Association of Pickleball Professionals Announces 2023 Tour Schedule

Twenty Tour stops, four Majors, two Championships highlight 2023 campaign, which begins January 11

CHICAGO – The Association of Pickleball Professionals (APP) announced its 2023 Tour schedule today, revealing the first of many major enhancements to its annual calendar. Twenty tour stops comprise the schedule, highlighted by four Major tournaments and two Championship events – the Spring Championships in New York City and the Fall Championships in Mesa, Ariz.

Two Major tournaments will take place prior to each of the Spring and Fall Championships, respectively. The Spring Majors will take place in Daytona Beach, Fla., and Southern California ahead of the Spring Championships in New York City, while the Fall Majors will be held in Chicago and Dallas leading up to the Fall Championships in Mesa, Ariz.

Throughout the 20 tournaments currently scheduled, the 2023 APP Tour will offer opportunities for open pros, senior pros, super senior pros and amateurs.

In a historic first, the APP Tour will compete in Canada from June 21-25, continuing to extend the organization and sport’s visibility and presence in markets across the globe.

“We are thrilled to announce the North American schedule for the APP’s fourth season,” said Ken Herrmann, founder of the APP. “It’s hard to believe the growth and passion for pickleball around the country and world, and we are incredibly proud to be delivering another robust tournament schedule for our professionals and competitive amateurs.

“The 2023 schedule again includes historic venues and terrific markets. We also are excited to see our professionals compete in our new format and structure with four Majors and two Championships up for grabs.”

Future schedules for the APP Next Gen Series, International Series, and Collegiate Series, along with tournament prize pools, will be announced in the coming weeks. Additional information on USA Pickleball National Championship Series and Golden Ticket events will be announced soon.

The APP Tour Features Pickleball Road Warriors

The APP Tour is a non-stop pickleball machine. In the last two weeks alone, the APP Tour traveled from Philadelphia to Chicago (and even had a stop in Spain the same weekend as its Chicago Open). The APP Tour is now on the road to Atlanta for its 18 th tour stop of 2022 in the United States (with 7 more stops in the U.S. alone throughout the remainder of the calendar year).

If you like to play pickleball and want to compete week-in and week-out, the APP Tour will certainly give you plenty of opportunities. And, there are a ton of pro pickleball players along for the ride. In fact, a handful of pros and senior pros have already played in over 100 brackets this 2022 calendar year! Shoutout to these pro pickleball players and senior pro pickleball players who are absolute road warriors!

The APP Tour Features Pickleball Road Warriors | Pickler Pickleball

Let’s breakdown the last two APP tour stops…

DJ Young and Vivienne David Shine at the APP Philadelphia Open

Both DJ Young and Vivienne David—both Dreamland residents, practice partners, and CRBN-wielding players—shined at the APP Philadelphia Open, winning gold together in mixed doubles and then again in their respective gender doubles events. Young won gold in men’s doubles with Mario Barrientos, while Vivienne David took home gold in women’s doubles with Lauren Stratman (which was the second gold in a row for this duo).

The APP Tour Features Pickleball Road Warriors | Pickler Pickleball

Other standouts from the APP Philadelphia Open include:

  • Pablo Tellez snagged three medals—one in each event he played in. Tellez took home silver in men’s singles, silver in men’s doubles (with Brendon Long), and bronze in mixed doubles (with Milan Rane).
  • Speaking of Milan Rane, she grabbed two medals herself. One bronze in mixed doubles and one silver in women’s doubles with partner Jorja Johnson, who grabbed two medals, too, with her women’s singles championship. Megan Fudge also matched Rane and Johnson with two medals of her own—a bronze in women’s doubles with Olivia McMillan and a silver in women’s singles.
  • Andrei Daescu scooped up two medals at the APP Philadelphia Open – a bronze medal in men’s doubles with Eden Lica, and a silver medal in mixed doubles with a “pick-up” partner in Andrea Koop (who filled in for her sister, Maggie Remynse, who had to back out last minute). Not too bad for a late pick-up…
  • Federico Staksrud climbed back on top of the men’s singles podium. Staying with singles, John Cincola claimed bronze in men’s singles, and Alix Truong had a strong showing, claiming bronze on the women’s singles side.
  • Last, but certainly not least, Julie Johnson was the standout in the senior pro brackets, as she took home the coveted triple crown (winning gold in senior mixed doubles, senior women’s doubles, and senior women’s singles).

The APP Chicago Open Features Lots of “If Necessary” Games

The APP Chicago Open featured a “Championship Sunday,” with all championship matches being played on Sunday, and a good crowd came out to support. The pro pickleball players put on a show for the in-person crowd, too, as a majority of the matches (4 out of the 5 championship matches) in the APP Tour’s double-elimination format went to the “if necessary” game to 15. The big winners on the weekend were:

  • Federico Staksrud defended his APP Philadelphia Open men’s singles gold with another gold in Chicago. Staksrud held off JW Johnson in the “if necessary” game to 15, leaving Johnson to have to settle for silver.

The APP Tour Features Pickleball Road Warriors | Pickler Pickleball

  • Salome Devidze snagged the women’s singles gold, defeating Anna Bright. Both Bright and JW Johnson were on the hunt for a triple crown, but were stopped in their quest early in the day.
  • Similar to Bright and Johnson, two senior pros were also in the hunt for a triple crown—Rick Witsken and Beth Bellamy. Only Bellamy, however, was able to procure the triple crown on the weekend. Congrats to Beth Bellamy!

The APP Tour Features Pickleball Road Warriors | Pickler Pickleball

  • Andrea Koop and Lauren Stratman completed the ultimate comeback. After the pair lost their first match of the women’s doubles bracket, Koop and Stratman came all the way back, completing the “double dip” against Jorja Johnson and Anna Bright, and grabbed the gold medal. APP Tour founder, Ken Herrmann, even called Stratman the “player of the month,” as she has won the last three women’s doubles events in a row on the APP Tour.

The APP Tour Features Pickleball Road Warriors | Pickler Pickleball

  • Andrei Daescu and Dylan Frazier held off an attempted “double dip” from JW Johnson and Dekel Bar. With a young gun and a big man on each side of the pickleball net, it was Daescu and Frazier who came out on top.

The APP Tour Features Pickleball Road Warriors | Pickler Pickleball

  • Mixed doubles was all about Dylan Frazier and Anna Bright, who squeaked out the finals (again, in the “if necessary” game to 15) to claim the gold medal over their common gender doubles partners and friends, the brother-sister duo of JW and Jorja Johnson. As a result, Frazier grabbed double gold, Bright snagged three medals on the weekend, and JW Johnson went 0-3 on Championship Sunday, having to settle for three silver medals.

The APP Tour Features Pickleball Road Warriors | Pickler Pickleball

  • Also, shoutout to the bronze medalists at the APP Chicago Open: James Ignatowich and Rosie Johanson in their respective gender singles events, Etta Wright and Lee Whitwell in women’s doubles, Thomas Wilson and DJ Young in men’s doubles, and Andrea Koop and Zane Navratil in mixed doubles.

Congrats to all of the medalists at the APP Philadelphia Open and APP Chicago Open!

“Hail, Chicago”: 2023 APP Chicago Open

Jane Hollon

This weekend’s APP Chicago Open attracted over 800 players and a remarkable number of fans. Championship Court brimmed with vibrant energy, creating an electrifying atmosphere complemented by first-rate ESPN+ coverage.

A Series Of Upsets

The absence of frequent medalists Parris Todd , Simone Jardim , and Hunter Johnson opened up the field for other players and teams to make a splash.

What we saw was a series of upsets across the four days of play leading to one of the most exciting Championship Sundays to date, with four out of five of the matches going to the 15-point championship tiebreak.

View this post on Instagram A post shared by Jane Hollon (@obsessed.with.pickleball)

Men’s Singles – Jaume Martinez Vich Vs. Christopher Haworth

At APP tournaments , it’s common to see Hunter Johnson facing off against his brother, Yates, in the finals. With Hunter absent from the draw, Yates secured the #1 seed.

Ross Whittaker, a relative newcomer who began the year competing in singles qualifying rounds before earning a place in the main draws, achieved the first major upset of the weekend by defeating Y. Johnson (11-13, 11-6, 12-10).

Jaume Martinez Vich

If you’ve been following the professional pickleball scene recently, you’re likely familiar with the rising star Jaume Martinez Vich .

Martinez Vich, the former hitting partner of Rafael Nadal, has been consistently turning heads at PPA tournaments, so it came as no surprise when he advanced to the gold medal match.

Although he faced a tough loss in the opening round against Aanick Lohani (11-9, 11-8), he quickly rebounded, breezing through the backdraw. He found redemption against Lohani (with a decisive score of 15-1) before defeating Ryler Dehaert (12-10, 11-7) in the bronze medal match.

Friendly Banter

In contrast to Martinez Vich, Christopher Haworth had a relatively smooth journey to the gold medal match, successfully defeating numerous formidable opponents. As Sunday arrived, both athletes were excited to play in front of the lively Chicago crowd.

Throughout the match, they engaged in friendly banter with each other and interacted with the enthusiastic fans, even cracking jokes when the score was tight.

“When I play with people, I feel less pressure for some reason because I like talking to them. Thank you to everybody for coming to support and thank you to Ken and the APP in general for giving me this opportunity to compete in this tournament.” Martinez Vich when asked about his preference to play in front of a crowd.

Ultimately, Martinez Vich won the 2 out of 3 matches (11-6, 11-5), forcing a thrilling 15-point championship tiebreak, which he barely pulled off (15-13). One of the points from this thrilling gold medal match even made it to SportsCenter’s Top 10.

Women’s Singles – Dominique Schaefer vs. Salome Devidze

When Dominique Schaeffer secured her first upset victory against Salome Devidze at the APP St. Louis Open , it became clear that she is a force to be reckoned with.

Schaeffer has consistently demonstrated her potential to compete at the highest level in women’s singles over the past few months, and now, she appears to be emerging as the player to beat.

Schaefer secured commanding victories against Klara Nowack (11-0, 11-4) and Alix Truong (11-0, 11-0) before sending Devidze to the back draw in the semi-finals (0-11, 11-3, 11-2). Her exceptional performance on Friday concluded with an impressive win over the highly skilled singles player Judit Castillo (6-11, 11-5, 11-5).

Decisive Victories

Devidze made a resilient comeback, dominating the backdraw with decisive victories against Shelby Bates (15-7) and Jenna Hessert (11-5), leading up to a hard-fought three-game showdown against Judit Castillo in the bronze medal match (11-2, 10-12, 11-8).

The gold medal match between Schaefer and Devidze showcased an impressive level of women’s singles pickleball. Schaefer ultimately emerged victorious (11-5, 5-11, 11-4), and it seems a compelling new rivalry has now been ignited.

Mixed Doubles – Pisnik/Emmrich vs Erokhina/Lanier

Susannah Barr and Andrei Daescu have made themselves at home on the top of the podium for quite some time.

So, the decisive upset that Tina Pisnik (Slovenia) and Martin Emmrich (Germany) delivered in the round of 16  was surprising (11-5, 11-3). Pisnik and Emmrich are both new to the professional pickleball scene but have been improving rapidly. They made it straight through the bracket into the gold medal match.

Genie Erokhina and Spencer Lanier delivered several big upsets of their own. They beat Rob Nunnery and Meghan Fudge (8-11. 11-3, 11-5), Michael Loyd and Shelby Bates (11-3, 11-7) and Allison Phillips and Ryler DeHeart (11-9, 4-11, 11-8) on their way to the winner’s bracket final.

Tightly Contested Match

After losing that tightly contested match (6-11, 12-10, 4-11), they were set to play Barr and Daescu, who had battled all the way back through the back draw, on Championship Sunday.

On Sunday, Erokhina and Lanier continued their upset streak by defeating Barr and Daescu (11-5, 2-11, 11-7) in the bronze medal match.

They also triumphed over Pisnik and Emmrich (11-9, 11-9) in the first part of the gold medal match, leading to another intense 15-point championship tiebreak where Pisnik and Emmrich regrouped and fought their way to clinch the gold (15-11).

This is the first gold medal for the team of Tina Pisnik and Martin Emmrich, but it probably won’t be the last.

Men’s Doubles – Auvergne/Cincola vs. Daescu/Nunnery

Rob Nunnery and Andrei Daescu have been consistently dominant, securing numerous gold medals on the APP tour in 2023, making them the perennial favorites in men’s doubles. So, it was no surprise to see them breeze through the competition on their way to the gold medal match, only giving up 26 points in 4 matches on Saturday.

Stefan Auvergne and John Cincola faced a more challenging path. Their journey began with an upset by Caden Nemoff and Jack Munro (5-11, 7-11) in their first match of the day, which led them to the back draw. Losses like this serve as a reminder that having a bye may potentially put you at a disadvantage when facing a team that is already warmed up from their previous match.

An Impressive Streak

Auvergne and Cincola went on an impressive streak, securing victory in seven back-draw matches before defeating Michael Loyd and Augustus Ge in the bronze medal match (11-7, 11-6) to secure their spot in the finals. Loyd and Ge had a breakthrough performance this weekend, successfully establishing themselves as formidable contenders on the APP Tour.

On Sunday, Auvergne and Cincola achieved the most significant upset of the weekend, convincingly defeating Nunnery and Daescu (11-4, 11-3), leading to an intense 15-point championship tiebreak.

This match was a battle, and in the end, Auvergne and Cincola secured their first gold medals as a team in 2023 (15-13).

Women’s Doubles – Fudge/Barr Vs. Truong/Glozman

Without the undefeated team of Parris Todd and Simone Jardim to contend with, the women’s doubles field was wide open.

Meghan Fudge and Susannah Barr, affectionately known as “Fudgebarr,” were the frontrunners. They often clashed with Todd and Jardim in the finals and won gold when their rivals were absent.

Their journey through the bracket was relatively smooth until they found themselves in a hard-fought battle, narrowly clinching victory against Alix Truong and Vivian Glozman in the winner’s bracket final (11-2, 9-11, 11-8).

Fiery And Expressive Playing Style

This is only Alix Truong and Vivian Glozman’s third APP tournament as a partnership. Truong, at just 18 years old, has been part of the APP tour since 2021, while Glozman made her professional debut only a few months ago.

Truong’s fiery and expressive playing style often leads to jubilant cheers after great points, while Glozman, with a perpetual smile, maintains a mild-mannered demeanor. Despite their contrasting personalities, both possess impressive athleticism and formidable power.

Their dynamic chemistry was on full display as they took this tournament by storm.

Following their loss in the winner’s bracket final, Truong and Glozman defeated Tammy Emmrich and Tina Piskik, both of whom had an impressive tournament, in the bronze medal match (3-11, 11-1, 12-10). This match stood out as one of the most thrilling of the entire tournament, as all four players recognized the opportunity before them to reach the top of the podium.

The gold medal match was challenging, but Truong and Glozman appeared to be in control for most of the match. They won the first two out of three portion (11-6, 11-9), leading to yet another best-of-15 championship tiebreak. While this match was closely contested, Barr and Fudge couldn’t handle the heat coming from the opposing side, ultimately resulting in a victory for Truong and Glozman (15-12).

“This is my first women’s gold and I’m so happy to do it with Viv by my side. We have several more to go together so we really want to bring it. I think it sets the standard that we can be here every week.” Alix Truong in her post-match interview

The next stop on the APP Tour is the New Jersey Open (September 6-10,) where we can expect to see more fresh faces shake things up.

Billy Joel's CBS special airs Sunday: What to expect

app tour chicago

Billy Joel’s first-ever network concert special will air on CBS Sunday at 9 p.m., marking another milestone in the singer’s enduring career.

The special was recorded at Madison Square Garden on March 28 — the 100th show of Joel’s 10-year residency at the storied venue. It will also be available to stream on Paramount+.

Joel's three-hour concert will be reduced to a two-hour running time, which means some of the 25 songs he played won’t make the cut. CBS hasn’t yet revealed the pared-down set list, but the network released a handful of performance clips that include “New York State of Mind,” “It’s Still Rock and Roll to Me,” “My Life” and “Scenes From an Italian Restaurant.” The special will also include a performance by Sting, who took over vocals for Joel’s “Big Man on Mulberry Street.”

Joel, 74, is enjoying a remarkable late-life resurgence. Beyond his record-breaking residency at the Garden, Joel recently released “Turn the Lights Back On,” his first original song in nearly 20 years and his first Billboard-charting track since 1997. It was accompanied by an innovative AI-enhanced video that de-aged the singer back to his 20s; Joel also performed the song at the 66th Grammy Awards this past February.

Joel’s 150th lifetime show at the Garden, which will close out his residency, is scheduled for July 25. He’ll play his first-ever show with Rod Stewart at the Cleveland Browns Stadium in September. And he’ll continue a limited U.S. tour accompanied by Sting that will run through November.

Pro-Palestinian demonstrators block traffic in Chicago and San Francisco

Passengers walk to a security checkpoint at O'Hare International Airport in Chicago, Monday,...

CHICAGO (AP) — Pro-Palestinian demonstrators blocked roadways in Illinois, California, New York and Oregon on Monday, temporarily shutting down travel into Chicago O’Hare International Airport, onto the Golden Gate and Brooklyn bridges and on a busy West Coast highway.

In Chicago, protesters linked arms and blocked lanes of Interstate 190 leading into one of the nation’s busiest airports around 7 a.m., a demonstration they said was part of a global “economic blockade to free Palestine,” according to Rifqa Falaneh, one of the organizers.

Traffic in the San Francisco Bay Area was snarled for hours as demonstrators shut down all vehicle, pedestrian and bike traffic on the Golden Gate Bridge and chained themselves to 55-gallon drums filled with cement across Interstate 880 in Oakland. Protesters marching into Brooklyn blocked Manhattan-bound traffic on the Brooklyn Bridge. In Eugene, Oregon, protesters blocked Interstate 5, shutting down traffic on the major highway for about 45 minutes.

O’Hare warned travelers on the social platform X to take alternative forms of transportation with car travel “substantially delayed this morning due to protest activity.”

Some travelers stuck in standstill traffic left their cars and walked the final leg to the airport along the freeway, trailing their luggage behind them.

Among them was Madeline Hannan from suburban Chicago. She was headed to O’Hare for a work trip to Florida when her and her husband’s car ended up stalled for 20 minutes. She got out and “both ran and speed walked” more than 1 mile. She said she made it to the gate on time, but barely.

“This was an inconvenience,” she said in a telephone interview from Florida. “But in the grand scheme of things going on overseas, it’s a minor inconvenience.”

While individual travelers may have been affected, operations at the airport appeared near normal with delays of under 15 minutes, according to the Chicago Department of Aviation.

Inbound traffic toward O’Hare resumed around 9 a.m.

About 20 protesters were arrested at the Golden Gate Bridge demonstration and traffic resumed shortly after noon, according to the California Highway Patrol. The agency said officers were making arrests at two points on the interstate, including one spot where roughly 300 protesters refused orders to disperse,

“Attempting to block or shut down a freeway or state highway to protest is unlawful, dangerous, and prevents motorists from safely reaching their destinations,” the agency said in a statement.

Oregon State Police said 52 protestors were were arrested for disorderly conduct following the Interstate 5 protest in Eugene, Oregon, about 110 miles (177 kilometers) south of Portland. Six vehicles were towed from the scene.

New York Police made numerous arrests, saying 150 protesters initially involved in the march around 3:15 p.m., but that number quickly grew. The bridge was fully reopened by 5 p.m.

In Chicago, dozens of protesters were arrested, according to Falaneh. Chicago police said Monday that “multiple people” were taken into custody after a protest where people obstructed traffic but did not have a detailed count.

Protesters say they chose the location, in part, because O’Hare is one of the largest airports. Among other things, they’ve called for an immediate  ceasefire  in the war between Israel and Hamas.

Anti-  war  protesters have demonstrated in Chicago near daily since  Hamas’ Oct. 7  attack on southern Israel that killed around 1,200 people. Israeli warplanes and ground troops have conducted a scorched-earth campaign on the Gaza Strip.

The Israeli offensive has killed more than 33,700 Palestinians, according to the Gaza health ministry. The ministry  does not differentiate  between civilians and combatants in its count but says  women and children  make up two-thirds of the dead.
