Bayano Caves & Bayano River Tour In Panama

Panama City is a bustling urban jungle with some crazy traffic. However, just a 2-hr drive from the city of Bayano is one of the gems of Panama. We crossed Bayano Lake and explored the Bayano caves, canyons, and the river. Along the way, we saw crocodiles, bats, howler monkeys, and some of the most amazing scenery of my entire Panama journey.

WHERE ARE THE BAYANO CAVES

Bayano Lake and the Bayano Caves are a two-hour drive from Panama City. The local community is called Akua Yala and is where you will drive from Panama City before jumping in a boat to cross Bayano Lake.

We rented a van for our crew of ten people and the journey was along highways and paved roads the whole way in a relatively easy drive. The map below pinpoints Bayano Lake.

Table of Contents

HOW TO VISIT THE BAYANO CAVES

The Bayano Caves are close to Panama City but not incredibly easy to visit. This is because you need to cross Bayano Lake and you need a guide and a boat to do so. The boat and guide cost $180 for the entire day including several tour guides for the caves, the lake, and the river.

Considering this amount of $180 most people go as a group of ten or more to split the costs. $180 is the local price and you may be quoted an inflated price from tour companies such as $100 per person including transport from Panama City. We rented our own private van and paid the $180. In total, our cost for the day was $40 per person with our group of 9 people. This is a very DIY to do but if you go with a tour company you are looking at $120-$150 for this experience PER PERSON!

Our day was organized by Jerry Moreno, who organized the trip for our group of friends. You are welcome to contact Jerry to organize a future trip. The prices may be higher when he organizes future trips as on this trip he organized it for his friends at a cost price. That is the transparent pricing but going with someone local like Jerry is the best way to experience pretty much anywhere in Panama.

CONTACT JERRY THE LOCAL GUIDE (MY BEST FRIEND IN PANAMA)

If you need a local guide or are looking for tips to travel through Panama I suggest contacting, Jerry,  one of my best friends from Panama.  He runs group tours to off-the-beaten-path locations like Escudo de Veraguas and Bayano Caves. He is a local, indigenous guide who is incredibly funny, honest, and knows Panama by the back of his hand. We explored all of Cocle together and went on some insane adventures and he became like a brother to me. If you have any questions or want help, tours, guides, or tips he is your man.

BAYANO LAKE

When we arrived in Bayano, we parked the car and walked down to the lake. Here all nine of us huddled into a local wooden boat. Our three tour guides, young lads, jumped in and off we set for a 30-minute trip across Bayano Lake.

The lake was actually created thanks to the Bayano River after a hydroelectric plant was constructed to provide electricity for Panama City.  Bayano Lake is home to thousands of birds and many other animal species.

The stillness of the lake means that the water reflects perfectly, making for an idyllic trip to the Bayano Caves.

THE BAYANO CAVES ADVENTURE

I’ve been on many ‘cave experiences’ around the world and they are hit and miss. Sometimes you are in a musty cave in the dark with bats flying overhead and dropping poop on you and sometimes it’s pure magic. Bayano Caves is one of the best caving experiences I’ve ever had!

After crossing Bayano Lake in the boat, we gathered our cameras and items we would take into the caves and put them in dry bags. We were going swimming through some sections and walking through others so a dry bag was essential.

The entire experience through the canyons and caves takes about 3 hours depending on how quickly you move through. We took our time, took many photos, and chilled at the end watering hole for half an hour. That was another perk of our private tour, there were no time limits.

The limestone caves formed centuries ago thanks to an underground river, which is still flowing strongly today. The limestone eroded and created the caves and canyons we have today.

The path is such an adventure! Often you are completely inside a cave in pitch black and other times the cave opens up and you are walking through a narrow slot canyon. At times you will need to swim in deep water while most of the time you are clambering over rocks.

My favorite parts were when the caves opened up into the canyon. Vines covered the walls and draped down the sides of the canyon, while light burst through the openings. These areas are also the best spots to take photos as you have much more light to work with. Inside the caves is tough for photos but if you have a strong spotlight you can still get some awesome shots, which really show the remarkable limestone formations.

At the end of the caves and canyons is a beautiful watering hole where you can warm up again and hang out in the sun before heading back out the same way you came in. There is a small cliff jump into shallow water.

After heading back through the caves I thought the adventuring was over. But we actually had much more to go. We jumped back into the boat and headed down a river looking for wildlife. We saw a Capybara go running into the water, swim across the river and scurry up the bank on the other side. After that, a small crocodile slowly cruised past our boat. Lots of different birds passed by our boat but to top it all off, a group of howler monkeys started being incredibly noisy as we headed back out towards the lake.

This really is an untouched area and the tour guides are doing a great job to give tourists a close-up look at nature without impacting the homes of these native creatures. We felt like we were on a safari and saw everything very close right from the boat.

Other animals to look out for are Tucans, Three-toed sloths, Iguanas, snakes, and the Ringed Kingfisher.

ADVENTURE BAG FROM BAYANO CAVES

(This bag was from outside of the caves. There was no trash inside the caves, which is great.) This is an adventure bag. It is full of trash. Every time I go on an adventure I collect one adventure bag full of trash. It’s my small way of saying thanks to mother nature for allowing me to enjoy her beautiful creations. If we have time to go on an adventure we have time to collect an adventure bag on the way back out of the trail once we have enjoyed the waterfall, the hike or the beach. Adventure hard!

Tag your #ADVENTUREBAG on Instagram and mention @adventurebag in your Instagram stories to be featured and inspire your friends, family, and followers to join the movement!

Bayano Lake is a jewel of Panama, with a spectacular environment that is home to hundreds of birds and other animal species, some of them very rare. Chief among its many splendors, is found in the caves of Lake Bayano in Panama.

The caves were formed over many centuries by an underground river that still flows today, the erosion of limestone, and a combination of several factors as wind and floods. The path inside the cave lasts about four hours, with mostly easy parts. However some parts are moderately difficult, requiring more physical effort. The terrain includes river crossings, large rocks, slippery ground etc.

There are areas where light penetrates to areas where we need to use lamps. There will be deep waters within the caves, so the swimming is necessary.

Inside you will see water drops from the ceiling giving the appearance of waterfalls, different rock formations and a diverse fauna.

This tour requires physically healthy and adventurous spirit, invites nature lovers or those wishing to relax from stress and city noise. From early morning the tour starts from the capital to the Lake Bayano important natural resource of Panama.

Upon reaching the caves, ready to start this beautiful and impressive route over a canyon full of passages and huge caverns where you will find a variety of small animals that inhabit this ecosystem without sunlight; crystalline lagoons; huge limestone rock formations, formed through the centuries until it ended in a lagoon where you can enjoy a refreshing swim in small crystalline waters. This route has an area of about one kilometer.

Different birds species can be watched: Neotropic Cormorant, Great Blue Heron, Green Heron, Great Egret, Black Vulture, Osprey, Broad-winged Hawk, Ringed Kingfisher, Tucans, Great Kiskadee, Crested Caracara; Mammals as Mantled Howler Monkey, Neotropical River Otter, Three-toed Sloth, Norther Tamandua, Short-tailed Fruit Bat; Reptiles like: Green Iguana, Brown Vine Snake, Tiger Ratsnake, Fer-de-Lance, variety of amphibians and butterflies.

Live a unique and unforgettable experience in the heart of the tropical forest of the Maje mountain range. Bayano Lake is located in the eastern part of the province of Panama, created when the Bayano River was dammed in 1976. In terms of size, Lake Bayano is the second largest lake in Panama, only surpassed by Gatun lake.

The lake and river are named for the rebel Bayano, leader of Panama’s largest slave revolt of the 16th century.

Before reaching the main caves, crossing Lake Bayano, we will arrive at a cave called Guhamra. We will also make a visit to the Cañon del Tigre. On the way to this point we will observe a large number of birds, some reptiles and howler monkeys, and in some cases capybaras.

Inside the caves we will be covered in water most of the time. Bats will fly close to us, fish will swim between our feet, and we will appreciate specific plants of this ecosystem. The caves are spectacular, we will observe parts of the caves with light that create incredible views and others totally closed where we can see water falling from the ceiling of the caves.

Before returning to the starting point of the caves, we will finish the tour in a beautiful natural pool where you can swim, cool off and enjoy jumping from the rocks that surround it. On the way back, we will have a delicious Panamanian lunch.

Lake Bayano, Panama Boat Tour Description

On the edge of the Darien Gap  in the furthest corner of majestic Lago Bayano there is a hole in the earth, and those brave enough to explore are rewarded with  an amazing experience .

The adventure starts  as we hike deep into and through the wet, but spacious, caves as we make our way through the caverns and pools. Water cascades from the ground above into the Jurassic underworld. As we near the end of the cave light creeps in from crevasses above and eventually we are hiking through narrow canyons.  A natural rain forest swimming hole  greets us on the other side. After the hike we enjoy a locally prepared lunch before heading back to Panama City.

This is adventure tourism at its best . Our boat drivers and guides come from the local village and we contribute funds to the community, which they use to maintain and protect the unspoiled natural environment.

What you need to know / bring :

  • Good Hiking Shoes
  • Dry Change of Clothes
  • Your Passport
  • Bottled Water

Shoes : Shoes or  sandals with straps  (the caves are wet and the rocks can be slippery, please choose footwear appropriately!) The Pedal Project

Exploring the bayano lake caves in the dense panama jungle.

panama-jungle-hike-bayano-lake-caves

Panama’s jungle is an unforgiving place. Home of exotic animals, dangerous rebels, indigenous tribes and the Darién Gap, this is one of the least visited areas on the planet. And there are plenty of tales of people who braved it and were never heard from again.

While Costa Rica conjures up images of sloths and monkeys and cloud forests, Panama feels a little more shrouded in mystery. Most of the country is covered in a thick jungle, with small villages and cities popping up here and there. The southern part refuses to be tamed, though. It’s known less for touristy-jaunts and more notorious for adventures of the lawless variety – you know, like robbery, kidnappings and misfortunate run-ins with the cartel or anti-government rebels.

Panama-jungle-Darien-gap

It’s a wild place, for sure. But not because we humans haven’t tried to tame it. Much the opposite. When Panama belonged to Colombia, the Darién Gap separated the country, creating different cultures on either side. Then, when the Pan-American Highway was being built in 1971 (which, by the way, is the very bicycle touring route that inspired the beginning of The Pedal Project ) nothing would stand in the way of man’s dream to connect all of North America to all of South America. Except for environmentalist and the Darién Gap – right where the Panama jungle connects to Colombia – that is.

Needless to say, I didn’t think that heading into the jungle was one of the things I’d do in Panama. But when I heard about the amazing caves that could be found there, I was instantly game. And, well, we’re here for adventure, right?

On that Note: One Tip When Exploring the Jungle

Panama-jungle-tours-lake

Best not do it alone, ok?

I collaborated with the team at Bayano Adventure to put together this post and share my cave adventures in the Panama jungle with you. They put together Panama tours that are based on getting people off the beaten path and supporting the local people that live in the places we visit. The entire team grew up here in Panama themselves, and their love for their country is clear in everything they do.

Plus, even though we weren’t going to be going near the trouble in the Darién Gap, I wouldn’t recommend that anyone try this adventure by themselves.  The trusted guides at Bayano Adventure know the area, can keep an eye on signs of flash flooding and have the safety materials needed. Which meant we’d be in safe hands while exploring the adjacent swatches of the Panamanian jungle.

Even still, this is definitely not one of the Panama tours that my mother would join me on. Which is kind of how I rate my adventures. On a scale of mom-approved to, “hell nah, I can’t believe I did that.”

This one falls somewhere in the middle.

A Journey to Bayano Lake

Bayano-Lake-Panama-Tours

While we were heading into Panama’s jungle in search of some great slot canyons and caves, we first needed to get to Bayano Lake, about a 2-hour drive on winding roads from where the Pan-American Highway comes to an abrupt stop.

It’s the second-largest manmade lake in Panama and covers 136 square miles (or 353 km²). Technically, it’s the second-largest lake in all of Panama, since there are no natural lakes in the country. The first being Gatún Lake – the one that ships use to get into the Panama Canal.

I didn’t read much before the trip. But I did know that we’d be, “getting wet from the neck down.”

I was advised to bring hiking shoes (I wore tennis shoes), a swimsuit, dry clothes, passport, bug spray, and drinking water. I’d also add to that a dry bag, a plastic bag for your phone, sunscreen, sunglasses, and pants. I wore shorts, but the water is quite cold.

I joined my fellow adventure seekers at our meeting point in Panama City. Even though I was the only non-native English speaker, they still set me up with a great bilingual guide. And Edgar made sure I never missed a thing. We easily passed the time in the car chatting about traveling, nature and different cultures, with Edgar telling me about all of the amazing things to do in Panama. We spent about 2 hours driving on a well-paved highway that cut neatly through the Panama jungle. Then, we pulled onto a dirt road and stopped at a small private farm.

Panama-tours-Bayano-Adventure

That was my first glimpse of Bayano Lake, blue as can be with no end in sight. We got out to stretch our legs, grab headlamps, helmets, and lifejackets. After gearing up, we bumped down the road a bit further to a small inlet on the lake, where our chariots awaited. The ‘chariots’ were two wooden dugout canoes, retro-fitted with Yamaha motors.

I made a mental note to tightened my lifejacket before hopping in for a 45-minute ride across the lake.

Birds, monkeys, and other things to see in Panama’s jungles & forests

Bayano-Lake-Panama

There was nothing but the hum of the motor and the occasional bird squawking in the distance. I quickly slipped into the serenity of Panama’s jungle, Bayano Lake and the wildlife that surrounded us. The forest-turned-lake was still home to monkeys and birds. They set up homes at the top of the branches or swung from the trees in the mangrove forests and jungles that flanked Bayano Lake. As we cruised along, the boat sent ripples across the water, gently hitting the trunks of trees that poked out through the surface of the lake. And that queued anyone who was home to take off flying overheard.

There wasn’t a house or soul in sight – a big difference from the madhouse that was Cartagena earlier this month and, heck, even Panama City. Honking horns were replaced with the occasional angry screech of a howler monkey, letting their presence be known. I’d been craving an adventure just like this for a while.

The Great Sloth Rescue Mission of 2019

Panama-tours-Bayano-adventure

We saw pelicans fishing for lunch, fish jumping across the water, an otter splashing in our wake – and even a sloth floating along in Bayano Lake! But that poor little dude definitely wasn’t out for a Sunday swim. He was more than a little frazzled.

Read: sloths are not exactly aquatic animals.

We decided to give the guy a lift to dry land. We carefully pulled the boat up next to him, shut off the motor and let him float to us. We  were careful to not touch him and used a stick as a sort of a rescue buoy. He gratefully grabbed on to that, and then the side of the boat, where he latched on with all four limbs and cruised with us to the shore. Once we got over to one of the many islands in Bayano Lake, he used the same stick to crawl from the boat to safety.

Side mission accomplished. We said goodbye to our little hitchhiker and continued on to find the Bayano Lake caves we originally set out to find.

Trekking Through Panama’s Jungle Caves

Panama-things-to-do

We docked the boats in a marshy valley. We were facing the forest, with distant mountains rising up behind this piec e of the Panama jungle. After squish-squishing our way along a muddy riverbank we came to a small hut. And there it was. Just behind the hut was a small, worn sign. The casual hiker would easily walk right by. Not that hikers ever made it this far into Panama’s jungle. But, it said that we had, in fact, arrived.

“Welcome to the Bayano Lake Caves”

We had a bit of safety de-briefing on how to forge through the river and stay safe in the caves. Then, we hiked down the path and hopped into the water. After just a couple of yards, I lost visibility of my feet. Soon, I realized we only had few slivers of sunlight from the slot canyon above to navigate by. They created sunbeams in the caves and the reflection danced off the cave walls all around us.

And then the lights went out.

Panama-jungle-things-to-do-in-Panama

Well, sort of. The slot canyons closed off, the water levels rose and Panama’s jungle was above us. We all got in a group to turn off our headlights and see just how dark pitch blackness was. I don’t know if I’ve ever been in that much darkness, completely forgetting that it was actually only about noon in the world overhead. So, as it turns out, one of my favorite things to see in Panama was, well, nothing at all.

We were in a different realm now.

Our guide had us turn on lights back on and warned us that there would be some waterfalls and bats up ahead. And that the river we were standing in might be up to neck-high. No joke.

But Edgar and the other guide kept an eye on the water levels (which can turn into a potentially dangerous situation in slot canyons). And they made sure everyone safely made their way through the caverns. Which meant all I had to worry about was keeping one eye on what might be in the dark waters, and the other on the bats that were swirling overhead. I may or may not have put my backpack over my head at one time. You know, juuuuuust to ensure no one would get any ideas about landing on my head.

Do bats do that? I don’t know.

Exploring the World Under Our Feet

Bayano-Lake-caves-Panama

To say that trekking through the Bayano Lake caves is one of the more adventurous things to do in Panama feels like an understatement. Want to see a different side of the country? This is it. It’s like seeing a whole new place.

I followed a river through slot canyons and caves. I stood under underground waterfalls. I dodged bats and I even unknowingly walked by two sleeping caimans (which to my untrained eye, look a lot like hungry alligators). You know, until someone pointed it out. I looked down and noticed that I was standing in the same pool as one of them. That was a whole lot closer to nature than I wanted to be at that moment.

A Post-Exploration Meal

Bayano-caves-Panama-jungle-things-to-do

By the time we had emerged from the caves, I almost forgot it was only mid-day. It took my eyes some time to acclimate to the sunlight. I quit squinting by the time we returned to the hut where we began. There, the indigenous women prepared a traditional local meal of fish and patacones. Patacones are a very popular side dish in Latin America. They are smashed fried green plantains. Tastier than it sounds.

I think I fell asleep mid-sentence at some point on our way back to Panama City. I was that pooped. And maybe I dreamt that I was one of the original explorers in Central American, hiking up rivers and bushwacking my way through Panama’s jungle, trying to make it the 50 miles from the Pacific over to the Atlantic, meeting the kind indigenous people that were there, living off the land.

Or maybe I was too tired from the day’s adventures in the Panama jungle and at Bayano Lake to dream anything.

But it was one of the Panama tours that I won’t be forgetting any time soon.

And if you wanna trek into the untamed Panama jungle yourself, Antonio at Bayano Adventures (check out their photos on Facebook ) will definitely make sure you have a safe trip. This is definitely one of the unique things to do in Panama City that you should add to your list. You’ll see untouched parts of nature, support local families and get to practice your Spanish!
