Star Trek has had a long and storied history, ever since the late 1960s with countless TV series, movies and novels released. Now, the Star Trek universe continues to expand with season 3 of Star Trek: Picard  streaming on Paramount+ and Star Trek: Strange New Worlds season 2 premiering this year.

NewJeans and Levi's Link to Celebrate 150 Years of 501 Denim

If you’re a major Trekkie, the 50th anniversary of Trek is the start of a new era, with upcoming releases expanding the timeline and story even further. While we don’t know much about the plot of yet-to-be-released series like Section 31 and Starfleet Academy , you can still gear up for their release and celebrate Trek day (September 8) with the best Star Trek merch on the market right now.

There are a lot of dupes and low-quality products out there, so to make your job easier, we’ve gone ahead and rounded up the top Star Trek merch right down below. Keep on reading to find all your gift, collectible and figurine needs.

1. Redbubble Star Trek Merch

Redbubble has a whole section dedicated to all things Star Trek from T-shirts to stickers and notebooks. One product we recommend is the “Star Trek Live Long and Prosper” unisex tee which is available in a variety of different colors from classic black to bright orange.

The print decal on this graphic tee is the Vulcan salute with the words “Live Long and Prosper” embedded inside. You can even choose where the print goes, on the front or the back of the tee. The tee itself features a relaxed, casual fit, allowing you to pair it with a pair of blue jeans or layer it under a jacket on colder days.

Star Trek Graphic T-Shirt

Price: $34.31

2. Funko POP Pop! TV: Star Trek – Captain Kirk

Funko Pops are a great addition to your office desk, bookshelf or nightstand table and the brand’s got a whole collection of Trek -themed bobbleheads (including a Spock Pop! inspired by the cover of the first-ever  Star Trek  comic book that comes in a special case).

We recommend this Captain Kirk one which depicts him seated in the captain’s chair in his quintessential pale yellow shirt. The entire figurine is about 4.5-inches tall and weighs just about a gram. Trekkies loved it too, with many saying it’s a must-have for William Shatner fans — the original (and best) Captain Kirk.

Price: $19.99

3. Hot Topic Star Trek Merch

Hot Topic is another brand with licensed Star Trek merch , and they’ve even got a couple of new releases Star Trek: Picard .

We like this “One Impossible Thing At A Time” sweatshirt that’s got Patrick Stewart’s Jean-Luc Picard embroidered on it. There are four muted colors to choose from and it’s unisex so both you and your significant other can take turns wearing it. Not your style? There’s a lot more Star Trek merchandise to choose from, check out the full collection here .

‘Star Trek: Picard’ Hoodie

Price: $44.90+

4. Hero Collector Eaglemoss Star Trek U.S.S. Enterprise Model

Every Trekkie knows that there’s no Star Trek universe without the U.S.S Enterprise — which was the main setting for the original series. This true-to-form replica is built from an ABS (type of hard plastic) material and comes in a box and stand so you can display your ship with pride. It’s only about four inches tall and six inches wide, according to the brand which means you can use it as home decor or as a keepsake for your office desk.

Star Trek U.S.S. Enterprise

Price: $190.00

5. Playmobil Star Trek U.S.S. Enterprise NCC-1701

For a more interactive and wider model, go with the Playmobil Star Trek U.S.S. Enterprise that comes with lights and sounds, inspired straight from the Star Trek TV series.

This collectible is compatible with the Playmobil Star Trek AR app which allows you to interact with beloved characters like Spock, Captain Kirk and Scotty. The design is also pretty accurate with Captain Kirk’s chair in the middle surrounded by the rest of the crew. And, you can either place this collector’s item on the stand or even suspend it with the aid of a hanging device.

Playmobil Star Trek U.S.S. Enterprise

Price: $499.99 $349.48

6. Star Trek Tribble Interactive Plush

Tribbles were a small, troublesome alien species introduced early on in the Star Trek universe. This Bluetooth-enabled Tribble Plush is just five inches in size and can guard your stuff (just screams), search for Klingons (screams and trills), or stay calm (just trills), controlled through a smartphone app. If you’ve got a whole household of Trekkies, this is an (almost) perfect new pet.

Tribble Interactive Plush

Price: $10.95

7. TUBBZ Star Trek Duck Figurines

This rather fun collaboration features your favorite Trek characters in rubber duck form.

If you’ve been recently binging Star Trek: Picard , we suggest picking this Jean-Luc Picard Duck Figurine which features the iconic pose of the popular character. This vinyl figurine also comes packaged in a Star Trek tub display stand. You can even collect the rest of the TUBBZ Starfleet to add to your collection.

TUBBZ Jean-Luc Picard Duck Figurine

Price: $22.99

8. Ukonic Star Trek: The Next Generation Dinnerware Set

Whether you’re looking to throw a Star Trek-themed dinner party or are just in need of new dinnerware, go with this 16-piece ceramic Ukonic Star Trek: The Next Generation Dinnerware Set.

You’ll get four dinner plates, four salad plates, four bowls and four mugs. Each piece also features a futuristic design based on the LCARS interface — the computer operating system used in Star Trek: The Next Generation.  Plus, every bowl and plate is also both microwave and dishwasher safe for easy cleanup after you’ve served your own version of Hasperat and Gagh.

SFX Hot Topic: Your thoughts wanted on the future of Star Trek

Tell us what you think of all the latest developments in the Trek universe and your words could appear in SFX magazine!

Patrick Stewart as Jean-Luc Picard and Isa Briones as Dahj in Star Trek: Picard.

It’s an exciting time to be a Star Trek fan, and we'd love to know what you're making of it for the letters pages of SFX.  Jean-Luc Picard will be back on our screens soon, and the first trailer revealed that Star Trek: Picard will mark the return of Seven of Nine, Data and Borg character Hugh. Are you excited to see them back, or wearily sighing? What do you think new character Dahj’s deal is? What are you hoping for from the series? Quentin Tarantino’s also been talking about his plans for a possible Star Trek film, saying it’d be Pulp Fiction-y and R-rated (a script’s been written by The Revenant’s Mark Smith). Would Tarantino wreck big-screen Trek, or revitalise it? Plus Pike, Spock and Number One will be back in three Short Treks. Would you like to see them get their own spin-off show? We also now know that the specialty of the ship in animated series Lower Decks will be Second Contact (“finding all the good places to eat, setting up the communications stuff…”). Potentially amusing? There’s so much to talk about!

This is your chance to have your thoughts immortalised in print! Email us at [email protected] . Alternatively, post a comment below, or  tweet at @SFXmagazine  using the hashtag #SFXhottopic. The best contributions will be showcased in the pages of SFX issue 318 (on sale September 11).

And don't forget, there are plenty of other subjects up for discussion. Did The Boys have you spitting out your tea? Are you excited by the Marvel Phase 4 line-up ? What are you hoping for from Joker ? And if you've read our latest issue, have you got any comments? Whatever it is you need to get off your chest, we'd love to hear from you.

A look from the Star Wars by Her Universe collection.

Hot Topic is getting in on the “Star Wars” craze with today’s launch of the Star Wars by Her Universe collection.

Like the intergalactic film series, this rendition of Darth Vader, Princess Leia and other “Star Wars”-inspired clothing is multidimensional. Her Universe founder and designer Ashley Eckstein is also an actress. Her credits include being the voice of “Ashoko Tano” in the ongoing series “Star Wars Rebels,” as well as its predecessor “Star Wars: The Clone Years.” In an interview, Eckstein said, “There is definitely a need for geek chic, not just as a fashion trend but it’s also an underserved market.”

The new Star Wars by Her Universe assortment includes a $65 Darth Vader cape dress and a $70 Leia dress (inspired by Carrie Fisher’s Princess Leia character in the original George Lucas-directed film; that style will be released next month). The majority of the collection will be sold in all 677 Hot Topic stores and online. The designs will also be offered in plus sizes. The next installment in the film series, “Star Wars The Force Awakens,” hits theaters Dec. 18.

After partnering with The Araca Group, Eckstein pitched Lucasfilm again and secured a deal in 2010.

Eckstein’s confidence in starting Her Universe stemmed from market research that pegged women as half the sci-fi fan base, and responsible for 85 percent of all consumer purchases. “When I learned that, I thought, ‘OK, I’m not a mathematician but those numbers aren’t adding up.”

Her Universe recently started selling more than 30 styles of “Star Wars” products for girls and boys, women and men through Disney Parks in Orlando and Anaheim, and is in talks to expand internationally. Having grown up in Orlando, Eckstein had a job in high school dancing as a cheerleader in Dineyworld’s Hercules parade. Her father also worked at the theme park for 16 years as a food buyer, a job that indirectly helped Eckstein with her current second career at Her Universe. “That’s when I first learned about margins. It was as they related to turkey legs, but it’s the same thing with T-shirts. Actually, that was a good beginning for learning about the industry.”

In the past five years, Her Universe has developed into more than a $10 million business thanks in part to other licensing deals with Marvel, Star Trek and Dr. Who. Eckstein owns her company with her husband David, a retired player for the San Diego Padres. “He is not involved in the company day-to-day but I call him ‘my closer.’ When I have big meetings, I call him in to close them,” she said.

On another front, the Comic-Con International subscription video-on-demand (SVOD) service, the new platform from Lionsgate and Comic-Con International that will launch early next year, will feature an original, unscripted series with Her Universe. The show will be an offshoot of a fashion show and design competition Eckstein hosts at Comic Con’s San Diego edition. In addition to Comic Con, she makes appearances at Disney Parks. “We try to keep things hybrid,” she said.

Star Trek: 10 Things You Didn't Know About Tasha Yar

Star trek: 10 things you need to know about the lost era, star trek: 10 times opening credits spoiled the surprise, 10 greatest redemption stories in star trek, star trek: 10 more alien encounters before first contact, star trek: 10 characters who got away with murder, star trek: 10 things you didn’t know about the duras sisters, 10 most forgettable star trek: voyager episodes, 10 dumbest things in star trek the original series, 10 "no body, no death" cases in star trek.

Screen Rant

10 examples of social commentary on star trek: the next generation.

Star Trek The Next Generation occasionally commented on individual social subjects debated in public discourse in addition to themes of war and peace.

Star Trek   refused to shy away from social issues and commentary, using a sci-fi lens to tell necessary stories. In the original series, there was a metaphor for the Cold War, which showcases an imperfect utopian future where nations and races attempted to live in peace and co-exist together. As a result, they explored and examined other cultures as opposed to the threat of perpetual war and nuclear annihilation between superpowers.

Star Trek: The Next Generation premiered in 1987 during a different era of social upheaval. It carried on the tradition of its predecessor occasionally commenting on individual social subjects debated in public discourse in addition to themes of war and peace. Some topics were provocative and remain relevant today.

The Enterprise encounters two scientists, Raval and Serova, while searching for a missing Federation medical transport, who claim the use of warp drive in their region of space is detrimental to their planet's survival. When Chief Engineer Geordi LaForge and Data fail to corroborate their evidence, Serova takes matters into her own hands and sacrifices herself to prove their theory.

The seventh season episode "Force of Nature," aired at a time when pollution of Earth's ozone layer was a hot topic debated frequently by politicians. Science fiction often examines real-world events and employs storytelling motifs and plot points that illustrate their importance thereby encouraging the audience to seek perspective.

The Definition Of Humanity

Data is a unique example of artificial life, and as a result, draws the attention of Starfleet's science division. When Data is forcibly transferred to their custody for further study, he threatens to resign and must prove he is fully sentient to enjoy the rights and protections of the Federation. He enlists Picard's help to disprove the notion he is the property of Starfleet and entitled to freedom.

RELATED:  The 10 Most Profound Star Trek Quotes, According To Reddit

One of the most recurring themes in science fiction is the question of "what does it mean to be human?" Data is an android designed to mimic the appearance and behavior of a human. However, his programming allows him to pursue higher aspirations. Replicating Data's likeness and abilities became a theme of Star Trek: Picard season one.

Learning To Cope With Trauma

Following Captain Picard's experience as Locutus of Borg in the two-part episode "The Best of Both Worlds," he returns home to La Barre, France to visit his only living relatives. After he discovers his brother Robert has become like their overbearing father, Jean Luc confesses to feeling powerless as the result of being forced to help the Borg eliminate an entire Starfleet armada at the Battle of Wolf 359.

Picard's trauma of enduring bodily harm and psychological torture shines a light on the experiences of those who have survived horrific acts of violence. In the aftermath, Picard is quiet and resentful of Robert's inquires but when confronted directly in a brotherly scuffle, he realizes that recounting the emotional aspect is a good coping mechanism and ultimately helps him reconnect with Robert.

The Implementation Of Justice

Wesley Crusher became the subject of a debate about the death penalty in the first season episode "Justice." The Edo lived in a virtually lawless society that was peaceful and harmonic. However, an archaic law about disturbing plant life suddenly thrust Wesley into a life-or-death war of words between Captain Picard and the Eido council.

In addition to the death penalty, the issue of religion came into play as the Edo council insisted to Picard their deity in orbit with the Enterprise would enforce their ruling. The dialogue to end this episode posed several profound questions about the virtue of absolutism and the philosophy of justice which is constantly evolving.

Exchange of Cultures

Commander Riker volunteers to serve time aboard a Klingon cruiser as the first officer to learn aspects of the Federation's longtime rival that are unknown or misunderstood. He finds Klingons value honor above all else, that their worth is the sum of their deeds in battle. In addition, he learns they have similar family values to humans, but their cuisine is only for the strongest of stomachs.

The preaching of cooperation with other species (races) is a central theme of the Star Trek franchise. Its mission statement is reviewed in every episode; "...to explore strange new worlds. To seek out new life and new civilizations. To boldly go where no one's gone before." This season two gem "A Matter of Honor" is perhaps the most reinforcing example of this higher philosophy.

Eccentric Personality

Beginning with "Hollow Pursuits" in season four, TNG introduced one of its more memorable characters in Lt. Reginald Barclay. Portrayed by Dwight Schultz ( The A-Team ) as a recluse on the holodeck , at first, the audience learns he is quite knowledgeable in the field of engineering but struggles mightily in social situations. Members of the crew acting childishly and senior officers expressing their frustration with him publicly does not help.

With autism being heavily discussed in the public and medical community, the purpose of Mr. Barclay's character was to convey that some forms of genius come off as narcotic and strange, but these people have deep-seated feelings below the surface. Barclay's storyline argued his gifts should not be ignored or the subject of ridicule but embraced as essential qualities.

Ritual Suicide

The subject of suicide is a difficult one to examine in everyday society much less portray in film or television. The Next Generation attempted to offer a unique perspective in "Half-A-Life," guest-starring David Odgen Stiers ( M*A*S*H ) as Timicin, who by the tradition of his people, was to submit to voluntary euthanasia after his 60th birthday.

RELATED:  10 Guest Characters From Star Trek TNG Who Should Have Had A Follow-Up Episode, Ranked

As Timicin's would-be love interest, Lwaxana Troi lobbied Timicin to seek asylum aboard the Enterprise to avoid the rite. A brewing diplomatic incident ensued that required one of Captain Picard's classic sermons regarding the Prime Directive, the supreme law of the Federation preaching non-interference with cultures respecting unusual laws and traditions, to solve.

Alternative Communication

Making first contact with another alien race isn't always easy. Picard found this out the hard way in "Darmok," where he and his Tamarian counterpart participated in a bonding ritual that reenacted the most storied event in Tamarian legend; Darmok and Julad at Tanagra about two strangers who cooperated in a battle against a great beast.

The Tamarians speak an incoherent language and communicate by example or "metaphor" as Picard discovers. The award-winning episode put forth the idea that the ability to communicate with different people and their cultures is difficult with patience and practice becoming a virtue such as using sign language to communicate with someone with hearing deficiency.

In the fifth season episode "The Game," a virtual reality interface activity spread like a brush fire aboard the Enterprise. Soon after, the crew began to neglect their daily routine, and had it not been for the foresight of Wesley Crusher, they almost surrendered the ship to an alien race determined to introduce the game to every corner of the galaxy.

An ongoing health crisis in western society is addiction derived from substance abuse. While not citing drugs, specifically, the overall tone of the episode can be attributed to any activity or action that results in a habit that brings about destructive behavior. The example used in the story was the game overstimulated the pleasure center of the brain.

Gender Identity

When William met Soren while working with the J'naii scientist to rescue their missing colleagues, Commander Riker grows curious about their androgynous race and learns they once identified as male and female. Soren is a remnant, embracing their curiosity and emotions, determined to pursue a romantic relationship with Riker.

Gender identity is a divisive issue in western culture. This episode from 1992 conveyed perspectives on this sensitive subject. Riker's disgust for the official J'naii policy of emotional suppression brings his Starfleet oath into conflict. Soren desires her individual freedom which is a threat to the State, which employ therapy techniques that eliminate Soren's forbidden traits. Ultimately the Prime Directive prohibited any member of the Enterprise crew from intervening.

Star Trek: The Next Generation: 10 Famous Guest Stars You Forgot

With some big names like Kirsten Dunst and Stephen Hawking, there are also a few surprising guest stars in Star Trek: The Next Generation.

Star Trek: The Next Generation went off the air in 1994, well before today's crop of famous faces made their mark on television. But as old as the series may feel today, there are some cameos that still feel fresh. Here are ten guest stars that took part in that brave, new mission that fans might be surprised to rediscover.

Ashley Judd

The Next Generation provided Ashley Judd with her first on-screen experience. The star and activist earned her stripes playing Ensign Robin Lefler in two Season 5 episodes, "Darmok" and "The Game." Though her role in "Darmok" is small, the episode is a memetic fave that untangles a linguistic riddle through Picard's Shakespearean flair. But Judd gets a taste of the spotlight in her second appearance, where Lefler and Wesley Crusher struggle to resist the lure of a dangerously addictive video game. Wil Wheaton gives Judd her first on-screen kiss by the end of the episode, a charming beginning to her healthy career.

Tony Todd adds a feverish intensity wherever he appears. His starring role in the cult horror classic Candyman  is an example of him at his best. It's a talent that also made him one of the greatest recurring Klingons in The Next Generation , appearing as Worf's ferocious brother Kurn. Kurn first arrives on the Enterprise as part of a practice exercise, quickly going toe to toe with the crew. But his goal is to get close to Worf. Kurn was raised by another family, his lineage a secret due to the cloud over their dishonorable father, Mogh. Kurn appeared three times in The  Next Generation  and returned once in Deep Space 9 's "Sons of Mogh." Todd also played an aging Jake Sisko and, once in Voyager , unrecognizable as a mysterious Alpha-Hirogen hunter.

Diedrich Bader

Diedrich Bader is still known to many as one of Drew Carey's close buddies in The Drew Carey Show , although his turn as the invasive neighbor Lawrence in Office Space is arguably his most enduring moment. Today he's a popular voice, slated to appear as King Randor in Kevin Smith's take on Masters of the Universe . But 1989's "The Emissary" was his first television role, giving him a little background time on a standout episode that dug deep into Worf's heart. It's not a big role, and Bader's credited only as a Tactical Crewman. But it's still a great bit to have in the resume, as appearing in Star Trek is still a bucket list wish for many actors today.

Stephen Hawking

Stephen Hawking was one of the modern giants of physics, reshaping the scientific understanding of general relativity and becoming a bestselling author with his layperson-approachable text A Brief History of Time . Hawking was also, like many in his high-tech fields, a big fan of science fiction. According to Stephen Hawking: A Life Well Lived by Kitty Ferguson, it was Leonard Nimoy who discovered that Hawking wanted to guest star on Star Trek , and Nimoy reached out to make it happen. Hawking is the only person to play himself, appearing in the sixth season episode "Descent" as a member of Lt. Cmdr Data's poker game against some of history's greatest scientific minds.

Famke Jannsen

Famke Jannsen became a hot topic as a Bond Girl in 1995's GoldenEye  and later endeared herself to X-Men fans as the face of Jean Grey in the 2000 film franchise. But Jean and Professor Xavier actually had their first encounter three years before her breakout moment, when Jannsen played the empathetic Kamala in "The Perfect Mate." As a Kriosian metamorph, her destiny was to marry for diplomatic and political purposes. But Kamala falls in love with Jean-Luc Picard. She imprints her personality on his desires instead, though she still marries her arranged partner. It's a terrific episode. Although seeing Jannsen in a gentle, mentoring relationship with Patrick Stewart almost a decade later can be surprising for Star Trek fans.

Mick Fleetwood

Fleetwood Mac's eponymous frontman famously loves two things: his beard and Star Trek . Fleetwood was willing to do anything  to earn a cameo on  The   Next Generation , so long as whatever character he played got to take a jaunt on the transporter. In the second season episode "Manhunt," Mick got his wish. Playing a fishlike Antedian ambassador in prosthetics that required Fleetwood to temporarily sacrifice his beard, his diplomatic contingent beams aboard the Enterprise. The Antedians face-off with Lwaxana Troi, who, in between her vivacious hunt for her latest mate, foils their plans to bomb a diplomatic conference.

Stephen Root

Stephen Root is the beloved character actor behind O ffice Space 's infamous Milton. He's also the voice behind dozens of today's cartoon characters, heard everywhere from Gravity Falls to Amphibia . He's an unlikely figure to think of when talking about Klingons, but he plays the hostile yet good-natured Klingon captain K'Vada in one of The  Next Generation 's most acclaimed two-parters, "Unification." He's integral to getting Picard and Data behind Romulan lines to search for Ambassador Spock. He even allows Data to access his ship's database to fox the Romulan spies seeking to disrupt their mission.

James Cromwell

James Cromwell is an actor and activist with an extensive film career. For at least one generation, he's the human heart of Babe , and for Next Generation fans, he's Zefram Cochrane, the engineer at the heart of 1996's Star Trek: First Contact . But Cromwell was a Star Trek veteran long before his big-screen hours with the Enterprise crew , first appearing in Season 3's "The Hunted" and returning several seasons later, unrecognizable as a wrinkled Yridian named Jaglom Shrek, in "Birthright." Polite and private, it's unknown how big a science fiction fan Cromwell actually is. However, with dozens of appearances in the genre, it's clear he's put his heart into the work.

Bebe Neuwirth

Bebe Neuwirth is an Emmy-winning actor best known for playing Frasier Crane's spouse, Dr. Lilith Sternin, on both Cheers and Frasier . She's also a Broadway staple and a reliable fixture on Madam Secretary . But in 1991, she took a quick break from Cheers to appear in the fourth season episode, "First Contact." A huge fan of the franchise, she plays Lanel, a nurse and xenophile who offers to help the transfigured Commander Riker escape hospital imprisonment -- for a sexy price.

Kirsten Dunst

Kirsten Dunst became a sensation at age 12 as the too-young vampire Claudia in 1994's Interview with the Vampire  and later built her career on taking chances on films like Lars von Trier's Melancholia . She's best known to many as the Raimi Spiderverse's Mary Jane Watson , long-time true love of Peter Parker. But just one year before her breakout role, Dunst guest-starred on Star Trek in the season seven episode "Dark Page." She plays an alien girl named Hedril, a telepath and one of the first of her species to learn to speak aloud. Her tutor, Lwaxana Troi, has unconsciously connected the girl with her deceased first daughter, Kestra. The experience leads to a traumatic shock for Lwaxana, and eventually, the first steps toward healing.
