Bangalore to Gokarna Road Trip Blog | A Beautifull Journey & Experience

Bangalore Gokarna Road Trip

Bangalore to Gokarna Road Trip -“I climb behind the steering wheel, I drive off immediately without once looking back; it’s a long journey, but it leads to freedom.” –Corinne Hofmann

Do you believe in the above quotes? Do you think you need a much-needed break from your monotonous life? I would then recommend you reading out my story on a road trip covering almost 1200 Km.

Before I begin narrating my road trip story, let me tell you that I have a full-time job with personal life and I get only weekends to travel and explore. One thing I have learned is, if you plan well and put in some effort, you can enjoy the best part of life as you aspire.

WHY LONG ROAD TRIP?

A long weekend was approaching, and it had been a while since I took a break from my mundane city life and spent some quality time with nature.

Hence, it’s time to connect back to my real self, press that accelerator in full throttle and drive far-far away from the bustling city.

But what ideal location would fulfill my yearning for a calm, serene and adventurous experience, I did some research and decided upon this route Bangalore to Chikmagalur to Jog Falls to Gokarna & back to the city

BANGALORE to GOKARNA DAY WISE ITINERARY

Bangalore Gokarna road trip

The day-wise itinerary, places we stayed at and activities we indulge in are as below:

  • Day 1 – Drive from Bangalore to Chikamagalur
  • Stay at Zostel.
  • Sunset at Hirekolale Lake
  • Day 2 – Visit Bababudangiri
  • Drive from Chikamagalur to Jog Falls
  • Stay at Mayura Hotel
  • an evening at Jog Falls
  • Day 3- Morning at Jog Fall
  • Drive from Jog Falls to Gokarna
  • Stay at Namaste Sanjeevni – Gokarna
  • Evening at Kudle Beach
  • Day 4- Gokarna Beach Hike

5. Day 5- Gokarna Zostel

  • Drive back to Bangalore

DAY1: BANGALORE TO  CHIKMAGALUR

Driving early is the easiest way to avoid traffic hence, we started the drive from Bangalore at 8 am. The drive to Chikmagalur via Bangalore-Hassan highway was very comfortable; also, it’s a toll road most of the way. With breakfast break on the highway, we reached Chikmagalur by 2 PM.

ZOSTEL CHIKMAGALUR

zostel Chikmagaluru

After hearing many positive stories and reviews about zostel, I really wanted to experience a community stay. Zostel is 7km from the Chikmagalur city bus stand and has options for a private room and a bed in a dormitory.

There is a cafe inside the campus that serves limited options; tea, coffee, omelet & Maggi for breakfast and veg/non-veg thali for lunch and dinner. Situated amidst the coffee and black pepper plantation, the place is very peaceful.

REVIEWS & CONCLUSION

zostel Chikmagalur

The interiors are nicely done to give the place a traditional south Indian look, which gives it a very homely vibe. We stayed in a private room, which was spacious and clean, but the dormitories looked a little congested.

To conclude, the place has a lot of potentials and it felt like so much more can be done to add soul to this zostel. It’s a good place if you are looking for a budget stay away from the crowd and noise of the city.

SUNSET AT HIREKOLALE LAKE

Hirekolale Lake Chikmagalur

After resting for some time, we headed to Hirekolale lake for sunset. The lake is around 20km from the city (paved tar road all the way) and took us 30 minutes to reach there. Surrounded by hills and coffee estate, it’s a pristine and peaceful place to spend your evening.

There are no activities on the lake, and that’s what keeps the water and surrounding so clean. If you have some time in hand, do stay post-sunset to have the lake all by yourself, enjoy the cool breeze and watch the mesmerizing sky sparkling with stars.

DAY 2: VISIT TO BABABUDANGIRI

Bababudangiri Chikmagalur

Bababudangiri is located at 33km from the city and will take around 1-1.5 hrs to reach there despite a good cement road. The drive is beautiful, it’s an uphill drive with some steep hairpin bends; so be a little careful while driving.

I would highly recommend visiting here early morning to avoid the traffic, as the place gets crowded. If you need some peaceful time away from the crowd, the trick is to take the road less traveled.

HOW TO GET THE BEST VIEW

Bababudangiri Chikmagalur

Once you reach the Dargah, there will be two ways, one on the right going up where most cars will be going, and the other one on left alongside the dargah boundary wall.

Take the road towards left of the dargah and drive till the road ends, there will be a small place on the edge to park your car/bike and post that walk on an unpaved path that goes up.

There you will find a small pond and a temple, walk past them towards the left and you will be amazed by the view. This is the most scenic place in Chikmagalur; carry some snacks and water. If you are like me, you will live to spend your day gazing at the lush green hills.

DAY 2: DRIVE FROM CHIKMAGALUR TO JOG FALLS

bababudangiri panorama

The distance from Chikmagalur to jog falls is around 205 km. We left Bababudangiri (Chikmagalur) by noon and with a lunch break on the way, reached Jog Falls by 5 PM. The most exciting part of the drive was the first 60 km on SH57 through western ghats.

STAY AT MAYURA HOTEL – JOG FALLS

Mayura_Hotel_View From Room

View from the Room

We stayed at Mayura Hotel which is a KSTDC hotel located inside the jog falls entry gate. If you are visiting jog falls, I would highly recommend staying here as this is the only hotel inside the gate and you can spend all your time enjoying the beauty of the falls.

The best part is all rooms have a waterfall view. It’s difficult to get a booking here as there are only 8-10 rooms, so book in advance. The room tariff is fixed; the AC room would cost INR 4247 on weekend and INR 3539 on weekdays and non-ac rooms would cost INR 3539 on weekend and INR 2974 on weekdays.

You can book on the KSTDC website or booking.com. The rooms are very spacious, sparkling clean and have a huge window facing the falls. There is a cafeteria inside the fall entry gate for tourists that serve pretty good food.

You can only order room service for dinner and evening tea; for breakfast, you will have to go to a cafe. Overall a great experience and I would highly recommend if you plan to spend the night at jog falls.

AN EVENING AT JOG FALLS

jog falls sunset

We reached a perfect time for sunset, there is a sunset viewpoint at small walking distance from falls. The clouds were floating in the sky, to end the day with the most beautiful and serene picturesque view ever.

Post dinner we went for a walk and the sky was brightened up by millions of stars; this gave our exciting day a calm ending.

DAY 3 – MORNING AT JOG FALLS

Jog Falls

We woke up at 6 am to see the sunrise at falls. The morning view of the fall is magnificent and peaceful. It’s the best time to click photographs as there are hardly any visitors at the early hours.

I did some morning yoga overlooking the falls, breathing in the cool fresh air; it was so refreshing. After 2 hours at falls, we headed to the cafeteria for morning tea.

DAY 3 – DRIVE FROM JOG FALLS TO GOKARNA

Gokarna is 110 km from jog falls and non-stop drive will take around 2.5-3hrs. Post breakfast, we checked out at 11 am and started drive to next & destination Gokarna .

Although it was a 2.5-3 hours’ drive, we took some detours and stopped on the way to explore the forest and surprise hike to the waterfall and reached Gokarna by 5 PM (our target was to see the sunset on the beach, and we made it).

The whole point of a road trip is to explore the unexplored & document our experience.

STAY AT NAMASTE SANJEEVNI – GOKARNA

namaste_sanjeevni_gokarna

We stayed for 2 nights at Namaste Sanjeevni. It is located at a walking distance from Kudle beach and there are no street lights so you will have to use torch while returning from the beach at night (it’s very safe though).

The resort has different categories of the room that serves everyone from the budget traveler to high spenders.

It’s a lush green resort which gives you the feeling of staying amidst nature. The added advantage is a swimming pool, which is well maintained and clean. There is no room service and no telephone provided in the room, so you will have to walk till reception if you need anything. This didn’t bother us much as we prefer eating at a restaurant where we can interact with other guests and staff.

SUSTAINABILITY CONCERN?

The one thing that bothered me most was that the only option of drinking water was bottled water, there was no water filter from where guests can refill. I feel this was very environmentally unfriendly.

Overall a great experience, perfect location, great food, and friendly staff.

EVENING AT KUDLE BEACH

Kudle Beach Sunset

Sunset from the cliff at Elephant beach resort

Kudle beach lies between the Om beach and Gokarna main beach. It’s a very calm and clean beach. We walked along the coast enjoying the breeze and the serene sunset.

The other less crowded option to enjoy the sunset and get a panoramic view of ocean is by walking up to the cliff through the White Elephant resort.

There are many restaurants along the shore for evening snacks and dinner. We retired at the shack for the evening where we enjoyed dinner listening to the sound of waves.

DAY 4 – GOKARNA BEACH HIKE

Gokarna Beach Hike

Gokarna beach hike covers 5 beaches in the order Kudle beach, Om beach, Half moon beach, Paradise beach, and Belekan beach. Kudle, Om and Belekan beach are accessible by the road whereas one can reach half-moon and paradise beach only by foot or boat. The one-way hike covering all beaches will take around 4-5 hours.

GOKARNA BEACH HIKE DETAIL

We drove to Om beach and decided to hike till paradise beach from there. Trek was straightforward, you start walking from Namaste cafe till the end of om beach, from there you will see a path climbing uphill. After 10 mins of climbing, you will see a breathtaking view of om beach, you can see the Om shape of the beach from up there.

It will take you 30 minutes to reach Half-moon beach. Trek from half-moon to paradise is a bit tricky, there will be a water stream that you must cross to find the actual path.

HOW NOT TO GET LOST?

If you feel like you are walking away from the coast then you are on the wrong path, just walk through the hills by the sea. If you don’t get lost like us, from half-moon beach you will reach paradise beach in 30 mins.

Water in paradise beach is calm, clean and perfect for swimming. If you plan to spend a couple of hours at the beach carry beach towels, snacks, and water.  We spent around 3 hours there, as the sun was scorching, we decided to take the boat back to om beach.

Boats will be leaving almost every hour from paradise beach and will cost around INR 300 per person till Om beach. On our boat ride back, we saw a dolphin which made money spent on a boat all worth it.

DAY 5 – GOKARNA ZOSTEL

zostel gokarna

On day 5 th , we planned to head back to Bangalore, but before heading back I wanted to check the Zostel of Gokarna, so we decided to have breakfast at Mantra cafe (which is part of zostel).

The Café is at less than a km from Kudle beach, located on a cliff overlooking the main Gokarna beach. The view from here was spectacular and the place has a very friendly vibe, seemed perfect for solo and group travellers.

I was so tempted to extend my travel and stay at zostel for a day, but unfortunately, the place was fully booked. One can spend a whole day sitting in the common area, lying on a hammock, enjoying the view.

BANGALORE FROM GOKARNA

zostel gokarna view

Finally, all my attempts to stay back failed and it was time to head back to real life. We started driving back at 11 am and reached back to Bangalore by 11 PM.

Although the return journey was long, the roads were smooth and wide.  The trip was very refreshing, and I was returning with loads of wonderful memories and stories.

SUMMARY & CONCLUSION

paradise beach

To summarize, road trips give you the freedom to move and explore at your own pace. The purpose of this trip was to rejuvenate, decouple from the day to day hustle of life and take a break.

I must say that I overachieved; 5 days, 1200 km, with INR 28K (for 2 ppl) less in my pocket and with priceless memories in my heart; I returned to my routine life fully energetic and ready to take on new challenges.

Gokarna Beach in Karnataka: The Complete Guide

What to Know Before You Go

places to visit on the way to gokarna from bangalore

Gokarna is a small and remote holy town with four of India's most secluded beaches nestled nearby. It draws both pious pilgrims and hedonistic holidaymakers with equal enthusiasm. Travel to Gokarna to get a feel for what Goa was like in its heyday, although time is limited as developers are already seeing the potential of this area and commercialization is setting in. The secret is already out among tourists -- both foreign and domestic -- too. This Gokarna guide will help you plan your trip.

According to Hindu mythology, Gokarna's existence can be traced all the way back to the ancient epic The Ramayana, which tells the story of Lord Ram's life and rescue of his wife Sita from demon king Ravan. It's said that Lord Ganesh fooled Ravan into relinquishing the Atma Linga (the Soul of Lord Shiva that bestows immortality and invincibility) in Gokarna, while was he taking it to his kingdom in Sri Lanka. The Atma Linga is believed to be installed in the town's Mahabaleshwar temple. There's also a temple dedicated to Lord Ganesh.

Gokarna is located on the coast of Karnataka, an hour south of the Goa border. It's about 450 kilometers (280 miles) from Bangalore, the state capital.

How to Get There

The nearest airport is Dabolim, in Goa. From there it's a four hour drive south to Gorkana. Alternatively, trains on the Konkan railway stop at Gokarna Road station, 15 minutes from town. There are railway stations at Kumta and Ankola, both about 25 kilometers (16 miles) from Gokarna, as well. Gokarna is also connected by bus from major cities such as Madgaon in Goa, and Mangalore and Bangalore in Karnataka.

Gokarna experiences the southwest monsoon from June to August, following which the weather becomes dry and sunny. The best time to visit Gokarna is from October until March, when the weather is warm and pleasant with temperatures averaging 32 degrees Celsius (90 degrees Fahrenheit). April and May are hot summer months, and the temperature easily reaches 38 degrees Celsius (100 degrees Fahrenheit) then. It becomes very humid too.

If you're interested in seeing a festival, aim to be there for Mahashivratri (the "Great Night of Lord Shiva") in February or early March. It's celebrated for nine days at Mahabaleshwar temple and concludes with a chariot procession carrying an idol of Lord Shiva through the streets. People throw bananas at the chariot for good luck.

Mahabaleshwar temple also holds rituals for Tripurakhya Deepotsava on Kartik Purnima (the auspicious full moon in November) and is beautifully illuminated with oil lamps.

What to Do There

Gokarna's main attraction is its beaches, where people come to chill and soak up the sun for months at a time. Travelers usually bypass the town's main beach (which is popular with pilgrims) and head a short distance south to Kudle and Om beaches.

Om is the most happening beach, as it can be conveniently reached by car or auto rickshaw. However, this means it draws plenty of domestic tourists and day trippers, especially on weekends. Unfortunately, the men don't always behave themselves. Those who want to escape the crowds prefer Kudle beach. Its secluded position down a hill between two cliffs means that it's less accessible.

Kudle has an international vibe during peak season. A hippie flea market often takes place in the evenings on the beach, followed by drumming and live music around a bonfire. That's about the extent of Gokarna's nightlife, as strict policing keeps it in check (two foreigners were arrested for allegedly organizing a rave party in February 2019). During the day, people do yoga and play games such as cricket, or hang out in a shack with a cold beer. Alcohol is officially banned due to the town's religious significance but you won't have a problem getting a cold beer on the beach.

There are two more smaller beaches -- Half Moon and Paradise -- further south of Om beach. Each requires a scenic 30 minute hike, or a short boat ride, to reach. Paradise Beach isn't much more than a tiny protected cove. It doesn't have amenities and the beach shacks are frequently torn down by the forest department, so people bring tents and camp.

It's possible to hike all the way along the cliff from Kudle beach to Paradise beach. Do wear proper footwear though because the terrain is rocky and steep in parts. Care should be taken when walking between the beaches at night in the dark, and it's best not to go alone.

Om beach has water sports. You can also go surfing and take lessons at Gokarna's main beach. Or, if you fancy, ride a camel along the sand. Read more about the top places to surf and get lessons in India. Strong currents make swimming dangerous in some areas, so do be careful.

It's worthwhile venturing into characterful Gokarna town. It's easy to explore this sleepy town on foot and fun to spot the colorful murals decorating the buildings that line its streets. Wandering around the lake and past innumerable small temples is also enjoyable. Do note that non-Hindus aren't allowed to enter the inner sanctum of Mahabaleshwar temple (the town's main temple), although they can go inside the temple complex. The chariots used in the Mahashivratri festival procession are parked nearby on the street next to the Ganesh temple. If you want to shop, you'll find the usual assortment of tourist stuff being sold in town, ranging from incense to hippie clothes.

Where to Eat and Drink

Namaste Cafe on Om beach is Gokarna's most iconic shack and it stays open during the monsoon season. However, people complain that standards have dropped in recent years. Expect a long wait to get a table and slow service during peak season.

On Kudle beach, the White Elephant and Little Paradise Inn are recommended.

Where to Stay

Gokarna town has plenty of hotels but they are characterless places. Instead, opt for a homestay such as Hari Priya Residency.

Vedic Village is an outstanding homestay in a newly constructed house with sea views, situated five minutes walk from town. Nimmu House is a popular budget option, with a wide variety of rooms in two wings, close to the town's beach.

Alternatively, find yourself a hut on the beach. Decent ones are no longer super cheap, as many places have upgraded to concrete structures with attached bathrooms. Prices skyrocket from December to February, when demand is high, Yet, it's much less costly than Goa! Om and Kudle beaches both have some permanent accommodations. If you want to book in advance, try pocket-friendly Paradise Holiday Cottages or Kudle Ocean Front Resort on Kudle Beach. Namaste Sanjeevini sprawls just above Kudle beach.

Nirvana Guest House is the best place to stay on Om beach. Namaste Cafe and nearby Shantidham Cafe also offer cottages that are popular. Beach accommodation can be difficult to come by in the peak months of December and January though. Many people are just happy with a hammock! If that idea doesn't appeal to you, make sure you turn up before noon to grab a room as people are checking out.

There are a few luxury resorts on the hillside, such as  Om Beach Resort , SwaSwara , Kudle Beach View Resort & Spa , and Kahani Paradise villa for those who prefer their comforts. Om Beach Resort has a traditional Ayurvedic center, while SwaSwara focuses on yoga and meditation.

For something different, check out Namaste Yoga Farm in the hills above Kudle beach. You can stay in a tree house there!

Alternatively, backpackers will be pleased to know that a few hostels have opened up at Gokarna. Zostel hostel was the first one there, in early 2016. It sits on a hilltop halfway between Gokarna town and Kudle beach, and the beach view is rather spectacular. It's an arty place with dorms, private wooden cottages, a common room, and a yummy restaurant. HosteLaVie occupies an enticing spot behind Kudle beach, while Trippr hostel is bang on a private beach.

What to Do Nearby

If you're up for an adventure and are feeling energetic, it's possible to hike south from Gokarna to Kumta in two days. This is known as the Golden Trail and it passes through many virgin beaches.

History lovers will be interested in visiting 16th century Mirjan Fort, about 30 minutes south of Gokarna alongside the Aghanashini River. "Pepper Queen" Chennabharadevi is thought to have constructed it and controlled the spice trade through it. There are wells, secret doors, interlinked tunnels, and a watch tower.

About 45 minutes inland from Mirjan, the towering black crystalline limestone rock formations in the Western Ghat mountains near Yana village are an offbeat attraction. A short forest trek is required to reach them.

Budget Trip To Gokarna within ₹4500 – Gokarna Travel Guide

How everyone wishes to travel but just can’t because of no leaves or limited leaves. I always thought this was a myth that there are no leaves in the corporate world. Fast forward to when I joined the same world all those myths became true. But planning a trip once a month I knew wasn’t going to be that tough. I started shortlisting the places nearby Bangalore which can be easily done in 2 days(come on you can manage 2 days in a month at least) and are also budget-friendly.

Gokarna Travel guide

The first thing that comes to my mind when someone says a vacation is a beach. When anyone hears of a beach there are only two choices most of the time, Goa or Pondicherry. But very few people know about a town called Gokarna which is located on the western coast of India. With its pristine, less crowded beaches and Gokarna beach trek it is a great vacation spot. This Gokarna travel guide will tell you everything you need to know about the place, how to save that extra buck and places to visit in Gokarna in 2 days.

What is the best time to visit Gokarna?

Gokarna beach trek

The best time to visit Gokarna can be in the months after the Monsoon which is from September October to March . But since people have been knowing about Gokarna in the last few years you might be able to see a good crowd. The months from April to June are quite hot but attract a lot of lesser tourists and could be one of the ways to save some money during the offseason.

Gokarna Travel Guide – Day by day itinerary

Om beach

Day 0: How to Reach Gokarna

Gokarna travel guide

Starting my trip from Bangalore. Gokarna is easily accessible by bus and train. The latter is not an option because it takes a lot of time. But if you plan to go to Gokarna for 3 days train is the most suitable option to travel at least from one side. The bus price usually ranges from Rs 800 to 1200(sleeper) if booked a few days in advance. There are KSRTC buses which charge around Rs 500 but are seater. The buses are usually late in the night and you reach Gokarna early morning.

Day 1: Things to do in Gokarna on day 1

gokarna checkpost

Upon reaching Gokarna by 8 am there are two places the bus usually drops you. If you get down at the Gokarna check-post don’t ever take the left towards Kudle Beach as that is a longer route. Then you walk straight, the town is just 1km. If you take an auto to the town or the beach it will cost you a minimum of Rs200. But if you get down at the main bus stand which is in the centre of the town going to the beaches becomes easier. Don’t take the auto to the beaches as it will cost you Rs 100 for just a km. Instead, it is great to have a walk in the morning. If you don’t want to do the Gokarna beach trek then you can rent a scootie starting from Rs 300(more details can be found online)

Where to stay in Gokarna

graffiti in gokarna

As soon as you trek down and enter Kudle beach the view will take your breath away.  Staying in Gokarna is never an issue until it is a festival season. You could try a few of the beach shacks on Kudle or a few hostels on the way to the Kudle beach . They range from Rs 400 – Rs 600 per person. I stayed at Sea Rock cafe which cost me Rs700 for a night which can accommodate 2 people easily. The room is a cement block covered with wood on the top and you have a private washroom to yourself. The place looked decent and safe for women. The Gokarna beach trek connects all the main beaches of Gokarna and the town. Once we were settled in the shack we had breakfast there which cost us Rs 100.

The other stay option I’ll recommend to you is Zostel which is on the way to Kudle Beach. Zostel is safe for women travellers as well.

After 12 we left to explore the town and the temples. I wouldn’t bore you much with the history of the town, just that the Mahabaleshwar temple was built in the 4th Century. The Gokarna town is very small and can be covered on feet. Then we went towards the Gokarna beach, one of the most crowded beaches apart from OM beach. After relaxing on the Gokarna beach we had lunch at Prema Cold Drinks (permanently closed) . Which cost us around Rs 100 – Rs 150

Once we were done with the lunch we returned to the shack and relaxed.

Planning to stay for longer in Gokarna? Check this comprehensive Gokarna 3-Day itinerary .

Kudle Beach: The best sunset ever

Sunset at kudle beach

In the evening we took a dip in the Kudle beach and just sat there to experience one of the best sunsets ever. According to me, experiencing the sunset is one of the top things to do in Gokarna. In the night while going for dinner we found a lot of crabs on the beach so make sure to not stamp them. We had dinner again at the La Pizzeria cafe (Now known as Ganga Cafe) which cost us around Rs 250 – 300 max.

Gokarna travel guide

Day 2: Gokarna beach trek

Gokarna beach trek

We woke up early to check out the sunrise, though not being a morning person. It resembled just like a red ball. Never knew sunrise was also a great experience but sunsets still win hands down. After having breakfast at the shack which cost us Rs 100 we left for the Gokarna beach trek. The total distance of the trek is approx 6km. The beaches connected to this trek are Gokarna Beach, Kudle Beach, OM Beach, Half-moon Beach and Paradise Beach all at a distance of 1-1.5km. Carry enough water to keep you hydrated. The next stop was the OM beach. The trek starts from the end of Kudle beach where the steps will lead you to the other side of the cliff. The trek was moderately easy if you don’t want to trek you can take an auto/taxi. The next part was the descent towards Om Beach. I did find a lot of trash and garbage on the way.

Om Beach: Why is it named so?

OM beach

The beach is named OM because it forms two crescent shapes which result in the OM shape(Hindu symbol)

On reaching the OM beach we rested a while at the Namaste cafe which is too overrated and also very expensive. We didn’t have anything from the cafe and just relaxed on the beach. The waves were very wild here as compared to the Kudle beach. After going a little deep into Om Beach there is a sudden drop, so be careful who don’t know how to swim. One of the worst things I experienced here was the native people and tourists from India troubling the foreigners for a photo. Request to everyone, let the foreigners alone as they too are on vacation and wouldn’t want to be disturbed. The time is already 11 am. Here you can get ferries to Half-moon Beach, Paradise Beach and Nirvana Beach (Cost: 200 – 400 per person). We didn’t take the ferry and resumed our trek to the Half-moon beach. I also discovered a new point on the way to the half-moon beach( Om Beach viewpoint ) The trek is a bit tough and very dangerous at one point. So don’t look too much on the right as it is 60-70 ft deep.

Gokarna beach trek

Half Moon Beach: the cute beach

Half moon beach

The beach is in the shape of a half-moon and is named so. You will find very few people on this beach. Since the beach is very small, it is actually like a private beach with less or no people. Just behind the half-moon beach are the rice paddy fields. I was seeing rice fields for the first time this close to the beach. Crossing the half-moon beach there is another unnamed beach with a lot of black pebbles and rocks. There are 2 cafes on this beach so we decided to have our lunch in one of the cafes. They served some really good bread omelette or maybe we were too hungry so the total lunch cost us Rs 150.

Paradise Beach: The camper’s heaven

gokarna beach trek

The next stop was the Paradise Beach. The trek from Half Moon Beach presumes from the backside of the cafe we had lunch from. Upon reaching this beach I made up my mind to come here and camp as I saw a few people camping and it was one of the best and most peaceful beaches.

There are two parts to the beaches separated by a huge rock in between. There are only two local sellers here selling fruits. If you are lucky you can even find someone making an omelette for you. Visiting Paradise Beach has to be one of the top things to do in Gokarna. While returning it took us around 2 hours. We reached our shacks by 4:30 – 5 p.m.

Another sunset at the Kudle beach

Gokarna travel guide

After relaxing for some time and then we had our last meal at 6:30 pm at the La Pizzeria cafe. I know it’s too early but since the bus goes through a lot of hairpin bends it was better to have the meal beforehand. The snacks/dinner cost us Rs 300 approx. Before catching the bus we went to the temple and had prasad. The bus was at 8:30 pm and we reached Bangalore by 7 am.

Yes you can rent a car and visit Gokarna, but majority of the beaches are only accessible by foot like the trail from Om beach to paradise beach

India is definitely on my list of countries to visit, but I know so little about it. So, thank you for your blog – something new I’ve learned today 🙂 Half Moon beach looks awesome 🙂 I have a question. In your conclusion you write “Don’t disturb the foreigners as they to are on their vacation and wouldn’t want to be disturbed”. Did you see some foreigners being disturbed? Am very curious to know the background of this story 🙂 Thank you!

Hey darja it’s my pleasure that I was able to introduce you to a new place. The disturbance caused to the foreigners was just they were being forced to take pictures and also stared upon.

I was planning a solo woman trip during the month nov end. Having been looking up and down where to stay and what to expect. And also was planning on scuba diving is it worth doing it in gokarna?

You should first be considering the travel conditions during that time, otherwise, solo travelling in Gokarna is really great. There is no scuba in Gokarna but it is available in Netrani Island.

How to reach Gokarna from Bangalore

Gokarna is a small town located on the southwestern coast of Uttara Kannada district in Karnataka and an hour south of the Goa border by train. It is one of the most important Hindu pilgrimage centers in India.

It’s quite easy to reach Gokarna from any part of the world. Gokarna is about 450 kilometers from Bengaluru, 238 km from Mangalore, about 59 km from Karwar, 866 km from Chennai (Tamil Nadu), and 525 km from Kerala. Gokarna can be reached in various ways, such as by plane, train, car, bus, or bike. It would become an awesome trip for bike riders since the travel includes curvy roads, hills, highways, etc.

How to reach Gokarna from Bangalore

This article will help you know how to reach Gokarna from Bangalore and plan your trip.

By Roadway:

There are several buses that run from Bangalore to Gokarna at affordable prices. It takes about 9–11 hours to reach the place. There are many state government and private bus services available from Bengaluru to Gokarna, as well as from other places in India.

Sugama Travels, Vijayanand Roadlines (VRL), Sea-Bird, Seabird Tourists, Spd Travels, and SRS Travels are a few private buses that provide night journeys as well as a countable day journey from Bengaluru, and the ticket fare ranges from 600 to 1500 bucks depending on the season and availability of the seats.

I would for sure say that our bus journey was not a very enjoyable experience since the overnight journey was horrible due to the bus condition. I suggest you prefer buses once after surfing about the bus ratings on Google/other booking apps.

And, if you are visiting Goa first and then traveling to Gokarna, it’s just a 1–1.30-hour journey by train & a 5–5.45-hour journey by bus to reach Gokarna. Bus services are available from most of the cities in India. One thing you want to do is dive into Google and search for the available services in your region.

The nearest Airports Dabolim Airport is approximately 106.2 km away from Gokarna. Other nearby airports are.

  • Hubli, 123 km away
  • Belgaum, 150 km away
  • Mangalore International Airport is 187.4 km away from Gokarna.

The flight rate ranges from 2.2k to 7k, depending on the days of the week and peak seasons. I suggest you plan your travel dates accordingly. After reaching the airport, you can reach Gokarna either by train, bus, or cab, as per your convenience.

By Railway:

If you are traveling by train, pre-booking the tickets is a better option than booking at the last minute. IRCTC gateway provides the available trains from Bangalore to Gokarna

The very nearest railway station is Gokarna Road, 6 km from the town, and you can reach the Gokarna beach from there by cab or auto, which takes 20 minutes to reach the place. The KSR Bengaluru Karwar Express, Matsyagandha Express, Poorna Express, Marusagar Express, and Mangalore Local are the daily local trains available.

The train ticket fare starts from Rs 250 to Rs 2k, according to the classes you choose.

The other nearest railway station is Ankola, which is about 20–25 km from the town. A few other nearby railway stations are Kumta Railway Station (32.8 km), Honnavar Railway Station (47.8 km), and Karwar Railway Station (74 km).

Once you reach the station, you can take either a bus (private or government) or a cab to reach Gokarna.

Where to go after exploring Gokarna?

Since Goa is only about one hour by train from Gokarna, it is one of the best places to explore. A few other places include Kumta (32 km), Karwar (60 km), Yellapur (75–80 km), Udupi (178 km), Mangalore (230–235 km), Murudeshwar (80 km), & Jog Falls (112 km).

Happy Travelling!!!

What To Eat And Stopovers

On the way to Gokarna, some of the eateries and restaurants serve some delicious south Indian food. The spices and flavours are incredible when one begins the meals and lingers on the taste buds until you return again to try them out. That's the secret to the cuisine served in these small but amazingly cool highway restaurants and eateries.

  • Lakshmi Bhavan Tiffin Room: This is a must visit eatery in Chitradurga. The restaurant serves Indian, Asian styles cuisine. They have a vegetarian and vegan friendly menu too. This may be a relatively small place but is quite popular among the local residents. The dosas served during breakfast are simply delicious. It is known to be one of the best hotels to try out the masala dosa as well.
  • Reddy Military Hotel: Their loyal customers simply rave about this small but well-kept restaurant. Their food is simply superb. In reality, when you reach, the restaurant does not have a military feel to it in any way and gives out more family oriented vibe instead. Their mutton chops, mutton fry, kheema, natti chicken, rice and chapathy are some of their most in-demand and frequently ordered dishes.
  • Swathi Delicacy: This restaurant serves Indian, Asian, and also vegetarian dishes across breakfast, lunch, dinner, brunch. This restaurant is located just off the highway. The food here is delicious. Must try dishes on the list are the south Indian idli vada, poori, pulao.
  • Vilasi Delight: They serve Indian and Asian food and is so popular with travellers that there is always a queue or you need to reserve a table in advance. One of the best vegetarian eateries on the highway in Tumkur, the food prices are affordable, with superb ambience making it the ideal choice for groups and families.
  • Kamat Upachar: This restaurant is popular among travellers. Their menu is Indian heavy but they also offer vegan options along with a special vegetarian menu. They are open for three meals - breakfast, brunch, lunch. Their plantain leaf lunch with jowari roti is a favourite among customers, which comes with delicious side dishes with a variety of South Indian flavours.

Reaching There And Places To Visit

Gokarna is filled with temples, beaches, fun in the sun and water sports. If you fancy a lonely walk on these virgin beaches, then this is definitely the place to be. The temples are some of the best destinations that you can choose within the country to pray, meditate, connect with your inner soul or just simply relax. Here are some of the places that you must visit in Gokarna:

  • Om Beach: This is a trendy beach for its shape which is like the OM famous sign among Hindus. People also visit here because it is a serene and gorgeous place to relax. Walking in the sand and enjoying the tranquil beaches calm people and refresh the energy.
  • Mahabaleshwar Temple, Gokarna: This is in Gokarna, and it is a Hindu temple located in Gokarna, many people travel to this religious pilgrimage centre in Karnataka.
  • Half Moon Beach: This beach earns its name for its shape as well. It is difficult to access the Half Moon Beach via the roads, so to reach the beach, one has to hike or use a motorboat from Om beach. Alternatively, take a walk towards Dolphin Cafe at the southern end of Om beach. Later, you can follow the signboard pointing in the direction of the Half-moon beach.
  • Kudle Beach Road: Visiting this beach is going to make you fall in love with it instantly. The waves here are softer than most Indian beaches where the waves are aggressive. It is ideal for children to play in the sea. The sand is soft and perfect to build some sandcastles. Kudle beach isn't as exposed as Om beach. Therefore, less crowd ensures a cleaner beach. The beach also has a couple of quaint beachside restaurants where you can grab a bite before jumping into the sea.
  • Paradise Beach : This beach is genuinely a paradise being almost entirely cut off from the mainstream. Paradise beach is a treat to one's senses. If in Gokarna, this is not to be missed at any cost. Paradise beach can be accessed by trekkers through the Kudle beach, which is the most used route. You can also hire a bike to ride till Belekan beach through the picturesque Belekan village and catch a glimpse of the local life here. Belekan beach takes one through a short 20 minutes hike to this secluded paradise beach. Stay back and watch the sunset or the sunrise and experience pure joy.
  • Maha Ganapathi Temple: Visit the Mahaganpati temple before the Mahabaleshwar temple as the legend goes that one needs to visit here before they go to the revered Shiv temple. The history of this temple is unique, and people are always intrigued to see the idol which is in a standing position and it is black in colour. One can also see the high bump in the idol’s head.

Gokarna is a perfect monsoon and winter destination. Hence, pack for the beaches and carry sunscreen lotions so that the skin is well protected. The journey to Gokarna is not too far but far enough for anyone to plan a service before driving to the destination.

Other than packing for the beach, carry essential items such as torchlights as some of these beaches do not have any lighting. Above all make sure you carry your vehicle documents including car insurance or two wheeler insurance documents with you.

Diesel / Petrol Pumps

The road to Gokarna is always packed with traffic as it is a destination for people of all ages. Refuelling is not going to be an issue at all.

Overnight Halts If Any

A good night’s rest is good for the body, especially for those who make frequent road trips to nearby places. It refreshes the mind and makes you fit to take on the road the next morning. Some of the hotels that you can book for an overnight stay are:

Mechanics can be found along the highway as this is a frequented route with heavy traffic. But carry your tool kit just in case if there are minor issues with your vehicle, which you may be able to fix yourself. Also, make sure if yo

Medical Facilities

There are government facilities along the highway. However, it would be prudent to carry a sheet containing names and contact details of some of these facilities.

Electricity

There are no electricity problems in Gokarna even though it is a small town. Rarely do they face power cuts here.

When going on a road trip you will like to ensure that the journey is going to be trouble free. To ensure that you need to carry your tool kit with essential items such as screwdrivers, a swiss knife, a crescent wrench, a first aid kit, pliers – two sets, duct tape, scissors, air pressure gauge for tyres (these are small and handy). Doused in stories and anecdotes from the Mahabharata and the Ramayana, it’s a place of religious and mythological importance. There are several wonderful things to do in this rustic town of Gokarna. Where is Gokarna?

Kudle Beach, one of the best places to visit in Gokarna

Gokarna is located in the southern state of Karnataka in the Kumta taluk of Uttara Kannada district. It’s a coastal town along the Arabian Sea almost near Goa’s border. There are several ways in which you could reach Gokarna.

How to Visit Gokarna

Gokarna has a railway station a little away from the town. Unfortunately it does not have very good connectivity with most cities and towns in India.

From Bangalore, there are few Karwar bound trains that stop at Gokarna on the way. Karwar is around 60km from Gokarna. Time taken is approximately 15-16 hours.

There are two trains which ply between Mumbai and Gokarna and the journey takes around 12 hours. The boarding station in Mumbai is Lokamanya Tilak Terminus.

There are plenty of trains running between Goa and Gokarna and the journey takes about an hour and a half. The boarding station is Margao.

From the station, you can hire an auto to your hotel/hostel or city. Although it could be a pain to find one during the offseason, especially during early morning hours. But during the peak season, you’ll almost never have any difficulties finding an auto. You can also find local buses running a little away from the station to the town.

There’s another station in Ankola which is around 20 km away from Gokarna. And this is the preferred choice for most travelers when a direct train is not available. From Ankola you can either travel to Gokarna by a local bus or by hiring an auto or cab.

The nearest airport to Gokarna is Goa’s Dabolim Airport . Another option is to fly to Mangalore Airport . From here you can come down to Gokarna by either a bus or train or by hiring a cab. Gokarna is 145 km from Dabolim Airport and it can take anywhere between 3 to 5 hours to reach depending on the mode of transport. From Mangalore, Gokarna is 250 km away and it takes around 4-5 hours to reach.

Gokarna has good road connectivity to the nearby cities. There are direct buses plying from Mangalore, Goa, and Bangalore at regular intervals. You could also hire a cab from Goa and Mangalore.

Bangalore is usually the most preferred option because it is well connected to Gokarna and buses can be easily booked from the KSRTC website.

Overall, the most convenient and budget-friendly option to travel to Gokarna is by road. If you choose to travel to Gokarna from Mangalore by road, you can also visit other places like Murudeshwar, Padubidri beach and Kasarkod beach (blue flag certified beaches) Apsarakonda, and Maravante on the way.

Getting Around in Gokarna

Although there are frequent local buses operating within the town, they mostly cater to the needs of the locals rather than of the travellers. It’s best to hire a two-wheeler or self-drive to this place as you’ll have the liberty of exploring the place at your own pace. There are quite a few rental shops in the town (E.g. Aparajitha Bike Rent) or you can just enquire at your hotel or hostel. There are also many places where you can rent a bicycle.

Another option would be to hire autos. There are many auto-stands especially near Kudle beach, Om beach and in the town centre. For a budget traveller though it can turn out to be slightly expensive as autos don’t operate by the meter. The rates are mostly fixed and decided by the union and it’s of no use haggling. But the auto drivers are more than willing to give you their number along with a ‘day package’ to travel around. It’s one of the best ways to explore Gokarna.

Best Time to Visit Gokarna

Gokarna is a year-long destination. Although peak monsoon season is considered to be the offseason. During monsoon season, the coast experiences relentless rains and it can be a hassle if you’re not fond of rains. Whereas if you love the monsoons with its cloud-covered landscapes, petrichor ladened air, lush greenery and deserted beaches then it is the perfect time to visit.

On the other hand, the peak summer season, March to May, can get unbearably hot and humid preventing you from exploring the town. So the perfect time would be during the winter months of October to February. Mind you, don’t expect the place to be too cold as it’s definitely going to be humid. Just a tad bit less as compared to other months.

But if you wish to do a staycation as is the case with most people’s post-pandemic travel plan, this can be a perfect place to unwind at a peaceful hotel, homestay, or resort. Better yet, find a place overlooking the sea and while your time away in complete silence and seclusion.

Ideal duration of stay in Gokarna

You can spend anywhere between two days to two weeks in this tranquil town. The ideal number of days to visit all the main places in the town would be 2-3 days. But if you wish to soak in the vibe, relax, unwind and also explore some of the pretty corners of this tranquil town, then I’d suggest adding one or two more days.

  • Kudle Beach View Resort – Great view and food (best for Indian and Chinese cuisine; try their chocolate pudding)
  • Mantra Cafe, Zostel – Great food and view

Top 10 Things to do in Gokarna

It’s not always about ticking off bucket list things when you visit a place, is it? Sometimes it’s worth doing things that are not very mainstream in order to completely get a feel of a place. Here’s a list of things to do in Gokarna to have an immersive and memorable experience in this quaint town.

Cycling in Gokarna Countryside

Most people travel to Gokarna by train or public transport and hence follow a fixed path to reach their hotel and hostel. And immediately set out to check out all the noteworthy spots. While this is completely understandable if you’re short on time, I’d suggest to keep aside a day for leisure and explore the countryside of Gokarna if possible.

Narrow lanes cutting through pastel green rice fields, smooth asphalt roads passing through colorful houses with their sloping red-tiled roofs. Hidden mangrove filled backwaters with peaceful temples quietly sitting on their banks. You’ll come across all this and more when you go off the beaten track. Although any mode of transport will do, it’s best to explore it on a two-wheeler.

Interiors of Gokarna

Flea Market Shopping

Even if you’re someone who loves to shop in malls or popular stores and shops, there’s a different charm in buying a beautiful frock or funky jewellery for dirt cheap prices. Especially in charming sleepy towns tucked away from the rest world.

The town of Gokarna has several flea markets selling traditional colourful outfits, tropical indie-style beach garments, wooden carts covered with bracelets, local crafts, spices, and earrings made out of delicate shells and beads. So go on and splurge! And in turn, you’ll be contributing to the local economy! A win-win situation! 😉

Go for a Boat Ride

Picture this! The gentle hum of the boat’s motor, the constant swish of the waves beneath the boat. And the sun slowly sinking at the horizon. The vast orange blue expanse of the sea on one side and the coconut covered stretch of land on the other slowly blending into the sea. Can you think of a more relaxing experience?

You can take a boat ride from Om Beach to Half-Moon Beach and Paradise Beach. My suggestion would be to reach Half-Moon Beach or Paradise Beach by foot and then take a boat ride back from there to Om Beach.

You might also get to spot some dolphins on the way if you’re lucky!

Go Cafe Hopping

There is no dearth of cafes and eateries in Gokarna. You can find them lining the shores or high above the beach on a cliff overlooking the vast expanse of the sea. Simple, quirky shacks and huts adding to the experience. What better way to spend a peaceful evening than gorging on delicious food and watching the waves crashing on the horizon.

Gokarna Backwaters

Watch Sunrise on the West Coast

Belekan Beach in Gokarna is one of those rare beaches on the west coast where you can watch the sunrise. The complete lack of commercialization of this beach makes it one of the best places to enjoy the early hour bliss. This is one of the best offbeat things to do in Gokarna

Belekan Beach- One of the lesser known beaches of Gokarna

Climb up a Lighthouse

Usually, no visit to a coastal destination is complete without paying a visit to at least one lighthouse. Sadly the one in Gokarna is not very popular and the way to it is also not very straightforward. But if you don’t mind a bit of an adventure. Gokarna Lighthouse is one of the best offbeat places to visit in Gokarna.

Tip: The starting point of the beach trek starts after crossing the stream. Walking straight ahead after crossing the stream takes you towards Paradise beach. Right before this point, there’s a path which forks upwards to the left which leads to the Lighthouse.

Gokarna Lighthouse- Lesser known but beautiful place to visit in Gokarna

Practice Yoga by the Sea.

There’s nothing more peaceful than practising yoga amidst nature. And what better place than by the sea? With your ears constantly filled with the melody of the chirping birds and the gentle crash of the waves, this is one of the best things to do in Gokarna. So just find your spot and zone in.

Watch Sunset on a Cliff

Gokarna and cliffs are synonymous with each other. If you can manage to drift away from the popular spots, you’ll see that there are several untouched nooks still waiting to be discovered. Viewing sunset from a cliff in Gokarna is a breathtaking experience.

Watching the golden orb slowly dip into the horizon high above a cliff while the white frothy waves crash below is an experience like no other. This is one of the best gifts you could give to yourself and one of the beautiful things to do in Gokarna.

Camp by the Beach

If you’ve ever wished to camp by the beachside, Gokarna can be the best place to do it. While there are plenty of modest huts available for stay near the popular beaches of Gokarna, it’s an entirely different experience to camp on a beach.

The best beach to do this would be the Half-Moon beach. Its pristine golden sand with delightful clear water is just too beautiful and will instantly fill you with a sense of joy and calm. There are no facilities available here but the kind locals are forever willing to provide packed food, water and other basic necessities to the campers.

On the way to Half-Moon Beach

Do the Gokarna Beach Trek

This is hands down one of the best things to do in Gokarna. All the beaches in Gokarna are interlinked through short hikes. The joy of hiking along sloping cliffs covered with clusters of palm trees, discovering pretty nooks and crannies along a path through jungles and boulders is unparalleled.

The path is filled with the salt-scented fragrance of the sea, hidden viewpoints peeking out of clamps of bushes with gorgeous sweeping views of the thrashing sea below. It’s probably one of the most gorgeous trekking routes in India. The Gokarna Beach Trek is definitely one of the top things to do in this beach town. You can start the trek in any one of the beaches apart from Half-Moon Beach and Paradise Beach since they are accessible only by foot.

This is the recommended trail: Kudle Beach – Om Beach – Half-Moon Beach – Paradise beach – Belekan beach (or vice versa)

Although the best time to do the Gokarna Beach Trek would be immediately after the monsoons when there’d be an abundance of greenery everywhere, you can do it any time of the year. Be prepared to bear with the sweltering heat though. It’s advisable to go with a local guide or in a group as in few areas the trail is not properly marked and there’s a possibility of getting lost. And at all cost do not venture on the trail alone after sunset.

Hiking between the beaches in Gokarna

Note : If you’re not interested in trekking you can do beach hopping in boats operated by local fishermen. This is mostly operational during the peak season and sometimes when good weather conditions prevail during the off-season.

Several water activities are also available during this time. There’s a ferry line operating between Belekan and Kumta. You can use this ferry to visit a few of the other nearby beaches like Nirvana and Heaven.

Places to Stay in Gokarna

Whether you prefer to stay in the town centre with easy road accessibility or you want to reach out to your gypsy roots and spend a night under the stars, there’s something for everyone in Gokarna.

Here’s a list of some of the best stays

  • Zostel – The goto option for backpackers and budget travellers. And their recently introduced individual cottages make it a great choice even for other tourists. The affordable dorms, great views of the sea, and their in-house cafe serving delicious food have definitely made it a popular choice among everyone.
  • Viraz Valley – Sitting atop a cliff amidst a forest overlooking the sea, this is one of the most affordable and great stays in Gokarna. Easily accessible through a lane which forks off from the main road, it is located at a short distance from Om Beach and Kudle Beach. They have an in-house restaurant and a terrace with great views of the beach.
  • Kudle Beach View Resort – Located amidst a small jungle within walking distance to Kudle beach, this is a great place to unwind if you’re looking for some peace and luxury. Their restaurant, located on the top floor overlooking Kudle Beach is an amazing place to watch the sunset from. The chefs whip up delicious food and this is one of the best places to visit in Gokarna to indulge in some lip-smacking food along with breathtaking views.

This is definitely not a complete list as there are several other stay options in the main town and many other newly emerged resorts and hotels interspersed throughout the town. While you can definitely expect to find a stay throughout the year, do look out for the seasonal crowd which throngs Gokarna during certain religious months. During this time if you happen to reach without prior booking, it might turn out to be slightly inconvenient.

Many cafes and shacks are lined along its shore as well as on the cliff above. From Kudle Beach there is a well-paved path towards Om beach passing under a canopy of trees. However, if you opt to travel during the summers it can turn out to be very hot due to humidity. There are also motorboats ferrying between Kudle Beach and Om Beach. The beach is accessible after a 10-minute hike downhill from the parking area. Definitely one of the most beautiful places to visit in Gokarna and you should include this in the list of things to do in Gokarna

Om Beach- One of the best places to visit in Gokarna

The most popular beach in Gokarna. It owes its name to its two crescent-shaped shores which form the shape of Om. Several shacks and cafes line its shore including the popular Namaste Cafe. There are many water activities like banana boat rides, surfing, and parasailing for you to indulge in as well.

It’s south-facing hence sunset views are not that great from this beach. A long stretch of beige-coloured sand with several places to dine and unwind. Kudle beach and Om beach is pretty close to each other and you can definitely include this in your list of things to do in Gokarna In order to get a perfect view of its shape, you’ll have to walk towards the rightmost corner up a small hill.

During the peak season, there are frequent boats operating to Paradise Beach. Although it’s best to trek to Paradise Beach, those not wishing to trek can opt for this.

Half-Moon Beach

Shaped like a perfect half-moon this beach is tucked in between jungles and boulders and is accessible only by a short hike from Om Beach. At the far end of the beach, there are a couple of shacks here serving limited food but the beach is a pretty one. Especially peaceful if you happen to visit it during the offseason. A perfect place to perch on the pile of rocks by the beach, sip a drink and watch the sun go down.

You can even stay here for a few days by setting up your own tents. Many people have started opting for this and in order to have the beach all to yourself, it’s better to choose a weekday rather than a weekend.

There’s also a trail which starts somewhere along the main road which is mentioned in Google Maps. The trail between Om beach and Half moon beach is the most picturesque one passing through jagged cliffs overlooking the Arabian Sea.

Note : If you plan to go back by boat then be mindful of the boat timings And if you plan to trek back to Om beach ensure you carry a torch with you and do not trek alone as it can be risky to climb the cliff during late night. You can get your tents and spend the night here under the stars. But ensure to take all your belongings and trash back with you!

Sunset on a cliff

Paradise Beach

South facing scenic beach with no shacks or eateries. Peaceful and secluded, it’s perfect for some soul time and relaxation and one of the secret beaches in Gokarna. You’ll have to put in some effort to reach here though. And that’s the reason it’s still pristine and untouched. It’s a rocky beach hence be careful if you wish to swim here.

You can reach Paradise beach in Gokarna by a small hike through life-sized shrubs and thickets from the Belekan Beach. This route is comparatively less popular as compared to the hike from Om Beach and Half-Moon Beach.

Practice yoga by a peaceful corner or simply perch on a pile of rocks and stare at the dipping sun when the sky catches fire.

Belekan Beach

Belekan Beach

Mallikarjuna Temple

Situated along Ashokavana Road, this beautiful temple is a piece of architecture . Snuggly sitting in the middle of an areca nut plantation, this place oozes serenity . With the constant gurgling sound of a stream nearby, the chirping of birds and insects, this is one of the magical places to visit in Gokarna for some quiet and peaceful time.

Shiva Cave Gokarna

Shiva Cave

Sitting amidst a sea of boulders in a picturesque location, Shiva Cave is an interesting place to visit if you’re into exploring offbeat hidden places. If your timing is right, you can listen to some exciting stories from some saints and devotees who often use this cave as a resting place. They’ll regale you with their interesting tales about the history and significance of this cave.

The legend goes by the story that this cave was made by a cow captured by Ravana while escaping from his grasp. It is also believed that there’s a secret tunnel in the cave which leads to Varanasi. Irrespective of whether you believe in Mahabharata or not, these stories certainly have a different charm while you listen to them standing there and try to visualize everything. The surrounding area has a peaceful vibe about it and you can spend some quiet time sitting among the boulders.

Travel Tip: Look for a ‘Shiva Cave’ board opposite Kudle Beach View Resort from where the path starts

Jatayu Tirtha

Jatayu Tirtha

A cliff tucked in between Gokarna beach and Kudle beach this is a heavenly place for watching the sunset along with some breathtaking views of the sea and the rocks below. It’s not very popular yet since it takes some effort to reach here and only a handful of people manage to stumble across it. You can reach this place either from Kudle beachside or from a path near Rama Tirtha temple.

You can also hike down to the rocky shore below where a small stream flows to the sea. This is considered to be the place where Jatayu from Ramayana was slain by Ravana.

A gradual slope leads down to the turquoise water sheathed in soft white foam. I stumbled upon this gem of a place by chance and was blown away by its beauty. White frothy waves crashed on the rocks below, with absolutely no one around. Just the sound of waves, breeze and the smell of sea and sunset.

Rama Tirtha

Apsarakonda

This is a beautiful beach village hiding in plain sight near Honnavar. The beach sees almost no visitors apart from few locals and is one of the cleanest beaches I’ve come across. There’s a lovely garden with a variety of flowers and a viewpoint from where you can get a panaromic view of the sparkling beach below.

There’s also a waterfall here which is a pretty sight during the monsoon but not much of a beauty during the other seasons.

Solo Trip to Gokarna from Bangalore. (1260 Kms Bullet Ride)

Photo of Upendra Chaudhary Instagram: @upen_leo

Before the alarm shouts at 3:00 am, the excitement of a solo trip didn't let me sleep whole night and my anxiety forced me defuse the alarm at 2:57 am with sleepless aspirant eyes. After a refreshing shower, I started at 4 am with lots of hope n excitement driven in my eyes to ride my "Royal Enfield" Classic Chrome 500cc " Laado " - (Pet name) to Gokarna, 550 Kms away from Bangalore.

You may also like to read: Family resorts in Sakleshpur , tourist places near bangalore within 100 kms , bioluminescence in gokarna

My " Laado " throttled its heart out burning the whole lot of 350 kms through the 6 lane Highway (NH-4), all shiny and black smooth tyre gripped with desire. With the Sunrise my Chrome glittered out shine, tearing the forests and mountains of the Western Ghats hovering up beautiful scenery and landscapes all along throughout.

It took 10 hours to reach Gokarna, I am running short of words to describe the nature, view and the journey in between these miles.....!!!

The first sight of "Kudle Beach" blew my mind away. It felt as I have my very own private beach with sparkling blue water, I couldn't hold myself dipping into those waves throwing away all my bag packs aside on the rocks nearby and in a fraction of seconds i was swimming in one of the beautiful shores of Arabian sea. The blue skies, blue water and the white sand took all the stress and pain which i was holding somewhere within from very long, there were no outlook mails, daily office routine, unwanted people, only i, me, myself was there with few lost beautiful unknown faces and couples.

I headed towards one of the many shacks spotting the beach and checked into Little Paradise Inn located at the center of "Kudle Beach" at 3 PM. The staff members and the stay was pleasant, I was with all my luck that day getting an accommodation in the shacks even the season was ON. If u ever get a chance to visit Gokarna, I recommend you to stay in shacks, if you happen to get accommodation in any of the shacks available there, book itright away. You can enjoy the sea and the "Kudle beach" to its fullest this way. And of course, stay up till late night under the starry sky, listening to the soft music of the waves.

Photo of Solo Trip to Gokarna from Bangalore. (1260 Kms Bullet Ride) 9/14 by Upendra Chaudhary Instagram: @upen_leo

Evening was way beautiful than it was expected.. Little paradise Inn was firmly lighted and the soft music was adding essence to the moment.I had enjoyed the music, food and interacting with people around. After 11 PM I went to the beach i.e. just 100 meters right in front of the restaurant and i felt alive. I sat down on sands holding a chilled beer with me, the cool breeze coming from sea and the white waves beneath millions of twinkling stars took me to a new level of happiness. I experienced many of the couples, group of friends, lonely souls were murmuring with their partners and themselves. I am sure that was the best moments of their lives and YES mine too. I stayed up till 1 AM and then i went to sleep since i drove all the way from Bangalore and yes I was a little tired.

Haaah! I woke up at 6 AM and went to beach, I found very few people were awake and a few were practicing Yoga. I had a nice walk with my best music in my ears. For an adventurous soul, this is 'MUST' Start early from "Kudle Beach", catch the glimpse sunrise and cover "Om beach" , Half Moon and the Paradise beach and come back. I can assure you of a gala time in the company of nature at its best. I too decided to leave for Om Beach, it is shaped like "Om" and the two halves of this Om are surprisingly different in nature. The first half of Om, where Namaste Cafe is built is generally where we found Indian families enjoying the sea. Namaste Cafe, situated on one end of Om beach is accessible by road. It is the only 'proper' hotel on Om beach, all the others being shacks situated on the other end. It is clean, and the restaurant is situated by the sea. I spent my whole day at Om Beach Chilling, Swimming,Tracking, Relaxing and head back to kudle beach in evening 7 PM. I had a nice bath at my shack and dipped into relax at the restaurant, had dinner with few friends which i made there. Again went to beach and today the crowd was double than yesterday. I was at the beach till 2 AM tonight.

Again I woke up at 6 AM went to beach but this time i was having heavy hangover lol. I had a nice swim at the sea and had a nice breakfast with a beer and decided to visit Gokarna city tour today. Gokarna town is a tourists delight. Being a religious town, it has many temples attracting Hindu devotees as well as curious tourists. It is a small town and worth walking around to explore, but other than that and visiting the many temples, there isn't much to do. A small local eatery in town definitely deserves a mention here. It serves an exceptionally delicious fish Thali and is located one minute away from Gokarna beach. A sign in the lane before the beach leads you to the house where a local family serves you a fresh meal.

It was the day when i had to drive back to Bangalore, a place which has helped you savor your solitude, if you will ask me how i was going through trust me I was not at all in the mood to come back. I woke up and had a nice breakfast and met with the friends that I made there, with all goodbyes and promises of coming back soon again i started through a different route which I was less aware of and went to Murdeshwar temple. I was in all my luck, to encounter the mandir's aarti at 12:30 PM which was just about to start and I was blessed to be a part of it.

I Started from Murdeshwar at 1 PM and after 100 KMs the world famous Jog Falls was on the way. It is a beautiful waterfall which is further enhanced by the lush green environment, it survives in. The waterfall is created by the Sharavathi River dropping 253 m (830 ft), making it the second-highest plunge waterfall in India. This is an absolutely scenic view that one must see. You can take a plunge in the water at the base.

After Jog Falls the only thing was left is drive back home. I reached Bangalore at 11 PM leaving behind all the joy, happiness, adventure and nice people.Again the daily work, hectic traffic and unwanted calls were welcoming me into the city lights. But that feeling and the moment which i had lived in past 4 days will never be washed with comfort of a city like Bangalore. I am now refreshed and filled with a fresh infants spirit to get exposed to hectic world now... LoVe U GoKaRnA......... ^_^

Hey Travelers !! If you like the experience which I shared with you, please do share it among your closed ones and yes feel free to comment below, will be happy to interact with you lovely people. :)

Bus journey from Bangalore to Gokarna- 10 to 11 hours Stay at Namaste Cafe near OM beach Good Food Rooms are not that great Availibility of hot water - 6am to 9 am Auto fare - 150 /- Do visit Murudeshwara temple if you visit GOKARNA

The beach is very dirty compared to other clean beaches in Gokarna. Lots of bottles/plastic wrappers lying around on the beach, in addition to the dogs. Even the way to the beach is via a big open and smelly gutter, which makes it even less attractive.

Gokarna beach is very neat in comparison with other beaches... With cleanwater and neat Sandy shores.. But got to be careful as the tides occasionally tend to get big making it almost impossible to swim.. While most of the time the beach is quite and subtle.. There are many cafés along the shore for refreshments..

Gokarna beach is said to be one of the main beaches in Gokarna. En route, you will find many temples through the narrow lanes of the town that lead to the beach at the end. It is highly visited by the locals and perhaps the reason why it was very filthy. One can easily skip this beach to avoid watching clothes, undergarments, plastic bags lying down on the beach, cows taking a stroll in the evening hours with cow dung at random places. We hardly could stand there for five minutes and had to return. The only good thing here was the sunset which looked beautiful if I ignore the beach part. I was almost shocked to see the filth since South India is known for its cleanliness and discipline. Anybody, who is even remotely allergic to sanitation, should avoid this place.

This beach is worth visiting for it is very neat and clean. Near to the Gokarna temple. The waves in the morning is smily welcome to the visitors. The public Toilet charges you Rs.5/- even for washing your hands from the sand. Sea shells are available for a price but not that worth when compared to Rameswaram. Avoid the touts who will sell you plastic beads as natural pearls. Lot of foriegners are visiting this beach. Just like Goa this place is also very good for a calm enjoyment.

its an okay beach - lots of dogs in gokarna - the fishing village folks are friendly - do chat them up.

Gokarna Beach Trek – Detailed Guide & Route to Trek the Gokarna Beaches

This article contains a Gokarna beach trek guide with a detailed description of the route and a map.

Gokarna, a temple town in Karnataka, India is gradually growing into a favoured beach destination, and rightly so. Beaches in Gokarna are untouched and tranquil. Om beach is the most popular one, offering water sports and plenty of shacks. On the other hand, Belekan beach is an unheard-of beach with no one but fisherman strutting around. The best way to experience these Gokarna beaches is to hike through all of them. Take a look at this handy guide to the Gokarna beach trek.

Gokarna Beach Trek Guide

While I was staying at Zostel Gokarna , they organized the Gokarna beach trek, led by a volunteer at the hostel, and a whole bunch of us signed up for it. Our group was dropped off to the start point, which is Belekan beach, at dusk. It's ideal to leave your hotel/ hostel at 6 am in order to catch the sunrise at the beach. From there, we hiked to Paradise beach. After a quick rest at paradise, we went over to Half-moon beach. This is where we had an amazing breakfast and took a dip in the ocean, but more on that later. Next, we hiked up to the Om beach viewpoint. This is where you get to see the "Om" shape of the beach. We descended down to Om beach, relaxed, took a dip again and ended our trek at Kudle beach. All the beaches are described in detail, below.

How Long Does it Take to Complete the Gokarna Beach Trek?

given that you start at sunrise, take a break for breakfast at one of the beaches and another break for a swim, it should take anywhere between 5-7 hours depending on how long your breaks last. The group I trekked with took one big break at the half-moon beach for a swim followed by breakfast and another break at Om beach. We started at 6 in the morning and finished at 1.30-2 pm in the afternoon. The duration of the Gokarna beach trek depends on your speed and breaks.

Gokarna Beach Trek:

Without further ado, let's dive into a detailed guide to the famed 5 beach Gokarna beach trek.

1. Belekan Beach

Gokarna beach trek guide - Belekan beach

Belekan beach is the least visited one among all the Gokarna beaches. This is where you start your Gokarna 5-beach trek. Leave your accommodation at 6 am in order to catch the sunrise at Belekan. As can be seen in the picture above, there won't be another soul on the beach except for wee fisherman. Besides, this is the most beautiful beach in Gokarna, in my opinion. Spend some time here to brace yourself for the hike coming your way.

2. Paradise Beach

Gokarna beach trek guide - Paradise beach

From Belekan beach, it's an easy climb and a clearly marked trail to get to Paradise beach. Paradise beach is a popular camping spot among travellers. Here you'll find groups of people who will be packing up their tents in the morning after a dreamy night under the stars, on the beach. It's imperative to mention that due to a large number of people that set up camp here, there's also a lot of trash which is thrown on the beach which is an irresponsible thing to do. In case you decide to camp here, be mindful to take back your trash with you and not to litter along the beach.

The hike from paradise to half moon beach takes you though huge boulders which are picture perfect!

3. Half moon Beach

Gokarna beach trek guide - Half-moon beach

Among all the Gokarna beaches, I had the most fun at the half-moon beach. Irrespective of what trail you follow on your Gokarna beach trek, I highly recommend keeping this beach on your list. There are many reasons why. Firstly, the beach is uninhabited and the only people on the beach are wandering adventurers like you. Secondly, the beach shack right the beach(I didn't note the name) serves the most delicious, generous breakfast at the lowest possible rates! My group ordered our breakfast and swam around in the waters by ourselves until breakfast was prepared. Finally, we had a hearty breakfast of eggs, toast, potato and tea/coffee. Right after that we took a group picture and set out towards Om beach.

4. Om Beach

Gokarna beach trek guide - Om beach

The hike from half-moon beach to om beach is a breathtaking one. This trail will take you through cliffs with the Arabian sea just below you! Of course, you need to be a tad bit careful and maintain steady footing but the views you get are well-worth the cautiousness! Get to the om beach viewpoint, where you can see the "om" shape of the beach. It's also a great spot for clicking pictures. From there, climb down to om beach. Om beach is segregated into 2 sections. The part of the beach from where the trek to half-moon starts has hip shacks, great waves and very few people. The other half of the beach, from where you climb steps to get out of the beach, onto the road is a touristy spot. This is where water sports are conducted and there are scores of people bathing, reading books and having fun.

5. Kudle Beach

Gokarna beach trek guide - Kudle beach

Kudle beach is the last beach on the Gokarna beach trek. even though it's a tiny beach, it has plentiful shacks. After you get here, you can either have lunch at one of the beach shacks or you can head back to your accommodation to freshen up first. That's it!!! You completed the 5 beach trek!! You can spend the rest of the day chilling at the Mantra cafe at Zostel, located on the Kudle beach road. It overlooks the Gokarna beach and has really cool vibes.

I’m not much for a beach person, but the views looked pretty epic from some of those beaches you visited. The breakfast at Half Moon Beach looks especially scrumptious, and I would love to be able to sit around on that uninhabited beach!

Loved reading the post, especially as we were in Gokarna couple of weeks ago. We were there for some other work and hence did not have much time for the beaches. However, we did trek from Gokarna Beach to Kudle and Om Beach. The sea was rough and some of the beaches were closed. The beaches of Gokarna are always a pleasure to behold and we go back again and again.

How to see sunrise at beach in Arabian Sea? Sunset is quite happening.

The sun will rise even if you’re facing the Arabian sea. There will be a lot less people and a lot more peace and quiet during this time as compared to sunset time 🙂
