The blast from the past.

Street art is an ever-changing game. What if something great was at that exact spot a month ago but you can’t see it now? Street Up team truly believes in time travel so we made sure that you could go back in time with our QR codes placed all around the city.

Walk and see

Savamala tour.

Savamala district is the most intriguing part of Belgrade. It has changed drastically during the past few years and it still does. Once a wealthy area left to decay became a place for new artistic movements and cultural gatherings. The artists transformed the abandoned buildings and warehouses into art galleries and cultural centers, and the streets became flooded with incredible street art. For a reason some of the best murals, stencils, paste-ups and street art interventions are situated in this part of town, and you will find out why.

Meeting point: Republic Square Duration: 2-3 hours

Price: 23 €

Dorćol Tour

Dorćol is the oldest neighborhood of Belgrade situated alongside Kalemegdan fortress and on the Danube waterfront. These charming narrow streets speak by themselves about the mixture of antique and modern. One of the first murals in Belgrade is still adorning Skadarlija street, the well known bohemian quarter of Belgrade that once was a meeting place for the greatest cultural figures in Serbia. Right next door, in the former industrial brewery, a new alternative art scene started to flourish. In a few years it became a new epicenter for culture, art, music and literature in Belgrade. The street art naturally came along. And wait, that’s just the beginning of the story. We will stumble upon a lot more on our way down to the river and back. Beside graffiti, stencils and illustrations you will encounter many portraits in black and white made as a cultural project of one sport fan group and few colossal mural collaborations painted during the Meeting of styles gatherings.

Price: 23 €

Ciglana Extended Tour

Ciglana is an old abandoned brick factory converted into a place for artistic getaway. Apart from the city center, living its own life, this place seems like one big industrial art installation. This is the center for artistic studios, music concerts, cultural gatherings and also a place for street art expression. We will walk through Ciglana’s unusual inside and outside gallery, grab some drinks and snacks in the bar and hang out in artistic studios. You can visit Ciglana as part of extended Savamala or Dorćol tour.

Meeting point: Republic Square Duration: +1-2 hours *

* this tour is only possible as an extended Savamala or Dorcol street art tour

Price: 16 €

Meeting point: Republic Square Duration: 1 hour

* painting material is included in price

Belgrade Street Art Walks

We love it and we want to share it with you :)

every TUESDAY, THURSDAY and SATURDAY

# WhatIsSTAW?

Street Art Walks Belgrade (STAW BLGRD) is a research project conducted by the Belgrade-based Civil Association Artikal. Our goal is to explore artistic production in the local scene from 2017 to 2025. These walks are also imagined as an educational part of our work, adjusted to a wider audience and accessible to everyone who finds graffiti and street art even remotely interesting.

The ongoing offer Belgrade Street Art Experience is made in collaboration with Explore Belgrade! and covers graffiti, street art and murals. The walks lasts for 3h and takes place in the city's very center. For booking, please visit Explore Belgrade! website, or if you're interested in other walks offered here on our site, write to us: streetartwalksbelgrade(at)gmail.com. For any updates, follow our Facebook page .

Silver Linings Walk – is a two part walk that starts at the end of main pedestrian street, Knez Mihajlova, in front of the City Library, and continues past Terazije and Slavija, up Makenzijeva to the corner of Mileševska and Žička. Silver Lining Walk Center ends at Slavija square and Silver Lining Walk Vračar starts there. This two part walk gives an overview of traditional mural paintings in the city center, as well as the highlights of contemporary graffiti and street art in the city. 3B (Belgrade Belly Button) Walk – takes place in one of the oldest areas of the city, Dorćol. The meeting place is in front of the City Library on Knez Mihajlova and from there we will be walking up and down the hill in serpentines, stopping to take in the graffiti and street art works that currently line these streets. Hall of Fame Walks – From the City Library in Knez Mihajlova we walk down Pariska and Karađordeva, explore the Savamala area and continue uphill to the center of the city. During this walk you will see some of the best works that have served as a coordinated attempt to revive this once glorious and now mostly neglected area of the city.

# WhatWeDo?

The controversy surrounding graffiti and street art seems to be one of their most attractive qualities. Unfortunately, this feature is almost the only thing that the audience is allowed to see, while behind the scenes there is a whole universe of fresh, exciting and creative ideas.

This is the world we, art historians, want to uncover and share with you. Out there on the streets, in its natural setting, graffiti and street art will get a grip on you, for better or worse. These walks are a part of a wider research project that aims to document the contemporary graffiti and street art scene in Belgrade and will result in an academic publication. One of the goals of the project is to unify research, documentation, academic activities and educational workshops/walks. It is very important to us to share the knowledge we acquire during our research with the widest possible audience and to not restrict the access to a very small academic circle. We love it and we want to share that experience with you.

Ljiljana Radošević

Ljiljana Radošević

is an art historian and cultural manager from Belgrade, currently finishing her Ph.D. studies about street art at the University of Jyväskylä, Finland.

The title of her Ph.D. thesis is “Understanding Street Art”. This title was not chosen lightly, because she has been interested in graffiti and street art since she started her university studies. They have been her focus of interest throughout most of her professional life. In 2000 she started following Belgrade graffiti artists on a regular basis and that was it, she was hooked. She did her MA Art History thesis about Belgrade graffiti and has continued to follow the scene ever since. She has also organized several exhibitions, given many lectures and co-organized the graffiti project “New Way, New Life” for BELEF in 2003. Graphic forms of expression in art and popular culture underline all of her interests in Art History and she went back to her first love – comics - during the course of her second MA in Cultural Management. This also resulted in her winning an internship at the most prestigious comic festival in Europe – FIBD Angoulême. After several research positions unrelated to street art and graffiti, she returned to street art in her doctoral thesis in 2009. She did more than 50 interviews with graffiti and street artists, gallerists and researchers in Barcelona, London, Berlin, Paris and Stockholm. In addition to her thesis, she has published about a dozen academic articles about graffiti, street art and comics. And now, after all this time she thought it was time to put the spotlight on the Belgrade scene again and dedicate proper academic attention to the new and exciting things happening on its streets. http://www.mustekala.info/node/35776

Srđan Tunić

Srđan Tunić

is an art historian and freelance curator from Belgrade, currently enrolled on the MA programme Cultural Policy and Management (UNESCO chair, University of the Arts, Belgrade).

His affection for street art was cooking for quite some time and in late 2012 he co-founded INFILTRI street art project, platform and web archive with a group of people around the Mediterranean region. The project aimed at documenting street art from Europe, North Africa and the Middle East, with a political and social focus, triggered by the use of street art in the Arab Spring. After a couple of research trips, the project went on hiatus in mid 2014 due to lack of funding and a website hack. One of the members, Caram Kapp, later took part in the Homeland case hactivism. Another Mediterranean project was the multimedia festival DJART’14 , organized by Trans-Cultural Dialogues , that took part in Algiers in November 2014. Taking place in public spaces of the city, activities included: interventions in public space in collaboration with the Algerian street art collective AKAKIR, a stickers lab with Walid Bouchouchi, a group of street artists doing Calligraffiti, and the famous eL Seed who made a mural at Didouche Mourad Bvd. Both of these projects are part of the Cultural Innovators Network . What about Belgrade? Well, in spring 2013, as part of the Kustosiranje / About and Around Curating platform, he participated in organizing an exhibition at Dom Omladine Beograda (Cultural Center of the City of Belgrade). The exhibition, titled „Čekamo vas / We are waiting for you“, made by a collective of authors, tackled the question of society‘s insensitivity by addressing messages of hate in public spaces in Serbia. He also organized the production of Muhamed Kafedžić's mural at elementary school Đorđe Krstić in Belgrade ( The Great Super Mario Wave of Čukarica ). For more about Srđan‘s work, see: https://srdjantunic.wordpress.com/

Srdjan and Ljilja are some of the most knowledgeable and uncomplicated Street Art researchers I can think of. They are the first people I go to when I need in-depth and humorous information about histories and current developments in Serbia and beyond. Their understanding of the artistic processes underlying the manifestation of art on the street and empathy with the communities behind them make any expedition into walls a pleasurable firework of information, art, activism and history.

I highly recommend Srdjan’s services as a street art guide. On my previous tours with him, he has proven knowledgeable not only about the different types and locations of street art, but also about the historical and cultural backgrounds of them. He is also informed on many of the artists who make the street art. I would readily go on another guided tour with him.

Srđan Tunić is a passionate „street walker“ and art critic, with whom this visual city phenomenon could be exciting to see, as well as to find out the city‘s pulse directly and without a „politically correct“ selection. Also, his informal, personal and grounded approach, based on years of research, is a great way to be introduced to Belgrade street art.

I can highly recommend a city/street art tour guided by Ljiljana, she is an excellent observer of underground culture. I myself have discovered many wonderful things in our everyday life with the help of Ljiljana!  You too will surely find something intriguing and the streets will never look the same again.

Definitely the most knowledgeable person about street art I have ever had the pleasure of meeting! Ljiljana gave us a memorable tour of Belgrade during our stay there. She has all the knowledge of the local, but her experience of living abroad also gives her the perspective of a tourist, so she will know the places that will excite you :)

Ljiljana is the Master Yoda of street art. She’s super chill and knows probably everything about the street art. If you are looking for someone who can introduce you into the street art and the city, she’s the ONE. With the art historian background, her story will be a mixture of the historical background of the city and the street art. You will be surprised by all the super cool yet hidden spot she will show you.

I spent a lovely three hours with Srdjan, who is very polite, friendly and knowledgeable. He also speaks impeccable English and is popular - people keep bumping into him and say hi! These walks are a great way to see a side of the city away from the beaten tourist track. Highly recommended.

The perfect way to spend your time - have fun, learn a lot and, most importantly, truly feel the heartbeat of ever-changing Belgrade streets! Ljiljana and Srđan are amazing, passionate guides who really stand out from the crowd.

Belgrade murals, graffiti, and street art

savamala-promenada-mural

You can either love them or hate them, but Belgrade murals are certainly a form of street art. You can find them in pretty much every city around the world. They often have a meaningful expression and carry certain messages. We know that graffiti and murals are not the same, but for convenience, we will use those words interchangeably. Here, we will introduce you to some of them, which have great artistic value, and which became the recognizable symbols of our city.

Powerful messages of Belgrade murals

Serbia and its capital, Belgrade, undoubtedly had a turbulent history. Forms of art, including street art, honor our history, culture, and famous people. Correspondingly, they subtly point out specific social issues or even carry political messages.

This mural (Pop Lukina Street) is by all means self-explanatory. Concrete and gray buildings are literally eating our trees.  Thus, it really forces us to re-think the way we treat the environment we live in.

belgrade-graffiti-mural

As a matter of fact, the artists frequently honor Serbian and international celebrities. They create the mural representing them. One of the most loved ones is dedicated to the most famous Serbian actors and couple, Dragan Nikolić and Milena Dravić. Even though they are sadly no longer with us, their legacy lives. The mural is in Nevesinjska Street, close to the place where they lived.

belgrade-murals-milena-dragan

Then, in Savamala (Karađorđeva Street), an unknown artist gifted us this mural of Robin Williams .

robin-williams-mural

Famous Savamala murals

Savamala, which used to be an industrial zone, is now the hub of creativity and arts. Many artists – local and foreign – contributed to making Savamala what it is today. There are plenty of different street art forms here, and we will use this chance to represent the most significant ones.

La Santa de Beograd

One of the most famous Belgrade murals is “La Santa de Beograd” . Located in the hip quart of Savamala, the Santa is a 20 x 9 meters large mural. The exact street is Karađorđeva 9, but you will have the best view from Branko’s bridge. The mural is the work of Guillaume Alby –   Remed , a French artist. The Saint nurtures the city and shields it with her multiple hands. The golden egg between her feet symbolizes the new life and the eternity of our city.

la-santa-de-beograd

Waiting for the sun

You will find another interesting mural very close to Santa, in Karađorđeva 51. The name is “Waiting for the sun” and the author is Aleksandar Maćašev . It was a part of the Mikser festival performance. The viewer needs to interpret the message. Do we all have different points of view? What do we see in this vibrant and gentrified part of the city? Are our eyes windows to the world? Come and decide!

belgrade-graffiti-savamala

Ghost People of Savamala

The incredibly cute Ghost People of Savamala are popping out at unexpected places in Savamala. The authors are Tijana Tripković and Barbara Dimić . They are adorable, but above all, they carry an important message. With small details, they show the plight of people who are suffering from gentrification and whose homes and workplaces have been affected. While it may be true that Belgrade Waterfront is definitely an ambitious project which reshapes the city, there are some critics. Many locals say that it is “killing” the spirit and traditions of the city and Savamala.

Belgrade murals and graffiti tour

If you want to see the Belgrade murals and graffiti and murals on your own, we advise you to stick to the Savamala district. See them while they are still there! More Than Belgrade team is surely ready to customize one of Belgrade City Tours or make a completely tailor-made Belgrade murals and graffiti tour just for you. Take a look at Belgrade from a completely new angle – from the perspective of a street artist.

Murals and Graffiti Tour

Belgrade, as the capital of Serbia, is also a mirror of the country itself, where different ideas and worldviews about the world and itself are refracted. The most vivid presentation of the diversity of our city can be seen on the street art tour.

Our public art is an aspect of Belgrade’s urban life. Our outdoor art was created spontaneously, emotionally, and quickly (graffiti) and in a complex, thorough and thoughtful way (murals). Both artistic expressions have certainly become an unavoidable part of our everyday life, raising the awareness of passers-by about social, political, climatic, or spiritual needs, or they are there to remind us about “l’art pour l’art” (art for art’s sake).

In order to penetrate into artistic expressions and its social, educational, and engaged value, let’s walk the streets with local guides and listen to the past, present, and future painted on the walls of our city.

Let’s learn about the beginnings of mural painting in the city in the 1980s, from famous Yugoslav professors and painters (like Cedomir Cupic and Vladimir Velickovic) to modern young artists and art collectives (like TKV, Pijanista, Artez, the KURS association, etc.) Through their murals, we will learn what values they wanted to present to us, how difficult it is to paint tall residential buildings or silos, what materials they use in their work, and how they can even reduce air pollution. A large number of details, starting from the old Slavic tradition to the contemporary punk fan scene or feminism, will be explained to you on the most colorful tour in the city.

A Pocket-Sized Insider’s Guide to the Best of New Belgrade

belgrade graffiti tour

The first urban plans that envisioned the expansion of Belgrade to the left bank of the Sava river were made in 1923, but the lack of resources and manpower for drying wetlands postponed the whole process for an indefinite time. In order to meet the needs of a growing population that occurred due to migration and high birth rates, the main goal of the New Belgrade project was from the very start to build as many buildings as soon as possible. The city on the left bank of the Sava river was conceived as a residential but also as an administrative center of the new Yugoslavia, and it was supposed to become, metaphorically, the embodiment of new social relations. Over time, New Belgrade evolved into a completely ‘culture’.

Thus , our pocket-sized guide aims to present some of the ‘culture’ places which New Belgrade is known for.

Museum of Contemporary Art Belgrade (MoCAB)

Unlike other contemporary and modern art museums around the world, MoCAB is in the building designed at the beginning of the 60s, dating back to the time of former SFR Yugoslavia. This unique architectural masterpiece was made for the needs of Yugoslav contemporary art back in the day. It was opened to the public on the 20th of October in 1965. In the same year architects, Ivan Antić and Ivanka Raspopović, won the most prestigious Yugoslav award for architecture, and the building has ever since remained one of the Yugoslav modernist architecture landmarks.

West Gate of Belgrade–  Geneks Tower

The construction of Geneks Tower, the tallest building in Belgrade located right next to the highway, lasted for 10 years. It was designed by architect Mihajlo Mitrović. His most significant building, built using modern building techniques, was symbolically named West Gate of Belgrade (one of the most famous buildings in brutalism  style, Reynor Banham also associated the term with Art Brut and Le Corbusier’s béton brut , meaning raw concrete in French).

The building was functionally and physically divided into two towers, commercial and residential. A circular restaurant was built at the top of the building, but the equipment for the rotation was never installed. The total height of the building is 124 m, the higher tower (intended for housing) has 30 floors and a total of 184 apartments, and the commercial tower (closer to the highway) has 39 floors.

Unfortunately, the commercial tower and the restaurant are today completely out of order. It is unbelievable that this tourist potential (a unique perspective for viewing the city), which would certainly attract both tourists and Belgrade residents themselves, remains empty.

SIV Palace (Palace of Serbia)

The Federal Executive Council (SIV) is one of the three firstly built facilities in New Belgrade, and it was completed in 1962 after several years of work. The construction of the building, in block 13, began by following the winning competition design in classical style by the architect Vladimir Potočnjak and his architectural team from Zagreb. However, the building was completed following the project of the architect Mihajlo Janković in the spirit of the international style of architecture, and today it is considered an important example of Yugoslav post-war architecture.

The building had 956 working rooms, 79 halls and ceremonial rooms, 91 utility rooms, and two garages. Six main halls symbolically represent the six states of the former Yugoslavia, and the interior design was supposed to express the power, size, and stability of the then-new Yugoslavia.

Today, this is an administrative building that hosts several ministries, some governmental bodies, a few institutions, and a lot of administration.

belgrade graffiti tour

Belgrade graffiti and street art scene emerged in the mid-80s. Decision-makers from municipalities and public festivals planned to make the city more creative, colorful, and interesting. Together they commissioned murals from famous local and foreign artists. This initiative led to the popularization of street art in Belgrade. At the same time, Fantastic Boys or RCC (Rap City Crew) popped up as the first Belgrade-based graffiti crew and inspired the work of Miša (later known as Jens), who is now the longest-serving street artist of Belgrade having created his first work back in 1988. At that time, graffiti mostly served to make humorous comments about local culture, with a focus on music bands, sports teams, or some personal love stories. During the 90s Belgrade was struck by culture and economic crisis, which caused the initiative of commissioning murals to stop until the mid-2000.  Then the scene bloomed in Belgrade’s  Blok 45 and the block became an epicenter of Belgrade graffiti. Anonymous Graffiti Crew popped up in 1996, and their leaders were Jens and Cobes. AGC was influenced by early 90s Parisian graffiti artists, and their work was simple lettering and forms in characteristic color silver and a black frame. Using fewer colors made the art affordable and the popularity of this style slowly increased.

CLUBS:

Iconic Belgrade splav (river raft) is located on the banks of the Sava river. It works all year round, regardless of the weather conditions. This is my favorite place to go clubbing, especially in the summer season when the dance madness kicks off on the boat deck. The raft offers a stunning music selection ranging from Detroit techno and soulful to disco, funky, house, and dubstep. 20/44 hosts one of the best clubbing nights in Belgrade, called Disco not Disco featuring local stars DJ Brka, Toshke, Schwabe, and other special guests. During the summer months, the splav offers a wonderful view of the old city and bridge at night, when all the lights are on. In the morning hours, you can catch one of Belgrade’s breathtaking sunrises. Over the winter, parties are held under the deck, where it’s warm and cozy no matter how cold it is outside. The atmosphere is always super sexy:  red lights, a few screens, and lots of smoke. Boat 20/44 hosts the best local DJs and also world-famous stars such as Detroit techno-master Mike Huckaby and trendsetter Peggy Gou. The crowd is friendly and relaxed. The entrance fee is between 4 and 10 euros, and the drinks are quite affordable.
