GRAVEL TOUR DU MONT BLANC

200km – 8500m D+

Both on the road and off roads the Tour du Mont Blanc is a mythical route, as proof of the success of events such as the Tour du Mont Blanc Cyclo and the UTMB.

The GTMB will gather the best of the 2 routes since the Gravel bike allows to ride on the road as well as in the paths.

The roof of Europe, between glaciers, torrents, valleys and alpine passes, offers a single chance to evolve on a unique, fragile and above all demanding natural territory. With no less than 8 mythic passes to cross, in- cluding 2 climbs to more than 2.500m with the Col de la Seigne and the Grand Col Ferret, the course will undoubtedly be one of the hardest in the world over a distance of 200km.

#whatisgravel: An exploration of Mont Blanc

The Roof of Europe, more commonly known as Mont Blanc, culminates at 4810 metres and to circle its base, three countries must be crossed. The subject of many controversies between France and Italy, there is no doubt that this geological monster clearly lives in both countries, but the real issue concerns its summit, and who can claim stewardship of the eleventh highest mountain in the world. This perhaps emphasises the lunacy of territories and borders – owning nature on this scale is surely not possible.

The destiny of Mont Blanc is historically linked to that of the city of Nice – another location that has passed between Italian and French ownership. In 1860, Victor Emmanuel II of Savoy, desiring to unify Italy and become its king, ceded the Sardinian states of Nice and Savoy to France by the Treaty of Turin, in exchange for military and diplomatic aid from France. The treaty includes the summit of Mont Blanc.

If we still needed to argue the case for Gravel riding’s stature in the velocipedic landscape, this Tour du Mont Blanc will provide sufficient evidence. Asking the question #whatisgravel at this altitude, is an exciting prospect. The approximately 218 kilometres of this gravel route achieve the perfect synthesis of road and MTB riding, placing us most of the time in the heart of the mountain and far from traffic, while allowing us to comfortably borrow parts of asphalt to cross between passes.

In terms of how you travel, there are two ways of attempting the journey. One opts for the comfort of a light bike by selecting hotels along the route (and the half-board that goes with it), the other for a heavier bike but capable of offering us total autonomy and the 100% outdoor experience that goes with it. We did this trail in early October with uncertain weather and opted for the comfort version.

Mont Blanc Tour – Gravel Bike Route

From Chamonix to La Fouly, the Swiss stage.

The reputation of Chamonix as a mountaineering paradise comes from the story that two Englishmen, William Windham and Richard Pococke, tell of the valley they have just visited and mention in particular a gigantic glacier which they baptize the Mer de Glace. This was in 1741. 45 years later, on August 8, 1786, two Chamoniards, Jacques Balmat and Michel Paccard were the first mountaineers to reach the summit of Mont Blanc.

Sadly, the Mer de Glace now looks more like an ice lolly that a kid would have already eaten down to the stick. Global warming has got the better of it. The largest glacier in France retreats 10 metres each year. Being at the foot of this giant and going around it remains an event, and the different glaciers that we see there captivate by their size and their strength.

The morning temperature is not very high when we leave Chamonix in the direction of Le Lavanchet via the paths which in winter form a cross-country ski trail. From Argentière, the tour then leads to the Col des Montets towards Vallorcine, by paved road. The arrival in Chatelard by an alternation of roads and paths marks our arrival in Switzerland. The 13 kilometre climb to Champex Lac which follows the lunch break in Martigny marks the start of a real battle. When we pass the doors of the Auberge in the evening at La Fouly, our counters show 76km and a total ascent of nearly 2600 meters.

Mont Blanc Tour – Gravel Bike Route

La Fouly – Beaufort: one day, three countries.

The most demanding day of the Tour, the first challenge is the Grand Col Ferret at 2537m, which is reached by taking some off-road sectors. This pass marks the border between Switzerland and Italy, offering a remarkable view of the Grande Jorasses in good weather. We crossed it in a thick mist, leaving us with not much to write home about. Dropping down 500m to the Elena refuge on the Italian side required walking beside the bike. The refuge, built shortly before the Second World War, was destroyed by an avalanche in 1960 and was not rebuilt until 1995, which explains its modern construction.

The arrival in Courmayeur presents a typical alpine landscape with all the clichés of torrents spanned by wooden bridges, rustic chalets, green meadows, and sumptuous evergreen forests. This valley experienced intense activity during the 16th century due to its gold mines.

Courmayeur would also take its name from the Latin Curia Mayor (Court of Justice) as law enforcement was needed in the city because of the large number of people who arrived and fought for this gold rush…

We will not linger, the ascent of the Col de Seigne which awaits us is substantial and relatively difficult because of the stony paths which lead to it. The playful descent on the French side, before embarking on the short ascent of the Cormet de Roseland is offered as a reward. The night in Beaufort at the foot of the former Imperial Gendarmerie marks the end of a long and demanding day in and out of the saddle.

Mont Blanc Tour – Gravel Bike Route

Beaufort – Chamonix: on the slopes

The shortest of our stages on the Tour but demanding for the long ascent of the Col du Joly (22km +1250m). We start the day at a thunderous pace and due to the very steep slopes of more than 26% we are already cooked as we reach the Voza pass. Here we encounter a view of the Aiguille de Bionnassay which rises to 4052 metres, just under four kilometres west of Mont Blanc.

The descents on the ski slopes on the Contamines side require you to stay focused, here too you would see yourself having more success on a full suspension mountain bike. Hikers who climb the slopes on this sunny Sunday seemed intrigued to see us tumble down on these loaded bikes. The 10km on the banks of the Arve mark the last part of this extraordinary journey and the salt left by perspiration on our jerseys and shorts attests to these three days of effort in a place that is both mythical and sublime.

Gravel Tour du Mont Blanc: Beauty and pain in the Alps

The French Alps and its ‘cols’ are well known by all cycling enthusiasts. Many of these passes rise above 2.000 m and just a few above the 2.500 m, such as la Bonette or le Galibier. This is the case if you stick to road cycling but, what would happen if you rode a gravel bike? The answer is quite straightforward; the number of possibilities increases exponentially. With this idea in mind, Nicolas Roux envisioned a new gravel adventure following the concept behind the road race ‘ Le Tour du Mont Blanc Cyclo ’ and the ultra-trail race ‘ UTMB ’ but, this time, on gravel bikes through trails, singletracks, and forgotten roads. With this, on the first weekend of September 2022, the inaugural edition of Le Gravel Tour du Mont Blanc ( GTMB ) will take place in Megève (France), offering its participants an extraordinary opportunity to discover the surroundings of the white mountain and put themselves through a very tough ride.

tour mont blanc gravel

The organizers designed the course around the idea of making it ‘one of the hardest routes in the world with a distance of 200 km’. Throughout this distance, the riders will have to climb eight spectacular passes, with two ascents above 2.500 m at le Col de la Seigne and le Grand Col Ferret, adding up to a total elevation gain of 8.500 m.

The route will alternate between country roads and gravel paths, including singletracks, forest trails, and hike-a-bike sections in an everchanging environment passing through three countries: France, Italy, and Switzerland. They will ride through the rooftops of Europe, between glaciers, creeks, valleys, and alpine mountains offering the opportunity to challenge themselves in a unique, fragile, and demanding territory of breathtaking landscapes.

tour mont blanc gravel

In addition, being in high-mountain conditions means that temperature and weather can definitely play a huge role during the race, as it may drastically change from one minute to the other, from dense mist to blazing sun. Therefore, not only will a solid physical shape be essential, but also an excellent technical skillset as the riders will ride through mountain paths most of the time, and good technical equipment.

The main race is designed to be a solo ride loop from Megève in which you will have no assistance during the 200 km and 8.500 m of elevation gain. The start will be on Saturday 3rd early in the morning before sunrise and the participants will have time till Sunday 4th at noon. To make the race more popular, there is also the option to ride in pairs.

Moreover, for those who want to participate but do not feel strong enough, there is the chance to take a slightly shorter parcours of around 100 km that will start from Courmayeur and finish in Megève. Even though it will be shorter, it does not mean it will be easy as the participants of the Half-GTMB will have to climb a total of 5.000 m. Furthermore, during this weekend dedicated to gravel, a 70 km and 2.700 m non-competitive ride, the Gravel Tour du Mont Joly, will take place on Sunday morning from Megève.

tour mont blanc gravel

The overall organization of the event will be in the hands of Wish One , a French brand that will also take care of the first round of the UCI Gravel World Series in France in 2022. Thus, they will certainly put together a great weekend of rough gravel racing in an unforgettable environment of pure nature and wild landscapes. Registration starts on January 1st, 2022.

What's a gravel bike ?

If you landed here, chances are high that you are already familiar with this kind of bike.

Gravel biking, even if it only got recently trendy, has a long history. Long before pavement became the norm in the developped world, cyclist would ride with regular bikes, on whatever kind of road they would find. That was gravel riding before it even got a name.

Nowadays, thanks to the work of all the manufacturers of bikes and groupsets, some specificities are making gravel biking more comfortable, and more efficient. With tough single ring   drivetrains , the mechanic is more reliable, and the geometry of the bikes are making them much easier to handle on tricky terrain. Last but not least, the wider tires are conticuting massively to the comfort on uneven terrain, and the hydraulic brakes makes riding much safer.

For this trip, we advise you to come with a gravel bike that is light, comfortable, and recently serviced, with these characteristics: hydraulic brakes 160/140mm, single ring 36 or 38,11-42 cassette, tubeless wheels with 40, 45 or even 47mm gravel specific tires.

If you have any question aboiut the gear, just get in touch !

Bikepacking and Autonomy

Even though will will stay and get our food from hotels and mountains huts, the spirit of this trip is autonomy, as we believe in the joy of human powered adventures!

We will not have any following car to carry our gear, clothing and so on.

This will have two consequences:

  • smart packing : as light as possible, only the necessary! Check the packing list below
  • carrying system: saddle, fram and handlebar bags. There is a wide choice of light and watertight bags. Backpack is a posibility, but it makes the riding less comfortable so we advise you to avoid it.

From secret roads to hike-a-bike

A gravel bike is a fantastic tool for all kind of riding, and it's versatility makes it as good to ride on paved roads than on some hiking trails.

During this trip, we will be sometimes on asphalt roads. Not the big ones with heavy traffic obviously, but the smaller, almost secret ones where there are no to very few cars.

The proper gravel parts will be a mix of wide gravel roads and single tracks. The TMB, Tour du Mont-Blanc, is a popular hiking trail, and has been extremely well maintained. The singletracks are clean and easy to ride, most of the time.

Getting closer to the high cols, on a few moments we will have to push or carry our bikes. It will never be long and painful, just a necessary effort to reach more good cycling! This is one more reason to travel light...

This One Breathtaking Trail Made Rick Steves Fall In Love With Hiking

snowy peaks and valleys in Alps

European adventure expert Rick Steves is all about having authentic experiences while traveling . Despite this, he admitted in a 2021 interview with Outside Magazine that his European escapades never involved a popular outdoor activity: hiking. That was until he hiked the Tour du Mont Blanc. If you're unfamiliar with this trail, brace yourself. The Tour du Mont Blanc spans 103 miles and traverses France, Italy, and Switzerland. Additionally, it features an elevation gain of over 30,000 feet.

Speaking to Outside Magazine, Steves said he decided to hike the Tour du Mont Blanc because he was overworked. Ultimately, hiking was life-changing for him, saying, "What I like is the rhythm of my feet on the trail." Steves added, "It's therapeutic. It's a delightful experience for my body and my soul." Completing the Tour du Mont Blanc can take nearly two weeks.

The hike starts and ends in Chamonix, a hidden gem for outdoor adventures in the French Alps. Along the way, hikers stay in mountain lodges or huts and dine on local fare. Those who decide to take on the journey are met with unforgettable mountain scenery, landscapes, and memories. Steves, who was in his 60s when he hiked the trail, told Outside Magazine that anyone else could too if he did.

Rick Steves' advice for hiking the Tour du Mont Blanc

Rick Steves did not complete the Tour du Mont Blanc in its entirety, nor did he do it alone. Instead, he and three others hiked 60 miles of the trail from Chamonix and back. Nevertheless, this was a challenging feat. On his blog, Rick Steves' Europe , he wrote, "Each day, we'd hike what the trail signs said would be a five-hour hike — that took us six or seven. Our mantra: "Take our time. This is why we're here." Generally, the day would start at a 3,000-foot climb to a pass (or "col") 8,000 feet above sea level."

However, he did acknowledge that they had some help. One of Steves' best travel tips for hiking the Tour du Mont Blanc is to hire a luggage transfer service. This way, you won't have to carry all your gear as you hike. Instead, when you arrive, it'll be at your mountain lodge each day. In a video uploaded to this YouTube channel, Steves revealed that hikers can expect to traverse 10 miles daily.

In his blog, the travel expert wrote that he prepped by hiking before the trip in his home state of Washington and advised others to do the same. Some other things to consider: Although meals are provided to hikers staying at mountain lodges, Steves' said (via YouTube ) that hikers are not given a choice on what they dine on but did note that the food was delicious. He also expressed the importance of hydration while hiking.

How you can hike the Tour du Mont Blanc

Rick Steves has gone on to feature the Tour du Mont Blanc in his PBS Show "Rick Steves' Europe." Understandably, he believes this is a must-do for travelers. If you want to hike the Tour du Mont Blanc, do so between June and September for optimal weather conditions. While you can plan a hike on your own, there are several details to consider, including booking mountain lodges, luggage transfer service, flights, and more.

The best way to get to Chamonix is to fly to Geneva, Switzerland. From there, you can take a brief bus or train ride. Either option will take you to Chamonix in about two hours. Tour du Mont Blanc hiking expert Troy Haines told Outside Magazine that travelers should book their hiking trip at least 10 months in advance. That said, if you prefer to take a guided hike or need assistance planning your trip, book a tour.

Alpine Hikers is one of many tour operators that offer guided hikes on Tour du Mont Blanc. The trips last 11 days and begin in Chamonix, from where hikers proceed to Italy and Switzerland. At the time of this publication, the cost is $5,995 per person. Accommodations, meals, and luggage transfers are included.

Fun facts from our Moscow Metro Tours:

From the very first days of its existence, the Moscow Metro was the object of civil defense, used as a bomb shelter, and designed as a defense for a possible attack on the Soviet Union.

At a depth of 50 to 120 meters lies the second, the coded system of Metro-2 of Moscow subway, which is equipped with everything you need, from food storage to the nuclear button.

According to some sources, the total length of Metro-2 reaches over 150 kilometers.

The Museum was opened on Sportivnaya metro station on November 6, 1967. It features the most interesting models of trains and stations.

Coffee Ring

The first scheme of Moscow Metro looked like a bunch of separate lines. Listen to a myth about Joseph Stalin and the main brown line of Moscow Metro.

Zodiac Metro

According to some astrologers, each of the 12 stops of the Moscow Ring Line corresponds to a particular sign of the zodiac and divides the city into astrological sector.

Astrologers believe that being in a particular zadiac sector of Moscow for a long time, you attract certain energy and events into your life.

Paleontological finds

Red marble walls of some of the Metro stations hide in themselves petrified inhabitants of ancient seas. Try and find some!

  • Every day each car in  Moscow metro passes  more than 600 km, which is the distance from Moscow to St. Petersburg.
  • Moscow subway system is the  5th in the intensity  of use (after the subways of Beijing, Tokyo, Seoul and Shanghai).
