Johannesburg, one of the largest cities on the continent and South Africa’s financial capital, is a stopover point for most visitors travelling in or out of Southern Africa. Many head straight out of town for a safari, but don't make that mistake. In just two days you can take in some of its rich and tumultuous history, fantastic arts and culture, and the developing foodie scene.

Ease into things with a quiet breakfast in one of Jo'burg’s leafy suburbs. Croft & Co , a coffee shop on Tyrone Ave in pleasant Parkview, is a great choice. Croft serves some of the best scrambled eggs and sausages in town, service is friendly, and wi-fi is fast. Grab a table outside if the weather is nice, which it nearly always is. Catch a taxi to nearby Rosebank and board the hop-on, hop-off CitySightseeing Bus . The double-decker red bus is a particularly effective way to get around in Johannesburg, where public transport is tricky for tourists to figure out. The top of the bus is a perfect vantage point for photographing the busy downtown streets.

Hop off the bus at Constitution Hill , one of the most significant historical sites. Once the site of a military fort that later became a notorious prison, Constitution Hill is now home to a museum, a restaurant and South Africa ’s highest court. The museum tells a powerful story about what life was like at the Old Fort Prison, where many prominent anti-apartheid activists were held. The court is always open to the public, and is worth visiting for the beautiful works of art on display in the hallways. And be sure to take a walk around the ramparts of the Old Fort, which has beautiful views of the city.

Braamfontein , which is adjacent to Constitution Hill and also a stop on the CitySightseeing Bus route, has several good options for lunch. Try 86 Public , a pizzeria at the corner of Juta St and Melle St, or the Immigrant Bar on the ground floor of the Once in Joburg hostel. African Flavour Books on Melle St is an independently owned bookstore with an excellent selection of South African and African titles. Braamfontein also has several hip clothing shops and quality art galleries, including Stevenson Gallery and the Wits Art Museum .

Be sure to make time to ride the bus across town to the Apartheid Museum , which offers the most comprehensive history of South Africa’s apartheid era. A visit can be overwhelming and very emotional; most visitors need at least two hours to take enough of it in.

Melville , a suburb just northwest of downtown, offers some of Johannesburg’s best nightlife. There are many popular restaurants to choose from, including the Lucky Bean and the Great Eastern Food Bar . Drinking holes also abound – try Hell’s Kitchen for whiskey and beer, or Mooteebar for exotic, South-African-themed cocktails.

Have breakfast at the Salvation Café in 44 Stanley , an industrial complex converted into high-end dining and retail space. Allow some time to browse the shops, which have plenty of authentic South African gifts, clothing and souvenirs. Next, enjoy a walking tour through the Johannesburg central business district (these are best booked at least several days in advance).  Past Experiences offers a range of cultural and public-art-focused tours, and JoburgPlaces ’ tours provide excellent historical context on the city.

Spend a few hours in the trendy Maboneng on the eastern side of the city, where artists’ studios, shops, cafés, and theatres have transformed abandoned warehouse spaces . Grab a plate of cheap but delicious Ethiopian Food at James XVI Ethiopian or a burrito at Mama Mexicana . Street vendors and musicians set up shop along Fox St on weekends, and Market on Main , which is popular for food, kicks off every Sunday at Arts on Main . Take a quick taxi ride up Commissioner St to the Carlton Centre, Africa’s tallest building, and ride the lift up 50 floors to the Top of Africa . The windows may be smudged, but this top-level viewing deck provides incredible 360-degree views of Johannesburg and the surrounding areas. Gaze out over Soweto to the southwest, Hillbrow to the northeast, and the Magaliesburg mountains in the far north. Note that pick-pocketers and muggers frequent the area around the Carlton Centre, so be aware of your belongings. Ask a security guard on the ground level of the building for directions to the Top of Africa lift.

Make a booking (essential) for dinner at Urbanologi , a spacious, beautifully designed restaurant in the city’s newly revived Ferreirasdorp neighbourhood. Urbanologi serves innovative small plates and adjoins the  Mad Giant Brewery , a key player in South Africa's evolving craft beer scene . Watch a play at the historic Market Theatre in Newtown  – it was Jo'burg’s first integrated theatre during the apartheid era, and continues to be a leader in groundbreaking, innovative small-scale productions.

Where to Stay

Once in Joburg is an upscale hostel, or poshtel, centrally located downtown in Braamfontein. Dorm rooms for up to four people are an option, as are well as en-suite singles and doubles. The hostel staff offers many fun group activities and there is a restaurant/bar on site. The Four Seasons Hotel the Westcliff is Johannesburg’s best luxury hotel, with two restaurants, a spa and the added benefit of being just a ten-minute drive from downtown. Melville has dozens of popular guesthouses and B&Bs, including, Motel Mi Pi Chi , Ginnegap , and the Lucky Bean Guest House .

Choose your ultimate wildlife tour and let us do the rest for you. We can even throw your mother in law to the lions if you want. A real South African Safari is a tour of contrasts.

But what else do you call a vacation where you will happily slalom between a herd of breeding elephants in the Pilanesberg , lions stalking an impala in the Kruger , traditional meals around a camp fire, stunning savannah scenery and fresh Bushveld air. The challenge is choosing the amount of time you have to experience this magic. Maybe you only have a day spare. Or maybe you have a week. Whatever your situation, we have a recommended safari tours for you to choose from.

There is an abundance of reasons to visit South Africa-safaris , dazzling Cape Town, the incredible garden route to name a few. But what really blows travelers minds is the abundance of natural splendor, exotic wildlife and overall experience of an authentic South African Safaris . But of course, there are millions of tour operator and option available on the net. Where is the best area to go? What is the best time to go? Ade there any safari tour options from Johannesburg ? Will I see animals?

We are going to try and answer a whole whack of your questions in this article, specifically focusing on tours leaving from Johannesburg . And why is that? Because that is where our main airport is. And Johannesburg is also the closest major city to the main safari areas of South Africa.  We will also recommend a whole bunch of tours that will include day tours as well as multi day tours to some of the iconic wildlife reserves. These include the Pilanesberg and the Kruger National Park .

Why embark on Johannesburg safaris tour?

80% of all international flights land at Johannesburg . It makes sense to start your safari from Johannesburg as you do not need to fly to another city. Johannesburg is also the gateway to most of the major safaris tours in South Africa . Two of the most popular destinations are the Kruger National Park and the Pilanesberg. The Kruger is about a 5-hour drive from Johannesburg . The Pilanesberg is about a 2-hour drive from Johannesburg . From a logistical point of view, these are the most accessible game reserves.

What is a safari park and where do we recommend you go?

Traditionally a safari park has been classified as a natural area where wild animals roam freely. There are many parks in South Africa that offer access to the public for the viewing of wild animals. The most popular by far due to their accessibility and distance from Johannesburg is the Pilanesberg and Kruger . Although there are many other safari parks, a lot of them are either private reserves or are too small to allow free roaming animals. Both the Pilanesberg and Kruger are National Parks that allow access to the public. They are also massive. Which means they can sustain free roaming animals that include elephants, rhino, zebra, wildebeest and a host of many other indigenous species.

Recommended Johannesburg safaris tour

We have divided our recommendations into 3 options based on how much time you have and the proximity to Johannesburg . No use going to the Kruger Park for 1 day as it takes 5 hours just to drive there. Whereas the Pilanesberg is only 2 hours from Johannesburg .

Half day safari excursion options

This is the perfect tour for travelers who have limited time. It is a perfect layover tour for those stuck at the airport and are looking at a wildlife experience. The total tour duration is 5 hours from pick up to drop off.

On this tour we pick up clients from any location within the Johannesburg area. We then take the 75-minute drive through the foothills of the Magaliesberg mountains to the Askari private game reserve. Upon arrival, we meet up with the ranger, have a quick cup of coffee, and transfer to our open-air game vehicle. We then spend 3 hours exploring the reserve in search for wild animals from elephant, rhino, lion, zebra, giraffe, wildebeest and many other species indigenous to the area.

1-day safari from Johannesburg

Another perfect safari tour option if your time is limited. It is also the perfect option for travelers who are on vacation in Johannesburg and have decided to maximize their vacation by embarking on multiple day tours in order to cover all aspects of what the city has to offer. Our recommendation for a 1-day safari would be to the Pilanesberg National Park . Situated 2 hours’ drive from Johannesburg , this is the perfect way to experience an authentic South African Safaris .

The reserve is home to the Big 5 (Lion, Rhino, Elephant, Leopard and African Buffalo) as well as an abundance of other free roaming wild animals. These include zebra, giraffe, wildebeest, warthog, hippo and antelope. You will spend about 6 hours with our ranger on a ‘game drive’ in search of your favorite animal. And just for the record…the game we are referring to here are animals, not chess or monopoly. Pick up is at 6am from any location in Johannesburg , returning by 6pm.

2 day or 3-day Pilanesberg safari from Johannesburg

If you still have limited time and would really like to experience an overnight safari and all its magical wonders, then the 2-day safari to the Pilanesberg is your best option. We do not recommend that you book a 2-day safari to the Kruger Park . It is way too far away to maximize the experience. It takes about 6 hours just to drive there. So, you can imagine how little time is left for a proper safari . So best to stick to the overnight Pilanesberg option. On this tour, guests enjoy over 12 hours of game viewing with our ranger. And of course, you get to spend the night. We have various tour options to choose from depending on your level of comfort. We offer tented camping experiences, to luxury lodge experiences. Take a look at our selection below.

Multi day safari to the Kruger from Johannesburg Safaris

The multi day safari tours are the most popular experiences for travelers looking for nature, wildlife and tranquility. The best way to truly take in the magic of the Bush is to indulge in a multi-day tour. Sometimes 1 or 2 days is just not enough. Isak Dinesen wrote “when you have caught the rhythm of Africa, you find that it’s the same in all her music”. It’s not all about the singing and dancing, but the rhythms of the Bush: the sound of the Kruger as it wakes every morning, the roar of lion or the thunder of zebra hooves on the open plains.

Enjoy the thrill of epic game drives in search of your favorite animal with our experience’s ranger guide. Come and get rhythm. Experience a multi-day safari in the Kruger . There a few options to choose from depending on your time. All our tours are fully guided include everything from food, transfers, accommodation, game drives and our really dry jokes. Check out our tour options below:

From Johannesburg, South Africa’s biggest city, you don’t need to go far to get out into the bush. There are plenty of safari parks and game reserves near Johannesburg, all within a four-hour drive of the city. Day-trippers can head to reserves just an hour’s drive away, whilst those looking to spend a few days on safari can go further afield.

Aside from the fact that these game reserves near Johannesburg are so close to the city, one of the best things about them is that they’re all in malaria-free areas, so there’s no need for medication. Spot the Big Five, hundreds of bird species and countless other animals, all in our selection of reserves and safari parks near Johannesburg.

Described by geologists as the Pilanesberg Alkaline Ring Complex, the Pilanesberg is one of the 3 alkaline volcanoes in the world and is exceptionally old. At its zenith, the volcano towered to 7000 meters in height , rivaling even Africa's highest peak, Mount Kilimanjaro, in grandeur

SAFE VIEWING OF ELEPHANTS

An elephant weighs up to seven tons so it can inflict serious damage to vehicles or cause loss of life. Show respect for elephants at all times. Do not wave, hoot or shout at elephants . look out for temporal gland flow. Visible fluid flowing from the gland between the eye and ear hole is a distinct sign of stress and anxiety . always keep a safe distance between you and elephants at all times . don't block the path of elephants when they approach the road . leave enough space so they can cross without splitting up the herd
