an evening of Arabic poetry, storytelling, watercolor painting, and a document restoration workshop.

Navigate Your Career Path Like the Road Trip of a Lifetime

  • Carole-Ann Penney

plan your visit mbrl

Leave space for spontaneous detours and exploration.

Over the past few years, the way we work has changed. Recent data show that working in a single company, or staying confined to a single job title, for several years is becoming rarer. Not everyone’s career paths will be traditional and resemble a climb up a mountain. And that’s okay. We need a new way to approach our careers, one that allows us to be nimble and resilient. Why not  approach your paths like the road trip of a lifetime — to build an intentional career path that is unique, enjoyable, and adaptive to change.

  • Get in the driver’s seat. You don’t have to be confined to a predetermined path and you don’t have to stay on a single track — you can curate a portfolio of experiences. You can embark on a diverse and adventurous journey filled with discovery.
  • Know that the plan is iterative. When you set off on a road trip, you don’t plug your ultimate destination into the GPS and drive there as quickly and directly as possible. You ask yourself some key questions about what you want to experience along the journey: What kinds of places do I want to visit? What do I want to see and experience? When you embark on your career, know that it is okay to make detours.
  • Be open to unexpected opportunities and load up your trunk. On a  road trip, change is expected — that’s what makes it a rich adventure. Approach your career path with openness to unforeseen possibilities and seize them. You can even loop back to revisit somewhere you’ve been before with fresh eyes and new experience under your belt. As you explore, practice articulating the connections between where you’ve been and where you’re going. You should learn how to transfer your unique skills to each new role, as they can make you an asset in new spaces.

Gloria, a client of mine, thought her career path would be traditional and resemble a climb up a mountain. She aimed to follow the steps to success: First, she would choose a mountain by picking a field of work. Then, she would put in her time and build specialized skills. Next, she would shoot for the summit. She’d always been told that when you’re aiming to grow, there’s no room for stagnation or complacency, only linear advancement.
