Umbria, Italy

Umbria, Italy

The secret is out about Umbria, Italy's green heart. Right in the center of the country, only a couple of hours from Rome, it looks a lot like Tuscany but without the crowds. Expect rolling hills dotted with vineyards and olive groves, Medieval hill towns, and country retreats. Oh and did we mention the food? In particular, Umbria is known for black truffles and artisanal charcuterie. The top towns to visit include Orvieto, Perugia, and Assisi, but it's a good idea to rent a car so you can explore the countryside too.

Where to Stay: Castello di Reschio is a luxury boutique hotel in an 11th century castle owned by a count who also happens to be an architect and designed the exceedingly chic property himself. Vocabolo Moscatelli is a design-centric hotel in a 12th-century monastery in a small town near Perugia.

Vienna, Austria

Forget Paris—Vienna is one of the most beautiful European capitals and if you and your spouse love history and culture, you'll have more than enough to do no matter the season. The Austrian capital consistently ranks as the world's most liveable city and some of the things that make it so liveable (good culture and entertainment, reliable infrastructure) make it a great place to visit too. Between the imperial palaces, myriad art museums, classical concerts, and cozy coffeehouses, it's the perfect destination for a European city break.

Where to Stay: A member of the Leading Hotels of the World, Hotel Sacher Vienna is the city's historic grand dame and home to the original Sacher-torte. For a more modern take on Viennese hospitality, the buzzy new Rosewood Vienna is your best bet.

The Maldives

This island nation ranks among the best honeymoon destinations and one of the best destinations for an anniversary trip . It's no wonder—the beach resorts set on private islands are made for romantic getaways. An African safari is a classic couples trip and one of the best safari destinations is the Serengeti in Tanzania. January through March is calving season for the wildebeest in the southern Serengeti, which will then start moving toward Kenya in a phenomenon known as the Great Migration. But no matter when you visit the Serengeti, you're sure to see plenty of wildlife and unforgettable experiences like a hot air balloon ride over the savannah. For a bit of a beach escape at the end of your safari, add on a few days in Zanzibar.

Where to Stay: Serengeti Bushtops Camp and Roving Bushtops are small boutique camps set within the Serengeti National Park. Meanwhile, Singita Sabora Tented Camp and Singita Sasakwa Lodge are located nearby in the Grumeti Game Reserve, a private concession dedicated to conservation.

For outdoorsy couples who love to spend time in nature and want a bit of a digital detox, Vermont is a great choice. Known as the Green Mountain State, it has plenty of beautiful places to go hiking or skiing in the winter, quaint New England towns, and opportunities to enjoy lake life. Every season brings its own charms, but the fall foliage in Vermont is especially beautiful. And while you might associate all-inclusive resorts with the Caribbean, one of the country's best all-inclusive hotels is located in Barnard, Vermont.

Where to Stay: Twin Farms in Barnard is an all-inclusive Relais & Châteaux resort where you can explore the trails, picnic by the pond, and go fishing or foraging. The Woodstock Inn & Resort in the quaint town of Woodstock oozes historic New England charm.

Portugal's second largest city has much of the same charm as Lisbon, but is a bit less crowded. In this hilly city, you'll enjoy spotting azulejos (the traditional tiles that cover Portuguese buildings), sampling Portuguese cuisine, strolling along the banks of the Douro River, and touring historic port cellars like Graham's Lodge, where the British royal family's port wine is aged. It's also a good jumping off point to visit the scenic Douro Valley wine region.

Where to Stay: To be in the center of everything, Maison Albar Hotels - Le Monumental Palace is a great choice. This member of the Leading Hotels of the World has fantastic service, a Michelin-starred restaurant, and a wonderful spa. Expect beautiful beaches, quaint Sino-Portuguese architecture in the main town, fantastic food, and legendary nightlife. Many couples combine Phuket with a few days in Bangkok and perhaps a mountain destination like Chiang Mai.

Over the past few years, it's become a destination for art world insiders (a James Turrell Skyspace was inaugurated in 2021). It's also a good base for day trips to places like Punta del Este and Garzón, where you can visit the award-winning Bodega Garzón winery and dine at one of celebrity chef Francis Mallmann's restaurants.

Ever since Donald Judd moved here in the 1970s and created the Chinati Foundation on an old army base, the town has attracted an artsy crowd. Many little galleries have popped up around town and it might be the only place in the U.S. where hipsters rub elbows with cowboys at dive bars like the Lost Horse Saloon. It's also close to Big Bend National Park, so it would be easy to combine art-spotting in Marfa with a hiking trip.

The best vacation spots for couples are steeped in timeless romance. Whether it’s a cruise down the Nile or a saunter through sultry Buenos Aires, some places have simply mastered the art of seduction.

Still, no vacation is one size fits all, and while some couples want to escape to the golden sands of the Caribbean, other people’s idea of romance might look like a getaway to South Africa’s wine country, or seeing the Northern Lights in Iceland.

So, how to  plan a romantic getaway tailor-made for two? “My favorite piece of advice is to leave room for spontaneity,” says luxury travel advisor Amina Dearmon, the founder and owner of  Perspectives Travel . “Our lives are already so over-scheduled, it’s important to have the freedom to do absolutely nothing and enjoy each other’s company, no matter which destination you choose.”

For  domestic trips , she loves the wellness-focused resorts in Arizona like  Canyon Ranch Tucson  and the soon-to-reopen  Mii Amo . As for international destinations, she recommends the Caribbean islands of Anguilla, Dominica, and St. Lucia, as well as Venice, Italy. And if you’re going to splurge, Dearmon suggests balling out on your  accommodations (“It’s your home away from home”) and opting for extras like VIP meet and greets at the airport (“It’s a service that makes up a small percentage of your total trip cost, but it can make the biggest difference in your travel day.”).

To get a jumpstart on your planning, here are the 27 best vacation spots for couples, whether you crave a blissed-out spa getaway, a culinary vacation, or an adventure-packed itinerary.

Cap Juluca, a Belmond Hotel, Anguilla

For beach bliss, cookbook author and “Top Chef” judge Gail Simmons recommends a romantic getaway to  Cap Juluca, a Belmond Hotel on Anguilla. “Cap Juluca’s beach is as pristine as it gets, with its long strip of powder-white sand, crystal clear water, and views of St. Maarten in the distance,” she says. “Plus, you never have to fight for a beach chair or show up super early, since there’s plenty of room and the staff always has an umbrella set up before you’ve even arrived.” When Simmons and her husband weren’t lounging on golden sands, they went paddleboarding, hit the tennis court, enjoyed massages at the spa, and even went on a snorkeling excursion. The highlight was all the quality time the pair spent together: “I loved how private and remote Cap Juluca felt,” says Simmons. “At times it felt like we were on our very own island.”

La Co(o)orniche, Pyla-Sur-Mer

What could be more romantic than waking up to views of Europe’s biggest sand dune? At this Philippe Starck-designed  hotel in the seaside resort of Pyla-sur-Mer, couples enjoy panoramic views of Arcachon Bay and the mesmerizing Dune du Pilat from their beachy-chic guestrooms. Most visitors flock to the area to climb the magnificent dune, which rises 374 feet above sea level, but we won’t blame you for lazing on the sandy beach, breathing in the head-clearing scent of the pine forest.

Fernando De Noronha, Brazil

Brazil is spoiled for choice when it comes to beautiful beaches. But you’d be hard-pressed to find a place more blessed with natural beauty than Fernando de Noronho, a volcanic archipelago about 220 miles off the northeast coast of Brazil. Perhaps the dreamiest spot to spend the day with your significant other is Baia do Sancho, on the archipelago’s main island. The protected cove is the picture of earthly paradise, with forest-covered cliffs and azure waters home to colorful fish, dolphins, and sea turtles.

Con Dao Archipelago, Vietnam

Looking for beachside seclusion? Skip Vietnam’s over-trammeled Phu Quoc and head to the isolated Con Dao archipelago instead. The remote islands are perfect for privacy-seekers: 83 percent of the archipelago is protected by the Con Dao National Park.  The most luxurious place to lay your head is the  Six Senses Con Dao , an eco-resort backed by the Lo Voi Mountains and located on a mile-long private beach. It’s worth peeling yourself away from your seaside villa for a guided hike along the coast to Dam Tre Bay, arguably the archipelago’s most photogenic beach, with forested hills and dramatic granite cliffs.

Tofino, Canada

For couples seeking rugged natural beauty and mist-shrouded coastal landscapes, it’s hard to top Tofino on Vancouver Island. The windswept town has no shortage of beaches primed for romance: Stroll hand in hand along the 10-mile Long Beach, enjoy a picnic with views of Clayoquot Sound at Tonquin Beach, or take a couple’s surf lesson at Cox Bay Beach. And while there are plenty of  beautiful Airbnbs available to rent, the oceanfront  Wickaninnish Inn —one of Canada’s most legendary hotels—epitomizes bucket-list romance.

  Anse Source d’Argent Seychelles

There’s a reason Prince William and Kate Middleton honeymooned in the Seychelles. The Indian Ocean archipelago offers island romance par excellence, with luxurious resorts, off-the-grid adventures, and, of course, stunning beaches, the most famous being the Anse Source d’Argent on La Digue. It really doesn’t get more photogenic than this iconic stretch of sand, known for its shallow waters, imposing granite boulders, and swaying coconut palms. For a less-crowded—but no less picturesque option—hike three hours to Anse Marron, a remote beach on the southern tip of La Digue.

The English Lake District has long attracted outdoor enthusiasts who come to scale the U.K.’s highest peaks But in recent decades, the verdant region in northwest England has emerged as a gastronomic hotspot. It all started in 2002 when British chef Simon Rogan—one of the pioneers of the farm-to-table movement—opened his now-famous  L’Enclume in the quaint village of Cartmel. The three-starred Michelin restaurant is known for putting inventive spins on classic dishes using organic produce from Rogan’s 12-acre farm. Since then, plenty of other high-end restaurants have set up shop, like the acclaimed British-Asian  Blackbull  in Sedbergh and the  Old Stamp House in Ambleside. Now the region has become somewhat of a food pilgrimage, popular among couples craving haute cuisine and gastronomic-centered hotels like  Linthwaite House and  Our Rooms by L’Enclume .

Emilia Romagna, Italy

Every corner of Italy has something to offer from a culinary perspective. But only the northern Italian region of Emilia-Romagna can lay claim to 44 DOP food products including Parmigiano Reggiano, tortellini, and ragù bolognese. Begin your eatathon in the region’s capital, Bologna. With only one Michelin-starred restaurant in the entire city (yes, really), couples will have to do their own research, strolling the city’s grand porticos in search of the best osteria and trattorias. From Bologna, the options are limitless: visit family-run vinegar producers in Modena; try Culatello, the most prestigious of all cured meats, in Parma; and develop a taste for Lambrusco in Reggio Emilia. And for a no-expenses-spared date night out, there’s only one place to know about: Massimo Bottura’s renowned  Osteria Francescana in Modena.

As a melting pot of Chinese, Malay, and Indian cultures, Singapore is one of the world’s great food cities—and a real feast for travelers hungry for food  and  culture. And sure, there are temples of fine dining galore (we’re looking at you,  Odette ), but some of the city’s best bites come from unassuming local vendors at the city’s legendary hawker centers. At the Chinatown Complex Food Centre, sample everything from fragrant laksa soup and Chinese steamed buns to piping-hot clay pot rice. For date night, make reservations at the renowned  Atlas Bar , a vaulted space with Art Deco flair and the world’s largest gin collection. Even the city’s Jewel Changi Airport is a culinary wonderland with 100+ eateries, allowing couples to make the most of their every meal in the food-obsessed city.

South Africa’s Wine Country

From stunning Cape Dutch-style architecture and world-class restaurants to luxurious wine country hotels, South Africa’s wine country is truly suited to all tastes. After checking in at  Delaire Graff Estates , a boutique hotel and winery near Stellenbosch, toast to your romantic getaway with a bottle of méthode cap classique (South Africa’s version of Champagne). You’ll want to set aside a few days to go wine tasting in Stellenbosch and the neighboring regions Franschhoek, Paarl, and Constantia, where the grape to seek out is Pinotage, South Africa’s flagship variety. For a vacation memory that’ll age like fine wine, splurge on the tasting menu at  Chefs Warehouse at Beau Constantia .

Aman Kyoto Japan Hotel

For art and culture around every corner

It’s no secret that the French capital is a cultural powerhouse. But it’s not always easy to escape the crowds and enjoy the cultural treasures for yourself—or is it? According to the uber-stylish Parisian hoteliers Anouk and Louis Solanet of  Orso hotel group, there are plenty of lesser-known gems even in popular neighborhoods like Montmartre (you just need to know where to look). One of the couple’s favorite spots is the Musée de la vie Romantique , a literary museum situated at the base of Montmartre and set within the former house of Dutch painter Ary Scheffer. “We love to sit in silence in the hidden garden, which smells of roses and lilacs,” says Anouk. Afterwards, they recommend grabbing a drink at  Hotel Rochechouart ’s rooftop, which offers dead-on views of the Sacré Coeur. On the Left Bank, the couple loves strolling through the Jardin du Luxembourg and on to Rue Notre-Dame-des-Champs, one of the streets that inspired Woody Allen’s  Midnight in Paris,  and finally to the Giacometti Foundation—“A jewel of Parisian museum,” says Louis—which is dedicated to the life and work of the famous Swiss sculptor Alberto Giacometti.

Lausanne, Switzerland

Switzerland’s fourth-largest city is straight out of a fairytale, with a medieval Old Town and vertiginous streets that rise above the shimmering waters of Lake Geneva. It’s also one of the country’s most underrated arts hubs, thanks to the recent opening of  Platforme 10 , a striking new art district home to three of the city’s major art museums. For couples who prefer to see art en plein air, go on a cultural scavenger hunt to locate 82 works scattered throughout the hillside city (don’t miss Clelia Bettua’s sculptural weather vane at the Port of Ouchy). To cap off a perfect day, catch a show at the newly modernized Théâre de Vidy before retiring at the  Hôtel Royal Savoy Lausanne , a grand castle-like property that wouldn’t be out of place in a Wes Anderson flick. The hotel has a sublime spa, a rooftop terrace overlooking the lake, and an unbeatable location near all the top cultural spots.

Buenos Aires

Is there a city sexier than Buenos Aires? There’s something sultry about Argentina’s capital, from its dimly-lit tango bars and balmy weather to its heady mix of South American and European influences. After catching a tango performance at the city’s best-known milonga, La Catedral , continue your cultural immersion at the Teatro Colon —one of the world’s most beautiful opera houses—where Igor Stravinsky has performed, Rudolph Nureyev has danced, and Maria Callas has sung. From there, it’s a short walk to  El Ateneo Grand Splendid , a bookstore occupying a former theater and featuring century-old ceiling frescos. But to really feel the spirit of the city, couples should spend an afternoon in the colorful La Boca neighborhood, where there are vibrant murals, live music, and views of the Riachuelo River.

Venice, Italy

“Venice is pure magic,” says Amina Dearmon of Perspectives Travel. “I love being able to wander the streets, stop at an osteria for an Aperol Spritz, and watch the sunset from the Accademia Bridge.” Like so many Italian cities, Venice is like an open-air museum, brimming with art and culture at every turn. Its narrow streets and atmospheric squares are packed with heavy-hitting institutions, too, like the  Peggy Guggenheim Collection , the  Doge’s Palace , and the  Palazzo Ca’ Pesaro . First-time visitors shouldn’t miss a side trip to Murano, the second-largest island in the Venetian lagoon, to learn about its long tradition of glassmaking at the  Venice Glass Museum .

The former imperial capital of Japan is home to more than a dozen UNESCO World Heritage Sites and some 2,000 Buddhist temples and Shinto shrines. In any other city, the sheer volume of culture would be head-spinning. But in Kyoto, it’s a pleasure to stroll around the peaceful temple gardens, traditional teahouses, and ancient storefronts, feeling transported to an earlier time. Top landmarks include the famous orange torii gates at the Fushimi Inari shrine, the celebrated Kiyomizu Temple, and the impressive Nijo Castle. If the budget allows, spend the night at the new  Aman Kyoto , a sanctuary-like retreat set on 80 acres of hilly woodland in the north of the city, a stone’s throw from the golden Kinkaku-ji Temple.

30 Ultimate Romantic Getaways for Couples

One great way to strengthen relationships is to plan romantic getaways for couples around the world.

If you have ever studied the 5 Love Languages , you may know that some people give and receive love through quality time together. Planning romantic getaways fills that love language, but you can also argue that getaways for couples could fill ALL FIVE of them :

  • Quality time together - Taking a trip together
  • Acts of service - Giving your sweetheart a massage while on vacation
  • Giving and receiving gifts - Surprising your special someone with a romantic getaway
  • Words of affirmation - "Wow, sweetheart. Getting away really was the best idea!"
  • Physical touch - Holding hands as you walk along the beach at sunset

Would you agree that there are just some destinations that lend themselves to romance? Does Paris, the "City of Love" , immediately pop into mind? Perhaps it is beach retreats and adventures where no shoes (or shirt) are required.

Or maybe you're thinking along the lines of gondolas and canals in Venice , one of the many romantic european cities—perfect if you are planning a honeymoon, babymoon, or an epic milestone anniversary trip.

All destinations become MORE romantic because you are with the person you love to travel with the most.

Romantic Getaways for Couples Strengthen Your Relationship

In a study compiled by the US Travel Association , they found that couples who travel together are "significantly more likely to be satisfied in their relationships, communicate well with their partners, enjoy more romance...spend quality time together and share common goals and desires."

Not only that, but there are long-term benefits for couples who visit dream travel destinations around the world. Travel helps to build and maintain your relationship AND spark romance.

Ro·mance (n) - a feeling of excitement and mystery associated with love. A quality or feeling of mystery, excitement, and remoteness from everyday life. Google

Keeping the romance alive takes effort, inspirational ideas, time together, and creativity. I love how Google defines romance as a "remoteness from everyday life" .

Whether you are planning a babymoon, your honeymoon, an anniversary getaway, or a "Just Because" weekend together, finding that " remoteness from everyday life" can be discovered at charming romantic European cities or beach retreats —dream travel destinations for couples all over the world .

Plus, there is something about planning and taking a trip with YOUR SOMEONE that adds anticipation and a little extra spice to life. Who else's shoulder can you get away with sleeping on during an 8-hour flight?

Tips for Choosing Romantic Getaways for Couples

When you begin to plan your couple's getaway, give some thought to the destinations on your couples bucket list (or maybe you need to sit down together and brainstorm ideas for your bucket list).

Have you been saving ideas to a Couples Bucket List board on Pinterest?

Considerations on choosing your romantic getaways :

  • What is your budget?
  • How much time do you have? If it is just a weekend, maybe consider destinations close to home. If you have one to two weeks, consider romantic European cities.
  • Will you have to recover from jet lag?
  • What type of weather or experience are you hoping to have, ie., relaxation at the beach or hiking in the mountains or skiing in Switzerland?
  • If you have children at home, can you get someone to watch them?
  • Obviously you will want to check for flight and hotel availability.

The most romantic hotels Chris and I stay aren't always ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ accommodations; our getaways as a couple are memorable because of the time away together.

Tips for Choosing A Place to Stay for Romantic Getaways

Whether you are using reward points to plan your accommodations,  booking a hotel room , or planning a stay at a vacation rental, here are a few questions to consider—especially if your romantic getaway will last longer than a week:

  • Is breakfast included?
  • Are your accommodations close to the main tourist areas?
  • Will you need to rent a car? Is parking included?
  • Are you staying within your budget?
  • Will you need to do laundry?
  • Are you interested in making your own meals?
  • How many flights of stairs will you have to climb to reach your accommodation (in Europe the first floor is actually on the second level)?
  • Is there an elevator in the building?
  • Is A/C mentioned in the rental listing? If not, it likely is not included. Is that important?
  • Are your accommodations in a safe part of the city?
  • Have you checked the cancellation policies for all of your lodgings?

Be sure to read the reviews and do your research to see what previous guests have to say about the accommodations.

Itching for a romantic weekend getaway? While we fully believe that there's no better anniversary gift than one that will help you make memories together (though we wouldn't say no to some nice jewelry ), you don't have to save your vacation for a special occasion. Sometimes a quick couples trip can be just what the doctor ordered. You can head to the Southern US or an all-inclusive in the Caribbean for sunny, beach-friendly weather, the Northeast or West for some mind clearing mountain air, or even European capitals to see the highlights.

The first step is deciding what kind of couples vacation you’re craving: Do you plan on hunkering down in the sheets all weekend? Are you ready to hit the pavement and explore a new city through its museums and restaurants? Or are you looking for a relaxing babymoon destination where you can dig into a juicy new nonfiction book and wiggle your toes in some warm, powder-soft sand? We've compiled some of our favorite locations around the world—from affordable locales to high-end resorts for celebrating milestones—all of which will ignite the romance. So pack your best swimsuit (or puffer jacket ), hop on Expedia (their new ChatGPT tool makes even last-minute planning super easy), or grab a Booking.com promo code , and read on to find out which trip is perfect for you…and yours.

Dominican Republic

The Dominican Republic may be more well known for spring breaks than romantic weekend getaways, but that could be because you’ve never visited the eastern tip of the island, a paradise known as Cap Cana. Here you’ll find one of the Caribbean’s best marinas for fishing, miles of white-sand beaches for fun in the sun, and some of the country’s most glamorous and romantic hotels. Our pick in the area is Eden Roc Cap Cana , DR’s only Relais & Châteaux property that boasts a whopping 30,000 acres for true seclusion. Apart from elegant beachfront villa accommodations, there is also a brand-new spa and wellness program that includes many in-room services like couples massages and custom bath soaks. And those looking for the most unique romantic dinner should make sure to book a private meal at the boutique property’s on-site cenote, a limestone cave complete with a waterfall fountain. If you're looking for a more inexpensive option, Punta Cana has droves of lovely (and “affordable”) all-inclusives like The Majestic Elegance , which is on a stunning beach with crystal-clear water.

Le Barthelemy

The glamorous island in the French West Indies is known not only for its elegant hotels but its many peaceful white-sand beaches and romantic watering holes. We recommend a stay at Le Barthélemy Hotel & Spa , a boutique oceanfront property that can arrange romantic excursions like a sunset cruise on a private yacht, custom couples massages in partnership with swank beauty line La Mer, and oversized suites complete with private plunge pools that call for a skinny dip.

28 Best Romantic Weekend Getaways for a Couples Vacation 2023

Whether you've been with your SO for a few months and this is the first time you're traveling together or you're celebrating your 25th wedding anniversary, one of our favorite destinations for some serious fun is Nashville. The Music City has everything: bustling honky-tonks to blow off steam and boogie down (we're partial to the old-school vibes at Robert's Western World), incredible eats (we're still dreaming about the wood-fired edamame and Wagyu brisket at Noko and the slab bacon at Oak Steakhouse ), chic cocktail bars far from the main drag (we love Bastion ), and a vibrant arts scene. For a taste of all of the above, stay at The Bobby , where you'll have easy access to its concert series featuring local artists, a slick pool, and one of the most IG-worthy watering holes—its 1956 retrofitted Greyhound bus—and we're just talking about what's on the rooftop. The sleek boutique hotel, which just turned five, has a gallery, a sexy Garage Bar where you can leave your (literal) mark (the walls are adorned in neon graffiti), and some of the most comfortable beds in Tennessee. Though it's perfectly located steps from Printer's Alley and a quick walk from Broadway, you'll feel like you're in an oasis away from the fray if droves of bachelorette parties aren't your thing. And if you did spend most of your weekend mixing and mingling with the girls in the veils, the menu at Union Tavern offers plenty to help you soak up the whiskey. It's the type of eclectic place that'll make you feel like a rock star, which can be enough to shake up any couple's rut.

Puerto Rico

From the East Coast, you can fly to Puerto Rico in less time than most road trips, making it an appealing long-weekend destination during the winter months, but we love it in the summer too. Its capital, San Juan, is also one of our favorite cities for couples due to its mix of beautiful, historic buildings, and many charming, intimate restaurants. For an inexpensive hotel that is still suitably pampering for a romantic weekend, check in to the Condado Vanderbilt , located in the über-chic Condado district. The storied Spanish Revival property boasts amenities like pool and beach butlers, Puerto Rico’s only hammam, and two different oceanfront restaurants.

Antigua may not get as much attention as some other Lesser Antilles islands like St. Kitt’s or St. Lucia, but we think being a little more under the radar is what makes it one of the more romantic locales in the region. We’re huge fans of its gentle ocean breezes, peaceful white-sand beaches, and the vibrant coral reefs to explore by snorkel or scuba. And if you’re longing for a vacation during which you don’t have to plan a single thing, check out Curtain Bluff , an all-inclusive with—thankfully—delicious food and plenty of on-site bonding activities like snorkeling trips to Cades Reef or couples tennis lessons. And if your MO is simply to laze, your beach concierge can certainly help with that.

San Miguel de Allende, Mexico

About 168 miles north from Mexico City, the fairy-tale-like San Miguel de Allende is more than worth the three and a half-hour drive it takes to get there from the capital (or an hour and a half from the nearest airport in Léon, Guanajuato). The storied city, first established in the 16th century, was designated as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2008, and makes for an idyllic long weekend escape. Chic overnight options abound in San Miguel de Allende, though, for a truly memorable experience that captures the historic charm, consider staying at Casa de Sierra de Nevada, a Belmond Hotel. Located in the heart of the city center, the property consists of six restored 17th- and 18th century Mexican mansions in a walkable cluster, each complete with vaulted archways, bougainvillea-shaded courtyards, and ornate, trickling fountains. Accommodations-wise, there are 23 suites and 14 rooms, each one uniquely decorated with antique furnishings and local artworks. The outdoor pool, ensconced in lush greenery, is certainly a highlight, but far from the only one. There’s plenty to love and enjoy when staying here, from the central location to the variety of food; the hotel is home to two restaurants (Andanza and Restaurante del Parque), plus the Sazón Cooking School and Tunki Rooftop by Handshake, a rooftop bar with arguably the best views and cocktails in town. (Stop by for a drink at sunset and thank us later.) Having a car in San Miguel de Allende isn’t needed, as nearly all the main attractions are walkable; the hotel is minutes away from the daily Market, the Parroquia church (a 17th-century gothic marvel), and the best churros in town at Chocolates y Churros San Agustín. A vibrant art scene thrives in San Miguel de Allende; La Fabricá la Aurora is a must-visit for discovering the local crafts.

If you're thinking of heading out west, it's well worth spending a few days in the Land of Enchantment. Fly into Albuquerque, then make your way north to Santa Fe, an hour and change drive to New Mexico's capital. Nestled in the foothills of the Sangre de Cristo mountains, Santa Fe is a popular destination for creatives and adventurers of all stripes, with a big local arts scene, unique pueblo-style adobe architecture, and tons of skiing, hiking, and mountain biking available throughout the year. For a weekend trip, stay at the charming Bishop's Lodge , which is located just outside the downtown area in Tesuque. It's the perfect place to appreciate the rich cultural history of New Mexico and reconnect with nature. Spend the morning swimming, horseback riding, or hiking around the property, then arrange for a pueblo tour for after lunch, followed by a massage in the spa. Book dinner at Sky Fire, which specializes in wood-fired dishes with local, seasonal ingredients. For a day trip, make time to visit Georgia O'Keeffe's home and studio in Abiquiú, which is open for private and public tours throughout the year.

Miami is an understandably popular destination: sunny skies, sexy cocktail bars, and plenty of beaches. But not every hotel screams romance when music from the rooftop bar is pounding until 2 a.m. That’s why we’re huge fans of Surfside, a more peaceful and elegant enclave due north of the debauchery of South Beach. And one of our favorite hotels there is one you’ve probably seen on Instagram: The Four Seasons Hotel at the Surf Club . A veritable oasis in the middle of the buzzing city, it boasts oceanfront rooms, some of Miami’s best restaurants, and a historic lobby bar that is as sultry as they come. They offer plenty of ways to pamper your significant other, including private poolside cabanas for some surreptitious canoodling, and personalized cocktails from the cocktail trolley at The Champagne Bar. Pro tip: You can even ask for a custom picnic basket to set up a romantic dinner on the beach. The Setai is another perfect place if you're there more to soak up the sun than the tequila. The entire property is dimly lit to exude all the calm energy, and that's nothing compared to visiting the five-star Valmont spa (get the Luminosity of Ice facial, trust us). There are also three different pools all set at different temperatures so you can swim year-round, and there's private beach access, too. As for dining, the Setai's options are unmatched. We're partial to Jaya which has a selection of Asian-fusion dishes and evening entertainment like fire dancers and contortionists.

Cancún, Mexico

Cancún might not be the first place you think of for a relaxing family vacation, but there's no reason why it can't be—and one of the best places to unwind in the Yucatan peninsula is the Garza Blanca Resort & Spa , one of the area's most modern and luxurious all-inclusive resorts. Set on a palm tree-studded beach, it features not one, not two, but six pools between the rooftop and the ground level that are perfect for entertaining couples, friend groups, and families with young kids. As an all-inclusive resort, food and drink is the star of the show: There are multiple Mexican cuisine options (including a taco food trunk on the beach), a Japanese restaurant, a steakhouse, and Chinese fusion up on the roof. Breakfast can be enjoyed in the suite—or in the Gourmet Hall, which turns into a massive buffet each morning. For a slow wakeup or night in, there's of course room service, which is handled here by a dedicated floor butler who's available round-the-clock. Since the word “spa” is in the resort's name, you'd be remiss not to book a spa appointment, which offers massages and facials, as well as a signature hydrotherapy circuit. (Pro tip: Book an evening session and watch the sunset as you alternate between dips in the cold plunge bath and the heated jacuzzi.) A four-night stay would be ideal to enjoy a little bit of everything the resort has to offer (hi, morning yoga), though we wouldn't blame you for wanting to extend your trip by a few more days.

28 Best Romantic Weekend Getaways for a Couples Vacation 2023

Aruba, known as One Happy Island, is one of our favorite Caribbean vacation spots not only for its world-famous beaches but for its relative affordability. It has plenty of hotels for couples, like the Hilton Aruba Caribbean Resort & Casino , which is a popular spot for engagements (hint-hint). The hotel even employs a sunset concierge, who can suggest the perfect romantic spot for popping the big question. And if you’re already married? Fun fact: Aruba is also known as a vow-renewal destination and the hotel can set up a whole renewal package, which includes a couples massage and a 30-minute photo shoot during sunset. If your idea of romance is singing your heart out, the downtown happens to have a very fun piano bar . Or while away the day at Renaissance Wind Creek Aruba Resort's private flamingo island, which is excellent for photo ops.

Puerto Vallarta

Courtesy of Hilton Vallarta Riviera

Courtesy of Hilton Vallarta Riviera

Puerto Vallarta, on Mexico’s western coast, is fast becoming our favorite beach destination in the country. Not only are the shores of the Pacific Ocean spectacular, but many of the resorts in the area are comparatively inexpensive. One of the standout properties here is the Hilton Vallarta Riviera, which is perched between the Bahia de Banderas and the tropical forests near the Sierra Madre Mountains. And because every room here is outfitted with a private balcony, it’s a stellar hotel for a romantic escape. Or, for a hotel with history, stay at Casa Kimberly , the former home of Elizabeth Taylor and Richard Burton (you can also just stop by for a cocktail). Plus, the LGBTQ+-friendly downtown has an array of fun bars, restaurants, and cabarets (don't miss the Beyoncé impersonator ), as well as affordable places to stay. We love Pinnacle Suites which is relatively inexpensive, especially if you're traveling with another couple.

We couldn’t write a romantic travel guide without including the City of Love, right? While we probably don’t need to sell you on Paris, we’ll give you a quick primer: Everything is beautiful. From the winding streets of Le Marais to the stunning art collections at Musée d’Orsay and the Louvre to the quiet elegance of the Seine River, it’s hard to turn a corner here without feeling amorous. And if you’re celebrating a special anniversary or just looking for a bit of a splurge trip, Hôtel de Crillon is jaw-droppingly romantic. Located in an iconic and historic building in the heart of the city at Place de La Concorde, the property is one of Paris’s grandes dames for good reason. For couples, indulgence is the key word here, from the bespoke treatments at Sense, a Rosewood Spa, to intimate private dinners at La Cave, to enormous suites, some of which were designed by Karl Lagerfeld. Don’t miss a meal at the brand-new restaurant, Nonos et Comestibles par Paul Pairet, helmed by one of France’s most acclaimed chefs. There's also the new Hôtel Dame des Arts in the Left Bank that features a beautiful rooftop bars with views for days. Celebrating a milestone anniversary? Also consider the Cheval Blanc Paris , which is, in a word très magnifique thanks to its stunning panoramic views of the Seine.

Wailea, Maui

You’re probably aware of the charms of the Hawaiian islands, and of Maui specifically, but we will direct you to our favorite part of the island: Wailea. With 1,500 acres of beaches and resorts and only 35 minutes from the Kahului Airport, it’s the idyllic spot for a romantic getaway. And no hotel in the area is better for couples than Hotel Wailea , an all-suite and—crucially—adults-only boutique property. For a once-in-a-lifetime dinner, book a meal in the hotel’s secluded treehouse, where couples can savor a seven-course meal while suspended among fragrant mango trees.

Mexico City

Courtesy of Ignacia Guest House

Mexico City is the most chameleon-like of cities, seemingly able to adapt to any sort of vacation, for any type of traveler. And with its charming, colorful streets, incredible yet inexpensive restaurants, plentiful mezcal, and temperate climate, it’s certainly top of mind for romantic weekend getaways. For a refuge that is both high-touch service but affordable, look into the charming Ignacia Guest House . With room for only 18 guests, it’s incredibly intimate, and it’s also filled with private terraces and fragrant gardens that can be the setting for clandestine kisses. Even better, it’s a proper bed-and-breakfast. Guests wake every morning to the smell of tortillas cooking on the griddle, and can sit down to a glass of orange juice freshly squeezed from the old-growth citrus trees on property.

New Orleans

Courtesy of International House Hotel

If romance to you means excellent food and drink, and live music, then consider New Orleans. One of our favorite boutique hotels is also one of the city’s most inexpensive. International House , located just a few blocks away from the French Quarter, is inside a beautiful Beaux Arts building that is also the city’s first boutique hotel. The hotel can arrange a private cocktail experience at its award-winning bar, loa, or even a private Vodou ceremony, which includes creating a lucky charm for the couple.

Santa Barbara

Courtesy of Mar Monte Hotel

While you can’t really say Prince Harry put Montecito and Santa Barbara on the map, we are finding ourselves more interested in the central California coast after he and Meghan Markle set up camp there a few years ago. Unfortunately, we can’t wrangle you a double date with the duo, but we can point you in the direction of one of Santa Barbara’s best hotels: Mar Monte . With three acres of Spanish-inspired grounds and a pool with oceanfront views, it’s the prime weekend getaway for romance. The hotel is also offering a special Mar Monte by Land and Sea package for the holiday, which includes a private flight, a three-hour wine tasting, and a private sunset charter on a yacht.

Courtesy of The Mayfair Townhouse

Courtesy of The Mayfair Townhouse

Elegant London, with its beautiful architecture, plentiful parks, and bountiful cultural activities (hello, West End), is one of our favorite cities for a romantic escape. And our preferred spot for a couples vacation is The Mayfair Townhouse , an intimate and stylish hotel that's primely located. Besides the attentive staff, we love the hotel’s on-site watering hole, The Dandy Bar, which is a great way to end a busy day of sightseeing (or begin the start of your evening). Couples looking for the utmost privacy and space should ask for the The Garden Suite, which comes with its own conservatory and patio. Or book a stay at the newly renovated, Dorchester in Mayfair which has an especially sexy site for sipping, the Vesper bar , which plays homage to James Bond.

Palmetto Bluff, South Carolina

Courtesy of Montage Palmetto Bluff

Courtesy of Montage Palmetto Bluff

There are few places we’ve visited that are imbued with a sense of calm like Palmetto Bluff, a secluded enclave of 20,000 acres in South Carolina’s Lowcountry. And with plenty of scenic walking paths, a stellar golf course, and tons of Southern-inflected restaurants, you won’t be bored, either. The area is also home to one of the state’s swankiest resorts: Montage Palmetto Bluff. A quick drive from either Savannah (another great couples escape) or Hilton Head, it’s ideal for a romantic getaway; on-site Spa Montage even has a whole section of the menu dedicated to couples. There you can indulge in everything from massages to the intriguingly named Lovers Jubilee, which includes an exfoliation, a soak, and a massage. And while we wouldn’t blame you if you were loath to leave your bed (they’re  very comfortable), make sure you grab dinner at River House, the hotel’s delicious ode to Lowcountry cuisine.

Chances are, when you think of a romantic Caribbean destination, you’re picturing something in the Bahamas. Known for its crystal-clear ocean water, and 16 major islands offering a wealth of outdoor activities, it’s an excellent locale for a romantic vacation that involves equal doses of downtime and heart-pounding adventure. The islands are home to a wide range of properties, but if you’re looking to truly wow your sweetheart, make a beeline for The Ocean Club . Famed for its sprawling, white-sand beach, couples can opt for mega-sized rooms like Villa Residences or a bungalow complete with an infinity plunge pool.

New York City

Courtesy of Ritz Carlton Central Park

Whether it's for the country’s top hotels, restaurants, theater productions, or museums, a romantic trip to New York City is the place to wow your significant other. And if you can snag a hotel room with a view of Central Park, there is hardly a more iconic way to spend your vacation. For the ultimate in classic New York hospitality, grab a room at the storied Ritz-Carlton New York , Central Park. After its recent renovation, one of the city’s most elegant (and centrally located) properties is once again welcoming guests for romantic sojourns.

Georgetown, Washington, DC

Courtesy of Rosewood DC

Washington, DC’s Georgetown neighborhood, with its charming townhouses, excellent shopping, and superb restaurants, is one of the most vibrant areas in the entire city. And with the recent opening of Rosewood Washington, DC , and its unique Townhouse collection, now is a great time for a romantic escape. Couples who book one of these oversized accommodations are treated to a vacation in essentially a private home with room service on speed dial. There will also be a special Rosewood Romance package for the holiday, which includes Champagne and chocolate-covered strawberries on arrival. For a truly romantic outing, head to Martin's Tavern where JFK proposed to Jackie O.

Courtesy of Secret Bay

Known as the Caribbean’s “nature island,” Dominica may often be mistaken for its more famed neighbor, the Dominican Republic, but the names are really where the similarities end for these two islands. The unmatched beauty of Dominica’s landscape makes it one of the most soothing places to visit for a tropical vacation. And there is no hotel more romantic on the island than Secret Bay , whose all-villa room stock also makes it one of the most luxurious. Here couples can relax in their oversized bathtub for two or take a dip in their personal plunge pool followed by a relaxing hammock nap. And don’t look for menus at dinnertime: Your meals can be customized to your exact preferences. But if you’d rather not be bothered at all? Just stick the red flag outside your villa; the staff will make sure you get plenty of—ahem—alone time

Waikiki, Oahu

Courtesy of Wayfinder Waikiki

Courtesy of Wayfinder Waikiki

There may be nowhere more fun on Oahu than Waikiki. The south shore area of Honolulu is jam-packed with beautiful resorts, plenty of excellent shopping, and beautiful beaches with calm water. But finding a hotel in Waikiki that’s romantic, chic,  and inexpensive was pretty much impossible until the recent opening of the über-charming Wayfinder . Located right in the center of town, the midcentury modern boutique property has rooms at a very budget-friendly rate, along with poolside suites and quirky, colorful decor. Enjoy a romantic night on your room’s private lanai, or take advantage of the hotel’s location for a quick stroll on the nearby beach. Insider tip: The poolside speakeasy, Lost + Found, is opening soon for tasty, tropical-themed cocktails.

Hudson Valley, New York

Courtesy of Hudson Valley

We all know that the Hudson Valley is having a moment. And unlike some of the popular beach towns close to New York City, this bucolic area just a few hours north of the metropolis has plenty to offer year-round, from skiing in the winter to stunning hiking in the summer. But until this fall, it lacked a true destination-worthy property; the kind of place you splurge on for a special anniversary or romantic weekend away. That all changed with the opening of Wildflower Farms , a peaceful retreat set against the stunning backdrop of the Shawangunk Ridge. The rooms here are all freestanding cabins, which makes them perfect for an intimate couples vacation, but there’s plenty to do on site as well, from sumptuous spa Thistle and steamy outdoor hot tubs to stellar farm-to-table cuisine from on-site restaurant Clay. Or, if you're looking for a more urban escape, shack up in an Airbnb in the town of Hudson, where restaurants, bars, and shopping will all be in walking distance.

Asheville, North Carolina

28 Best Romantic Weekend Getaways for a Couples Vacation 2023

This lush city in North Carolina’s Blue Ridge Mountains is as perfect for couples who like to take in nature (the hiking trails are next-level) as it is for those who prefer to…après-hike. There are as many scenic trails as there are breweries; plus, it has a bustling arts scene. Stay at the historic Omni Park Grove Inn to enjoy sweeping views of the stunning nature Asheville has to offer, or downtown for easy access to all the bars and restaurants—it's a totally walking-friendly city! If your love language is sharing a microbrew, it also has more than 40 fantastic breweries featuring great craft beer, and many offer live music and enough giant pretzels to help you soak up those IPAs.

Ios, Greece

Calio Resort in Ios Greece

While if you're traveling directly from the U.S. to Greece, this destination wouldn't exactly work for a weekend, but we'd be remiss if we didn't include a property that was quite literally built on love in this round-up. For a more laid-back holiday, the Greek island of Ios is known for its stunning remote beaches and archaeological sites. While you can find a vibrant party scene (nothing says romance quite like sharing a few cocktails on the sand and dancing till dawn), there are also ample places to relax. Situated in a mostly untapped area in what was once a hippie haven in the ’70s, the luxury resort Calilo was created with sustainability and privacy in mind. It offers 30 suites that are mindfully designed with features like heart-shaped plunge pools (hey, we said it was romantic), swim-up bars, and sumptuous daybeds. Each element of the property is infused with the love and creativity of the owners. a couple who have been operating Calio since 2019. If you’re lucky enough to catch an encounter with the Greek matriarch of the family-owned property, you might even get some sage words of marital wisdom (“Our philosophy? Create a life you can fall in love with”). This June the tranquil retreat will debut a three-story spa and wellness center and three additional state-of-the-art suites.

Charleston, South Carolina

Iconic row of colorful historic houses downtown Charleston SC.

For a destination that exudes Southern charm, has year-round lovely weather, and is the perfect city to while away the afternoon walking hand in hand on its famously beautiful streets, consider Charleston, where you can almost always snag affordable flights if you're coming from the East Coast. Stay the The Vendue , which is conveniently located near the harbor and the most picturesque Rainbow Row (guests can grab a free bike to help them explore). The hotel also happens to have one of the best rooftops in town to kick your feet up and take in a sunset and views of Charleston's iconic architecture.

best getaway trips for couples

Looking to escape the everyday grind with a picture-perfect romantic holiday?

We’ve looked all over the USA and plucked out 10 weekend getaways that cater to couples of all tastes. From mountains to beaches, big cities to small towns, sprawling national parks to epic West Coast drives, here are the best places in the US for a romantic escape from it all.

A couple standing on the Bixby Bridge, looking over the view, on highway 1 near the rocky Big Sur coastline of the Pacific Ocean California, USA

1. Big Sur, California

Best for couples who love the open road

Enjoy quality time with breathtaking views on one of the country’s most celebrated road trips. Big Sur ’s wild stretch of Hwy 1 matches unparalleled vistas with hidden beaches and hiking opportunities, bubbling hot springs and excellent dining options – which makes it ideal for a couple looking to hit the road and reconnect with nature, without going totally rustic .

What’s more, the drive is better as a duo: if you take turns, you’ll both have a chance to look out the window, and to get behind the wheel. (Just be sure to check your route before you set out, as rockslides, flooding, wildfires and auto accidents can all trigger closures.)

Start north of Big Sur at Carmel-by-the-Sea , and give yourself time to explore a village renowned for its artistic charm, from its galleries and shopping to its 18th-century mission . On your way south, stop at Point Lobos State Park to watch the sea lions cavorting on the coast, then pause near the highly Instagrammable Bixby Bridge to snap a pic or two.

A couple in the distance, walking along a white-sand beach with palm trees

2. Key Biscayne, Florida

Best for sun-seeking couples

Less than 10 miles from downtown, Key Biscayne isn’t technically part of Miami . Yet it’s close and continuous enough with the city that it could be an outer neighborhood – if it didn’t feel so darn different. From skyscrapers and scene-y clubs to quiet white-sand beaches , bike-friendly streets and water sports galore, this barrier island promises to transport you and your loved one far from the urban clamor.

Between its 19th-century lighthouse – the oldest standing structure in all of Florida – and its 1.25-mile natural beach, Bill Baggs Cape Florida State Park is a must-visit. Couples can recharge together under an umbrella, or paddle a kayak for two on the ocean waves. If you’re arriving by sea, head straight for Boater’s Grill , where you can dock at No Name Harbor and tuck into bacalao fritters and fresh-caught snapper.

The Rusty Pelican is another local institution that’s going strong after more than half a century. Reserve a table for brunch or time it to sunset to make the most of the magnificent waterfront location on Rickenbacker Marina.

A library and church in Harrisville, New Hampshire, USA

3. Monadnock Region, New Hampshire

Best for small-town-loving couples

The southwest corner of New Hampshire is dotted with historic towns that exude charm – and provide a backdrop for romantic touring. Make a weekend of it by hitting the back roads and driving your way from village to village, one white-spired church and town green at a time.

Harrisville (population 953) boasts a beautifully preserved red-brick mill complex once powered by the waterfall that flows next to it; today, it’s home to knitting outfitter  Harrisville Designs . After a walk around the village (it won’t take long), stop for lunch at the picture-perfect Harrisville General Store . Nearby Hancock (pop 1654) has one of the loveliest Main Sts around, lined with historic homes with huge porches and white-picket fences; the storied Hancock Inn , dating to 1789, is scheduled to reopen in 2024. Peterborough (in these parts, a small city – of 6284 people) is the regional hub for the arts, and its small streets are filled with galleries , small museums and original shops. (It’s also a creative muse itself, supposedly serving as the inspiration for Grover’s Corners in Thornton Wilder’s Our Town .)

You won’t have to drive far to see the massif that lends its name to the area. If you’re after a bit of exertion after all that car time, Monadnock , one of the world’s most-climbed mountains, offers a moderate hike with a major payoff: 360° views from its rocky, 3165-ft summit that on clear days stretch as far as Boston .

A fish on a platter in a nice restaurant.

4. Williamsburg, New York City

Best for gourmet couples

Even in New York City ’s standout restaurant scene, North Brooklyn boasts a particular embarrassment of riches. By basing yourself in Williamsburg, you’ll be at the center of the action.

Whether you’re after a fun date over cha siu “McRibs” and “MSG martinis” or a morning-after brunch of salted-egg-custard french toast, Cantonese-American Bonnie’s is a hot ticket. In South Williamsburg, elegant Aldama serves elevated takes on the street foods of central Mexico, while over by the BQE, Llama Inn ’s dimly lit dining room sets the scene for romance over beautifully rendered Peruvian fare.

On the northern edge of the neighborhood, KRU does modern twists on Thai classics in industrial-chic, apothecary-esque environs. And for a casual bite, Taqueria Ramírez slings meaty Mexico City–style tacos from a subway-tiled storefront in Greenpoint. Come prepared to queue up for your tripa , campechano , longaniza , suadero  and al pastor on weekends.

Couple standing on a rock at sunset in Joshua Tree National Park, California, USA

5. Joshua Tree National Park, California

Best for outdoorsy couples

The two distinct desert ecosystems of Joshua Tree National Park present myriad opportunities for open-air bonding – think spring wildflowers, all sorts of animals, stunning sunsets and epic stargazing. If you prefer to stroll hand in hand, there are short walks and nature trails, with more-strenuous treks – plus biking, backpacking and rock-climbing – if you’d rather work up a sweat. (However you get out and about, pack more water than you’ll think you’ll need in this hot, dry, gorgeous place.)

You’ll find on-site campgrounds – but renting romantic accommodations nearby takes things up a notch. Barely 10 miles from the park gate, Cascade Trails Mustang Sanctuary offers five glamping tents alongside equine experiences, such as sunset trail excursions and private stargazing rides (bookable even if you’re not staying overnight).

Take a dip in the heated pool, then cozy up in a sleek Airstream trailer at AutoCamp Joshua Tree , or hit the mineral spa and pool at the adults-only, 420-friendly, clothing-optional Mi Kasa Hot Springs . Celebrating something special? Peruse Plum Guide’s listings for the perfectly private, modern abode.

6. Santa Fe, New Mexico

Best for couples who love mixing old and new

A city founded by the Spanish more than 400 years ago is today a center of artistic innovation. Strict planning laws mandate the use of adobe in all construction (even gas stations!), giving Santa Fe its signature earth-toned look and sense of architectural harmony and continuity. Yet riots of color and imagination lie behind those earthen walls.

In and around the historic Plaza , world-class museums showcase paintings by famous resident Georgia O’Keeffe , as well as new work by local Indigenous artists . Further afield, the Museum of International Folk Art teems with everything from brightly painted masks to carved dolls to beaded jewelry and much, much more (it’s the world’s largest such collection).

But perhaps no site exemplifies Santa Fe’s vibe of free-spirited inventiveness better than Meow Wolf . An artist collective has transformed a former bowling alley (donated by another Santa Fe creative, George RR Martin, of Game of Thrones fame) into an immersive wonderland, with trippy lights, hidden passageways and a head-scratching narrative to guide visitors through all the madness. Rather than stepping into history, here you’ll feel you’ll have stepped into another dimension.

Two men cycling by fall foliage, Aspen, Colorado, USA

7. Aspen, Colorado

Best for high-rolling couples

Ritzy Aspen is a legendary celebrity hangout, particularly during the peak winter months , when the perfect powder, jaw-dropping real estate and impeccable dining options draw a steady crowd of A-listers – and prices to match. That said, it’s not all snow days : with biking, hiking and cultural events during the other months of the year, it’s a true four-season destination. While planning a budget weekend here would be a tall order, this is a great place to go all out.

If you’re that other kind of high-rolling couple , there’s plenty for you as well. Like the rest of Colorado, Aspen has a selection of recreational and medical marijuana dispensaries ; Dalwhinnie is worth a stop for the eye candy alone. A tasteful boutique with a cowboy–cousin–of–Ralph Lauren aesthetic, it caters to the VIP market, juxtaposing pre-rolled joints, jars of flower and deluxe accessories with clothing, jewelry and home goods worth tens of thousands. As you’d expect in a place like this, prices are higher than at your average dispensary.

A mural of President Barack Obama is seen in the Rogers Park neighborhood, Chicago, Illinois, USA

8. Rogers Park, Chicago

Best for culture-oriented couples

Hyde Park and Bucktown–Wicker Park are well known for their architectural bona fides and trendsetting, art-inspired style. But to mingle with a young crowd of diverse creatives, the Far North Side community of Rogers Park is the place to head. With 60-plus languages spoken and too many cuisines to count – from Caribbean to Mexican to Ethiopian to Japanese – this is the Chicago neighborhood that, based on recent census data, “most closely matches the racial and ethnic breakdown of the entire city,” per the Chicago Sun-Times .

During the day, check out the Mile of Murals on Glenwood Ave, wander through the galleries and studios of the Glenwood Arts District and stop by the Leather Archives & Museum for a peek at the history and culture of leather, kink, fetish and BDSM.

By night, catch original works at the Factory Theater , world music and magicians at Rhapsody and stories from underrepresented communities – expressed via stage combat! – at Babes With Blades . Then grab a nightcap at the romantic Le Piano , an intimate bar and performance space anchored by – yes – a grand piano.

The main building of the Inn at Little Washington, Washington, Virginia, USA

9. Washington, Virginia

Best for history-loving couples

About a 90-minute drive west of DC in the beautiful Shenandoah Valley , the country’s original Washington sits in the shadow of the Blue Ridge Mountains. Expect a quaint small town with world-famous accommodations.

Relais & Châteaux’s Inn at Little Washington is home to the only three-Michelin-star restaurant in the DC metro area. Since it’s beloved for its tasting menus, you just might spot members of the other Washington’s elite at the next table over. (You may also recall its unique approach to filling the dining room post-lockdown ).

You won’t have to travel far to enjoy more of this charmer of a town. Sip a glass of locally made wine at Gadino Cellars or Little Washington Winery , duck in and out of the village’s shops and galleries, or head underground to check out the biggest caverns in the eastern US . You can also do some paddling on the Shenandoah River, motor south to spectacular Skyline Dr and hit the rest of nearby Shenandoah National Park for adventures both on foot and two wheels .

shutterstock1266881278.jpg

10. San Juan, Puerto Rico

Best for LGBTIQ+ couples

One of the most welcoming destinations in Puerto Rico – and the entire Caribbean – for LGBTIQ+ travelers, San Juan is a warm-weather retreat with gay-friendly neighborhoods, accommodations, nightlife and restaurants. To keep things lively, a Queer Filmfest takes place in May, as well as an epic Pride celebration in June. And all of this is just a couple of hours by plane from most cities on the East Coast.

You and your partner can hit one of two unofficial gay beaches , then prepare for a big night out at one of the capital’s fun LGBTIQ+ bars, whether you’re catching a drag show at Kweens Klub or Zal Si Puedes , dancing up a storm at La Placita , downing cheap, strong drinks at Tía Maria’s Liquor Store or making new friends at La Sombrilla Rosa .

Looking to treat yourselves to a nice meal? Order broiled lobster and booze-filled coconut drinks at the gay-owned Ostra Cosa , or head to Jose Santaella’s gay-friendly namesake for beautiful contemporary Puerto Rican fare in an equally beautifully designed space.

As for accommodations, Coqui del Mar is an adults-only, gay-owned guesthouse in Ocean Park, with a clothing-optional pool and first-floor studios complete with two-person walk-in showers. You can also join group excursions to the rainforest and the beach. The all-vegetarian, gay-owned boutique Dreamcatcher is also in Ocean Park, while the adults-only Condado Ocean Club faces the sea in – you guessed it – Condado.

The best romantic getaways in the U.S. for couples

Relax with your love on a romantic getaway in the U.S., from desert escapes to beach retreats

Clara Hogan

Couples who travel together are happier together. That claim may be an oversimplification, but it's safe to say that exploring the world, getting out of the daily routines and trying new things together are all effective at spurring romance and connection.

From your first romantic weekend trip away to your honeymoon or  babymoon  and the many anniversary vacations to come, taking trips as a couple is a surefire way to  keep the spark alive and form a deeper bond. And while a European voyage to Paris or Rome tops many people's bucket lists, you don't have to travel far to find romance.  Across the U.S., charming destinations await that will sweep your one and only off their feet.

Head to  California  to enjoy some of the country's best food and wine amid coastal scenery, embrace nature in the Colorado mountains or Arizona desert, or visit a charming East Coast town like Martha's Vineyard or Nantucket, where you can stroll the historic streets and stay in a cozy inn. Whatever you choose, our list of the most romantic getaways in the USA boasts stunning landscapes, plenty of ways to be pampered, and some of the most romantic hotels in America .

Best romantic getaways in the U.S.

Sonoma County, CA

1.  Sonoma County, CA

It’s easy to swoon over Sonoma . While wine tasting is the main attraction, there's so much more to this sprawling California county. Get pampered at world-class spas (head to  Dawn Ranch  for an oasis set among the redwoods); dine your heart out at restaurants rooted in seasonal California fare (snag a seat at Healdbsurg's buzziest new opening,  Goodnight’s Prime Steak + Spirits ); or head to the coast to take in stunning ocean views at boutique hotels like  Nick's Cove  or  Timber Cove (grab a bite at their waterfront restaurants or stay the night).

Scottsdale, AZ

2.  Scottsdale, AZ

Set amid the stunning Sonoran desert, the backdrop to a vacation in Scottsdale  easily checks the romantic box. This Arizona town has long been a destination for those looking to be pampered and relax—and in recent years, has experienced a renewed sense of interest from travelers thanks to buzzy restaurants (check out FnB Restaurant and Fat Ox ), a myriad of wellness experiences, and even an up-and-coming wine scene (don't skip  Aridus Winery 's tasting room in Old Town). Couples looking for an urban retreat will enjoy a stay at the midcentury marvel that is the  Hotel Valley Ho , and for those looking to escape reality in a more remote setting, don't miss the luxurious  Sanctuary Camelback Mountain (Jay Z and Beyoncé honeymooned here, if that tells you anything.)

Kauai, HI

3.  Kauai, HI

If your version of paradise includes rugged cliffs and sunny sand, emerald hills and epic hikes, fire up your laptop and book a trip to  Kauai . The 'Garden Isle' is a verdant wonderland where you can take a helicopter ride past the Jurassic Park waterfall, kayak Hawaii's only navigable river or walk the wild Na Pali Coast—though no one will blame you for kicking back with a cocktail on the beach. For an indulgent stay, book a room at the brand-new sustainable luxury resort,  1 Hotel Hanalei Bay.

Savannah, GA

4.  Savannah, GA

Savannah  wears its charm in the open: classic homes, historic squares and impossibly photogenic moss-covered trees. But there's more to this Southern belle than gawking at her sights. Go for a stroll on Tybee Island , then dig into expertly crafted Cajun and low-country cooking at Alligator Soul (where, yes, there's gator on the menu). Finish things off at Lulu's Chocolate Bar and share a slice of the rum-brushed strawberry suspension cake.

San Juan Islands, WA

5.  San Juan Islands, WA

This Puget Sound escape—where the most populated town is just one square mile—is about escaping it all. Life on the San Juan Islands  means lighthouse strolls, coastal kayaking, visits to alpaca or lavender farms, and fresh seafood. Book a summer whale watch session and spot one of three local orca pods before bed at the Bird Rock Hotel , where loaner bikes let you explore at the right pace.

The Berkshires, MA

6.  The Berkshires, MA

The Berkshires aren't just one town but a collection of several that are quaint and charming in their way. Start with Lenox, a scenic and lush town once the home of writer Edith Wharton, and Stockbridge, a town bursting with Norman Rockwell-inspired streets. There’s also North Adams, replete with picturesque churches, and Williamstown, surrounded by mountains and farmland. Stroll together hand-in-hand along the historic downtown streets, hit a hiking trail, and relax together in a B&B: there's romance here no matter where your days (and nights) take you.

Sun Valley, ID

7.  Sun Valley, ID

No matter the time of year, the Sun Valley , Idaho region, is a perfect choice for a little romance. In the winter, ski during the day and get cozy at night; in the spring and summer, take in wildflower and waterful hikes; and when autumn rolls in, take in some of the most stunning foliage views in the country. Stay at the historic Sun Valley Resort  or the neighboring town, Ketchum, at the LimeLight Ketchum, which features a year-round heated pool and mountain views that set the mood.

New Paltz, NY

8.  New Paltz, NY

Mohonk Mountain House  in New Paltz, NY, is a gorgeous retreat two hours from NYC that dates back to 1869. Since then, Mohonk has grown enormously, evident in the varying styles of the main building as well as through the scattered wooden “summer houses” that dot the landscape. Head here for romantic Victorian rooms with wood-burning fireplaces, outstanding views from surrounding trails, live music, and events. The resort hosts occasional "Romantic Couples' Weekends" with love-themed activities for you and your beau.

New Orleans

9.  New Orleans

There's something magical about New Orleans —the cobblestone streets of the French Quarter, the 100+-year-old candlelit restaurants, the live music wafting through the air. Look past the rowdiness of Bourbon Street, and you'll find a city ripe for romance: stroll past historic mansions in the Garden District, get a cocktail at the Carousel Bar , and unwind at a luxurious hotel like the Eliza Jane .

Aspen, CO

10.  Aspen, CO

There’s no wrong time to book a trip to Aspen , a Rocky Mountain town where romantic enticements beckon all year long. From luxury hotels and sophisticated dining to hot air ballooning and legendary slopes, there’s a reason Aspen has a reputation for over-the-top thrills. Whether you’re here to ski with your partner, take on some rapids, or settle into a couple’s massage at the extravagant St. Regis (don’t miss the hotel's nightly champagne sabering, either), you’ll leave Aspen more in love than ever.

Glacier National Park, MT

11.  Glacier National Park, MT

With mountain lakes surrounded by rocky peaks, 600ft waterfalls and glaciers (expected to melt in the next 30 years), Glacier National Park deserves a place on your to-do list. Hike, horseback ride, hop a boat, spot a grizzly bear or mountain goat, and then cozy up over a fire or hearty meal. Given the range of accommodations offered—from lodges to campsites to backcountry chalets well worth the walk—this is the ideal destination to combine adventure and affection.

New York, NY

12.  New York, NY

With its relentless bustle, New York romance is about connecting with your partner amid the chaos. Go classic: Rent a rowboat in Central Park and get gussied up for dinner at La Grenouille , serving time-honored French delicacies in a flower-arrangement-filled space. Or throw tradition to the wind: Get into frisky business at the Museum of Sex or take the tram to Roosevelt Island for lofty, 360-degree city views.

Nantucket, MA

13.  Nantucket, MA

Nantucket is the perfect setting for a romance novel—or real-life romance. With white-sand beaches, cobblestone streets and New England charm everywhere you look, this tiny island (which is only 14 miles in length) is the perfect place to get away if you're looking for seaside splendor. Splurge on luxury accommodations (there are plenty to choose from, but we recommend the Wauwinet ), have a picnic on the beach or slide into a booth at a historic restaurant, or bike around the island. The high season is Memorial Day through Labor Day, but the shoulder months can be just as lovely without the crowds.

Big Sur, CA

14.  Big Sur, CA

With rolling redwood forests and cliffs jutting over turquoise water, Big Sur  is idyllic in the extreme. Splurge at the Post Ranch Inn , where your luxury bungalow is TV- and telephone-free, or snuggle up inside a yurt at Treebones . Come during the summer when you can kayak with sea otters, take a moonlit tour of the Point Sur lighthouse or stay up late for a dip in the Esalen Hot Springs .

Harpers Ferry, WV

15.  Harpers Ferry, WV

Although Harpers Ferry played a role in igniting the Civil War, today's vibe is far more romantic than revolutionary. The core of Harpers Ferry—which sits at the edge of the Shenandoah River, the Potomac River, and the Blue Ridge Mountains—is a national historic park with forts, museums, cobbled streets, and charm aplenty. You’ll also find 22 miles of hiking trails outside the city center, and in the warmer months, the town is an ideal launch point for kayaking, whitewater rafting, and tubing. It won't take long to understand why locals call West Virginia 'almost heaven.'

Martha’s Vineyard, MA

16.  Martha’s Vineyard, MA

The Obamas' go-to summer getaway, Martha's Vineyard has always charmed visitors with its windswept beaches and sweet towns. Rent a home or base yourself at Hob Knob in Edgartown, the island’s picture-perfect, oldest settlement with narrow streets, red-brick pavements and white clapboard homes. Hit the beach, browse local shops, marvel over the sunset and stuff yourself with fresh seafood—it’s not a Vineyard visit without lobster from Larsen’s Fish Market .

Mackinac Island, MI

17.  Mackinac Island, MI

Nothing beats Michigan in the summer—the crystal blue water, perfect weather, and friendly people. One of the most quaint spots in the state is  Mackinac Island , situated on Lake Huron between Michigan's upper and lower peninsulas. With stunning national parks, car-free streets, charming B&Bs, and plenty of outdoor activities, this is a place where you can lazily enjoy the island life or be active from sunrise to sunset.

Charleston, SC

18.  Charleston, SC

This picturesque Southern city doesn’t just feel like a romantic movie set; Nicholas Sparks’ The Notebook was actually filmed around Charleston . Turn it into the background of your love story as you roam the historic district, explore the vibrant dining scene and wander through the gardens at Boone Hall .

Block Island, RI

19.  Block Island, RI

Dubbed 'Island of the Little God' by the Narragansett tribe, this petite isle 12 miles off the coast of Rhode Island is a world apart from the mainland. Rent a bike or moped, grab a sandwich from Three Sisters and start discovering your favorite beach or scenic trail.

Sedona, AZ

20.  Sedona, AZ

Free your spiritual side in Sedona , a desert enclave where natural vortexes emit mystical energy. Even if communing with the Earth isn't your thing, visiting for the spectacular slot-canyon hiking and world-class accommodations is worth it. Spoil yourself in a L'Auberge de Sedona cottage complete with an outdoor shower or stay at Enchantment Resort and book a couple’s treatment at the acclaimed Mii Amo spa .

San Diego, CA

21.  San Diego, CA

With 322 days of annual sunshine, San Diego begs you to get outside and explore. Hit the waves at Pacific Beach, ride bikes along the boardwalk, charter a boat or grab a patch of sand and snuggle up with your partner. The zoo is rightfully renowned and, when you've worked up an appetite , head to the Marine Room for dinner at high tide when the Pacific crashes against the windows.

Amelia Island, FL

22.  Amelia Island, FL

Barely inside the Florida border, this Atlantic Coast barrier island hits the spot for a luxury weekend or low-key retreat. Book a room at a historic B&B or bed down overlooking the beach at the Ritz-Carlton . Then, spend your days soaking up the sun, riding horses along the shoreline or on the water on a fishing charter or sightseeing tour. Keep the camera ready for sea turtles, manatees and dolphins.

There’s so much to love about weekend trips — they’re one of my favorite ways to unwind and escape the city and hustle and bustle of IRL life for awhile (without the headache of a plane ride, and, for me since I have two dogs, dog boarding stress). Just hop in the car with some luggage, snacks, and good playlist — and we’re ready to go. If you live in California and you and your partner are looking for a fun, romantic California getaway for the weekend, there are so many good options. As an Angeleno, I’ve road-tripped around the entire state and have found incredible gems that are car rides away (some as close to an hour away from my house).

The thing that makes California such a unique vacation destination is that the state offers so much, and you can truly tailor the experience to your needs and interests, depending on what you’re looking for in a getaway. You really don’t have to travel far to find an escape from real life for a little while. You and your partner can jet off to wine country and enjoy sweeping views of vineyards, connect with the earth and sip cocktails seaside, or indulge in a luxurious spa-themed weekend.

Most Romantic California Cities for a Weekend Trip:

Depending on where you are in the country, a weekend trip might be feasible, and if you’re coming from the East Coast, you might want to allow for a little more time to adjust to the time change.

According to Lindsay Myers , travel expert, TV host, and travel planning professional, there are a few stand-out cities in the Golden State. First off, the Big Sur/ Carmel by the Sea area is a must-see. “Carmel by the sea (south of San Francisco) is a small sleepy gem of a town,” says Myers. There are “lots of boutique hotels, B&Bs, and amazing ocean views. Think cozy fireplaces and romantic walk,” she adds.

Another great feature of California is for the wine lovers. There are so many wineries and vineyards outside of Napa and Sonoma. “Paso Robles has 200 wineries and is only 30 miles from the coast,” says Myers. “You can taste wine all day and enjoy the sunset at night.” Temecula is also a popular location for wine tasting, as it boasts incredible views of the valley, and plenty of wineries to choose from in Lake Village.

Here are the 20 most romantic places to stay in Minnesota, according to Midwest Living editors.

Courtesy of Grand View Lodge

Resort culture in Minnesota is real, especially in the summer. And it's not just for families! These five resorts offer the best of romance while capturing that lake life spirit in Brainerd Lakes, the North Shore and beyond.

Grand View Lodge, Nisswa

Grand View Lodge has been welcoming guests for well over 100 years, making it one of the most iconic Minnesota resorts. Couples can book a king room in the historic lodge building or the modern 60-room boutique hotel on property. Those wanting a little more room to stretch out can rent a one-bedroom cottage to curl up by the fireplace or cook dinner together in a full kitchen. The resort is just steps away from Gull Lake where you can kayak or paddleboard together or watch the sunset from a lakeside bonfire. Grand View also just recently expanded its Glacial Waters Spa, adding a salt room for halotherapy.

Pro Tip: You can book a luxury picnic for two with Valerie Lu’s on the grounds of the resort. The picture-perfect setup includes a charcuterie board, custom cake, sparkling drinks and a 30-minute photo shoot.

Bluefin Bay, Tofte

Imagine soaking in a whirlpool tub for two with views of Lake Superior and a wood-burning fire crackling nearby—that’s exactly what you’ll find at Bluefin Bay . Book the Grand Superior Master Suite for that full experience, though many of the resort's rooms and suites include in-room fireplaces and whirlpool tubs. Two minutes down the road is Bluefin’s more-intimate Surfside resort, offering 18 modern townhome accommodations and Waves of Superior Spa.

Pro Tip: Surfside and Bluefin are right near Temperance River State Park , where you’ll find the rushing Temperance River Falls and several hiking trails.

Larsmont Cottages, Two Harbors

Located along a stretch of private Lake Superior Shoreline just south of Two Harbors, Larsmont Cottages provide a quiet and peaceful escape along Minnesota’s North Shore. Cottages and suites range in size, but the one-bedroom lakeside cottages have everything you need to set the scene for romance: a stone fireplace, Jacuzzi tub, and lake views from your private balcony. Outside the cottage, you can roast s’mores around a firepit, hit up the sauna or book a couples treatment in the massage cottage.

Pro Tip: Larsmont is part of the Odyssey Resorts family, which owns several resorts along the North Shore. If you’d prefer to be farther along the shore (Larsmont is in the southern region), Odyssey has similarly romantic properties in Lutsen and Grand Marais.

Gunflint Lodge, Grand Marais

Way up the Gunflint Trail, buried deep in Minnesota’s Northwoods, is the Gunflint Lodge —perfect for couples who want to get away from it all. Almost all of the romantic couples cabins come with two-person tubs overlooking the woods, in-room fireplaces (some wood-burning) and king beds. One even has a private sauna. Oh, and did we mention all the couples cabins are lakefront? Perched on Gunflint Lake (which shares a border with Canada), the lodge is also a perfect spot for catching the northern lights. "Even when you're here for alone time with your partner, don't overlook the great on-site programming." says Midwest Living executive editor Hannah Agran. "During our stay, we went on a fascinating morning hike through the woods with one of the lodge's naturalists."

Pro Tip: The lodge is located between two areas of the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness. They can set you up with outfitters for day or multi-day paddling trips into this remote and pristine region of Minnesota.

Madden’s, Brainerd

For the couple that loves to stay busy, Madden’s on Gull Lake is the place to be. The sprawling lakefront resort has tons of couples activities to do, including golf, tennis, croquet, trapshooting, waterskiing, biking and more. When it’s time to slow down, book a couples massage in the tranquil Spa Cottage before a romantic dinner at The Classic Grill. Many of the resort’s guest rooms and cottages feature fireplaces and lake views.

Pro Tip: Book a one-bedroom cottage or Sunset Villa in the Wilson’s Bay area of the property for in-room wood-burning fireplaces and the closest proximity to the spa.

Romantic getaways to cities provide ample opportunities for date night: great restaurants, intimate cocktail bars, theater performances. These urban hotels put you right in the action—in both the Twin Cities and Duluth—while also providing havens for romance amid the hustle.

Hewing Hotel, Minneapolis

Sauna? Spa pool? Skyline views? All on a rooftop? The Hewing Hotel in Minneapolis’ trendy North Loop neighborhood checks all those boxes and more. The rustic, woodsy theme provides a warm welcome for couples on a romantic getaway. Well-appointed rooms boast high-quality linens and mattresses as well as rain showers. On-site Tullibee restaurant is perfect for date night, where you can give full control to the chef to create a curated family-style meal for $80 per person. "I'll never forget my rooftop sauna experience here," says Midwest Living project editor Jess Hoffert. "It was in the dead of winter, and that sensation of running out of the sauna and into the freezing temps before a dip in the heated pool was invigorating."

Pro Tip: The North Loop claims some of Minneapolis’ best restaurants. Just across the street is The Monte Carlo , a 1906 steakhouse with supper club vibes (and the best sampler platter in town). Venture two blocks away to Billy After Dark , a fun and sexy speakeasy with an early aughts rap playlist and Asian-inspired drinks.

Four Seasons Minneapolis, Minneapolis

The Four Seasons Minneapolis exudes romance and luxury, and you’ll be spoiled from the moment you walk in the door. The rooms are outfitted with stunning blonde wood and floor-to-ceiling windows overlooking the city. A sleek rooftop pool provides more skyline views, along with a terrace for drinks and sunsets. My husband and I enjoyed a day at the spa—which has what might just be the prettiest indoor pool ever—as well as saunas and steam rooms for men and women. You can also book a private, guided cedar sauna experience with Cedar and Stone on the hotel’s roof.

Pro Tip: The hotel’s restaurant, Mara , is run by well-known Minneapolis chef Gavin Kaysen. Get the hummus at dinner, or go for the elevated brunch buffet on Sundays. I couldn’t get enough of the Turkish eggs—and an entire room dedicated to desserts!

Celeste of St. Paul, St. Paul

You’re in for a heavenly stay at Celeste of St. Paul . This gorgeous 1909 Beaux Arts building is a convent-turned-boutique hotel with graciously appointed rooms and suites. Celestial King Rooms include an in-room fireplace and views of the Capitol, but it’s the suites where things get really divine. The Chapel Suite occupies the chapel formerly used by the sisters of St. Agatha’s Conservatory of Music and Art, with soaring ceilings, stained glass windows, and a headboard crafted from an altar. It’s a romantic getaway like nun other.

Pro Tip: Check the show calendar at the Fitzgerald Theater, right around the corner from the Celeste. It’s the city’s oldest theater and regularly hosts bands, dance performances and other live entertainment.

Pier B Resort Hotel, Duluth

Sink into a large in-room soaking tub with views of Duluth’s iconic Aerial Lift Bridge from Pier B Resort Hotel’s King Mini Suite. The romantic room is just one of many options at this hotel on the Duluth Harbor Basin. Several rooms also have private balconies or decks. Challenge your partner to a little friendly competition on the new outdoor sports court or hop aboard a sauna on a barge docked outside the resort. During my stay, I really enjoyed relaxing in the steaming waterfront hot tub on a chilly star-flecked night, watching boats pass under the lift bridge.

Pro Tip: Stroll along the waterfront from Pier B to the popular Canal Park area of Duluth. Have cocktails at Vikre Distillery before dinner at Lake Ave Restaurant and Bar .

Kelsey Braun

Nothing says romantic getaway like a secluded cabin in the woods. These cozy and crafty cabins boast soaker tubs, saunas and stargazing opportunities in the Northwoods and the North Shore.

Cuyuna Cove and Tofte Trails, Crosby and Tofte

Wellbeing and rejuvenation define a couples getaway to Cuyuna Cove . These intimate tiny cabins sleep two comfortably in a queen bed facing floor-to-ceiling windows looking into the woods. Some cabins include an outdoor shower and a private fire pit; all cabins have private patios and access to the property’s redwood sauna. The concept was so popular that the folks behind Cuyuna launched a similar concept last year in Tofte, on Minnesota’s North Shore. The slightly larger cabins at Tofte Trails feature gorgeous tiled showers, private patios and peekaboo views of Lake Superior.

Pro Tip: Crosby is known for its 75 miles of mountain biking trails. Tofte Trails sits at the base of Onion Road, where you’ll find several trailheads for the popular Oberg Mountain hiking (and in winter, XC skiing) area.

Nature Link, Nisswa

Nature Link’s mission is for guests to put down their technology and reconnect with nature and each other—perfect for spending quality time with your partner. Tucked into the woods in Nisswa, you won’t find TVs in any of these modern cabins. What you will find: floor-to-ceiling windows with views of Clark Lake, fireplaces and self-standing soaker tubs. Outside of the cabin, spend time in the lakeside barrel sauna, grab a kayak and paddle to the resort’s private island or roast s’mores over a bonfire on the beach.

Pro Tip: Your stay at Nature Link includes bike rentals; you can use one to ride the Paul Bunyan Trail two miles into downtown Nisswa, where you can cool down with a pint at Big Axe Brewing Company .

Lilla Norr, Mora

If you’re looking for an enchanting getaway for two, Lilla Norr —which means “little north” in Swedish—offers a magical escape just 90 minutes from the Twin Cities. This restored 1978 A-frame cabin sits on 5 wooded acres along the Snake River and looks like it’s straight out of a (retro Scandi) fairytale. The idea of this romantic weekend is relaxation. Spin a vinyl on the vintage record player, curl up by the wood-burning stove and watch deer outside the window.

Pro Tip: The little Scandinavian town of Mora is the sister city to Mora, Sweden. Grab a sandwich from Downtown Deli for a picnic along the Snake River in summer, or hit up the XC ski trails at the Vasoloppet Nordic Center in winter.

Wambolts Cabins, Park Rapids

Wambolts has history, beginning as a humble fish camp in 1899. It still retains that down-to-earth vibe in its rustic cabins but recently added modern upcycled container cabins. Lounge in bed with your partner while overlooking Upper Bottle Lake from floor-to-ceiling windows. In the evening, settle into an Adirondack chair on your private roof deck to watch the sunset. This spring, Wambolts also added a beach area with an UrbanWing Sauna —a translucent sauna where you can steam without sacrificing lake views.

Pro Tip: When you book your cabin, you can also book a boat through Wambolts. The 16’ foot solar-powered boat is perfect for a sunset cruise.

Rayna Monet

Klarhet, Lutsen

Ok so not exactly a cabin, but the geodomes at Klarhet are quite possibly one of the most unique romantic accommodations you’ll find in Minnesota. These igloo-shaped domes have an entirely clear front wall (Klarhet is Swedish and Norwegian for “clarity”), so you can watch for falling stars—or if you’re lucky, the northern lights—from bed. The domes all include king beds, cotton slippers and robes, and rain showers. Klarhet also maintains a regenerative food forest (an intentional and diverse planting of edible trees, shrubs, herbs and vegetables), which they use to educate guests on sustainable gardening practices. Take a farm tour or sample some of the local delights on a charcuterie board delivered to your dome.

Pro Tip: Klarhet is just down the road from Lutsen Mountains ski resort—that means great powder days in winter, an alpine-slide in warmer seasons, or a year-round gondola ride with epic views of the Sawtooth Mountains and Lake Superior.

Bed & Breakfasts

Waking up at a bed and breakfast makes life easy—you can start the day slowly with your partner while someone else cooks breakfast. These B&Bs embrace romance with their comfortable settings and special packages.

Alexander Mansion Bed & Breakfast, Winona

Find Victorian charm in this 1886 mansion , with five elegant suites. Snag the D.C. Alexander Suite, outfitted with a canopy king bed, antique fireplace, soaking tub and a private four-season sunroom. The entire mansion is dripping with grandeur—dramatic wood paneling in the staircase and common areas, a crackling fireplace and a baby grand piano waiting to be played. The highlight of your romantic stay will surely be the B&B’s signature four-course breakfast, complete with sweet and savory options and fresh-pressed juices.

Pro Tip: Summer is a great time to visit Winona , a Mississippi River town in southern Minnesota. Festivals pack the weekends , including Mid West Music Fest (May), Steamboat Days (June), the Great River Shakespeare Festival (June and July), and the Minnesota Beethoven Festival (July).

Rivertown Inn, Stillwater

Write your own romantic story at Rivertown Inn in quaint Stillwater. Built in 1884, this restored lumber baron mansion has 10 rooms and suites, all themed after a different literary icon. Book the opulent Agatha Christie Grand Suite, inspired by the Orient Express. An entryway modeled after a European train platform and a built-in sunken king bed will make you feel like you’re riding along with the classic story—minus the murder. Other rooms include the Jane Austen Suite and the Lewis Carroll Bedchamber; several include live-flame gas fireplaces and spa tubs. Enjoy a chef’s breakfast in the morning and gather in the living area for light bites and wine during a social hour each evening.

Pro Tip: Did you know that Candyland in Stillwater was the first to trademark Chicago Mix popcorn? That’s right–not Garrett! Grab a bag and explore the quaint downtown. I’d highly recommend popping into The Tilted Tiki for a tropical cocktail or picking up a sticky-sweet pecan roll from Mon Petit Cheri .

Round Barn Farm Bed & Breakfast, Red Wing

Matthew Eberle Photography

Romance is the specialty at Round Barn Farm , a popular destination for weddings in Minnesota. The beautiful grounds also play host to a bed and breakfast with five suites. The Willow Suite has a king bed tucked into a sweet alcove finished with an 1887 William Morris willow wallpaper, a private balcony, soaking tub and gas fireplace. It even has a willow swing—right in the living room! It’s hard to make heart tubs feel cute and not cheesy, but Round Barn somehow accomplishes that in the Hearts & Flowers Suites. A pale pink heart-shaped soaker tub in a light-drenched bathroom with rose wallpaper sets the scene for romance.

Pro Tip: There’s plenty to do on the B&B’s 35 private acres. Check out the historic round barn, follow a tractor path through the woods to views of Lake Pepin, play on a wooden swing hanging from an old oak tree or pick wild blackberries in summer. You can also book an in-room massage.

Jennifer Herz

Small towns provide Hallmark-like settings for your romantic getaway to Minnesota. These three stylish hotels instantly upgrade a low-key weekend spent exploring a quaint town like Stillwater or International Falls.

Hotel Crosby, Stillwater

This modern boutique hotel in downtown Stillwater blends comfort and luxury, taking inspiration from Stillwater’s logging history. Wood accents mixed with funky art make the rooms (especially those with private balconies) an inviting place to stay all day but there are also plenty of options to go out and play. Book an appointment at the on-site spa and salon to pamper yourself and your partner, or slip into the steamy rooftop hot tub open year-round. An on-site tapas restaurant and bar with rare whiskeys enhance the evening.

Pro Tip: The St. Croix River separates Stillwater from Wisconsin. Walk into the neighboring state via the historic, pedestrian-only Stillwater Lift Bridge or rent a motorcycle via Hotel Crosby for a scenic cruise between state lines.

Cantilever Hotel, International Falls

Take your love to new heights—and by new heights I mean just about as far north as you can go before hitting Canada. This laidback, cool hotel is the perfect home base for outdoor lovers who aren’t keen to rough it. Located above a distillery, couples can go out and explore Voyageurs National Park during the day and come home to a stiff drink and a comfy bed at night. Clawfoot tubs and pillowtop mattresses provide all the luxury that camping and houseboating (a popular Voyageurs activity) does not.

Pro Tip: The national park service —as well as several other private operators —offers Rainy Lake boat tours of Voyageurs National Park. Choose among different lengths and destinations and hop aboard for an intro to VNP that will get you back to International Falls in time for dinner.

St. James Hotel, Red Wing

Open since 1875, this historic hotel leans into timeless charm. Rooms blend traditional decor with contemporary amenities. Suites feature in-room fireplaces and the Whirlpool Collection rooms have, you guessed it, whirlpool baths. Make sure to select a Riverside room for glimpses of the Mississippi. "The hotel's Scarlet Kitchen and Bar has one of my favorite patios along the Great River Road," says Midwest Living project editor Jess Hoffert. "Nothing beats sipping an Aperol spritz while watching the occasional riverboat pass through on a summer afternoon.” Those looking to up the romance should book the Couples Getaway package, which includes a robe to take home, a 30-minute salt room session at the spa, a fruit and cheese tray, and a bottle of champagne.

Pro Tip: The hotel is now owned by Red Wing Shoe Company , which has been crafting fine leather boots and shoes since 1905. Pick out a pair for your partner at the shop down the street.

17 Romantic Cabin Getaways in the U.S. for a Couples Trip

Cozy lodgings guaranteed to spark love.

best getaway trips for couples

Romance is rather subjective. What appeals to some pairs certainly won't entice others. But then again, certain things — sights, activities, feelings — are objectively couple-y. Slipping away to a cozy cabin in the woods definitely falls into that category. It's the perfect setting for peace, quiet, and canoodling.

For couples wanting alone time, a stand-alone cabin is a pretty tempting option. You can hike, play board games, and, in some cases, order room service (many of these private accommodations sit on resorts with ample amenities). Maybe you light a fire and snuggle up under a blanket, or perhaps warm weather allows for sharing a bottle of wine on the porch. Either way, these romantic getaways across the U.S. are sure to stoke the flames of romance.

1. Blackberry Mountain, Tennessee

Blackberry Mountain is an exquisite marriage of luxury, wellness, and rugged, natural beauty. Even the most persnickety of pairs will love this exclusive hideaway in the Great Smoky Mountains . It's five-star without the fuss. The secluded Watchman Cabins — located at the peak of the mountain, a 10-minute drive or endorphin-boosting hike from the main lodge — set the scene for romance with comfy king-size beds, wood-burning stoves, and Adirondack chairs for taking in views of the rolling hills that surround it.

2. Dunton Hot Springs, Colorado

A restored ghost town ringed by an alpine valley, Dunton Hot Springs casts a spell on all who visit. Of course, the bewitching setting isn't the only reason couples fall in love with this Colorado Rockies resort. Circling a communal bathhouse, hand-hewn log cabins — many of which were built by miners back in the 1800s — are every bit the wood-paneled film set you envision when you think of the old Wild West. These, however, are made for a discerning modern audience.

For added romance, opt into the full couple's experience : Champagne upon arrival, massages, and a half-day guided activity (horseback riding, fly fishing, etc.) of your choice.

3. The Hideout, Wyoming

Horseback riding and handsome cowboys are the stuff of Western romance novels but the norm at The Hideout , a lodge and working cattle ranch 60 miles from the south entrance of Yellowstone National Park . Built for privacy and pastoral pleasures, the log cabins here showcase wood furnishings, dreamy king-sized beds, and wildlife-themed art. On the property, guests can trail ride or hike through the peaceful Wyoming wilderness. Packing a picnic to enjoy while taking in views of the surrounding mountains and plains makes the experience even more idyllic.

4. Getaway Mount Adams, Washington

Getaway Mount Adams rolls so much Pacific Northwest charm into a tiny, enticing package. The pint-size cabins are a splendid spot to snuggle, stargaze, and soak in the mountain views. Of course, with scenery this spectacular, an outdoor fire pit, and s'mores supplies available for purchase, you probably won't hole up inside no matter how enticing the all-wooden, nestlike interior. Just a two-hour drive from Portland, this complex of cabins makes for a great break from the hustle and bustle.

5. Glen Oaks, California

Big Sur is one of the best glamping spots in California . But if sleeping in a tent doesn't sound all that appealing, a cozy cabin under towering redwoods might be the perfect place for you to stay. Even though the picture-perfect abodes at Glen Oaks come equipped with wood burning stoves and truly cabinesque design features like antler chandeliers, the pair of clawfoot soaking tubs that await in the private courtyard make it almost impossible to spend much of the stay inside.

6. The 1968, New York

Cabin enthusiasts — and design lovers, in general — are guaranteed to fall hard for this cedar timber cabin. Thoughtfully restored with swoon-worthy details like "owl eye" windows, "more angles than a maths lesson," and "more wooden slats than the surrounding trees," according to the property, The 1968 in East Hampton is packed with cabin comforts and romantic getaway-worthy amenities: a record player, wood burner, and beach essentials for those interested in walking 25 minutes to Louse Point. This place is tucked away enough to provide a respite from the urban buzz while still offering easy access to shops and restaurants should date night call.

7. The Ranch at Rock Creek, Montana

Rough and tumble meets romance at The Ranch at Rock Creek , a 19th-century homestead-turned-luxe all-inclusive dude ranch . Couples can bond over a shared passion for horseback riding or learn a new skill like trout fishing, as well as play out their pioneer fantasies in cozy creekside cabins with in-floor hydronic heat and outdoor soaking tubs. While there, you and your partner will want to sign up for a couple's massage — either in your own cabin or at The Ranch's Wild West-inspired spa.

8. Eastwind, New York

Courtesy of Eastwind

The ideal Catskills escape, Eastwind Windham is a tranquil and endlessly romantic place to unwind and reconnect without distraction. It's made even more attractive by its 10 photogenic A-frame cabins. The property calls it "almost camping" — some of the cabins are spacious enough to have triple, fold-out doors and an indoor writing nook; others are big enough to accommodate only a queen-sized bed (Don't worry: You get your own very clean, very stylish detached bathroom). It's got all the charm and romance of "roughing it" but with four-season appeal and a real roof over your head.

9. Twin Farms, Vermont

Anyone who appreciates bucolic settings and a bit of luxury will find the 1795-era farmhouse now deemed Twin Farms endearing. The freestanding cabins, which are utterly flawless because everything at this Relais & Châteaux property is executed to perfection, flaunt fieldstone fireplaces, wood stoves, hot tubs, and floor-to-ceiling windows for gazing out upon the woodland glory spanning 300 acres. Just outside, couples will find a picturesque estate to explore at their leisure.

10. Sorrel River Ranch, Utah

About 30 minutes from Arches National Park in Moab is another, more private playground for epic red-rock adventures. Of course, not every moment of a romantic getaway needs to be action-packed. Couples staying at Sorrel River Ranch , a resort on 240 acres, get to relax and reconnect in custom-built cabins with fireplaces, private verandas, rocking chairs, and views of the Colorado River at every turn. There's hardly a cozier place to rest and recover between ambitious jaunts out to the local rock formations.

11. Sterling Ridge Resort, Vermont

Courtesy of Sterling Ridge Resort

Sterling Ridge Resort showcases the best of Vermont. Its one-bedroom cabins are warm, cozy, and rustic with amenities like wood stoves and whirlpool tubs. If you do decide to venture outside, there's a magical mix of waterfront recreation, hiking, biking, and farm tours, plus apple picking and leaf peeping in the fall . The resort even has its own maple syrup-making operation. There are a number of cabins on the property, including big ones used as event space, but with 370 acres at your fingertips, you and your partner should have no trouble finding privacy on the sprawling Jeffersonville estate.

12. Hidden Pond, Maine

At Hidden Pond , a 60-acre retreat ensconced by leafy trees in a quiet corner of Kennebunkport, the cabins are dubbed "hideaways." That should give you a pretty good idea of what to expect here: privacy, peace, and homespun comforts. Each individually decorated hideaway has its own personality and quirks. Guests who want to take advantage of the on-property Tree Spa may want to indulge in a romantic 60- or 90-minute couple's massage, which comes with a bottle of bubbly.

13. The Resort at Paws Up, Montana

The greatest adventure is falling in love, hopeless romantics would argue, but a getaway to The Resort at Paws Up ranks as a close second. Hugged by 37,000 acres of majestic Montana wilderness , this luxury ranch resort woos couples with its endless string of outdoor activities and irresistible timber cabins featuring dual bathroom vanities (important if you've ever traveled with your S.O.) and outdoor hot tubs. Apart from the accommodation, there are 100 miles of trails to explore on foot or by horse. Plan a winter stay here for unmatched fairytale-like scenery.

14. Cedar Greenhouse Cabin, Oregon

Courtesy of Glamping Hub

This 300-square-foot greenhouse-turned- glamping cabin is a tiny slice of paradise that's perfectly sized for a couple. Expect 360-degree windows, in true greenhouse style, but enough privacy to not feel shy. The cabin has a cozy seating area with a cedar hot tub, a sleeping loft with a glass ceiling primed for stargazing, and natural light galore. There's also a barbecue grill and campfire pit for romantic summer nights.

15. La Luna Cabin, California

A contemporary cabin that captures the wild scenery and spirit of Joshua Tree , La Luna sits on five acres of untamed high desert. Draws for couples include side-by-side outdoor soaking tubs, best used during those watercolor sunsets so emblematic of California, and an outdoor dining table for airy al fresco dinners. Remote as it feels, the cabin is just a 10-minute drive from Old Town Yucca Valley and downtown Joshua Tree.

16. Pisgah Highlands, North Carolina

Sean Pavone / Getty Images

Pisgah Highlands is a complex of beautiful and remote cabins tucked away in North Carolina's Pisgah National Forest, part of the Appalachian Mountains that also houses a portion of the iconic Blue Ridge Parkway. Book a fall getaway at the off-grid cabin, available on Airbnb , for incredible views of the forest-draped hills exploding with autumnal color. The cabin's star feature is a glass garage door that opens out onto a large, wraparound deck. Lovebirds might be inclined to draw it on a crisp morning and sit out with their coffee while admiring the view.

17. Caroline Cabin, Oklahoma

John Elk III / Getty Images

Design enthusiasts drawn to the chic farmhouse aesthetic will swoon over the shiplap and giant windows that adorn this Oklahoma oasis. The windows of Caroline Cabin allow natural light to flood the wide-open interior, illuminating the natural wood beams that run through the house. A couple's getaway here is made romantic by two cozy stone fireplaces — one in the living room and another out on the colossal deck — an oversized soaking tub (with a woodland view, no less), and getting out for some fresh air at the nearby Beavers Bend State Park , Broken Bow's crown jewel.

Here comes the Caribbean sun.

Paul McCartney and his wife, Nancy Shevell, went for a dip in the Caribbean Sea during a vacation in St. Barts Wednesday.

The pair looked relaxed as they soaked up the sun and swam in the turquoise waters.

For the beach day, the Beatles musician rocked a black rashguard with multi-colored swim trunks that appeared to display a sunset design.

On the other hand, Shevell wore a pink, orange and white rashguard paired with a black swim skirt.

“They seemed as loved up as ever during their trip. Paul looked super fit and youthful for his age as he made sure to enjoy regular swims and he only had eyes for Nancy as they floated around in the waves together,” a source told the MEGA photo agency of their trip, per People .

Amid their outing, McCartney was photographed swimming with a pal and talking to him while draped in an orange towel.

St. Barts seems to be a favorite vacation spot for the couple as they were photographed relaxing on its shoreline in March 2021 and March 2023.

McCartney, 81, and Shevell, 64, began dating in 2007 and married four years later.

Although they normally keep their romance under wraps, the singer opened up about how he contributes to their marriage in a February 2023 post on his website .

“I see [my role as a husband] as just trying to be good to my wife Nancy and trying to be considerate and romantic,” he explained.

“I completely overdo Valentine’s Day! mean, there’s not just one card, there are cards hidden around the room, and sometimes things even spill into the next day – it’s completely silly. If there’s an excuse to have some fun, I overdo it!”

“I try to be helpful as a husband too,” he continued. “If there’s a problem, I like to be the guy that will lend some strength to it.

“I’m always very happy to be the person Nancy relies on, and to be her strength when she goes through tough times.”

Paul was first married to the late Linda McCartney from 1969 to 1998, and to Heather Mills from 2002 until 2008 (they had separated two years prior their divorce).
