Angkor Wat shutterstock_186291863.jpg

The Kingdom of Cambodia is a country in south-east Asia bordered by Thailand, Laos and Vietnam, lying entirely within the tropics. It is best known for its remarkable temple complex of Angkor Wat, a UNESCO World Heritage Site that is on just about everybody’s “bucket list.” It should, however, be equally well known for an extraordinary array of exciting wildlife, much of which is extremely rare, and for gloriously rich and scenic forests and wetlands. This country truly is a thrilling, up and coming destination for ecotourists, as well as those who enjoy novel cultures and breathtaking architectural marvels.

What’s Special about its Wildlife?

Besides a typically high tropical biodiversity, Cambodia boasts a remarkable number of endangered animals and birds. Species such as Giant and White-shouldered Ibis are almost impossible to see elsewhere, while Bengal Florican, Milky Stork and the trio of endangered Asian vultures – Red-headed, White-rumped and Slender-billed – are found in encouraging numbers. In the forests of the south there are treasures such as Asian Elephants and a suite of exciting primates.

Wild Cambodia

With the largest area of unbroken rainforest in mainland Southeast Asia, Cambodia is a haven for bird and animal life.

Cambodia is home to some of the most passionate and essential conservation efforts we've experienced; we designed this route to take you deep into wilderness where your visit will also help to ensure its survival. From lush, forested river camps to wetland havens for wild birds – this trip is full of rare opportunities to see some of the world’s critically endangered species in their natural environment.

Transport in detail

All transfers are by private car through Cambodia’s beautiful rural countryside. We love the journeys almost as much as the destinations.

What's great

You’ll visit the best wildlife spotting destinations within Cambodia.

Features beautiful rural landscapes; palm fringed rice paddies, crumbling ancient temples, quaint villages & towns, lush rainforests. Amazing for keen photographers!

By staying in wildlife sanctuaries and visiting conservation projects, your trip directly benefits programmes to protect Cambodia’s wild places

We can easily extend this itinerary with time on the beach if you fancy some rest and relaxation before returning home

Things to consider

The best time of year for wildlife encounters is December to April. November and May are shoulder seasons for wildlife viewing, still good times to travel

You’ll need to be fit and active to manage activities which involve walking and cycling over rough terrain

Accommodation in the wildlife sanctuaries is basic without air-conditioning, but this is all part of their charm and means they have a low impact on the environment

There are some long journeys by road but this gives you a chance to see great swathes of Cambodian scenery

The experience

We custom-make our holidays, so what’s written in the itinerary below is just an example of what we can do. Let us know what you’re interested in, and we’ll tailor a trip just for you.

No trip to Cambodia is complete without Angkor. An ancient city built at the zenith of the Khmer Empire, it contains some of the world’s most spectacular monuments. This means Angkor does attract huge crowds, but as this itinerary is all about escaping into nature, your guide will whisk you to under the radar temples best explored by bike. Afterwards, you’ll cycle out to a lovely rural village for lunch in a beautifully preserved Khmer house. On your second day, get up early to see Angkor Wat at sunrise, then visit a conservation centre created in memory of Sam Veasna, a pioneer in the protection of Cambodia’s wildlife - a fitting start to your adventure.

Sam Veasna’s greatest achievement was the rediscovery and protection of the critically endangered Bengal florican. With a bit of luck, you’ll see these birds and other large water species today in a grassland conservation area in Siem Reap province. From here, you’ll venture into the vast savannah of Phnom Tnout Phnom Pok Wildlife Sanctuary. A nature guide who knows this wilderness like the back of his hand will take you on a hike through the dipterocarp forest. You’ll also get to traverse the saddle of a mountain on a pair of 300m ziplines. On the descent, keep your eyes peeled for a cornucopia of butterfly species, as well as silver langurs, sambar deer and banteng (wild cows).

Kulen Promtep Wildlife Sanctuary

Next up is Kulen Promtep Wildlife Sanctuary in the remote northern lowlands. You'll stay in an ecolodge on the banks of a baray, an Angkor era reservoir. This man-made lake is a huge draw for fauna and flora in an otherwise arid region, including the endangered giant ibis, Cambodia’s national bird. You can pick two options from a long menu of experiences here all accompanied by nature specialists. Hike or cycle the trails that lead to temple ruins, or opt to get involved in conservation work, species monitoring and forest patrols. Alternatively, take a boat out with local fishermen to learn their skills. As night falls, head to your terrace to watch the evening wildlife, sundowner in hand.

Koh Trong is a small island in the middle of the Mekong River in Kratie Province. This region is the feeding ground of the elusive Irrawaddy dolphin – your early morning boat trip offers a chance to spot them. The island itself is a gorgeous, sleepy place of thatched roof villages where people make a living rice farming and cultivating pomelo fruit. There are no cars, just a few spluttering mopeds, but the best way to explore is by horse cart or bicycle. At the island temple, a local farmer invites all visitors to plant a tree. In doing so, you’ll be helping to recultivate the once densely forested island, leaving a positive footprint behind you.

Keo Seima Wildlife Sanctuary

At Keo Seima Wildlife Sanctuary, you’ll be on the lookout for the yellow-cheeked crested gibbon. In the early morning their calls echo through the rainforest above the open lounge of your safari-style accommodation. The camp is part of a conservation and species monitoring programme run with the indigenous Bunong community. As well as gibbons, you’ll help Bunong researchers track endangered species such as black-shanked douc langurs and sun bears on a hike through their ancestral homeland. If data is your thing, assist by collecting and analysing camera trap footage, or take a more cultural route by exploring the Bunong’s sacred animist sites deep in the misty jungle.

Continuing your stay in Mondulkiri Province, there are more wildlife projects worthy of support. First up is Dak Dam, a new site for bird watching where you might spot the black eagle, pale-capped pigeon and black-throated sunbird. But we’ve saved the best to last: the Elephant Valley Project. Maltreated elephants from dubious tourism enterprises have been rescued and brought here to live with minimal interference. As a visitor, you’ll get to observe the animals up close in their natural environment, learn about efforts to revive their declining numbers and meet the mahouts who care for these magnificent creatures. Afterwards, a final night in Phnom Penh concludes Wild Cambodia.

Guided by the center, you will receive great insight into the work of the Wildlife Alliance team who protect Cambodia’s wildlife from the threats of poaching, trafficking and cruelty. Depending on availability, activities could include a walk with elephants in the forest, visiting their tiger enclosures and the rehabilitation section of the rescue center which is not open to the general public. There is an opportunity to help feed one of the young residents of the center such as a baby jackal or leopard cat or play with the many mischievous baby macaques.

A picnic lunch is served before exploring the vast water bird aviary, home to some of Cambodia’s rare avian life. Walk around the lakeside where the Sambar deer roam.

Day 4 Drive & Boat Ride to Cardamom Tented Camp

Today you will journey to Botum Sakor National Park , the country’s largest national park. The drive takes about 4 hour from Phnom Penh plus an hour boat ride to the Cardamom Tented Camp, gateway to a home for a rich variety of wildlife and Cambodia’s endangered mammals such as the clouded leopard, Asiatic black bear, Dhole, pileated gibbon and sun bear.

A 3-night stay will allow you more free time to explore on your own the surrounding forest and river areas with hiking or kayaks. You will also learn about Wildlife Alliance’s operations and join a patrol with their Rangers hiking through dense jungle along abandoned poaching and logging trails. Visit the Rangers Station where the confiscated equipment of poachers including traps and improvised hunting rifles are on display. Though rare but possible sightings of wild life in this area include macaque, gibbon, hornbill and many others.

After lunch at the Ranger Station, you can hike or kayak back to camp. Rest of the day is free to relax or participate in other in house activities like visiting one of their wildlife hides or take another hike in the jungle.

Day 6 Cardamom Tented Camp

Today is free to select your preferred activities. You can take an early morning boat ride to see wildlife along the Preak Tachan river, take the kayaks out for a paddle, go on a longer hike in the jungles or relax on the floating pier with binoculars in hand to do some bird watching.

Upon arrival at Siem Reap, you will be welcomed and transferred to your hotel.

Overnight in Siem Reap

Day 8 Full Day Temples by Bike

Today you will explore hidden trails around Ta Prohm and Angor Thom Temple Complex by bicycle with your guide. Take in some of the most beautiful jungle paths between temples that are used by locals in their everyday lives.

Bike past the walls of Banteay Kdei to the North Gate of Ta Prohm. This ‘jungle temple’ has been left the way it was when ‘discovered’ by French explorer Henri Mouhot in 1860. Famed for its the tentacle-like tree roots strangling the surviving stones and Hollywood movie “Tomb Raider” with Angelina Jolie.

Then continue past Takeo Temple and turn left into the jungle just after Chao Say Devada temple. This brings you down a beautiful jungle path to the East Gate, or Gate of the Dead. Then, ascend the walls of Angkor Thom and ride around the southeast quadrant to stop at atmospheric Prasat Chrung, a seldom-visited temple overlooking the vast moat of Angkor Thom.

Continue riding from the South Gate to the Bayon , explore the main temples of Angkor Thom on foot, including Baphuon, Phimeanakas, Preah Palilay, Terrace of the Leper King and Preah Pithu. Explore Bayon, the temple famous for its enigmatic faces of Lokesvara, the Buddha of Compassion, said to bear an uncanny resemblance to the great King Jayavarman VII himself. Transfer back to your hotel by car after the tour.

Day 9 Wildlife Rescue Center & Kulen Elephant Forest

Morning drive about an hour to Angkor Center for Conservation of Biodiversity , an excellent wildlife rescue and rehabilitation center. This non-profit is involved conserving Cambodia’s natural habitat through research, education, breeding and reintroduction of endangered species. You can expect to see a wide range of rescued and rehabilitating wildlife, visits are permitted only at 9am or 1pm led by their in-house guides.

Then continue about 40min drive to Kulen Elephant Forest , created to provide a retirement home for the working elephants that were providing elephant rides around Angkor Temples. Those rides have ceased operations and currently the camp hosts 14 elephants who are free to roam within a protected forest area of 1100 acres. This is a group tour of maximum 12 participants and the visit will include walking with the herd through the forest, watching them bathe and participating in feeding activities. You will be shown around the compound by an expert who will share interesting insights to elephant behavior.

Day 10 Sunrise Angkor & Floating Village Kayaking

Rise early morning with your guide and visit the majestic temples of Angkor . Believed to be the world’s largest religious building, this temple was built in the 12th century by King Suryavarman II.

Afternoon drive about an hour along country roads to the boat pier at Mechrey Village . Some stretch of the road is unpaved and could be a little bumpy. On arrival, meet your friendly kayaking guide and board a local motorboat to the floating village for kayaking.

As you paddle through the floating village, you will be greeted by smiley villagers as your guide explain the local livelihood and customs. Depending on the water levels, you may have a chance to kayak through a flooded forest and chance to view rare birds in this region, typically possible between July through February. Later, kayak to a spot for spectacular sunset views over the great Tonle Sap before returning to Siem Reap by car.

Daytrips to the Phnom Tamao wildlife Rescue Center outside Phnom Penh, Cambodia

Until further notice this tour is only available for groups of at least 5 people

Full day trip to the Phnom Tamao Wildlife Rescue Center

Spend a day at this rescue center, where you will meet endangered & rescued animals upclose. This rescue center is considered one of the best in Asia. No small and dirty enclosures here. All animals are wel take care off and we can tell you all about them and their histories.

The Phnom Tamao Wildlife Rescue Center is home to over 1,200 animals and is the biggest rescue center in Cambodia. Here you can see an array of native rescued wildlife, including Gibbons, Sun Bears, Tigers, Elephants and many more.

We have been coming here for 14 years and we are intimately familiair with all the animals. Spend a day outside the city, try some delicious homecooked lunch and probably learn about some animals you never even knew existed.

Personal & Knowledgeable

Petting suarez

We have extensive knowledge of the animals and their behaviour. We know when they are active and where they like to hide. We know which gibbons are cheeky hair pullers and which tigers are likely to spray on you.

Don't just learn the basic facts of the animals. We can tell you how they got here, how they are being cared for and what will happen to them.

Get up-close with the animals

Crocodile

Some gibbons just love backrubs, so give it to them. Pet deers, feed otters and probably be chased around by monkeys.

Unlike a zoo, you will be able to get extremely close to a lot of the animals, but in a responsible way. Animals are never handled or forced in any way, but most animals are happy to come close by themselves.

A delicious homecooked lunch

Lunch

Leave the city for some fresh air

Area

The rescue center is an hour away from Phnom Penh and is build at the edge of a protected forest. You will spend a day walking through the forest with animals at every turn, hearing birds and gibbons singing in the distance.

Some details

This tour is suitable for all ages, but some effort is required. You wil spend most of your time at the park on foot and you will be in the sun. The animals will make you dirty, the roads are bumpy and if it rains, you get wet. It this doesn't like sound like your idea of a good time, don't do it! However, if you want a special experience, can handle getting hot and dirty and want to meet some amazing people working with incredible animals, this this is the trip for you.

The tour takes almost a full day. We organize trips 3 days a week, on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays. We require at least 2 people to do a tour and we usually take at most 8 people. Single travellers can of course join a group already going and special arrangements can sometimes be made both with regards to the day or to the number of people, so don't hesitate to contact us if that is the case.

Pretty much everything you need throughout the day is included for you. This means transport to and from the park, entrance fee, a guided tour, lunch and water. You will also get a kroma (khmer scarf) at the beginning of the day that you can keep.

You should wear comfortable footwear. While the terrain isn't very difficult, you will be on your feet a lot. Sandals or slippers are fine. Sunscreen or a hat to protect you from the sun is recommended. Bring clothes that can get dirty. You can of course stay away from the animals to try and stay clean, but where's the fun in that?

  • HOW TO HELP

wildlife tours cambodia

Cambodia Wildlife Sanctuary is a project that spans 32,000 acres, on the edge of the Kulen Promtep Wildlife Sanctuary. This sanctuary is one of the largest protected areas in Cambodia and is home to several endangered species, including the giant ibis, banteng, Eld’s deer, sarus crane, monkeys, gibbons and several turtle species. Once densely forested and rich in biodiversity, this area has been significantly impacted by illegal logging and poaching. The project is focused on protecting and restoring the jungle, located an hour and half north of the famous Angkor Wat temple complex.

Cambodia Wildlife Sanctuary provides a safe home in nature to rescued elephants, including two females, Di-Ploh and Sarai Mia, who have lived at the sanctuary for several years and are free to roam the jungle during the day, foraging on natural vegetation. In November 2020, they were joined by the now famous Kaavan, who was rescued from a zoo in Pakistan. It is wonderful to see this majestic bull elephant enjoying his life in nature with the freedom to explore his jungle home and do what comes naturally.

wildlife tours cambodia

Di-Ploh was born in 1980. After a life in the logging industry, she was rescued from Mondulkiri Province, Cambodia in February 2017. It took her a while to adapt to her new life at Cambodia Wildlife Sanctuary. When she first arrived she took very long excursions and would sometimes walk beyond the safety of our extensive boundary. She has since settled into her home and happily spends her days wandering and foraging in the jungle. Di-Poh is quite an independent elephant and is generally calm and graceful. At this time, she is solitary in nature, and is enjoying her more natural life at Cambodia Wildlife Sanctuary.

wildlife tours cambodia

Sarai-Mia was born in 1992. She was rescued from logging in Mondulkiri Province, Cambodia in February 2017 at the same time as Di-Ploh.  On arrival at CWS, Sarai-Mia met Arun Reah, with whom she became best friends. These 2 elephants were never far apart and displayed dramatic antics and vocalizations whenever they lost sight of one another in the forest. Sadly, Arun Reah passed away in September 2021, leaving her friend in mourning.   Sarai-Mia is now enjoying a peaceful life, freely roaming throughout the sanctuary during the day, foraging on natural vegetation. She is full of energy and can often be very vocal when she is in a good mood.

wildlife tours cambodia

Kaavan is a male Asian elephant who was born in 1985. On November 30 2020, the now famous Kaavan, dubbed ‘the loneliest elephant in the world’ arrived at Cambodia Wildlife Sanctuary. Rescued from deplorable conditions at the Islamabad zoo in Pakistan, he was flown to CWS thanks to the support of singer, Cher, Free the Wild, Four Paws, together with many other people and organizations who campaigned for Kaavan’s freedom. Kaavan is the first bull elephant to live at the sanctuary and is enjoying his new life exploring and foraging in his jungle home. Kaavan has now started the next chapter of his life – one with freedom, love and kindness.

Volunteer with Elephants

Volunteer at cambodia wildlife sanctuary.

Volunteers who visit Cambodia Wildlife Sanctuary have the special experience of walking with the elephants as they wander the jungle during the day, observing them foraging on natural vegetation, drinking from and swimming in one of the damns. Volunteers help care for the elephants by cutting and preparing food for them and cleaning their night shelters.

You will also have the chance to help to reforest the area by keeping records of identified species, collecting seeds, and planting saplings. Volunteers assist in the care of injured and orphaned animals who have been rescued so that they can be rehabilitated and returned to their jungle home. Volunteers also help care for the domestic animals who have found a home at the sanctuary, including dogs, cats, and cows as well as lending a hand with the sustainable farming of vegetables and fruit.

Other volunteer activities include teaching English at a local school and working with the local community to establish educational outreach programs for children. The ongoing support of volunteers is vital to ensuring the project’s continued success – caring for the rescued animals and protecting and regenerating this important natural habitat so that it can sustain a diverse range of wildlife for generations to come.

Join our eco-volunteer program and play a vital role in caring for the rescued elephants and helping to protect and regenerate a beautiful natural habitat so that native species can repopulate the wildlife reserve

The rescue of kaavan.

On the 29th November, Kaavan, a bull elephant who had spent 3 decades in a zoo in Islamabad, Pakistan, was rescued and brought to live at Cambodia Wildlife Sanctuary. Kaavan, who was captured from the wild, was sent to Pakistan as gift from the Sri Lankan government  when he was just one year old.  At the age of six he was joined by a female elephant from Bangladesh, named Saheli, who he lived with for the next 22 years before her death in 2012. Kaavan was deeply saddened by the passing of his friend and became more stressed, aggressive, and depressed. Living alone and often chained, Kaavan’s condition and health deteriorated and he became known as the world’s loneliest elephant.

A student in Pakistan, Dr Samar Khan became aware of Kaavan’s plight, which started a long struggle to free Kaavan from his life of suffering. When American pop star, Cher heard about Kaavan, she and her organization, Free the Wild, began campaigning for Kaavan, and in 2020 the Islamabad High Court ruled that Kaavan should be relocated. With the help of Four Paws and Free The Wild, Kaavan was moved to Cambodia Wildlife Sanctuary, where for the first time in many years, he was able to meet and interact with other elephants.

Thanks to the support of Save Elephant Foundation, Trunks Up, and Gentle Giants, a temporary enclosure was built for Kaavan, while his larger jungle home was under construction. Kaavan has adjusted well to his new life at Cambodia Wildlife Sanctuary. On 15 July 2021 Kaavan moved to his new jungle home where he will finally have the chance to roam, forage, and be an elephant again. Thank you to Cher, Saengduean Lek Chailert, Darrick Thomson, David Casselman and all the people who helped to rescue Kaavan and who have supported the building of Kaavan’s new home over the past year.

Life During Covid at Cambodia Wildlife Sanctuary

This sanctuary in Cambodia was home to three beautiful female elephants – Di-Poh, Arun Reah, and Sarai Mia at the beginning of the Covid crisis. Sadly, Arun Reah, a senior elephant, passed away quite suddenly in October 2021. Before Covid, volunteers would visit CWS regularly to help care for and support the elephants, together with many other rescued animals who live at the sanctuary. There were no visitors or volunteers at Cambodia Wildlife Sanctuary for almost 2 years but now the sanctuary has reopened. The elephants spend their days foraging in the jungle and cooling off in the ponds and recently have been getting to know Kaavan, a bull elephant rescued in November 2020.

  • A massive survey in Cambodia's Peam Krasop sanctuary and Koh Kapid reserve uncovered an astonishing 700 species.
  • Mangroves play a vital role as breeding grounds for fish and natural coastal protectors while facing the threat of land-use charges.
  • The findings showcase the urgent need to protect these sanctuaries, as well as the rich biodiversity it houses.
  • A few recommendations made by the report include maintaining forest cover and allowing natural regeneration.

The Mangroves Working Group , led by Friends of Ocean Action in collaboration with 1t.org , aims to raise ambition and deliver action towards the conservation and restoration of mangrove forests, by enabling companies and investors to enhance the blue carbon market with support from non-profit leaders and experts.

Objectives include delivering actions towards the group’s ambition, knowledge sharing and capacity-building among members, connecting investors with projects, and, ultimately, enabling the flow of more blue carbon credits into the voluntary carbon market.

In one of the most detailed surveys ever undertaken, hundreds of animal species — from birds to primates to web-footed wildcats — have been discovered in a Cambodian mangrove forest .

Team leader Stefanie Rog — a conservation biologist and senior program manager with Fauna & Flora International, which funded the study — recorded an astounding variety of species at the Peam Krasop sanctuary and adjacent Koh Kapid Ramsar wildlife reserve in Cambodia. Some of the animals they encountered included the critically endangered Sunda pangolin; endangered long-tailed macaques, large-spotted civet and hairy-nosed otters ; the vulnerable fishing cat; and 74 fish species, a press release from Fauna & Flora said.

“We found 700 different species in these mangrove forests but we suspect we have not even scratched the surface,” Rog said, as The Guardian reported. “If we could look at the area in even greater depth we would find 10 times more, I am sure.”

Mangrove forests are found in tropical and subtropical coastal areas. They are specially adapted to flourish in both salt and brackish water , but 40 percent of them have been decimated in the past few decades due to land use changes such as agriculture and development.

Mangroves provide a variety of ecosystem services, such as acting as fish nurseries and reducing the impact of storm surges and the resulting damage to coastlines.

“We found young barracudas, snappers and groupers in the waters here,” Rog said, as reported by The Guardian. “They are clearly important breeding places for fish and provide local communities with food as well as providing stock for commercial fisheries.”

The survey was led by Fishing Cat Ecological Enterprise and Fauna & Flora, along with the Royal University of Agriculture’s faculty of fisheries and aquaculture and the Ministry of Environment.

The survey team conducted their field research during the dry and wet seasons of 2023. They set 57 camera traps across the protected area over 4,000 trap nights, the report said.

The experts also carried out targeted surveys that focused on reptiles , bats, amphibians, juvenile fish, invertebrates and plants .

“[T]hese results evidence an important array of wildlife in need of protection,” the report said. “Overall, priority should be given to maintaining forest condition and cover within the sanctuary, since the loss of older, larger trees (which typically provide more cavities, hollows and crevices) particularly threatens foliage-roosting species, whereas fragmentation of mature forest stands erodes the connectivity between suitable habitat. Cleared areas of mixed mangrove that have been abandoned should be left to regenerate naturally, as these areas are connected to natural seedling recruitment. Protection and patrolling activities should be conducted regularly in order to make sure that no further disturbance to these areas takes place.”

The rare fishing cat has webbed toes, which the large feline uses to swim through waters surrounding the mangroves, from which they hunt for fish and rats.

A fishing cat in the Peam Krasop wildlife sanctuary in the Cambodian mangroves.

“It’s very rare to see a fishing cat and we have only found out that they are in the forest from the photographs taken by our camera traps,” Rog said, as The Guardian reported. “Mangroves are places of roots and mud and they are difficult for humans to get into, which is why they provide precious sanctuaries for these vulnerable animals.”

The survey found 150 bird species, 15 of which are on the International Union for Conservation of Nature’s Red List as near-threatened or endangered.

“A mangrove forest relies on all the interconnected relationships between species and if you start taking away some of those species, then slowly you will lose the functioning of the forest,” Rog said, as reported by The Guardian. “[Mangrove forests] are so much more than just an ecosystem that provides a carbon -saving service or coastal protection. They are actually beautiful in their own right. For me, there is no better feeling than to be in this unique, mythical forest, knowing there is still so much more to explore – that there is another world waiting for further discovery.”

The researchers said calling attention to some of the incredible diversity of species who live in this watery wonderland can help support conservation and future investigation of a uniquely rich ecosystem.

“The results provided in this report, while an incomplete picture of the area’s biodiversity , highlight the conservation value of the Peam Krasop/Koh Kapik mangrove forests, and can serve to underpin stronger management of the area, as well as inform initiatives such as eco-tourism and further research,” the report said.
