For most Americans, summer means one thing—beaches. But if you’re the type of person that can only take so much sun and swimming, remember that plenty of sandy U.S. spots have a lot more to offer than just waves and sunbathing. Let this be the year you expand your sun-filled horizons to include hot cultural spots, wander-worthy museums, and tantalizing culinary scenes.

Here are 10 cities for beachgoers looking for a little bit extra.

10: Long Beach, Washington

Long Beach Peninsula, Long Beach, California

Pacific Coast cliffs and cool white waves are staples of Washington’s breathtaking beaches, and Long Beach ’s surroundings make it a win-win for sea adventures and culture-loving escapees alike.

Long Beach lives up to its name, with 28 miles of seacoast lined by boardwalks, sand dunes, and summer festivals , not to mention the quirky pastimes of downtown. Oddities at Marsh’s Free Museum, the World Kite Hall of Fame and kite festival, arcades, a Cranberry Museum, and Pacific Avenue’s slew of seafood restaurants are just a small sampling of this eclectic city’s sights. Discover live music after a long day at the beach, fit in some nearby zip-line adventures , or catch a show at the PAPA theater .

9: Newport, Rhode Island

Gooseneck Cove, Newport, Rhode Island

Pristine beaches, cliff trails, and colonial history coexist harmoniously in Rhode Island’s sea-front city of Newport, 35 miles south of the tiny state’s understated capital. Newport is rife with 19th-century mansions-turned-museums that were once summer “cottages” to many old-money American elite— Vanderbilts and Kennedys included. The original Great Gatsby film adaptation was also filmed at Newport’s famous Rosecliff Mansion .

Newport’s Second Beach has plenty of tidal pools, warm waves, nature trails, and sand dunes to keep swimmers and surfers busy. A jaunt on the nearby Cliff Walk or a tour at one of the many local mansions can break up your beach day. Rent bikes to explore scenic Bellevue Avenue in style, or head toward the wharf for some harbor-side seafood and drinks.

13 Stylish Swimsuit Cover-ups for Your Next Beach Vacation

8: Chicago, Illinois

Beach in the foreground of the Chicago skyline

The Chicagoan shores of Lake Michigan are teeming with visitors and locals alike every summer. The perfect pit stop after gallivanting the sweltering city, Oak Street Beach is my personal favorite spot for sweeping skyline views, beach volleyball, bike rentals, or simply wading in the waves.

Don’t write off Oak Street if you don’t consider yourself a lake person—aside from the fresh water, you’d be hard-pressed to find many differences between massive Lake Michigan’s beaches and coastal ocean beaches. There are plenty of waves, abundant sand, and beach games to tire you out if Chicago’s museums, breweries, and parks didn’t already.

The 8 Best Beaches Along the Great Lakes

7: Clearwater, Florida

Resorts and condos at Clearwater Beach, Florida

Arguably the best beach in the country, Clearwater Beach also happens to be flanked by the Tampa Bay area’s paradisiacal happenings and some world-class art. Home to the three miles of restaurant-lined, crystal-blue shallows that make up one of TripAdvisors top beaches in the United States , Clearwater is also a place to find hatching sea turtles and rehabilitating dolphins at the local Marine Aquarium. Throw in a massive performing arts center , the largest collection of Salvador Dali art outside of Spain, and Pier 60 —the perfect spot to watch the sun set over the Gulf–and you have one of the best beach towns in the country.

6: Portland, Maine

Portland Head Lighthouse, Portland, Maine

If the only Portland on your radar is in Oregon and not Maine, it’s time to reevaluate. Maine’s Casco Bay houses this hidden gem of a port city, adorned with scenic fishing ports, historic Victorian architecture, and underrated art museums and breweries.

Sandy East End and Willard beaches welcome summer-loving Mainers with open arms after every harsh winter, and the lively college town’s shopping, dining, and incredible museums keep tourists busy even during the winter months. Head here in the temperate weather to experience the best of both: kayaking and swimming by day, history and culture by evening.

The 15 Least-Crowded Beaches in the United States

5: Orange Beach, Alabama

Orange Beach, Alabama

Southern destinations are often frequented for decadent food , lively music scenes, and year-round warm weather—but Orange Beach, Alabama, makes a case for adding beaches to that list. Tourism to Gulf Shores is increasing as the region adopts more and more food festivals, breweries, and raved-about restaurants . White sand beaches and bright blue waves beckon just as much as annual art, music, and beer festivals .

4: San Diego, California

Mission Beach, San Diego, California

Another truly urban beach getaway, San Diego is popular with visitors year-round thanks to its perpetually sunny skies and famous beach spots like seal-dotted La Jolla Cove. You can escape the summer crowds by heading to North County’s Carlsbad Beach , which has kid-friendly tidal pools, towering palm trees, waves perfect for surfing, and ample parking. North County is about 40 minutes north of downtown, and largely free of tourists.

San Diego, of course, also has plenty to offer beyond the beach, from nature reserves, kayaking, and national parks, to world-class restaurants and an open-air Shakespearean theater . Don’t forget about surfing (perhaps the most quintessentially San Diegan pastime) … and fish tacos .

3: Kihei, Maui, Hawaii

Kamaole Sand Beach III, Kihei, Maui, Hawaii

If you’re going to do Hawaii, do it right. Nothing is as innately Hawaiian as the untouched parts of Maui—and plenty of them coexist with bustling tourism and local-filled restaurants in Kihei.

Rent a beachside condo in Kihei during low season (fall) for your best shot at getting the soft sands and calm snorkeling waves to yourself. Take up surfing in classes taught by locals, paddleboard alongside sea turtles, test the array of pints at Maui Brewing Company , or splurge on a Maui Flight Academy air tour . The island’s natural wonders meld with a lively night scene, and both rival much of what the overrun Big Island has to offer.

2: Provincetown, Massachusetts

Provincetown, Cape Code, Massachusetts

Cape Cod, too, gets overrun with visitors every summer. But for good reason: Chilly New England deserves these sunny beaches and sleepy beach towns. But one popular destination at the tip of the Cape in particular is anything but sleepy.

Provincetown is many things—boutiquey, beachy, an arts haven—but it’s especially gay friendly, which makes it a hot spot for Pride month every year. Head there in June for block parties, bustling bars, and club events.

Year-round, visitors peruse Commercial Street’s shops and stroll Race Point and Herring Cove beaches. The local Art Association and Museum , boat tours, and historic lighthouses are must-sees, but beware of the cold Atlantic water that’s characteristic of the Cape’s tip. Regardless, the arts and culture are worth the chilly swimming.

The 17 Best East Coast Family Vacations

1: Carmel by the Sea, California

Ribera Beach, Carmel by the Sea, California

Few beach towns are as storybook-scenic as Carmel by the Sea—California’s answer to centuries-old artists communities like England’s Stratford-upon-Avon. Many of the picture-perfect historic buildings here, like Carmel Mission , date back hundreds of years. Galleries, theaters, and cozy fine-dining restaurants appropriately define its narrow streets.

Carmel even famously has its fair share of celebrities serve as mayor , including actor turned Hollywood director Clint Eastwood. Rumor has it Doris Day once led efforts to make the city dog-friendly. You won’t find any chain restaurants in Carmel, and you only need head to one of its unique upscale eateries to realize why.

17 Best Beach Towns in the U.S. With Laid-back Vibes and Stunning Coastal Views

From coast to coast, these are the best beach towns in the U.S.

Anne Olivia Bauso is a travel writer and hotel expert based in New York City. She has written hundreds of hotel reviews, from 5-star Ritz-Carlton properties to treehouse eco-resorts in the jungle.

beach tourism city

Come summertime, the longing for sea breezes and salt water rushing over your toes is powerful stuff. When the pull of the beach is strong, you may just adopt an "any beach will do" mentality. But there's a big case to be made for seeking out the best beach towns in the U.S., where an easygoing vibe and beautiful coastal views make for an intoxicating combination. For beach lovers who prefer quaint cottages, custard stands, and historic wharves over beachfront go-karts and megaresorts, these are some of the best beach towns the American shoreline has to offer.

Block Island, Rhode Island

A one-hour ferry ride from mainland Rhode Island , Block Island combines a quaint downtown area, breathtaking coastal scenery, and a rolling green interior crisscrossed with low fieldstone walls, reminiscent of a remote British Isle. The village-like Old Harbor has Victorian bed-and-breakfasts, quirky boutiques, and the island's few grocery stores (there's not a chain to be found). It's all about the simple pleasures here: misty mornings, beach walks, ice cream on the front porch, bicycle rides, and afternoon hikes to mighty bluffs overlooking the Atlantic.

Ocracoke, North Carolina

Before it was permanently settled in the 1700s, this tiny island was a hideout for pirates, the infamous Blackbeard among them. Today, the same remoteness that once drew buccaneers lures tens of thousands of yearly visitors. Accessible only by boat or ferry — this is one of the most distant of North Carolina's Outer Banks — Ocracoke offers big sandy beaches coupled with wild nature. Around the harbor are slushy stands, surf shops, family-friendly barbecue restaurants and oyster bars, and old-fashioned hotels (cottage rentals and beach camping are popular alternatives).

Friday Harbor, San Juan Islands, Washington

Catch the ferry or ride a seaplane into this sweet island village near Seattle. This isn't the kind of beach for arcade games on the boardwalk or rummy drinks under a palapa, but rather natural-feeling beaches, independent bookstores and restaurants, and even a lavender farm with views of the Olympic Mountains . Hike along the rocky coastline and look for whales and other wildlife (foxes, bald eagles, dolphins) at Lime Kiln Point State Park , where a 1919 lighthouse keeps watch. If seeing an orca pod in the wild inspires you, a trip to The Whale Museum will tell you all about the marine mammals who call San Juan Islands' waters home.

Edisto, South Carolina

Edisto Island is perfect for a back-to-basics beach vacation. On the itinerary: exploring Botany Bay, the island's one-of-a-kind nature reserve covered in driftwood and seashells; hiking or biking through live oak and palmettos to a 4,000-year-old Native American shell mound; meeting turtles and gators at the serpentarium; and swinging by roadside farmers markets for fresh produce, local Marsh Hen Mill grits, and Key lime pie. (Have one meal at Whaley's , a former gas station serving fried oysters and crab cakes since the '40s.)

Carmel-by-the-Sea, California

Lauren Breedlove/Travel + Leisure

By the early 1900s, charming Carmel-by-the-Sea was already the preferred getaway for creative types. Even through decades of tourism and celeb-induced limelight (Jack London was an early fan, and Clint Eastwood is just one of its former thespian mayors), Carmel-by-the-Sea has held fast to its small-town charm . The small, walkable downtown feels out of a fairy tale; its streets are cobbled and lined with shops, galleries, wine-driven restaurants, magical 1920s cottages, and tucked-away gardens and courtyards. To see Carmel's wind-chiseled cliffs and lovely white-sand coves, head to the town's Point Lobos State Natural Reserve , Carmel River State Beach , and Garrapata State Park .

Sanibel Island, Florida

Kelly Griffin/Travel + Leisure

Located on Florida's Gulf of Mexico side, about 130 miles due north of Key West, Sanibel Island is a beachy paradise for nature lovers. The enchanting, off-the-grid-feeling island has an east-west orientation that makes it a natural repository for seashells, and collecting specimens on Bowman's Beach is a favorite visitor pastime (official name: the Sanibel Stoop). A huge chunk of the island is protected, including a wildlife refuge perfect for bird-watching, kayaking, fishing, and picnicking. In terms of Sanibel commerce, there are a few local spots for custard and seafood and a local farmers market in the summer.

Port Aransas, Texas

Clear across the Gulf of Mexico from Sanibel is Port Aransas , the self-proclaimed "Fishing Capital of Texas." Lovers of the sport have 18 miles of beach and chartered deep-sea excursions at the ready. Beyond fishing, there's swimming, kayaking, parasailing, golfing, dolphin spotting, and birding to enjoy. Port Aransas' marshy nature preserves and estuaries are havens for hundreds of bird species, including pelicans, ducks, and the majestic roseate spoonbill, the destination's flamingo-pink official bird. Padre Island National Seashore is a worthy side trip; the undeveloped barrier island offers 66 miles of pristine beach, rolling sand dunes, and lagoon-like waters.

Cannon Beach, Oregon

What put Cannon Beach on the map is distinctive Haystack Rock, a basalt tower shooting 235 feet from the water's edge. With Haystack and many other stacks scattered around the shoreline, Cannon Beach is one of the most striking and recognizable destinations in the state. Miles of beach offer a peaceful backdrop for swimming, walking, kayaking, and bird-watching. Time your visit to Hug Point (framed by cliffs and misty old-growth woods) for low tide, when the ocean recedes to reveal caves and marine life. Forward-thinking regulations have kept overdevelopment and chain commerce in check, helping the town preserve its under-the-radar vibe.

Capitola, California

Escape crowded Santa Cruz for this colorful village with a beautiful bay and delightful waterfront scene. The town is very lively and colorful, with brightly painted houses, a historic wharf, and village shops. Food and drink options range from local pubs and taco joints to the multilevel Shadowbrook Restaurant , a wine-centric restaurant built from local redwood into a steep hillside overlooking Soquel Creek.

Bald Head Island, North Carolina

The marshy coastlines of the Carolinas and Georgia are dotted with pretty, peaceful beach communities (see: Edisto), and North Carolina's Bald Head Island is one of the dreamiest. The East Coast's northernmost subtropical island, Bald Head is largely protected maritime forest, with beach rentals, nature trails, a few cafes, and miles of spectacular, unspoiled beaches. Cars aren't allowed, so guests zip around in golf carts — and on bike, in kayaks, and on their own two feet. Between beach walks, bike rides, and board games on the porch, travelers can visit the state's oldest standing lighthouse (named Old Baldy) and meet native loggerhead sea turtles at Bald Head Island Conservancy .

St. Augustine, Florida

Not every beach vacation coincides with an Old World atmosphere. In centuries-old St. Augustine, culture and coastal nature go hand in hand. The Spanish-founded town is home to peaceful beaches, historic sites, like Castillo de San Marcos (the country's oldest standing masonry fort), and quaint European-style shopping streets, such as St. George and Aviles. Other must-sees include the St. Augustine Pirate & Treasure Museum , the local alligator zoo, and St. Augustine Distillery , open daily for tours and artisanal tastings.

Ogunquit, Maine

The Algonquin translation for Ogunquit is "beautiful place by the sea," and the town more than lives up to its moniker. Ogunquit's wide, white-sand beaches are far from the typical rocky Maine shoreline. For a taste of classic coastal Maine , walk the clifftop Marginal Way, which boasts incredible sights and sounds of the pounding Atlantic. Explore the cute town on foot or courtesy of a summer trolley and check out its theaters, art galleries, antique shops, lobster shacks, wine bars, and breakfast cafes — and don't leave without ordering a big stack of fluffy Maine blueberry pancakes!

Cape May, New Jersey

Set on the southernmost edge of New Jersey, Cape May is a perfect destination for beach lovers with a penchant for history and architecture. The town is filled to the brim with textbook Victorians — cottages, hotels, summer homes — and the vibe is appropriately vintage. Stroll the brick sidewalks (or take a horse-drawn carriage tour) to see colorful gingerbread architecture and poke in the mom-and-pop shops for saltwater taffy and local finds. Even if you don't stay at The Chalfonte Hotel , the town's oldest hotel, plan a fried-chicken dinner on the wraparound porch with live music.

San Clemente, California

Lovely Spanish Colonial Revival architecture, sandy cliff-backed beaches, and coastal trails are all part of this Orange County town's appealing package. The gorgeous San Clemente coast is a mecca for swimmers, longboarders, campers, and hikers. The town itself has farmers markets, breweries, casual eateries, and an all-around mellow vibe that's a nice contrast to some neighboring Southern California's best beach towns .

Newport, Rhode Island

This New England seaport shot to prominence when it became the chosen summer playground for early American titans of industry (think: the Astors, Morgans, and Vanderbilts, whose Newport "cottage" is The Breakers, a 70-room Italian Renaissance estate). Stroll past the legendary home and other historic Gilded-Age mansions on Newport's Cliff Walk as it winds over coastal bluffs. Continue till Easton's Beach, a family-friendly stretch of sand known as First Beach to locals. (Hit the lobster roll stand and the lemonade truck if refreshments are in order.) On the harbor side, brick sidewalks and colonial merchant buildings define Bowen's Wharf, where you can eat oysters to your heart's content. Newport's thriving music scene is anchored by the famous Newport Jazz and Newport Folk festivals.

Solana Beach, California

Yes, the best beach towns run up and down the California coastline, but Solana Beach stands out for its utter lack of pretension. Natural beauty is the name of the game in this laidback San Diego County town, where the best activities are simply sunning on the lovely beaches, exploring rugged hiking areas with ocean and lagoon views (Annie's Canyon Trail is a favorite), trying homemade tamales and chocolate halvah at the farmers market , and enjoying casual food and drinks at Solana's seafood restaurants, pancake houses, and wineries.

Provincetown, Massachusetts

Perched on the tip of Cape Cod , this sleepy town with only about 3,500 year-round residents swells to six times that during the high season. Provincetown pulls in its bohemian-spirited summer crowd with a winning combo of stunning natural scenery, 19th-century houses, and an everyone-is-welcome cultural scene. Vacationers spend the days frolicking at commerce-free Race Point and Herring Cove beaches, biking through pine forests and dunes, or strolling downtown's Commercial Street to visit its funky shops, galleries, and eateries. P-town's vibrant LGBTQ+ scene shines with cabarets and drag shows (often with Broadway and RuPaul's Drag Race vets at the helm) and a whole lot of dancing.

The 30 most charming beach towns in the USA

From hip surf culture in the Pacific southwest, remote and rugged Hawaiian shores, sweltering bayou heat in the south and refined New England charm in the Atlantic northeast, America’s shorelines merit special attention. Their diversity and natural beauty are further enhanced by the range of charming beach towns and small cities that have developed there over the centuries. Here are 30 of the best.

beach tourism city

Key West, FL boats at sunset (Photo: alyssa BLACK. via Flickr / CC BY-SA 2.0)

Waves lap 88,633 miles (142,641km) of United States shoreline from the Arctic Ocean in the northwest, and the Pacific to the Atlantic Ocean from west to east (according to the US Census Bureau). And all along these twists and turns of land, around the bays and inlets, estuaries and peninsulas, there are signs of human existence, from mighty cities like New York and Los Angeles, to remote towns and peaceful beaches. In all, 23 of the 50 States meet an ocean at some point, while an additional seven states have shoreline beach towns along one of the Great Lakes.

Therefore, we decided to ask a broad array of writers, travel bloggers, photographers and other in-the-know professionals to pick the five beach towns  they consider to be the most charming in the United States. To be eligible for inclusion, a town or city had to have a population of fewer than 30,000 people. After totting up the votes, we now present to you, in alphabetical order, the 30 beach towns our survey deemed the USA’s most charming.

Asbury Park, NJ

beach tourism city

Asbury Park, NJ (Photo: Nick Broten via Flickr / CC BY-NC-ND 2.0)

Jersey Shore has today gotten itself a bit of a sleazy reputation, but few people realize that it is made up of 140 miles of direct coastline with plenty of diversity. For example, Asbury Park retains the traditional charm of the 1930s Jersey Shore, such as the boardwalks, arcades and water parks. Although not immune to The Shore’s post-war decline, Asbury Park has managed to pull off the phoenix from the flames trick more than once. First the city became a music hub, where locals like Bruce Springsteen got his start on the stages of venues like the Stone Pony and Asbury Lanes. The Garden State Film Festival brings filmmakers to Asbury Park every year, while the LGBTQ+ world enjoys a welcoming community and vibrant nightlife scene here too.

Beaufort, NC

North Carolina’s Crystal Coast is 85 miles of gorgeous sand, most of which can be found forming offshore banks that shelter the mainland. Just inside this protective outer coastal layer you’ll find one of the first English settlements in North Carolina: the town of Beaufort, established in 1709. A slew of publications has awarded Beaufort accolades from the USA’s coolest small town, and even its favorite town. Now it can also claim to be one of the most charming beach towns in the US, thanks to its pretty waterfront docks and wild horses that live and roam freely through the Rachel Carson Reserve.

Cannon Beach, OR

beach tourism city

Cannon Beach, OR (Photo: Bernd Thaller via Flickr / CC BY 2.0)

The less-developed Pacific coastline often seems much wilder than the east coast, with its rambunctious waves and precipitous cliffs. Cannon Beach enjoys a real sense of watery wilderness, with large monoliths rising up above the surf and forest-clad hills plunging down to stretches of pristine, empty sand; apart from in June, when the annual sandcastle-building contest sees the beach transformed at the whims of imagination. To the north in Ecola State Park you’ll find isolated beaches and grazing elk. The town’s center exhibits an idyllic cluster of small eateries, shops and galleries hemmed in by Ecola Creek as it seeks the ocean.

Cape May, NJ

beach tourism city

Cape May, NJ (Photo: mbtrama via Flickr / CC BY 2.0)

At the southernmost tip of New Jersey’s coast is the characterful little city of Cape May, which offers a decidedly different waterfront flavor to many of its Jersey Shore counterparts. The Victorian-era architecture is often exquisite, earning Cape May the designation as a National Historic Landmark. A look back at the town’s past is best captured by the museum and main Victorian-era building of Emlen Physick Estate. A walk along Beach Avenue reveals some of the quaintest buildings in the state, while the Atlantic rolls in opposite. Cape May Beach has regularly been voted one of the best in New Jersey.

Capitola, CA

California’s coastline, particularly the stretch between San Francisco and Los Angeles, is rightly lauded for its natural beauty. Throw a charming little city like Capitola into the mix and you have the recipe for a perfect beach getaway. There are plenty of pretty beaches around the city, like the more urban Capitola Beach, which is abutted by the quirky Venetian Court, a gaily painted set of condominiums designed in a Mediterranean colonial revival style. Further east, New Brighton State Beach is a pleasant and more secluded stretch of coast offering expansive views over Monterey Bay.

Carmel-by-the-Sea, CA

beach tourism city

Carmel-by-the-Sea, CA (Photo: J Klinger via Flickr / CC BY 2.0)

Further south of Monterey Bay, the coastline takes on a wilder, jagged and rocky aspect, the towns are more rustic and the general air is one of refinement. Carmel-by-the-Sea epitomizes this atmosphere, with its 18 th century Mission, beautiful homes and penchant for attracting notable creatives to live there. Actors Clint Eastwood and Betty White, photographer Ansel Adams, and a bevy of literary icons including Jack London, Upton Sinclair, Robert Louis Stevenson and James Ellroy live or have lived in Carmel-by-the-Sea. They are no doubt attracted, in part, by the white sand beach, scenic coastal paths and largely rural-Pacific feel to the city’s layout. It’s certainly easy to imagine visiting and never leaving.

Chincoteague, VA

Wild, wild horses – or in the case of Chincoteague, feral, feral ponies – are one of the main reasons to visit this pretty Virginian island town. You can experience the rural vibe and learn all about Chincoteague ponies at the island’s history museum, or visit the various breeders located around town. This is a place to come and relax, grab an ice cream from the excellent Island Creamery, and hire a bike to explore Chincoteague National Wildlife Refuge, which lies just over the water on the outer bank between Chincoteague and the Atlantic. Here you’ll see the old red and white Assateague Lighthouse and no doubt encounter bands of horses pawing through the forest or wandering down the beaches.

Destin is a quintessential Florida Panhandle holiday city, with waterparks, coastal resort hotels and picture-postcard white sand lapped by turquoise Gulf of Mexico water. And of course, no self-respecting Florida city would be complete without its golf course, of which there are three nearby. Destin Harbor is packed with fishing boats, as well as homes with their own backyard dock. Word on the water is that it’s the luckiest fishing village around, but there’s only one way to test if that’s mere hyperbole. You’ll find dozens of fishing charters off Harbor Boulevard. Although quite heavily developed, the sand dune boardwalks at Henderson Beach State Park are a fine escape for the urban hubbub.

Hanalei, HI

beach tourism city

Hawaii has enough charming beach towns to fill out this entire list twice over but Hanalei is in a league of its own. The tropical town on the north shore of Kauai looks out over nothing but hundreds of miles of raw Pacific. The coast around here is remarkably beautiful, in part due to its isolation. You’re likely to have most of Lumaha’i and Wainiha beaches to yourself. Hanalei Bay itself is surrounded by verdant mountains that culminate in a wide, sweeping beach studded with lofty palm trees and water offering decent surfing conditions in the winter. Hanalei’s beauty has been acknowledged by all who’ve been there from Hawaiian royalty to various filmmakers and musicians over the years, including the Red Hot Chili Peppers.

Kennebunkport, ME

Lobster dinners and period architecture say a lot about the old shipbuilding and fishing town of Kennebunkport. Today it’s a well-to-do town with pretty wooden waterfront houses and a penchant for naming geographical features after animals, including Goat Island, Porpoise Cove and Goose Rocks Beach. Most restaurants serve Maine lobster, with crab and fish dishes also a popular feature at many of the excellent eateries in town. The best of the architecture can be found a little way inland at the Kennebunkport Historic District, such as the Greek revivalist building that houses the First Families Museum.

Key West, FL

beach tourism city

Once you reach Key West, you can’t go any further. The pace of life at the end of the Florida Keys has attracted many notable individuals, including Ernest Hemingway, whose six-toed cat is said to have spawned the whole line of similarly dexterous felines that still live around Ernest Hemingway House Museum. Although home to 25,000 people, there’s always a sense of the rural pervading the streets of Key West, with chickens roaming freely through the streets and occasionally being shooed away from stores selling cigars and rum. Numerous museums and landmarks could keep a visitor busy at Key West for days, where you’ll also find the southernmost point of the Continental US, meaning that its southernmost beach town is one of its most charming.

Laguna Beach, CA

beach tourism city

Plenty of people will already have heard of California’s Laguna Beach. The seaside resort city has been the setting for dramas and reality TV shows in the past and thanks to its proximity to Los Angeles, has been called home by luminaries from all walks including Buzz Aldrin, John Steinbeck, Bette Midler and even Warren Buffet. This self-professed artist colony has a little bit of everything, Orange Country charm, prime surfing beaches, coastal hiking trails and some wonderful beaches backed by low cliffs that conceal the odd boulder, arch and even a folly called the Pirate Tower.

Long Beach, WA

Washington State’s Long Beach is the kind of tiny west coast city that is ideal for lovers of the great outdoors. An excellent network of coastal trails passes through grasslands and forest, along boardwalks and up to clifftop viewpoints. Close to Long Beach town there’s a gray whale skeleton washed up on the beach. The town itself seems to specialize in eccentricities like the world’s largest frying pan, Marsh’s Free Museum, which is really a curio gift shop containing some unusual displays like a human skeleton and Jake the Alligator Man (pretty much what you’d imagine there). The World Kite Museum towards the south of the city showcases just how creative kite makers can be. You can also buy your own and make the most of that spirited Pacific breeze.

beach tourism city

Mystic, CT at dawn (Photo: R Boed via Flickr / CC BY 2.0)

A name can say a lot in a short space of time. Connecticut’s Mystic, however is not the hubble, bubble, toil and trouble place that you’d expect. In fact, it’s quite the opposite; the historic shipbuilding village is New England’s premier destination for all things maritime. Aptly, it derives its name from the native Pequot people’s phrase ‘missi-tuk’, which is one of those delightful phrases with no direct translation in English. It refers to the moment when waves are formed on a large river due to action of the tides and/or wind. Naturally ships are common here, but are mostly of the historic sailing variety. Some offer cruises, others can be found at the Mystic Seaport Museum, while Mystic Aquarium concerned itself with all aquatic living things.

Nags Head, NC

Sounding more like a pub in England than a beach town, Nags Head is a long thin settlement on North Carolina’s outer banks. Early explorers would have seen high sand dunes here, but the outer banks are ever changing and now the only dunes remaining are at Jockey’s Ridge State Park, where you’ll find some good hiking and hang-gliding opportunities. Outdoor pursuits are the main attraction at Nags Head, with sea kayaking and dolphin spotting cruises the most popular trips. To the south of town is the 156-foot-high (48m) Bodie Island Lighthouse, and its 217-step climb to the top is open to the public.

Nantucket, MA

beach tourism city

Not only a place from where, allegedly, there once was a man, Nantucket is also a thoroughly charming island town. As one of the main destinations around New England’s Cape Cod region of Massachusetts, Nantucket enjoys a little less tourism thanks to its remoteness. Besides the historic lighthouses along its eastern shore there are numerous small museums and landmark buildings like the Neoclassical Hadwen House, making Nantucket one of the best preserved late-18 th -century settlements in the US. The whole island is fringed with sandy beaches and, although roughly 17 miles from Madaket Beach to Great Point Lighthouse, Nantucket can largely be explored by bicycle.

Newport, RI

beach tourism city

Newport, RI (Photo: Artur Staszewski via Flickr / CC BY-SA 2.0)

Rhode Island may be the smallest state in the USA but it has plenty of contenders for the country’s top 30 most charming towns list. Leafy Newport, with its fine old Gothic buildings and impressive array of historic sites is certainly a contender for one of the very best in the country. Since its founding in 1639, Newport played an important and unfortunate role in the slave trade and the American Revolution. Fort Adams is the city’s main fortification and was used particularly during the War of 1812 and the Civil War. By the latter half of the 19 th century, monied families such as the Vanderbilts built their Gilded Age mansions in Newport, with the city’s upper-class social life best depicted in Edith Wharton’s book The Age of Innocence . You can take tours of a handful of these mansions, including Chateau-sur-Mer and The Elms. Pretty beaches, cliff walks and the Tennis Hall of Fame are just some of Newport’s many other highlights.

Ocean City, MD

Maryland’s resort destination, Ocean City, is such a draw for visitors that during the summer months its population can grow up to 50 times larger. As such there’s a very definite off-season in Ocean City, although seasonal festivals like Springfest and the reduced crowds are great reasons to visit during the shoulder season. Ocean City has the air of the classic Jersey Shore town, but thanks to major refurbishments it feels fresher. All the classic elements are there: amusement and water parks, a 2.5-mile (4-km) boardwalk complete with its shabby-chic ocean gallery and fast food outlets, and a thick ribbon of soft yellow sand.

Ogunquit, ME

beach tourism city

Ogunquit, ME (Photo: courtesy of Visit Maine)

The Native Abenaki tribe’s word Ogunquit means ‘beautiful place by the sea’, and both the meaning and the name stuck. In the early 20 th century, the town was equally popular with the fishing families as it was with artists and the subsequent creative colony’s work is now on show at the Ogunquit Museum of American Art. You’ll find works by artists like Edward Hopper, Jack Levine and Marsden Hartley, among many others. The small settlement’s homes are spaciously scattered along the rocky coastline, with the rocks occasionally parting into coves with pebble beaches. The Marginal Way is a gentle walk over the clifftops connecting the town’s modest landmarks like the squat Lobster Point Lighthouse.

Paia is an idyllic little beach town on Maui’s northern coast, which enjoys a decidedly laid-back vibe. Buddhism and boards are the main draw of Paia, with the in-town Dharma center and the excellent nearby beaches of Baldwin and Hookipa. The latter beach is best known for windsurfing and many ardent windsurfers see this location as one of the best in the US. Paia is also a great place to begin and end a drive of the Road to Hana, a revered scenic route that circumvents Haleakala National Park and involves negotiating the narrow highway’s 617 curves and 54 single-lane bridges.

Pentwater, MI

North America’s Great Lakes have shorelines too and it’d be remiss to ignore some of the charming lakeside settlements dotted around. For those who’ve never visited the Great Lakes, it might be a surprise to learn that sandy beaches are commonplace. Michigan’s Pentwater has Old Baldy, a sand dune located in Mears State Park, reachable via a 1-mile (1.4-km) hiking trail. The village’s residents are the key to Pentwater’s pleasant, easy-going charm, as you’ll no-doubt discover during a stroll along the peaceful streets. The main reason to visit though is the water, with the calm Pentwater Lake sheltered from the vagaries of the larger Lake Michigan, making it a popular spot for kayaking. In winter it often freezes over, to be commandeered by ice fishers. Boat charters are readily available for those who’d like to explore further out.

Cliffs near Poipu, HI (Photo: Andy Baerst via Flickr / CC BY 2.0)

The profusion of golf courses and top-class resort hotels announce Kauai’s Poipu as an exclusive destination. But it’s really the natural beauty around the town that holds the real charm. The coastline here consists of a series of pretty coves and bays, each with a modest, sandy beach and near-shore coral reefs great for snorkeling. Turtles are often seen in this area as well, although should be respectfully left to get on with their business when coming ashore to lay eggs. To the east of town at shipwreck beach, the surfing is particularly good, as is the coastal hiking path that leads to Makauwahi Cave Reserve and a series of isolated beaches.

Provincetown, MA

beach tourism city

Provincetown, MA (Photo: courtesy of Provincetown Tourism)

Cape Cod’s northern tip is capped by Provincetown, which marks the site where a large piece of American history was quite literally written. It was here in November of 1620 that the Pilgrims, aboard the Mayflower anchored in what is now known as Provincetown Harbor and signed the Mayflower Compact, which was to form the basis of law for the Plymouth and Cape Cod region thereafter. Provincetown’s 252-foot-tall (77m) Pilgrim Monument commemorates this. The real charm of Provincetown though is its pretty little harbor and exceedingly beautiful beaches, not least Race Point Beach with its 19 th -century lighthouse. Furthermore, Provincetown’s open, accepting people have long provided a safe, welcoming space for the LGBTQ+ community.

Rehoboth Beach, DE

Rehoboth Beach, along with Dewey Beach to the immediate south, form the backbone of Delaware’s celebrated beaches. Known for their cleanliness, William Penn designated the beaches to the north of the city as a public space way back in 1682. Cape Henlopen State Park is one of the more curious nature preserves in the US because it was formerly a military base, having held a strategic importance since the American Revolution. Around Fort Miles you can still see observation towers and the odd piece of artillery. Rehoboth Beach’s boardwalk is one of the east coast’s best, and a number of times a year it becomes the focus for one of Rehoboth Beach’s annual festivals, including the jazz, independent film and the Sea Witch festivals, with the latter hosting parades, costumes and dancing.

Sanibel Island, FL

beach tourism city

Located off the southwest coast of Florida, the barrier island of Sanibel is known for its shells. Beachcombers can pick their way along the long expanses of coarse sand, like those at Bowman’s Beach, looking for their own specimens. Alternatively, see the grand collection at the Bailey-Matthews National Shell Museum. Sanibel Island’s human story is largely one of first conquering the elements, by controlling the wetlands and building a causeway from the mainland. In recent decades however, the focus has shifted more towards long-term goals through conservation and protection of these delicate environments, with much of the island dedicated to wildlife refuges, particularly JN Ding Darling, where you might be lucky to see roseate spoonbills, mangrove cuckoos, pelicans, alligators, turtles and even a bobcat.

Saugatuck, MI

beach tourism city

Saugatuck, MI (Photo: courtesy of Lance Nelson)

Pentwater may have one sand dune, but at Saugatuck there’s a whole state park dedicated to exploring the peaks and troughs of sand, that have been anchored in place by vegetation over time. With all that sand, it’s perhaps no surprise that Saugatuck also has Oval Beach, one of the best beaches anywhere on the Great Lakes. It is separated from Saugatuck town by the 794-foot-high (242m) Mount Baldhead, reached by steep wooden steps and offering scenic views from the top. Along the Saugatuck high street the profusion of galleries and a large Center for the Arts owe their existence to the long-standing presence of an art colony in town.

St. Augustine, FL

beach tourism city

St. Augustine, FL (Photo: Doug Anderson via Flickr / CC BY 2.0)

History-lovers will find St. Augustine to be one of the most fulfilling destinations anywhere in the US. After all, it is believed to be the oldest continuously inhabited, European colonizer-established settlement in the US. Founded in 1565 under conquistador Pedro Menéndez de Avilés, it was long the capital of Florida and today it remains a small but fascinating city. Naturally, due to its age, St Augustine is a city of firsts for the US, including the first wooden schoolhouse and the oldest surviving colonial house, which is now a museum. The Colonial Quarter is effortlessly charming. Sandy beaches can be accessed at Anastasia State Park nearby.

Tybee Island, GA

You can tell how important the defense of Savannah, Georgia once was just by looking at the old military and maritime infrastructure around the coastal town of Tybee Island. Historic lighthouses and old forts, especially Fort Pulaski National Monument, are dotted all around the barrier island. Tybee Light also has a museum and the views from the top are worth the climb. Boardwalks connect the town to the gently shelving Mid Beach and North Beach, while to the south of town, Tybee Beach Pier is popular with fisherfolk. A good cluster of eateries specialize in fresh seafood.

Wellfleet, MA

beach tourism city

Wellfleet, MA (Photo: ChefMattRock via Flickr / CC BY 2.0)

The third Cape Cod area-town represented on this list, Wellfleet, is surrounded by the best of the region’s natural beauty. Enveloped by the Cape Cod National Seashore, there are numerous hiking trails, boardwalks and wildlife sanctuaries to explore, encompassing a broad range of terrains, such as saltmarsh, heath and deciduous woodland in a relatively small area. Wellfleet’s oysters are one of the main attractions however, with Wellfleet OysterFest taking place each October. And given that you are likely to be reading this article on the internet, it’s well worth noting that Wellfleet was the site where the net’s earliest precursor, the telegraph, had its first successful transatlantic transmission. The remains of Marconi’s Wireless Station can still be seen.

Wrightsville Beach, NC

If you ever watched the TV series Dawson’s Creek there’s a good chance that you’ll find Wrightsville Beach to be a very familiar place. Most of the series was filmed here, and in nearby Wilmington, particularly on the Harbor Island portion of Wrightsville Beach and around Banks Channel. Bluewater Grill was one such filming location and offers excellent waterfront dining. The beach itself is a lovely, broad expanse of sand that shelves gently into the Atlantic Ocean. Wrightsville Beach Museum of History depicts what life would have been like in the town a century ago.

Top things to do in South Beach, Miami

Lincoln Road Mall

1.  Lincoln Road Mall

  • Shopping centers

One of the country’s first pedestrian malls, Lincoln Road is continuously overrun with tourists in search of the quintessential South Beach shopping experience. To wit, it makes for fantastic people-watching if you’re a local. Expect a ton of sidewalk cafes and restaurants, public art installations, big brand stores and a Sunday sidewalk market stocked with fresh produce, vintage furnishings and more.

South Pointe Park

2.  South Pointe Park

  • South of Fifth

South Beach’s southernmost tip includes a spectacular waterfront park with plenty of green space for picnics or lounging as you watch the cruise ships sail by. It boasts ample metered parking, plus the park features access to both the beach and a walkable pier.

Time Out tip: It’s walking distance from Joe’s Take Away , Joe’s market-style counterpart, where you’ll get Miami’s freshest crabs to go for the ultimate beach picnic.

The Bass

3.  The Bass

  • Things to do
  • Cultural centers
  • South Beach

Don’t discount the bitty museum for its size—The Bass is a renowned contemporary art institution that packs incredible collections and traveling exhibitions into its diminutive edifice. Patrons should also keep an eye out for the colorful public art that constantly moves through the museum lawn.

Time Out tip: Time it right and you can hit up Sweet Liberty ’s happy hour (4–8pm, daily) after having yourself a cultured afternoon. Who’s in for .95 cent oysters?

Miami Beach Botanical Garden

4.  Miami Beach Botanical Garden

The 50-year-old, 2.6-acre urban garden had a facelift in 2011 and is back to being a popular spot to spend time away from the bustle of the city for visitors and locals alike. It hosts a variety of yoga and meditation classes, orchid exchanges, horticultural seminars and live music events on the weekends. Native Florida plants include bromeliads, palms and cycads, but there's also a Japanese garden and wetland with mangrove and pond apple trees.

The Goodtime Hotel

5.  The Goodtime Hotel

Music mogul Pharrell Williams and nightlife entrepreneur David Grutman (of LIV fame) joined forces to birth the Goodtime Hotel, a pastel-hued, real-life riff on a quirky Wes Anderson film where every nook is an iconic Instagram moment and the potential for lowkey celeb sightings abound.

Time Out tip: Inside to poolside, Strawberry Moon is the place to be. The spunky Mediterranean restaurant and club hosts summer pool parties and daily happy hours where locals and visitors bring their fashion A-game.

Española Way

6.  Española Way

This charming pedestrian boulevard is home to one of our favorite South Beach cafes, A La Folie. A bohemian hideaway for nearly 20 years, it serves homey, locally hard-to-find French classics like tartiflette, a gooey potato-and-onion gratin dotted with cubes of fatty bacon and layered with pungent Reblochon cheese.

Time Out tip: Newer spots have revived the promenade, including Andalusian hotspot Tropezón and the buzzy Roof at the Esmé Hotel . Longstanding dive Kill Your Idol is a solid late-night proposition, especially for karaoke on Thursdays.

Mac's Club Deuce

7.  Mac's Club Deuce

  • price 1 of 4

A favorite of the late celebrity chef and travel journalist Anthony Bourdain, this smoke-filled spot is charmingly out of character for South Beach, and "eclectic" doesn’t begin to describe the mix of denizens who gather here nightly. The Deuce attracts the motliest, coolest, scariest crowd of any bar in Miami. And for good reason: Its pool table, jukebox and vintage neon wall art are the ideal complements to a legendary daily two-for-one happy hour that goes from 8am to 5pm.

New World Center

8.  New World Center

  • Performances

New World is home to America’s only full-time orchestral academy, so fellows from around the world regularly put on concerts here. Looking to keep it casual? The adjacent SoundScape park hosts free outdoor Wallcast concerts and movies throughout the season, perfect for packing a picnic and enjoying a screening under the stars. New World’s concerts are often fun collaborations with local DJs, famous composers and more, so things don’t feel as stuffy as normal orchestras.

Sunset Harbour

9.  Sunset Harbour

This quieter pocket of South Beach overlooking the sailboat-dotted Intracoastal Waterway is populated by locals who live in its highrise condos plus in-the-know visitors who come to enjoy the charming scenery and a smattering of excellent restaurants, bars plus outdoorsy activities like paddleboarding, kayaking and scooter rentals.

Time Out tip: For a breezy, seafood-centric brunch, Stiltsville Fish Bar is a great option. Local coffee institution Panther has a home here, along with the popular Pura Vida cafe.

MILA

10.  MILA

  • Restaurants

This recently expanded rooftop venue inconspicuously overlooking Lincoln Road has quickly become one of South Beach's trendiest destinations. Upstairs, find a sprawling indoor-outdoor bar and lounge decked out in luxe materials with a central water feature where fire dancers perform throughout the night. Downstairs, an additional 7,900 square feet of space contains a dimly lit members-only cocktail lounge and gorgeous omakase counter, rounding out the chic Mediterr-Asian-themed experience.

Wolfsonian-FIU

11.  Wolfsonian-FIU

Whether it’s browsing modern-age artifacts or perusing midcentury propaganda, visitors exploring Wolfsonian-FIU’s permanent and traveling exhibitions learn about the myriad ways art and design have helped shape the contemporary world. The Art-Deco–era building also houses youth programs and admission is free every Friday from 6 to 9pm.

Time Out tip: Across the street, the Wolfsonian also hosts member-discounted movie nights at O Cinema , an indie theater housed in the historic city hall.

The Standard Spa

12.  The Standard Spa

  • price 3 of 4

A trendy boutique hotel chain—yes—but the Standard is also a hangout for South Beach scenesters. Monthly memberships hover in the hundreds of dollars and access to the pool requires booking a spa service, but neither one keeps the locals from filling its loungers or sipping rosé poolside. The Standard often hosts fun pop-up events and dockside barbecues on Sundays.

Time Out tip:  Dine at the Standard’s waterfront restaurant, Lido , to soak in the vibes and scenery. It’s an ideal spot to unwind as the sun melts into the bay.

Art Deco District Welcome Center

13.  Art Deco District Welcome Center

There’s a lot of history to soak up in South Beach, specifically in the city’s Art Deco district. Start your day in the colorful neighborhood with a stop here and make the most of your visit. The center will send you off armed with maps and suggestions for DIY walking tours.

Time Out tip: Scared to do it on your own? Book a guided excursion and let one of the Miami Design Preservation League’s certified historians guide you through two hours of storied hotels, restaurants and other structures, including a number of interiors.

Rooftop Cinema Club

14.  Rooftop Cinema Club

Miami marks this globally recognized club's ninth location, which includes cinemas in London, New York, Los Angeles and San Diego. Billed as a "social to cinema," the rooftop theater sets out to present more than just flicks. Miami's gorgeous candy-colored sunsets will greet guests (adults only) as they're escorted to their comfy seats (either single Adirondack chairs or loungers) to watch on a giant LED screen. Everyone receives wireless headphones to ensure the sound is crystal clear and the volume is just right.

Nikki Beach

15.  Nikki Beach

Part beach club, part nightclub and part lounge, Nikki Beach ticks off all the boxes of what you want in an over-the-top South Beach spot. If you can afford it, book a cabana, order some rosé and see where the night takes you. The brunch/day party is the best place to party on Sunday mornings.

World Erotic Art Museum

16.  World Erotic Art Museum

The 20-year-old museum explores millennia of sex through classical art, ancient artifacts and a trove of naughty toys. In addition to housing numerous exhibits of erotic art from around the world, WEAM features a sizeable collection of antique penises and Instagram-worthy phalluses in all sizes and states of arousal.

Time Out tip: The new George Daniell Museum is also located in the same building. Known for his portraits of Audrey Hepburn, Sophia Loren and others, the gay American photographer and artist worked for Time and Life magazines.

Lummus Park

17.  Lummus Park

This sprawling 74-acre park takes you through some of South Beach's most recognizable territory: along classic Ocean Drive architecture (hello, Versace Mansion), past muscle hunks doing pull-ups on the sand and right up to some prime ocean views. The park contains two outdoor gym areas plus rentals for umbrellas and chairs, bikes and even rollerblades so you can really blend in with the locals.

Jewish Museum of Florida-FIU

18.  Jewish Museum of Florida-FIU

The Jewish Museum of Florida tells the story of Miami’s large Hebrew community. You can breeze through this small cultural center spanning two interconnected historic synagogues in less than 30 minutes. The museum’s core exhibit, “MOSAIC: Jewish Life in Florida,” features more than 600 photographs and artifacts that capture the group’s settlement across the peninsula.

Ocean Drive

19.  Ocean Drive

Bear with us here: Ocean Drive is fun. The touristy strip gets a bad wrap for its overpriced drinks (hello, $65 margarita) and we wouldn’t really advocate eating or drinking at one of the sidewalk cafes (unless it’s an epic drag brunch at Palace Bar , of course). But Ocean Drive is the absolute best place for weird Miami people-watching.

Time Out tip: While you’re there, check out the Versace Mansion, which is now officially called the Villa Casa Casuarina . It’s a luxury hotel with a public restaurant where you can still gawk at the frozen-in-time decadence of the late designer’s home.

10 Best Things To Do in Panama City Beach

Updated March 7, 2023

Panama City Beach's sugar white sand is what primarily attracts families, couples and spring breakers year after year. But this vacation haven isn't just for beach bums. Outdoor adventurers will have plenty of land to explore at Conservation

  • All Things To Do

beach tourism city

St. Andrews State Park St. Andrews State Park

St. Andrews State Park has enough attractions and activities to keep every member of your family happy. Along with a nearly 2-mile-long white sand beach, the park also boasts paved bike trails, marked hiking trails, water sports equipment rentals (including canoes, kayaks and snorkeling gear) and shuttle boat tours to Shell Island, a 7-mile long undeveloped barrier island. Additionally, the park provides a concession stand with snacks, souvenirs and fishing supplies.

Recent visitors described the park as beautiful and praised the clean beach and facilities. Reviewers said the park can get quite crowded on the weekends and advised visiting during the week if your itinerary allows. And keep your eyes peeled for plenty of wildlife: travelers said there was a lot of activity in and out of the water from local animals like alligators, heron, ibis and white tail deer.

Beaches Beaches free

With 27 miles of beaches and nearly 100 access points, PCB is a beach bum's paradise. You won't have a difficult time finding a stretch of sand to park your towel; in fact, you may have a harder time deciding on what shoreline to relax.

If you want to stay close to the downtown area, head to Front Beach Road. From here, you'll find a bevy of convenient Panama City Beach access points and street parking. To experience Florida's coastal beauty at its most natural, hop a shuttle boat to Shell Island . This barrier island off of St. Andrews State Park is undeveloped with few crowds and a peaceful atmosphere, according to recent visitors. Plus, it's a haven for dolphins. For even more undeveloped land, head to Camp Helen State Park, which sits on the far western border of Panama City Beach. Along with a quiet beach, it's also home to trails that snake through dunes and scrub oak forests, not to mention a rare dune lake.

Panama City Beach Dolphin Tours Panama City Beach Dolphin Tours

Though you can see and interact with dolphins at the Gulf World Marine Park , locals and visitors will tell you: there's nothing like observing them in the wild. Dolphin tours are a popular to-do in Panama City Beach, and often described by travelers as their favorite experience in PCB.

Similar to the area's fishing charters , there are a variety of dolphin tours to choose from. If you want a more intimate wildlife-viewing experience, consider Dolphin and Snorkel Tours , which limits the number of guests on its boats to six people. The company also guarantees dolphin sightings because of its location at the Bay Point Marina (the closest marina to Shell Island , which is where dolphins are usually spotted). These tours, which typically last three hours, also include snorkel gear in case you'd like to get in the water to explore more.

Shell Island Shell Island

If you need a break from the crowds in Panama City Beach, consider making the short trip to Shell Island. This 7-mile-long barrier island runs east to west between the Gulf of Mexico and the St. Andrew Bay. Because it's undeveloped, you'll find plenty of coastal creatures and untouched vegetation, plus miles of pearly white sand to sink your toes into. While recent visitors said the natural setting was a relaxing reprieve from the busy, commercialized feel of the mainland, it isn't without a few drawbacks. Shell Island has no restrooms, concession stands, trash receptacles, picnic tables or shade pavilions, meaning you'll need to come with everything you need (and take it back with you when you head back across the bay).

To get around the fact that the island hosts no facilities, many travelers choose to hop on a charter to the island. This option offers the best of both worlds: You'll have access to food, drinks and a restroom on the boat, and still be able to play in the island's shallow waters.

beach tourism city

Conservation Park Conservation Park free

When you're ready to explore more of PCB's nature, head to Conservation Park. As a safeguard for wetlands, wildlife and pine forest, the park is a natural filter, balancing treated water before it travels to the St. Andrews Bay. This nearly 3,000-acre park features 12 different trails of varying difficultly and eight boardwalks totaling more than a mile in length. Bring binoculars – you'll likely spot plenty of birds and wildlife in the wetlands area.

According to recent visitors, the park's well-maintained, flat trails are perfect for hiking or biking. One word of caution from reviewers: Bring plenty of sunscreen and water. Though some said the park was a bit out of the way compared to other top attractions (it's about 10 miles west of downtown Panama City Beach and best reached by car), travelers also enjoyed that its location away from the beach crowds made it incredibly peaceful.

beach tourism city

Shipwreck Island Waterpark Shipwreck Island Waterpark

Consistently described by visitors as a great place for families, Shipwreck Island Waterpark is a 20-acre facility that features a wave pool, a lazy river, several water slides and flumes, and two shallow pools perfect for novice swimmers. True to its name, it's also home to a replica of a 17th-century sailing ship that allows swimmers to zip line off the ship before dropping into a large lagoon pool. Along with the rides, the park also boasts concessions (though reviewers were not as impressed with the food as they were the attractions).

Recent travelers said the park was a great place to spend a day with the kids and said it never felt too crowded. Visitors particularly praised the facilities available for little swimmers and said a day here is worth the ticket price.

beach tourism city

Fishing Charters Fishing Charters

As with other coastal Florida cities, Panama City Beach is a prime spot for both avid and novice anglers to cast a line. Though you can fish from the piers along the beach and at St. Andrew Bay or directly from the shore (with the proper fishing license), there are also several charter companies that can transport you out into the Gulf of Mexico (perfect for if you want to try your hand at deep-sea fishing).

Along with their fishing skills and knowledge of the area, most charter captains or operators will provide all fishing equipment (including bait and tackle) and the licenses you need to fish in area waters. Choose your charter company based on how serious you are about fishing. For instance, some companies like The Reel Contender Fishing Charters allow just five anglers on board with trips lasting between five and 10 hours. In contrast, companies like Jubilee Deep Sea Fishing , which describes itself as a "party fishing boat," may be better suited for more casual anglers. Capt. Anderson's Marina is another company favored by recent travelers.

beach tourism city

Pier Park Pier Park free

PCB is first and foremost a beach destination. But when you need a break from the sun and surf (or if some clouds thwart your plans), the area has a bevy of attractions to keep you entertained away from the shoreline. Case in point: Pier Park. An outdoor retail, dining and entertainment hub, Pier Park is home to familiar chain restaurants like Olive Garden, Subway and Five Guys, along with popular stores like Charming Charlie, Dillard's and Old Navy, among others. When you need a reprieve from shopping, head to Pier Park Amusements, the on-site theme park (a hit with recent visitors). It features a giant slide, a small roller coaster and a free-fall ride, along with more gentle attractions for young children

Along with the variety of stores and activities, visitors particularly liked how clean and safe the area is.

Gulf World Marine Park Gulf World Marine Park

If you love dolphins, you'll want to schedule a stop at Gulf World Marine Park. Though the park houses several other species, including sea turtles, stingrays, sharks and sea lions, dolphins are the main attraction here, and one of the major reasons visitors recommend spending a few hours at the park. Similar to SeaWorld, the Gulf World Marine Park hosts animal shows (dolphins and sea lions are the only animals that perform), feeding demonstrations and opportunities to swim with the dolphins and interact with the park's other residents, including a variety of birds and reptiles.

Aside from the animals, recent visitors were also impressed with the knowledgeable trainers and said this attraction was a hit with the kids. If you need a rainy day activity, reviewers said this would be a solid choice. And if you're willing to splurge, travelers said swimming with the dolphins was an unforgettable experience.

beach tourism city

Ripley's Believe It or Not! Ripley's Believe It or Not!

Though Ripley's isn't unique to Panama City Beach, it is a favorite rainy day activity among families with young kids. Inside, you'll find oddities like shrunken heads, one-of-a-kind artwork and other interesting artifacts synonymous with the Ripley name. Along with the hands-on displays, this outpost is also home to a 7-D moving theater, the LaserRace Challenge and a mirror maze, if you're willing to pay extra.

Reviews were a bit mixed on this PCB location. Some said it was a fun way to spend an hour or two if you need a break from the beach , while others said the museum had a tired feel and was expensive compared to the area's other attractions. If you're not traveling with kids, this may not be worth your time and money, according to recent travelers.

You’ll understand why so many people consider it the ultimate vacation spot: There is never a shortage of things to do in Panama City Beach! For every sort of traveler, this coastal town is an outdoor playground full of attractions and activities!

Lying across the crystal-clear waters of the Gulf of Mexico in Northwest Florida, Panama City Beach is a hotspot for vacationers, and it’s easy to see why. The long stretch of sugar-white beaches is thriving with beach bums of all ages throughout the year. Couples come here for a sun-kissed honeymoon, families to spend quality time together and young souls to celebrate a long weekend. And then there was me. The Best Attractions, Activities & Things To Do in Panama City Beach (PCB) Florida

1. indulge at the the yard milkshake bar.

How’d you like a milkshake with a whole cupcake sticking out of the top or an entire waffle peeking out of a mound of whipped cream? At The Yard Milkshake Bar , you will not believe your eyes as you are dazzled with some of the craziest treats. They’re not just for kids!  Whether you choose the Cookie Monster (that was my choice), the Cereal Killer or any of the other decadent desserts, I dare you to eat the whole thing.

Tip: We went at around 12:30 p.m. on a Sunday, and the line was about a half-hour long (with a 20 minute wait after ordering). But, by the time we left the place at around 2 p.m., there was no line at all.

2. Get an Epic View from the SkyWheel Ferris Wheel

Get ready for your breath to be taken away with the spectacular view of Panama City Beach on board the 53-meter SkyWheel ! The gondola ride offers a relaxing experience and is perfect for taking that Instagram-worthy photo (or video!).

If you want to bring things up a notch, their VIP pass gives you free drinks (alcoholic or non-alcoholic), double the flight time, and the chance to ride their VIP gondola. It has a glass-bottom floor, giving you more opportunities to take that perfect shot!

Take in the View from the SkyWheel Ferris Wheel

3. Take a Boat Ride to Shell Island

Shell Island is a seven-mile island on the Florida Emerald Coast with picturesque white sand beaches. It’s fun for locals and visitors of Panama City Beach to rent a pontoon and spend the day enjoying the sand and sun. Plus, there’s a strong possibility of seeing some dolphins along the way!

It is a beautiful barrier island punctuated with magnificent sand dunes and coastal sage scrub. The beach is flourishing with creatures, including shorebirds, turtles and deer. While there, I found lots of shells (of course), plenty of secluded spots to relax and even a starfish — the perfect way to spend a lazy day.

Our transportation to the island was provided by Lagoon Pontoon . We stocked it with goodies for lunch, plenty of drinks (a cooler filled with Fresca!) and the beach essentials. They provided the coolest ride with all the safety accouterments onboard and two slides that attached to the back.

4. Believe It or Not at Ripley’s

Ripley’s Believe It or Not! is the go-to place in Panama City Beach for those who want to explore the strange and unbelievable. Their ‘Odditorium’ houses bizarre exhibits from around the globe that people of all ages will enjoy.

Their 7D Moving Theater provides an immersive experience with its 3D movies and motion seats. The Marvelous Mirror Maze will challenge your eyes with its maze of infinity mirrors, with a treasure waiting at the end. If you’re up to the challenge, the Impossible Laser Race will test your skills in navigating your way through laser beams like in spy movies.

In the words of Dean Cain: Unbelievable? Believe it!

5. Get a Finn’s Original Fish Taco

It’s always taco time at Finn’s Island Style Grub , home of Finn’s original fish tacos. The ahi taco and their signature fish taco are some of the best, but there are plenty of others to choose from at this food-truck-style eatery. While you’re waiting for your order, pop into their barista bar next door and order a Black Salt Mocha. You won’t be disappointed!

What better way to enjoy your beach trip than indulge yourself with fresh seafood, and Pineapple Willy’s restaurant won’t disappoint! Boasting a wide variety of seafood dishes, from fried oysters to grilled shrimp to fileted Mahi-Mahi, your mouth and tummy will keep coming for more.

And to add to your overall experience, you can also enjoy the live music performances while having a drink at Willy’s Pier Bar. All in all, this is something that you definitely should try!

7. Take a Dolphin Sunset Cruise

Dolphins and sunsets — it doesn’t get much better than that. Island Time Sailing will take you on a 2-hour cruise that swishes you through Grand Lagoon and onto the Gulf of Mexico in search for Flipper and his friends — we saw plenty dolphins on our cruise! Grab a drink and a snack, then end the evening with a beautiful sunset across the emerald waters.

8. See a Show at Todd Herendeen Theatre

Looking for a night of classic rock & country music? Then don’t miss the ‘Tribute to the Legends of Music’ performances of National Recording Artist Todd Herendeen and his band at the Todd Herendeen Theatre , performed several nights a week.

You can walk in at any time to enjoy the show, and you can also bring your own beer or wine! Dinners are only available through reservations, so make sure to book in advance if in case you’re planning to have your dinner here as well.

9. Have a Beach Bonfire

Cornhole, s’mores and a cooler filled with adult beverages, plus a bonfire on the Panama City Beach oceanfront— that’s what you are going to get with Endless Beach Rentals . The company swoops in and sets up EVERYTHING for you (from chairs to hammocks to a stocked cooler), then they come and clean everything up. No fuss, no muss. Your only job is to show up and have fun!

10. Enjoy at Swampy Jack’s Wongo Adventure

Get ready to join Swampy Jack’s Wongo Adventure on his adventures over the world in this premier theme park destination! The theme park features different rides like the Swamp Ape, Eye of the Kraken, and much more. Each ride gives its own one-of-a-kind enjoyable experience, with some paying homage to classic rides that people enjoyed in Panama City Beach (with their own added twist!).

Feeling a bit more competitive? You can also try the Marrakesh Road Rally and race against other people around the track in different race modes. And did I mention that you can have a Mario Kart-like experience in their Power-Up race mode?

Note: they are only open seasonally, so check their website before your visit!

11. Get Donuts at the Iconic Thomas’ Donuts & Snack Shop

Forget the breakfast omelettes and pancakes, because at the family-owned Thomas’ Donuts & Snack Shack it’s all about the fluffy dunkers. It is a haven for donut lovers! They have everything from the classic glazed to key lime filled. I can vouch for the red velvet cake. And the chocolate sprinkle. And the cinnamon twist. Don’t judge.

They also serve a handful of other breakfast items, like muffins, biscuits and breakfast sandwiches.

FYI: There is almost always a line in the morning, so get there really early or plan on waiting. We arrived at 10: a.m. on the weekend, and the queue was about 20 people deep.

12. Have an Animal Adventure at ZooWorld Panama City Beach

Get up close and personal with the wildlife at ZooWorld Zoological and Botanical Conservatory . Home to hundreds of exotic animals, from kangaroos to lions to sloths and so much more, this park will take you on an adventure trip around the world!

You also get to experience petting and feeding animals like lemurs and baby bearded dragons, not to mention the free kisses that you will get from the giraffes :) This is one experience you can’t miss!

13. Walk Russell-Fields City Pier

The Russell-Fields City Pier sits at the end of Pier Park and stretches 1,500 feet out into the Gulf of Mexico. You can pay a small fee ($3) to be able to take the short stroll to the end. It is worth it!

You can also get a nice view of the pier (and some great fish tacos) by sitting on the patio of Hook’d Pier Bar & Grill.

14. Go Sightseeing at Sea Dragon Pirate Cruise

Board the Sea Dragon on a voyage with Capt. “Fearless” Phil and his friendly pirate crew! Though the activities on board are more geared towards kids, adults will enjoy the whole sightseeing tour from start to finish. If you are lucky, you will get to see dolphins as well!

For a more scenic experience, you can book the sunset cruise (which costs a few extra dollars). Yummy snacks like hotdogs & candies and drinks for both kids and adults are available on the ship.

15. Do a Tasting at Panama City Beach Winery

Panama City Beach Winery specializes in fruit wines and is the only registered citrus winery in the United States. Their wines are made with 100 percent real fruit and no added sugar to the finish. Their blackberry wine literally has four pounds of blackberries in every bottle!

Stop by for a free tasting and take a bottle (or two) back to the beach with you. Don’t miss trying the Key Lime wine — it was my favorite and has won a number of awards!

16. Take a Panama City Beach Helicopter Tour

If there is one thing that makes Panama City Beach worth returning to, it’s the helicopter tours. The views on the ground and the sea are already spectacular, but seeing Panama City Beach up in the air provides a different perspective of its beauty and splendor.

If you haven’t tried riding a helicopter before, now is your chance to do so! You can also try a wildlife helicopter tour if you want something a little different. You’ll be able to see turtles, stingrays, and even sharks! They’ll get you close enough to see the magnificent creatures while also keeping enough distance as not to disturb them.

Panhandle Helicopters has a variety of tours for you to choose from!

17. Have Fun at Pier Park

Pier Park is the place to shop the beachy boutiques, get fruity drinks (served in a pineapple!) and indulge in beachfront restaurants. It has the whole package. There are more than 120 retail stores where you can buy clothes, shoes, accessories and even furniture. Plus, if you are a fan of Ferris wheels, you can get a whole new perspective of Florida’s Panama City Beach on the Skywheel that soars 200 feet above Pier Park. You can see for miles!

If you want to explore the Pier Park at a leisurely pace, then I suggest you go early in the morning before it gets too busy and hot.

If you’d like to know more about what Pier Park has to offer, check out the Panama City Beach (PCB) visitors website .

Andy’s Flour Power has all the brunch favorites made with the freshest ingredients, but they are known for their French toast—and it’s to die for! If you are looking for a killer eggs Benedict, then head over to Liza’s Kitchen who puts it on their homemade double-proofed focaccia bread.

20. Break Free at Escape Manor

Invite your family or friends and unleash your inner Sherlock at this escape room-type game at Escape Manor ! Their Panama City Beach site has three different missions to choose from, each with its unique story and mystery. Is your team capable of escaping before the timer runs out?

Whether you are a fan of mysteries or you just want to have a unique experience with your loved ones, Escape Manor will keep you coming back for more!

21. Do a Double-Take of the Upside Down Building

WonderWorks is an amusement park that combines education and entertainment. Inside you can feel the power of a 71 mph hurricane and make life-sized bubbles. But, you don’t even need to go inside to get a little taste of the fun. The exterior is built like an upside down building, and it’s worth at least a drive-by. You can kill two birds with one stone because right across the street is a ginormous ship replica that is home to Ripley’s Believe it or Not.

22. Swim at Panama City Beach

Take a splash in the different beaches around Panama Beach City. Some popular ones to go to are Camp Helen State Park, St. Andrews State Park (perfect for kids!), and Laguna Beach. Most of the beaches in the area are also open for different activities like kayaking and snorkeling.

Aside from the beaches, Panama City Beach’s resorts, hotels, and condos have some of the best pools in the state. Choose from huge pools with waterslides, a lazy river, and a poolside grill/bar to peaceful, boutique pools where the only sound is the air rustling the palm trees.

23. Explore the Pretty Parks

St. Andrews State Park is surrounded by water — the Gulf on one side and the bay on the other. You can either enjoy a relaxing sunbathe on the beach, explore the dunes or walk one of the two nature trails. The 180-acre Camp Helen State Park is also bordered by the gulf, in addition to Lake Powell. It is one of the largest coastal dune lakes in Florida with plenty of activities. Have fun searching for wildlife, swimming, fishing and strolling around the refurbished textile mill buildings. If hiking is your main goal for the day, then the 24 miles of unpaved trails at Conservation Park is a must (bikers can also enjoy the 2900-acre park!).

25. Get Wet at the Shipwreck Island Waterpark

If you want a break from the beautiful beaches, awaken your inner child at the Shipwreck Island Waterpark. Boasting amazing waterslides, wave pools, and lazy rivers, the tropical water park is one of the most fun attractions in Panama City Beach. Their 500,000-gallon Ocean Motion Wave pool creates three foot waves to splash around in or you can opt to meander down the lazy river. If you are more of a thrill-seeker, don’t miss the Pirate’s Plunge and Tree Top Drop waterslides.

26. Swim with Dolphins at Water Planet

If you are fond of dolphins, definitely go ahead and swim with them on Water Planet in Panama City Beach. They offer a range of exciting and educational swim-with-the-dolphin tours for the whole family. This includes the chance to explore Shell Island, snorkel on shipwrecks, and collect shells.

They offer 1 day, 3-day, or 1-week programs which blend the natural beauty of a dolphin encounter that some people call the most moving encounter they ever had. Children with special needs also benefit from their dolphin therapeutic program.

27. Ride Go Carts

Take a spin on the fastest, tallest and steepest go-kart track in Panama City Beach, Race City . They have tracks for every level of speedster, from a lil’ speedy to a pro. This Northern California girl is especially fond of the Golden Gate track, a 40 foot replica of the breathtaking bridge whose original is in my neck of the woods.

28. Take a Day Trip to Mexico Beach

Though Mexico Beach might have a small-town feel to it, there are many fascinating places to go to and engaging activities to do on your day trip. Shelling, watching the dolphins frolic at sunset, and taking a refreshing swim are just some of the popular activities for visitors and locals.

Then it is just about 15-20 minutes to Panama City Beach You can easily check for the best fare deals at Skyscanner , which also has the option to choose ‘cheapest month’ as the departure to find the lowest priced dates to fly to your destination. For driving directions see the Panama City Beach website . Where to Stay in Panama City Beach: Panama City Beach is a beachfront town, so it’s of course best to stay close to the beach. I stayed in a seaside condo at Seychelles Beach Resort by Wyndham Vacation Rentals and it was perfectly located, plus had its own pool and a full kitchen.

beach tourism city

Hampton Inn & Suites Beachfront (moderate) is a great choice if you are looking for more of a hotel than condo. For something on the less expensive side, try the Carillon Beach Resort Inn (budget). Also search some great deals on hotels of your choice at Booking.com . If you’re looking for more of a home atmosphere (or are traveling with a group of people), head over to VRBO that has houses, apartments and even just a room for rent in every price range.

Getting Around: Renting a car in Panama City Beach is the best to really experience the island and RentalCars.com has some great deals. If you are not renting a car, there are a few other options. It is possible to get around by taxi, but that can get quite expensive (especially if you want to check all the things to do in Panama City Beach off this bucket list). If you have more time, another choice would be the Bay Town Trolly which runs between the beaches for $1.50 per trip (or $4.00 for a day pass).

I will keep this in mind for Florida trip. Thanks for the list

Yes! Love this! PCB baby!

I used to live in Florida and I honestly I had no idea that PCB had so much to offer. I especially appreciate the tips like time-wait, etc. So helpful!! Thank you.

Thank you for sharing! I have been to PCB several times in past years and it has always been one of my favorite beaches to visit! Thank you for the tips! I, too, was not aware of all of the attractions available to visitors!

PCB definitely has some of the most beautiful US Gulf Coast beaches. Love thee sand there.

I’m not sure when the last time you were on Shell Island, but we were just there a few weeks ago, and did NOT find one shell. Very disappointing. We walked about a 1/2 mile and nothing. :(

Oh no! I’m so sorry to hear that. I was there a couple years ago and found many. Thanks for letting me know!

Malaysia's $100 billion ghost town really wants to draw in tourists. It's not working.

beach tourism city

Wendy Noble lives 15 minutes away from Malaysia's Forest City , across the border in Singapore. One Friday, after a tiring week at graduate school, all the 25-year-old wanted was to lounge by a beach.

A quick scroll through online photos of a pristine beach and luxurious golf resort inspired her and her roommate, Ree Nemis, to head to Forest City the following day.

Country Garden, one of the largest developers in China, spent $100 billion building Forest City . The developer promoted it as a "living paradise" meant to house 700,000 people in luxury high-rise condominiums and villas.

The reality turned out to be different. Today, Forest City is a ghost town — one of several abandoned or near-abandoned housing projects in the Malaysian state of Johor, and part of Country Garden's portfolio of problems . The Chinese developer had over $190 billion in liabilities as of June, is seeing massive sales slumps , and contributes to China's ongoing real-estate crisis .

Forest City has shown it wants to shed its reputation as a ghost town, writing in a press release in March 2023 that it's a place to experience "coastal resort life" and branding itself as a "popular short-haul tourist destination." Forest City added in the press release that at least 15,000 people had visited its local waterpark from August to September 2022.

"The destination has been attracting not only local travelers but also many tourists coming from afar," Syarul Izam, the vice president of Forest City, said in the press release.

But this hasn't done much to transform its image.

I first visited Forest City for BI in May 2022, shortly after Malaysia opened international borders to quarantine-free travel.

Back then, rows of skyscrapers gave way to a nearly empty beach. I saw roads that didn't have a single car on them and just a handful of people in the development's mall. The nearby hotel looked abandoned, with dragonflies breeding in the discolored swimming pool.

Given Forest City's ongoing attempts to draw in tourists, I decided to visit again this year.

The Malaysian state of Johor received 16.6 million tourists last year . I took a 30-minute car ride across the border from Singapore, through Johor, and into the estate one weekend in early March.

The facilities that looked run down in 2022 were now in better shape. The pool was available for hotel guests to use.

Over the 48 hours I spent there, I saw several dozen people at the development's public attractions, which include the waterpark, artificial beach, and mall. Many of them were speaking Malay.

It was more people than I saw two years earlier — but it still felt like a ghost town.

One of the difficulties of reporting on Forest City is that official data on visitor and resident numbers is hard to come by. Country Garden, which has a 60% stake in the estate, did not respond to multiple requests for comment from BI. The remaining 40% of the estate is owned by Sultan Ibrahim, who was crowned the king of Malaysia in January. Representatives for Sultan Ibrahim did not immediately respond to a request for comment from BI.

In September, Forest City told Reuters that some 55,000 people visit its showroom each month and said the two hotels on site are "always fully booked." I visited Forest City's golf resort — one of the two hotels in the estate — and found several dozen people dining and checking in there. But around the area where the showroom is located — a mile away from the beach and waterpark — there were only a handful of people, mostly families looking for a spot to have a picnic.

Tourism numbers aren't the only ones hurting: The estate is also having trouble enticing and holding onto residents.

In 2022, one expert familiar with Johor's real estate market told me that several thousand people were living in Forest City. In August, Country Garden told Bloomberg there were 9,000 residents living there. In September, Country Garden told Reuters some 28,000 properties have been built so far. The developer did not state how many properties it plans to build.

Adilah Zain, a professor of tourism at MARA Technological University in Malaysia, told me there's at least one bright spot in Forest City's tourism outlook.

"Forest City is able to attract the weekend tourists," Adilah said, referring to tourists like Noble and Nemis.

In recent months, the development has held events, including golf tournaments and triathlons, to try to draw visitors. The weekend of my visit, Challenge Malaysia, a local triathlon, was being held at the beach. Photos posted online by the event's organizer showed about a hundred people participating in the race.

I spoke to several people who traveled to Forest City for the triathlon. Shawn and Gary, Malaysians who appeared to be in their late 20s, told me they had traveled six hours to Forest City from their homes in Kuala Lumpur to take part in the race.

"I didn't know what to expect," Shawn said of Forest City. "We've heard it's quite run down, and it turned out it's not that bad, but I'd rather go somewhere else if not for the event."

"I wouldn't come here. There's nothing here. It's quite dead," he added when I asked him if he would return.

One entrepreneur who owns a food business in Forest City said that for them, tourism doesn't translate into much profit.

"They come to the beach but don't spend a cent," the entrepreneur, who declined to be named for privacy reasons, told me.

"There's no point if it's crowded and the people don't spend," they said, adding that many visitors bring their own food rather than spend at eateries in the area.

One attraction that appeared to be pulling visitors — and has gotten them to spend money — is Forest City's golf resort, which has 298 rooms and cost almost $600 million to construct .

Adilah said local golfers and tourists have been buying packages to play golf. There's no official data on how many people have stayed at the hotel since it opened in September 2018, but I saw at least 50 guests — a mix of golfers and locals on family holidays — at the hotel's lobby and swimming pool.

Chandran, 28, a tourist from Singapore who had dined in one of the handful of eateries at the golf resort, said he thought it looked modern and luxurious.

"Next time, I want to book the suite at the hotel. My friend said he booked a room after he saw an advertisement for it on Booking.com , and it's great," he said, adding that the nightly rates were much cheaper than in Singapore. A night at the hotel starts at around $90.

As for the rest of Forest City, though, Chandran had a different take.

"It's a bit creepy. Most of the houses are empty," he added.

The best hotels in palm beach for enjoying the resort city ‘palm royale’-style.

The area — portrayed in the new Apple TV+ show — is booming as West Palm Beach grows, more private clubs open and an even a 40-acre planned mini-city is in development: "It reminds me of L.A. in the ‘80s, when people were discovering new neighborhoods."

The pool at The Breakers, where rooms through April start at $1,190. Other luxe hotels in Palm Beach include the chic Brazilian Court (with a Café Boulud) and Eau Palm Beach, with its whimsical spa and lanai rooms that open onto the beach.

Beyond the vast windows of Palm Beach’s iconic Breakers resort , the ocean sparkled as women in designer florals paraded under the lobby’s vaulted, hand-frescoed ceilings. They were headed to network with Martha Stewart and Tommy Hilfiger and swap Hermès and Gucci purses for charity at a $600-per-ticket “Old Bags” luncheon.

Sylvia isn’t the only one who thinks that. Palm Beach doesn’t like change, and that’s no doubt why Thomas Keller, who recently purchased the beloved bistro Ta-boo, which closed after 82 years on Worth Avenue, has decided to leave the name and signage when he reopens it next season. Things remain much as they were when socialite C.Z. Guest was photographed at her seaside pool by Slim Aarons (whom Sylvia admits to being obsessed with), and men still sport blazers and bright-hued pants as they dine at restaurants with lush gardens like Bice Ristorante and Renato’s .

In West Palm’s historic El Cid neighborhood, retail shops are popping up and historic Mediterranean houses have doubled in price since the start of the pandemic, but still cost a fraction of those on the ocean side.

“The houses have a similar feel to some on the island,” says Lisa Wilkinson , executive director of luxury sales for Douglas Elliman Palm Beach. She shares that a four-bedroom historic Mediterranean jewel box that was priced at just over $3 million at the beginning of the pandemic is now trading for $6.4 million.

On the relatively undeveloped north end of West Palm, major change is coming as well: A new condo tower, Olara, will house a restaurant from José Andrés and units starting at $2.5 million; the Cipriani family is opening a Mr. C hotel; and an entirely new 40-acre mini-city, Nora , will be built from the ground up, including a hotel with a restaurant, plus a rooftop pool concept from Richard Born and Sean MacPherson (The Chelsea, The Bowery).

Ned Grace, one of the developers who conceived Nora, feels the hotel (tentatively called The Nora) will be a much-needed addition. “We are about $500 per night, two minutes from Palm Beach, and it will be super high quality in a place that hasn’t necessarily seen that yet,” he maintained.  “It will be the Chateau Marmont of West Palm.”

McPherson recalls that when he attended Santa Monica High School, Venice was still rough around the edges. “Real estate people used to call it Marina del Rey adjacent, so people made T-shirts that said, ‘Venice is not Marina del Rey.’ Well, West Palm Beach is not Palm Beach.”

Where to Stay in Palm Beach and West Palm

In the past decade, the number of visitors to the Palm Beach area has more than doubled, reaching nearly 10 million in 2023, according to tourist organization Discover the Palm Beaches.

“We do expect Palm Royale will generate a ‘set-jetting’ bump in interest from a whole new audience,” says CEO and president Milton Segarra.

Palm Beach island — whose famous residents include Rod Stewart, billionaire Nelson Peltz (whose daughter Nicola Peltz married Brooklyn Beckham at his posh estate) and designer Tom Ford (who’s a regular at Sant Ambroeus) — has some of the most luxurious resorts in the United States.

The Breakers: The grand Breakers, erected in the late 19th century, occupies 140 acres of coastline. (Rooms available through thebreakers.com and booking.com .)

The Colony Hotel: The fun-filled, Spanish-style Colony Hotel, built in 1947, features a resurrection of New York watering hole Swifty’s. (Rooms available through thecolonypalmbeach.com and booking.com .)

Eau Palm Beach Resort and & Spa: At its southern extension, the Eau Palm Beach Resort & Spa is a magnet, with its whimsical spa and lanai rooms that open onto the beach. (Rooms available through eaupalmbeach.com and booking.com.) In season, rooms at most of these properties can run well over $1,000 per night. (Oetker, which operates Le Bristol and the Hotel du Cap, will open the Vineta later this year in Palm Beach.)

AKA West Palm: In West Palm, just a stroll over the middle bridge, the less opulent new AKA, which has modern suites complete with kitchens and washer/dryers, runs about $350 per night. (Rooms available through stayaka.com and booking.com .)

Hilton West Palm Beach: Across from Kravis Center for the Perming Arts, the Hilton, where rates start at $300, has just completed a $25 million renovation. (Rooms available through hilton.com and booking.com .)

PGA National Resort: Farther north, in Palm Beach Gardens, PGA National Resort was renovated to the tune of $100 million, with new Serena & Lily-designed cottages added to the golf course. (Rooms available through pgaresort.com and booking.com .)

Renaissance Boca Raton Hotel: The town has also unveiled a new “midtown” with a Renaissance hotel that has a pool scene, Wet by Meat Market, to rival those in Miami. (Rooms available through marriott.com and booking.com .)

Also new in Boca Raton’s midtown are a Fiolina Pasta restaurant from D.C. chef Fabio Trabocchi, whose Washington restaurant Fiola earned a Michelin star, and branches of New York restaurants Limani and Gallaghers.

The Private Club Scene

The new guard in West Palm Beach is paying homage to the area’s tradition of private clubs, with Nora co-founder Ned Grace and partners planning a members spot. They are in talks to open it with Austin hospitality entrepreneur Larry McGuire, who owns Clarke’s in Aspen and just purchased the Aspen Chalet. Called the 1925 Club, the West Palm Beach club will have a much larger reach than the restrictive island spots, and will be open day and night for working, networking and dining.

Grace also recently opened West Palm’s Cove Club, where the initiation is $15,000, decidedly less than that of Palm Beach’s famed havens. (“That’s the price of a dinner,” scoffs a longtime local of the Cove Club’s fee; memberships at established Palm Beach clubs can hit $550,000.) Mr. C is planning a private club as well.

However long you’re visiting Moscow for, you must set aside some time to soak up the archetypal image of Russia’s capital with the glistening rainbow roofs of St Basil’s Cathedral. The onion-shaped domes were designed to make the building look like flames on a bonfire. The cathedral was commissioned in the 1500s by Ivan the Terrible and according to legend, the Tsar thought it so beautiful he ordered that the architect be blinded so they would never surpass this creation.

Designed to look like its predecessor, the modern building also contains the icon Christ Not Painted by Hand by Sorokin, which survived the demolition of the original cathedral. The cathedral was the site of feminist punk collective Pussy Riot’s 2012 protest that led to the imprisonment of several members.

Lying at the heart of Moscow, the Red Square and the Kremlin are just two of the must-see tourist attractions; they are the historical, political and spiritual heart of the city – and indeed Russia itself.

Arbat Street

10. Pushkin Museum

Pushkin Museum

Despite its name, the Pushkin Museum of Fine Arts actually has no connection at all to the famous poet other than that it was named in his honor after his death. A delight to visit, its extensive collection focuses on European art with masterpieces by Botticelli, Rembrandt, and van Gogh all featuring.

Sculptures, graphic art, paintings and more can be found in its beautiful galleries; various sections look at themes and epochs such as the Renaissance, the Dutch Golden Age, and Byzantine art.

Among the many highlights are the clownish characters which can be found in Cezanne’s Fastnacht (Mardi Gras) and the twirling ballerinas who look so elegant in Degas’ Blue Dancers. Picasso’s Young acrobat on a Ball is also well worth checking out for its interesting use of shapes and colors.

9. Christ The Savior Cathedral

Christ The Savior Cathedral

This gorgeous Russian Orthodox cathedral is located on the banks of the Moskva River, just a stone’s throw away from the Kremlin.

The church as it stands today was consecrated in 2000, as the original church that stood here was destroyed on the command of Josef Stalin in 1931 due to the anti-religious campaign.

With its delightful golden dome, spires and dazzling white facades, the Christ the Savior Cathedral is stunning. The interior is just as captivating to wander around, with its beautifully tiled floors and impressive altar.

Whether it’s cycling, table tennis or yoga that you are after or beach volleyball and rowing, Gorky Park certainly has it. In winter, there is a huge ice rink for visitors to enjoy.

4. Bolshoi Theatre

Bolshoi Theatre

The Bolshoi Theatre is the main theater in the country. The amazing opera and ballet performances it has put on over the centuries go a long way in explaining Russia’s rich history of performing arts.

While the Bolshoi Ballet Company was established in 1776, the theater itself was opened in 1825. The glittering, six-tier auditorium is lavishly and decadently decorated; it is a fitting setting for the world-class performances that take place on its stage.

Spending a night watching a performance of such classics as The Nutcracker or Swan Lake at the Bolshoi Theatre is sure to be a memorable experience and the beauty all around you only adds to the sense of occasion.

3. Moscow Kremlin

Moscow Kremlin

This famously fortified complex is remarkably home to five palaces and four cathedrals and is the historic, political and spiritual center of the city. The Kremlin serves as the residence for the country’s president. It has been used as a fort, and this fact is made clear by its sheer size. The Kremlin’s outer walls were built in the late 1400s.

Under Ivan III, better known as Ivan the Great, the Kremlin became the center of a unified Russian state, and was extensively remodeled. Three of the Kremlin’s cathedrals date to his reign that lasted from 1462-1505. The Deposition Church and the Palace of Facets were also constructed during this time. The Ivan the Great Bell Tower was built in 1508. It is the tallest tower at the Kremlin with a height of 266 feet (81 meters).

Joseph Stalin removed many of the relics from the tsarist regimes. However, the Tsar Bell, the world’s largest bell, and the Tsar Cannon, the largest bombard by caliber in the world, are among the remaining items from that era. The Kremlin Armory is one of Moscow’s oldest museums as it was established more than 200 years ago. Its diamond collection is impressive.

The Kremlin’s gardens – Taynitsky, Grand Kremlin Public and Alexander – are beautiful. The Kremlin has also served as the religious center of the country, and there is a tremendous number of preserved churches and cathedrals here. The collections contained within the museums include more than 60,000 historical, cultural and artistic monuments. Those who enjoy the performing arts will want to consider attending a ballet or concert at the State Kremlin Palace. Completed in 1961, it is the only modern building in the Kremlin.

2. Red Square

Red Square

Lying at the heart of Moscow, Red Square is the most important and impressive square in the city. It is one of the most popular tourist attractions due to its wealth of historical sights and cultural landmarks.

Drenched in history, the huge square is home to incredible sights such as the Kremlin, St. Basil’s Cathedral and Lenin’s Mausoleum, among others. Consequently, it is not to be missed when in Moscow as it really is home to the city’s most stunning monuments.

It is here that many important moments in Russian history took place; the former marketplace has hosted everything from Tsar’s coronations and public ceremonies to rock concerts and Soviet military parades. Wandering around the massive square is a humbling experience and undoubtedly one of the highlights the city has to offer.

1. Saint Basil’s Cathedral

Saint Basil's Cathedral

Located in the impressive Red Square, St. Basil’s Cathedral is gorgeous; its delightful spires appear as if out of a fairytale. The most recognizable building in the country, the cathedral is very much a symbol of Russia. No visit to Moscow is complete without having taken in its unique and distinctive features.

Ivan the Terrible ordered the cathedral’s construction in the mid-16th century, and legend holds that Ivan put out the architect’s eyes so that he would be unable to build another cathedral more glorious than St. Basil’s. Designed to resemble the shape of a bonfire in full flame, the architecture is not only unique to the period in which it was built but to any subsequent period. For various reasons, both Napoleon and Stalin wanted to destroy the cathedral but fortunately did not succeed.

Known for its various colors, shapes and geometric patterns, St. Basil’s Cathedral houses nine different chapels that are all connected by a winding labyrinth of corridors and stairways. On the lower floor, St. Basil’s Chapel contains a silver casket bearing the body of St. Basil the Blessed.

Throughout the cathedral are many beautiful murals, frescoes, wooden icons and other art works and artifacts. Outside the cathedral is a lovely garden with the bronze Monument to Minin and Pozharsky, who rallied an all-volunteer Russian army against Polish invaders during a period of the late 16th century known as the Times of Troubles.

Missing Mosquito Beach sign is on its way home

For the last 20 years, visitors to a secluded part of James Island saw a sign made from a vibrant blue surfboard with pink and yellow stripes that said, “Welcome to Mosquito Beach, est. 1953.”

For the last few days, the sign has been missing. But no more, according to an area resident, former James Island Public Service District Commissioner Cubby Wilder, who lives nearby on Sol Legare Road.

Wilder told the Charleston City Paper this afternoon that the sign is on the way back to Charleston County after it apparently was discovered in an Upstate dorm room of a college student who was thought to be here on spring break last week.  Charleston County Sheriff’s Office spokesman Alexis Douglas confirmed this afternoon that the sign is headed back to James Island from Clemson after authorities received a tip.

Wilder, who also has served as president of the Mosquito Beach Business Association, flagged down a Charleston County deputy on the afternoon of April 5, saying he last saw the sign at the corner of Mosquito Beach and Sol Legare roads on the day before.

Mosquito, what?

Mosquito Beach was a gathering place for African American residents and visitors during segregation and has historical significance as a community hub.

As described in a 2020 City Paper story, the Historic Charleston Foundation described how a 2017 grant from National Park Service helped it document the James Island community’s impact during the civil rights movement.

“Out of the five historic ‘black beaches’ in Charleston County, Mosquito Beach is the only that remains virtually intact, preserving an area that serves as a reminder of the American South during the years of Jim Crow when public beaches were segregated, reserved for white residents,” the story said. “In September 2019, the site was listed in the National Register of Historic Places.”

No longer isolated

beach tourism city

Ernest Parks, curator of the Seashore Farmers Lodge Museum and Cultural Center on Sol Legare Road, said the once-quiet community is no longer isolated.

“Outsiders are coming in, and they see what they want,” he said. It is unlikely the person who took the sign is from the community, he said. A Sol Legare resident, Parks stressed, “would not steal or desecrate one of the gems of Sol Legare.”

A Follow Beach artist, Parks said, donated the surfboard sign to the community about two decades ago.
