"We can’t wait to put on a show that the fans will love and deserve."

Neighbours first aired in 1985 and follows the lives of those living and working in the fictional Melbourne suburb of Erinsborough.

Many stars have launched their careers off the back of it, including Kylie Minogue , Jason Donovan, Natalie Imbruglia, Guy Pearce, and Oscar nominated actress Margot Robbie.

Friday marked the final day of filming on the globally-recognised soap, with the final episode due to be broadcast in the UK on Channel 5 on August 1.

The cast posed for one final photo all together on set, with Paul Robinson actor Stefan Dennis describing it as “a melancholy day” .

Executive producer Jason Herbison said: “We all knew this day was coming but until we were here in this moment when the very last scene was filmed, it was hard to express how we would all feel.

Neighbours: The Celebration Tour review – the perfect blend of poignancy and Toadfish jokes

This stage show sees the actors behind Paul Robinson and Toadie argue over who had most marriages, before a genuinely touching thank you to fans – who leave the show’s stars in tears

N eighbours being cancelled, Kylie and Jason Donovan reprising their roles and the soap creating international headlines for its celebratory finale … before being revived by a streaming service just over three months later is, no question, peak Neighbours .

The same can also be said for the tour. A one-off Live in Conversation special had been planned, featuring cast members talking about and sharing their favourite moments, to mark the Australian soap’s 35th anniversary in 2020. Those plans were then shelved because of Covid. Then last year, when the show was cancelled after Channel 5 decided to not renew its contract, Neighbours announced The Farewell Tour. Now, with the soap being picked up by Amazon’s Freevee streaming service , it has changed its name once again to Neighbours: The Celebration Tour.

The excitement in the room beforehand was palpable, the gift shop thronged with fans buying plastic Ramsay Street replica signs. The show itself, mostly consisting of a Q&A, leaned heavily into discussing the more surreal elements of the daytime soap that made it such a firm favourite. “Life on Neighbours for Toadie was about being involved in a bouncy castle accident, being run over, shot …” said the host, Leah Boleto, to the actor who portrayed him, Ryan Moloney, as a montage of those accidents played silently on a screen behind them.

“What?! It could happen!” declared Jackie Woodburne (Susan Kennedy) when questioned about a storyline that involved her slipping on milk, banging her head and thinking she was a teenager. She recounted the time her character had to perform an emergency tracheostomy on Lou after he started choking in the aftermath of a tornado, aided only by a butter knife, a straw and instructions down the phone from her on-screen partner, Dr Karl Kennedy (Alan Fletcher). In case you are wondering, Lou made a full recovery. “All in a day’s work,” said Fletcher.

The audience cheered when shown a clip of Susan slapping Karl after he had admitted to an affair. April Rose Pengilly (Chloe Brennan) talked about how many Simpsons references she managed to slip into her dialogue. And Annie Jones (Plain Jane Superbrain) was introduced with a clip from a storyline where her son had revealed that he was an escort, followed by a portrait of Mrs Mangal falling off the wall and crashing to the ground.

This surrealism continued into the second half. It began with a montage of Neighbours explosions from over the years. Now with the cast sitting together, rather than being interviewed separately, there were lighthearted discussions on topics such as who had the most weddings, with Toadie’s seven (one notably ending with him accidentally driving off a cliff into the sea) beaten by Paul Robinson’s nine; the character, played by Stefan Dennis, has had six wives. It would have been nice if the cast had all sat together from the start of the show.

after newsletter promotion

The event was strongest when the cast spoke frankly about the shock of the soap’s cancellation, the pain they felt saying goodbye to the crew (some of whom left weeks before the final episode even aired), followed by their surprise that it had been saved . Neighbours was reincarnated by Amazon, but that was very much due to the fans, many of whom had been campaigning online for months and many of whom must have been in that audience. While the soap was often silly and surreal, it also contained a natural warmth and inclusiveness that many shows lack. The cast relished the opportunity to thank fans for their support, with several revealing that they had cried during the meet and greets that had taken place that day. It felt like a rare and genuine opportunity to say thank you.

It also ended with a rather touching moment. Directly before goading the entire audience into singing the soap’s theme tune, the cast got up from their seats and stood in a row at the front. Woodburne then reprised Susan’s narration from the soap’s final scene shown last July, when her character walked around Erinsborough making observations on her fellow neighbours. Only this time she shared the lines with her co-stars and added in several extra words. “Together we are … and we will continue to be … the perfect blend,” she said.

Neighbours: The Celebration Tour is at venues across the UK until 23 March, with a performance in Australia on 16 April

Neighbours announces 40th anniversary UK tour

By Matt Sole

neighbours tour uk london

After teasing us last month with news of a new Neighbours event , today it has been confirmed that the cast of Neighbours will be returning to the UK in 2025 to celebrate the show’s 40th anniversary.

Some of your favourite faces from Erinsborough will be taking to the stage in 6 UK cities in February 2025, just ahead of the show’s milestone birthday. Neighbours is the first Australian TV drama to ever reach such an anniversary.

Back by popular demand, following the phenomenal success of The Celebration Tour of 2023, will see 6 dates across the UK including Birmingham, Cardiff, Glasgow, Manchester and at the world-famous London Palladium; home to the best entertainment shows in London.

neighbours tour uk london

The show’s producers, Mapletree Entertainment, have promised a brand-new line up and a brand new reason to celebrate in the tour, which will be hosted once again by Sky News presenter Leah Boleto, herself a life-long fan of the show.

The audience can expect surprises, never before-heard stories, and all the inside scoop on what life is really like in Erinsborough. The night promises to be the ultimate toast to over 9000 episodes of Neighbours which originally debuted in March 1985.

The show was cancelled by its original broadcaster, Channel 7, after just a few months, being picked up by rival network, Channel 10 the following year.

The show once again was axed in 2022 after UK broadcaster, Channel 5, pulled out their financing of the show. Just 4 months after the ‘final’ episode aired, Amazon announced that they were picking the show back up for their Freevee streaming platform and the show returned to production in April 2023. Since the show debuted on Amazon in September 2023 it has consistently been their most-streamed show on Freevee in the UK, but is also available to viewers in South Africa, the USA and Canada on the platform.

Cast of the show are yet to be confirmed, but it is guaranteed to be a night of joy and delight for every Neighbours fan there.

It follows the success of The Celebration Tour of 2023, and will be running across 5 dates in Birmingham, Cardiff, Glasgow, Manchester and at the world-famous London Palladium , home to some of the biggest entertainment shows in London.

Neighbours originally debuted in 1985 and first aired in the UK in 1986 on BBC One. In November 2022, it was announced that Amazon Freevee and Fremantle had agreed to a deal that would restart the series .

However, the fate of the show hangs in the air as it's new home is set to be shut down just months into the new run.

Kylie Minogue, who got her start on the show, said that said she was "baffled" by the news of the soaps return because "everyone went to a lot of effort" for what was initially thought to be the "last-ever" episode.

In 2023 six cast members toured the UK for the sell-out Neighbours – The Celebration Tour.

‘Midnight Butterflies’ will be released on June 14 via their new independent label Alt. Records and is described in a press release as being centred around “melodic joy” and “pop perfection”. It follows 2020’s ‘Open Up Your Head’ and 2022’s ‘Homesick’.

“It feels and sounds like a fledgling band making their energetic untainted debut record. It’s super optimistic and euphoric,” said frontman Henry Camamile of the album.

“There was a huge freedom in making this record. It’s an exciting time for music across genres, and who wouldn’t want to be a part of that?”

The forthcoming album comes after a huge year for Sea Girls in 2023. This included a milestone headline show at Alexandra Palace and a support slot with  Louis Tomlinson  at his gig at London’s O2.

In the latter half of last year they also shared details of an upcoming run of headline shows in the UK and Australia, as part of the ‘Young Strangers’ tour. These include stops in Sydney, Melbourne and Brisbane later this month, followed by eight shows across the UK and Ireland in the Spring.  Visit here for remaining tickets to UK shows .

Neighbours returns on Amazon Freevee

In a new trailer, it’s was revealed that old favourites – not least of all Alan Fletcher and Jackie Woodburne as Karl and Susan Kennedy, and Stefan Dennis as Paul Robinson – are back with a vengeance, as all roads lead to  Ramsay Street .

Straight off, the Kennedys find themselves in a mixture of joy and strife, with Susan having a dilemma that is bringing her strain, but Karl lightening the mood by presenting himself naked, covering his modesty with an impressive-sized box.

Set two years after the finale in 2022, we also see a re-appearance for show legend Harold Bishop (Ian Smith) as he gazes poignantly around his beloved home, while Toadie Rebecchi (Ryan Moloney) doesn’t get the excited reception that he hoped for when he bursts back on the scene.

It’s not just the familiar faces heading back either, a host of new names will be joining the cast.

Ange Postecoglou: Tottenham wrecking Arsenal title hopes is not motivation

Head coach says he will send Spurs out in Sunday’s north London Derby to keep fighting for fourth place not to disrupt rivals’ bid for first

Rodrigo Bentancur

Tottenham head coach Ange Postecoglou has no interest in wrecking Arsenal’s title bid .

Spurs return to action on Sunday after a 15-day lay-off with the Premier League leaders the visitors to N17.

While Tottenham have lost ground in the battle for Champions League qualification over the past fortnight, there is plenty on the line for the Gunners.

Arsenal could open up a four-point gap at the summit with victory, which would also bring about “St Totteringham’s Day” - the moment when Tottenham can no longer catch their rivals in the league table.

But Postecoglou, no stranger to a hotly contested derby after his time with Celtic, insisted stopping Mikel Arteta’s side does not motivate him.

“In terms of that as a motivation, no,” Postecoglou said.

“I understand the importance of winning against your traditional rival. I’ve just come down from Glasgow. I’ve got a fair idea about what derbies mean to supporters.

“I never believe your motivation should revolve around the demise of somebody else. Your motivation should be about yourself.

Postecoglou during an Old Firm game

“I want to win because I want us to achieve something. I want us to progress. I want us to be in a position fighting for the title. That’s what drives me, not the demise.

“If that’s your kind of measure, always peering over the back fence to see what your neighbour’s building, you could both have the worst houses in the street because everyone else is building beautiful places and you’re looking over the back fence.

“I never wanted to win those games because it meant Rangers would lose. I wanted to win because I wanted us to win the title.”

Postecoglou has repeatedly stated his desire for Tottenham to be in the mix for major honours this time next year.

Spurs will have a big say in the title race with Manchester City set to visit on May 14, but a fifth-placed finish now appears most likely given Aston Villa’s recent resurgence.

While Postecoglou scoffed at a suggestion he would have taken that at the start of the campaign, when Harry Kane was sold a day before their opener, he did credit his young group for tackling that challenge head-on.

“I was literally sitting in here the day before the Brentford game and he’d just left. So, you’re starting a season and the most significant person at this football club, maybe ever, has just left on the eve of the first game,” Postecoglou reflected.

“I remember making a real conscious effort of looking really graceful above the water and if there was any panicking happening, making sure it was under the water so that nobody could see, particularly the players.

“And again, the players never batted an eyelid – which they could have, especially when you look at what Harry has done this year. It has been unbelievable.

“And yet he hasn’t been mentioned as much as he would have been had we not been scoring goals.

“That’s credit to the group, the playing group that they have embraced that challenge.

“I think these things we have been through this year will help us in the medium or long-term.

“Even the disrupted season, because it kind of removes any excuse we have for next year. We are not going to lose another Harry Kane next year. We are not going to have a disrupted season.

“We know we’ve still got some work to do. At the same time, we’re in a better position than we were 12 months ago to build on that.

“That has to be our aim, that in 12 months’ time we’re in a position where we are one of the contenders rather than trying to disrupt them.”

Still from Spirited Away play

The 10 best new London theatre openings in May

Tom Holland, Punchdrunk, ‘Spirited Away’ and more – it’s an incredible month on the London stage

Andrzej Lukowski

If you’re looking for the definition of an embarrassment of riches, May 2024 in the London theatre calendar really does go above and beyond what could reasonably be expected of a single city to stage in a single month.

Tom Holland makes his stage comeback in Jamie Lloyd’s ‘Romeo & Juliet’, the blockbuster Tokyo adaptation of Studio Ghibli’s ‘Spirited Away’ rolls into the West End for the summer, immersive theatre gods Punchdrunk return and Denise Gough reprises her titanic stage performance in ‘People, Places and Things’. And there’s plenty more besides, with a handful of exciting international productions and a new James Graham play.

Romeo & Juliet, 2024

1.  Romeo & Juliet

Jamie Lloyd is a director at the absolute peak of his game after last year’s visionary ‘Sunset Boulevard’; Tom Holland is an actor at the absolute peak of his fame after his blockbuster MCU Spider-Man films. This team up for a revival of Shakespeare’s timeless romantic tragedy has a hell of a lot of expectations to live up to, and Holland has an awful lot to prove, having not acted on stage since he was a child. But get this right and it could be the show of the year. That his co-star Francesca Amewudah-Rivers has been subject to racist internet trolling is deeply upsetting but should have no bearing on the production itself.

Duke of York’s Theatre, May 11-Aug 3 .

Viola's Room, Punchdrunk, 2024

2.  Viola’s Room

Returning scarcely six months after their last show ‘The Burnt City’ closed, there’s something just intrinsically heartening about the idea that immersive theatre legends Punchdrunk don’t need to disappear for a decade between works. ‘Viola’s Room’ is a stripped down, audio-driven, linear piece with narration from Helena Bonham-Carter, a dark fairytale that promises to offer an alternative to the company’s enormo-shows of yore, while remaining true to their unsettling spirit.

The Carriageworks, May 14-Aug 18 .

Spirited Away, Tokyo, 2022

3.  Spirited Away

After two blockbuster seasons of the RSC’s ‘My Neighbour Totoro’, it feels almost like we’re being spoiled to get the UK transfer of this by-all-accounts spectacular stage adaptation of another, even more fantastical Studio Ghibli film, 2000’s ‘Spirited Away’. Powered by puppets from Toby Olie that we can tell are spectacular from the pix alone, it got great notices in Tokyo and looks set to be the large-scale hit of the summer.

London Coliseum, Until Aug 24 .

People, Places and Things, National Theatre, 2015

4.  People, Places and Things

There were two stage performances in ’10s British theatre that stood head and shoulders above the others: Mark Rylance in Jez Butterworth’s ‘Jerusalem’, and Denise Gough in Duncan Macmillan’s ‘People, Places and Things’. Rylance finally reprised his epic turn a couple of summers ago. And now Gough will go back to the role of Emma, a drugs and booze addled actress with an extremely complicated relationship with her mother who attempts – with extreme cynicism – to sort her life out. Probably your last chance to catch one of the great performances of our time, as Gough has said she doesn’t feel it makes sense to significantly age the character up.

Trafalgar Theatre, May 3-Aug 10. Buy tickets here .

Bluets, Royal Court, 2024

5.  Bluets

New Royal Court artistic director David Byrne really announces his arrival this month, with his first three shows opening at the venerable West London new-writing powerhouse. The two upstairs – ‘Dugsi Dayz’ and ‘Lie Low’ – look intriguing, but all attention is clearly in the first show to run in the Byrne-era main house. ‘Bluet’ sees the visionary director Katie Mitchell adapt Maggie Nelson’s poetic meditation on the colour blue, with a top-notch cast that includes Ben Whishaw.

Royal Court Theatre, May 17-Jun 29. Buy tickets here .

Boys from the Blackstuff, National Theatre, 2024

6.  Boys from the Blackstuff

Unstoppable hit machine (and the country’s numero uno political playwright) James Graham has been on a hot streak for the best part of a decade now, and it’s set to continue with the London transfer of this already acclaimed adaptation of Alan Bleasdale’s landmark ’80s TV show about men on the dole in the Thatcher era. A hit at the Liverpool Royal Court last year, it plays a short stint at the National before heading straight to the West End.

National Theatre, May 22-Jun 8. Garrick Theatre, Jun 13-Aug 3. Buy tickets here .

Passing Strange, Young Vic, 2024

7.  Passing Strange

This unusual rock autobiographical rock musical from American musician Stew was a walloping hit on Broadway almost two decades ago now – Spike Lee even made a film of it – but is only just now making its debut in the UK. The brilliant Giles Terara stars in this free-flowing odyssey that details Stew’s formative experiences as a young Black man in America and Europe during the punk years.

Young Vic, May 14-Jul 6. Buy tickets here .

Mary Said What She Said, Barbican, 2024

8.  Mary Said What She Said

Legendary American avant-garde director Robert Wilson rolls into town for one week only with this monologue adapted from the letters of the jailed Mary Queen of Scots. It’s by Isabelle Huppert – arguably France’s greatest actress, it’s the first chance she’s done a show in London in an age (she was last due to perform here in 2020, in a production of ‘The Glass Menagerie’ that was scrapped by the pandemic).

Barbican Centre, May 10-12 .

Pieces of a Woman, TR Warszawa, 2024

9.  Pieces of a Woman

More great European theatre this month as the wonderful Polish company TR Warszawa arrive at Battersea Arts Centre for two midweek performances only with their original production of Kata Wéber’s powerful domestic drama ‘Pieces of a Woman’. It subsequently became famous as an Oscar-nominated film starring Vanessa Kirby, but this is UK audiences’ first chance to see the landmark original play.

Battersea Arts Centre, May 22 and 23 .

Richard III, Shakespeare’s Globe, 2024

10.  Richard III

Michelle Terry stars as Shakespeare’s most malevolent monarch in a production of ‘Richard III’ that has been overshadowed by a backlash from elements of the disabled community who feel an able-bodied actor should not be allowed to play a role typically viewed as disabled. It’s an extremely complicated issue: Adjoa Andoh played the same role to zero controversy last year, and Terry has explicitly stated she won’t be playing Richard as disabled. Perhaps the times are simply changing – hopefully the production itself will offer a sense of clarity that has been missing from some of the discourse around it. Certainly there’s no denying that Globe boss Terry is a tremendous actor.

Concerns are rising that passive, index-tracking funds may be completely absent from the UK’s upcoming “green” fund regime.

Under the Financial Conduct Authority’s new Sustainability Disclosure Requirements, due to come into force at the end of July, funds that are marketed as sustainable “should do as they claim and have the evidence to back it up”.

But the SDR rules may make it very difficult for any passive funds to comply.

The Financial Times already reported in February that no exchange traded funds will be able to have a “sustainable” label as they are only available to UK-domiciled funds, while all ETFs available in the UK — even those listed on the London stock exchange — are domiciled overseas.

Now it seems even passive mutual funds may be struggling to meet the bar the UK regulator has set in order to tackle claims of fund industry “greenwashing”.

Issuers of passive funds will probably only be able to claim one of the FCA’s four green labels: Sustainability Improvers, designed for “products investing in assets that may not be sustainable now, with an aim to improve their sustainability for people and/or planet over time, including in response to the stewardship influence of the firm”.

This label is designed to be broadly analogous to the “transition” funds category in the EU’s Sustainable Finance Disclosure Regulation, specifically those funds that meet the toughest Article 9 criteria.

Under the SFDR disclosure regime, funds can claim to be transitioning if the companies in their portfolio are, in aggregate, decarbonising at a sufficient pace as to be compatible with the 2015 Paris Climate Accords.

But the FCA has decided to go one step further and apply the filter at the level of individual holdings, rather than the broad portfolio, with at least 70 per cent of holdings needing to be improving their sustainability. The remainder must not be in “conflict” with the sustainability objective.

The FCA said in its SDR policy statement that its approach “puts greater emphasis on the firm’s asset selection process. Firms must select assets on the basis of evidence that they have the potential to improve in time”.

This emphasis on selection may prove difficult for passive funds, which do not actively choose their holdings, but include every stock or bond in an index.

“My fear is that in the UK the improvers label is not going to be used by many funds because it’s very difficult to do,” said Hortense Bioy, global director of sustainability research at Morningstar.

“All the passive funds would fail [the test]. For the active ones it’s more feasible,” she added. “There is also the question of when [holdings] have improved, what are you going to do with these companies? It may become a non-label.”

Tom Gosling, an executive fellow at London Business School, agreed the FCA had set tight parameters, particularly for passive funds, but was supportive of this.

“The FCA have intentionally tried to set a high bar and I think they have got it right,” he said, welcoming the prospect of fund managers having to step up their engagement activities in order to qualify for a sustainable label.

“There are an awful lot of stocks you have to show you have an engagement with to qualify for the improvers label,” Gosling said, particularly for highly diversified broad-market passive funds.

If a fund “is only engaging with 10 per cent of the stocks in what way is it sensible to argue that it is having an impact on anything?” he asked.

Gosling said the driver for both SFDR and SDR was that there are funds “that are claiming [climate] impact that are not delivering impact”.

He was critical of the EU’s approach of measuring decarbonisation at the portfolio level, believing this failed to deliver the real world impact some might claim.

“That does not relate to impact or getting the world any nearer to net zero,” he argued.” All [funds] do is tilt away from heavy emitting sectors but it doesn’t change what is happening at all.

“It’s like someone saying they are sending less waste to landfill when they are throwing their rubbish bags into a neighbour’s garden instead. There is no plausible mechanism in which [these funds] do anything [except] make people feel better.”

Bioy believed it was a “philosophical” argument as to which approach was better, but noted that the UK appeared to be saying the $100bn of EU funds tracking Paris-aligned or climate-transition benchmarks “are not legitimate transition strategies”.

However, even if one believed the UK’s approach was superior, Bioy believed it was impractical for asset managers to use.

“If you think that setting criteria at the asset level is more robust than at the portfolio level, if you end up with something that is not used, you may ask yourself if it’s the right thing to do,” she said.

The FCA said in a statement that “the qualifying criteria for labels has been designed to accommodate products investing in different asset classes and those with different investment strategies. This includes both active and passive strategies, and may therefore include products tracking a Paris-aligned or climate transition benchmark, provided that they meet the criteria.”

Several large passive fund managers declined to comment.

The EU is now consulting on possible changes to SFDR and Gosling “on the cards” that it would take steps to bring it in line with the UK’s approach.

“I think the FCA’s legislation gets closer to communicating what is happening [in terms of impact],” he said. “The FCA learnt from what happened in the EU and it explicitly tried to be different.”
