Which Ford Excursion Engine Is the Best?

Which Ford Excursion Engine Is the Best?

Diesel, gas, conversion, or swapped? F-150 Online members mull their favorite Excursion engine options!

Ah, the Ford Excursion. Perhaps no greater symbol of American ingenuity has ever existed on this planet. The massive, Super Duty-based beast of an SUV hit the market here in the U.S. back in 2000, but like a shooting star, it had disappeared by 2007. Blame it on those pesky environmentalists or a spike in gas prices, but either way, we’ll probably never have the option of buying a new Ford Excursion ever again.

Despite its short run, we Ford fans can’t get enough of this utilitarian behemoth. So we scour the used car market, scooping up the few decent examples left out there in the world. Which means if you want one, choosing the right motor is an important task. And that’s why F-150 Online member  vet3138  headed to the forums in search of some powerplant advice.

Ford Excursion

“Been in the market for an Excursion since getting an RV. Test drove a bulletproofed one. But I’ve never owned a diesel and felt a little overwhelmed by all the meticulous maintenance required to keep it from taking a dump. I have been planning to go with a 6.8 (hauling about 5,000 lbs plus family of 6 and luggage). But a destroked one has come up for sale not too far away. The price is really good but I’m afraid of it being a glitchy frankencar. They put in a 5.9 Cummins high pressure common rail.  Any advice? Pass? Check it out (obviously take to diesel shop and let them check it out since I’m a diesel rookie)? Certain things to look for?”

Unsurprisingly, many people, including  glc , advise against buying something with a mismatched motor.

“I’d keep looking for a 6.8 gas or 7.3 diesel Excursion. I would not touch one with a 6.0 diesel or a frankenmod. If you find one with a 5.4, it won’t be a speed demon but it should tow 5,000 pounds okay.”

2003 Ford Excursion review: Our expert's take

Posted on 12/9/02 Vehicle Overview Shoppers looking for the largest sport utility vehicle in any showroom must turn to Ford. The Excursion measures nearly 19 feet long — that’s nearly 21 inches longer than the company’s full-size Expedition, and it is more than 7 inches longer than its next closest rivals, the Chevrolet Suburban and GMC Yukon XL.

Built on the same platform as Ford’s F-250 Super Duty pickup truck, the Excursion exceeds an 8,500-pound gross vehicle weight rating (the vehicle’s weight plus what it can carry in passengers and cargo), which makes it exempt from federal emissions and fuel-economy requirements. Ford has been promoting environmental concerns in connection with its SUV lineup, which includes an announcement that the Excursion qualifies as a Low Emissions Vehicle (LEV).

Environmentalists have never stopped jeering at the jumbo Excursion, citing its close-to-insatiable fuel consumption. The standard 44-gallon fuel tank is indicative of the vehicle’s unappetizing gas mileage, though Ford emphasizes the fact that it gives the vehicle a long range between fill-ups.

The Excursion comes with rear-wheel drive or four-wheel drive (4WD). A new Eddie Bauer series joins the XLT and Limited models for 2003, and they will feature an Arizona Beige grille insert and fascias. Early in 2003, a new 6.0-liter Power Stroke diesel engine will debut, and it will deliver 325 horsepower and 550 pounds-feet of torque. A new TorqShift five-speed-automatic transmission will accompany that diesel engine. New 16-inch forged wheels and an in-dash six-CD changer go on the Limited edition, and all A-pillars on the driver’s side gain grab handles.

Despite rising fuel prices in 2000 and into 2001, Ford’s behemoth SUV managed to sell well enough. But total sales for 2001 dipped by 31.7 percent to just 34,710 units, as reported by Automotive News . In July 2002, Ford sources acknowledged that production of the Excursion will end after the 2004 model year.

Exterior Even though the Excursion is abundantly sized, traditional SUV styling includes four side doors. Ford claims that the Excursion’s back doors are wider than those on the Suburban for easier access to the middle and rear seats. The rear door is a tri-panel arrangement, which features a window on top that flips up and twin Dutch doors below that open to the sides. A BlockerBeam runs across the vehicle below the front bumper to prevent cars from sliding underneath it in the event of a collision.

Aluminum wheels hold 16-inch tires. The Excursion rides a 137.1-inch wheelbase, stretches 226.7 inches long overall and has an 8.1-inch ground clearance. Two-wheel-drive (2WD) models are 77.2 inches high, vs. 80.2 inches high for the 4×4 editions. A standard trailer hitch provides similar protection at the rear.

Interior The Excursion has a nine-passenger capacity, plus 48 cubic feet of cargo volume behind the rear seat. The seats of the second-row split bench tip and fold forward to allow easier access to the third row. The rear bench seat is removable and rolls on built-in wheels. The cargo volume grows to 146 cubic feet with the rear seat removed and the middle bench folded down; that space can carry a 4-by-8-foot plywood sheet. Optional power-adjustable accelerator and brake pedals adjust within a 3-inch range to suit individual drivers.

Under the Hood Three engines are available in the Excursion. A 255-hp, 5.4-liter V-8 is standard on 2WD models. A 310-hp, 6.8-liter V-10 goes into 4WD models and is optional on 4x2s, and an optional 7.3-liter V-8 turbo-diesel produces 250 hp. These engines team with a four-speed-automatic transmission. A new 325-hp Power Stroke 6.0-liter diesel will arrive during the 2003 model year; it will team with a new five-speed-automatic transmission. The Excursion’s towing capacity is as high as 11,000 pounds with the V-10 or diesel engine.

Safety Antilock brakes are standard, but side-impact airbags are not available.

Driving Impressions Describing the drive in an Excursion is easy: You’re in a truck, period. Expect the typical engine and transmission drone found in trucks, coupled with ride quality that bears little resemblance to a passenger car. Ford’s newly redesigned Expedition yields a far more pleasing experience overall — including more satisfactory acceleration — and the slightly smaller model has enough interior space to suit most buyers.

The Excursion’s new Power Stroke diesel engine performs admirably, but it enhances the sensation of being in a full-fledged truck. A Power Stroke diesel Excursion managed to climb some steep grades but at a leisurely pace.

Edmunds' Expert Review

  • Tows plenty of weight, provides safe haven for the family, carries lots of stuff.
  • Won't fit in a standard garage, drives like a loaded U-Haul, horrific fuel economy, hard to park, can't beat the Suburban at its own game.

Performance is beefed up to 250 horsepower on the 7.3-liter Power Stroke turbodiesel V8 and all engines are now LEV compliant. An in-dash six-disc CD player is made available. The Excursion XLT gets platinum cladding and standard chrome steel wheels, and the Limited offers standard power signal aero mirrors, foglamps and an optional rear-seat entertainment system.

Edmunds says

Too much truck for too many people. Buy a Suburban if you need a nine-passenger SUV that can tow heavy stuff.

Cost to Drive Cost to drive estimates for the 2001 Ford Excursion XLT 2WD 4dr SUV (5.4L 8cyl 4A) and comparison vehicles are based on 15,000 miles per year (with a mix of 55% city and 45% highway driving) and energy estimates of N/A undefined in California.

Vehicle overview.

In a classic "bigger is better" move, Ford has decided to up the SUV ante by producing the largest Bradymobile yet. The Excursion offers more interior room and cargo capacity than the previous heavyweight title-holder, the Chevrolet Suburban. At the same time, Ford is touting the Excursion's "earth-friendly" aspects like an engine lineup that meets LEV standards and the fact that 85 percent of the Excursion, by weight, is recyclable (never mind that 85 percent of an Excursion still equals about 2.5 Honda Civics).

The Excursion's base engine is a 5.4-liter V8 on two-wheel-drive models or a 6.8-liter V10 on models equipped with four-wheel drive. Optional with either drivetrain is a 7.3-liter V8 diesel that makes 250 horsepower and 500 pound-feet of earth-shaking torque. All engines come with a four-speed automatic transmission as standard equipment; no manual transmission is offered in the Excursion.

Two trim levels are available. The base XLT model includes a three-piece rear door, running boards, remote keyless entry, four-wheel disc brakes with ABS, an AM/FM/cassette/CD stereo, a 40/20/40 split-bench front seat and a third-row removable bench seat. Angle up to the Limited trim level and you get a leather interior, front captain's chairs, woodgrain trim, rear-seat audio controls, a trip computer, power rear-quarter windows, aluminum wheels, illuminated running boards, power signal aero mirrors and foglamps. An optional rear seat entertainment system, which includes a 6.4-inch overhead LCD monitor and a VCR, is new for this year.

Buy an Excursion and you get tons of cargo- and passenger-carrying capacity, plus the security of knowing that no one else on the road will try to mess with you. Of course, you also get the huge inconvenience of not being able to park in certain garages or use some car wash facilities, and then there's the possibility that other people will assume that, by driving such a behemoth, you're trying to overcompensate for some other area in which you may be lacking. But if you're in the market for such a vehicle, and neither the Chevy Suburban nor the GMC Yukon XL does it for you size-wise, this is your SUV. Just keep in mind that driving the Excursion is like piloting a loaded U-Haul, and you're going to have to become an ultra-safety-conscious driver.

Since it's based on the F-250 Super Duty (the front doors, fenders, and hood will swap between them), Ford was able to develop the Excursion with a bare-minimum investment of company funds. This means a large profit margin for each Excursion sold, even by SUV standards. These same market forces were behind the Cadillac Escalade, Lincoln Navigator and Lexus LX470. We've begun to wonder how far this SUV thing can go, but if people keep buying them, automakers will keep building them.

Ford Makes Significant Interior Changes to the 2025 Expedition

2025 expedition to launch soon interest heightens due to leaked photos of the new interior what are the changes that stand out.

F ord’s large SUV Expedition was produced in 1996 and is a popular model today. Ahead of the launch of this SUV’s new model, the interior has been leaked, raising expectations. The Expedition has a reasonable price compared to many large SUVs in the U.S., a major producing country for large SUVs. Ford’s awareness is high in South Korea, so it will be great news for those planning to purchase it.

The new Expedition, scheduled to be launched in 2025, has had spy shots consistently leaked, making it easy to grasp the exterior design. However, this is the first photo taken mainly of the interior center fascia, and we can expect major changes.

Resembling its Luxury counterpart, Lincoln

The interior of the new Expedition is similar to Lincoln’s premium SUV, the Nautilus. This shows that Ford has adopted a luxurious design as a premium brand. Also, looking at leaked photos of the vehicle’s interior, you can see a long screen extending from the instrument panel to the center fascia. As expected, it appears to have a screen similar to the panoramic display applied to the new Lincoln Nautilus.

In the case of most new models released these days, touch operations are often used on the wide screen instead of physical buttons. However, as this model is an American-style vehicle, physical buttons are still used more than touch buttons. There will be differences of opinion among consumers regarding this part.

Scheduled to be unveiled at 2024 New York International Auto Show

Although no details are known about the powertrain, it is expected to be equipped with a V6 3.5L twin-turbocharged engine with 380 horsepower, and the higher version is expected to produce up to 400 horsepower. While speculation is rampant as detailed information has not been released, some have predicted that the engine from the Ford pickup model F-150 may be installed. There is also the possibility of a hybrid system being installed.

The 2025 Ford Expedition will be revealed at the 2024 New York International Auto Show. It is expected to be launched in the U.S., where demand for large SUVs is steady, and in South Korea, where demand has recently increased, but the specific launch date has not been revealed.

Popular in South Korea But Somewhat Expensive It is likely to sell only if the price is competitive

In South Korea, it was sold starting in 2021 , and it was possible to experience the Expedition for less than 100 million won ( about $ 75,585). Still, with the launch of the facelift version, the price exceeded 100 million won ( about $75,585), reducing consumers’ willingness to purchase.

Lincoln’s Aviator is a mid-size luxury SUV with a slightly lower weight than the Expedition. Still, it starts at around 90 million won ( about $ 68,027) for a luxury brand model, so it feels relatively cheap. Its competitor in the same class, the Chevrolet Tahoe, does not exceed 100 million won ( about $ 75 585). Therefore, a price cut is needed when a new Expedition is launched in South Korea .

1 - Select your jet aircraft

L-29 delfin trainer jet.

The L-29 Delfin trainer jet is a Soviet military plane produced in Czechoslovakia between 1963 and 1974. At its time, the L-29 was the primary trainer jet for the Soviet Air Force’s pilots .

Its turbojet engine producing close to 9kN of thrust allows the L-29 to climb at an impressive rate of 14m/s. The plane top speed is 820 km/h , similar to most conventional airliners.

Put-in Tours invites you to the copilot seat of this legendary training jet for a unique and unforgettable flying experience .

L-39 Albatros fighter jet

The L-39 Albatros has been developed to succeed the L-29 Delfin as primary trainer jet for the Soviet Air Forces from the early 1970s on to the late 1990s.

Additionally to its versatile trainer role, the L39 was being used as a strategic reconnaissance aircraft and in combat as a light ground attack aircraft .

The L-39 is powered by a turbofan engine, developing close to 17kN of thrust. The jet rate of climb is a skyrocketing 21m/s and its top speed a whooshing 910km/h .

With its impressive performances, the L-39 is the perfect ride for your most extreme flying experience in Moscow.
