Stonehenge poses more questions than answers, making it one of the most mysterious prehistoric monuments in the world. And because of its proximity to London, the famous landmark makes for a popular day trip from the city . Organized Stonehenge tours from London typically include round-trip transportation in an air-conditioned coach, as well as visits to other nearby landmarks, such as the Avebury stone circles, Bath or the Cotswolds.

These tours from London, evaluated by U.S. News using both expert opinion and traveler sentiment, offer some of the best ways to experience Stonehenge.

The English Bus – Stonehenge, Bath & A Secret Place

Price: From 134 pounds (around $170) per person Duration: 12 hours

For adventurous travelers who want to see Stonehenge and Bath, and don't mind a little mystery, The English Bus's full-day tour offers both. Limited to 16 people, the tour departs from London in a Mercedes minibus, complete with panoramic windows and a glass roof. As you drive through the countryside, you'll enjoy live, in-depth commentary from your expert guide before arriving in Stonehenge. After exploring Stonehenge, you'll head to Bath to enjoy lunch and time to roam on your own or join an optional guided tour. Your final stop is a "secret" destination selected by your tour guide. Reviewers praise the knowledgeable, humorous guides and particularly recommend this tour for its small size and luxurious transportation.

Tours depart from central London daily. Ticket pricing does not include food or Stonehenge tickets. You can buy entry tickets to Stonehenge on-site for about 20 to 25 pounds (around $25 to $31) depending on the time of the year when visiting or online in advance for a slight discount. Other tours offered by The English Bus visit the Cotswolds, Canterbury and more.

Stonehenge tour bus from Salisbury or private guide comparison

Independent travel to stonehenge using salisbury as your gateway.

The Stonehenge tour bus from Salisbury

To make an independent trip to Stonehenge from London using public transport, then Salisbury with the nearest railway station to Stonehenge acts as your gateway.

Salisbury is 9 miles from Stonehenge. There are no public scheduled buses but a Stonehenge tour bus run on a hop-on, hop-off principle shuttles between Salisbury train station and Stonehenge and also visits local places of interest, Old Sarum and Salisbury Cathedral.

There are frequent trains from London's Waterloo station, normally two trains an hour to Salisbury. Scheduled travel time is about 80-90 minutes.

Salisbury Cathedral

Salisbury itself is also well worth a visit in its own right.

The city of Salisbury is an old medieval market town. You can still see many of the medieval wooden fronted buildings in the centre and the market still operates twice a week.

The big attraction at Salisbury is Salisbury Cathedral within which is an original of the Magna Carta.

The Stonehenge tour bus - from Salisbury rail or bus stations

Stonehenge from Salisbury

The Stonehenge tour bus pictured above is the only regular shared transport to Stonehenge itself. It normally runs at least hourly and more frequently in the summer months. The Stonehenge tour bus also allows you to stop over at Old Sarum , which is worthwhile, as well as an option to visit Salisbury Cathedral.

The journey itself is quite scenic. The Stonehenge tour bus starts from Salisbury Rail Station and also picks up at Salisbury Bus Station.

Hop-on, hop-off

The bus works on a hop on, hop off principle. You can spend as long as you like at Stonehenge or Old Sarum, you do not have to ride on a particular schedule.

Buses depart Salisbury Station hourly from 10am daily stopping broadly in-line with the closing time of Stonehenge. You could not use this service for Special Access visits outside normal opening hours of Stonehenge.

Check opening times

It is worth checking the opening times of the Stonehenge Visitor Centre and Old Sarum before travelling. Opening times for Old Sarum are seasonal and there are  occasional  events at Stonehenge which result in variations to opening times.

Priority access at Stonehenge for bus ticket holders

Your ticket gives you priority access at Stonehenge, meaning you do not have to worry about booking a particular time slot as you would do normally.

The buses are double deck buses, so you get a great view of the countryside too. You also get a very informative commentary as you go along about Stonehenge, Salisbury and much else besides.

Purchase tickets on-line or on the day

You can purchase tickets both on-line in advance or from the bus itself on the day. There are three ticket options.

1.Tour bus straight to Stonehenge

2. Tour bus with admission to Stonehenge and Old Sarum

3. Stonehenge, Old Sarum and donation for Salisbury Cathedral.

Visit 3 attractions

Visiting all three attractions is very much a rewarding full day out. If doing all three attractions in one day, the suggested amount of time to allow is a minimum of five hours. At the end of the day do explore the centre of town and ideally find a pub or restaurant to relax before a late train out.

If you’re touring the UK and are based in London, then you simply cannot miss Stonehenge off your itinerary. This ancient site is thought to date back to prehistoric times, though scientists can only guess exactly when and how the standing bluestones were placed on Salisbury Plain.

Taking a trip to Stonehenge from London by train means catching a train at London Waterloo station. There are over 35 trains per day and the journey time is about one hour and 25 minutes each way. Some services are direct.

You can also depart from Clapham Junction if that’s more convenient. Remember you’ll also need to travel from your hotel to one of those stations. London Waterloo is on the Northern, Bakerloo, Jubilee and Waterloo and City lines, and lies just south of the River Thames. Clapham Junction is further down the main line.

Once you reach Salisbury you’ll have to make another journey to get to Stonehenge, as it’s around ten miles away from there. You can choose between catching a tour bus operated by a private company or taking a taxi. The former takes about 25 minutes and the latter about 15 minutes.

While it’s possible to visit Stonehenge from London by train, you can’t get there without involving an additional taxi or bus journey, and it’s difficult to predict exactly what a cab will cost unless you don’t mind phoning in advance to ask.

  • At-a-glance: Bus from London Victoria to Salisbury bus station (3 hours & 15 min+); around 5 coaches per day; + bus (25 mins) or taxi (15 mins) to Stonehenge

You could also arrange your own Stonehenge to London tour by bus. National Express coaches operate from Victoria Coach Station in London, which is about 300 metres from the tube station. That is on the Circle, District and Victoria lines.

This is the most time-consuming way to get from L (London) to S (Stonehenge). In fact the trip again takes you to Salisbury, from where you’ll again need to catch a tour bus or taxi to reach Stonehenge on Salisbury Plain. The drive will take about 15 or 25 minutes once you’re in the cab or on board the bus.

Tickets for National Express coaches are usually cheap, but really that’s the only factor in their favour. The journey time from Victoria to Salisbury is at least 3 hours and 15 minutes, and then you have another trip to make by taxi or local tour bus.

  • At-a-glance: Use postcode SP4 7DE for Stonehenge (85 miles, parking free with entry ticket)

At a distance of around 85 miles each way, travel to Stonehenge from London by car can be quicker than public transport. The outward and return trip should take around one-and-a-half hours each, subject to traffic conditions (and finding your way without getting lost)!

There is a car park at Stonehenge. This is operated by English Heritage , and they may ask you to pay for parking if you are a non-member who hasn’t pre-booked a ticket. Once you pay for entry, this charge should be refunded. If you’ll have trouble walking from the car park to the stones, a visitor shuttle bus is provided.

Don’t forget that you’ll need to budget for petrol and the cost of car rental if you plan to drive to Stonehenge from London and don’t have access to a vehicle already. Parking in London can also be a big problem – and very expensive even where it is available. Central London also has a congestion charge.

Getting out of and back into London can also be tricky for those unfamiliar with the city, and traffic levels around the outskirts tend to be notoriously high.

  • At-a-glance: Organised day trips from London to Stonehenge include return travel.

You can also opt to include other locations – see below for full details.

Moscow Metro

The Moscow Metro Tour is included in most guided tours’ itineraries. Opened in 1935, under Stalin’s regime, the metro was not only meant to solve transport problems, but also was hailed as “a people’s palace”. Every station you will see during your Moscow metro tour looks like a palace room. There are bright paintings, mosaics, stained glass, bronze statues… Our Moscow metro tour includes the most impressive stations best architects and designers worked at - Ploshchad Revolutsii, Mayakovskaya, Komsomolskaya, Kievskaya, Novoslobodskaya and some others.

What is the kremlin in russia?

The guide will not only help you navigate the metro, but will also provide you with fascinating background tales for the images you see and a history of each station.

And there some stories to be told during the Moscow metro tour! The deepest station - Park Pobedy - is 84 metres under the ground with the world longest escalator of 140 meters. Parts of the so-called Metro-2, a secret strategic system of underground tunnels, was used for its construction.

During the Second World War the metro itself became a strategic asset: it was turned into the city's biggest bomb-shelter and one of the stations even became a library. 217 children were born here in 1941-1942! The metro is the most effective means of transport in the capital.

There are almost 200 stations 196 at the moment and trains run every 90 seconds! The guide of your Moscow metro tour can explain to you how to buy tickets and find your way if you plan to get around by yourself.
