Leeds open-top sightseeing bus to launch

An open top tourist bus will become a familiar sight on the streets of Leeds this summer when a new service launches in the city centre.

Similar to the tourist buses in London and other major citites, it's hoped the Leeds City Sightseeing Bus will offer a major boost to tourism in the city.

The distinctive open-top bus will offer a tourist-friendly 'hop on hop off' service across a five-mile route of Leeds city centre. Taking in such sights as Millennium Square, the Corn Exchange and the Victoria Quarter, the bus will run six times each day from 22 May until 26 September.

Welcome to Yorkshire , which is behind the initiative, is also launching a Leeds City Cruise from Clarence Dock to Brewery Wharf and Granary Wharf every weekend and Bank Holiday, and every day during August.

Lucy Allen, from Welcome to Yorkshire, said the service should appeal to both visitors and local residents alike.

"We want to make sure more visitors come to Leeds and see as many of the city's attractions as possible and find ut more about the city's history - similarly, it may uncover some hidden jewels that people who live in Leeds may not be aware of. "We certainly think it will appeal to Leeds residents who'll discover more about the city's heritage with these tours."

Both the City Sightseeing Bus and the Leeds City Cruise will carry the branding of Welcome to Yorkshire and potential passengers and visitors to the city can find out more about both services by picking up leaflets from various venues around the city including Leeds Visitor Centre or by visiting www.yorkshire.com , the official website for Yorkshire.

What do you think? Will this be a good thing for Leeds? WIll you be using it? Have your say in the comments section below.

8. LEEDS UNITED PLAYERS GETTING OFF OF OPEN-TOP BUS AFTER CELEBRATIONS WITH FANS SINGING AND CHEERING

STORY: Around 10,000 Leeds United fans defyied calls to respect COVID-19 distancing guidelines when they turned out to celebrate their side winning England's second-tier Championship and promotion back into the Premier League after a 16-year absence.

The fans descended on their Elland Road stadium and video showed Leeds players in an open-top double-decker bus, surrounded by a swarming mass of chanting fans enveloped in smoke from flares and fireworks.

Leeds defended the bus stunt, saying it was a contingency plan in case, as expected, fans defied calls to stay away.

Already-promoted Leeds had earlier beaten Charlton Athletic 4-0 to send the Londoners down to the third tier -- just one of the issues resolved on a night in which 45 goals were scored in 12 fixtures, all played behind closed doors.

- Coastliner buses

open top bus tour leeds

Great things to see from Coastliner buses Yorkshire

From steam railways to rollercoasters, food festivals to forests, there really is something for everyone on the epic Coastliner bus journeys from Leeds and York to the seaside. The buses pass through York’s ancient walls and arrive eventually at the colourful beach huts of Whitby or Scarborough. In between, are pretty market towns, the rolling Yorkshire Wolds or dramatic moorland landscapes. The North York Moors National Park, which the bus crosses, has hundreds of square miles of heather and 26 miles of coast - no wonder the Coastliner 840 was recently voted Britain’s most scenic bus ride. Sit upstairs if you can for the best views.

  • County: Yorkshire
  • Great for: beaches | churches | gardens | good cafés | historic houses | scenic bus | seaside | steam railway | wildlife |
  • Refreshments: pubs, cafes and more

Founded by the Romans nearly two thousand years ago, York evolved through centuries of Viking invasion and medieval trade to become an empire of steam and chocolate. Today it’s a thriving city and a magnet for sightseers, race-goers and party-lovers. York’s narrow cobbled streets can get so crowded that jumping on a bus into the countryside is particularly inviting. The 840 and 843 Coastliner buses leave for the wild moors, rolling wolds and seaside from outside York railway station. With a £17.50 daytripper plus ticket, you can hop on and off wherever you like and use other Transdev buses too, like the CastleLine bus to Castle Howard (see 2 below). The group ticket for £30 (up to 5 people) is especially good value.

  • Before you leave you might want to check out the National Rail Museum , behind the station. The world’s largest rail museum, spanning three centuries of train-related history, it features gems like the Flying Scotsman, Queen Victoria’s carriage, Eurostar, Japanese bullet trains and the record-breaking Mallard. And it’s free!
  • For an entertaining glimpse into the dark corners of York’s history, you could also visit the York Dungeon where you can come face to face with the city’s former inhabitants like Vikings, plague doctors and Guy Fawkes. The dungeon’s just 20 minutes’ walk from the station, through some of the oldest and most picturesque parts of town (or you can hop off the Cosatliner bus at Micklegate and stroll over the bridge – see map). Best of all, you get 40% off entry with your Coastliner ticket (ask the driver for a voucher).

2. Malton and Castle Howard

Half an hour later, the bus stops at the market town of Malton in the wooded Howardian hills. This bunting-strung, flower-hung, traditional market town has become a foodie destination: butchers and sweet shops are sandwiched between creamy Georgian mansions housing independent cafés. With a regular market and a food lovers festival in May, it’s Yorkshire’s self-proclaimed “food capital”. You can even join a three-hour lunch tour around town (come hungry!) or explore Malton’s new gin distillery on a boozy “gin o’clock” tour.

  • Fifteen minutes from Malton on the separate Castleline bus , which squeezes through the pyramid-topped gatehouse on its way down the grand avenue, is stately Castle Howard . The temple-dotted, rolling grounds of Castle Howard are always beautiful with flowers bordering the sloping lawns and winding trails through dappled glades of rhododendrons. Visitors get 20% off entry with a bus ticket (you can also get the bus direct from York ).
  • And the Yorkshire Aboretum , not far from the gates of Castle Howard, has 120 wooded acres to explore.

3. Scampston Gardens

Elegant geometric patterns of ponds and hedges, wave-form beds of softly waving grasses, fragrant herbs and flowering cherries: the walled garden at Scampston is an unexpected delight. Hidden below the Yorkshire Wolds and surrounded by a larger eighteenth century park, the garden, designed by Piet Oudolf, is open from Easter to October each year.

  • Beyond Malton, the two Coastliner routes routes diverge, with the hourly 843 towards Scarborough passing the end of the lane to Scampston. Visitors who arrive by bus, train or bike  get 30% off entry.
  • Don’t miss the cafe with a wonderful selection of freshly cooked food, often using veg or herbs from the garden.

4. Scarborough

Arrive in the seaside town of Scarborough to stroll through Victorian gardens or ride the cliffside tramway down to the sea, explore the craggy historic castle or dig your own castle on the miles of golden sand. Buckets and spades at the ready!

  • A ruined 12th-century castle on a headland surrounded by sea, these walls were besieged by roundheads in the Civil War. A century later  Scarborough Castle became a prison for Jacobite rebels and in 1914 it was shelled by German warships – all part of an eventful history! Visitors to who arrive on the Coastliner bus can claim 10% off entry (ask the driver for a voucher).
  • You can also get a discounted ticket for the open-top buses: the Scarborough Beachcomber , which runs every half an hour or more between the town’s North and South bays and costs £3.50 as an add-on to the Coastliner.
  • Thanks to Scott Poole for the bus banner image below.

5. Eden Camp

Meanwhile, the 840 Coastliner (Britain’s most scenic route!) leaves Malton every couple of hours, heading over the moors towards Whitby. Just outside town, it stops by Eden Camp , which recreates wartime sights and sounds (and even smells) in a village of genuine Nissan huts, where Italian and German prisoners of war lived in the 1940s.

  • For history lovers, these atmospheric collections are unmissable: from grimmer memories of the Nazi threat and the terrors of the Blitz to the jollier sounds of the music hall or digging for victory in a wartime garden, there is lots to see at Eden Camp.
  • £1 off entry for visitors arriving by bus (ask the driver for a Transdev Treats voucher) and the Coastliner stops just outside!

6. Flamingo Land

A very different kind of entertainment is on hand down the road in Kirby Misperton, where the bus makes a special detour. Flamingo Land , Yorkshire’s Theme Park, has a zoo in the huge grounds as well as scary rides and play areas. You can see the rollercoaster rising out of the trees as the bus approaches and the emus and alpacas in the field next to the bus stop.

  • There are experiences here to impress all ages: sea lion encounters and tractor rides, the sheer terror of the Cliffhanger or the splashy fun of the Lost River Ride.
  • Coastliner passengers get 15% off entry with a voucher from the driver and Flamingo Land is open daily from 10am to 5pm.

7. North York Moors Railway

Soon afterwards, the bus stops in Pickering, where you can visit ruined Pickering Castle , just ten minutes’ stroll up Castlegate from where the bus stops. Do pop in, on the way, to the Peter and Paul church, with its fabulous medieval wall paintings.

  • Pickering is also one end of the North York Moors steam railway , which the bus route crosses again further on at Goathland station (see 9 below) and now runs all the way to Whitby (see 10). With thanks to Charlotte Graham and John Hunt for the photos.
  • Puffing its way across miles of dramatic moorland, the NYMR has year-round special events and is understandably popular with film and TV companies. Get 20% off with a voucher from the driver.
  • Pickering’s retro vibe continues in the nearby Beck Isle local history museum with its reconstructed Victorian shops.

8. Dalby Forest

Five minutes later, the bus reaches stream-side Thornton-le-Dale, voted Yorkshire’s prettiest village back in the 1920s, when the “le” was added to the name to attract tourists. It still looks absolutely charming with its thatched cottages, vintage car museum and chocolate shop.

  • A lovely (if muddy) five-mile walk leads towards nearby Dalby Forest ; along the way, the colours are spectacular in autumn and, in spring, there are banks of April bluebells and wood anemones by the becks that run through the woods, with occasional sprays of blossom overhead.
  • From Dalby Forest visitor centre, a country walk with great views back over the forest leads up through more woods to the Fox and Rabbit inn on the main road, where you can pick up bus 840 again.

9. The Hole of Horcum and Goathland

The 840 bus drives on through its wildest section near the spectacular Hole of Horcum, where another, very different five-mile walk around the edge of the hole takes in craggy ravines and Bronze Age barrows.

  • The Hole of Horcum is a huge water-eroded hollow in the moors, where a giant seems to have scooped a 400-foot-deep cauldron, more than half a mile wide, out of the landscape. One of many local legends says this is exactly what happened: Wade the sea-giant was arguing with his wife, the story says, and grabbed a mighty fistful of earth to throw at her.
  • Fans of ITV’s Hearbeat will recognise the little village of Goathland, where the bus detours through grazing roadside sheep, after winding through the moors. Aidensfield Garage, with its blue wooden doors, looks very similar to its onscreen version. The familiar shops opposite sell all sort of Yorkshire goodies, from locally-brewed ale to ice cream.
  • Goathland station also became Hogsmeade for the film of Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone  (2001); Harry Potter, in JK Rowling’s books, arrives at an old-fashioned station on the steam-drawn Hogwarts Express. You can get on the North York Moors railway here too; it will be puffing through again from late March on its journey between Pickering and Whitby.

At the end of its epic route, the 840 bus arrives in the colourful seaside town of Whitby. The dramatic view of the jagged clifftop abbey inspired Bram Stoker’s Dracula . The town’s creepy connections and abundance of the black gemstone jet have made it a magnet for goths: shops and streets are full of eyeliner, frilly cuffs and velvet. Late April sees the first of two annual Whitby Goth Weekends .

  • As nostalgic wafts of frying filter through the seaside beach huts, work up an appetite for the town’s famous fish and chips with a climb to the headland or a breezy boat trip round the harbour.
  • An old swing bridge over the River Esk links the two sides of town. Cross over and head up the 199 steps to the church and abbey at the top. Don’t rush past 11 th -centry St Mary’s church in your rush to reach the abbey without at least a glance inside at the 18 th -century box pews and galleries. Outside, look out for the tall sandstone Celtic cross in the corner of the churchyard, put there in 1898 in honour of the local Anglo-Saxon poet, Caedmon.
  • Whitby Abbey next door was the venue for a crucial synod in 664AD to set the date for Easter celebrations. The abbey’s elegant new £1.6 million visitor centre opened last April and explores various aspects of its history. Don’t miss the pond behind the abbey – perfect for atmospheric photos!
  • The abbey offers Coastliner passengers 10% off with a voucher and there’s 20% off at Whitby museum .
  • Taking the bus back to York across the moors at sunset has a particular romance.  The views are still breath-taking and the miles of heather turn golden in the evening light.
