Swansea voters elect new faces on town's Board of Selectmen, School Committee

SWANSEA — The town elected Michael Beaudette to the Board of Selectmen on Monday.

Beaudette, a building industry manager with no previous experience in town government, received 1,070 votes, beating out Joyce Moore (963 votes), Mark Shane (959 votes) and Randy Lebeau (106 votes), according to unofficial results.

The town clerk’s office said 3,180 votes were cast; nine write-in ballots were cast, and 73 ballots were blank.

Beaudette is a fresh face on the board after selectman Christopher Carreiro opted not to run for re-election . Carreiro, who joined the board in 2015, has set his sights on the race for Bristol County Register of Deeds’ Fall River District.

In a forum for Swansea candidates on March 27, Beaudette said he has no government experience but has for decades helped homeowners and tradespeople. He said he voted in 2023 to reject a proposal to build a $53 million municipal complex in town, saying he would rather see Swansea invest in its existing properties.

He said he decided to run for office after hearing citizens wonder why good people don’t stand up and serve. “I am a good person, I have stood up, and I am willing to come in,” he said.

New face on Swansea School Committee

In the race for School Committee, voters re-elected longtime member James Carvalho and elected new member Ana Ponte-Porto.

Carvalho received 1,460 votes, with Ponte-Porto receiving 1,195.

In third place by a narrow margin was Joshua Harrington, who earned 1,154 votes, followed by Frank Baptista Jr., who earned 929 votes. In fifth place was incumbent Eric Graham, with 897 votes, who was ousted from the board. All vote totals are still unofficial.

At a forum for candidates, Carvalho cited decades of experience and dedication to Swansea with local sports leagues, the volunteer fire department, Park Commission, Board of Health and more. Ponte-Porto, an educator, said she wanted to see Swansea schools invest in more technology and focus on retention by increasing the school budget to offer students more services.
