7. Place dâAusterlitz and Grotte Napoleon
Place dâAusterlitz is the place where, according to the legend, Napoleon liked to play as a child. Grotte Napoleon refers to the large sheltered rocks behind the square where he used to play and dream of conquest and glory, fascinated by the great characters of history.
Nowadays, the square is dominated by another impressive statue of Napoleon standing on a white granite pyramid, erected in 1938. The monument is known as Monument commémoratif de Napoléon 1er , or Le Casone , and depicts Napoleon in a military uniform he wore in the Battle of Austerlitz. This monument is located around 1.5 km/0.9 miles (a 20-minute walk) from Ajaccio port.
Note : There is also a cultural and interpretation center âLa Grotte Napoleonâ located on 4 Rue Saint-Charles in Ajaccio downtown. This center offers a cultural, visual and tasting experience where youâll have an insight into Napoleonâs life. Donât mix it with Grotte Napoleon on Place dâAusterlitz.
8. Fesch Museum

10. Sanguinaires islands
Known as Ăles Sanguinaires and Archipel des Sanguinaires in French, the Sanguinaires islands are an archipelago of four tiny rocky islands of magmatic origin composed of dark and light rocks, located at the entrance to the Gulf of Ajaccio, just off the coast of Corsica.
The islands are home to colonies of seabirds out of which more than 150 species inhabit Mezu Mare , the main island known for a scenic 19th-century lighthouse (Phare des Ăźles Sanguinaires).
While there, you can admire the most spectacular views of the Corsican coastline and the Mediterranean Sea from a couple of viewpoints, including Pointe de la Parata where you can visit Tour de la Parata ( La tour génoise de la Parata), a Genoese tower dating from the 16th century.
Translated into English, Ăles Sanguinaires means âThe Bloody Islandsâ due to their rich and mysterious past, so a good way to visit this place would be on a guided tour. Boat tours from Ajaccio are also a popular way of visiting this incredible place.

Ajaccio Corsica Port Guide
Ajaccio is the capital city of Corsica, an island of France located in the Mediterranean Sea. Ajaccioâs main claim to fame is that Napoleon Bonaparte was born here in 1769, but people visit this tranquil island during a Mediterranean cruise for much more than a history lesson on Bonaparte.
Corsica is an easy island to get around and a cruise to Ajaccio drops you off in a very walkable part of the island. Ajaccio is home to a French vibe that extends to the restaurants, cafes, and shops. The architecture has both a French vibe and leftover Italian influences from when the island was under rule by the Genovese. Youâll be able to experience both the French and Italian parts of Ajaccio as well as the elements that make it uniquely its own during an Ajaccio cruise port of call.

Culture & History of the Ajaccio Cruise Port
The original settlement in the area of Ajaccio was founded by the Romans and eventually came under Genoese power. In 1768, Corsica became part of France and has been ever since with the exception of a few years under British occupation in the late 18th century, and when it was occupied by the Axis powers during World War II.
Most of Ajaccioâs economy is made up of tourism. Some other industries on the island include aeronautical components manufacturing and a commercial sea port. It also serves as an administrative center and as the seat of a prefect and a bishopric.
With regular ferry service from ports along the south coast of France, such as Nice and Marseille, Ajaccio is an island getaway for many French citizens and is also a favorite vacation spot for other Europeans who flock to the island in the summer months for some warm weather, lush scenery, gorgeous beaches, and fresh island cuisine.
Youâll also find many hiking trails, much of which is due to the ecological culture of Corsica and that its people are very passionate about protecting the environment on the island. Because of this, the Parc Naturel RĂ©gional de Corse (PNRC)Â was established in 1972 and designated about one-third of the island as a protected area.
While in Corsica, youâll likely hear both French and Corsican being spoken. French is the official language, but some locals speak Corsican as well. Corsican is very similar to Italian, but is in danger of dying out due to a dwindling population of native speakers.

It is a relaxed rather than lively town and visitors come here to enjoy its wealth of cafes, restaurants and shops. The sights here mainly revolve around Napoleon, who was born here. The town's main sights are the magnificent cathedral where Napoleon was christened, the Bonaparte residence and numerous statues and street names related to his family.

The house in which Napoleon Bonaparte was born in 1769 is preserved, and his associations with the town are everywhere emphasized by street-names and statues.

Ajaccio, Corsica Cruise Port Guide Info
The city of Ajaccio is the cultural and political capital of the island of Corsica. Renowned as the birthplace of Napoleon Bonaparte, Ajaccioâs many squares and streets pay homage to the conqueror who never returned home. Located along Corsicaâs west coast, Ajaccio is a short drive away from hospitable beaches, soaring mountains, and unforgettable gorges. Visitors to the capital can walk along the quaint streets of its old town, stroll along the cityâs waterfront promenade, or venture out of the city and take in some of the islandâs unique natural beauty.Â
Corse, as itâs pronounced in French, is as geographically diverse as many large countries, claiming more than 600 miles of coastline, large pine forests, and a mountainous continental divide topped with winter ski resorts. Corsica is home to other natural wonders, including the Prunelli Gorges and Les Calanches, a colorful spectacle of red granite mountains that tower above the aquamarine waters of the Mediterranean. The mountains of Les Calanches are said to change color with the movement of the sun. Mediterranean cultures have praised the islandâs natural beauty for centuries. As early as the 6th century BC the Greeks referred to Corsica as âKallisteâ, the beautiful.
Places to visit
Cathedrale is Ajaccioâs 16th century cathedral located in the old city. The Cathedrale is dedicated to âLa Madonucciaâ, or Little Madonna, the cityâs patron saint who is thought to have protected the residents from black plague epidemics. It houses the painting by EugĂ©ne Delacroix, Virgin of the Sacred Heart. Located to the right of the main entrance is Napoleon Bonaparteâs baptismal font, where he was baptized in July of 1771.Â
Maison Bonaparte , located on the Rue de Letizia just off Rue Saint Charles, was the house where Napoleon was born and raised. A plaque above the entrance signifies Napoleonâs birth on August 15, 1769. On display are family portraits, period furniture and memorabilia.Â
HĂłtel de Ville is the Town Hall and is located on the Place du MarĂ©chal Foch. On the first floor is the MusĂ©e NapolĂ©on, which displays Napoleonâs baptism certificate, portraits of family members, and his collection of military medals.Â
Place du Foch is the cityâs finest square. Lined with palm trees and located along the harbor front, the square is an excellent place to absorb the commotion of the surrounding city. A statue of Napoleon wearing a Roman toga sits above a fountain of four lions and faces the Gulf of Ajaccio.
Palais Fesch was the home of Napoleonâs Uncle, Joseph Fesch, and houses the cityâs finest art museum. MusĂ©e Fesch contains a vast collection of Italian paintings, including works by Titian and Botticelli. Many of these works were spoils of war presented to Joseph Fesch by Napoleon. The Chapelle ImpĂ©riale is also located here and was the Bonapartesâ funeral chapel. Napoleonâs parents, Carlo and Letizia, and other family members are buried in the crypt. These venues are currently closed for refurbishment.Â
Place du Gaulle is one of the cityâs main squares (known locally as Place du Diamant) and its main statue pays homage to Napoleon Bonaparte. Dressed as the Emperor of Rome, Napoleon is surrounded by his four brothers. The Square offers excellent views of the sea.Â
Place dâAusterlitz is home to another statue dedicated to Corsicaâs most famous son. The memorial was erected in 1938 on a sight where Napolean liked to play as a child. It features Napoleon standing on a white pyramid in his most familiar pose.

AJACCIO, Corsica
The magnetism of the Mediterranean
As a French commune only seven miles from the Italian island of Sardinia, Corsica is a blend of French and Italian culture. The locals feel more Italian than French but enjoy francophile staples like boulangeries and charcuterie . The capital port city, Ajaccio, sits on the western side of a natural paradise with astonishing peaks and sprawling beaches.
Ajaccio’s small streets are steeped in Napoleonic history including Maison Bonaparte, the infamous commander’s ancestral home. Tucked away in the mountainous countryside you’ll find vineyards, endless hiking trails and wild boar (see charcuterie ). The Ajaccio Market displays fresh honey, organic wine and aromatherapy oils harvested from the hills. Ajaccio is a gateway to the beaches along Corsica’s shores and the forests, canyons and coves hidden in the Mediterranean mountains.

Veliky Novgorod Region: Why you need to see the jewel in Russiaâs âSilver Necklaceâ
Valday Iversky Monastery
For those of you making the trip to Veliky Novgorod Region, here is a list of unmissable activities and places of interest to really get you acquainted with the area and its history.
1. Learn the history of the Russian state in Veliky Novgorod
Of course, this city is unmissable; being the historical center of Russian statehood with the most ancient cathedral in the country, Sophia Cathedral, erected more than one thousand years ago, is a place of power for the whole of Russia. The city was the first-ever Russian settlement straddling both sides of a river (Volkhov), with the imposing Kremlin on one side, and medieval churches and buildings in the historic market district on the other.
Veliky Novgorod Kremlin
You can spice up the historical tour with various custom ones available, including the ancient cemetery at night or an alco-tour of the city (where you get to try local food and drink). For more information on the city excursions, you can go here .
2. Explore traditional folk craft at the workshop in Kresttsy settlement
Krestetsky stitching is a traditional Russian pattern - a folk craft that was born and developed in this area since the 1860-s. In Soviet times a small factory producing original unique linen products was built here. During Perestroika it was nearly closed due to the catastrophic economic crisis in the country. The risk for the Krestetsky stitch being completely forgotten was quite real. It is now a private factory and shop with guided tours.
NOVGOROD REGION, RUSSIA - JANUARY 24, 2019: Linen products of the Kresttsy Stitch clothing factory reviving and implementing the Kresttsy stitchery, a traditional local embroidery technique dating from the 1860s, in the village of Kresttsy, Novgorod Region
The pattern is very beautiful and difficult to master, so the possibility to observe the birth of a masterpiece is quite unique. Head over to the factory website for more details.
3. Meet the old believers in the village of Lyakova
Russia’s so-called ‘old believers’ did not accept the reformation of Orthodox Christianity in Russia in the 17th century, choosing instead to keep the old traditions in church services and rites, in defiance of the state’s persecution, lasting centuries. Old believers are divided into two groups, those who accept the church hierarchy and those who do not accept priests at all, pray in their own houses, and are governed by the community leaders. At this time there are about one million old believers scattered around the country with no official statistics to confirm that figure.
The old believers of Lyakova village will gladly welcome you in the old traditional peasant’s house, explaining how it was organized, and how life, in general, looked in the distant peasant past. This immersion is accompanied by a traditional dinner with borsch, salo (pork scratchings) and tea brewed in a traditional samovar. Book your ticket here .
4. Take the eco-trail at the Valdai national park
This national park is one of the largest specially protected natural areas in the European part of Russia. Russian president Vladimir Putin has one of his ‘datchas’ here. The territory of the park that covers an area of 159 thousand hectares includes several lakes (Borovno, Valdai, Velje, Seliger) as well as rare animals and plants.
Many nature lovers come here to hike, swim in the lakes and camp. This year the big eco-trail was opened. If you enjoy hiking, you can walk all 59 kilometers in five days, starting from the town of Valdai and covering around 12 kilometers a day. On the way, you will have all the facilities needed for camping and spending time in nature, from toilets to camping equipment and various amenities. Visit the park’s website for more info.
5. Visit the Valday Iversky Monastery
Located on an island 10 kilometers from the town of Valday, this monastery appears to be floating on the lake, when you look at it from a distance.
This is a male Orthodox monastery established in 1653. It was one of the three monasteries founded by the Patriarch Nikon (his reformation of the Orthodox Church in Russia and its unification with the Greek Orthodox church caused the split between ‘old’ and ‘new’ believers). The icon of the Mother of God – Iverskaya – is the treasure of the monastery and the reason for the active pilgrimage to this place.
6. Ring the bells at the Valday Museum of Bells
The region of Novgorod was the center of Russian statehood under the rule of the Rurikovich dynasty. After the collapse of Kievan Rus’, the region was an autonomous Russian state with a republican form of government, the symbol of which was a big Bell that every citizen could ring in order to gather the townspeople for a vote or resolve a community issue. So it is not by accident that the first-ever Museum of Bells in Russia was opened here.
Valday Museum of Bells
If you manage to get Nadezhda Yakovleva for a guide, you are guaranteed a one-person performance along with your historical facts, it’s fascinating and great fun as well.
7. Immerse yourself in 10th-century life at the settlement in Lyubytino village
This village of ancient Slavs has been restored in order to give tourists the impression of life centuries ago. Different types of Russian wooden cottages (izba) are represented here, as well as utility buildings and the ancient burial mounds, used by Slavs for burial rites.
Lyubytino is an urban locality (a work settlement) and the administrative center of Lyubytinsky District of Novgorod Oblast, Russia, located on the Msta River. Municipally, it serves as the administrative center of Lyubytinskoye Urban Settlement
For those seeking total immersion, there is the possibility of getting dressed in the traditional clothing of the time and have a photo session.
