2. Your holiday booking

a.As you are booking arrangements other than a package holiday, the arrangements will not be financially protected.

b.To make a booking you can contact us in several ways; directly over the telephone, via our website at www.emeraldstar.ie (“Website”) or through an approved travel agent.

c.The minimum number of people required to hire and to be on board a boat is 2 adults, or 3 adults on our Vision boats. An “adult” is defined as someone who is 18 years old or over (or 21 years old and over in Ireland and Canada). For easier handling in locks and when mooring we recommend at least three adults on all our larger boats, greater than 12m in length. The number of passengers on board may not exceed the maximum amount of passengers the boat is licensed for.

d.A booking is made, and our terms and conditions apply in full, from the time at which we send a Booking Confirmation. The person making the booking (the “lead name” or the “Hirer”) must be 18 years old or over and when you make a booking you guarantee that you have the authority to accept and do accept on behalf of your party the terms of these booking conditions. We may transfer your booking to another company in our group, but this will have no effect on your holiday arrangements.

e.Whether you book alone or as a group, we will only deal with the lead name in all subsequent correspondence, including notifications of changes, amendments and cancellations. The lead name is responsible for ensuring the accuracy of the personal details or any other information supplied about any person travelling, in relation to the booking, and for passing on any information regarding the booking or any changes made in relation thereto, to all persons travelling on such booking, including but not limited to information on schedule changes or copies of booking confirmations.

f.When you receive the Booking Confirmation, if there is an obvious error we reserve the right to correct it as soon as we become aware of it, but will do this within 7 days of issuing the Booking Confirmation or, if your departure is within 7 days, no later than 24 hours before you go. The Booking Confirmation will be emailed to you (to the address given to us by the lead name at the time of booking) and will not be issued unless payment of the due balance has been received.

g.For those holidays where an additional local payment is required this will be confirmed to you. A local payment is a portion of the holiday cost which must be paid directly to the local representative as instructed. If the price of your holiday includes a local payment this must be paid in the currency specified. Please note that your holiday price will not be considered to have been paid in full until the local payment has been made. Tourist taxes, resort fees or similar that are charged locally may be implemented or changed without prior warning. We do not accept responsibility for these costs, which must be paid by you and are not included within your holiday price.

h.Your personal safety is of paramount importance to us and therefore it is imperative that you advise us at the time of booking of any condition, medical or otherwise, that might affect your or other people’s enjoyment of the trip. This should include, but not be limited to, any special dietary requirements, allergies and any reduced mobility affecting you or members of your booking. Please contact us by email at [email protected] to discuss any such requirements.

i.All prices shown in any printed materials are 'from' prices and shown as a guide only. They are accurate at the date published, but we reserve the right to change any of those prices from time to time. Current and accurate pricing can be obtained from our website or from our sales teams In the unlikely event of an administrative error leading to an incorrect price being displayed, we reserve the right to correct it (including after a booking has been confirmed). Offers are not combinable unless expressly stated and may be withdrawn at any time. All quotations are provisional until confirmed in writing on your Booking Confirmation. Before you make a booking we will give you the up-to-date price of your chosen holiday including the cost of any supplements, upgrades or additional facilities which you have requested.

j.Extras not booked and paid for at the time of booking are subject to subsequent price increases and extras booked and paid for at the base will be charged at the then prevailing prices charged at the base. Certain payments, as indicated in the pricing information, may be taken locally at the destination base in local currency.

3. Paying for Your Holiday and Insurance

a.When you make your booking you must pay a deposit of 50% of the holiday cost. The balance of the price of your holiday must be paid at least 90 days before your departure date. If you are booking within 90 days of departure full payment must be made at the time of booking. If the deposit and/or balance is not paid in time, we shall cancel your booking. If the balance is not paid in time we shall retain your deposit and any other relevant charges.

b.Once a booking has been confirmed, offers and discounts cannot be applied retrospectively

c.If you book through an agent, all contact with you will be via them.

d.You may also be required to pay for any non-transferable and non-refundable items, such as Damage Liability Recudction and any other applicable supplements due, at the time of balance and they may be non-refundable in the event of cancellation.

e.We do not accept payments made by Diners, American Express or cheque. We will accept payments by credit cards (Visa, Mastercard) and by bank transfer.

f.Adequate and valid travel insurance for your chosen itinerary is compulsory for all travellers and it is a condition of accepting your booking that you agree you will have obtained adequate and valid travel insurance. The exception to this is for domestic travel, where adequate and valid travel insurance is not compulsory, but we strongly recommend you have cover in place (in particular cover for medical, cancellation, property & personal belongings). For the purposes of this clause “domestic travel” shall be either (i) travel on a Le Boat holiday in Europe which starts and finishes in your (and all your guests) country of residence; and/or (ii) travel on a Le Boat holiday which starts and finishes in the EU where you, and your entire party of guests, are residents of the EU and carry with you all paperwork, cards (including a European Health Insurance Card) and/or other information to benefit from the right to reciprocal health care offered by EU Member States. You must satisfy yourselves that such medical care will be sufficient for your needs.

We recommend you take out insurance as soon as your booking is confirmed. You are strongly advised to insure yourself against any possible risk that may occur and in particular to ensure that you have sufficient insurance in respect of dependent relatives and force majeure events. You are required to carry proof of insurance with you.

4. Damage Deposit & Damage Liability Reduction (DLR)

a.All Customers are required to pay a Damage Deposit on arrival at the base.

b.You will be liable for any damages and costs if it is determined that (i) your boat and/or equipment is returned damaged; and/or (ii) that there are direct costs associated with an incident during your cruise; and/or (iii) that there is loss or damage caused to property belonging to a 3rd party by your acts or omissions during your cruise (a “Third Party Claim”). Subject to paragraph (d) below, in such an event, you will be charged up to the full value of your Damage Deposit at the base at the end of your holiday.

c.You remain liable for any Third Party Claim(s) that are brought to our attention following your checkout. Subject to paragraph (d) below, in such an event, we reserve the right to pursue a claim against you up to the full value of your Damage Deposit.

d.If any damage or loss referred to in clause 4b and 4c is caused as a result of your negligence or reckless conduct you will be liable for the full extent of the loss suffered by Le Boat and if such loss is in excess of the value of the Damage Deposit, we reserve the right to pursue a claim against you for the full extent of our loss.

e.Acts that will be considered as negligence or reckless conduct will include, without limitation, cruising under the influence of alcohol and/or drugs, not having sufficient crew in charge of the boat at all times, having a person who is not an adult (as defined earlier) driving the boat, absence of the nominated Captain or 2nd-in-charge (see 14c), disregard of local navigation rules and navigation limits.

f.During the booking process you will be provided with the option of either purchasing Le Boat Damage Liability Reduction (“DLR”) or paying a higher Damage Deposit at the base as set out below. You will not be able to proceed with your booking unless you agree to one of the options and by asking us to confirm your booking you are agreeing to comply with the content of this section and make any required payment. If you elect to pay the higher Damage Deposit you may change your mind at any point up to departure and purchase DLR.

g.The Damage Deposit will be taken as a pre-authorisation on your credit card, at our base, prior to embarkation. If you fail to provide a payment pre-authorisation, we reserve the right to cancel your booking without further liability and without any right to a refund and you will not be entitled to continue with the charter. A pre-authorisation means that instead of actually debiting funds from your card, we just put a temporary “hold” on the funds. We therefore recommend that you ensure you have sufficient funds in your account.

h.You will be asked to sign a form before embarkation confirming that you fully understand your obligations in the event of any loss or damage to the boat, ancillary equipment or third party property.

i.On return of the boat to the base following the charter period and following inspection of the boat by our base staff, in the event that we are satisfied that there is no apparent damage to the boat on its return from you, our base staff will cancel the payment pre-authorisation. Funds will become available in your account within 1-30 days of cancellation of a pre-authorisation depending on each individual banks process. Please note that any monies paid in respect of Damage Liability Reduction are a non-refundable sum to reduce your Damage Deposit.

j.If we determine damage, loss or direct costs (as above) we reserve the right to charge up to the full value of your Damage Deposit. We may use all or part of the value of the Damage Deposit paid by you to repair any damage caused to the boat or its contents during the period of your arrangements, including without limitation the costs involved in lifting the boat for a full inspection to assess the damage to the boat.

k.In the event that the costs associated with losses or damages suffered by us as a result of any breach by you of these booking conditions is less than the value charged to you, we shall refund the balance of the value of the Damage Deposit paid. This will be refunded as soon as reasonably possible after the damage has been repaired or the repair costs have been ascertained. This could take up to six months or longer depending on the nature of the damage.

l.In the event of any disagreement over damage or loss, we shall retain the full value of the relevant Damage Deposit paid by you until the matter is resolved.

m.Important notes i.The Damage Deposit is a mandatory requirement and is a condition of your booking. The sum due is set out in the table below.

ii.We recommend that you purchase Le Boat Damage Liability Reduction (DLR) upfront to reduce the value of the Damage Deposit payable at the base. DLR is an optional item and we reserve the right to change the daily rate at any time. If you take out DLR when you book our published rates at the time of booking will apply. You may elect to take DLR at any time up to departure but please bear in mind the daily rate can be change and you will be required to pay the prevailing rate as at the date you choose to take out the DLR. Our current rates are available at: www.leboat.com/travel-information/extras and will also be made available to you upon booking.

5. If You Cancel Your Holiday

a.You, or any member of your party, may cancel your travel arrangements at any time. Written notification by email to [email protected] from the lead name or your travel agent must be received at our office. Since we incur costs in cancelling your travel arrangements, you will have to pay cancellation charges as follows (see also the exception below):

b.Your deposit is non-refundable, even if the cancellation charge calculated is lower than the deposit amount paid.

c.If the reason for your cancellation is covered under the terms of your insurance policy, you may be able to reclaim these charges; You will remain responsible for the full amount of your insurance premium and this will not be refunded in the event of your cancellation. Please note that certain costs may be refunded should you cancel the entire charter (e.g. Collision Damage Waiver) before cancellation charges are applied.

6. If You Change Your Booking

a.If, after our Booking Confirmation has been issued, you wish to change your travel arrangements in any way, for example your chosen departure date (in the same cruising season), destination or boat, we will do our utmost to make these changes but it may not always be possible. Any request for changes to be made must be in writing from the lead name or your travel agent. The price of your holiday may increase or decrease to reflect the changes requested by you. If the new holiday cost is higher you must pay the difference. If the new holiday cost is lower then we will give you credit for the difference which you can redeem against pre-booked extras or a future booking. You should be aware that these costs could increase the closer to the departure date that changes are made and you should contact us as soon as possible. Please check whether your holiday insurance will cover any changes or increased costs resulting from a change.

b.Unless you have booked and paid for the Holiday Flex Plan (see 6c below) then: (i) you will be asked to pay an administration charge of €70 per booking amendment as well as any further sums in accordance with clause (a) above; and (ii)should you request a major alteration within 90 days of departure date (such as, but not limited to, a change of date or location or boat style) then this will be treated as a cancellation and re-booking and the cancellation charges detailed below shall apply.

c.Holiday Flex Plan: You may choose to purchase our Holiday Flex Plan, which entitles you to make, subject to availability, unlimited changes to your departure date (for seasons on sale at the time of the amendment), duration, base, region and boat type, or transfer your booking to another person, for no additional amendment fee. This Holiday Flex Plan is subject to the following conditions: (i) Any requested amendment is subject to the provisions of clause 6a of these terms and conditions; (ii) when making amendments made under the Flex Plan, you may choose to leave alternative arrangements “open” to be rebooked at a later date. If left “open”, alternative arrangements must be rebooked with one year of requesting the amendment. After such time, your request will be deemed to be a cancellation; (iii) The Holiday Flex Plan is only available for purchase at the point you confirm your original booking with Le Boat and up to 7 days after. After this time, it may not be purchased or added to your booking retrospectively; (iv) The Holiday Flex Plan must be paid for in full at time of purchase and once purchased cannot be cancelled for any reason and no refund or credit note will be provided even if no amendments to your booking are made; (v) Amendments made under the terms of this Holiday Flex Plan may only be made up to (and including) 42 days prior to departure. Any amendment requests which are made within (and including) 41 days of departure will be treated in accordance with clause 6b.

d.You can transfer your booking to another person, who satisfies all the conditions that apply to this booking, by giving us notice in writing at least 14 days before departure provided that the new lead passenger accepts the transfer and these booking conditions. Both you and the new traveller are responsible for paying all costs we incur in making the transfer. Payment is made by you of an administrative charge of a minimum of €70 per booking (except for those who have purchased our Holiday Flex Plan) plus payment of all costs charged or levied by those supplying your travel arrangements.

7. If we cancel your booking

a.We reserve the right to cancel your booking. We will not cancel less than 90 days before your departure date, except for unavoidable and extraordinary circumstances, or failure by you to pay the final balance or any reason beyond our control.

b.For the purposes of these terms and conditions “unavoidable and extraordinary circumstances” are events that neither we nor the suppliers of any service(s) in question could, even with all due care, foresee or avoid and include, without limitation; war (whether actual or threatened), civil unrest, riot, strife, terrorist activity and/or its consequences or the threat of such activity, health risks, infectious disease, epidemics and pandemics and government measures to combat such outbreaks, riot, the act of any government or other national or local authority or the act of any river authorities, unforeseeable technical problems with locks and/or river facilities & equipment or travel restrictions imposed by any government, regulatory authority or other third party; industrial dispute, sanctions, lock and/or waterway closure, natural or nuclear disaster, fire, flood, adverse weather conditions, volcanic eruption, chemical or biological disaster and all similar events outside our or the concerned supplier’s control.

c.If we are forced to cancel your charter after departure we will, wherever possible, make suitable alternative arrangements. If we are unable to make such alternative arrangements, or you reject these for good reason then we will return you to your point of departure and refund you for any unused services, if appropriate.

d.If your holiday is cancelled you can either have a refund of all monies paid or accept an alternative holiday of comparable standard from us if we offer one (we will refund any price difference if the alternative is of a lower value).

e.In the event a refund is paid to you, we will:

i.provide a full refund of your travel insurance premiums if you paid them to us and can show that you are unable to transfer or reuse your policy.

ii.pay compensation as detailed below except where the cancellation is due to unavoidable and extraordinary circumstances (as defined in clause 7).

This table does not preclude you claiming more if you are legally entitled to do so.

8. If we change your booking

a.It is a term of your booking that we are able to make changes to any aspect of your booking. If the change is insignificant, we will ensure that we provide you or your travel agent with the right information about the change at the earliest possible opportunity. We strongly recommend that the travel arrangements you make to and from your specific start or end base are refundable or incur no penalties to change as we reserve the right to change your start and end base, sometimes at late notice. If you make such arrangements which you are then unable to use due to a change in your route we shall not be liable to you for the cost of those arrangements.

b. Major changes: If we are forced by circumstances beyond our control (see clause 7b) to alter significantly any of the main characteristics of the booking you will have the rights set out below. Whether a change is ‘major’ depends on the nature of the charter and may include: change of cruising region, change of departure date and change of boat to a lesser model.

c.We will contact you and you will have the choice of accepting the change or having a refund of all monies paid. You can also accept an alternative holiday, where we offer one (we will refund any price difference if the alternative is of a lower value). We will tell you the procedure for making your choice. Please read any notification of changes carefully and respond promptly as if you do not respond to us within the timescale given your booking may be cancelled.

d.If you choose to accept a refund:

i.we will provide a full refund of your travel insurance premiums if you paid them to us and can show that you are unable to transfer or reuse your policy.

ii.we will pay compensation as detailed below except where the significant change is due to unavoidable and extraordinary circumstances (see clause 7), which means a situation beyond our control, the consequences of which could not have been avoided even if all reasonable measures had been taken.

iii.The compensation that we offer does not exclude you from claiming more if you are entitled to do so.

9. Our Liability to You

a.Our obligations, and those of our suppliers providing any service or facility included in your charter, are to take reasonable skill and care to arrange for the provision of such services and facilities.

b.You must inform us without undue delay of any failure to perform or improper performance of the services included in this holiday. If any of the services included in your holiday are not performed in accordance with these booking conditions, or are improperly performed, by us or the service suppliers, and this has affected the enjoyment of your travel arrangements, you may be entitled to an appropriate price reduction or compensation or both. We will not be liable where any failure to perform or improper performance of the travel services is due to (i) you or another member of your party; and/or (ii) a third party unconnected with the provision of the travel services in the holiday and is unforeseeable or unavoidable; and/or (iii) unavoidable and extraordinary circumstances; and/or (iv) if you or another member of your party is found to have put themselves at risk, been negligent, been under the influence of alcohol or any other substances or behaved in a reckless manner; and/or (v) the criminal acts of suppliers and/or their employees, sub-contractors or agents.

c.Our liability, except in cases involving death, injury or illness, shall be limited to a maximum of three times the cost of your travel arrangements. Our liability will also be limited in accordance with and/or in an identical manner to the following:

i.You agree that any transport company’s (or other supplier’s) own ‘Conditions of Carriage’ will apply to you on any journey by road, where organised or arranged by us. When arranging this transportation for you, we rely on the terms and conditions contained within these international conventions and those ‘Conditions of Carriage'. You acknowledge that all of these terms and conditions form part of your contract with us as well as with the transport company. You can ask us or the travel agent booking your holiday to provide you with a copy of any of the conditions applicable to your journey.

ii.Any relevant international conventions which limit the amount of and conditions under which compensation can be claimed for death, injury, delay to passengers and loss, damage and delay to luggage. We are to be regarded as having all benefit of any limitation of the extent of or the conditions under which compensation is to be paid under these or any conventions. You can ask for copies of the travel service contractual terms, or the international conventions, from our Customer Services Department at [email protected] .

d.Standards of, for example, safety, hygiene and quality vary throughout the transport and destinations that your charter may involve. Sometimes these standards will be lower than those which would be expected in Ireland. The suppliers of the services and facilities included in your holiday should comply with local standards where they are provided.

e.In the event medical care becomes necessary on your trip, you may be hours travel by water, or other non-vehicular transportation from any medical facility. The medical facility you may be treated in may not have the same standards as hospitals or doctor’s offices in your home country. The medical personnel you will be treated by may not speak fluent English and have the same training as medical personnel in your home country. You further acknowledge that an emergency evacuation may be unavailable, expensive and delayed at your boat's location, and that the medical facilities and attention available aboard the boat are limited. Decisions are made by our staff based on a variety of perceptions and evaluations of the situation at hand. You understand and agree to abide by these decisions.

f.This entire clause does not apply to any separate contracts that you may enter into for excursions or activities whilst on holiday for which liability rests with the excursion provider and not us.

10. Complaints and Assistance

a.If you have a complaint about any of the products or services included in your holiday and/or need assistance whilst away, you must notify our local base without undue delay who will try to put things right. If it is not resolved locally, please follow this up within 28 days of your return home by writing to our Customer Services Department at [email protected] or your travel agent giving your booking reference and all other relevant information. If you have a complaint about the holiday, you must still take all reasonable steps to minimise the disruption to your enjoyment of the holiday. This is called ‘mitigation of loss’. Your claim may not succeed or you may not receive compensation if you didn’t complain as soon as possible (on the spot) and give us every reasonable opportunity to put things right, within a reasonable time frame, or if you didn’t accept any reasonable attempts by us to sort out the problem at the time.

b.Le Boat has a breakdown service during normal working hours every day of the week. We will endeavour to attend and repair a breakdown or technical incident as quickly as possible. The Hirer will have no claim against Le Boat for any failure caused by the Hirer including but not limited to grounding, and in such instances the company will reserve the right to recover from the Hirer the expenses incurred in rectifying the matter.

11. Additional assistance

If you’re in difficulty whilst on holiday and ask us to help we will provide appropriate assistance, in particular by providing information on health services, local authorities and consular assistance; and helping you to find alternative arrangements and any necessary phone calls/emails. You must pay any costs we incur, if the situation is your fault and/or caused by your negligence.

12. Passport, Visa, Health, Travel and Immigration Requirements

a.Your specific passport and visa requirements, and other immigration requirements are your responsibility and you should confirm these with the relevant Embassies and/or Consulates. We do not accept any responsibility if you cannot travel because you have not complied with any passport, visa or immigration requirements.

b.We are able to advise on mandatory health requirements; however, we are not medical experts. It is your responsibility to ensure that you obtain proper and detailed medical advice at least 2 months prior to travel for the latest health requirements, recommendations for your destination and any costs. You should check this information at least 2 months before departure and again within 14 days of travel. Where you do not do so and either are not allowed to enter any country, or suffer personal injury or death as a result, we have no liability to you for any cost, loss or damage which you suffer nor will we refund you the cost of any unused portion of your travel arrangements. Clients with existing medical problems, pregnant women and anyone who has recently visited other countries should check requirements with their general practitioner.

c.When assessing whether holidays will operate we use information from our local offices in conjunction with advice from the DFS (Department of Foreign Affairs)and other relevant government bodies. It is your responsibility to acquaint yourself with the travel advice provided by these government bodies. For more information, please visit our Travel Aware page at www.emeraldstar.ie/travel-information and the government website at www.dfa.ie/travel/travel-advice for travel information about your destination country.

13. Conduct

a.We reserve the right to refuse to accept you as a customer or continue dealing with you if we, or another person in authority, believe your behavior is disruptive, causes unnecessary inconvenience, is threatening or abusive, you damage property, you upset, annoy, disturb, or put our staff or agents or other customers in any risk or danger, on the telephone, in writing or in person.

b.If the base manager or any of our resort staff or agents believes that you could be disruptive or that you are suffering from a contagious disease, they can also refuse to let you take your boat.

c.If you are disruptive and prevented from boarding, we will treat your booking as cancelled by you from that moment, and you will have to pay full cancellation charges (see clause 5). We will not be liable for any refund, or compensation or any costs or expenses you incur.

d.As a result of your behaviour during any stage of your holiday, we reserve the right to make a claim against you for any damages, costs and expenses (including legal expenses) incurred as a result, including but not limited to (i) cleaning, repairing or replacing property lost, damaged or destroyed by you, (ii) compensating other customers, staff or agent affected by your actions Criminal proceedings may also be instigated.

e.You are not permitted to sail/cruise on your boat during the hours of darkness (which shall run from the start of sunset to sunrise).

f.You must conform to the rules of river navigation, and also the instruction given by the company and the river authorities. Applicable speed limits for each region will be advised locally and must be observed at all times. You shall restrict your cruising to those waters permitted by the Company, nor engage in towing, sub hiring or lending of the boat.

g.Any boat or other accommodation we arrange for you must only be used by those people named on your Confirmation Invoice or on latest amendment invoice issued. You are not allowed to share the boat or let anyone else stay on board. In accordance with clause 4 you are responsible for the cost of any damage caused to your boat or its contents during your stay. These charges must be met by you and may have to be paid locally.

h.For the purposes of this section reference to “you” or “your” includes any other person in your party.

14. Special Requests and Participation Requirements

a.So that way may fully prepare and provide a safe and comfortable experience, it is important we obtain some information from you about your arrival, and establish who, and how many passengers, will be on board the boat you hire. We collect this information by way of an online ‘Guest Information’ form which all hirers are required to complete. Should this form not be completed prior to your arrival, this could delay you from accessing your boat. You will not be permitted to depart until this information has been received.

b.All customers are expected to satisfy themselves prior to booking that they are fit and able to complete the route of their chosen charter as booked.

c.You must nominate a Captain and a 2nd-in-charge, who must both be an adult (as defined earlier) and who will be responsible for the safety of everyone on board. The captain and 2nd-in-charge will receive a pre-departure briefing prior to setting off, to ensure they are confident and competent to safely and capably navigate and manoeuvre the boat. Should our management team have cause to believe that safe and competent navigation will not be possible, after the provision of adequate instruction & practical guidance, your party will not be permitted to leave the dockside.

d.We will consider special requests when you book. We will tell you whether there is a charge for the request and/or whether we can satisfy the same. We can only guarantee requests for which there is a charge, or those that are confirmed in writing. It is your responsibility to advise us of any special requirements. We regret we cannot accept any booking which is conditional upon the fulfilment of a particular request.

e.Anyone suffering from mobility impairment, illness or disability or undergoing treatment for any physical or medical condition must declare the true nature of such condition at the time of booking and make arrangements for the provision of any medication or other treatment which may be required during the charter. Failure to make such disclosure will constitute a breach of these booking conditions and result in such persons being excluded from the charter, in which case no monies will be refunded.

f.Anyone requiring the use of electrical CPAP equipment should inform the Company’s staff at the time of booking. The Company makes no guarantees that sufficient power will be available and, therefore, in making your booking you acknowledge that suitable power may not always be available to run the CPAP machine. It is your responsibility to only ever use the CPAP equipment in line with manufacturer instructions.

g.For safety reasons, oxygen tanks and oxygen concentrators are not permitted on board. Failure to disclose the need for oxygen tanks and oxygen concentrators to Le Boat staff at the time of booking will constitute a breach of these booking conditions and will result in the persons reliant on them being excluded from the charter, in which case no monies will be refunded.

15. Accidents and Loss/Damage of Equipment

a.If the boat is involved in an accident of any nature, including any damage or injury incurred to third parties, the Hirer must immediately contact the base and complete an accident report form and ask any other party involved to complete the same form. The Hirer will not ask for any repairs to be carried out without Le Boat / Emerald Star’s agreement.

b.On arrival, the Hirer will be asked to check the boat for external signs of damage and indicate these areas on a separate form. Should any equipment be lost, stolen or broken, the Hirer must report this on return of the boat. A separate fee for certain items lost or damaged will be charged. The base team will also advise on any specific routes which are prohibited or restricted, or procedures falling under the control of Inland Waterways Authorities for your cruising area. 20. Fuel Charge and Fuel Deposit

a.The "Fuel" Charge covers the cost of diesel for navigation and heating, gas and engine wear and tear and is calculated on a ‘per hour’ basis. The price is per engine hour used and varies depending on boat, region and fluctuations in diesel prices. Price fluctuations may be more significant than usual if there are unavoidable or extraordinary circumstances (see clause 7b) which affect elements of our Fuel charges i.e. market rates of diesel.

At the start of your cruise, you will be informed how much the hourly charge will be and the current engine hours on your boat will be agreed and recorded with you.

c.At the start of your cruise your boat will have a full tank of fuel. Before departing the base, unless you opt for pre-paid Fuel in accordance with clause 20(e), you will be required to leave an Fuel Deposit, payable locally in local currency as per below.

e. You have the option to purchase ‘pre-paid’ Fuel which covers the cost of any Fuel you use. Pre-paid Fuel is an optional item and may be purchased at any time up to 7 days prior to your departure date. The daily rate for Pre-paid Fuel may change and we cannot fix the rate until it is confirmed in writing on your Booking Confirmation. If you choose to purchase pre-paid Fuel, you will not be required to leave a Fuel Deposit or pay for any other Fuel you use as outlined in this clause 20. See Ireland from a new perspective...as the Captain of your own cruise. Let Emerald Star put you at the helm of a boat that fits your and your family's needs. You've perhaps dreamed of a week-long European canal/river cruise but feel you lack the nautical experience for it. Every year, thousands of people discover just how easy inland cruising is. Hands on help and instruction are always given before departure. You will cast off with appropriate instructions to the first mate only when you...and Emerald Star...feel confident that you will have a great holiday. Most of the time, a half-hour instructional run is all that is necessary. Welcome to the world of Waterways cruising in Ireland on the Shannon-Erne . What a remarkable waterway it is, all 500 km.

You may not have enough vacation time to do it all, but three well-equipped and well-placed marinas at Carrick-on-Shannon, Belturbet, and Portumna enable the Emerald Star to arrange any part of it for you.

For instance, choose the week-long Belturbet to Carrick-on-Shannon cruise, 150 km through 32 modernized locks. You will join the Shannon at the little village of Leitrim. From there, you can take a side trip into scenic Lough Allen and then further south, island-studded Lough Key is a jewel among Roscommon's lakes.

Or, spend your week on the Lough Erne cruise which will take you from Belturbet to Belleek, a distance of 130 km with no locks. You will explore the upper Lough Erne with its beautiful reed-covered islands and be able to tie up at Enniskillen . Lower Lough Erne is one of Europe's least crowded waterways. Tully Castle, Boa Island, and Castle Caldwell are just some of the attractions before you reach Belleek, home of world-famous pottery.

You may prefer to travel south from Carrick-on-Shannon to Portumna (150 km, 5 locks). Your prop will stir the tranquil waters of Lough Ree and then Lough Derg as you sail south past Lanesborough, Athlone, the ancient monastic site at Clonemacnoise and Shannon Bridge. Each of these is a one-week cruise but three-day charters are an option, and you don't have to retrace your course. Emerald Star will have your car waiting for you when you arrive at the destination of your choice. And a wide variety of beautiful cruisers is available that sleep from two to ten adults. And be sure to rent bikes to take along for easy access to portside restaurants and attractions .

Rest assured you won't be casting off into uncharted waters. Emerald Star furnishes detailed waterway guides and cruising maps for the entire Shannon-Erne. RIVER SHANNON CRUISE WITH EMERALD STAR

River Shannon Cruise with Emerald Star / Le Boat

The island of Ireland is one of the most beautiful countries on God’s great Earth, but maybe we’re biased.  With emerald green fields, rugged mountain ranges and sweeping coastlines; it’s easy to see why Ireland attracts tourists from across the world.  Ireland is scenic and popular with walkers, anglers and adventure seekers.  For those with a penchant for water it’s easy to navigate the loughs, canals and rivers by cruiser or canoe.  Fringed with blue flag beaches, rocky crevices and caves, the craggy coast is just waiting to be explored.  Running through the heart of Ireland is the River Shannon which flows 360 km (224 mi) from the Shannon Pot, on the slopes of Cuilcagh Mountain, County Cavan; to its final point in the Shannon Estuary, County Limerick.  Our River Shannon Cruise with Emerald Star by Le Boat begins in Portumna, County Galway and ends in Carrick-on-Shannon, County Leitrim.

The beautiful and scenic River Shannon in the heart of Ireland

Easter weekend and the predicted weather is sunshine, long overdue in Ireland if you ask me.  Having just returned from a River Thames Cruise with Le Boat , we were delightfully surprised to receive a phone call asking if we would like to move a boat from Portumna to Carrick-on-Shannon.  Of course, we had nothing planned and accepted the job in hand.  How nice that Le Boat we’re confident in our boat handling skills to offer us the job of moving an expensive Horizon 4 cruiser on their behalf!  On this River Shannon cruise with Emerald Star trip would be The Callaghan Posse, Nana and Granda, not forgetting our pup, Rosie.  The first ‘holiday’ that we have ever taken with Nana and Granda.  Would this family holiday be the first of many or quite possibly the first and last?

Le Boat Horizon 4 on the River Shannon in Ireland

PORTUMNA TO CARRICK-ON-SHANNON

Arriving in Portumna on a chilly but sunny day, we introduced ourselves to the ladies at reception, Sarah and Angie.  The boat we’d be transporting on our River Shannon cruise with Emerald Star (the Irish branch of Le Boat) would be a Horizon 4 from the Premier range.  The Horizon 4 is much bigger than the Crusader used on our previous River Thames cruise with Le Boat.  Bigger, and much more luxurious!  After an initial assessment and short cruising exercise, we left Portumna and set sail towards Banagher which would be the destination for our overnight mooring.  The luxurious Horizon 4 has four thrusters (bow and stern).  The thrusters make the Horizon 4 more manoeuvrable, which in turn makes the boat easier to moor and easier to dock at the locks.  Docking at Banagher, aided by the thrusters; was a cinch!

Welcome to Portumna, home to Emerald Star Le Boat

EMERALD STAR HORIZON 4

About the Horizon 4.  The Horizon 4 boat is from the Premier range of boats offered by Emerald Star (Le Boat).  At 13.60 m long by 4.35 m wide, the Horizon 4 has four separate cabins each with an en-suite bathroom.  This model offers a variety of sleeping arrangements (single, doubles and singles that convert to doubles) to accommodate 8 (+1).  The spacious size and versatility of the Horizon 4 is excellent, a great choice for those wanting a little luxury for their cruising experience.  And for sun worshippers, reclining sun loungers on the top deck…although, it’s quite tricky sunbathing wearing a life jacket!  An amazing boat for our River Shannon cruise with Emerald Star.

note: the Horizon 4 requires a minimum of 4 adults for booking.

THE PLACE OF THE POINTED ROCKS

Along the River Shannon orange and green markers show you the right channel to take.  Our first stop was Banagher; a small town in County Offaly.  The name Banagher comes from its Irish name, which translates to English as “the place of the pointed rocks on the Shannon’.  Beside the sheltered harbour was a fantastic children’s play park and a bouncy castle had been inflated beside.  Lily-Belle and Matilda wasted no time in dragging Granda to the swings then into the Fairy Garden.  I chose to take Rosie for a short walk and ventured into the nearby boat yard to have a look at the boats.  Such a beautifully peaceful spot to moor for the night!

Play park at Banagher harbour on the bank of the River Shannon

A HOME FROM HOME

Although the River Shannon cruise with Emerald Star journey time from Portumna to Banagher is less than 3 hours; it’s always nice to disembark and stretch the legs.  A warm pleasant evening and local children sat on the edge of the harbour wall fishing in the River Shannon.  In the harbour a small number of vessels had also moored for the evening and spaces were limited.  A calm evening gave us the opportunity to enjoy the bbq on the top deck of the Horizon 4.  And as the sun began to set on the horizon, we retired inside for board games and a cuppa.  The curtains were drawn and our Horizon 4 felt just like home…warm and cosy!

FORTY SHADES OF  GREEN

A very peaceful night and after breakfast our journey on the River Shannon cruise with Emerald Star continued toward Carrick-on-Shannon.  Next stop would be Shannonbridge. The scenery is very different on the River Shannon than on the River Thames.  No riverside homes, no perfectly manicured garden lawns and no artistic animal structures.  Just field after field with each field being a different shade of green than the previous field.  It’s little wonder that Johnny Cash wrote a song about Ireland being ‘ the moorlands and the midlands with their forty shades of green ‘.  Every now and again a derelict stone monastery changed the shape of the skyline.  Snowy white Mute swans nest by the Shannon’s edge on mounds of reeds, fiercely protecting their eggs as bulrushes sway in the wind.  The River Shannon is a place free from noise and disturbance.

Fishing from a boat on the River Shannon

THE ONE THAT GOT AWAY

Banagher to Shannnonbridge was uneventful.  The journey allowed us to chat, take in scenery and watch anglers bobbing about in their boats hoping to catch, rather than fall foul of ‘the one that got away’!  The River Shannon is teeming with perch, trout, salmon, pike, and bream.  Above the rippling surface, Canadian geese and mallard ducks patrol the river banks.  There isn’t much shelter on the open stretches of the River Shannon and these stretches can often be choppy even on the calmest days.  Just 90 minutes after setting sail on the River Shannon cruise with Emerald Star, our Horizon 4 moored at Shannonbridge, home to Luker’s Bar.  Dating back to 1757. stepping inside the door of Luker’s Bar is like stepping back in time.  The old shop is a favourite with tourists, as is the Queen Victoria Regina fireplace; the last one in operation in the British Isles.

Luker's Bar in Shannonbridge overlooking the River Shannon

SUNSHINE ON THE SHANNON

Shannonbridge Harbour was quiet but certainly not devoid of visitors or life.  Fishermen took boats onto the flowing river and fished with lures beside the arched bridge.  The sun was out which gave us a chance to sit on the upper deck of the Horizon 4 and simply do nothing.  Lily-Belle sat at the rear of the Horizon 4 on the superior bench seat and I took photos.  Beside us on the moorings was a very long barge (houseboat) occupied by a family of 3 and their jack russell.  Mummy chatted with the owner for a short time, gaining knowledge of lock times and places to visit along the River Shannon.  After a lunch time visit to Luker’s Bar in Shannonbridge and a cup of coffee with cake on the Horizon 4, our time had come to venture further up the River Shannon.

Fishing on the River Shannon beside Shannonbridge Harbour

CRUISING TO CLONMACNOISE CASTLE

Ropes untied and the Horizon 4 left Shannonbridge Harbour and set sail once more.  Next stop on the River Shannon cruise with Emerald star; Clonmacnoise.  Cruising into Clonmacnoise the skyline is dominated by the imposing ruins of a 12th century castle perched high on the motte.  The area around the base of the motte has been cordoned off; presumably to stop tourists climbing on the precariously balanced castle ruins.  The site houses the ruins of seven churches and a cathedral and also a number of crosses and graveslabs.  Many of the churches on site have undergone some form of conservation in recent years, and the Nun’s Church remains under wraps as it too undergoes the same renovations.  A few photos and we boarded our vessel to set sail to Athlone…lock closure at 18:00, this was going to be tight!

Relaxing on the upper deck of the Horizon 4 provided by Le Boat

ALL IS NOT QUIET IN ATHLONE

Our Horizon 4 pulled up to Athlone Lock at 17:53…told you it was going to be tight!  The lock keepers smiled and advised that we’d be the last boat through this evening.  A quiet mooring place was pointed out beside The Strand on the east side of the River Shannon.  As dinner was being prepared and cooked by Mummy and Nana, Granda and Matilda took a gentle stroll into town.  Dinner inside the spacious Horizon 4 cabin was followed by board games.  Earlier in the day Nana and the girls made and decorated an Easter cake for dessert.  On the west side of the River Shannon loud music blasted from a bar.  I felt empathy for the boats and occupants moored beside, unless the bar was what attracted them to the west side?  For me, I was glad to be on the quiet side of the River Shannon.

Athlone on the River Shannon

THIS BAR IS FULL OF BULLSH*T

After a great evening meal cooked on board the Horizon 4, I decided a chilled beer would help wash the food down.  Just around the corner from the boat was Gertie Browne’s pub.  I took the opportunity to pop in for a cheeky beer, Lily-Belle, as usual; was in tow.  Gertie Browne’s is a fascinating pub that is full of wonderful salvaged memorabilia and decorated with an eclectic arrangement of trinkets and knick-knacks; really cool.  Lily-Belle found a sign that made her giggle…Bullsh*t Corner’.  One can imagine there’d be limited space at ‘Bullsh*t Corner’ as patrons got more and more sozzled!  Pint of Guinness for me and a glass of coke for Little Miss C.  After, and before returning to the Horizon 4; we took a slow walk along The Strand which overlooked the River Shannon.

Knights on guard at Bertie browne's pub in Athlone

ROCKING THE RIVER REE

Bacon and egg sarnies for breakfast are always a good start for the day ahead.  After clearing away the breakfast dishes the Horizon 4 pulled out of Athlone and prepared for our crossing of Lough Ree.  Skies were blue but being exposed on open water; it was cold enough steering the boat from the top deck.  The girls stayed below deck with their Easter Activity Packs and Granda and I were left up-top steering, bird watching and chatting about farming, Irish history and Granda’s loathing of open water.  Lough Ree was quite choppy and certainly tougher going than the narrower stretches of the River Shannon.  The Horizon 4 has a top speed of just 8 kph but thankfully the wide hull makes the Horizon quite stable on choppy water.  Aside from the odd cruiser, or a passing speedboat laden with fishermen; Lough Ree was relatively quiet.

Easter activities on board the Le Boat Horizon 4 from Emerald Star

FROM REE TO ROOSKY

After a lengthy time crossing Lough Ree we had a steady cruise to Tarmonbarry Lock where we moored for lunch and walked Rosie.  The sun was shining and there was lots of visitors to the area and families having picnics.  As well as the lock, Tarmonbarry has a lifting bridge that had to be opened for the Horizon 4 to pass through.  Our next stop was planned for Roosky but as this came upon us quite soon after Tarmonbarry; we continued toward Dromod.  At Roosky Lock the keeper had to cycle along the towpath to stop traffic and open a lifting bridge for our passing.  Race on, Horizon 4 vs Bike = bike won!  The lock keeper advised that as the Horizon 4 is quite long at 13.60 m, we may struggle to get the boat around the tight entrance at Dromod Harbour.  I like a challenge!

Rosie on board the Le Boat Horizon 4 on the River Shannon

CHALLENGE ACCEPTED, THE PRESSURE IS ON

Roosky Lock to Dromod Harbour takes no time and on the approach I could see the harbour was full of boats.  Was there enough space for one?  A few people gathered on the harbour path watching as I navigated the Horizon 4 around the very tight bend into the harbour.  I could feel Granda breathing down my neck!  Having thrusters on the boat was a huge bonus and navigating the tight entrance was simple.  No space at the inn so I had to do a 180 and renavigate the entrance that was now the exit.  Perfectly manoeuvred and I even received applause from a couple of the bystanders.  Thankfully, beside the main harbour is a small side harbour and there was enough space for the Horizon 4.  This time I reversed in and once again, executed to perfection.  Even Granda commented he was impressed!

View of the River Shannon from inside the Le Boat Horizon 4

NO ROOM FOR ROSIE

Evening time and we ventured off the luxurious Horizon 4 to dine at a local pub, Cox’s Steakhouse.  Sadly, unlike pubs along the River Thames; Rosie wasn’t welcome on the premises.  I returned Rosie to the boat, settled her then returned to the pub for food.  Exhausted, Matilda fell asleep on the comfy pub bench seat before her food arrived.  Our waitress kindly took Matilda’s food away and packaged it as a takeaway.  Matilda awakened as we settled the bill and her first question…where’s my dinner?  Food at Cox’s Steakhouse was excellent, as was the service.  Back on the Horizon 4 Matilda tucked into her takeaway and Rosie got a titbit of steak that Mummy brought home from the pub.  Having slept, Matilda was now wide awake and point blank refusing to go to bed!  Let’s just say t’was a long, long night with our energetic monkey running riot!

Rosie in her new house beside the River Shannon

FINAL DAY AND OUR FINAL DESTINATION

Being asked to move a Premier Horizon 4 from Portumna to Carrick-on-Shannon was a blessing.  The Horizon 4 perfectly accommodated 4 adults, 2 children and 1 dog with room to spare.  Our final cruising day from Dromod Harbour to Carrick-on-Shannon had me steer from the primary position inside the warm cabin.  The rain fell, the wind swirled and the temperature dropped, but being Ireland, after an hour of wet; out came the sun.  It’s common knowledge that in Ireland you can have all four seasons occur within one day!  Back on the upper deck we enjoyed our last hours on the Horizon 4 and took a few family photos.  And there it was, one final bridge before the Emerald Star / Le Boat moorings came into view.  Aside from a 2 hour taxi ride back to Portumna to lift cars, our River Shannon adventure was over!

The Callaghan Posse on board the Horizon 4 with from Le Boat

WOULD WE GO BACK?

Before a fisherman could tell the tale of ‘the one that got away’, yes we would!!  Once again we had a great time on the River Shannon cruise with Emerald Star on board a Horizon 4; provided by Emerald Star / Le Boat.  The 40 shades of green fields and the peace and tranquility are enough to make us want to return to the River Shannon time and time again  As second-time river cruisers I can honestly say we had a great time boating on the River Shannon.  As a family it was great for the girls to have Nana and Granda on board…and, not one single squabble!  If you haven’t tried river cruising before, you should.  I think you’ll be pleasantly surprised at how much fun river cruising is!

note: the eagle eyed amongst you will spot that we’ve mentioned the Horizon 4 all the way through this post.  However, when you look at photos you will see the boat stickers say Horizon 3.  We’ve not made an error, the boat stickers are incorrect…and although the Horizon 3 and 4 are almost identical; we did indeed transport the Horizon 4.

With a very special  THANK YOU  to (in no particular order):

  • Le Boat – for entrusting the transportation of the Premier Horizon 4 to The Callaghan Posse,
  • Rachel Gifford (Le Boat Marketing Manager UK and Ireland) – for organising our second river cruise with Le Boat / Emerald Star,
  • Sarah and Angie (Emerald Star / Le Boat Portumna) – for your very warm welcome and the ice lollies,,
  • Elgin (Emerald Star / Le Boat Carrick-on-Shannon) – for your lovely welcome to Emerald Star and for organising our taxi,
  • Waterways Ireland and Lock Keepers – for the fantastic work you do in keeping the River Shannon and the locks running smoothly,
  • Michael Glancy – for keeping Granda and I entertained on our taxi journey, pleasure to meet you.

We are extremely grateful to have met each and every one of you.  Looking forward to cruising the River Shannon in the not so distant future, until then… taisteal sábháilte!

LILY-BELLE SAYS (10)

The Horizon 4 was huge and much trickier to steer than the Crusader.  There was’t much to see on the River Shannon but I still love going on a boat.  We saw wild goats and donkeys. There wasn’t as many swans as there is on the River Thames, and they didn’t know what to make of the swan food we brought back from Windsor.  I can’t wait to do another boating holiday!

MATILDA SAYS (4)

I loved going on holiday with Nana and Granda and Rosie.  We made an Easter cake and had fun at the park.
