Balearia Caribbean has offices in Fort Lauderdale (Fll, United States) and in the Bahamas on the island of Bimini and in Freeport, in Grand Bahama island. From these offices and ports the Balearia boat departs, they are the boarding point and you can buy ferry tickets directly too.

The Fort Lauderdale offices, in Port Everglades, are where passengers embark to Bimini and Grand Bahama (Bahamas). As a general rule, boarding takes place at Terminal 21, although it is always good to make sure that there has not been a last minute change in the departure terminal. Balearia is working on being granted its own terminal in the port of Port Everglades..

In Bimini, the Balearia office is located in a yellow house in Fisher Village, less than a 5-minute walk from the Hilton Hotel. The boarding pier is also a 5-minute walk away. From the office there is a free transfer that leaves you at the ferry door before boarding.

Balearia Caribbean Changes, Cancellations & Refunds

Balearia Caribbean's ferry ticket are not transferable. The name of the passenger cannot be modified in any case.

Those reservations whose cancellation is requested seven days before the ferry departure date, are entitled to a full refund.

If the reservation cancellation request is made between 7 and 4 days before the ferry departure date, the cancellation penalty will be 50%.

Those reservation cancellations requested three days or less before the ferry departure date will not be refunded.

Date changes : Date changes are allowed if they are requested at least 24 hours before the ferry departure date. A fare difference and a US$75 penalty will be applied for each change.

Special Offers and One day Trips: No refund will be applied for cancellations of special offers and one-day trips.

Any passenger who does not board the ferry for any reason, beyond the control of Balearia Caribbean, will not be entitled to a refund or date change under any circumstances.

Balearia Caribbean does not assume any responsibility other than the refund of the ticket, in case it has to refund it, if the ferry trip for which the ticket has been issued does not make the stipulated trip due to operational difficulties, weather conditions, unforeseen circumstances or forces beyond Balearia Caribbean's control.

New requirements effective on June 19th, 2022 .

June 17th, 2022: ALL passengers will NO LONGER need a Bahamas Health Visa starting on June 19th, 2022

Every passenger that is fully vaccinated WILL NO LONGER NEED A TEST .

All unvaccinated travelers ages 2 and older will be required to obtain either a negative RT-PCR test or a Rapid Antigen test— taken no more than three days (72 hours) prior to travel and present the negative test results at check-in before travel to The Bahamas.

Passengers will be required to bring Covid test result, proof of vaccinations (original card) on travel day. This is a mandatory request by The Bahamas government. The embarkation may be denied due to failure of facilitating the proper travel documents.

Children under the age of 2 are exempt from testing requirements.

* Currently, no Covid test or vaccination is required to enter Florida when traveling by ferry.

May 31, 2022: LATEST UPDATE from the Bahamian authorities regarding passengers traveling to the Bahamas from Fort Lauderdale (both Bimini and Grand Bahama) on the day trip. Although those passengers who come to the Bahamas for one day trip do not need to present the Health Visa upon arrival at the port of the Bahamas, it is mandatory that they present a negative result of a rapid antigen test upon arrival.

All other passengers who spend at least one night in the Bahamas must present the Health Visa upon arrival in the country.

Children from 3 to 12 years old travel by ferry with a 50% discount on the price of the adult fare, taxes not included.

Children 13 years and older pay the regular Adult rate (paying the same taxes as adults).

Infants (from 0 to 6 months) may travel on board Balearia Caribbean ferry to Bahamas.

PLEASE NOTE: In the event of heavy seas, strong winds or inclement weather, Balearia Caribbean may deny boarding of the baby at the discretion of the Company for reasons of safety of the baby.

MINORS (under 18 years of age) traveling with an accompanying adult, who is not the parent or legal guardian of the minor, a notarized parent/guardian letter of consent is required at the time of travel (signed by both parents) with a copy of a photo ID.

MINORS traveling with ONLY ONE of their parents ALSO require a notarized consent letter from the other parent not traveling, if this parent does not have the Consent Letter available, they must sign a Release Form, which is available at check in.

The government of the Bahamas has modified the requirements for entry into the Bahamas islands and travel between certain islands in the Bahamas in order to provide a safe and healthy island experience for all travelers visiting the Bahamas to safely enjoy the islands.

This new regulation is aimed at all people who apply for a Health Visa to travel to the Bahamas or travel between islands within the Bahamas as of next Friday, August 6, 2021.

From this date to:

Entering the Bahamas from other countries:

All fully vaccinated travelers, as well as children ages 2 to 11, will need to obtain a negative COVID-19 test (either a rapid antigen test or a PCR test) taken no more than five (5) days prior to departure/arrival date to the Bahamas.

Unvaccinated travelers 12 years of age and older must obtain a negative COVID-19 PCR test taken no more than 5 days prior to arrival.

All children under the age of 2 are exempt from any testing requirements.

Nassau and Paradise Island, Grand Bahama (Freeport), Bimini (Alice Town), Exuma, Abaco, and North and South Eleuthera, including Harbor Island.

Balearia Caribbean will relaunch its ferry service from Florida to the Bahamas on Febraury 2021, departing from Fort Lauderdale port. The South Florida-based company runs ferry services from Fort Lauderdale to Bimini first and from Port Everglades to Freeport (Grand Bahama island).

The company announced last week that the Government of the Bahamas has approved the launch of the fast ferry service between Miami (Fort Lauderdale) and Grand Bahama (Freeport) in the Bahamas. His first departure to Freeport is scheduled for February 11, 2021.

Balearia will be offering initially one sailing service a week, with ferry on Thurdays. At the end of Febraury, another ferry service will be implemented on Sundays. If there is an increase in demand for passenger transport, the shipping company is prepared to increase the number of weekly departures in March and April.

The government of the Bahamas has announced that it will open its borders to the transport of passengers by ferrys of February 10, 2021 to Bimini island and on February 11, 2021 to Freeport Harbour (Gran Bahama island).

The ferry route to Freeport, Grand Bahama, will be opertate once a week (Thurdays) and, if possible, it will be two days a week in February. If passenger demand increases, and sanitary conditions allow it, the frequency on the ferry routes will be increased in March and April 2021.

As a GENERAL RULE, all travelers who want to visit the Bahamas should apply for a Bahamas Health Travel Visa. This visa can be obtained through the website travel.gov.bs . This gorgeous archipelago is filled with pristine islands, rich culture and unforgettable experiences. Perhaps the best part is proximity; you can take a day trip there from Florida or enjoy a longer getaway.

• Have all the right paperwork on hand – Because The Bahamas is located amidst foreign waters, you will need the following:
• Clearance Form: If you’re planning to visit The Bahamas and are not a resident, you will need to pass through Customs and Immigration at the designated port of entry. Your crew needs only one  Bahamas Customs  Clearance Form . While your boat is being inspected, instruct passengers to remain on board.
• Bahamas Immigration Card: Each passenger must fill out a  Bahamas Immigration Inward Passenger Form  and have it ready to show customs at the port of arrival. Be sure to discard this when you re-enter the United States.
• Proof of citizenship: Whether you have a passport card, book or both, have them on hand and make sure they are not within six months of the expiration date. You could have issues getting to the Bahamas or back to the States if so. It’s always a a great idea to keep a photo of your birth certificate on board just in case.
• Fishing license: All visitors entering The Bahamas with the intent to fish from a vessel that is not Bahamian-owned need to carry a  Sportfishing Permit . It is illegal to fish without one.
• Make sure you have the correct anchor(s) – If your vessel breaks down or you experience any difficulties while on the water, having the right anchor (s) to launch is pivotal while you repair the damage or wait for help to arrive. Always make sure to anchor in the best possible place. This will depend on the size of the boat, wind speed and current location.

Florida doesn’t require boat owners to carry insurance , which leaves a lot of room for uninsured boater claims in the event of accident or emergency. If someone is injured onboard or otherwise, you can be found liable.

And for a quick trip to Bimini or Grand Bahama from Florida’s Fort Lauderdale (just north of Miami), your best bet is to travel on the Balearia Caribbean ferry.

The Balearia Caribbean takes a 2.5-hour scenic route that you’ll never forget, gliding over clear blue Caribbean water. Interested travelers can book on the company’s website by entering their desired ports and dates. Prices vary depending on your dates and whether you want economy or premium seats, but are typically above $115 each way. Splurging for premium means more comfortable seats that recline, main deck seats, and a soft drink and snack during your trip, and on certain ferries, priority boarding. Now, only unvaccinated travelers will need to show proof of a negative COVID-19 PCR test or a Rapid Antigen test, taken no more than 72 hours before traveling.

I paid $200 for a 2-hour ferry ride from Florida to the Bahamas. I spent 9 hours there, and it wasn't enough time.

There are a lot of different ways you can spend $200 in a day in Miami .

A brunch with friends on South Beach could easily amount to this price if you aren't careful, and many excursions around the city could cost this much once you factor in parking and gratuity.

But this spring, I switched up my routine and used $200 to take a solo day trip from Fort Lauderdale, Florida, to Bimini, a small island chain in the Bahamas roughly 50 miles east of Miami.

It cost me about $200 for the round-trip ferry ride.

I purchased a two-hour ferry ride with Baleària Carribean for a Wednesday. My round-trip ferry ride from Fort Lauderdale to Bimini cost a little more than $200 thanks to a spring-break promotion. Prices are usually around $225.

Prices can vary by time of year and airline, but a 45-minute flight from South Florida to Bimini usually costs $50 to $60 more than the ferry.

Flying would've been quicker, but I'd never taken a ferry from Miami to the Bahamas before despite living in Florida for nearly six years and I wanted the experience.

First, I drove to Port Everglades to board.

I left from Miami, and it took me nearly 40 minutes to drive to Port Everglades in Fort Lauderdale from Dade City. The ship was set to depart at 9:00 a.m., and information I received from Baleària said we should arrive about two hours early. 

Around 7:00 a.m., I pulled into the Palm Parking Garage, which is right next to the terminal Baleària regularly uses. It cost me $15 to park for the day, which suited me because I was coming back that evening. 

I'd already printed my boarding pass and only had a small backpack, so check-in was easy.

Within 20 minutes, I'd shown my passport, passed through security and the ticket gate, and was ready to board. I was given a wristband, which I'd need to prove I was a day-trip passenger who was getting off at the ship's first stop before the vessel would head on to Freeport.

After an hour, the gates opened and people were able to board.

Once boarding started, I realized I was surrounded by people who'd done this before.

We didn't have assigned seats on the ferry, so the seats were first come, first served.

I'll take my peace of mind over a choice seat on a ship or plane any day, so I was one of the last people to board. Fortunately, the ferry was nowhere near capacity on this Wednesday trip, so I was still able to snag a window seat in a row all by myself.

Once I got myself situated, the concession-stand line was already long. While I was waiting, people around me were making comments about the voyage and how it compared to other ones, which made me think I was with people who regularly made this trip.

The ship left on time, and I didn't get my coffee and snack until 40 minutes later. I can only imagine how much longer everything would take if the ship were full.

The ride was rockier than I expected.

When I was 18, I sailed across the Irish Sea to Dublin from Wales and thought it was fine. Now, a decade later, I can definitely say I'm not immune to seasickness .

I'm not sure if the sea was rougher than normal, but I definitely felt the roll of each wave as we sailed to our stop in Bimini. It wasn't unmanageable — just uncomfortable. Stepping out onto the deck to watch the waves helped a little.

The ride took almost exactly two hours, and we docked in Bimini's harbor at 11:00 a.m.

Day-trip passengers were prioritized when we disembarked in Bimini.

When we made it to our stop in North Bimini, the ship crew made an announcement for Bimini day-trip passengers to begin disembarking first. I had to show the wristband I'd gotten back in Fort Lauderdale to get off.

Within five minutes, I was standing on the dock. A few minutes later, a tram came and picked us up to drive us to the island. Since we were the first ones off the boat, we didn't have to wait to get on.

I was only going to be in the Bahamas for the day , so I appreciated how Baleària was committed to maximizing my time on the island.

The area of the island I was in felt like it was really geared toward tourists.

When I first got off the boat, my group was immediately shuttled near the entrance to the Hilton at Resorts World Bimini. When we got off the shuttle, we were greeted by half a dozen people trying to convince us to spend $60 to rent golf carts. This is one of the most common ways tourists explore the island for the day.

Even though I was here to relax, I'm not comfortable visiting a country and only spending my time at a resort . So, before I headed to the Hilton, I decided to explore the island on foot.

The farther south I went, the fewer tourists I found.

It's only about 2 miles from the cruise port to Radio Beach, and I was one of the few people I saw walking that day.

The weather was warm and pleasant, and I saw lots of stores and shops I would have missed if I were zooming by on a golf cart. Locals and visitors on golf carts stopped me more than a dozen times asking if I wanted a ride, so I guess it's unusual to walk the length of the island.

I eventually made it to Radio Beach, which was quite empty.

Even though I was by myself, I felt incredibly safe and enjoyed my time alone.

When I finally made it to Radio Beach, I was the only one there, and the ocean views made the trek absolutely worth it . After sitting and enjoying my solitude for a while, I walked back to the Hilton.

I stopped at a hotel on the island and bought a pool pass.

When I was planning my trip in the days before arriving at North Bimini, most everything I read online said you could get a Bimini Beach Club day pass for $39.

However, I learned on the island that I could get a day pass to the Hilton's outdoor pool for about $15. Since I only had a few hours left on the island after lunch, I chose this option.

The pool area was clean, stylish, and nearly empty when I visited — just like the beach was.

Leaving the island didn't go as planned, but the process was still well-coordinated.

When it was finally time to leave, we had a minor hiccup: The ferry was coming back from Freeport and was delayed. Baleària communicated this with Hilton, and the hotel allowed me and other passengers to wait in the lobby until our shuttle arrived.

Instead of boarding from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m., we arrived at the ferry a little past 7 p.m. The boarding felt a little rushed, but we still left on time to head back to Florida .

Getting off the boat back in Florida was the most stressful part of my trip.

After a long day of walking and traveling, I was ready to get back to Miami as quickly as possible. However, when the ferry docked just after 10:00 p.m., we were told we had to wait an additional half an hour until all luggage was off the ship before disembarking.

The ferry had two seating levels, and I was on the top one, so we had to wait for the passengers below to disembark before we could.

Once we were off the ferry, passengers with checked luggage collected their bags, and we passed through customs and immigration before I headed back to my car.

I'll definitely go back to the Bahamas, but probably not as a day trip.

Based on my short time on the island, I think North Bimini is a beautiful destination for resort-goers or solo travelers looking for some peace and quiet. I definitely want to go back to the Bahamas and visit another island, but I don't think I'll be doing a day trip again any time soon.

Baleària and Hilton made the experience as smooth and joyful as possible, but it's a long day. I'm glad I got to experience a piece of Bimini, but next time, I'd want to spend a little more time on the islands.

If you’re looking to make a trip from the US to the Bahamas by boat, it should come as no surprise the best state to do that from is Florida, given its proximity to the Caribbean. From there, the best jumping-off points are:

Powerboats can cover the distance to the closest island of Bimini in two hours but the slower the boat, like sailboats , the more planning it takes to cross the Gulf Stream which can be either benign or seriously lumpy and unpleasant.

Make sure you have a weather window before setting out because when the wind from the north meets the current flowing from the south, conditions can be rough. Also, most of the Bahamian waters are quite shallow and full of coral heads so shallow draft boats are your best bet.

The best time of year to visit the Bahamas is mid-December to mid-April. Remember that during hurricane season (June to November), there are no places in the Bahamas to hide from big winds. We strongly recommend planning your boating trip for the December to April window.

Island highlights

Many people cross to Bimini, rest, and then decide whether to go north to the Sea of Abaco or south to the Berry Islands and Exumas. The Abacos are a compact cruising destination protected from the wrath of the Atlantic Ocean by their outer island structure. They form a sort of saltwater lake where some cruisers hang out nearly the entire winter.

Little Harbor in the south is protected on nearly all sides and is a great place to explore caves or watch jumping rays and surfacing turtles. Farther north is Hope Town with its striped lighthouse and then Man-O-War Cay with a shallow harbor bordered by mangroves. Green Turtle Cay is home to the iconic Dollar Bar and is about as far north as most boaters venture when staying in the Abacos.

A larger territory is to the south in the Exuma Cays, a 37-mile crescent of nearly 400 isles. The Exuma Cays Land and Sea Park is a great place to snorkel, as are the many sunken airplanes left over from what used to be a busy drug trade in the 1980s.

About 80 miles southeast of the jumping-off point of Nassau is Big Major Cay, with pigs that swim up to your dinghy begging for treats. Thunderball Grotto nearby is a cave you can swim into but be sure to visit in the morning or the late afternoon to skip the crowds.

Boat trip tips

Have an accurate and current weather forecast before setting out. Mild southerly winds minimize the Gulf Stream waves, while a strong, cold northerly front will make the crossing miserable. Always make sure to check for a weather condition known as “The Rage.” This phenomenon is when large swells from the Atlantic Ocean enter the Abacos waters, making everything uncomfortable.

Have the latest charting software in your plotter, but remember that markers and buoys often shift and may not be on station, and keel -grabbing sandbars move continuously. Keep an eye on your depth sounder at all times – these waters are skinny.

When entering a cove or harbor, do so with the sun high in the sky to provide color contrasts that indicate shallows. Have a good pair of eyes scoping the water ahead for coral heads that aren’t charted.

Carry an anchor in your dinghy when snorkeling, and stock up on sunscreen and rash guards because the sun here is unrelenting.

Connectivity is sketchy in the out islands, and WiFi is hard to come by, so either carry a satellite communicator or just be ready to unplug. Most islands are pretty mellow without a lot of nightlife except during festivals and events like junkanoos and regattas.

The bone fishing and snorkeling in the Bahamas are amazing, so bring your gear and your camera because these islands offer some of the most spectacular blue waters anywhere in the world.

This is not the case for the Bahamas, they are not connected to any other landmass. Unless your car drives underwater, you’ll have to find another way to get to the Bahamas.

How to get to the Bahamas from Florida

To get to the Bahamas, you have a few options. You can take a plane, a boat, or a cruise.

The easiest way to get to the Bahamas is by taking a direct flight from Florida. Several major airlines offer flights to the Bahamas from cities across Florida.

You can also take a boat or ferry to the Bahamas from Florida. The trip will take longer than flying, but it can be a fun experience.

Finally, you can take a cruise to the Bahamas from Florida. This is a popular option because it combines travel and vacation into one.

1. Take a plane to the Bahamas from Florida

There are several airlines and flights each day from various cities in Florida to the Bahamas.

Depending on which city you fly out of, your flight can be anywhere from 45 minutes to 3 hours.

Flying from Miami or Fort Lauderdale will be significantly shorter than flights from Tampa or Jacksonville.

There are over 40 airports in the Bahamas, but most of them are domestic airports for interisland flights. There are 5 international airports in the Bahamas. You will need to fly into one of these airports if you are coming to the Bahamas from the US.

How long is the ferry ride from Florida to the Bahamas?

It will take about 3 hours to get from Florida to Bimini, and closer to 4 hours to Grand Bahama Island.

Is there a car ferry to the Bahamas?

No, there is not a ferry that you can drive your car onto in Florida and then drive off in the Bahamas .

There are options, however, to get your car to the Bahamas and we will talk about those further down in the post.

3. Taking a boat from Florida to the Bahamas

If you have your own boat, it is possible to drive it to the Bahamas. Only attempt this journey if you are a confident and competent boat driver.

Make sure your boat is in excellent working condition. Check the weather and be sure you will have smooth seas and clear skies.

You need to be sure you are very clear on the rules of entering the Bahamas. All of the information you need can be found on the Bahamas Tourism Website. Click here for boating policies .

You will need to enter at an approved port of entry. There are many ports of entry into the Bahamas via water, and you can find them here . You will also need to pay a fee for a cruising permit, that information is also available on from the links above.

You will also need to follow proper entry procedures. All visiting boaters must clear Customs and Immigration at the nearest designated Port of Entry.

Upon entering each port, fly the yellow quarantine flag and notify Customs of your impending arrival. Customs and Immigration officials will come to your vessel.

The captain is allowed to disembark before your boat has been cleared, but other passengers must remain on board.

Everyone on board must have proof of citizenship. You will need to fill out an Immigration Arrival/Departure Card, which you will keep until your departure.

After months of planning and excitement, it's finally over. The solar eclipse has come and gone throughout most of the United States.

While Florida was not in the path of totality for the 2024 total solar eclipse, residents throughout the state were able to witness a partial eclipse. And now we're eager to see it again .

We're in luck — almost all of Florida will be in the path of totality for a  total solar eclipse coming  later this century. What's the catch? It won't be for another 20 years.

When is the next total eclipse in U.S. after 2024?

Mark your calendars for March 30, 2033! Though you might want set aside time to travel.

According to NASA, the next total solar eclipse will occur in Russia and the U.S., with  Alaska the only state in the path of totality. The maximum duration of totality for this eclipse will be 2 minutes and 37 seconds.

If that does not end up fitting into your schedule (or you want something a bit closer), you're in luck! Eleven years later, there will be one on Aug. 23, 2044 . However, the only states in the path of totality will be Montana, North Dakota, and South Dakota.

When will Florida be in path of totality for a total solar eclipse?

Florida will finally get its day in the sun. Metaphorically, not literally.

On Aug. 12, 2045, a total solar eclipse will be visible over almost all of Florida, according to  NationalEclipse.com.

The parent company to Norwegian Cruise Line announced Monday a major order for eight new ships among its three brands as well as the construction of a pier to allow its cruise ships to dock instead of tender to its private Bahamas island for the first time.

Norwegian Cruise Line Holdings said it was planning to bring on four new ships for NCL, two new ships for upper premium brand Oceania Cruises and two ships for luxury brand Regent Seven Seas, all to be built at Fincantieri shipyard in Italy and debut during a 10-year run from 2026-2036.

The NCL ships would be the largest ever built for the line at around 200,000 gross tons and capacity of about 5,000 guests. They won’t arrive until after the final delivery of its Prima-Plus class ships expected between 2025-2028, the larger sister ships to the Norwegian Prima and Viva that debuted in the last couple of years. The four ships from the unnamed class of vessel would arrive in 2030, 2032, 2034 and 2036.

The new class for Oceania Cruises, which in 2023 debuted its first new ship in more than a decade — the Oceania Allura — will also be the largest ever built for the line at 86,000 gross tons and a capacity of 1,450 guests. They’re expected in 2027 and 2029.

And the Regent Seven Seas fleet’s new vessels will also be larger coming in at 77,000 gross tons with a capacity of 850 guests. They’re expected in 2026 and 2029. Regent just debuted the third of its Explorer class ships in December 2023.

“This strategic new-ship order across all three of our award-winning brands provides for the steady introduction of cutting-edge vessels into our fleet and solidifies our long-term growth,” said NCLH president and CEO Harry Sommer in a press release. “It also allows us to significantly leverage our operating scale, strengthen our commitment to innovation and enhance our ability to offer our guests new products and experiences, all while providing opportunities to enhance the efficiency of our fleet.”

No other details about the ships were released. Financing is already in place to fund 80% of the cost for the four ships among the Oceania and Regent orders, but financing for the four NCL ships is not finalized.

The eight ships expects to add 25,000 more to the three cruise lines’ passenger capacity.

In addition, the line is set to construct a multi-ship pier at Great Stirrup Cay, the popular Bahamas private destination visited by all three brands. The move follows the introduction of a dock that can support two Oasis-class vessels at neighboring Perfect Day at Coco Cay for Royal Caribbean while other private Bahamas destinations including Disney’s Castaway Cay and its new Lookout Cay at Lighthouse Point feature tenderless docks for easy access.

“We are likewise excited with the addition of a new pier at Great Stirrup Cay to support our increased capacity in the Caribbean and multiple ships to call on the island, enhancing our guest experience and bringing seamless and reliable access to our private island year-round,” Sommer said.
