WorldTour team bikes 2022: The complete list

An updated look at what the pros will be using at the Tour de France along with the season's remaining races

Words: Joseph Delves

Mmmm. New and shiny things. While pandemic-related delays have made getting hold of bikes tricky for many, plenty of teams are now equipped with the machines they’ll be riding for the coming season. However, this year there’s been a marked reduction in the chopping and changing of suppliers, with most teams seemingly keen to hold onto any sponsors they already have. This early in the season is also a slow time of year for new models, so most squads are currently making do with new paint jobs rather than redesigned bikes. Expect this to change as the weather and the racing hots up. Below you’ll find all the latest 2022 season team bikes that have broken cover. Expect any stragglers to be updated as newer versions arrive on the scene.

Pinarello Dogma F, Pinarello Bolide

The 2022 season appears to be the year Ineos finally parts ways with its old-fashioned brakes. Is this because quicker wheel changes are now no longer considered a marginal gain? Could it be related to the fact Pinarello’s bikes are now a bit lighter? Who can say? Either way, in both formats, Pinarello’s Dogma remains the world’s most winning bicycle. Unusually, rather than split its range, Pinarello employs the Dogma to cover both lightweight and aero duties. Updated last year in time for the Tour, this latest model supersedes the F12 and is dubbed simply the Dogma F. Tweaked rather than rebuilt from scratch, it’s lighter and stiffer than any previous Dogma, plus it’s now also wireless-only. Still being offered with either rim or disc brakes, the fact that you can now build it almost to the UCI’s 6.8 kg weight limit in either format will likely leave Tadej Pogačar and Colnago as the peloton's last advocates of traditional callipers.

You can read about the bike's launch here .

Formerly known as Boels–Dolmans, it’s lucky the mighty SD Worx team has so many national and world champions in its ranks, if only because their jerseys water down the effect of that purple kit.  Weirdly, applied to the squad’s Specialized S-Works bicycles the unusual combo of red, black, and purple is significantly more appealing.

With Specialized recently aeroifying its Tarmac and killing off the Venge, the SD Worx riders will spend the most time aboard this all-rounder, allowing them to save the more forgiving Roubaix for bumpier Classics. Following Demi Vollering winning what's likely to be the last ever La Course by Le Tour de France, this year the team will be back targeting the extended eight-day women's Tour.

Intermarché - Wanty - Gobert team bike

uci pro tour teams 2022

How Intermarché-Wanty-Gobert’s kit manages to accommodate so many clashing logotypes and yet still look the business I don’t know.  Its bikes, produced by German firm Cube, also look very nice. A lot of this is down to the Newmen wheels. Pasted with perhaps the nicest of the almost twenty different fonts dotted across rider, bike, and kit, their spinning logos can’t help but make the squad’s riders look fast.

With Intermarché-Wanty-Gobert bringing Cube bikes with it when it levelled-up to WorldTour in 2021, this is only the second time its machines will have been seen at this level. With the brand’s Litening model likely to do most of the work, the Aerium will get held back for time trials.

Specialized S-Works Tarmac SL7, Specialized S-Works Shiv

Already sponsoring the mighty SD Worx and Deceuninck-Quick Step teams, Bora-Hansgrohe represents Specialized’s cheeky side-bet.  Having already convinced riders the world over to max-out their credit card on a new extractor hood for their cooker and shower for their bathroom, the influence of Peter Sagan has probably helped shift a few bikes too.

Human Powered Health

uci pro tour teams 2022

Felt AR, Felt FR, Felt DA

A USA-based team with a USA-based bike supplier. Californian firm Felt supplies bikes to both Human Powered Health's men's and women's teams. However, it's just the women who will be competing in the most significant events, thanks to their WorldTour licence. Matching the squad's orange kit, the team's bikes are slightly more restrained, limiting themselves to just orange and black rather than adding purple into the mix, as do their jerseys.

Unsurprisingly, Felt's AR is the more aero of its two road bikes, while the DA is just for time trials. Interestingly, from what we've seen the team seem to be racing on Sram's second-tier Force groupset. However, seeing as their bikes probably make the weight cut anyway, saving a few quid on parts is likely to come with little in the way of drawbacks.

Repping gambling, household fixatives and proper bike racing. Belgian team Lotto-Soudal is the oldest cycling team in the world, and perhaps also the coolest. Looking to add more victories to the thousand or so it’s already snatched, this year both its men’s and women’s squads will continue to employ Ridley bicycles.

Giant TCR Advanced SL Disc, Giant Propel Advanced SL Disc, Giant Trinity Advanced Pro Team BikeExchange continue to live up to its name with a third bicycle sponsor in as many years. So out goes Italian firm Bianchi, in comes Taiwanese behemoth Giant. Giving both men’s and women’s squads a whole new set of toys to play with, the team has decided to paint each in either pink or blue, so no one gets confused as to whose is whose. Regardless of colour, both sets of riders are likely to find themselves spending the majority of their time aboard the aerodynamic Propel, while climbers like Simon Yates will reach for the more slender TCR Advanced SL Disc when things get hilly. Recently relaunched as a stand-alone brand, the team are also expected to be using Cadex’s hookless and tubeless wheels. .

However, bringing it in line with the similarly UAE-backed men’s team, its riders will take on the 2022 season aboard new bikes. Migrating from one Italian brand to another, its riders will switch from Cipollini to Colnago.

in 2021 French outfit AG2R Citröen Team switched from Eddy Merckx Cycles to Swiss maker BMC. This left the newly refocused team chasing the Classics aboard the brand’s latest Teammachine SLR01 while tackling any time-trials they might find themselves presented with on the Timemachine 01 (the time trial specific Timemachine that is, not to be confused with the Timemachine Road).

In an unusual twist, the sponsorship arrangement means they'll be riding Campagnolo groupsets, which is a pairing of brand and groupset we haven't seen since the days of Phonak.

While the radically shaped S5 is the most distinctive of Cervelo's bicycles, it was the more conventional-looking machine spotted beneath Primoz Roglic this April that got bike nerds twitching.

Eventually revealed as the new R5, it remains Cervelo's most classically styled bicycle. Now slicker and more versatile than the former self, it's also spawned a cyclocross-specific variant, the R5-CX  - good news for multi-discipline stars Wout van Aert and and  Marianne  Vos.

As I’m sure they’ll be thrilled to discover, it’s not escaped my notice how handsome the Cofidis lot are looking this year. From team kit to personal grooming, the whole shebang is a vast improvement on previous iterations. Having swapped bikes a few times in recent years, this year they’ve also stuck with De Rosa, which is a good move because De Rosa bikes are also devilishly handsome.

Canyon-Sram

Canyon Aeroad, Canyon Ultimate, Canyon Speedmax Despite having parted company with Rapha, Canyon-Sram continues to be the best turned-out team in the peloton. Matching its Astral Burn jerseys designed by Ultan Coyle, the team's bikes also get similarly striking liveries. Continuing the diamonds found on the team’s sleeves down onto the legs of their forks, the riders get a mix of both mauve and white bikes, depending on the model used. Home to established powerhouses Katarzyna Niewiadoma and Chloé Dygert, the Canyon-Sram riders will be using the mauve Ultimate CF when in the hills and the dangerously sharp looking Aeroad across flatter terrain. Provided by direct-to-consumer brand Canyon bicycles, they’re sure to provoke envy from amateur racers and hatred from bike shop owners in equal measure. Time trials, of which the team has more than a few riders capable of winning, will get covered by the firm’s Speedmax. Replicating both the bikes and kit list of the similarly outfitted Movistar squad, we think Canyon-Sram definitely has the edge when it comes to styling.

Colnago V3rs, Colnago K-One

Now the winner of two back-to-back Tours, Tadej Pogačar is the latest rider to help Colnago add another win to its extensive collection. Coming after something of a drought for the Italian firm, Ernesto has certainly got his money’s worth. Repeatedly switching between disc and rim brakes to tailor the weight of his bike depending on the stage, he’s one of the last great advocates for rim braking. Happy to supply him with either technology, Colnago provides him with the V3rs for road stages and the K-One time trials. On occasions, like during the decisive stage of the 2020 Tour de France, you might even see him using both in a single day.

Often switching to the disc version for training or muckier races, all UAE Team Emirates’ bikes come finished off with equally Italian Campagnolo wheels and Record EPS gruppos.

FDJ Nouvelle Aquitaine Futuroscope

uci pro tour teams 2022

Before we get onto bikes, how cool would it be to be sponsored by a theme park? Even if that theme park had a weird educational bent and instead of rides was based around multimedia cinema shows, and if I remember correctly from my last visit in the 90s, included a soundtrack provided by the Pet Shop Boys?

Pretty cool huh? Not cool like Universal Studios Hollywood, but still good.

Anyway, continuing its dedication to all things French, the FDJ Nouvelle Aquitaine Futuroscope team has paired with Dijon-based Lapierre to supply its bikes. While the Aircode would seem an obvious all-around choice, the team also regularly employs the more swoopy and forgiving Xelius. With the Aerostorm doing for time trials, all come decked-out with Shimano Dura-Ace groupsets and wheels.

Groupama - FDJ

Lapierre Aircode, Lapierre Xelius, Lapierre Aerostorm

Like its sister-squad, FDJ Nouvelle Aquitaine Futuroscope, the Groupama - FDJ men race on French-designed Lapierre bikes. These now include an updated version of the Xelius. Trialled at the Critérium du Dauphiné, this latest third version of the firm's lightweight platform retains the unusual chainstay configuration, but now also benefits from much cleaner hidden cable routing.

Also sporting a new carbon cockpit, tube shapes across the bike have also been tweaked to make it a little more aero. Arriving done up in matt black and hung about with PRO components and Shimano wheels, they're significantly more handsome than previous versions.

Trek-Segafredo

The clue is in the name. Caffeine and bicycle pedalling outfit Trek-Segafredo makes the unsurprising choice to stick with the eponymous Wisconsin-based brand. Listing three possible models alongside the time-trial-specific SpeedConcept, these are the slinky Émonda, versatile Madone, and cobble-capable Domane.

World Champion Elisa Balsamo will head up a very strong women’s roster aboard a rainbow bike, while on the men's side Giulio Ciccone will aim to give the Tifosi something to cheer.

Wilier's new Filante will certainly be the eye-catcher for 2022. With fully integrated cabling and a host of technical wonders, it represents a substantial update from the brand's stalwart racer the Cento10Pro.

Merida might have been bumped as title sponsor of the vaingloriously-named Bahrain squad a few seasons ago, but it continues to supply the bicycles. Slipped out during the Tour's traditional prologue, the Critérium du Dauphiné, its latest Scultura got off to a good start in 2021 by helping propel Mark Padun to two consecutive wins in the mountains.

Clearly taking a few cues from the firm's other more recently updated bikes, it's likely to be rolled out only for the highest peaks. Leaving Merida's blade-like Reacto to deal with the flat and rolling stages, time-trial duties will be taken care of aboard the firm’s Warp TT.

Jonathan Vaughters and Charly Wegelius’s outfit sticks with Cannondale bikes, no doubt planning to commit further atrocities upon them using neon pink paint and randomly aligned skateboard stickers later in the season. Out of the American brand’s bikes, the SystemSix is the most aero, so will get the most use. The Supersix might come out occasionally on bumpy days, while the vicious-looking SuperSlice will aim to cut down the competition in any time-trials.

With some surprised the gang was able to make the leap up this year, the team will be looking to solidify its status with opportunist results wherever it can. Riding on Look bikes from over the boarder in France, in the past its riders have generally stuck to the firm's calliper brake versions.

2024 Men’s WorldTour team bikes and equipment | Who’s riding what?

All the bikes and components used by the 18 men’s WorldTour teams in 2024 and what’s changed this year

Paul Norman

With the Tour Down Under about to kick off the 2024 WorldTour racing season, the teams are making their final preparations and tweaking their equipment.

For many, that’s a continuation of their 2023 setups – it’s easier for both riders and mechanics to change a few things between seasons rather than make wholesale changes.

But there are some significant swaps from 2023, which we’ve highlighted in our 2024 Men's WorldTour team bike round-up below.

Decathlon AG2R La Mondiale's Van Rysel RCR Pro

2023 was a good year for bike launches, after a comparatively lean period during the Covid pandemic, when travel restrictions made it more difficult for brands to work closely with frame fabricators overseas.

In the last year, for example, we’ve seen the new Tarmac SL8 and Roubaix SL8 from Specialized, which continues to sponsor two teams in 2024: Bora-Hansgrohe and Soudal-QuickStep.

In addition, the latest, lightest Cannondale SuperSix Evo LAB71 broke cover, the Look 795 Blade RS was finally officially launched, there was a new even-lighter Bianchi Specialissima and Decathlon’s Van Rysel brand joined the WorldTour with a slew of new bikes that the rest of us might actually be able to afford.

The bike brand merry-go-round that has been a feature of past years seems to have stopped. Wilier has joined Specialized and Canyon in sponsoring two men’s WorldTour teams though, while BMC and Lapierre have left the tour, the latter after 22 years of sponsoring the Groupama-FDJ team and its predecessors.

No teams using Campagnolo Super Record Wireless

uci pro tour teams 2022

Perhaps the biggest news is not a single team will be using Campagnolo components in this year’s WorldTour, for the first time at the top tier of pro cycling. That’s despite Campag launching its new flagship Super Record Wireless groupset last year.

A couple of years ago, Campagnolo had three sponsored teams, but that dwindled to one (AG2R-Citroën) last year.

It’s not so long ago that every team at the peak of pro racing used a Campagnolo groupset. Shimano was the interloper, calling upon the services of one Lance Armstrong to bring its first Tour de France win in 1999.

Nowadays, Shimano dominates WorldTour groupsets, with 14 of the 18 teams using Dura-Ace .

Campagnolo lovers don’t despair though. Time pedals were another component that disappeared from pro cycling, having once dominated. Under SRAM’s ownership, Time pedals have made a comeback in the last two years, with Lidl-Trek using its featherlight pedals in 2023, being joined this year by Movistar.

In fact, SRAM and its brands seem to be in the ascendancy. It’s already heavily represented in the Women’s WorldTour and in 2024 has four men’s teams using Red AXS, up from two in 2022.

Another SRAM brand, Hammerhead , now supplies its Karoo 2 computers to Bora-Hansgrohe. Surprisingly, considering its profile in the collective cycling psyche, Zipp , another SRAM brand, only supplies wheels to one team: Movistar.

Clothing swap-outs

Gobik Ineos jersey 2024

Although most teams are riding the same bikes as last year, there’s been greater turnover in more minor suppliers.

Probably the prize for the highest profile change goes to Gobik. The Spanish brand has edged out Bioracer as supplier to Ineos Grenadiers, adding to its sponsorship of Movistar. There’s a range of other lesser-known cycle clothing brands plying their trade this year, alongside the likes of Castelli, Sportful and Alé.

There’s also the usual smattering of component suppliers coming and going from the WorldTour. Cema bearings make an appearance on Jayco-AlUla’s Giant bikes, Token bottom brackets are fitted to the Looks of Cofidis and CeramicSpeed ’s go-faster bearings continue to grace a variety of teams’ bikes.

2024 WorldTour bikes | Who’s riding what?

As usual, the WorldTour teams get the cream of the crop of their sponsors’ equipment – no swap-outs for second-tier components here.

Here’s a summary run-down of each team’s bikes, groupset, wheels and other components, with more detail below.

Alpecin-Deceuninck (ADC)

Alpecin-Deceuninck Canyon Aeroad

  • Framesets: Canyon Aeroad CFR / Speedmax CFR Disc (TT)
  • Drivetrain: Shimano Dura-Ace
  • Wheels: Shimano
  • Components : Canyon
  • Pedals : Shimano
  • Power meter : Shimano
  • Tyres : Vittoria
  • Other : Canyon, Selle Italia, Elite, Wahoo

Alpecin-Deceuninck is the first of many teams to have kept to its winning formula in 2024. Its sponsors have every reason to be content with that, with World Champion Mathieu van der Poel flying their colours. The subtle changes to his Canyon Aeroad seen from early last year have yet to show up in retail bikes though.

Arkéa-B&B Hotels (ARK)

Arkea Bianchi Specialissima

  • Framesets : Bianchi Specialissima RC / Oltre RC / Aquila (TT)
  • Drivetrain : Shimano Dura-Ace
  • Wheels : Bianchi / Vision
  • Components : Bianchi integrated handlebars
  • Pedals : Shimano
  • Power meter : Shimano Dura-Ace
  • Tyres : Vittoria
  • Other : Selle Italia saddles, Elite bottle cages, Wahoo computers

Arkéa-B&B Hotels continues on Bianchi bikes this year. Although the Oltre RC aero road bike is still in the team’s quiver, it’s the latest iteration of the Specialissima that’s likely to take centre stage.

The new Specialissima is more aero and efficient than its predecessor says Bianchi. At a claimed 6.6kg weight for a top-spec stock build, pro bikes are likely to skim the UCI 6.8kg limit too, even with bottle cages, race numbers and computers bolted on.

Astana-Qazaqstan Team (AST)

Astana Qazaqstan Wilier Filante SLR

  • Framesets : Wilier Triestina Filante SLR / 0 SLR / Turbine SLR (TT)
  • Wheels : Vision
  • Components : Wilier integrated handlebar
  • Pedals : Look Kéo Blade
  • Tyres : Vittoria Corsa Pro
  • Other : Prologo saddles, Tacx bottle cages, Prologo handlebar tape, Garmin computers

It’s a fifth year on Wilier bikes for Astana-Qazaqstan. Wilier is supplying the same mix of the aero Filante SLR and lightweight/aero 0 SLR for road stages as last year. The paintjob looks to be staying the same too – it’s still arguably the best looking in the pro peloton (with Trek a close competitor), so why change?

The only significant change in 2024 is a swap from HED wheels to Vision. The team started 2023 on Corima wheels, but that brand has been slow out of the blocks with the pros’ new-found favourite tubeless wheels, so the team was one of the few still using tubulars at the start of last season.

We’d guess the swap to HED was prompted by its tubeless support, but it looks as if that relationship hasn’t worked out – or maybe Vision made the team a more attractive offer.

Bahrain Victorious (TBV)

Bahrain Victorious Merida Scultura

  • Framesets : Merida Scultura Disc Team / Reacto Disc Team / Time Warp TT
  • Wheels : Vision Metron
  • Components : Vision Metron handlebars and stems, FSA seatpost (Scultura only)

Pedals : Shimano Dura-Ace

Power meter : Shimano Dura-Ace

  • Tyres : Continental GP5000
  • Other : Prologo saddles and bar tape, Elite bottle cages, Garmin computers

It’s another year with the same Merida bikes and components for Bahrain Victorious, even if the team’s clothing colours have had a make-over.

The FSA/Vision component mix continues too, with Vision providing wheels and its parent brand FSA adding other components. Team leaders get custom 3D-printed Vision bar extensions on their Time Warp time trial bikes – which must surely be due an update soon.

Bora-Hansgrohe (BOH)

Bora-Hansgrohe Specialized Tarmac SL8

  • Framesets : Specialized S-Works Tarmac SL8 / Roubaix SL8 / Shiv TT
  • Drivetrain : SRAM Red AXS
  • Wheels : Roval
  • Components : Roval handlebar and stem
  • Power meter : SRAM/Quarq
  • Tyres : Specialized S-Works Turbo Cotton
  • Other : Specialized saddles and bottle cages, Hammerhead computers

Bora-Hansgrohe continues to ride Specialized bikes with Roval wheels, but upgraded from the Tarmac SL7 to SL8 during 2023. This year, there’s been a groupset takeover by SRAM though, displacing Shimano.

SRAM has also elbowed its way into the team’s cycling computers, with SRAM-owned Hammerhead in place of Wahoo. The team bikes still appear to be fitted with Shimano Dura-Ace pedals though.

There’s a proposed tie-up with Red Bull in the offing, although this apparently needs to be approved by the Austrian competition authorities – look out for a name change for the team later in 2024.

Cofidis (COF)

Cofidis Look 795 Blade RS

  • Framesets : Look 795 Blade RS / 796 Monoblade RS (TT)
  • Drivetrain : Shimano Dura-Ace, Token bottom bracket
  • Wheels : Corima
  • Components : Look bar/stem
  • Pedals : Look Kéo
  • Power meter : SRM
  • Tyres : Michelin Power Cup tubular
  • Other : Selle Italia saddles, Elite bottle cages, Wahoo Elemnt computers

Cofidis starts its second year on the Look 795 Blade RS , a bike that was only officially launched in June 2023, some six months after we first caught sight of it under the team.

Corima is one of the last wheelmakers not offering a tubeless-ready clincher. At the 2023 Tour de France, Cofidis was still running 25mm tubs and that looks to be continuing in 2024.

Another blast from the past is the SRM power meter, although the team does get a flashy and bang up-to-date T47 standard Token ceramic bottom bracket.

Decathlon-AG2R La Mondiale Team (DAT)

Decathlon AG2R La Mondiale's Van Rysel RCR Pro

  • Framesets : Van Rysel RCR Pro, FCR, XCR (TT)
  • Wheels : SwissSide Hadron
  • Components : Deda cockpit
  • Other : Fizik saddles, Elite bottle cages, Wahoo computers

Bravo Decathlon. While other pro teams are riding bikes that, even in retail specs, are prohibitively expensive, it’s stepped into the WorldTour with the reasonably affordable Van Rysel RCR Pro lightweight/aero bike. There’s the FCR, a pro-level Van Rysel aero bike, in the mill too.

The new setup and sponsorship for the team elbows out BMC. It also sees it supplied with wheels from SwissSide, another new WorldTour entrant. However, SwissSide’s aero experts have already helped Canyon and DT Swiss (which isn’t represented in the WorldTour this year) hone their aerodynamics.

EF Education-EasyPost (EFE)

EF Education First-EasyPost Cannondale SuperSix Evo Lab71

  • Framesets : Cannondale SuperSix Evo LAB71 / SystemSix / SuperSlice (TT)
  • Drivetrain : Shimano Dura-Ace, FSA crankset
  • Components : Cannondale System Bar bar/stem
  • Pedals : Wahoo Speedplay
  • Power meter : Power2Max NG Road Cannondale
  • Tyres : Vittoria Corsa
  • Other : Prologo saddles, FSA chainrings, Elite bottle cages, Wahoo computers

EF Education-EasyPost is a case in point of the increasingly spendy bikes ridden by the pros. The latest LAB71 version of the Cannondale SuperSix Evo carries a juicy price tag (although the team was said to be riding rebadged standard Hi-Mod SuperSix Evo bikes last year).

The updates to the SuperSix look small, but in LAB71 guise, the new frame is claimed to weigh 770g, despite its threaded bottom bracket, and to be 12 watts faster. Pro builds are likely to skim the magic 6.8kg figure.

Other bits and bobs largely look to have remained as last year, with FSA/Vision wheels, although the cockpit on the new SuperSix Evo is a one-piece Cannondale System Bar. Probably as a result of a multi-year deal, the team is still using the Power2Max power meters that it’s had fitted to its bikes since 2019, despite its now close relationship with Wahoo, which has its own Powrlink Zero pedal power meter.

Groupama-FDJ (GFC)

Groupama-FDJ Wilier Filante SLR

  • Framesets : Wilier Triestina Filante SLR / Turbine (TT)
  • Wheels : Shimano Dura-Ace
  • Components : Wilier bar/stems
  • Pedals : Look Kéo

One shock move in 2024 is Groupama-FDJ’s swap from Lapierre bikes to Wilier. The team had seemed eternally wedded to Lapierre, in a relationship that started way back in 2002. Lapierre’s decision to end the partnership may be a result of financial problems reported to be suffered by its parent Accell Group.

Wilier has a history of stepping up to supply WorldTour teams in distress when their previous bike sponsor has dropped out suddenly; it took over as bike supplier to Astana in 2020, replacing Argon 18.

Ineos-Grenadiers (IGD)

Ineos Pinarello Dogma

  • Framesets : Pinarello Dogma F / Bolide F (TT)
  • Wheels : Shimano Dura-Ace / Princeton CarbonWorks
  • Components : MOST handlebars and stems
  • Other : Prologo saddles, Elite bottle cages, Garmin computers

It’s business as usual again this year for the Ineos Grenadiers team, with the Pinarello Dogma F road and Bolide F time trial bikes, and a mix of Shimano and Princeton CarbonWorks wheelsets, the latter for time-trial duty.

The team has swapped from Fizik to Prologo saddles though and has replaced its Bioracer team kit with the lesser-known (at least in the UK) Spanish supplier Gobik. Sunglass supplier SunGod rapidly did the decent thing last year and produced a white frame for Geraint Thomas.

Intermarché-Wanty (IWA)

Intermarche-Wanty Cube Litening Aero

  • Framesets : Cube Litening Aero C:68X Pro / Aerium (TT)
  • Drivetrain : Shimano Dura-Ace
  • Wheels : Newmen Advanced SL
  • Components : Cube integrated bar/stem
  • Other : Prologo saddles and bar tape, Elite cages, CeramicSpeed OSPW, Bryton computers

There’s yet another marginal name change this year for Intermarché-Wanty, with Gobert Matériaux dropping out as a named sponsor, although everything else looks to be remaining as in 2023. That includes the Cube Litening road bike and wheels, with shouty logos from Cube-owned Newmen, along with the plus-sized CeramicSpeed derailleur cage.

Lidl-Trek (LTK)

Trek Madone Gen 7

  • Framesets : Trek Madone SLR / Émonda SLR / Domane / Speed Concept (TT)
  • Drivetrain : SRAM Red AXS
  • Wheels : Bontrager Aeolus
  • Components : Bontrager handlebars and stems
  • Pedals : Time Xpro
  • Tyres : Pirelli
  • Other : Bontrager saddles, Wahoo computers

Aside from its name change mid-2023, Lidl-Trek starts 2024 with the same Trek-heavy line-up of sponsors as last year. Trek’s Bontrager brand is responsible for wheels and much of the rest of the componentry.

Meanwhile, SRAM supplies the drivetrain, power meter and, via its Time brand, the team’s pedals. Tyres and cycling computers are the only deviations from the Trek/SRAM theme.

Movistar Team (MOV)

Movistar Canyon Aeroad

  • Framesets : Canyon Aeroad CFR / Speedmax CF SLX (TT)
  • Wheels : Zipp
  • Components : Canyon handlebars and stems
  • Other : Fizik saddles, Canyon bottle cages, Lizard Skins bar tape, Garmin computers

Movistar is entering 2024 with only minor changes of equipment from previous years. It’s another team using SRAM gearing, but in this case complete with wheels from Zipp for an all-SRAM package on its Canyon bikes.

Last year, we suggested the team might be pre-release testing an upgrade to SRAM Red, but, like the changes to the Canyon Aeroad, we're yet to see an official announcement. The main change for this year is a pedal swap to Time from Look.

Soudal-QuickStep (SOQ)

Soudal-QuickStep Tarmac SL8

  • Framesets : Specialized S-Works Tarmac SL8 / Roubaix SL8 / Shiv (TT)
  • Components : Roval bar/stem
  • Tyres : Specialized S-Works Turbo
  • Other : Specialized saddles, CeramicSpeed bearings, Tacx bottle cages, Supercaz bar tape, Garmin computers

Soudal-QuickStep is, like Bora-Hansgrohe, on Specialized bikes again this year. The upgrade of the Tarmac from SL7 to SL8 sees the bikes equipped with the one-piece Roval Rapide Cockpit. This component is said to account for around 4 watts of the SL8’s claimed 16.4 watts of aero gains over the SL7.

Apart from this aero upgrade, the rest of the team’s setup appears to remain the same as last year.

Team DSM-Firmenich PostNL (DFP)

Scott Foil RC

  • Framesets : Scott Foil RC / Plasma RC (TT)
  • Wheels : Shimano Dura-Ace
  • Components : Syncros handlebars and stems
  • Other : Syncros saddles, Elite bottle cages, Wahoo computers

Team DSM has picked up not one, but two new title sponsors since the start of 2023, with PostNL joining Firmenich on the team’s jerseys in 2024.

That seems to be the limit of the changes though, with the team sticking to its Scott Foil RC aero bikes, Syncros components and Shimano Dura-Ace groupsets again in 2024.

Team Jayco-AlUla (JAY)

Jayco AlUla Giant Propel

Framesets : Giant Propel Advanced Disc / TCR Advanced SL Disc / Trinity Advanced Pro (TT)

Drivetrain : Shimano Dura-Ace, Cema bottom bracket

Wheels : Cadex

Components : Cadex bars and stems

Tyres : Cadex

Other : Cadex saddles, Giant bottle cages, Giant computers

The Giant sponsorship of Team Jaco-AlUla continues to the end of 2024 and sees the team riding predominantly the aero (but also lightweight) Propel Advanced, complete with wheels and other bits from Giant’s premium Cadex brand.

Cema has broken through the Giant sponsorship blockade though, supplying bottom bracket bearings, while Elite provides its Fly water bottles.

Team Visma | Lease a Bike (TVL)

Visma-Lease a Bike Cervelo S5

  • Framesets : Cervélo R5 Disc / S5 / Caledonia / P5 (TT)
  • Wheels : Reserve 52/63
  • Components : Cervélo handlebars and stems
  • Pedals : Wahoo Speedplay
  • Other : Fizik saddles, Tacx bottle cages, Garmin computers

The dominant grand tour team of 2023 has lost its long-time sponsorship by the Dutch Jumbo supermarket chain, with Lease a Bike stepping up to co-title sponsor from its subordinate sponsorship in 2023.

Otherwise, things look to be remaining the same at the start of the 2024 season, with the team continuing to ride Cervélo bikes. Cervélo’s owner, Pon Holdings, has more-or-less a monopoly on the team’s equipment, also supplying its Reserve wheels, Nimbl shoes and BBB accessories.

Lease a Bike is also a Pon-owned brand, while team cars will come via Pon’s Dutch Skoda distributor. Pon is also the Netherlands distributor for the MAN buses and trucks the team uses.

UAE Team Emirates (UAD)

UAE Team Emirates Colnago V4Rs

  • Framesets : Colnago V4Rs / K.one (TT)
  • Wheels : ENVE
  • Components : Colnago integrated handlebars and stems
  • Power meter : Shimano
  • Other : Prologo saddles, Elite bottle cages, Wahoo computers

Last, but definitely not least, UAE Team Emirates was again top of the UCI team rankings in 2023, with Tadej Pogačar the leading rider.

Its winning combination extends to its bikes and equipment too, with the team retaining the same combination of Colnago V4Rs road bike, Shimano groupset and ENVE wheels in 2024.

2022 Season Review: Breaking Down the UCI Team Rankings

' src=

Season Breakdown: The 2022 road season is in the bag and so Spencer Martin has taken a close look at the team performances. What does the UCI Team point rankings tell about which outfits over, and under, achieved during the 2022 season?

– This article is an excerpt from the Beyond the Peloton newsletter. Sign up here for full access. –

lombardia22

With the recent running of Il Lombardia marking the end of the 2022 WorldTour racing calendar, I’ve been taking some time to reflect on the trends we saw emerge in the past season and plan out the BTP off-season content. To kick off this reflection and re-examination, I wanted to step back and take stock of how each team stacked up in terms of the UCI point rankings.

vuelta22st6

Below are the top 23 teams (18 1st division + 4 PT) in order of the UCI points they gained from their top 10 point-scoring riders throughout the 2022 season (aka the UCI point rankings).

breakdown

As we can see, Jumbo-Visma takes the top spot in the UCI rankings for the second time in three seasons, with former powerhouse, Quick-Step, falling all the way down to 6th place. And perhaps even more surprising, Jumbo-Visma also ranks as the top team in wins (tied with UAE), while Quick-Step fails to win the season-long ‘win title’ for the first time in over ten years.

vuelta22st16

And below we can see how my pre-season BTP NET projection model stacked up against the post-season UCI Team Point Rankings.

2022 Team BTP NET Projections Compared to Their Final UCI Point WorldTour Ranking Positions: 1) Team Jumbo-Visma (1) 2) UAE Team Emirates (2) 3) INEOS Grenadiers (3) 4) Quick-Step Alpha Vinyl (6) 5) Bahrain – Victorious (8) 6) BORA – hansgrohe (4) 7) Trek – Segafredo (11) 8) EF Education – EasyPost (15) 9) Groupama – FDJ (7) 10) Cofidis, Solutions Crédits (9) 11) Movistar Team (10) 12) AG2R Citroën Team (13) 13) Israel – Premier Tech (16) 14) Team BikeExchange (14) 15) Intermarché Wanty Gobert (5) 16) Astana Qazaqstan (18) 17) Lotto Soudal (12) 18) Team DSM (17)

I will dive into team performance in further detail when I do my weighted BTP NET Rankings for the coming season, but below are a few quick takeaways from these initial results.

tdf22st17

Initial Takeaways:

1) Jumbo-Visma is officially cycling’s new superteam

  • After a multi-year turnaround project, the Dutch team is now home to some of the sport’s best riders (Wout van Aert, Primoz Roglic and Jonas Vingegaard) and will exit the 2022 season with a Tour de France overall title along with the most UCI points and wins.
  • This is one of the most difficult achievements in the sport since the single-minded focus on winning an overall title at the grand tour usually means a team can’t compile enough wins and UCI points to lead the WorldTour.
  • They will now head into the 2023 season as the undisputed best team in the sport and will have massive expectations on their shoulders at nearly every race where they take the start line.

fleche22m

2) Quick-Step fails to take the ‘win title’ for the first time since 2012

  • Up until 2022, the Belgian team eschewed stage race results in order to rack up wins in one-day races and individual stages.
  • While 2022 was disappointing in the respect that the team failed to take the win title for the first time since 2012 and produced their worst results in the cobbled classics since the founding of the team in 2003, it was a massive success in they won their first-ever grand tour (Vuelta a España) and unearthed the sport’s next big grand tour star in Remco Evenepoel.
  • Assuming the team can hang onto Evenepoel beyond 2022 (he is being pursued by bigger-budgeted teams like Ineos), it will be interesting to see how the team sets its financial and sporting priorities going forward.
  • Interestingly, while their 4th place finish in the UCI Points rankings is technically disappointing, it is the first time their pre-season BTP NET rankings have roughly aligned with their actual finish, which reflects that their past results have been more a result of the team’s structure producing an overachieving squad than pure talent.

vuelta22st21

3) UAE failed to defend its Tour de France, and struggled to look like a cohesive team at times, but produced their best season ever

  • Tadej Pogačar’s UAE team failed to win the Tour de France for the first time since 2020, but their 2021 off-season spending spree appeared to pay off as they tied for first in the win title and were the only team within 2,000 points of Jumbo-Visma in the UCI points race.
  • This shows us that while they appeared to struggle to select the right Tour de France lineup to support Pogačar and to race as a cohesive unit in the races where their superstar wasn’t present, they will head into the off-season viewing 2022 as a successful campaign and that they could potentially emerge as the sport’s most dominant team in future years if they can find the right racing formula to unlock the immense amount of individual talent on the team.

vuelta22st6

4) The French teams had a surprisingly strong year

  • After years of struggling to maintain pace with their competition in the world of hyper-advanced training, French teams produced a strong 2022, landing five teams in the top 20 and staving off relegation, which allowed them to keep four teams in the 18-team WorldTour.

bystrom

5) Intermarché-Wanty-Gobert punched well above its weight

  • If Alpecin was the underfunded overachiever of the 2021 season, Intermarché, who finished second-to-last in the 2021 WorldTour rankings, is the darling of 2022.
  • With an extremely thoughtful team-building and in-race strategy, the underdog Belgian team was able to turn an 18th-place finish in 2021 into a shockingly high 5th-place finish in 2022.
  • Most impressive is the gap between their BTP NET projection of 15th and 5th place finish, which shows that they really maximized the talent in their team.

alpecin

6) DSM, EF, and Astana are in desperate need of a turnaround in 2023

  • While Intermarché was flying high, three better-funded WorldTour rivals (DSM, EF, and Astana) suffered through absolutely awful seasons where points, wins, podiums and top tens were extremely hard to come by.
  • While Astana and DSM struggled mainly due to weak rosters, EF’s extremely large delta between their BTP NET projected finish (8th), and their actual finish (18th), shows that their problems were more execution than talent related. I expect the American team’s off-season will include a significant amount of performance fact-finding to figure out how this could have happened.
  • Putting just how poor the seasons of this trio were into perspective, while DSM only trailed AG2R by a single win, they finished over 2,000 UCI points behind the French team, which had a fairly disappointing season itself.

vuelta22st15

Next week I will be breaking down the top 20 in the UCI point rider rankings before getting into the usual BTP off-season content of digging deeper into team results and trends from the 2022 seasons in more depth, restarting the Weekly Transfer Analysis, and attempting to project 2023 performances with my BTP NET series after the rosters are set in January. An important note is that if you want access to all of these posts, you have to be a paying BTP subscriber .

UCI announces teams for the 2022 WorldTour with six new women's teams joining the top tier

The women's top division of the sport is growing every year with yet more teams joining

Team Jumbo-Visma women

The UCI has unveiled the names of the teams which will make up the 2022 WorldTour, with six new women's teams stepping up to the top tier of racing.

Five of the women's teams are moving up to the World Tour from second division ranks, with the UAE team taking on the licence from Alé-BTC-Ljubljana, who were already a WorldTour squad.

This means that there will be 14 teams in the women's WorldTour for 2022. The other new teams are Team Jumbo-Visma, EF Education-Tibco-SVB, Uno-X Pro Cycling, Human Powered Health (formally Rally) and Roland-Cogeas-Edelweiss Squad.

>>> Tom Pidcock aims for triple world championship title: 'I want to be world champion in all three, all in the same year'

In the men's WorldTour there are 18 teams confirmed to be in the top division of the sport with just the one team from the 2021 season not gaining a place.

Qhubeka-NextHash was refused its 2022 WorldTour licence by the UCI amid financial and sponsorship issues for the South African registered team.

This means that there will be one less team in the top tier for 2022 but three Pro Continental teams will be invited to some of the biggest races with Alpecin-Fenix and Team Arkéa-Samsic both being invited to all UCI WorldTour events, meaning the likes of Nairo Quintana (Arkéa-Samsic) can ride the Giro d'Italia once again.

Team of Peter Sagan, TotalEnergies, have been granted invitations to all one-day WorldTour races but will have to apply for a wildcard to the big stage races.

There have been 17 teams confirmed for the second division of the men's side of the sport with a few new sponsor names to get used to with Rally Cycling becoming Human Powered Health and Androni Giocattoli-Sidermec becoming Drone Hopper-Androni Giocattoli.

Hi, I'm one of Cycling Weekly's content writers for the web team responsible for writing stories on racing, tech, updating evergreen pages as well as the weekly email newsletter. Proud Yorkshireman from the UK's answer to Flanders, Calderdale, go check out the cobbled climbs!

I started watching cycling back in 2010, before all the hype around London 2012 and Bradley Wiggins at the Tour de France. In fact, it was Alberto Contador and Andy Schleck's battle in the fog up the Tourmalet on stage 17 of the Tour de France.

It took me a few more years to get into the journalism side of things, but I had a good idea I wanted to get into cycling journalism by the end of year nine at school and started doing voluntary work soon after. This got me a chance to go to the London Six Days, Tour de Yorkshire and the Tour of Britain to name a few before eventually joining Eurosport's online team while I was at uni, where I studied journalism. Eurosport gave me the opportunity to work at the world championships in Harrogate back in the awful weather.

After various bar jobs, I managed to get my way into Cycling Weekly in late February of 2020 where I mostly write about racing and everything around that as it's what I specialise in but don't be surprised to see my name on other news stories.

When not writing stories for the site, I don't really switch off my cycling side as I watch every race that is televised as well as being a rider myself and a regular user of the game Pro Cycling Manager. Maybe too regular.

My bike is a well used Specialized Tarmac SL4 when out on my local roads back in West Yorkshire as well as in northern Hampshire with the hills and mountains being my preferred terrain.

The Outer Line: UCI expands WorldTour teams sizes for 2021 and 2022

Teams will be permitted to expand to 32 for next year, dropping to 31 for 2022, and then back to 30 in 2023..

In a little-noticed development, the Pro Cycling Council – the UCI body that oversees road racing – has approved a temporary expansion of the allowable WorldTour team sizes for 2021 and 2022.

In 2020, teams were allowed 30 riders, assuming that at least two of those athletes were neo-pros. The comparable team size figure has been expanded to 32 for next year, dropping to 31 for 2022 and then back to 30 in 2023.  UCI spokesman Louis Chenaille told The Outer Line that this exceptional authorization was approved within the context of the on-going COVID crisis, in order to support the employment of a greater number of riders during these challenging times. The change was apparently announced earlier to the teams as part of the registration specifications for 2021.

While the official WorldTour team size has been limited to 28 riders in the past, teams possessed the ability to sign two additional riders assuming they were neo-pros, thus allowing them to have an effective team size of 30 riders.

A few teams have already taken advantage of this expansion. About a week ago, Team Israel Start-Up Nation was the first to announce its expanded roster . According to current figures on ProCyclingStats , ISN remains the largest team in the WT with the full complement of 32 riders, though teams Astana-Premier Tech and Team DSM (formerly Sunweb) both list 31 riders.

And of course, there are some 35 pro riders who have yet to sign a contract for next year who could still be added to some of these teams. According to ProCyclingStats , this includes several top riders, such as Jonathan Caicedo, Jan Polanc, and Sebastian Juan Molano.

And as we hypothesized in our AIRmail newsletter earlier this week, this expanded team size may be what has allowed the addition of certain riders to teams that might not have otherwise happened – for example, the late addition of Mark Cavendish to Team Deceuninck-QuickStep. There may be a few more announcements in the coming days.

French WorldTour pro cyclist dismissed by team for 'anti-doping violation'

F rench professional cyclist Franck Bonnamour has been dismissed by his team, Decathlon-AG2R La Mondiale, after he was provisionally suspended last month due to “unexplained abnormalities” in his anti-doping record.

Last month, Bonnamour was suspended by the UCI from competition due to "unexplained abnormalities" in his biological passport. His contract has now been terminated, but he denies wrongdoing.

"On February 5, 2024, the team was informed by the UCI of the investigation and provisional suspension of Franck Bonnamour due to a violation of anti-doping rules," a spokesperson for the team said on Tuesday evening. "This suspension follows checks carried out before his arrival in the team on January 1, 2023.

"The team was forced to terminate Franck Bonnamour's employment contract early. Decathlon AG2R La Mondiale Team advocates the practice of cycling in line with strong ethical rules."

In a  short statement  shared at the beginning of February, the UCI, cycling's governing body, wrote: "The Union Cycliste Internationale (UCI) informs that French rider Franck Bonnamour has been provisionally suspended in accordance with the UCI Anti-Doping Rules due to unexplained abnormalities in his Biological Passport."

All WorldTour and ProTour riders have a  biological passport , an electronic record of all of their doping tests. The measure was introduced in 2008 and is run by an independent entity, the International Testing Agency (ITA), who complete blood and urine tests in and out of competition.

Decathlon-AG2R have insisted that the anti-doping case dates to before he joined the team in January 2023. The Frenchman previously rode for B&B Hotels-KTM in 2021 and 2022.

A popular breakaway figure at the  Tour de France , earning him the Super Combatif title in 2021, Bonnamour has won one race in his decade-long career, the minor French event La Polynormande, while riding for B&B in 2022. He was previously part of Arkéa Samsic's squad, having turned pro with the team as a trainee in 2015.

In a statement on social media on Tuesday evening, Bonnamour insisted that he had never used "blood manipulation" or doping products.

"I have always done my job respecting the rules that the UCI imposes on me," he wrote.

"I have always complied, of course, with the numerous anti-doping controls that this sport has required of me for years. I have never used prohibited products or any blood manipulation.

"With the help of my lawyers and scientists, we’re working on my defence. I have always been an honest, upright and clean rider and therefore cannot be accused of cheating."

Each year the professional peloton changes its look with a slew of new colours and sponsor logos adorning each team and 2022 ushers in some bold new looks for the men and women's teams.

The trend toward neon pink, orange and purple caused a clash between four women's teams, with the Andy Schleck-CP NVST-Immo Losch squad forced to redesign and remake a whole season's worth of clothing after the UCI determined the colour scheme - which was close to what the Luxembourg outfit wore in 2021 - was too similar to the new kits from SD Worx , Human Powered Health and UAE Team ADQ .

All four teams had various shades of the same warm hues, with SD Worx leaning more towards fuchsia, UAE Team ADQ a lighter tone of the colourway, and Human Powered Health favouring their traditional orange.

The UCI also rejected a jersey design for the Bizkaia-Durango UCI Women's team because it was too close to the Women's WorldTour leader's jersey.

There were no reported conflicts on the men's side, with most of the WorldTour teams opting for a more toned-down approach.

Both Bora-Hansgrohe and Euskaltel-Euskadi incorporated angular graphics with contrasting colours - red on teal for the German team; blue and green on orange for the Basque squad.

Others went for solid torsos and contrasting sleeves, with Ineos Grenadiers sporting a navy blue chest with red arms, QuickStep-AlphaVinyl going for white arms and a medium blue torso, BikeExchange-Jayco mimicking the Belgian team's 2020 kit with blue-banded white sleeves and a lighter blue fade on the chest, UAE Team Emirates sticking with their white and red torso and black arms and Groupama-FDJ sticking to their white chest with one red and one blue arm.

Eolo-Kometa, B&B Hotels-KTM and Astana Qazaqstan chose varying shades of turquoise.

The Jumbo-Visma team will stand out in both pelotons with a black and gold kit similar to 2021's, while Movistar will blend in with darker blue jerseys and a muted logo.

Lotto Soudal, Team DSM, Arkéa-Samsic and Team Arkéa women's teams each stayed true to their previous designs. Drone Hopper Androni Giocattoli has a sharp new dark red and black look but held to their tradition of crowding the kit with numerous logos.
