Hilton Head Island: 2024 First-Timer’s Guide

  • HILTON HEAD , LOWCOUNTRY
  • by Erin Clarkson

Peaceful sunset in pale pink, yellow, and blue hues on Hilton Head Island

Hilton Head Island is one of the most popular vacation destinations in the South Carolina Lowcountry — and for good reason!

The island has clean beaches, loads of incredible seafood restaurants, golf courses galore, and plenty of family-friendly outdoor activities.

Hilton Head is also a great place to take a multi-generational family vacation, since the island has a little something to suit every age group.

I’m going to attempt to cover all the main points you need to know if you’re planning your first trip to the island. Although I live in nearby Savannah, Georgia , my parents have owned a place on HHI since I was in my teens (and my grandfather did before them — in the old Lawton Beach area), so I guess you could say I’m pretty familiar with it!

Ready? Let’s get to it!

If you’re new around here, first of all … allow me to extend a warm welcome!

My name is Erin, and I authored the  Savannah First-Timer’s Guide . It combines my most helpful Savannah travel tips from this website into one handy downloadable guide.

Table of Contents

Hilton Head, S.C.

The most popular time to visit Hilton Head Island is during the summertime, but spring and fall aren’t too far behind. In fact, the island reaches near capacity each year in April when the RBC Heritage event takes place!

Hilton Head is popular during the winter months, too, thanks to snowbirds who visit to escape cold and snowy climates.

In fact, I won’t be too surprised to see the island filled with people year round at some point in the near future. (It’s already getting that way.)

One thing to keep in mind when you’re planning a visit is that Atlantic hurricane season kicks into high gear late in August. Storm chances stay pretty high throughout September and into October.

The threat dies down as the storm season comes to an end in November.

Still, if you plan a visit anytime between mid-August to mid-October, I suggest purchasing travel insurance for hurricanes , just to be on the safe side.

Additional Important Considerations

There are a few important considerations to factor in when you’re planning a trip to Hilton Head. While none of these are necessarily deal-breakers, I still want to mention them.

  • If you’re traveling by car, there is currently only one way on and off the island. Thankfully, the bridge is divided into four lanes (two in each direction), so your chances of getting stuck on the island for extended periods of time aren’t too bad.
  • Most of the time-share rentals on the island use Saturday as their check-in/check-out day. That means traffic coming and going during peak tourism season can cause a bit of a gridlock on Saturdays — especially during the midday hours.
  • Hilton Head’s beaches get really dark at night! This is by design, and it’s done to protect endangered loggerhead sea turtles that nest on the island. That’s great because it means the island has very little light pollution and you can easily see the stars, but it’s not ideal for late-night walks on the beach.

Savannah to Hilton Head

The most common way to get to Hilton Head from Savannah is by car.

Depending on which route you take, the distance between Savannah and Hilton Head varies between 30 to 45 miles. I suggest budgeting an hour and a half worth of driving time.

You can drive along I-95, but I prefer taking the scenic route through Bluffton. To do so, you’ll leave Savannah heading west on Oglethorpe Avenue, cross over the Talmadge Bridge on HWY 17 into South Carolina, and then veer right onto Okatie HWY.

From there, you’ll cross through a roundabout to May River Road, which goes straight through the Old Town section of Bluffton. You’ll see lots of beautiful old oaks along that route!

Exit left on Burnt Church Road and then right on Bluffton Parkway. The parkway spills onto HWY 278, which leads straight to Hilton Head Island.

You could also opt for Uber or Lyft, but a quick glance at their fare estimators tells me it’ll cost you roughly $100 each way to do so.

Renting a car via Turo or Discover Cars is another option.

Hilton Head Parking

The parking in most (not all) of the public beach access areas on Hilton Head Island is free, so you don’t need to allot a large budget for parking.

(That’s just one of many reasons why I prefer Hilton Head to Tybee Island, Georgia .)

Map of Hilton Head

If you look at a map of Hilton Head, you’ll notice the island is shaped like a foot.

Think of the north end of the island (where the heel would be) as a quiet, residential area. Many of the homes in that area are large, higher-end homes, and the beaches are in more of a natural state.

The middle portion of the island (where the arch of the foot would be) is where the majority of the hotels and public beach access points are located.

The southern end of the island (where the ball of the foot and the toe section would be) is where Sea Pines Resort and Sea Pines Forest Preserve are located. That area is also home to Harbour Town Golf Club and the Harbour Town Marina and Lighthouse.

Although beaches in the Sea Pines area are public, the majority of the land along that southern tip of the island is reserved for Sea Pines members and guests. I’d say that area is more exclusive.

There are plenty of hotel options throughout the island, but I’ll split them up by section and will list a few of the most popular ones in each area.

Hotels on the north end of the island:

  • The Westin Resort & Spa | Oceanfront ( ⭐ 8.1)

Popular hotels in the mid-beach area:

  • Sonesta Resort ( ⭐ 8) | Oceanfront
  • Omni Hilton Head ( ⭐ 8.4) | Oceanfront

Popular hotels in the Sea Pines area:

  • The Inn & Club at Harbour Town ( ⭐ 9.4) | Luxurious, golf-front property
  • Marriott’s Heritage Club ( ⭐ 8.8) |
  • Marriott Monarch at Sea Pines ( ⭐ 8.9) | Oceanfront

Hilton Head Home Rentals

If you’ve followed my blog for any length of time, then you probably know I’ve taken a firm stance against short-term rentals within Savannah’s city limits.

It shouldn’t surprise anyone to learn I feel the same way about Hilton Head. Here’s a bit of the backstory to explain why…

  • When the bridge to Hilton Head was built in the 1950s, it opened the floodgates for developers to come onto the island and begin buying up as much land as possible.
  • During that process, those developers displaced thousands of Gullah families who had been living on land their ancestors bought or inherited at the end of the Civil War.
  • In many instances, when developers obtained the land from the Gullah people, they did so through deceptive practices — which meant Gullah heirs rarely received a fair price for their land.
  • Once the developers seized the land, they stripped it, constructed new accommodations, and then marketed those properties as luxury resorts.
  • The newly-constructed resort properties attracted wealthy — and primarily white — families to purchase properties on Hilton Head, thus shifting the demographics of the island. The percentage of African Americans residing on the island was nearly 100% in the 1920 census and had shifted to less than 6% by the 2020 census .

Why I Don’t Support Home Rentals on HHI

I understand that many readers prefer renting an entire home on the island vs. staying in a hotel — and I totally get that! Sometimes it just makes more sense to rent a home when you’re traveling as a large group.

VRBO currently lists thousands of home rentals scattered throughout every section of the island, and those properties are offered in a variety of price points.

The primary reason I don’t recommend home rentals on HHI is because the short-term rental market is (one of many issues) causing property taxes to increase so exponentially that many of the few remaining Gullah homeowners on the island are being priced out of their homes.

These families are losing their ancestral land at an alarming rate — with only a few hundred estimated acres of Gullah-owned land remaining on Hilton Head Island (that number used to be in the thousands).

If you reserve your home rental through either of the VRBO links in this section, 100% of those commissions will be donated to this Fighting Injustice on Hilton Head fundraiser.

I realize that’s only a short-term solution, but it’s the best I can think of at the moment.

Things To Do in Hilton Head

When it comes to things to do on Hilton Head Island, the list is a long one.

Of course, most families will want to spend their days on the beach, but that’s not the only option. Hilton Head is also known for its award-winning golf courses and 60+ miles of paved bike trails.

If you’re not into golfing, biking, or swimming, here are some other great options to keep you busy:

  • Go on a sunset dolphin cruise
  • Take a stroll through Sea Pines Forest Preserve
  • Visit Coastal Discovery Museum
  • Explore the Gullah Heritage Trail
  • Visit Michelville Freedom Park
  • Catch fireworks and live music at Shelter Cove
  • Challenge yourself to a round of mini-golf at Adventure Cove
  • Visit Harbour Town Marina and climb the Harbour Town Lighthouse
  • Go shopping at Coligny Plaza
  • Catch a sunset at Shelter Cove Community Park

Finally, if you want to spot some alligators in the wild, you can do just that during gator mating season (late spring) in many of Hilton Head’s parks — Jarvis Creek Park is a good one — or you can head off the island to visit nearby Pinkney Island National Wildlife Rescue .

Hilton Head Restaurants

There are a couple conglomerates that have a monopoly on the top restaurants in Hilton Head. The SERG Group is probably the biggest monopoly. They own quite a few restaurants that are very popular amongst tourists.

Here are a few of their most popular spots:

  • Skull Creek Boathouse
  • Skull Creek Dockside
  • Frankie Bones (my personal fave)
  • Black Marlin
  • Guiseppi’s

A few additional hotspots on the island (that SERG doesn’t own) include Bullies Barbecue, Old Oyster Factory, Fish Camp, Ela’s on the Water, Hinoki (my personal favorite), Hudson’s Seafood, Charlie’s L’Etoile Verte (aka: Charlie’s Coastal Bistro), and Coast.

If you like Jamaican food, I suggest visiting Red Stripes Caribbean Cuisine, which is located at 840 William Hilton Parkway. It’s a Gullah-owned establishment.

In short, there are plenty of places to eat on the island! You can also drive off island to try some of the restaurants lining US 278. Bluffton has excellent restaurants, too.

Hilton Head Beaches

Hilton Head Island has approximately 12 miles of beaches. Roughly half are ocean facing and the rest look out over the back rivers and inlets.

There’s no such thing as a “private beach” on Hilton Head.

All of Hilton Head Island’s beaches are public from the point where the ocean meets the sand to the high-water mark.

You can be asked to leave if you step off the beach onto a resort or a homeowner’s private property, or if you are breaking beach rules (littering, damaging the dunes, drinking alcohol, etc), but otherwise, the beaches are meant to be enjoyed by all.

From north to south, these are a few of the most well known public beaches and/or access points:

  • Mitchelville Beach | Quiet, better for walking than swimming
  • Folly Field Beach | Ideal for families
  • Bradley Beach | Ideal for families
  • Burke’s Beach | Ideal for families
  • Coligny Beach | Most popular, lots of amenities nearby

The beach area around the Alder Lane Access area and Coligny Park is typically referred to as “Coligny Beach,” and it’s generally the most populated beach on the island. Mitchelville Beach (aka: Fish Haul Beach) is the most remote and quietest of the popular beaches.

Savannah To Hilton Head, SC

Harbour Town Lighthouse and marina at Hilton Head Island, SC.

Hilton Head, around 30 miles from Savannah and 100 miles from Charleston ( see on map ) is a popular barrier island vacation destination in lower South Carolina.

Most people drive to Hilton Head, but it is also reasonably easy to get to by plane, via nearby Savannah (several options for completing your journey to Hilton Head are available out of Savannah’s airport) or Hilton Head’s own airport, which now receives flights from several US cities.

Less convenient, but still feasible, is travel by train or intercity bus, in both cases requiring a connection from a nearby city (usually, again, Savannah).

Driving To Hilton Head Island

The easiest way to get to Hilton Head Island is to drive. Car rental services are available at Savannah-Hilton Head International Airport or at any other major airport or city, though you may not need a car once on Hilton Head itself unless you plan on sightseeing off the island. Get directions

Approximate distances and driving times from selected regional cities, each way (assuming the traffic is not too bad), are as follows: – From Savannah, GA: 30 miles, 45-60 minutes (or 34 miles from the airport). – From Atlanta, GA: 280 miles, 4hrs-4hrs30. – From Jacksonville, FL: 170 miles, 2hrs30-3hrs. – From Charleston, SC: 100 miles, 2hrs15. – From Charlotte, NC : 250 miles, 4hrs-4hrs40.

Taxi & Ride Share To Hilton Head

If you don’t drive or will not have a car for your visit, a taxi or equivalent service is the easiest way to get to Hilton Head Island.

From Savannah’s airport, there is a flat rate taxi fare of $80 to the north end of the island, and $85 to the south end (excluding tip). Passengers in excess of 2 will attract an additional fare of $10 per extra person. Expect to pay around $110 for a metered fare from Savannah to Hilton Head. See details

Ride-sharing companies Uber and Lyft also serve the Savannah-Hilton Head area, with basic fares starting from around $65 each way. Surge pricing during busy periods can very substantially increase this base fare, however, up to around $180 in a smaller vehicle or up to $280 in an XL vehicle.

Both services can be used directly from Savannah’s airport to Hilton Head, but please note that some of the island’s gated communities charge additional fees for drop-off, and that return journey pick-up may not always be available from within these gated resorts.

Local Taxi & Car Services

Several taxi services and car services operate out of Hilton Head and vicinity, and many more out of Savannah.

Palmetto Car Service provides a higher-end service between Savannah Airport and Hilton Head for $135, 7am-6pm (additional fees apply outside of these hours). Call 843-981-1111 or book online.

Many visitors traveling to Hilton Head still fly to Savannah-Hilton Head International Airport, from which there are several options (taxi, ride share, or rental car) for continuing your journey to Hilton Head.

Charleston & Savannah Itinerary: A Lowcountry Road Trip

' src=

Charleston, South Carolina, and Savannah, Georgia, are two amazing cities to visit in the Southeastern United States. If you’re looking for the perfect Charleston and Savannah itinerary , I’ve put together a plan that will make the most of your time in both cities.

And it includes an optional stop in Hilton Head, South Carolina.

First, you’ll spend two days in Charleston. This city is known for its beautiful architecture, historic downtown area, charming cobblestone streets, and stunning waterfront views.

Then it will be time to move on to Savannah for a couple of days. Founded in 1733 by British colonists, this city oozes history and Southern charm from its historic homes to its famous Riverfront.

Outside the Aiken-Rhett House Museum in Charleston, South Carolina

On the surface, this might not seem like enough time to see everything these two cities have to offer, but with this itinerary, you’ll experience all their highlights.

So pack your bags and get ready for some southern charm.

How to spend two days in Charleston

Charleston, South Carolina, is a beautiful place and has so many great activities that it’s one of our favorite places to visit.

Charleston is a top travel destination in the American South and should not be missed by anyone who wants to explore more of this part of the United States.

Charleston, formerly Charles Town, is not only the biggest city in South Carolina but also a leading travel destination.

It oozes Old South history and charm as well as being a great food travel destination.

And while a lot of the city’s history is unpleasant, Charleston has come a long way toward making sure that the stories of enslaved people are being told.

Day 1: Charleston

On your first day in Charleston, after you’ve eaten a hearty breakfast, I recommend exploring two of the Holy City’s significant historical sites: Aiken-Rhett House and Fort Sumter National Monument.

Aiken-Rhett house

Aiken-Rhett House was once the home of Governor and Mrs. William Aiken Jr. From 1864 – 1866, William Aiken Jr. was the 61st governor of South Carolina.

While Nathaniel Russell House (nearer The Battery in lower Charleston) is a popular site that has been beautifully restored , if you’re looking for a historic Charleston home that’s been carefully preserved , I recommend you tour Aiken-Rhett House.

Aiken-Rhett House has been called “the most intact townhouse complex showcasing urban life in antebellum Charleston” by the National Trust for Historic Preservation .

In the back of the house, there are quarters where many enslaved people used to live and die. Although it may be difficult to see, it is important to remember their lives.

Fort Sumter National Monument

Fort Sumter is primarily known as the site of the outbreak of the American Civil War. Confederate forces shelled the fort on April 12, 1861, beginning four years of bloody conflict.

The only way to get to Fort Sumter is by boat as it sits on a man-made island in Charleston Harbor.

You’ll want to book your tickets ahead of time online through Fort Sumter Tours the National Park Service’s official vendor for these tickets.

Be sure to attend the National Park Service ranger’s history talk while inside the fort. You won’t be disappointed. It’s excellently done and provides concise historical context for what you’ll be seeing as you walk about the grounds.

More things to do in Charleston

Here are some other popular activities you might like to do on your first day in Charleston. They all include free 24-hour cancellation.

Carriage rides like this one are a very popular thing to do in Charleston.

You might also enjoy this very highly-rated historical walking tour .

Or explore Charleston’s culinary scene with this small group food tour .

PRO TIP: If you have flexible travel dates you need to check out Going (formerly Scott’s Cheap Flights). You get amazing flight deals sent straight to your inbox with instructions on how to book directly with the airlines. Check out Going here. Going is my favorite way to find great travel deals.

Day 2: Charleston

Stroll along The Battery

Be sure to visit The Battery on your second day in Charleston. It’s called The Battery because of the coastal defense artillery battery that used to be located there.

The Battery is located on the lower Charleston peninsula, where you’ll find a seawall promenade perfect for a morning walk. If you’re looking to enjoy some shade and escape the heat, take a stroll through White Point Garden.

If you’re looking to explore some true Charleston architecture, take a stroll around The Battery and check out all of the beautiful homes. From the outside of course. Don’t go knocking on doors that would be weird.

You’re sure to have a blast enjoying your gorgeous surroundings.

Beautiful houses along the Battery in Charleston

Visit the historic Charleston City Market

The four-city-block-long Charleston City Market is considered by many to be a “must-do” in Charleston.

At the market in downtown Charleston, you’ll have fun browsing through all of the different stalls. You can find anything from intricately designed art pieces by local artists to time-honored classics like sweetgrass baskets, which have been made in Charleston for hundreds of years.

It’s a wonderful place to explore and find some great souvenirs to take away with you to remember your visit to Charleston.

Fountain with a large pineapple on top in waterfront park in Charleston, South Carolina.

Waterfront Park

In this beautiful stretch of waterfront is where you’ll find Charleston’s iconic Pineapple Fountain, a top photo spot in the city.

This is the perfect place to take a brief break and simply enjoy your time in Charleston.

For excellent views of the harbor and Arthur Ravenel Jr. Bridge, take a short walk out on the pier. If you want to relax in a serene setting, there are also some lovely bench swings where you can sit down and enjoy the breeze on a warm day.

Day trips from Charleston

If you’re interested in exploring some of the beautiful sights that the South Carolina lowcountry has to offer, consider taking a day trip away from Charleston or even for just an afternoon.

There are plenty of amazing places to visit just a short drive away from the city.

Magnolia Plantation

The Magnolia Plantation is one of the most popular day trips from Charleston. Founded by the Drayton family in 1676, it is one of the oldest public tourist destinations and gardens in the Lowcountry region.

Visitors can view the romantic-style gardens with thousands of flowers and plants or take one of the many tours on offer.

Boone Hall Plantation

large plantation house beyond a wrought iron gate

Boone Hall Plantation in Mount Pleasant, South Carolina, is one of America’s oldest working farms and has been recognized as the number one plantation in the Charleston area by USA TODAY 10Best.

Not only is the plantation stunning, but it also has a rich history. It was founded by English General John Boone in 1861.

Folly Beach

There’s nothing quite like a beach day to relax and reset. At just 20 minutes away from Charleston, Folly Beach on Folly Island is the perfect place to do so.

This barrier island off the coast of Charleston is popular with locals and visitors alike who enjoy swimming, fishing, kayaking, and spending time in nature surrounded by wildlife.

Where to eat in Charleston

Interior of Carmella's Dessert Bar in Charleston, South Carolina

Charleston, South Carolina, is a popular foodie destination.

Consider taking a food tour like this to get expert guidance on the best places to eat and the best local dishes to try.

(Hushpuppies. The best local dish to try is hushpuppies.)

  • Vicious Biscuit (great gluten-free options; get there before they open on weekends)
  • Page’s Okra Grill
  • Fleet Landing (separate gluten-free and vegetarian menus)
  • Carmella’s Dessert Bar (a perfect place for coffee or a sweet treat)

Where to stay in Charleston

Charleston has no shortage of wonderful hotels to stay in.

Here are a few top-rated options:

Andrew Pinckney Inn —This quaint 41-room hotel is nestled only a few blocks from the Charleston City Market. Check availability here .

The Dewberry —luxurious accommodations bordering Marion Square, near fine dining and shopping on King Street. Use one of the Dewberry Volvo guests cars or try one of the complimentary bicycles to get around town. Check out their rates today .

Budget-friendly Option: Doubletree Mount Pleasant —we had a lovely and budget-friendly stay at this hotel which was just a few minutes outside Charleston. Look at room options here.

Optional trip extension to Hilton Head Island, South Carolina

A little over 100 miles from Charleston and just about 40 miles from downtown Savannah, you’ll find lovely Hilton Head Island, South Carolina.

Hilton Head makes a great stop if you want to extend your Charleston and Savannah itinerary and explore more of the low country.

It’s also my favorite weekend getaway from Charleston .

People on a Hilton Head Island beach in the sun

You can spend the day at the beach, visit Coligny Beach Park with its nearby shopping center, or check out Harbour Town (there’s a day pass fee), and the lighthouse.

We loved our stay at the Marriott Hilton Head Resort & Spa , which is right on the beach.

So you’ll definitely want to book a room with a balcony. We think it’s worth the extra money to wake up to this…

Things to do in Savannah

Genteel & bard history tour.

I highly recommend taking a historic walking tour in Savannah if you want to get to know the city better.

And I can recommend the Genteel & Bard tour without reservation . T.C. Michaels is an outstanding and friendly guide. And a great storyteller.

He truly brought the city to life, from its planning and founding then up to the present. (And where does all that energy come from?)

This tour will most definitely make you appreciate Savannah more as well as the people who worked so hard to preserve it for future generations to enjoy.

They also offer a dark history and ghost tour which is quite popular.

River Street

River Street in Savannah Georgia

Iconic River Street is a popular tourist destination in Savannah known for its charming architecture and lively nightlife. You really shouldn’t miss it.

The street runs along the Savannah River and is home to a variety of restaurants and shops.

It’s a great place to spend an evening out with friends or family.

I do have to admit it is a rather touristy area, but that doesn’t mean you shouldn’t take a stroll down it once or twice especially if it’s your first time in Savannah.

Be advised that Savannah does have an open container policy, so there will be people walking around (especially at night) with alcoholic beverages.

Waving Girl Statue

Waving Girl Statue in Savannah Georgia in the fall

As long as you’re on River Street make sure to step over to the famous Waving Girl statue in Morrell Park.

The statue honors Florence Martus who greeted each ship entering or leaving Savannah for 44 years by waving a handkerchief or a lantern at night.

According to legend, she did this because as a young girl she had fallen in love with a sailor and she was trying to make sure he could find her, but there doesn’t appear to be any historical evidence to support this notion.

Forsyth Park

Large fountain in a park in Savannah Georgia

There’s a quite well-known fountain in Savannah, and you’ll find it in Forsyth Park (2 W Gaston St).

Forsyth is 30 acres of walking paths, gardens, sports courts and fields, a half-shell theatre, and more.

It’s truly a beautiful park and well worth a visit.

Cathedral Basilica of St. John the Baptist

In addition to looking for all the best art when we travel, we enjoy visiting historical and prominent places of worship.

The Cathedral Basilica of St. John the Baptist is a stunning example of French Gothic architecture and one of the most popular tourist destinations in Savannah, Georgia.

The church was dedicated in 1876. It’s also home to some amazing stained glass windows.

St. John the Baptist is open for visitors (self-guided tour). They suggest a $3 per adult cash donation.

Cathedral of St. John the Baptist exterior in Savannah, Georgia

Leopold’s Ice Cream

A scoop at Leopold’s is a “must-do” in Savannah for me.

Expect lines out the door if you visit Savannah during high season.

Leopold’s has been a Savannah institution for more than 100 years. They’re probably most famous for their Tutti Frutti ice cream.

I tried the Savannah Socialite which is chocolate ice cream with Georgia pecans and bourbon caramel. It. Was. Delicious.

Try a cruise on the Savannah River

Would you rather be on the river rather than just have a view from shore? Try this narrated river cruise .

See Savannah by trolley

Trolley tours are a popular way to get around and see Savannah. You’ll learn about the city and get a good overview.

Here are a few popular options;

This Savannah Old Town Trolley Tour will show you dozens and dozens of Savannah’s top sites and points of interest while you learn about its history.

This History and Sightseeing Trolley Tour will guide you through Savannah’s 270 year history in 90 minutes.

Or try a full-day hop-on and hop-off trolley ticket so you can learn more about Savannah while you explore at your leisure.

Where to Stay in Savannah

Luxury: The Eliza Thompson House is an inn rich in history that’s situated near Forsyth Park and its well-known fountain.

Moderate: If you’re looking for a great view of both the historic Savannah Riverfront and the steamboats that travel along it, look no further than Marriott Savannah Riverfront !

Affordable: Holiday Inn Express Savannah – Historic District offers comfortable and affordable rooms just steps from historic River Street.

Hotel room with a view of the Savannah River

Day trips from Savannah

Extend your itinerary and explore more of Georgia outside of Savannah.

Tybee Island

The most popular day trip from Savannah is Tybee Island, which boasts the oldest and tallest light station in Georgia. The 2.5-mile-long barrier island’s strategic location at the mouth of the Savannah River also made it an important military outpost.

Although Tybee Island is quite close to Savannah, you could easily spend an entire day exploring there.

To explore the island, you can of course drive yourself there, or you could book a sightseeing tour like this one that includes a dolphin-watching cruise.  Or perhaps just enjoy a day relaxing on a Tybee Island beach complete with beach chairs, umbrellas, and coolers stocked with ice.

Historic Tybee Island Light Station near Savannah, Georgia

Fort Pulaski National Monument

Also quite close to the historic center of Savannah, Fort Pulaski National Monument is located on Cockspur Island. The National Park Service operates Fort Pulaski, which is open every day except for Thanksgiving, Christmas, and New Year’s Day.

The fort was built to protect the Port of Savannah not long before the American Civil War broke out in 1861. The fort was made mostly of brick (millions and millions of bricks) and was soon rendered obsolete when the Union Army used Fort Pulaski as the site for their testing of their new rifled cannons.

Fort Pulaski fell to the Union Army in less than two days. The fort was then used by the Union Army as a prisoner-of-war camp.

Fort McAllister State Park

Continuing on the Civil War historical site theme, south of Savannah you’ll find Fort McAllister State Park on the banks of the Ogeechee River.

Now don’t dismiss this park out of hand even if you’ve been to both Fort Sumter in Charleston, South Carolina, and Fort Pulaski (see above), because these Confederate fortifications are earthworks and some of the best-preserved.

Fort McAllister held its ground during multiple naval bombardments but was eventually conquered by General Sherman during his army’s ‘March to the Sea.’ The site was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1970.

If you’re looking to spend more than a day at the park, you can choose between staying in a cottage or renting a campsite. The 1700-acre park includes everything from picnic shelters and a museum to boat ramps and fishing piers.

With 4 miles of hiking trails, canoe, kayak, and paddleboard rentals (seasonal), bike rentals, and educational programs available, there’s plenty to do here.

Keeping the Gullah culture alive in the South Carolina Lowcountry.

In this week's "Lowcountry Living," we're showing you how a Hilton Head woman is doing just that by expanding the Gullah Museum.

The little blue house at 12 Georgianna Drive has been on Hilton Head Since 1930 and is now the only restored Gullah home on the island.

It was restored in 2010 and turned into the Gullah Museum, attracting visitors from all over the U.S. and Canada.

“What I’m trying to do, I’m trying to keep it alive here on Hilton Head. That’s my calling," Louise Cohen, founder and director of the Gullah Museum of Hilton Head Island, said.

After having to shut down for two years during the pandemic, Cohen is now working to expand the museum with renovations and new attractions, one of which is a wooden, handmade, flat-bottom boat.

“That is how my ancestors escaped from slavery from Rose Hill Plantation. My great-great-grandparents escaped in a little old bateau. So that’s the story that that’s telling," Cohen said.

The museum has a replica of the bateau, handmade by a Bluffton man.

“I’m so proud of them, with the skills that they have, because they brought it with them from Africa. When they came to America, they brought Africa to America. So they brought all that knowledge. All that came over on the ship with them," Cohen said.

She hopes every visitor who comes to see the little blue house leaves with a new appreciation for the Gullah culture.

“What I want people to take away from here is the knowledge of the people, what the people stand for, what life on Hilton Head Island means to these people," Cohen said.

Sanctuary saved: South Carolina family's fight for ancestral land comes to an end after settlement: Reports

travel savannah to hilton head

A South Carolina family has reached a settlement after countersuing a real estate developer to keep land they’ve owned since after the Civil War, according to reports.

The family’s matriarch, Josephine Wright, lived on the property for at least 30 years , many of which were spent with her husband, attorney Samuel Wright, until he died in 1998.

Wright herself died in January at 94 years old, but not before putting up a fight to ensure that children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren and more could continue to gather and celebrate on their family’s land.

The property was a staple in her late husband’s family since the end of the Civil War . An enslaved person who had been freed purchased the property, according to South Carolina Public Radio .

The battle for the land began when developer Bailey Point Investment, LLC acquired land surrounding Wright's 1.8-acre property in 2014.

The company is developing a 147-home subdivision in the area and at some point offered to buy Wright's property for $39,000, she previously told USA TODAY.

Bailey Point Investment kicked off their developments in 2022 and worked both around and on her property, Wright previously told USA TODAY.

They cut down trees and their work caused dust to cover her car and house. She also noted that someone flattened her tires and a snake was hanging in a window.

Homeowner said developer used ‘tactics of intimidation’ to get her to sell

In February 2023, Bailey Point Investment sued Wright and argued that her screened-in porch, shed and satellite dish were creating a nuisance, lowering property values and throwing a wrench in their plans.

In the lawsuit, the developer said the shed, porch and satellite dish "continue to annoy and disturb" the company.

Wright hired a civil rights attorney and countersued. In her own filing, Wright said the developer used "a consistent and constant barrage of tactics of intimidation, harassment, [and] trespass" to get their hands on her property.

Now that a settlement has been reached, Bailey Point Investment, LLC must stop contacting the family about the land, fix her roof, put up a privacy fence and provide landscaping, family spokesperson Altimese Nichole told South Carolina Public Radio.

Community support pours in for widow fighting for her family’s land

In May 2023, Wright’s granddaughter started a GoFundMe to help cover her legal fees, setting a $350,000 goal. Donations poured in and the family raised nearly $368,000. They gained support not only from community members but also celebrities such as Snoop Dogg , who donated $10,000.

Tyler Perry also made plans to build her a five-bedroom home and according to family spokesperson Altimese Nichole, all permits have been secured. They just need a county inspection, according to South Carolina Public Radio.

According to the outlet, the family plans to establish a foundation in their matriarch’s honor to connect families with resources and education on land preservation.

Wright told television station Fox 28 Savannah that her late husband, Samuel, was a lawyer who always advocated for those who didn't have the resources to do so themselves. She viewed her legal filings against Bailey Point Investment, LLC as her chance to speak up as well.

"I consider myself a very quiet person," she told the outlet in October . "I am not an arguer ... This to me is new."

Last summer, Wright told USA TODAY that the entire ordeal was “very stressful.”

“I’m hoping the outcome of this will be that these people will leave us alone and let me keep my property for the sanctuary of my family,” she said at the time.

“This has always been a sanctuary and it is like a home for others who come to visit us. That's what I'm hoping...to have peace of mind and peace of my property."
