Feel the tropical sun on your face and the breeze in your hair on a luxurious cruise from Florida to The Bahamas with Celebrity. White sand beaches and aquamarine seas await, with plenty of chances to snorkel over coral reefs in rainbow colors, see dolphins swimming in the wild, and relax in the shade of a palm tree with an ice-cold rum punch.

From Nassau, head for the Aquaventure Waterpark at the glamorous Atlantis Resort for thrilling slides, a chance to see sharks in Predator Lagoon, and a lazy river ride. In Bimini, join a catamaran cruise along the coast, snorkel over a wreck, or try your hand at sport fishing. Key West, meanwhile, is packed with quirky local history, lively pubs, and historic homes. Immerse yourself in Caribbean bliss on a cruise to the Bahamian capital of Nassau. Snorkel over the remarkable Rainbow Reef. Shop for locally made souvenirs at the Straw Market. Sample local rum and fresh seafood at a beachside restaurant. A cruise to Nassau offers the perfect combination of sun-soaked indulgence, immaculate beaches, and exclusive.

Beautiful Bimini, fringed with white sand beaches, mangroves, and coconut palms, basks in the aquamarine Caribbean. This is a paradise for snorkeling among shoals of dazzling tropical fish, deep-sea fishing, wreck diving, and blissful days on gorgeous beaches. Visit the enchanting Dolphin House Museum, lovingly built by hand out of shells, beach glass, and other recycled materials by a local preservationist, or hand-feed stingrays at Honeymoon Harbor.

Quirky, bohemian Key West fits into just seven square miles and is the southernmost city of the continental United States. Visit the Museum of Art & History, and learn about the island’s literary heritage at Ernest Hemingway’s house. Kayak around the green shade of mangroves, snorkel over coral reefs, and cycle around the island, stopping to sample Key lime pie. Key West is famed for its pubs, too and you can get into the party spirit on a pub crawl along lively Duval Street.

Top Shore Excursions on Cruises from Florida to Bahamas

Atlantis aquaventure.

No shore excursion will satisfy everyone in your group quite like a day at the fantasy-like Atlantis. This mega-resort offers activities for the entire family, from a 141-acre water park for thrill seekers to a stretch of pristine beach for relaxation, plus pools and playgrounds designed for the little ones. Take a break from the sun and stroll through the resort’s impressive marine exhibits, home to over 50,000 animals.

Snorkel Over The S.S. Sapona Wreck

The S.S. Sapona sank in 1926 and has been left on the seabed to allow marine life to colonize the hull. Join a snorkeling adventure here and you’ll be amazed at the power of nature, where dazzling corals are thriving. Swim among shoals of fish in every color of the spectrum, including angelfish and butterflyfish. After your adventure, relax with an ice-cold rum punch.

Cycle Around Key West

Join a cycling tour around pretty Key West, led by a local guide who knows all the insider information and stories of colorful local characters. You’ll pedal through leafy lanes and past enchanting clapboard homes, and see Hemingway’s house, the old cemetery, Higgs Beach, and the buoy which marks the southernmost outpost of the United States. The cycling is flat and easy, but you’ll still earn yourself a tempting slice of tangy Key lime pie, a specialty here.

Cruises From Tampa to The Bahamas

Sail away to paradise on a cruise from Tampa to The Bahamas. You’ll have blissful days to sunbathe on Bimini’s white sands or snorkel over pristine coral reefs. Explore historic Nassau and feast on conch fritters washed down with rum punch. Some itineraries also call at quirky, arty Key West, where gingerbread mansions line palm-shaded streets, while others visit Cozumel, famed for its beaches, underwater world, and nearby Mayan antiquities.

Whichever itinerary you choose, a Bahamas cruise from Tampa with Celebrity Cruises will leave you renewed and refreshed. Sunbathe by the sparkling pool or join a class in the Fitness Center. Enjoy made-to-order burgers poolside and world-class cuisine in the many restaurants around the ship. In the evenings, be thrilled by the skilled mixologists at the Martini Bar, or unwind at the dreamy Sunset Bar as scarlet and gold streak the sky.

Itineraries

Bustling city life blends with a laid-back tropical atmosphere in the historic capital of The Bahamas. Admire the 18th-century Queen’s Staircase and the lush blooms of the Retreat Gardens. Shop for handmade crafts at the Straw Market. Unwind on the powder-white sands of Pearl Island in a private cabana and cool off in the aquamarine waters around Blue Lagoon Island. Families will love Aquaventure at Atlantis Paradise Island, a playground of thrilling waterslides, rapids, and lazy river rides.

Sleepy Bimini was Hemingway’s former retreat, and like the writer, you can try sport fishing here. You’ll also have a chance to swim with wild dolphins, hand-feed stingrays at Honeymoon Harbor, or snorkel over the mysterious Bimini Road, a line of giant boulders on the seafloor that some say is part of the Lost City of Atlantis. Check out the Dolphin House Museum, built by a local historian entirely from sea glass, shells, and other materials recovered from the sea.

Lokono Cove is the name of the retail area coming to Carnival's Celebration Key on Grand Bahama island when it opens in summer 2026. (Carnival Cruise Line)

MIAMI BEACH — Carnival Cruise Line has released another round of updates on what travelers can expect when its new private destination Grand Bahama Celebration Key opens.

Debuting in summer 2025, the port of call will be welcoming ships from Florida ports Port Canaveral, PortMiami, Tampa and Jacksonville as well as six other U.S. ports.

The 369-acre site less than 20 miles east of Freeport will be the first dedicated to Carnival Cruise Line, although Carnival ships have used sister line destinations Princess Cays and Half Moon Cay for years.

The largest port construction project in the line’s history will be carved into five segments the company calls portals, and Carnival released details about the third one tied to retail, an artisan village called Lokono Cove.

Named in deference to the native Lucayan language, “lokono” means “the people.” It was the winning selection from Grand Bahamas resident Deidre Rahming, who was on hand in Miami Beach with an entourage from the Bahamian government on Tuesday at the Seatrade Cruise Global conference.

She received a check for $5,000 from Carnival and a future day pass for the resort, which won’t normally be open to visitors from the island. The line says at least 300 jobs will be generated for locals serving the cruise guests.

Lokono Cove will have kiosks and stores alongside “an authentic Bahamian artisan market” showcasing local craftsmanship, according to Carnival Cruise Line President Christine Duffy. Beyond the items for sale, the space will have music and murals to enhance the space, and local food.

“Lokono Cove will be a treasure trove – a place for our guests to immerse themselves in the spirit of the Bahamas and find locally inspired keepsakes, symbols of paradise they can share with loved ones, or cherish for themselves for years to come,” said Duffy said/ “Honoring the beauty and culture of the Bahamas is integral to our plans for Celebration Key, and that will be on display throughout Lokono Cove.”

The space also will be the excursion gateway for visitors to explore Grand Bahama.

It’s the third name drop by Carnival following the reveal of welcome area Paradise Plaza and adult-friendly area Calypso Lagoon. The final two space names and details, which will be a family-friendly area and an adults-only private area, will be revealed later.

The site will also have a south-facing mile-long beachfront expanse and massive freshwater inland lagoon the line says is the largest in the Bahamas and Caribbean.

Paradise Plaza features a rainbow-colored walkway through a sunshine entranceway with a 10-story “Suncastle” as a centerpiece. The welcome area is the place to book the day’s activities including cabanas, water sports and shore excursions. The area will also feature a Bahamian-themed fountain and ice cream shop.

Calypso Lagoon falls just to the west, home to the sport court and freshwater lagoon and lounging options galore. It’s home to a bar with 50 swings that let visitors dip their feet into the water, and just one of many bars serving the space and two full-service restaurants and other casual snack shacks. And adults-only area of the portal will feature a swim-up bar with a DJ, food trucks and more lounging options.

Future expansion will build beyond the five portals including the construction of a water park.

The port of call will open with one dock capable of handling its largest ships, the 6,000-passenger Excel class, including Port Canaveral-based Mardi Gras and Carnival Celebration out of Miami.

The line announced this year a $100 million plan to expand that with a second dock so that it could handle up to four such ships beginning in 2026. That expansion, which grows the line’s investment to $600 million so far, means it expects nearly 4 million passengers to visit the site annually by 2028, an average of 11,000 visitors every day. For now, it has more than 500 itineraries planned among 18 ships available to book.

Other U.S. ports visiting the new site are Galveston, Texas; Baltimore; Norfolk, Virginia; Mobile, Alabama, Charleston, S.C. and New Orleans.

“As is fitting for our plans for Grand Bahama island, our vision for Celebration Key is quite grand, and we’re already thinking about the next phase of expansion and development,” said Duffy when the pier expansion was announced. “Building the second pier now allows us to implement growth plans and build itineraries with certainty, and signals to the local community just how important this development is to Carnival Cruise Line and the future of the island.”

Carnival Cruise Line sets its sights on new Bahamas port of call

Carnival to open grand bahama celebration key in summer of 2025.

MIAMI BEACH, Fla. — Carnival Cruise Line has released another round of updates on what travelers can expect when its new private destination Grand Bahama Celebration Key opens.

I only book a Disney cruise if it's going to the company's private island, Castaway Cay

  • I've taken eight Disney cruises, and I always book a sailing that stops at  Castaway Cay .
  • Castaway Cay is the company's private island and I love its adults-only beach area.
  • You can buy exclusive merch on the island and see Disney characters in special themed costumes.

Insider Today

Cruise bookings are predicted to reach record highs this year, but not all itineraries are created equally — especially if you're looking to sail with Disney Cruise Line.

Over the past decade, I've taken eight Disney cruises with my family and friends. When I book, I always make sure Disney's private island in the Bahamas, Castaway Cay, is on the port of call.

Here's why you might want to do the same.

I love that the ship docks right at the island, so there are no tender ships involved

One of the biggest perks of Castaway Cay is that the ship docks right at the island.

Some other cruise line's private islands, like Norwegian's Great Stirrup Cay, don't have a dock, so cruisers must take tender ships (small boats) from the cruise ship to the island.

I hate taking tender ships, which can feel like a bit of a time sink, so this is a big bonus to me.

Getting around the island is easy with the complimentary tram

Castaway Cay is about 1,000 acres — though not all of it's developed — so it can take a while to talk to and from the ship to different spots on the island.

Fortunately, the island has a complimentary tram that I always use to get around the island.

The tram takes cruisers from a station near the ship to two other tram stops for the family beaches, and one tram stop at the adults-only beach .

This makes getting around the island with all of my beach gear easy.

Related stories

Speaking of gear, at Castaway Cay, cruisegoers can borrow free towels as soon as they get off of the ship. There are plenty of towel-return stations around the island, so I also never have to carry wet, sandy towels back on the ship.

I always stop to see the Disney characters in their cute beachwear

I enjoy seeing the Disney characters on the ship, but love seeing Mickey and his pals even more at Castaway Cay.

Characters usually meet in the morning from around 9 a.m. until 11 a.m., but exact times can always be found on the Disney Cruise Line app.

The best part about seeing the characters is that the lines to take pictures with them are never long. On a recent sailing, I saw Mickey Mouse, Minnie Mouse, Goofy, and Pluto all in 30 minutes. That would never happen in a Disney park.

And if you're a fellow character hunter like me, Mickey and the gang all have Castaway Cay exclusive outfits, which are adorable and make for great family photos.

I always take advantage of every chance to hang out at the adults-only beach

One thing I love about Disney Cruise Line and Castaway Cay is that there are plenty of adults-only spaces where kids are strictly not allowed. On the island, that spot is Serenity Bay Beach.

This peaceful chair-lined beach is a quiet spot away from the family beach, where I can sit back and enjoy the view or take a chair down to the water and let the waves crash over me.

Plus, just off Serenity Bay Beach is a fun beachside bar serving up drinks and snacks.

There's also the adults-only lunch spot where I always enjoy a beachside barbecue. My favorite things on the lunch menu are the ribs and macaroni salad .

Before returning to the ship, I send a postcard from the island and check out the special merchandise

I always make a point to stop in at the various shops near the family beach to see the Castaway Cay merchandise. On a recent trip, the shops had everything from spirit jerseys and T-shirts to Christmas ornaments and swimsuits.

And, before I head back to the ship, I stop at the Castaway Cay post office to send postcards back home.

The postcards I use can be found in the desk drawer of Disney Cruise Line staterooms, and are free to take. If you don't want to send the cute postcards off, you can also keep them as souvenirs.

Carnival cruise ship returns to Florida after funnel fire

TAMPA, Fla. (WFLA) — A Carnival cruise ship that caught fire over the weekend safely returned to Florida on Monday.

Video from WESH showed the Carnival Freedom bringing passengers back to Port Canaveral around 7:30 a.m.

The ship’s funnel caught fire off the coast of the Bahamas on Saturday.

“The ship’s fire response team was quickly activated, and the ship’s captain also turned the vessel towards the heavy rain in the area to maximize the efforts to put out the flames. Eyewitnesses reported the possibility of a lightning strike and that is being investigated but cannot yet be confirmed,” Carnival told WFLA in a statement on Saturday.

A portion of the funnel fell onto Deck 10. The crew asked passengers to avoid balconies and open decks for safety.

Carnival said two crew members who extinguished the fire were treated for minor smoke inhalation. No guests were injured.

The cruise line had to cancel the Freedom’s next two voyages , departing on March 25 and March 29, out of Port Canaveral.

Guests scheduled for those cruises will be issued a full refund and a future cruise credit, Carnival said.

The ship will go to the Freeport shipyard on Monday to undergo repairs.
