One of the most romantic getaways in Charlotte NC, the Duke Mansion has 20 guest rooms with fine furnishings with a historic flare.

It’s a fine choice for a romantic North Carolina weekend trip to “the Queen city.”

The  Duke Mansion was built in 1915 as the home of James Buchanan Duke (of Duke University and Duke Energy fame. It’s listed on the NRHP, and is a non-profit created to protect the historic home.

The 4.5-acre grounds include beautiful botanical gardens , a guest library, and a fitness studio. There’s also a culinary staff to provide breakfast every morning, and in-room meals arranged in advance.

Located two miles from Charlotte’s uptown business and cultural district, the Duke Mansion also has several great restaurants within walking distance.

A romantic option for time spent here is the “Picnic Package,” which includes lunch for two and a bottle of champagne from a picnic basket.

3. Dunhill Hotel

4. Elkin Creek Vineyard

Nothing pops romance into the mix quite like pulling the cork from a delicious bottle of wine. And it’s even better when your lodging is at the winery upon which those grapes were grown!

Who knew that romantic weekend getaways in North Carolina could involve lots of locally sourced wines ?

In fact, there are over two dozen Yadkin Valley wineries  around the small town of Elkin NC  for visitors to explore.

Elkin Creek Vineyard, which is located on the outskirts of town, is the perfect romantic spot to use as a base for doing it.

The vineyard has four rental cabins situated along Elkin Creek, offering a rustic getaway with modern conveniences.

These  rental cabins all have full kitchens, queen beds, stone fireplaces, soaking tubs, and private porches. A short walk on site can include a historic mill, waterfall , vineyard, and winery.

Elkin also has a designated Historic Downtown area, and vineyards and wineries speckle the countryside of Surry, Wilkesboro, and Yadkin counties.

5. Graylyn Estate

1900 Reynolda Road, Winston-Salem NC • (800) 472-9596

The Graylyn Estate is a 55-acre property in Winston-Salem with several historic buildings on site , including The Manor House, the original 1930s residence.

The luxury hotel and conference center has become one of the most exclusive couples’ getaways in NC.

The house was originally built for Bowman Gray , the son of a co-founder of Wachovia Bank & Trust Co. who became Chairman of the Board of R.J. Reynolds Tobacco Company.

His Graylyn Estate was donated to Wake Forest University in 1972, and was used for special events until a fire damaged the property in 1980. After that, it was restored to its 1932 condition and used as a conference center.

Today, the historic property has 85 guest rooms. The Manor House has 34 rooms, The Mews (a reimagined Normandy-style farm complex) has 45 rooms, and Bernard Cottage has 9 rooms.

Gourmet dining is available at the Estate’s two restaurants , the casual Grille Room and the more upscale Graylyn Estate Dining.

6. The Greystone Inn

The mansion at the Greystone Inn was constructed in 1915, and each guest room has its own character and charm, with extras like stone fireplaces, lake views, and even lakeside terraces.

Located 20 miles southwest of Brevard near the South Carolina border, it’s the most southern of our romantic NC mountain getaways.

The Greystone Inn also has rooms at The Hillmont, which is tucked away on the shore of Lake Toxaway, plus two private 1-room suites in the Lakeside Cottage.

There’s a restaurant at the Greystone Inn with great menus for breakfast, lunch, and dinner, as well as a popular Sunday brunch. 

They also have an onsite spa for massages, body treatments, skincare, and more.

Lake Toxaway is replete with outdoor adventures, ranging from hiking and rock climbing to ziplining and snowboarding .

7. Haywood Park Hotel

9. Hot Springs Resort & Spa

Located along the picturesque   French Broad River , the Hot Springs Resort & Spa offers a real sense of being surrounded by the Appalachian Mountains . 

It’s one of the most inexpensive romantic getaways in NC, and offers a little something for everyone.

Through-hikers on the Appalachian Trail in North Carolina can stop at the campground , while budget-conscious families might set up their RVs.

But couples can find rest, relaxation, and romance in their private cabins and suites with full amenities.

The big draw to Hot Springs NC  is the healing mineral baths for which the town was named, which melt away stress, revive muscles, and improve circulation.

Guests can rent private outdoor tubs with jets and fresh water constantly flowing from deep in the earth.

There are four units at the resort that have the famed natural Hot Springs water jetted directly into private, heart-shaped soaking tubs.

Nearby is the charming little town of Hot Springs, which was voted Best Small Mountain Town  by Blue Ridge Outdoors , and Asheville is only about 40 minutes away.

10. The Inn on Biltmore Estate

For a ridiculous taste of luxury done to the tilt, it’s hard to beat the Biltmore Estate, the former home of the Vanderbilts and “America’s Largest Home.”

All the other romantic getaways in Asheville NC strive to operate at this level.

Guest accommodations are available at The Inn on Biltmore Estate (for complete old-school luxury), the Village Hotel (which has comfy, modern rooms), or historic cottages.

The estate encompasses over 8,000 acres and includes manicured gardens , lushly designed landscapes, a winery , shopping, and plenty of walking trails.

There are seven Biltmore restaurants , ranging from 4-star dining to light bites and barbecue from a food truck. They also have a wine bar serving up Biltmore’s own varietals.

Of course, there is a luxury spa offering massages and skin treatments in refined settings.

Downtown Asheville is just a short drive away, the Blue Ridge Parkway is nearby, and  Pisgah National Forest  (which was created on Vanderbilt land) offers up an array of outdoor adventures.

11. Kimpton Cardinal Hotel

Winston-Salem is one of my favorite places to visit in North Carolina. It’s full of historic sites, and downtown is teeming with art, stunning architecture, and craft breweries .

Established in 1929, The Cardinal Hotel is considered the best hotel in town. Its rec room has foosball, ping-pong, card tables, an 80″ TV, and more.

There’s also a fitness center, The Katharine restaurant, and a beautiful wedding venue.

Rooms at The Cardinal offer “avant-garde grace,” with soft King or Queen beds, Frette linens, and Atelier Bloem bathroom amenities. Some have premium additions (soaker tubs, amazing city views), and there are 3 suites to choose from.

The Kimpton offers a full-service wedding package with everything from the rehearsal dinner to the ceremony, after-party, and farewell brunch included. Winston-Salem is also a perfect place for a North Carolina honeymoon!

12. Lake Logan

Located 10 miles south of Waynesville NC, Lake Logan is a 300-acre property adjacent to both the  Pisgah National Forest and the Shining Rock Wilderness Area.

Quiet and secluded, with lots of space between the cabins and wildlife all around, this beautiful lake is a peaceful spot for romantic mountain getaways in NC.

The retreat is owned and operated by the Episcopal Diocese of Western North Carolina, and hosts a camp for kids every summer . But they welcome all, and the property has no overt religious elements.

The grounds have several historic buildings, including early 1900s rental cabins with lake views, stone fireplaces, and comfy porches for rent.

Meals are served buffet-style in a lodge overlooking the West Fork of the Pigeon River. The property also has a boat house with kayaks and canoes, onsite hiking trails , game courts, and outdoor pavilions.

Lake Logan is also a popular wedding venue, with the capacity to accommodate entire wedding parties.

13. Lake Lure Inn & Spa

Lake Lure and the Lake Lure Inn & Spa are legends for being one of the settings in the 1980s film classic  Dirty Dancing , with Patrick Swayze and Jennifer Grey actually staying at the Inn during filming.

For this nostalgic association alone, it is beloved as one of the top NC mountain resorts for couples.

The 69-room hotel is historic, dating back to the 1920s, and it has since added three rental cabins —Overlook Cabin, Johnny’s Cabin, and Baby’s Bungalow— for more private accommodation options.

Food is available at the Veranda Restaurant , and cocktails with a view are available at the Moose & Goose Lounge. The Irongate Spa provides luxury body care and various couples’ treatments.

Lake Lure also has its own beach for swimming when the weather is warm.

It’s located near Chimney Rock State Park , with a fun tourist village just outside the state park’s  entrance.

14. Lakeview at Fontana

A great place for getting away from it all (and in touch with nature), Lakeview at Fontana offers lake views of Fontana Lake and vistas of the Great Smoky Mountains .

If you’re seeking a couples getaway, NC-style, it doesn’t get much more dazzling than this.

Surrounded by the Nantahala National Forest , the resort keeps guests in the moment by leaving rooms free of Wi-Fi and TVs, as well as keeping the place adult-only. There is a Wi-Fi lounge for those who must stay connected. 

Accommodation options include Queen and King-sized rooms , 1-bedroom suites, 2-bedroom suites, and 3-bedroom suites.

The most noteworthy feature is the treetop soaking cabanas, which have remarkable views and comfy extras like robes, Turkish towels, and soaking salts. Their Cloud 9 Romance Ritual soak includes chilled champagne as well. 

Bryson City is located nearby, with great restaurants and loads of small-town charm. The Deep Creek section of the Great Smoky Mountains National Park  also has stunning waterfalls to explore.

15. The Mast Farm Inn

Combining rustic simplicity with style and comfort, the Mast Farm Inn is a great resort near Blowing Rock , Boone , and Banner Elk .

The Historic Farmhouse has 7 rooms for let, and there are four cottages for more privacy.

Owners of the Mast Farm Inn boast that the 200-year-old floors creak and the crickets are loud.

But they provide a wonderful experience in a stunning mountain setting, making the farm one of the most romantic places to visit in North Carolina .

Valle Tavern is located inside the inn and serves two-course breakfasts, locally-sourced curated dinners, and weekend wine and cocktails.

The Mast Farm Inn is also a wedding venue, with great sites to stage the event and catering by Valle Tavern available.

16. Omni Grove Park Inn

A historic hotel and romantic getaway in Asheville , the Grove Park Inn has been serving guests (including several US Presidents) for over a century now.

This property is listed on the National Register of Historic Places, and it’s the location of the National Gingerbread House Competition   every year during Christmas in Asheville .

The main building was constructed in 1913 on the western slope of Sunset Mountain, and it boasted of having “walls 5 feet thick of granite boulders.”

Now owned by Omni Hotels, the modern resort includes that original historic hotel, as well as an 18-hole golf course, 40,000 square-foot subterranean spa, and several critically acclaimed restaurant options.

In addition to skin treatments and massages, their top-rated spa includes therapeutic waterfalls , mineral-based pools, and an oversized hot tub with stunning mountain views.

17. The Swag

20. Village Hotel on Biltmore Estate

The Biltmore’s reputation precedes itself in terms of luxury and elegance. So it comes as no surprise that the Village Hotel on Biltmore Estate is full of all that and more.

Amenities at the Village Hotel are the same as all Biltmore accommodations options. All guests get access to the Biltmore grounds, Antler Hill Village &  Winery , and The Spa at Biltmore. There’s also a fitness center and a heated pool.

Room options include the Village Room with a king bed (or two double beds), and the Village Studio King with conversational seating and a twin daybed.

The Village Double with Living Room features a bedroom with two double beds, a living room, and two bathrooms.

Chase Waterfalls in Brevard

One of the best things to do in North Carolina is get outside in Brevard. Brevard is known as the land of waterfalls, what could be more amorous? The picture-perfect landscape of this town will steal your heart. It is a place of adventure and is perfect for an action-packed escape from reality. There are over 250 waterfalls and 1000 miles of hiking trails. The area is rich with woodlands – try a trek in Pisgah National Forest or Dupont State Recreational Forest. 

It’s an unspoiled destination, with endless outdoor activities from rock climbing to kayaking to mountain biking to ziplining. In downtown Brevard, Main Street is an Americana dreamscape. It’s home to many quirky festivals, so be sure to plan your visit to coincide with one such festive event. You must also try and catch a glimpse of the most famous residents here, the White Squirrels! 

Escape the Crowds in Ocracoke

Ocracoke is an idyllic island of undeveloped and uncrowded coast and has some of the best beaches in North Carolina . Its raw and untamed spirit is infectious in all the best ways. Feel the freedom of life lived off the grid together. Time slows down on the island, allowing for lavish and lazy forays into fishing, kayaking, surfing, or strolling through the village. 

Ocracoke lighthouse is a must visit. For the best photo ops, hit it up at golden hour and then catch the sunset from the tip top. Many charming local spots host live music, perfect for a drink and dance with that special someone. The harbor here is home to quaint shops, eateries, and beautiful views for the classic Carolina experience.  

Chase Fireflies in Hendersonville

If you are looking for a mellow mountain town to imbibe all the best local beverages, head to Hendorsonville. The Cheers Trail showcases 16 different breweries, wineries, distilleries, and cideries. We love the Mineral and Lapidary Museum, a rare and sparkling collection of minerals, artifacts, fossils, gems, and geodes. Jump Off Rock is a small, secret, panoramic park perfect for a sunset picnic. 

Rural North Carolina is traditionally home to an abundance of fireflies, only adding to its alluring charm. However, Hendersonville has a special specific type of lightning bug named the blue ghost firefly. They are the subject of many a magical myth and are known for glowing (as opposed to flashing) which creates a glittering blue wonderland around you. 

Stroll Through New Bern

Famous for its role in The Notebook , New Bern is a deluge of fairy-tale delight within the Inner Banks. Its other claims to fame are being the birthplace of Pepsi and the original capital of the state. Needless to say, New Bern has a lot to be proud of and celebrates through charming cultural attractions. See if you can spot each and every kitschy bear statue scattered around the town. 

The coastal Carolina history, along with southern hospitality, makes for a fun and friendly feel that’s more than welcoming. Its waterfront is vibrant, its downtown is bustling, and its art scene is abundant. There is also plenty of nature to explore at the heart of the Twin Rivers and many museums to learn more about this eclectic community. You will never be bored in New Bern. 

Go Hiking in Blowing Rock 

Known as North Carolina’s oldest travel attraction, Blowing Rock is a small mountain town called the crown of the Blue Ridge. The downtown is just sleepy enough while still having many adorable shops for every interest. It’s easy to spend a day wandering, shopping, sipping and eating here. The Blowing Rock History and Art Museum is a pleasant cultural outing for couples to discover more about the area together. 

There are several picturesque North Carolina hikes in the area. Glen Burney trail is our favorite forested escape complete with dreamy waterfalls. The views from the eponymous cliff overlooking the rolling, lush peaks are enough to make anyone swoon. The quirkiest attraction is Mystery Hill. Located in an old apple orchard, it’s the site of a naturally occurring gravitational anomaly. It will turn your world upside down. Blowing Rock is truly a breath of fresh (mountain) air. 

Soak in a Hot Spring in Hot Springs

Nothing says relaxing and is one of the best romantic getaways in North Carolina like a dip in the restorative mineral waters of natural hot springs. The geothermal heat creates the perfect temperature for a sweet and steamy soak. The town itself is a rustic haven for retreats with a history of healing. The Appalachian Trail runs right through the downtown, and Hot Springs is a popular stop. 

To really pamper yourselves – let’s be honest you deserve it – enjoy a massage after your rejuvenating bath. If you want to kick it up a notch, try out the white-water rafting for some thrills on the French Broad River. There is a wonder-filled hike aptly called Lover’s Leap where you can gaze upon all of the Hot Springs from a scenic mountain overlook. Stop at the General Store to make a picnic and share a special snack with a view. 

Stroll along the pier at Sunset Beach

One of the nicest beaches in the state – and the country, if you ask us – Sunset Beach lives up to its name. The coastline feels untouched and peaceful with endless expanse of sandy shores. Due to its special formation, you can see both the sunrise and sunset on the beach here for breathtaking views. There are many marine activities, and there is even a museum dedicated to their spectacular starry skies. However, if you chose to do nothing more than soak up the sea and seek out the perfect shell, we wouldn’t blame you.

Anyone who visits the mailbox is invited to write and share any thoughts, stories, or words of wisdom in the available notebook. It’s drawn contributors from all over the world and remains as a testament to the intrinsic love of people and the area. 

Enjoy the Art scene in Weaverville

This tiny town just outside of Asheville is the perfect example of southern hospitality. The warm and welcoming ambiance feels friendly and familiar immediately upon arrival. It’s a great escape for anyone with an affinity for the outdoors or history or wants a quiet break from the everyday hustle and bustle. The art scene is immersive with many open studios to watch local artists create. 

Zebulon B. Vance is a restored pioneer homestead, shrouded in history and surrounded by idyllic scenery. A day at Lake Louise Park to reflect, read, or relax will leave you feeling rejuvenated. Half dog park, half beer garden, Wagbar is a unique set up and a favorite for friends both furry and human. Gotta Have It is a local vendors market selling any and every specialty item you never knew you needed. Honey and the Hive is another uniquely Weaverville experience, as a one stop shop for all things bee related. 

Meet the Locals in Tryon

Tryon is a tiny town with a big personality, dubbed “The Friendliest Town in the South,” it’s hard to have a bad trip here. They thrive off a quirky climate and offbeat attractions. If you’ve ever found yourself daydreaming of existing in Prairie Home Companion, Tyron is the getaway for you. It’s an old railroad town turned creative haven, with the likes of F. Scott Fitzgerald calling it home. 

Equestrian enthusiasts come from around the world to visit Tryon International Equestrian Center. Be sure to stop and see Morris the Horse, a beloved wooden statue and mascot for the town. The Old Mill Market Square is full of whimsical vendors to browse. You can also visit the humble cabin home tucked away in the foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains where legendary jazz singer and activist Nina Simone taught herself to play the piano at the age of three. Asheville is definitely a city that holds a special place in our hearts.

Born and raised in North Carolina, Nathan can’t help but love this beautiful gem of his home state, and I fell in love with this mountain town when he first took me to visit way back in 2012. We ended up moving to Asheville and living there for two wonderful years, and near the end of our stay, we got married there .

So during those few years in the region, we got to discover for ourselves the best things to do in Asheville for couples. After all, we were a young couple in the early days of our relationship (and in the midst of newlywed bliss), so we were always looking for date night ideas or sweet mushy coupley stuff. 

What we discovered has now been put together in this list for you. Planning an Asheville Romantic Getaway: Asheville Travel Basics

Asheville is a medium-sized city in Buncombe County, North Carolina. With a walkable downtown and easy driving to nearby attractions and sites, it’s ideal for a vacation or couples getaway.

Asheville is perhaps best known as the location of the Biltmore Estate, America’s largest private home that is basically a spectacular mansion set among the backdrop of the Blue Ridge Mountains. Have we mentioned that Asheville is photogenic?

What is the best time of year to visit Asheville, NC?

Having lived in Asheville, we can confirm that the weather won’t limit your visit. In fact, visiting Asheville in any season is doable and even recommended. We found summers to be fairly mild, with occasional hot days. The mountains seem to keep the city much cooler than cities to the east, like Charlotte or Raleigh .

Winter isn’t terribly biting, either. Having lived a long time in New England , Asheville in the winter feels mild and beautiful. While it does get a bit of snow, we rarely experienced any inclement winter weather. Aka, you’re unlikely to get snowed-in in downtown Asheville. (Note that more mountainous locations, including cabins you might stay in, might be in more snow-heavy areas. Keep this in mind when booking your accommodation).

And spring and fall are gorgeous—many people would likely suggest fall in Asheville as being the best time of year to visit, and they might be right, especially considering the magical foliage that lines the Blue Ridge Parkway during this season. And of course, fall may be the most romantic season.

How do I get to Asheville, NC?

Asheville has its own airport, which makes traveling there very convenient. We suggest renting a car for your visit to Asheville, as the airport is a good 20 minutes away. And while there are public transport options in Asheville, having a rental car can make visiting places like the Biltmore Estate easier.

How many breweries are in Asheville?

One of the number one Asheville FAQs is about the area’s breweries. Just how many are there? Turns out, there are at least 30 breweries currently operating in Asheville. However, the number changes all the time as new brewers spring up throughout the region. Wherever you go, rest assured you won’t go thirsty while in Asheville!

Stroll through luxury at the biltmore estate.

One can’t visit Asheville without spending time at the famed Biltmore Estate. The Biltmore is absolutely one of the top Asheville NC attractions for couples and a must-see for everyone!

This Vanderbilt mansion is known as the largest private home in America, but it more closely resembles a French chateau than an ordinary home. There are 8000 acres of land to explore at the Biltmore.

As you walk through the grand home hand-in-hand, you can pretend you’re living lives of luxury. (PS: If you’re ready to take your relationship to the next level, Biltmore is an excellent location for an engagement proposal).

Visiting the Biltmore Estate

Biltmore is more than just a big house. Not only can you tour the opulent interior of the home (which is especially magical at Christmastime ) but you can also visit an onsite vineyard, stroll through the gardens, hike trails, or participate in a number of outdoor activities. If you’re looking for something different while at Biltmore, consider this stand-up paddleboarding adventure , which takes you along the French Broad River with gorgeous views of the Biltmore Estate. A unique way to tour the iconic property.

Go for a Peaceful Walk in the Botanical Gardens

If you haven’t had your fill of gardens at the Biltmore, you can step into Asheville’s Botanical Gardens . This is a really lovely place and a quiet respite from the happy chaos of the city. With free admission and free parking, it’s an activity that won’t break the budget.

Here you can observe much of Appalachia’s native flora. If you hope to see flowers in their full bloom, it is recommended that you visit in mid-April or mid-August.

If you find yourself in Asheville in the midst of summer (June and early July), you can catch the glorious rhododendrons at their full height. These are best spotted among the verdant green mountains of the Blue Ridge Parkway.

Take in One (or Many) of the Waterfalls in Western North Carolina

Asheville and the surrounding area are home to hundreds of waterfalls! You should make the most of these on an Asheville romantic getaway.

You can combine waterfall spotting with one of the many great hikes in the region. We especially recommend this one , which includes three waterfalls!) Not into waterfalls? Consider hiking the beautiful Black Balsam Knob.

There are tall narrow falls, wide-sweeping falls, waterfalls you can drive behind, and waterfalls you can bathe in. Sliding Rock and Skinny Dip Falls are a couple of the most popular swimming spots, but there are even more on this list.

You may have to drive a bit farther to see some of the most incredible falls, but trust us, it will be worth it!

Oh, how we love coffee. When we lived in Asheville, we spent countless hours at the many delicious coffee shops in town . We suggest you take some time to do the same. There’s something special about sitting together over a relaxing cup of coffee….honestly it’s the perfect afternoon date idea.

And in Asheville, you’re pairing awesome coffee with the tremendous atmosphere of this Southern mountain town. Ah, we’re making ourselves envious just thinking about those delicious Asheville lattes!

Soar through the Skies on a Hot Air Balloon Ride

With the stunning natural beauty of the Blue Ridge region, you’ve got a great excuse to head to the skies.

A balloon ride for two is such a sweet thing to do together! It’s ideal for a special occasion, a proposal (hint, hint!), or just because . Why not check it off your couples’ bucket list while you’re in Asheville? There are several balloon companies in the area, but this one is especially highly rated on TripAdvisor.

Find Bliss at the Spa at Omni Grove Park Inn

There are a lot of gorgeous places to stay in Asheville. If you’re looking for luxury, we suggest the Omni Grove Park Inn. This is a spectacular hotel that commands a wonderful view over the city, not to mention its award-winning spa!

The treatments are reportedly awesome, and there is even a couples session that includes dual exfoliation, a warm mineral and aloe body masque, plus a full-body relaxation massage with essential oils.

Get Lost in Books and Champagne at this Incredible Bookstore

Did we mention the fabulous champagne bar/bookstore? This unique spot is called the Battery Park Book Exchange .

With old and new volumes from floor to ceiling, plus a bar with tasty bubbly, you can spend a couple of hours locked in intense conversation with your partner.

Speaking of booze…Asheville is well known for its abundance of breweries! The city itself has 26 breweries while the larger region contains a hefty 60! Clearly, you won’t go thirsty in this town. Romance isn’t just candles and cocktails. We believe adventure should be a big part of your love story, too! And one of the most romantic things to do in Asheville, NC for couples just might be an outdoor adventure.

Consider rafting, tubing, zip-lining, mountain biking, stand up paddleboarding, or fly fishing. The French Broad River passes right through town, providing lots of opportunities for fun.

2023 is the Year of the Trail in NC, and we’re extending our trail experiences into April! This month we’ve added some more strenuous trails as the weather improves and becomes more predictable. Whether it's a hotel that caters to couples, romantic strolls on charming streets, a tasty restaurant with lots of two-tops and North Carolina wines, myriad museums or a soothing spa, it’s easy to plan a romantic three-day getaway to North Carolina’s Triangle cities of Raleigh, Chapel Hill and Durham .

Day 1: Raleigh

Start an exploration of Raleigh strolling hand-in-hand through the North Carolina Museum of Art , one of the premier visual arts museums in the Southeast. Then head outside to the 164-acre art park that’s home to larger-than-life outdoor art installations.

The Raleigh Farmers Market is a great place to shop for specialty items from local farms to enjoy back home. Plus, comfort food makes for a tasty farm-to-table lunch at the State Farmers Market Restaurant .

Head to  Escazú Artisan Chocolates  in the afternoon for a lengthy dessert session for two. Located near downtown Raleigh in the Mordecai neighborhood, Escazú features bars, truffles, confections and more ideal for consumption right at the retail store and workshop – and later.

Raleigh and the rest of the Triangle can also be a great base for visiting romantic vineyards and tasting and toasting award-winning wines. Area options include Chatham Hill Winery in Cary, Hinnant Family Vineyards in Pine Level and Starrlight Mead in Pittsboro.

The Raleigh area has many romantic dining venues. One post-spa possibility is to stay right where you are and book a table for two at Herons Restaurant , known for perfectly prepared seasonal cuisine. The Chef’s Table at Second Empire Restaurant & Tavern in the historic Dodd-Hinsdale House provides another unique option, giving you the opportunity to dine right in the kitchen with a special menu and wine pairings, all while interacting with the restaurant’s chefs and other staff.

Day 2: Chapel Hill

Before the short drive to Chapel Hill , start the day with delicious coffee, pastries, breads and more at Cary’s La Farm Bakery , an authentic French bakery where Master Baker Lionel Vatinet has created a modern bakery using centuries-old baking traditions and techniques.

After last night’s dinner and this morning’s breakfast, another romantic stroll may be in order. The North Carolina Botanical Garden is ideal for a stroll or picnic thanks to gorgeous, landscaped gardens. There are also great walking and picnicking possibilities at the bustling University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill , the oldest public university in the country.

Come afternoon, it's time to peruse  Ackland Art Museum’s permanent collection of more than 20,000 works of art, including one of our state’s premier collections of Asian art.

Day 3: Durham

Your day in Durham should begin at  Guglhupf , which crafts German and French artisan breads and more daily.

Next, there’s lots to explore in town including the Sarah P. Duke Gardens , which features Japanese-style walking bridges, gazebos, water features and more amidst 55 acres.

For lunch, head to the tasty Nasher Museum Café at Duke University’s Nasher Museum of Art . After lunch, there’s plenty of time to explore the modern 65,000-square-foot building, which houses multiple gallery spaces, a museum store and more.

Brightleaf Square is the perfect way to while away the rest of the afternoon in Durham. Here, turn-of-the-century tobacco warehouses have been converted into restaurants, art galleries, jewelry stores, clothiers and other specialty shops.

Next, check in at the Washington Duke Inn & Golf Club , where Duke University couples have been staying for years.
