Lovebirds will find charming bed-and-breakfast accommodations and adventure-filled daytrips across North Carolina.

For traveling twosomes on the hunt for a romantic retreat that offers escapes to both the beach and the mountains , North Carolina is the answer. Though the beautiful Blue Ridge Mountains sprawl from Georgia to Pennsylvania , the highest peaks are found here. In fact, the Blue Ridge range covers most of western North Carolina.

Do you and your better half prefer sunbathing on the sand to trekking the trails ? Look no further than the barrier islands of the Outer Banks . After all, bestselling romance novelist Nicholas Sparks set some of his most epic love stories – including "Nights in Rodanthe," "A Walk to Remember" and "The Rescue" – along the North Carolina coast. Whether you and your partner are looking for heart-pumping activities or a heavy dose of relaxation, you'll find all the romantic getaways you seek in the Tar Heel State.

For duos who crave a mountain getaway that doesn't skimp on luxury, Highlands is the perfect place to visit in the Carolinas . Located in southwestern North Carolina near the Georgia and South Carolina borders, Highlands is one of the highest towns east of the Mississippi River; it sits at an elevation of more than 4,100 feet. Thanks to its alpine location, the town offers postcard-worthy views at every turn. If you and your partner are here to indulge, check in to the Old Edwards Inn and Spa . Listed on the National Register of Historic Places, this Relais & Châteaux property offers a variety of accommodation options, including cozy cottages with fireplaces and private terraces. It's also home to a European-style spa that offers facials, massages and body treatments.

For a little more seclusion, reserve a room at Half-Mile Farm, the sister property of Old Edwards Inn and Spa. This adults-only retreat sits on the outskirts of downtown Highlands and embodies a farmhouse charm thanks to its setting on serene Apple Lake and the 14 bucolic acres of fields and forest that surround the property. Expect rustic-chic decor in the guest rooms and cabins, many of which treat you to lake views, fireplaces or Jacuzzi tubs. Past visitors praised the outstanding service and stunning grounds as highlights.

No matter where you choose to bed down, you'll want to explore the area's waterfalls. Take advantage of spectacular photo-ops at Dry Falls, where you can walk behind the cascading water, and Whiteside Mountain, where 750-foot-tall cliffs offer panoramic views of the surrounding mountains.

Taken from Southend, this picture shows the Charlotte skyline with its various lights on during a late blue hour

If you and your significant other are on the hunt for a metropolitan escape that promises delicious food, trendy bars and great live music, consider a trip to Charlotte . The city's rapidly growing dining scene leaves you with a dizzying array of restaurant options, but for a memorable meal in a cozy setting, make a reservation at The Fig Tree Restaurant. The restaurant occupies a historic landmark and serves a French and Italian-inspired seasonal menu. Cap off your evening by paying a visit to one of the city's rooftop bars, such as Merchant & Trade at the Kimpton Tryon Park Hotel or Fahrenheit. If you prefer to enjoy a cocktail with a side of live music, head to one of the city's smaller venues like Middle C Jazz.

Though the city is home to a variety of brand-name hotels, it also has its fair share of boutique properties, including The Duke Mansion . With just 20 individually decorated rooms, screened-in porches, more than 4 acres of landscaped gardens and a full breakfast each morning, The Duke Mansion offers a taste of Southern charm in the heart of Charlotte. For the ultimate romantic retreat, consider splurging on the Dowd Suite, which includes a soaking tub fit for two among other amenities. Outside your digs, you'll find a guest library and decor details reminiscent of the mansion's 1915 debut, such as checkered flooring and ornate chandeliers. For more local history, consider tagging along on a Segway tour of Uptown or a golf cart tour .

The hotel doesn't have a restaurant on-site, but thanks to its central location, it sits within easy reach of the eateries and bars found in the city's Uptown and South End neighborhoods. Take a stroll to intimate Italian eatery Stagioni or the lively patio at RuRu's Tacos + Tequila. What's more, The Duke Mansion offers room service for wine, beer and cocktails – perfect for a pre- or post-date night drink.

What could be more romantic than strolling through a vineyard with a wine glass in one hand and your love by your side? If this sounds like the dream scenario for you and your partner, consider a trip to Winston-Salem, known as the gateway to the Yadkin Valley. This region in northwestern North Carolina is home to more than 40 vineyards.

For the ultimate wine-filled getaway, head to Medaloni Cellars, a sprawling 22-acre estate about 15 miles west of Winston-Salem. The winery offers views of the Blue Ridge Mountains, as well as three on-site cabins designed just for twosomes. Or, for a taste of "Chianti in the Carolinas," drive about 40 miles west of Winston-Salem to Raffaldini Vineyards and be transported to Tuscany via its dry Italian-style wines.

After a day of tastings, couples can check into the 55-acre Graylyn Estate , where guests are referred to as "lord or lady of the manor" by the on-site butler staff. Turn the romance up a notch by booking one of the hotel's premium suites, which tout ornamental fireplaces and 17-head showers, among other luxurious amenities.

Asheville, North Carolina, USA Drone Skyline Aerial.

With the Blue Ridge Mountains as its backdrop, a slate of tasty restaurants and an impressive brewery scene, Asheville appeals to those who love the outdoors as much as they enjoy a well-prepared meal. Start your trip with a scenic drive along the Blue Ridge Parkway , where must-see attractions like Mount Mitchell and Craggy Gardens provide the perfect setting for an exciting hike or an Instagram-worthy sunset. After you've worked up an appetite on the trails, treat yourselves to a delicious meal at one of the city's top restaurants such as Cúrate Bar de Tapas, an intimate Spanish tapas restaurant, or Rhubarb, a farm-to-table eatery that specializes in Appalachian cuisine.

Asheville is also home to more breweries per capita than any other American city. Even if you and your significant other don't consider yourselves beer aficionados, it's still worth checking out a few of the city's popular breweries, including Highland Brewing, Burial Beer and Bhramari Brewing.

When you're ready to retire for the evening, take your pick between rustic yet romantic cabin rentals (many of which feature private hot tubs) or luxury at The Inn on Biltmore Estate . Just a shuttle ride away from George Vanderbilt's 8,000-acre Biltmore , the inn offers guests easy access to the estate, not to mention a seasonal outdoor pool, a spa, and rooms and suites inspired by the old-world elegance of the original Vanderbilt home.

Escape to the Blue Ridge Mountains with your sweetheart at the historic Omni Grove Park Inn . Built in 1913, this Asheville hotel boasts an enviable location atop Sunset Mountain and offers sweeping views of the stunning mountain range from its restaurants, bars and select accommodations. Heed the advice of past guests and spring for one of the Mountain View Rooms to make the most of your alpine getaway. For many past lodgers, the unbeatable vistas more than justified the pricey room rates. If you don't score a room with a view, you can admire the mountain scenery from Vue 1913, the property's AAA Four Diamond Award-winning restaurant.

When you're not admiring the landscape, indulge in a treatment (or two) at the resort's 43,000-square-foot subterranean spa, complete with cavernous rock walls, arches and tunnels. Or, if you and your partner prefer more adventure, put on your hiking boots and explore the property's Sunset Trail, which travels within the grounds up Sunset Mountain. There's also an 18-hole, Donald Ross-designed golf course on-site. When you're ready to explore off the property, consider booking a guided hiking tour of the Blue Ridge Parkway or a walking tour of downtown Asheville . At the end of a fun-filled day, cozy up by the massive stone fireplace and settle into one of the rocking chairs in the hotel's Great Hall.

A pedestrian mall of retail shops converted from old tabacco warehouses in Durham, NC

For couples who prefer a city escape to a mountain getaway, Durham offers an affordable yet luxurious respite. You'll be transported to an English country house at the elegant Washington Duke Inn & Golf Club , which sits on the stately Duke University campus on 300 pine-filled acres and serves as one of Durham's top hotels . Challenge your better half to a round of golf on the hotel's 18-hole Duke University Golf Club course, or venture off the property to the Sarah P. Duke Gardens. Sprawling across 55 acres, the attraction shelters a variety of gazebos, water features and themed gardens, such as the photogenic terrace gardens, perfect for stealing quiet moments with your sweetheart. Plus, access to the gardens is free.

For more leisurely strolling, head to Brightleaf Square, where historic tobacco warehouses now house locally owned restaurants and shops. Celebrate happy hour in style at the Counting House, the restaurant and bar at the 21c Museum Hotel Durham known for its inventive cocktails and art-filled ambiance. If a more casual atmosphere is what you're after, heed the advice of past travelers and head to Fullsteam Brewery, which abides by a "plow to pint" philosophy of using local produce to make its beers.

Wild Horses with blaze pattern on the beach in Corolla, NC (OBX).

The Outer Banks is a popular vacation spot for families, but this chain of barrier islands off the coast of North Carolina also offers an idyllic backdrop for those traveling sans kids. In fact, the Outer Banks provided the setting for the film adaptation of the Nicholas Sparks novel "Nights in Rodanthe." You and your significant other can feel like the stars of your own romance flick by booking a stay at the Inn at Rodanthe, the six-bedroom, oceanfront vacation rental featured in the film. Along with its unbeatable location on the beach , the rental also features multistory outdoor decks, an outdoor shower and a hot tub, among other amenities.

If you and your sweetheart are looking for a more traditional accommodation option, consider The Tranquil House Inn on the Manteo waterfront. Housing just 25 rooms, the inn provides an intimate atmosphere thanks to its spacious decks and porches, complimentary breakfast, and afternoon wine reception – a favorite amenity among past guests, who also recommend dining at the 1587 Restaurant & Lounge.

No matter where you and your beau choose to hang your hat, you'll want to admire the incredible coastal scenery of Cape Hatteras National Seashore and the Corolla wild horses: feral Spanish mustangs that live on the beach between the town of Corolla and the Virginia state line. For help spotting these majestic creatures and to learn more about the ecology and history of the island, sign up for a guided, four-wheel-drive tour of Corolla . Sports-loving pairs may also be interested in a paddleboard tour of Kitty Hawk and the North Carolina Coastal Reserve.

Couple on summer vacation enjoying walk on the waterfront. People waiting for the boat to Shackleford Banks. Beaufort, North Carolina, USA.

Not to be confused with Beaufort, South Carolina, this North Carolina town with the same name offers traveling twosomes a charming seaside getaway. Situated along North Carolina's Crystal Coast, known as the southern Outer Banks, Beaufort features boutiques filled with local wares, a downtown marina, plenty of delicious seafood, historical sites and seasonal ferry access to Cape Lookout National Seashore.

Acquaint yourselves with the waterfront and the historic district by signing up for a bike tour from an outfitter like Hungry Town Tours. As you two leisurely cycle along the waterfront and side streets, take time to admire the restored historic homes designated with plaques from the Beaufort Historical Association. History-loving pairs will also want to set aside an hour or two to peruse the North Carolina Maritime Museum, which displays artifacts recovered from Queen Anne's Revenge (the pirate Blackbeard's original ship), a shell collection and the skeletal remains of a sperm whale that washed ashore in 2004, among other displays.

Cap off your day with a sunset dinner at one of Beaufort's popular seafood eateries, such as City Kitchen, Aqua Restaurant and Front Street Grill at Stillwater. For a traditional B&B experience in Beaufort, book a stay at the Pecan Tree Inn, which offers several rooms with soaking tubs and semiprivate porches. For access to a plethora of on-site amenities, including a seasonal outdoor pool, a waterfront restaurant and a fitness center, consider the Beaufort Hotel.

Sunrise Over Lake Lure with Mist.

Although "Dirty Dancing" is set at a fictional resort in the romantic New York state destination of the Catskills, the iconic movie was actually filmed in Virginia and North Carolina – more specifically, Lake Lure. Nestled in the foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains about 30 miles southeast of Asheville, Lake Lure invites amorous duos to have the "time of their lives." Check in to The 1927 Lake Lure Inn & Spa, where stars Jennifer Grey and Patrick Swayze stayed during filming, and treat yourself to a few nights in Johnny's Cabin or Baby's Bungalow (accommodations named after the film's lovebirds).

Spot local attractions and landmarks featured in the movie during a guided boat or kayak tour of the lake, or get your heart pumping with a hike to the top of Chimney Rock at nearby Chimney Rock State Park. Though the 315-foot monolith wasn't featured in the film, the sweeping mountain views it offers will no doubt inspire romance.

Looking Glass waterfall and river on a beautiful fall day in the Appalachians of North Carolina

Looking for small-town charm and plenty of adventure? Brevard offers the best of both worlds. Located about 35 miles southwest of Asheville, Brevard sits in Transylvania County, known as the "Land of Waterfalls." Grab a map and explore the region's more than 250 waterfalls with your sweetheart by your side. Couples can venture to Pisgah National Forest to snap a selfie in front of Looking Glass Falls, one of North Carolina's most photographed waterfalls. For more impressive photo-ops, seek out Upper Whitewater Falls – called the "King of Waterfalls," as it's the highest waterfall in the eastern U.S. at 411 feet. For help capturing the best photos of the falls and the surrounding mountains, sign up for a guided photo tour .

After a day of chasing waterfalls with your love, retreat to The Greystone Inn, a hit among past lodgers for its stunning location. Raleigh, North Carolina, USA park and skyline.

North Carolina's capital city offers a healthy dose of tasty eats at its top restaurants , interesting museums and a buzzing nightlife scene. Along with winding paths for jogging and biking, there are also idyllic spots to set up a memorable picnic amid the park's permanent installations.

Treehouse Vineyards: Monroe

What could be cozier than sipping vino with your beloved in a secluded treehouse? Choose from Papa's Dream Treehouse or Horsefeathers Hideway for an overnight stay; both accommodations are equipped with a kitchenette, a bathroom with a shower, a queen-sized bed, heating and air conditioning, and a deck with a grill. Crabtree falls on the Blueridge Parkway in North Carolina

Nestled in North Carolina's High Country amid the state's highest elevations, Boone offers a great romantic getaway for adventure-loving couples. Powder hounds will be happy to hear that the Boone area is home to the longest and largest slopes in western North Carolina, with three ski resorts to choose from. Couples visiting Boone in the warmer months can take advantage of the pleasant temperatures with a hike on one of the area's top trails. The 2.5-mile Crabtree Falls Loop Trail leads to one of the most picturesque waterfalls in the Southern Appalachians and makes for a scenic spot to snap a selfie or even get down on one knee. As it inspired the setting for the famous novel, A Walk to Remember , this town is no stranger to romance. Beaufort is a small town on the Crystal Coast known for its architecture and atmosphere. It has an old-world southern charm as well as world class fishing. It offers a sweet slice of life with many boutiques and antique shops to stroll by. One of the best things to do in Beaufort is fish in the morning and stroll the town in the evening together.

The dock provides views of sailboats, sparkling shores, and even island wild ponies. Treat your honey to one of the many tasty places in the area such as Clawson’s, No-Name Pizza, General Store, or the weekly farmers’ market. There are plenty of water ventures to partake in including, diving, kayaking, and cruising.

anniversary trip ideas nc

This charming town has so much to offer and is the perfect spot for a romantic getaway in North Carolina. It’s a creative haven that inspires joy. Truly a unique and underrated vacation spot, there is much to explore. Progressive and vibrant, it was originally a mill town and railway depot. You will find a plethora of live music everywhere, from small DIY venues to outdoor beer gardens. The North Carolina Botanical Garden is a flora filled wonderland with romance written all over it.

The Carrboro Farmers’ Market has fresh and local produce along with artisanal craft goodies, all sold by the creators themselves. We love to wander the funky shops on Main Street, sip a coffee at the dreamy Cafe Driade, find our favorite microbrews at Steel String, and, of course, no Carrboro trip is complete without a bite to eat at Elmo’s Diner. Crossties BBQ is a must for a true Carolina experience set in vintage train cars. As the home of college basketball, it’s always fun to try and catch a game. If you prefer cinema to athletics, the Varsity Theater is a vintage staple of the community.

One of the best things to do in North Carolina is get outside in Brevard. Brevard is known as the land of waterfalls, what could be more amorous? The picture-perfect landscape of this town will steal your heart. It is a place of adventure and is perfect for an action-packed escape from reality. There are over 250 waterfalls and 1000 miles of hiking trails. The area is rich with woodlands – try a trek in Pisgah National Forest or Dupont State Recreational Forest.

Escape the Crowds in Ocracoke

Ocracoke

Ocracoke is an idyllic island of undeveloped and uncrowded coast and has some of the best beaches in North Carolina . Its raw and untamed spirit is infectious in all the best ways. Feel the freedom of life lived off the grid together. Time slows down on the island, allowing for lavish and lazy forays into fishing, kayaking, surfing, or strolling through the village.

Ocracoke lighthouse is a must visit. For the best photo ops, hit it up at golden hour and then catch the sunset from the tip top. Many charming local spots host live music, perfect for a drink and dance with that special someone. The harbor here is home to quaint shops, eateries, and beautiful views for the classic Carolina experience.

Chase Fireflies in Hendersonville

anniversary trip ideas nc

If you are looking for a mellow mountain town to imbibe all the best local beverages, head to Hendorsonville. The Cheers Trail showcases 16 different breweries, wineries, distilleries, and cideries. We love the Mineral and Lapidary Museum, a rare and sparkling collection of minerals, artifacts, fossils, gems, and geodes. Jump Off Rock is a small, secret, panoramic park perfect for a sunset picnic.

Rural North Carolina is traditionally home to an abundance of fireflies, only adding to its alluring charm. However, Hendersonville has a special specific type of lightning bug named the blue ghost firefly. They are the subject of many a magical myth and are known for glowing (as opposed to flashing) which creates a glittering blue wonderland around you.

Stroll Through New Bern

anniversary trip ideas nc

Famous for its role in The Notebook , New Bern is a deluge of fairy-tale delight within the Inner Banks. Its other claims to fame are being the birthplace of Pepsi and the original capital of the state. Needless to say, New Bern has a lot to be proud of and celebrates through charming cultural attractions. See if you can spot each and every kitschy bear statue scattered around the town.

The coastal Carolina history, along with southern hospitality, makes for a fun and friendly feel that’s more than welcoming. Its waterfront is vibrant, its downtown is bustling, and its art scene is abundant. There is also plenty of nature to explore at the heart of the Twin Rivers and many museums to learn more about this eclectic community. You will never be bored in New Bern.

Go Hiking in Blowing Rock

anniversary trip ideas nc

Known as North Carolina’s oldest travel attraction, Blowing Rock is a small mountain town called the crown of the Blue Ridge. The downtown is just sleepy enough while still having many adorable shops for every interest. It’s easy to spend a day wandering, shopping, sipping and eating here. The Blowing Rock History and Art Museum is a pleasant cultural outing for couples to discover more about the area together.

There are several picturesque North Carolina hikes in the area. Glen Burney trail is our favorite forested escape complete with dreamy waterfalls. The views from the eponymous cliff overlooking the rolling, lush peaks are enough to make anyone swoon. The quirkiest attraction is Mystery Hill. Located in an old apple orchard, it’s the site of a naturally occurring gravitational anomaly. It will turn your world upside down. Blowing Rock is truly a breath of fresh (mountain) air.

Soak in a Hot Spring in Hot Springs

anniversary trip ideas nc

Nothing says relaxing and is one of the best romantic getaways in North Carolina like a dip in the restorative mineral waters of natural hot springs. The geothermal heat creates the perfect temperature for a sweet and steamy soak. The town itself is a rustic haven for retreats with a history of healing. The Appalachian Trail runs right through the downtown, and Hot Springs is a popular stop.

To really pamper yourselves – let’s be honest you deserve it – enjoy a massage after your rejuvenating bath. If you want to kick it up a notch, try out the white-water rafting for some thrills on the French Broad River. There is a wonder-filled hike aptly called Lover’s Leap where you can gaze upon all of the Hot Springs from a scenic mountain overlook. Stop at the General Store to make a picnic and share a special snack with a view.

Stroll along the pier at Sunset Beach

sunset beach

One of the nicest beaches in the state – and the country, if you ask us – Sunset Beach lives up to its name. The coastline feels untouched and peaceful with endless expanse of sandy shores. Due to its special formation, you can see both the sunrise and sunset on the beach here for breathtaking views. There are many marine activities, and there is even a museum dedicated to their spectacular starry skies. However, if you chose to do nothing more than soak up the sea and seek out the perfect shell, we wouldn’t blame you.

The Kindred Spirit Mailbox tells you all you need to know about this sweet, serene town. Anyone who visits the mailbox is invited to write and share any thoughts, stories, or words of wisdom in the available notebook. It’s drawn contributors from all over the world and remains as a testament to the intrinsic love of people and the area.

anniversary trip ideas nc

This tiny town just outside of Asheville is the perfect example of southern hospitality. The warm and welcoming ambiance feels friendly and familiar immediately upon arrival. It’s a great escape for anyone with an affinity for the outdoors or history or wants a quiet break from the everyday hustle and bustle. The art scene is immersive with many open studios to watch local artists create.

Zebulon B. Vance is a restored pioneer homestead, shrouded in history and surrounded by idyllic scenery. A day at Lake Louise Park to reflect, read, or relax will leave you feeling rejuvenated. Half dog park, half beer garden, Wagbar is a unique set up and a favorite for friends both furry and human. Gotta Have It is a local vendors market selling any and every specialty item you never knew you needed. Honey and the Hive is another uniquely Weaverville experience, as a one stop shop for all things bee related.

Meet the Locals in Tryon

anniversary trip ideas nc

Tryon is a tiny town with a big personality, dubbed “The Friendliest Town in the South,” it’s hard to have a bad trip here. They thrive off a quirky climate and offbeat attractions. If you’ve ever found yourself daydreaming of existing in Prairie Home Companion, Tyron is the getaway for you. It’s an old railroad town turned creative haven, with the likes of F. Scott Fitzgerald calling it home.

Equestrian enthusiasts come from around the world to visit Tryon International Equestrian Center. Be sure to stop and see Morris the Horse, a beloved wooden statue and mascot for the town. The Old Mill Market Square is full of whimsical vendors to browse. You can also visit the humble cabin home tucked away in the foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains where legendary jazz singer and activist Nina Simone taught herself to play the piano at the age of three. Tyron is sure to put a sweet spell on you.

Upon graduation, she met her partner, Cameron, and they traveled the world together crossing 85 countries and seven continents. After, many years of international travel they settled down a bit and launched Lost in the Carolinas to share their experiences about and travel tips on South Carolina and North Carolina.

Planning an Asheville Romantic Getaway: Asheville Travel Basics

Asheville is a medium-sized city in Buncombe County, North Carolina. With a walkable downtown and easy driving to nearby attractions and sites, it’s ideal for a vacation or couples getaway.

Asheville is perhaps best known as the location of the Biltmore Estate, America’s largest private home that is basically a spectacular mansion set among the backdrop of the Blue Ridge Mountains. Have we mentioned that Asheville is photogenic?

What is the best time of year to visit Asheville, NC?

Having lived in Asheville, we can confirm that the weather won’t limit your visit. In fact, visiting Asheville in any season is doable and even recommended. We found summers to be fairly mild, with occasional hot days. The mountains seem to keep the city much cooler than cities to the east, like Charlotte or Raleigh .

Winter isn’t terribly biting, either. Having lived a long time in New England , Asheville in the winter feels mild and beautiful. While it does get a bit of snow, we rarely experienced any inclement winter weather. Aka, you’re unlikely to get snowed-in in downtown Asheville. (Note that more mountainous locations, including cabins you might stay in, might be in more snow-heavy areas. Keep this in mind when booking your accommodation).

And spring and fall are gorgeous—many people would likely suggest fall in Asheville as being the best time of year to visit, and they might be right, especially considering the magical foliage that lines the Blue Ridge Parkway during this season. And of course, fall may be the most romantic season.

How do I get to Asheville, NC?

Asheville has its own airport, which makes traveling there very convenient. We suggest renting a car for your visit to Asheville, as the airport is a good 20 minutes away. And while there are public transport options in Asheville, having a rental car can make visiting places like the Biltmore Estate easier.

How many breweries are in Asheville?

One of the number one Asheville FAQs is about the area’s breweries. Just how many are there? Turns out, there are at least 30 breweries currently operating in Asheville. However, the number changes all the time as new brewers spring up throughout the region. Wherever you go, rest assured you won’t go thirsty while in Asheville!

The Top Romantic Things to Do in Asheville

Stroll through luxury at the biltmore estate.

One can’t visit Asheville without spending time at the famed Biltmore Estate. The Biltmore is absolutely one of the top Asheville NC attractions for couples and a must-see for everyone!

This Vanderbilt mansion is known as the largest private home in America, but it more closely resembles a French chateau than an ordinary home. There are 8000 acres of land to explore at the Biltmore.

As you walk through the grand home hand-in-hand, you can pretend you’re living lives of luxury. (PS: If you’re ready to take your relationship to the next level, Biltmore is an excellent location for an engagement proposal).

Visiting the Biltmore Estate

Biltmore is more than just a big house. Not only can you tour the opulent interior of the home (which is especially magical at Christmastime ) but you can also visit an onsite vineyard, stroll through the gardens, hike trails, or participate in a number of outdoor activities. You can purchase your tickets directly from the Biltmore , or grab some discount Biltmore tickets via Tripster!

If you’re not sure if it’s worth it to visit the Biltmore, check out all the reviews of this popular Asheville attraction on TripAdvisor.  But from a personal standpoint, we love it and definitely recommend visiting.

If you’re looking for something different while at Biltmore, consider this stand-up paddleboarding adventure , which takes you along the French Broad River with gorgeous views of the Biltmore Estate. A unique way to tour the iconic property.

A historic building with a clean lawn in front surrounded by trees.

Go for a Peaceful Walk in the Botanical Gardens

If you haven’t had your fill of gardens at the Biltmore, you can step into Asheville’s Botanical Gardens . This is a really lovely place and a quiet respite from the happy chaos of the city. With free admission and free parking, it’s an activity that won’t break the budget.

Here you can observe much of Appalachia’s native flora. If you hope to see flowers in their full bloom, it is recommended that you visit in mid-April or mid-August.

If you find yourself in Asheville in the midst of summer (June and early July), you can catch the glorious rhododendrons at their full height. These are best spotted among the verdant green mountains of the Blue Ridge Parkway.

Take in One (or Many) of the Waterfalls in Western North Carolina

Asheville and the surrounding area are home to hundreds of waterfalls! You should make the most of these on an Asheville romantic getaway.

You can combine waterfall spotting with one of the many great hikes in the region. We especially recommend this one , which includes three waterfalls!) Not into waterfalls? Consider hiking the beautiful Black Balsam Knob.

There are tall narrow falls, wide-sweeping falls, waterfalls you can drive behind, and waterfalls you can bathe in. Sliding Rock and Skinny Dip Falls are a couple of the most popular swimming spots, but there are even more on this list.

You may have to drive a bit farther to see some of the most incredible falls, but trust us, it will be worth it!

Want to go on a guided hike with a knowledgeable local guide? You might opt for  this waterfall hiking tour, a five-hour excursion to some of Asheville’s best waterfalls.

Have a Conversation at One of the Local Coffee Shops

Oh, how we love coffee. When we lived in Asheville, we spent countless hours at the many delicious coffee shops in town . We suggest you take some time to do the same. There’s something special about sitting together over a relaxing cup of coffee….honestly it’s the perfect afternoon date idea.

And in Asheville, you’re pairing awesome coffee with the tremendous atmosphere of this Southern mountain town. Ah, we’re making ourselves envious just thinking about those delicious Asheville lattes!

Soar through the Skies on a Hot Air Balloon Ride

With the stunning natural beauty of the Blue Ridge region, you’ve got a great excuse to head to the skies.

A balloon ride for two is such a sweet thing to do together! It’s ideal for a special occasion, a proposal (hint, hint!), or just because . Why not check it off your couples’ bucket list while you’re in Asheville? There are several balloon companies in the area, but this one is especially highly rated on TripAdvisor.

Don’t forget the champagne!

Find Bliss at the Spa at Omni Grove Park Inn

There are a lot of gorgeous places to stay in Asheville. If you’re looking for luxury, we suggest the Omni Grove Park Inn. This is a spectacular hotel that commands a wonderful view over the city, not to mention its award-winning spa!

Get Lost in Books and Champagne at this Incredible Bookstore

Did we mention the fabulous champagne bar/bookstore? This unique spot is called the Battery Park Book Exchange .

With old and new volumes from floor to ceiling, plus a bar with tasty bubbly, you can spend a couple of hours locked in intense conversation with your partner.

Tour the Breweries

Speaking of booze…Asheville is well known for its abundance of breweries! The city itself has 26 breweries while the larger region contains a hefty 60! Clearly, you won’t go thirsty in this town. When seeking out A sheville attractions for couples, if beer is on your mind, make it a point to tour the breweries.

There are a lot of fun options for discovering Asheville’s breweries. There are guided tours, including bus and walking tours . For a small group, this walking tour will simplify things, bringing you to a few of the local favorite breweries. The tour includes samples and a souvenir pint glass.

Love to bike? This electric bicycle brewery crawl will guide you to all the best spots and let you explore Asheville by bike at the same time. So perfect for summertime in Asheville!

Considering how walkable downtown Asheville is, you can easily create your own DIY excursion. Our friend Paige has a nice guide to Asheville breweries to help you make the right choices! But really you can’t go wrong in AVL. We especially like these options:

  • Wicked Weed – 91 Biltmore Ave, Asheville, NC
  • Ben’s Tune-Up – 195 Hilliard Ave, Asheville, NC
  • Wedge Brewing Co. – 5 Foundry Street, Asheville, NC + 37 Paynes Way, Suite 001, Ashevillle, NC

Have an Adventure

Romance isn’t just candles and cocktails. We believe adventure should be a big part of your love story, too! And one of the most romantic things to do in Asheville, NC for couples just might be an outdoor adventure.

Consider rafting, tubing, zip-lining, mountain biking, stand up paddleboarding, or fly fishing. The French Broad River passes right through town, providing lots of opportunities for fun.

You and your partner don’t have to go it alone, either! There are plenty of options for guided outdoor excursions. Here’s a sampling of a few you might choose from:

  • Horseback riding on the Fern Forest Trail (sounds super romantic)
  • An affordable scavenger hunt adventure  (find the hidden treasures!)
  • River rafting trip  (100% adventure)
  • Asheville Ghost Tour  (get scared together!)

Of course, since it includes parts of the Blue Ridge and the Smoky Mountains, Western North Carolina also has great camping.  These spots are worth considering.

Take a Romantic Drive on the Blue Ridge Parkway

One of the most romantic things for couples to do in Asheville NC is cruise the Blue Ridge Parkway.

This is one of America’s most famous roads, and with good reason. The Parkway stretches for hundreds of miles and offers insane views, a bunch of great hikes, and a chance for a really fun drive.

An empty road winds through forest scenery with fall colors.

A huge number of people traverse the Blue Ridge Parkway each year…apparently more people drive the parkway than visit the Grand Canyon!

The scenery is lovely in all seasons, but the bright fall foliage attracts many.

You’ll want to carefully plan your itinerary so you can hit the top points on this road. Check out these must-see stops . Also, note that portions of the parkway are closed in the winter.

Clink Glasses at One of Asheville’s Many Rooftop Bars

For best results, we recommend a cabin with a big open fireplace, an outdoor jacuzzi (so you can stargaze), and incomparable views.

One walk down Main Street, and you’ll understand why: The Highlands resembles something out of a Dickens’ novel more than a city in the thick of rural Appalachia.

The Park on Main lives in the shadows of Olde Edwards Inn, which takes up a large part of downtown Highlands. However, that doesn’t mean The Park on Main should be overlooked when planning your romantic getaway. A stay at this boutique hotel also forces you to experience more of what makes The Highlands so unique instead of burning all of your vacation budget on overpriced resort amenities. The Park on Main is pet-friendly and offers high-end touches like heated marble bathroom floors and a courtyard modeled after Central Park.

A Beach Bum’s Paradise at Sanderling Resort in Duck

waterfront-shops-on-boardwalk-in-duck-1-visitnc

Waterfront shops in Duck — VisitNC.com

Nothing screams romance like the allure of private beaches and secluded islands, which is why I’ve included two very unique Outer Banks options. Sanderling Resort boasts everything expected from a AAA Four-Diamond Resort like three pools (including a tranquility pool), an award-winning spa, and plenty of opportunities for beach bumming. In addition, the resort offers excursions to help guests make the most of their beach vacation, like sailing across Currituck Sound to Sanctuary Vineyards, moonlight kayak tours, and off-road excursions to watch the wild horses of Corolla.

Go big or go home with a Sea to Sound Suite. The exclusive suites stretch from end-to-end of the Beach House building and offer waters views of both the Currituck Sound and the Atlantic Ocean from dual balconies. The expansive suites are complete with separate living and sleeping wings, fireplaces to cozy up to, and bathrooms so large you can park a car in them.

After a day of play, raise a glass to each other at Kimball’s Kitchen, a Wine Spectator award-winning restaurant. While the menu changes seasonally, diners can almost always expect homemade pasta options and plenty of fresh oysters.

Classic Spoils at White Doe Inn in Manteo

white-doe-inn

The second of the two Outer Banks’ options is the White Doe Inn on Roanoke Island. In contrast to the high-end resort amenities of Sanderling Resort, the White Doe Inn provides the romance of a bed-and-breakfast in the charming coastal village of Manteo. Yes, there are plenty of secluded beaches to get lost on, but there are also opportunities to experience history like the Elizabeth Gardens, Fort Raleigh Historic Site, and the Island Farm. Or, just amble the quaint streets of Manteo that overlook the marina.

The owners of the White Doe Inn go out of their way to make sure guests have the chance to rekindle their love. Celebrate your special occasion—be it a honeymoon, anniversary, or proposal—with the Love for All Seasons package, which includes a Celebration Tray, a three-course dinner for two, a 60-minute in-room Swedish massage, and a photoshoot with a local photographer.

Supplement your stay with Inn-Indulgences like the Celebration Tray with flowers, seasonal fruit, chocolate-dipped strawberries, gourmet cheese and crackers, and a bottle of wine; in-room massages; or something as simple as a picnic lunch for two. Some of the finishing touches in the Queen Anne-style inn include a four-course breakfast, afternoon desserts, and private dining options. Ask for a room with a fireplace to complete your stay.

The Country Estate Life (on a budget) at the Village Hotel on Biltmore Estate in Asheville

anniversary trip ideas nc

A stay on the Biltmore Estate used to only be possible for those privileged enough to afford a weekend at the elaborate Inn of the same name. With the opening of the less-expensive, yet still refined Village on Biltmore Estate , couples can afford a romantic escape to the Biltmore without breaking the bank. While the hotel may not offer the same views as the Inn, there is a convenience factor of being steps away from the estate winery and the shops and restaurants of Antler Village.

Make the most of your stay with the Discover Biltmore Package. The package includes breakfast at the Village Social, a choice of two VIP tours (wow your partner with the Red Wine and Chocolate Tasting), daytime admission to the Biltmore House, and an audio guide. Couples can splurge on extras like behind the scenes tours of the house, the Vine to Wine Tour and Tasting Experience, or a private lunch horseback trail ride.

After, retreat back to the Village Hotel for a cocktail in Village Social before retiring to your farmhouse-inspired room. Experience the Biltmore like the Vanderbilts but on a Bud Light budget.

Visit North Carolina

A Romantic Weekend in North Carolina’s Triangle

Whether it’s a hotel that caters to couples, romantic meals or a soothing spa, it’s easy to schedule a romantic weekend in Raleigh, Chapel Hill and Durham.

Whether it's a hotel that caters to couples, romantic strolls on charming streets, a tasty restaurant with lots of two-tops and North Carolina wines, myriad museums or a soothing spa, it’s easy to plan a romantic three-day getaway to North Carolina’s Triangle cities of Raleigh, Chapel Hill and Durham .

Day 1: Raleigh

Start an exploration of Raleigh strolling hand-in-hand through the North Carolina Museum of Art , one of the premier visual arts museums in the Southeast. Then head outside to the 164-acre art park that’s home to larger-than-life outdoor art installations.

The Raleigh Farmers Market is a great place to shop for specialty items from local farms to enjoy back home. Plus, comfort food makes for a tasty farm-to-table lunch at the State Farmers Market Restaurant .

Head to  Escazú Artisan Chocolates  in the afternoon for a lengthy dessert session for two. Located near downtown Raleigh in the Mordecai neighborhood, Escazú features bars, truffles, confections and more ideal for consumption right at the retail store and workshop – and later.

Raleigh and the rest of the Triangle can also be a great base for visiting romantic vineyards and tasting and toasting award-winning wines. Area options include Chatham Hill Winery in Cary, Hinnant Family Vineyards in Pine Level and Starrlight Mead in Pittsboro.

As the sun sets, check in at Cary’s luxurious The Umstead Hotel and Spa and re-confirm the early evening spa appointments you’ve hopefully already made. The Umstead made U.S. News & World Report’s list of “Best Hotels in the USA” for 2018.

anniversary trip ideas nc

The Raleigh area has many romantic dining venues. One post-spa possibility is to stay right where you are and book a table for two at Herons Restaurant , known for perfectly prepared seasonal cuisine. The Chef’s Table at Second Empire Restaurant & Tavern in the historic Dodd-Hinsdale House provides another unique option, giving you the opportunity to dine right in the kitchen with a special menu and wine pairings, all while interacting with the restaurant’s chefs and other staff.

Day 2: Chapel Hill

Before the short drive to Chapel Hill , start the day with delicious coffee, pastries, breads and more at Cary’s La Farm Bakery , an authentic French bakery where Master Baker Lionel Vatinet has created a modern bakery using centuries-old baking traditions and techniques.

anniversary trip ideas nc

After last night’s dinner and this morning’s breakfast, another romantic stroll may be in order. The North Carolina Botanical Garden is ideal for a stroll or picnic thanks to gorgeous, landscaped gardens. There are also great walking and picnicking possibilities at the bustling University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill , the oldest public university in the country.

Come afternoon, it's time to peruse  Ackland Art Museum’s permanent collection of more than 20,000 works of art, including one of our state’s premier collections of Asian art.

Next, check in at The Carolina Inn  (offers packages) or The Siena Hotel  (dog-friendly).

For dinner, Chapel Hill has many romantic offerings. Varied possibilities with ambience, cuisine and tables for two include Crossroads at The Carolina Inn, Il Palio at The Siena Hotel and Lantern .

After dinner, loosen up with the locals at The Crunkleton .

Day 3: Durham

Your day in Durham should begin at  Guglhupf , which crafts German and French artisan breads and more daily.

Next, there’s lots to explore in town including the Sarah P. Duke Gardens , which features Japanese-style walking bridges, gazebos, water features and more amidst 55 acres.

anniversary trip ideas nc

For lunch, head to the tasty Nasher Museum Café at Duke University’s Nasher Museum of Art . After lunch, there’s plenty of time to explore the modern 65,000-square-foot building, which houses multiple gallery spaces, a museum store and more.

Brightleaf Square is the perfect way to while away the rest of the afternoon in Durham. Here, turn-of-the-century tobacco warehouses have been converted into restaurants, art galleries, jewelry stores, clothiers and other specialty shops.

Next, check in at the Washington Duke Inn & Golf Club , where Duke University couples have been staying for years.

For dinner, reservations options for two abound. You can stay right where you are with a romantic table for two at Washington Duke Inn’s world-class Fairview Dining Room ; enjoy tapas for two at Mateo Bar de Tapas ; or try French bistro cuisine at Vin Rouge .

Afterward, grab two bar stools with the locals at late-closing plow-to-pint Fullsteam Brewery – a great place to toast your time together in the Triangle.

Whether you're celebrating a first anniversary , 10 years together or your silver milestone, consider this your go-to guide for a wide range of anniversary trip ideas for any kind of couple.

Take a River Cruise on the Nile

Extraordinary Journeys cruise ship

Imagine visiting ancient Egyptian temples and tombs decorated in hieroglyphics during the day, then returning to the comfort of a small ship floating on the Nile. The experience is even better if you take a traditional boat called a dahabiya , where you and your spouse will be among the few guests onboard and the captain can dock in places where bigger ships can't. River cruises are one of the top travel trends for 2024 and a cruise on the Nile is the ideal way to see this incredible but hard-to-navigate destination for an anniversary trip where romance meets adventure, with plenty of history and culture thrown in. Extraordinary Journeys will handle all the logistics and match you with an expert guide to ensure you have the perfect trip.

Road Trip the French Riviera

View of sunrise over Villefranche sur mer with Saint Jean Cap Ferrat,Cote d Azur,South of France

With a beautiful coastline, luxurious hotels, incredible food and wine, and plenty of cultural attractions, the French Riviera makes an ideal anniversary destination for couples who love the good life. After all, towns like Nice, Antibes, Cannes, and Saint-Tropez have inspired artists like Matisse and Picasso and drawn celebrities for star-studded events and glamorous vacations for a century. Highlights include exploring Vieux Nice with its charming cobblestone streets; staying at the Hôtel Belles Rives in Antibes, where F. Scott and Zelda Fitzgerald sojourned; strolling the Croisette in Cannes; and relaxing by the pool at Hôtel Lou Pinet in Saint-Tropez, which looks like a little provencal village.

Go on an African Safari in Botswana

Truck driving by elephants

African safaris are popular for honeymoons and they make great anniversary trips too. Botswana, in particular, is ideal for a milestone anniversary trip because you and your spouse can experience a range of different landscapes and ecosystems in the span of a week with Desert & Delta Safaris. You can feel the thrill of going on traditional land-based game drives in Chobe National Park—where Elizabeth Taylor and Richard Burton got married for the second time—and ply the waters of the famed Okavango Delta while spotting hippos, crocodiles and other water-based animals.

View the Northern Lights in Iceland

Panoramic View of Kirkjufell Mountain with Aurora

Visiting Iceland feels a bit like traveling on another planet. The landscapes—which include moss-covered hills, black sand beaches, and spraying geysers—are surreal. And if you visit during the winter, you have a good chance of seeing the Northern Lights . Spend your days soaking in the thermal waters of the Blue Lagoon and your nights sampling gourmet Icelandic cuisine and watching the Aurora Borealis dance across the night sky. If you stay at the Retreat at the Blue Lagoon, you'll have a section of the famed hot springs to yourself and can do a range of spa treatments, including a floating massage right in the lagoon.

Go Set Jetting in Sicily

view of SAN DOMENICO PALACE

Another popular travel trend is set jetting, i.e. traveling to destinations featured on your favorite TV shows—and what could be more glamorous than living la dolce vita in Taormina, featured in the second season of The White Lotus ? While we don't recommend partaking in the more risqué antics featured on the show, we can assure you that Taormina is just as beautiful in real life as it is on the silver screen—and so is the Four Seasons San Domenico Palace. The characters also visit Noto, a gorgeous baroque city on Sicily's eastern coast, which is worth a visit too.

Admire Modern Art in the Hudson Valley

Modern art

For New Yorkers who want to plan an easy anniversary trip close to home, it's hard to beat the Hudson Valley. Storm King sculpture garden is undergoing a $45 million expansion set to debut in 2024 and Dia:Beacon is a pilgrimage site for art lovers in a former Nabisco box-printing factory on the banks of the Hudson River. The town of Hudson is thriving, with great restaurants and independent boutiques opened by creative community members. New hotels, like Wildflower Farms, an Auberge Collection resort, offer fresh reasons to consider the area for a romantic anniversary trip.

Stay in an Overwater Bungalow in the Maldives

Bungalow in the Maldives

Who doesn't dream of waking up in an overwater bungalow and diving right into the clear blue sea? Whether you want to relive your dreamy Maldives honeymoon or just plan a romantic anniversary trip, staying in an overwater bungalow at JOALI, an art-immersive resort on a private island in the Raa Atoll is a perfect choice. Your jadugar (that's Maldivian for magician) can supply snorkeling gear, book activities like yoga classes and coral replanting, and organize a private romantic meal in the manta treehouse designed by South African artist Porky Hefer.

Go Island Hopping in the British Virgin Islands

People on a boat on the ocean

For couples who want to experience barefoot luxury at its best, a sailing trip in the British Virgin Islands would make a fantastic anniversary trip—no sailing experience necessary. When you charter a crewed yacht with the Moorings, you'll get a captain and chef to take care of your needs and plan the perfect island-hopping itinerary. You can visit the Baths on Virgin Gorda, a geological formation of caves and rock pools; hike on Norman Island for panoramic views; snorkel among the most beautiful reefs; and relax with a tropical cocktail in hand.

Stay in a Luxury Riad in Marrakech

Luxury Riad in Marrakech

Marrakech is one of the world's most fascinating and dynamic cities, full of beauty at every turn. Though the recent earthquake in the Atlas Mountains reverberated in the city, Marrakech is very much open for tourism, which is an important part of the economy. One of the pleasures of visiting Morocco is staying in a riad, a traditional dwelling with a courtyard in the center. There are many riads throughout the city, but without a doubt the most luxurious option is the Royal Mansour, where each suite is its own standalone riad with a living room, bedroom, and rooftop. The resort is located just outside the medina, making it easy to explore the souk and the thrumming energy of Jemaa El Fnaa.

Go on a Food Tour in Barcelona

Barcelona City Skyline with Sagrada Familia Cathedral at sunrise. Catalonia, Spain. Aerial view

Foodies will find a lot to love in Spain's second largest city. Barcelona has everything from no frills tapas bars to Michelin-starred fine dining restaurants and award-winning cocktail bars. The best way to get a taste of it all is to do a food tour through GetYourGuide. A local guide will lead you through three or four different neighborhoods, stopping along the way at a cafe to try churros with hot chocolate, sample jamón iberico and cheese at a market, and taste specialties like pan con tomates, tortilla, patatas bravas, and much more at a tapas bar. When not stuffing your face, you can visit attractions like Gaudí's La Pedrera, the Sagrada Familia, and Park Güell.

Soak in an Onsen in Kyushu

Women bathing at hot spring resort

Staying at wellbeing resorts is one of the top honeymoon and travel trends of 2024, and the Japanese island of Kyushu has a centuries' long tradition of soaking in thermal hot springs known as onsen. Japanese onsen culture dictates that bathers go nude in the public baths and these days, most onsen are separated by gender. However, for travelers who may be uncomfortable with public nudity and want to experience an onsen with their opposite-sex spouse, the ANA InterContinental Beppu Resort & Spa has a private onsen in addition to gender-segregated ones available to all guests.

Stay at an Elephant Sanctuary in Chiang Rai

Couple standing with elephants

There are several places in Thailand where animal lovers can visit an elephant sanctuary and spend some time with the gentle giants, but in Chiang Rai you can go one step further and stay at a resort that doubles as an elephant sanctuary. At Anantara Golden Triangle Elephant Camp & Resort, you can tour the sanctuary and even spend a night in a transparent jungle bubble surrounded by elephants. The peaceful pachyderms were saved from the logging industry, circuses, or begging on the streets of Bangkok and they graze in the area around the jungle bubbles, so while you and your spouse enjoy a romantic dinner on a raised wooden platform, you might be joined by some new four-legged friends.

Go Wine Tasting in Oregon's Willamette Valley

WINE COUNTRY LANDSCAPES

Napa Valley might be more well known, but if you want to discover an under-the-radar wine region close to home, the Willamette Valley is just the place for you. Located just an hour from Portland—which is also worth visiting—the Willamette Valley is home to around 500 wineries and has the ideal terroir and atmospheric conditions to produce delicate Pinot Noirs. Use the Allison Inn & Spa as your base and the region's top wineries will be within easy reach. Don't miss Sokol Blosser, one of the valley's pioneering wineries, and Domaine Roy & Fils housed in a modern-rustic A-frame with fantastic views of the valley below.

Go Skiing in Gstaad

Gstaad Palace Lobby

If you have a winter anniversary, why not lean into it and plan a trip to a veritable winter wonderland? Gstaad is one of the most charming towns in the Swiss Alps and has long been a favored destination of royalty and celebrities. You'll certainly feel like a VIP when you check into Gstaad Palace, a family-run member of the Leading Hotels of the World that has been welcoming guests for more than a century. After a day on the slopes, you can unwind in the spa, which is equipped with saunas and an indoor/outdoor heated pool, and savor fondue in a former bunker where Swiss banks hid their gold during WWII.

Visit the Ancient Temples of Angkor Wat

Angkor Wat

A bucket list trip perfect for a milestone anniversary, a journey to Cambodia to visit the ancient temples of Angkor Wat might bring out your inner Indiana Jones. Built in the 12th century as the royal seat of Khmer kings, Angkor Wat was originally a Hindu temple complex but became Buddhist before being abandoned in the 15th century. Now buzzing with life, it plays host to Buddhist monks in orange robes who will give you a water blessing. Outside the archeological park, Siem Reap has some wonderful art galleries, boutiques, restaurants, and performance spaces. The place to stay is FCC Angkor by Avani, an intimate resort in the former Foreign Correspondents Club.

Stay in a Castle in Sintra

Romanticism in Castle Architecture

When you think of beautiful European castles, Portugal might not be the first place that comes to mind, but just an hour from Lisbon, Sintra is full of marvelous castles built by the Portuguese aristocracy in the 18th and 19th centuries. You can visit the ones that have been turned into museums, like the famous Pena Palace, Palácio Nacional, and Quinta da Regaleira, but if you want to really step back in time, you can stay at the beautiful Tivoli Palácio de Seteais. Now a member of the Leading Hotels of the World, it was built in the 18th century and will transport you to that era with its period furniture, tapestries, crystal chandeliers, and frescoes.

Old historic Dutch houses reflecting in the canal on a sunny day, Amsterdam, Netherlands

Amsterdam is full of charm, especially in the spring and fall, when the golden light reflecting off the canals gives everything the hue of a Dutch master painting from the Golden Age. Culture vultures will find plenty to do in the city's Museum District—home to the Rijksmuseum, the Van Gogh Museum, and the Stedelijk Museum—while hopeless romantics should opt for a scenic cruise on the canals and quality time canoodling in historic brown cafés like Café Papeneiland, which serves delicious apple pie. Check into the Pulitzer Hotel, which occupies 25 canal houses joined together and renovated into a stylish property with great dining and drinking outlets.

Embrace Your Spiritual Side in Bali

Mandapa's suite

You don't have to be a fan of Eat, Pray, Love to plan a trip to Bali. From the beautiful beaches to the lush interior, this verdant island in the Indonesian archipelago is the stuff dreams are made of. It's also the perfect place to get in touch with your spiritual side and learn about Hinduism, the dominant religion on the island. Base yourself in Ubud, where you can stay in a bamboo treehouse at Bambu Indah or a more conventional (but still gorgeous) suite at Mandapa, a Ritz-Carlton Reserve, and visit temples like Tirta Empul (the Water Temple) and the temple complex in the Monkey Forest.

Go Diving in Belize

Overwater bungalow and jetty at sunset, Belize

If you and your spouse are experienced scuba divers, you've likely heard about the Great Blue Hole. A sinkhole in the Caribbean, it's one of seven UNESCO World Heritage sites that make up the Belize Barrier Reef System, the largest coral barrier reef in the Western Hemisphere. Diving it lets you get up close and personal with fish, sharks, eels, octopi, and other marine life. To dive it, you should base yourself in Ambergris Caye, a fun beach town in Belize, and book a day tour with an experienced guide. Just make sure you and your spouse have PADI advanced open water certification first.

Ride the Rails Aboard the Orient Express

Train going by mountains

Riding the Venice Simplon-Orient-Express is no ordinary train trip—it's a journey back in time to a more glamorous era. The vintage train has been painstakingly restored to its former glory with Art Deco details like lacquered wood paneling, Lalique lamps, and monogrammed china. Highlights of the journey include sumptuous meals in the dining car, tea time in your cabin, and tipsy evenings in the bar car. Guests tend to embrace the theme and dress up in elegant vintage garb. There are a number of routes through Europe, ranging from one to five days and stopping in cities like Paris, Venice, Amsterdam, Vienna, Prague, Budapest, and Istanbul.

Eat Your Way Through New Orleans

French Quarter, concert in Jackson Square

There are plenty of reasons the Big Easy makes a great destination for an anniversary trip. It's one of the most enchanting cities in the U.S., after all, with a rich history, world-famous cocktail culture (the Sazerac was invented here), jazz clubs, and incredible food. There are plenty of great new restaurants to check out, but you can't go wrong with classic spots like Café du Monde for beignets and Commander's Palace for creole gumbo. Stay at the Pontchartrain Hotel in the Garden District and let the concierge help you with reservations.

Vacation like Hollywood Royalty in Beverly Hills

The Beverly Hills Hotel entrence

Marilyn Monroe was a regular guest and Elizabeth Taylor stayed there for six of her eight honeymoons. The Beverly Hills Hotel, a member of the Dorchester Collection, is one of the most iconic hotels not just in Los Angeles but in the world. Everything from the pink exterior to the banana leaf wallpaper and the beautiful garden in the Polo Lounge just screams glamor. And while it's still a celebrity hotspot, the staff strive to make all guests feel welcome. Splurge on a bungalow and you might want to spend all your time there, but tear yourself away to go shopping (or window shopping) on the famed Rodeo Drive and hike up to the Griffith Observatory for views of the Hollywood sign.

Watch a Tango Show in Buenos Aires

Couple doing tango

Buenos Aires is sometimes called the Paris of South America, but it's so much more enchanting than that. The city has its own fascinating history and culture that you need to experience to understand. One aspect of the culture that's perfect for couples is tango, a romantic dance that originated in the late 1800s in the city's working-class neighborhoods and is still practiced today. In fact, just walking around San Telmo you're likely to hear tango music and perhaps see some street performers, but for a truly fantastic spectacle, book tickets to the Rojo Tango at the Faena Hotel.

Spot Celestial Phenomena in Texas

Big Bend Park at night

Spotting solar eclipses, shooting stars, and other celestial phenomena can bring couples closer together and is one of the top travel and honeymoon trends of 2024. But apart from major events like the Great North American Solar Eclipse that will happen in April 2024, there are plenty of opportunities to embrace the cosmos. According to the International Dark Sky Association, one of the best places for stargazing in the U.S. is Big Bend National Park in southwest Texas, near the Mexican border. The park is near Marfa, a pilgrimage site for art lovers where you might also be able to spot the mysterious Marfa Lights that appear randomly throughout the night.

Go Hiking in Patagonia

Mountains Patagonia

For avid hikers, one of the biggest bucket list trips is Patagonia, the last frontier of South America, which covers the southern tip of the continent in both Argentina and Chile. In Chilean Patagonia, dedicated hikers can do multi-day hikes and stay at little lodges on the trail or you can stay in Puerto Natales and do day hikes in Torres del Paine, driving tours of the park that allow you to cover more ground and see the park's natural beauty, and glacier tours on board a boat that plies the frigid waters of the fjords. For a luxe option, stay at the Singular Patagonia, a member of the Leading Hotels of the World inside a historic cold storage facility.
