portrait of Kevin

Kevin Barnes

A fun loving guy, Kevin has a daily pun ready for the Lakewood team. Kevin likes to pair his love of dry wine with his dry sense of humor. He can be spotted easily because he will be the one wearing a tie dye shirt or one of his many Hawaiian shirts.

Our Stewardess Kathleen

Kathleen Dafoe

Kathleen is a seasoned veteran of the Seneca Lake Wine Trail with more than a decade of local wine knowledge and wit to share. She is a big fan of our Cabernet Franc and if you are lucky she might share some amazing recipes she makes and enjoys with our Chardonnay.

Our Stewardess Monica

Monica Fredell

A native of the midwest, Monica brings a great combination of knowledge and an adventurous spirit to the Lakewood team. Outside of work she is an avid gardener, beekeeper, and runner. She also enjoys walks with her dogs, and the amazing meals her husband Jim prepares.

Our Stewardess Vicki

Vicki Gardner

Vicki grew-up in Schuyler County but lived away for many years while her husband Russell was serving in the military. Upon returning to the area, Vicki worked for a local garden center until she made a change and joined the team at Lakewood. Her gentle demeanor will make your tasting experience relaxing and enjoyable.

Our Stewardess Tami

Tami Grawunder

A Finger Lakes native, Tami found her calling 28 years ago in the wine industry. She enjoys talking to guests about Lakewood Vineyards wines and the ever-growing wine region she calls home. Visitors from Germany are pleased to find that Tami is bi-lingual, and visitors from everywhere find her generous and helpful.

Our Stewardess Kathe greeting customers

Kathe Hayes

After retiring from a career in mental health, it seemed only logical for Kathe to continue to help people with their outlook on life. But now she does it by offering great wine for tasting. Kathe has enjoyed Lakewood wine since the winery began, so being in the tasting room is an exciting marriage of her two interests.

Our Stewardess Anisha

Anisha Hendrickson

Anisha is the light of Lakewood that never goes out. Her energy and zeal delight both guests and staff. When not at work, Anisha enjoys spending time with her husband, Chad; sons, Isaac and Elliot; and their two dogs.

Our Steward Terence

Terence Lane

Terence came to the Finger Lakes following the pandemic closure of New York City’s dining scene where he worked as a Sommelier. His extensive restaurant experience makes him a go-to for wine and food pairing suggestions. He enjoys exploring the natural wonders and wines of the region.

Our Stewardess Michele

Michele Smith

Michele grew up next door to Lakewood Farm and is a lifelong friend of the Stamp family. After returning to the area in 2019, Michele shares her talents with Lakewood, where her local knowledge and approachable, friendly, demeanor make it seem as if she has always been here.

Lynnette, Past Stewardess

Lynnette Lenzer

Quick with a smile and willing to help anywhere she was needed, Lynnette was brave enough to be our greeter on busy fall Saturdays. She enjoyed pouring Lakewood wines and was often heard laughing with guests as they shared their wine experiences with her … and sometimes even their dance moves.

wine tours in seneca lake ny

Rachael Miller

Rachael’s father is a decorated Finger Lakes winemaker, and you could say Rachael grew-up in the Finger Lakes wine business. After several years down south working in wine and hospitality, Rachael returned to her hometown and joined our Lakewood team. Her warm smile and easy laugh will make guests feel right at home while enjoying their wine tasting at Lakewood.

wine tours in seneca lake ny

Amy Wysocki

An engineer by trade, and a very talented seamstress, Amy spent many years helping her family at their bustling apple farm. She has a knack for entertaining children with stories and paper tricks, and is sure to help tasters find just the right wines for their palates.

Partners & Marketeers at winery entrance

Partners & Marketeers

;Guests are likely to see any of these people when visiting Lakewood Vineyards. One of them might even pour you a flight of wines. Most of the time this crew is working in the background, tending to many behind-the-scenes aspects of the winery business: paying bills, promoting off-premise sales, preparing payroll, setting the work schedule, shipping wine, stocking the shelves, submitting labels for approval, and countless other operational and management tasks.

The partners and marketeers are all related by blood or winery ownership—or both—but primarily by a passion for making Lakewood Vineyards a premier winery delivering delicious wines, memorable experiences, and second-to-none Finger Lakes wine tours.

Our Lakewood Alumni

These familiar faces at Lakewood Vineyards have moved-on to other adventures. While we miss them, we know they are doing great things in their new endeavors.

Our Stewardess Sage portrait

Sage Garrison

One of the newest members of the Lakewood Vineyards team, Sage joined us seamlessly. She is quick to laugh, willing to try anything, and happy to share her ever-expanding knowledge of wine. Growing-up nearby, Sage is a great source of local information and “little known” waterfall locations.

Our Steward David driving golf cart

David Hertel

A successful bed and breakfast owner, David came to Lakewood to learn about Finger Lakes wines and to share his enthusiasm for the region’s many assets with wine tasters. He spoils the Lakewood crew with his baked goodies and shows sincere interest in knowing about visitors’ plans and adventures during their Finger Lakes sojourns, helping them make the most out of their Finger Lakes wine tours & tastings.

Our Stewardess Emma

Though Emma had been coming to work with her Mom, Teresa, since she was an infant, she officially began working at Lakewood in the summers while attending Hartwick College. Though she seems like a gentle soul, Emma was a powerhouse on the lacrosse field while at Hartwick. She came back to join the Lakewood family when she graduated. In addition to working in the tasting room, Emma also assists with shipping and media activities for Lakewood Vineyards.

Our Steward Chris moving boxes of wine

Chris Stephany

Whether it’s surf boards or Finger Lakes wine, Chris’s passion for the past few years has been helping people find the “right fit” for them. He dives in wherever he is needed; in addition to pouring wine he’s also worked in the cellar and helped pick grapes. He calls Watkins Glen home.

Norrie, Past Stewardess

Norrie Cornelius

Norrie (a.k.a. the “Wine Wench”) had been part of Lakewood Vineyards since 1998. Her love of people, storytelling, and our wines made all of our visitors’ tastings a pleasure. After meeting Norrie, you felt like you’de made a new friend.

John Damian harvesting grapes

John Damain

John came to Lakewood Vineyards in 1996. With prior experience working in a restaurant with an extensive wine selection, he had gained a great knowledge of wines but had never experienced wine production. At Lakewood, he asked if he could work harvest. After 15 years on our winemaking team, John transitioned to vineyard work and after several years working on the farm, he has retired. He now has more time to pursue his passion for fishing.

Kennedey, Alumna

Kennedy Heichel

High school valedictorian and collegiate pole vaulter, Kennedy dived right in when she joined the Lakewood team. Now finishing her education, she still stops in to see us from time to time.

Mary, Past Stewardess

Mary Beth Hollenbeck

Ready with warm smile and laugh, Mary Beth joined the Lakewood team with experience in wedding and event planning and the tourism industry. She is an outspoken and knowledgeable advocate for the Finger Lakes and was always ready to help people find Lakewood wines they love and an experience in the area that would be long remembered. When not working, Mary Beth enjoyed exploring the area with her husband, Eric, and dog, Bayla.

Jordan, Past Stewardess

Jordan Knapp

Jordan started coming to Lakewood as an infant with her mother, Teresa, and officially began working when she was old enough to serve wine to Lakewood’s guests. Her years growing up at Lakewood added an interesting perspective when she entertained tasters. A graduate from Nazareth College, Jordan helped with social media activities and worked in the tasting room.

Vicky, Past Stewardess

Vicky Shaban

Vicky came to Lakewood by way of a road sign and was a welcome addition to the tasting room crew. We were lucky she found Lakewood, and lucky she deemed it the right place to share her wine knowledge. Her gentle demeanor and pleasant presentation made guests want to linger over their flights of wines.

jaclyn stirring grapes in harvest bin

10 Best Seneca Lake Wineries (2024 Wine Expert Picks)

Forge Cellars tasting room - one of the best Seneca Lake wineries

Looking to do some swirling and sipping in the Finger Lakes, NY? If you’re planning a trip to this stunning region, you can’t miss exploring the incredible Seneca Lake wineries. In this complete guide, I’m popping the cork on all the details you need for a wine-filled adventure.

Not only is Seneca the largest and deepest of the Finger Lakes, but it has the most wineries. The conditions make it ripe for producing incredible aromatic white wines, elegant reds, and delicious dessert wines.

But with more than 50 wineries to choose from (plus many others in the surrounding Finger Lakes wine country), it can be hard to narrow your list down.

Don’t worry, I’ve got you covered! As an American Wine Expert and WSET-certified wine blogger , I’ve done the sipping and swirling for you. And I cherry-picked this shortlist of the best wineries on Seneca Lake.

So, get ready for an unforgettable wine tasting journey through Seneca Lake’s finest.

The Best Seneca Lake Wineries

1. hermann j. wiemer vineyard.

Hermann J Wiemer tasting room

Hermann J. Wiemer was one of the first to successfully plant vinifera vines on Seneca Lake. Hermann’s family’s winemaking roots run deep, with his mother producing wine in the Mosel Valley and his father in charge of the Agricultural Experiment Station in Bernkastel, Germany.

In the 1960s, Hermann took a job in the Finger Lakes. After arriving, he discovered the region was a lot like the Mosel Valley, and thought, “I bet I can create similar wines here.”

And in 1973, he took the plunge, purchasing land and planting experimental vines. By 1977, Hermann’s 9-acre blocks of Riesling and Chardonnay were a success. And in 1979, Hermann J. Wiemer Vineyard was born.

Since then, the wines have won prestigious awards like the Governor’s Cup. And they’ve expanded by acquiring Standing Stone Vineyards on the eastern side of Seneca.

Fred Merwarth, Hermann’s apprentice, runs things today. He’s increased focus on sustainable farming that’s paid off with the HJW Vineyard achieving Demeter Biodynamic Certification. And is using small-batch, low-intervention winemaking, including indigenous yeast and neutral Hungarian oak.

Wines to Try

Try the Riesling HJW to experience a wine from Hermann’s original plantings. The older vines give great concentration to the ripe pear, apricot, and honeydew melon notes.

And the Riesling Reserve Dry, a special blend from the HJW and Magdalena Vineyards, is a true treat, available only in the best years.

I was also loved their Blaufränkisch (aka Lemberger), with dark cherry, blackcurrant, and a touch of clove and nutmeg.

When you visit, their friendly wine educators will set you up with a custom wine flight. Mix and match 2.5-ounce pours to discover your personal faves.

Outside food is allowed so feel free to bring snacks or lunch to enjoy at their winery picnic areas. And be sure to make a reservation for tastings. It’s a popular spot!

The other two pages offer additional information, including wine tour details on the left and accommodation options on the right.

2. Red Tail Ridge Winery

Red Tail Ridge pavilion

Mike Schnelle and Nancy Irelan founded Red Tail Ridge Winery in 2005. Nancy’s got a Ph.D. in grape genetics and 35+ years of wine biz experience, including a gig as VP of Viticulture & Enology at Gallo Wines.

Mike took a different route, with a finance degree and a background in construction. But, after some viticulture courses at UC Davis, he was all in for their Finger Lakes venture. The two are joined by their adorable winery dog, Bueller.

Red Tail Ridge is all about sustainable viticulture, being the first LEED Gold Certified Green winery in NY State. And they use geothermal energy for heating and cooling in the wine production process.

As James Beard Award semifinalists in 2019 and 2020, they’re making a name for Red Tail Ridge. Plus, their wine “Good Karma” does good too, with a portion of sales supporting hunger relief efforts.

Red Tail Ridge tasting room

When it comes to the wine, they’ve got a stunning lineup. My fave was the delicately sparkling Perpétuelle Change, made using a solera system, just like in sherry production . And if you’re a fan of Lambrusco, try the Sparkling Rebel With a Cause, a dry red bubbly with black cherry goodness.

The Teroldego, a Northern Italian grape, is also a unique find. It has beautiful black raspberry and blackcurrant fruit and earthy notes that linger on your palate.

Reserve your spot at the tasting bar, newly upgraded to a larger space. Take your pick of 5 wines from their rotating list of current releases. And be guided through them by a knowledgeable staff member.

Or head to the covered outdoor pavilion for self-guided flights or glasses. It’s the perfect place for sipping and soaking in the vineyard views. And don’t worry, your furry friends are welcome too!

3. Kemmeter Wines

Kemmeter Wines Sans Dumplings building

Located on the west side of Seneca Lake, this winery and dumpling shop is the creation of Johannes and Imelda Reinhardt.

Their story began when Johannes, who comes from a family of Bavarian winemakers, crossed paths with Imelda, a food scientist from a tiny Indonesian island. After some twists and turns, they joined forces to create the Kemmeter Wines and Sans Dumplings dream — to spoil guests with the best food and wine around!

After working at Anthony Road Wine Company, Johannes planted Kemmeter’s first vines in 2014. And by 2018, they were growing all their own grapes. The care they put into each vine shows in their wines, thanks to extra practices like green pruning that help get the perfect ripeness.

Kemmeter Wines tasting room

Their bottle labels reflect the wines’ symphony of flavors, bearing part of Johannes’ favorite Bach piece. And all of the estate wines were exceptional, from the everyday drinking Sonero to the ageable Kemmeter and the rare SanSan, reserved for the best vintages.

I especially loved the SanSan, a Riesling blend with Gewürztraminer adding a floral twist to juicy tropical fruit. And The Controlled One vs. The Spontaneous One is a unique comparison of how using cultivated vs. wild yeast can completely change the wine’s character.

To taste Kemmeter’s wines, you’ll need to make a reservation well in advance. They’re only open Thursday through Saturday, and demand is high. But trust me, it’s worth it!

Prepare for an intimate hour with Johannes himself in the small tasting room. He’ll guide you through a blind flight and discuss the differences the wines express. Then reveal these delightful mysteries at the end.

And don’t leave without hitting up Imelda’s dumpling shop! Take your order out to the picnic tables and enjoy some seriously good dumplings surrounded by stunning vineyard views.

4. Forge Cellars

Forge Cellars Summer House tasting room

Louis Barroul comes from 14 generations of French winemaking in the Gigondas region of Southern Rhône. After taking over Château Saint Cosme, his family’s estate, he wanted a new challenge.

Louis traveled the world looking for the right spot and found it in the Finger Lakes. And in 2011, he joined forces with longtime friend Rick Rainey to create Forge Cellars .

Embracing low yields and sustainable practices, they work with growers that manage 16 different vineyards. The wines are spontaneously fermented in small batches using indigenous yeast. And aged in neutral or old oak to give texture but not too much flavor.

Forge Cellars outdoor seating

I loved Forge’s single-vineyard Rieslings. The three I tasted were produced exactly the same way. So, each tells a unique story about where it comes from.

The sandy loam and shale soils of Willow create wines with elegant floral and citrus notes. Railroad’s stony soils result in a richer and creamier texture. And Tango Oaks’ steep slopes and low topsoil give it more herbal notes and minerality.

I also sampled the Pinot Noir Classique, an earthy wine that was a delicious pairing with bites of Whitney Cheese from Vermont’s Jasper Hill Farms.

For a fun and educational experience, book a guided group tasting in The Summer House. You’ll get in-depth insights into the vineyards and winemaking process.

For a more casual experience, stop by The Salon for a flight or a glass. Here, you can also taste wines from Forge’s French sister wineries too. And enjoy artisanal foods like local cheese and tinned fish that pair perfectly with their bone-dry Rieslings.

Plus, stay tuned for a brand-new tasting room coming soon!

5. Boundary Breaks

Boundary Breaks lawn with adirondack chairs

Bruce Murray, a New York native, had his wine epiphany in a little Thai joint in LA. And that was it. He kissed his publishing career goodbye!

In 2008, he found a perfect 120-acre plot, just begging for some Riesling magic. Since Boundary Breaks’ first harvest in 2011, Bruce’s Rieslings have been raking in awards, landing on Wine Enthusiast’s Top 100 Wines in the World list three times.

But there’s more to this love story. Bruce reconnected with his high school friend Diana, and the two tied the knot in 2017. Diana brings her botany degree and plant science teaching experience to the table. Plus, she manages the tasting room.

With clay-rich soils, Bruce took the extra step of installing special drainage pipes, making the vine’s roots reach deeper. The wines themselves are crafted through partnerships with local producers like Sheldrake Point Winery and Lakewood Vineyards.

Boundary Breaks picnic lunch and glass of white wine

From Boundary Breaks’ range of Rieslings. I loved the Extra Dry Riesling with its crisp acidity and juicy pear and peach.

The Cabernet Franc was a standout too, with cherry and cranberry and a hint of pepper. And for you dessert wine lovers, don’t miss the ice wine. The sweet peach and honey notes are perfectly balanced with mouthwatering acidity.

No need to fuss with reservations. Just swing by their outdoor tent or indoor tasting room for a guided flight of these award-winning wines. Or grab a glass of wine and chill on their patio Adirondack chairs, soaking in the breathtaking views of Seneca Lake.

Hungry? On weekends Boundary Breaks also offers sandwich service. And check out Sunset Saturdays for evening wine, live music, and local food vendors. Furry friends are welcome anytime at their dog run.

6. Ravines Wine Cellars

Ravines Wine Cellars patio

Founded in 2001 by Morten Hallgren and his chef wife Lisa, Ravines Wine Cellars brings the best of wine and food together.

Morten grew up in a winery-running family in Provence, France. With a degree in enology and viticulture, he honed his skills in Bordeaux, Texas, and North Carolina before landing in the Finger Lakes. After a stint as chief winemaker at Dr. Konstantin Frank Winery, he broke out on his own.

Ravines sustainably farms grapes on their 130 acres of vineyards. And they’re all about dry, vinifera wines produced using European winemaking practices. They even pioneered the iconic bone-dry, mineral-tinged Riesling style that the Finger Lakes is known for.

Ravines Wine Cellars entrance

I loved the White Springs Riesling — floral, mineral, and oh-so-aromatic. Oh, and if you’re a fan of Sancerre, try their Sauvignon Blanc that’s made in a similar style.

And for something different, don’t miss the Sparkling Riesling. The nobly rotted grapes give it golden hues and delicious flavors of honey and dried orange.

Ravines has two tasting rooms: one on Keuka Lake and one in Geneva on Seneca Lake. The Geneva location is a historic barn that sits next to their White Springs Vineyard.

Make a reservation for a tasting and enjoy seasonal small plates. Or indulge in their tasting table experience in the cellar. Rated one of the top winery kitchens by Food & Wine Magazine, you won’t be disappointed.

7. Anthony Road Wine Company

Anthony Road Wine Company entrance

Ann and John Martini are the wine-loving duo who started Anthony Road back in the 1970s. John worked at Cornell’s Agricultural Experiment Station, while Ann managed the vineyard.

At first, they sold the grapes to Taylor Wine Company. But then decided, “Hey, why not make our own wines?” So, in 1990, they took the plunge, and the rest is history! Fast forward to today and their kids are now part of running the show.

Their Martini Vineyard has the OG plantings. But they’ve since added the Nutt Road Vineyard. Plus, a teaching and demonstration vineyard in partnership with Cornell.

Anthony Road welcome sign

If you’re a Pinot Gris fan, check out their all-Pinot flight. The delicate Pinot Gris Rosé was a standout for me. I also enjoyed the Lemberger with its tasty black cherry and chocolate truffle notes.

And if you’re a bubbly fan, ask about their traditional method sparklers. The Sparkling Riesling and Blanc de Noir are stunning!

Tastings are by appointment. But if they have space, they’ll take walk-ins. Or you can enjoy a glass or bottle of vino on the veranda that’s open daily. They even have lawn games available like bocce and cornhole.

Feeling artsy? Take a self-guided tour of their garden and gallery, featuring local artists’ works. It’s the perfect pairing with their artfully crafted wines!

8. Red Newt Cellars

Red Newt Cellars wine tasting flights

In the late ‘80s, David and Debra Whiting connected over a shared passion for food and wine. David worked as a winemaker at several Finger Lakes wineries, while Debra ventured into gourmet cheesecake and catering businesses.

In 1998, the perfect opportunity arose. David began making his own wine under the Red Newt Cellars label. And Debra opened the Red Newt Bistro the following summer.

It was a dream come true, combining their love for regional wine and cuisine. Sadly, Debra passed away in 2011. But her vision lives on through the Debra Whiting Foundation.

In 2014, David handed over winemaking to Kelby Russell. This Finger Lakes native got his start at Fox Run Vineyards. Now he even has his own “Kelby James Russell” wine series.

Red Newt sources grapes from various vineyards on Seneca, including Nutt Road and Tango Oaks. And they focus on aromatic white wines like Riesling, Gewürztraminer, and Pinot Gris.

Red Newt Cellars wine bottle

I especially liked their Grüner Veltliner’s zesty lime flavors and herbaceous grassiness. It’s a delicious summer sipper. The Dry Riesling was great too, but I snagged a bottle of their top Riesling to try at home.

Grab a reservation for seated tastings and food experiences. Inside or out, flights, glasses, bottles, and tadpoles (adorable personal-sized bottles) await. Or swing by the bar for standing tastings.

Plus, keep an eye on the calendar for special events. Susan Waterbury, David’s violinist wife and co-owner, keeps things entertaining with live classical and jazz music performances.

9. Fox Run Vineyards

Fox Run Vineyards

Fox Run Vineyards ’ story starts in 1984 when Larry and Adele Wildrick planted the first grapes. Fast forward a decade, and Scott Osborn and his buddy Andy Hale bought the place.

They made the smart decision to bring on Peter Bell, fresh from working at Dr. Konstantin Frank Winery. He’s become a bit of a legend in the Finger Lakes, mentoring others like Kelby Russell of Red Newt.

After 27 years Peter retired, and Craig Hosbach stepped in. Scott and his wife Ruth also teamed up with Ruth’s sister and brother-in-law Kathleen and Albert Zafonte to make Fox Run an all family-owned winery.

Fox Run uses all estate-grown grapes that are sustainably farmed. Plus, they now operate on 100% self-generated solar power.

Fox Run Vineyards Dry Riesling

The Fox Run Rosé is totally crushable with yummy strawberry and cranberry flavors. And for a fun comparison, try the unoaked vs. oaked Lemberger. The unoaked version is light and elegant, while the oak brings a bit more tannin and spice.

No reservations are needed for their indoor seated tastings, featuring 4 flight options. And if you’re a foodie, go for the Taste Buds Flight with 5 wines and delicious food pairings.

Or grab one of their self-guided wine flights to enjoy outdoors under their flower-adorned pergola. And check out the Wine Barn on Saturdays, serving up glasses, bottles, snacks, and flights.

Plus, they’ve got a seasonal café, wine tours, and if you want the ultimate wine country experience, you can even rent their Vineyard House.

10. Once Finger Lakes

Once Finger Lakes entrance

While not technically a winery, this wine bar is the spot to hit up if you want to taste the best of the Finger Lakes. From Seneca to Keuka to Cayuga, Once has teamed up with 12 top-notch producers. Including the likes of Dr. Konstantin Frank, Forge Cellars, and Hermann J. Wiemer.

Oh, and it’s pronounced “OHN-say” like eleven in Spanish. Yup, the number of lakes that make up this beautiful region!

The founder, Antonio, was inspired by similar concepts in Australia and Europe. Here, it’s all about sharing local stories and traditions through great wine.

Once white wine flight

Try their discovery flights with themes like best sellers, sparkling, and trailblazers. Oh, and don’t miss the food and wine pairing tastings — Flights & Bites!

My favorite discovery was the Heart & Hands Pinot Noir. With its delightful cherry spice flavors, it was seriously beautiful. Their secret is the perfect site on Cayuga Lake, with limestone-rich soil and just the right sun exposure. You’ll feel like you’re sipping a bit of Burgundy magic right here in New York!

No reservations needed at Once for parties of less than 6. But for big groups, call ahead. And check out their special events like happy hours, brunches, and fancy wine dinners.

Seneca Lake Wine Region

History of seneca lake wineries.

Seneca Lake with vineyard

Way back in the early 1800s, Reverend William Bostwick planted the very first vines in the Finger Lakes on the south end of Keuka Lake.

But it wasn’t until 1866 that the first winery popped up on Seneca Lake. With 100 acres of plantings, Seneca Lake Grape Wine Company had the biggest vineyard in the whole state back then.

In the 1880s, the New York State Agricultural Experiment Station opened shop in Geneva. Their grape breeding and research programs paved the way for others in the grape-growing industry.

By 1900, the Finger Lakes region was up to 50 wineries. But Prohibition hit the region hard in the 1920s. Only the biggest wineries survived, staying afloat with grape juice and sacramental wine.

But the 1970s brought a renaissance! Charles Fournier and Dr. Konstantin Frank had successfully grown vinifera vines at their Keuka Lake wineries . And they expanded these plantings to Seneca. At the same time, a German immigrant named Hermann J. Wiemer planted 140 acres of vinifera on Seneca’s west side.

Soon after, new wineries like Glenora Wine Cellars and Wagner Vineyards followed. Plus, the Agricultural Experiment Station (now part of Cornell) developed French-American hybrid grapes like Cayuga, giving growers more options.

This decade also saw the passing of the NY Farm Winery Act, letting wineries sell directly to the public.

In 1982, the Finger Lakes AVA (American Viticultural Area) became official. And 1986 saw the birth of the Seneca Lake Wine Trail.

The ’90s brought rapid growth, with more than 100 wineries sprouting up throughout the Finger Lakes. Finally, in 2003, Seneca Lake got its own AVA. And here we are today, with more than 50 amazing wineries calling Seneca Lake their home!

Seneca Lake Climate and Terroir

Seneca Lake vineyard row

This cool climate region is no cakewalk when it comes to grape growing. Snow, rain, humidity…you name it, it’s got it.

And with things changing drastically from year to year, there’s no shortage of vintage variation. Just in the last few years 2020 was hot and dry, 2021 was a monsoon, and 2022 had a little of both!

Ancient glaciers carved out the Finger Lakes, leaving all kinds of different soils. From shale to limestone to gravel and silt, it makes for an interesting puzzle when it comes to planting the right grape varieties.

Seneca Lake is the largest of the Finger Lakes by volume. Stretching 35 miles long and diving to depths of more than 600 feet, it’s no wonder it rarely freezes, even in the chilliest winters.

The east side of Seneca Lake gets slightly more warmth from afternoon sunshine.

And the lake acts like a giant temperature moderator for the vineyards. In the spring, the cold water cools the surrounding air and delays budburst, protecting from frosts.

In the fall, the warm water gives off extra warmth and extends the growing season. And being the deepest lake, this effect is magnified even more than smaller ones like Keuka Lake.

Seneca Lake Wines

Like the rest of the Finger Lakes, Riesling is the star of the show in the Seneca Lake AVA. It’s made in a variety of styles. But this region is famous for dry wines with a mineral-water type quality.

But you’ll find plenty of other aromatic and semi-aromatic white grape varieties like Gewürztraminer, Pinot Gris, and Chardonnay .

Thanks to this deeper lake’s extra warmth, red wines do a bit better here than on the other Finger Lakes. Cabernet Franc, Pinot Noir , Lemberger, especially. But you’ll also find Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot.

And there are some excellent sparkling and ice wines being made these days.

You’ll still find some French-American hybrids and Native American varietals sprinkled across this wine region too.

10 Best Seneca Lake Wineries (2024 Wine Tasting Guide)

5 Best Seneca Lake Wineries For Red Wine Lovers • Winetraveler

These Are Some of the Best Seneca Lake Wineries to Visit in 2024 If You Love Red Wine

Despite the fact that Seneca Lake is gaining renown for being a top wine region to visit, there still seems to be a misconception that you cannot find great red wine here. Comments like “oh, but they only make Riesling,” or “it’s too bad they don’t produce dry wine,” seem to be fairly common despite the fact that dozens of wineries have a focus on drier styles and produce amazing reds.

If you’re heading into the Finger Lakes, and are a lover of dry red wines, I suggest challenging yourself to doing a red wine-only tour on Seneca Lake. It’s a fun new way to explore the lakes.

Not sure where to go? Here are several wineries that are producing delicious reds around Seneca Lake. If you’re considering visiting the Finger Lakes region, Rochester International Airport is the closest to the Eastside, Hancock International Airport in Syracuse is closest to the West. Take a look at current flight deals here and some recommended wine country hotels here .

You can also visit Seneca Lake wineries with our highly recommended guided tour , which includes an expert guide and driver. You can also opt to hire a tour guide and driver who focuses on the southern portion of Seneca Lake , who will allow you to plan your day trip to any of the following wineries we discuss, or take their own advice.

Best Seneca Lake Wineries

Winetraveler Rating:

400 Barracks Rd, Geneva, NY 14456

(315) 781-7007

Located just outside of Geneva within a historic barn, Ravines Wine Cellars is the perfect way to kick off your red wine tour. The winery is the passion project of Morten and Lisa Hallgren. Since 2003, they’ve been releasing award-winning wines in the region, with a focus on using classic European varietals. While their single-varietal reds, such as Pinot Noir and Cabernet Franc, are fantastic, it is their blends that are the most impressive.

Named in honor of their son, the Maximilien series is a Bordeaux-style red blend of Cabernet Franc, Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot. Maximilien tends to have notes of plum and black cherry, with hints of baking spice, and strong but smooth tannin. It’s a wine you could easily age for a few years, or drink now.

Looking for something a little different? Their Cerise, the French word for cherry, is a blend of Pinot Noir and Blaufränksich. Fitting for its name, the nose pops with tart cherries, with hints of tobacco and fresh herbs. Its bright cherry acidity and chalky tannin leave you wanting another sip.

Billsboro Winery

4760 W Lake Rd, Geneva, NY 14456

(315) 789-9538

Billsboro Winery was started in 2007 by Vinny and Kim Aliperti, and they’ve focused on making dry red and white wines. When people say that the Finger Lakes don’t have great dry or red wines, I use Billsboro as my example to prove them wrong. Need proof? Former New York State Governor Andrew M. Cuomo announced that Billsboro Winery won the 2016 Governor’s Cup competition at the 31st New York Wine & Food Classic for their 2013 Syrah.

Their Syrah continues to be one of the best wines in the region, and the current release is no exception. Its notes of ripe cherry and black currant, with loads of earth, smoke, and white pepper, and rich, chewy tannin, will convince you that the Finger Lakes is a red wine region.

While all of their red wines are fantastic, I highly suggest trying their Cabernet Franc. It seems now that almost every winery is producing a Cabernet Franc, but few are able to really showcase what this grape has to offer. Billsboro’s is a complex, nuanced exemplar featuring notes of bright cherry, tart raspberry, baking spice, hints of green herbs, and a warm vanilla finish.

Red Tail Ridge Winery

846 NY-14, Penn Yan, NY 14527

(315) 536-4580

Founded by Mike Schnelle and Nancy Irelan, Red Tail Ridge Winery is known for its unique red varietals that they grow on their 52-acre vineyard. The winery consistently receives high accolades for its clean and nuanced wines. Most recently, Irelan was announced as a James Beard Award Semi-Finalist. What is fun about this winery is that the focus isn’t on the classic varietals. Instead, they’ve chosen to grow and make wine from grapes that come from cooler European regions.

The Dornfelder has an interesting nose of black raspberry and black currant, with secondary notes of baking spices, earth, and mint. When sipped, it has a tart plum finish and bright acidity.

One of their more interesting wines is the NV Rebel with a Cause Sparkling, a red, dry, bubbly. This wine is meant to showcase the growing season and the grapes that best represent it. The current blend is 66% Lagrein, 17% Teroldego, & 17% Blaufränksich, which gives the wine a nose of cranberry and currant jam, licorice, mineral, and baking spice.

Shaw Vineyard

3901 NY-14, Dundee, NY 14837

(607) 243-7000

Shaw Vineyard opened its doors in 2007. Prior to that, owner Steve Shaw was known throughout the Finger Lakes for growing vinifera. Unlike many wineries that release wines young, holding on to them only a year or two after harvest, Shaw waits until he thinks the wine is at its peak and ready to drink. That means that on any given visit, you may find some nice surprises from their cellars that may be up to a decade old (and perhaps even older).

Try sampling the Cabernet Sauvignon, with its intense nose of black currant, plum, chocolate, and a hint of nuttiness. It leaves lingering tobacco and vanilla, balanced out by a rich tannin. The eight years of aging have made this a complex and fascinating wine to enjoy.

Looking for something a little lighter? Their Unoaked Cabernet Franc is a nice change from the richer wines you’ve probably been tasting. Instead of notes like almond and vanilla, it has a bright nose of tart raspberry and blackberry, pepper and earth, with a lovely chalky tannin.

Hermann J. Wiemer Vineyard

3962 NY-14, Dundee, NY 14837

(607) 243-7971

Hermann J. Wiemer Vineyard was founded in 1979 by its namesake, a pioneer of vinifera viticulture. For the last decade, the winery has been run by Fred Merwarth and Oscar Bynke. They are one of the top vineyards in the region, and their fantastic wine is only surpassed by their intimate and amazing tasting sessions.

Hermann J. Wiemer Winery | Best Wineries for Red Wine on Seneca Lake

While they are known for their white wines, particularly their Rieslings, they are producing some delicious reds. One of my personal favorites is their Field Blend. It isn’t just a blend of Cabernet Franc, Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, and Lemberger in the bottle, the fields are a mixture of these vines. Each year is a little different, but it tends to have a nose of black fruit, plum, and pepper with big chewy tannins and zingy cherry acid.

You should also try the Lemberger. This is becoming one of the more popular grapes in the region, and Hermann J. Wiemer’s is a great example. The nose is full of cigar box, smoke, raspberry, and red plum. It finishes with light chalky tannins and hints of chocolate.

Standing Stone Vineyards

9934 NY-414, Hector, NY 14841

(607) 582-6051

Founded in 1972, Standing Stone Vineyards is a testament to the visionary spirit of its founders, who saw the promise in the terroir of the Finger Lakes. For many years now, the winery has been meticulously managed by the Peterson family, who have held the helm and continued to champion the region’s viticultural potential. This vineyard stands as a beacon in the region, its wines capturing the unique essence of Finger Lakes, with a tasting experience that is nothing short of extraordinary, rivaling the best in the world.

As you plan your visit to the eastern shores of Seneca Lake, don’t miss the chance to savor Standing Stone’s signature “Saperavi”. This vineyard is especially renowned for its white wines, like the vibrant and complex Rieslings, but the Reds shouldn’t be overlooked. Saperavi, for instance, is a unique wine that’s native to Georgia but has found a new home here in the Finger Lakes. Its characteristics change subtly with each vintage, typically presenting a bouquet of ripe dark berries, hints of spice, and an earthy undertone. It’s beautifully balanced with a sturdy structure, soft tannins, and a refreshing acidity.

Equally compelling is the Cabernet Franc from Standing Stone Vineyards. This varietal is gaining a lot of traction in the region, and their interpretation is truly compelling. The wine opens with an alluring aroma of bell pepper, raspberry, and a touch of cedar. The palate is greeted with smooth tannins and a well-rounded structure, finishing with a hint of dark chocolate and a whisper of smoke.

Atwater Vineyards

5055 NY-414, Burdett, NY 14818

(607) 546-8463

Established in 2000, Atwater Vineyards is a relatively young winery that has quickly made its mark on the Finger Lakes wine scene. The brainchild of Ted Marks, a visionary entrepreneur with a passion for wine, the vineyard has been nurtured under his careful stewardship for the past two decades. In December 2020, Ted handed the reigns to Matt Russo and George Nosis.

Atwater Vineyards has fast established itself as a prominent player in the region, crafting exceptional wines that are a true reflection of the Finger Lakes terroir. The vineyard’s tasting experiences are cherished by visitors, blending the warmth of their hospitality with the captivating beauty of the lakeside vineyard.

Upon your visit to the southwestern bank of Seneca Lake, be sure to indulge in Atwater’s standout “Big Blend”. While the winery is highly reputed for their aromatic white varietals, notably the expressive and lively Rieslings, it’s their reds that also demand attention. The Big Blend is a harmonious medley of Syrah, Cabernet Sauvignon, and Merlot, each contributing to a rich tapestry of flavors. Depending on the vintage, you might discover notes of dark fruit, leather, and a subtle hint of vanilla, all underpinned by a firm structure and velvety tannins that make for an engaging sip.

Atwater’s Cabernet Sauvignon is another must-try. This grape is increasingly popular in the region, and Atwater’s version doesn’t disappoint. Aromas of ripe blackcurrant, tobacco leaf, and a touch of spice give way to a palate that is full-bodied yet elegantly balanced. The finish is long, leaving a delightful trail of mocha and a hint of toasted oak, a testament to the careful aging process in the winery’s cellars.

Zugibe Vineyards – Wine With A View

4248 E Lake Rd, Geneva, NY 14456

(315) 585-6402

Inaugurated in 2005, Zugibe Vineyards is the fruit of the Zugibe family’s hard work and commitment to viticulture, a testament to their deep-rooted love for wine. Anchored on the eastern shores of Seneca Lake, this vineyard is not just known for its stellar wines but also its breathtaking views, offering a panoramic spectacle of the lake and its surrounding beauty. The winery has carved a niche for itself in the region, producing wines that encapsulate the unique essence of the Finger Lakes terroir. The tasting sessions here are as much about the stunning landscape as the wines themselves, offering an immersive, unforgettable experience.

Be sure to sample Zugibe’s acclaimed “Phoenician Blend” during your visit. While Zugibe Vineyards is lauded for its crisp and fragrant whites, especially the Rieslings, their reds are equally compelling. The Phoenician Blend, a harmonious mix of Cabernet Franc, Cabernet Sauvignon, and Lemberger, is a standout. Depending on the vintage, you may encounter a bouquet of ripe red fruits, black pepper, and an earthy hint, paired with robust tannins and a balanced acidity. Don’t miss out on their Lemberger either. Gaining popularity in the region, Zugibe’s interpretation of this grape is exceptional, with a nose boasting of black cherry, smoky undertones, and a touch of spice, while the palate is treated to velvety tannins and a finish hinting at dark chocolate.

Forge Cellars

3775 Mathews Rd, Burdett, NY 14818

(607) 622-8020

Founded in 2011, Forge Cellars is a boutique winery nestled on the eastern slopes of Seneca Lake. A collaborative venture between a trio of wine enthusiasts—Louis Barruol, Rick Rainey, and Justin Boyette—this vineyard is a convergence of old-world wisdom and the unique terroir of the Finger Lakes. Their small-scale, artisanal approach to wine-making is reflected in their meticulously crafted wines that speak volumes of the region’s potential. The intimate and knowledgeable tastings here have fast become the stuff of legends in the Finger Lakes region, drawing wine aficionados from far and wide.

Forge Cellars is particularly known for its red wines, with their Pinot Noir and their classically styled Cabernet Franc leading the pack. Their Pinot Noir is truly a revelation—ethereal, elegant, and robust. Depending on the vintage, you might find an intriguing interplay of red berries, earthy undertones, and a hint of spice, all bound together by silky tannins and a lively acidity. The wine’s complexity is a testament to Forge Cellars’ commitment to honoring the inherent characteristics of the grape and the unique terroir of the region.

Similarly, their Cabernet Franc is a must-try. This varietal has been gaining popularity in the Finger Lakes, and Forge Cellars’ rendition is a shining example of why. Bursting with aromas of ripe raspberries, bell pepper, and a touch of tobacco, it leads to a palate that’s beautifully balanced, with ripe tannins and an enduring finish that leaves traces of cocoa and a hint of earthiness. It’s a wine that’s as evocative as it is enjoyable, encapsulating the essence of Forge Cellars and its stunning surroundings.

Hector Wine Co.

5610 NY-414, Hector, NY 14841

(607) 387-1045

You might begin noticing a theme here and a camaraderie among winemakers around Seneca Lake. Established in 2009, Hector Wine Company is a gem tucked away in the picturesque landscape of the Finger Lakes. Co-founded by Jason Hazlitt and Justin Boyette, two individuals with a shared passion for viticulture and the terroir of their homeland, this winery has become a beacon for those seeking genuinely expressive wines. Located on the eastern side of Seneca Lake, Hector Wine Company offers an array of wines that truly encapsulate the unique terroir of the region, with the tasting experience here being both educational and deeply enjoyable, in an environment that’s as welcoming as it is beautiful.

Hector Wine Company is particularly recognized for its red wines, with their Soul Red and Cabernet Franc capturing the hearts of many. The Soul Red, a blend of Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, and Cabernet Franc, presents an intriguing tapestry of flavors. Depending on the vintage, expect a bouquet of ripe red and black fruits, a touch of spice, and an undercurrent of earthiness, tied together with well-integrated tannins and a refreshing acidity. The Cabernet Franc is another standout, a testament to the grape’s growing popularity in the Finger Lakes region. The wine greets the nose with alluring aromas of ripe red berries, bell pepper, and a hint of tobacco, leading to a palate that’s beautifully balanced, with smooth tannins and a lingering finish hinting at a whisper of cocoa and a subtle earthiness.

Damiani Wine Cellars

4704 NY-414, Burdett, NY 14818

(607) 546-5557

Founded in 2007, Damiani Wine Cellars is the realization of a shared dream among its founders, Lou Damiani, Phil Davis, and Glenn Allen. Nestled on the eastern side of Seneca Lake, this winery represents the quintessence of Finger Lakes viticulture, having earned its place as a top-tier vineyard in the region. Damiani Wine Cellars has gained recognition for its dedication to crafting wines that express the unique characteristics of the Finger Lakes terroir, with a wine tasting experience that is as enriching as it is enjoyable, set against the picturesque backdrop of the lake’s serene beauty.

Renowned for their reds, Damiani Wine Cellars has an impressive roster that includes their signature Meritage and Cabernet Franc. The Meritage, a harmonious blend of Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, and Cabernet Franc, is a wine lover’s delight. Depending on the vintage, you might be treated to a symphony of flavors featuring ripe dark fruits, a hint of sweet spice, and a subtle earthy undertone, all supported by structured tannins and a balanced acidity. Equally captivating is their Cabernet Franc, which has rapidly gained popularity in the region. With its enticing aroma of ripe raspberries, bell pepper, and a touch of spice, it reveals a palate that is full-bodied yet elegantly balanced. The finish lingers, leaving a delightful trail of cocoa and a hint of toasted oak, a testament to the careful maturation process in the winery’s cellars.

I believe you missed the best red wine producer in the Finger Lakes, Shalestone, on the east side of Seneca Lake. Their slogan is “All We Do Is Reds” and I think, for example, they are way better than Shaw. They are small and don;t usually put their wines into tastings, but that does not detract from their quality. While all the wineries you mention surely have merit and make some fantastic wines, year-to-year my red collection gets replenished with Shalestone’s reds.

Hi Boyd, Yes! Shalestone does have great reds, and there are many other wineries on Seneca Lake that have fabulous red wines (Atwater, Damiani, Bloomer Creek, Flatt Rock, Forge, Red Newt). For this, I article I was sticking to the West side of Seneca Lake, trying to do a tour that people could easily accomplish in one day. My hope is to do another one focusing on the other side of the lake! Cheers!

Long Point Winery, on the East side of Cayuga Lake makes fantastic Red Wines (Zin, Cab, Merlot, PS, Sangio, Barbera, etc.) They source their grapes for those wines from California and craft them into some of the best Reds anywhere. I know…not really Finger Lakes Reds, but the classic Red Wine Grapes just won’t mature in the Finger Lakes. I’ve rarely had a Finger Lakes Red that I even wanted to drink! Until I went to Long Point.

Is Wiemer on the east side of senaca lake also?

The Wiemer tasting room and vineyard sites are located on the West Side of Seneca Lake.
