JLC 2024-25 season offers adventurous musical mix

JLC audience

The James Lumber Center for the Performing Arts (JLC) at the College of Lake County loves to bring in performances from a wide range of genres, from Americana to world music. Everyone can find something they enjoy in the newly announced 2024-25 season.

“The best way to describe the upcoming season is fun,” said JLC Executive Director Alisa Baum. “We have an exciting mix of performances, featuring international stars, a local sensation, familiar beloved music and new artists that will captivate our audience.”

Leapfrogging through multiple musical genres of world music, the Brazilian-born percussionist and composer extraordinaire leads an innovative quartet, Chama, as they perform his infectious, fun album of the same name. Baptista is a regaled and sought-after collaborator, lending his genius touch and sonic curiosity to music by Paul Simon, Yo-Yo-Ma, Trey Anastasio, Sting and Herbie Hancock, among countless others. With hints of jazz, funk, flamenco and an array of Brazilian, Mexican and Afro-Cuban musical rhythms, this will be an exhilarating evening of dazzling music. Tickets are $25, or $23 for seniors 65+ and military and $12 for students.

CLC celebrates Latinx Heritage Month with a free concert featuring two regaled artists from South America. Singer/songwriter and preeminent protest music advocate Isabel Ramirez performs observational, reflective songs with socially conscious themes. La Sonora Mazuren performs a playful tapestry of tropical music sprinkled with electric guitar, vintage keyboards, accordion, Latin percussion and transcendent vocal harmonies. This engagement of La Muchacha is made possible in part through the Performing Arts Global Exchange program of Mid Atlantic Arts with support from the National Endowment for the Arts. Tickets are free, and reservations are requested.

Alligator recording artist and B.B. King Entertainer of the Year award-winner Castro leads the way on this blues odyssey, performing with his brilliant, raucous roadhouse band. Delivering authentic, traditional blues-rock seasoned with his soulful vocals, this show will surely rock the JLC stage. Chicago bluesman Nick Moss joins the musical mix, performing hammering blues layered with gospel, rockabilly and jam band elements. Tickets are $32, or $27 for seniors 65+ and military and $15 for students.

This legendary, multi-Grammy™-winning ensemble has broken racial barriers, sound-tracking the Civil Rights movement with a storied and stellar history of collaborating with artists as diverse as Mavis Staples, Peter Gabriel, Stevie Wonder, among many others. Their “jubilee singing” style is lively, combining traditional spirituals, lost classics, soul, blues and R&B to create a zesty mix of sublime and spirit-stirring music, spreading light and love everywhere they go. Tickets are $35, or $30 for seniors 65+ military and $15 for students.

Born into the bluegrass tradition, the McCoury brothers — Ronnie on mandolin and Rob on Banjo — are musical pilgrims and adventurers, both possessing knife-edge chops that reimagine the traditions, while cutting innovative pathways into southern music. A McCoury show is a “can’t-miss” event featuring some of the best musicians and singers from all genres, creating supercharged, sublime music that forges in all directions. From rock and bluegrass, contemporary and classic, to steel, R&B and jam band, this will be a feast for the ears. Tickets are $28, or $25 for seniors 65+ and Military and $15 for students.

In a Día de los Muertos (Day of the Dead) concert, this lively quintet adds their impassioned musicianship to a colorful festival of Mexican heritage, traditions and culture. Lake County News-Sun

Lake county news-sun | lake county communities come together for national night out; ‘the vibe’s really good’.

Clouds of soapy foam float in the wind from the nearby foam pit as the Highland Park Police Honor Guard makes its way to the opening ceremony. Highland Park’s sixth-annual event in front of City Hall featured games, activities, giveaways, demonstrations, live music from the group See Alice and a popular, foam cloud-producing inflatable attraction. The foam party pit, something never experienced by many, literally provided good clean fun.

Wind gusts during the event’s opening ceremony caused dramatic foam clouds to blow into the path of the Highland Park Police Honor Guard. Staffed by Detective Trevor Hansen and Officer Rob Larson, the honor guard walked to the front of City Hall to present the colors despite the foamy clouds floating by.

People with cameras snapped images of the fluffy clouds, as foam landed in glops of all sizes and stayed surprisingly intact on the lawn.

Aurora Solomon-Filer, 7, a rising second-grader from Highland Park, blew a kiss to her mother Cassandra while playing in the foam pit.

“I think it’s fantastic,” her mother said. “I would have probably been okay with a mud pit, too.”

Police Chief Louis E. Jogmen said, “This special event is a chance for police officers to get to know community members, and our community members to get to know our police team, share important information about public safety and build partnerships that make our community safer and more collaborative.”

Administrative Services Officer Jacqui White, who planned the event with executive assistant Leigh Delaney, also addressed the audience.

“We know that communities where police work and play alongside residents are safer communities, and the team at the Highland Park Police Department truly values that partnership,” White said. “Events like National Night Out are one way for us to reach out and thank you for welcoming our team into your lives.”

Highland Park Councilmember Barisa Meckler Bruckman also spoke to the audience and attended with family.

“Special events like National Night Out are among the best parts of living in Highland Park,” Meckler Bruckman said. “Seeing neighbors, non-profit organizations and our community’s first responders come together for this family event each year is a reminder that we all contribute to making our community more welcoming, more fun and, most importantly, safer.”

Besides the foam party pit, amenities included a bounce house, a drone display, touch-a-truck opportunities, cart rides and free shaved ice from a Kona Ice food truck.

“That’s always one of my favorite events to do … National Night Out,” Kona Ice event manager Alexis Passannante said. “I feel like it’s always just a fun event. The vibe’s really good.”

A foam covered Levi Ander, 9, a rising fourth-grader from Highland Park, has exited the foam party pit to check in with his mother Ellie Ander, a volunteer staffing a community table for BeSMARTforKids.org at National Night Out on Aug. 6, 2024 at Highland Park City Hall (1707 St. Johns Ave.). There was also a water dunk tank. Michael Bryant, who plays quarterback for the Highland Park High School Giants football team, volunteered for a dunk tank shift.

“It’s chilly, but the water is warm,” he said.

Community informational tables included BeSMARTforKids.org, staffed by volunteer and parent Ellie Ander of Highland Park. The Be SMART campaign was launched in 2015 to promote responsible gun ownership to prevent gun deaths among children, according to https://besmartforkids.org.

“Be SMART is a program that helps start the conversation around securing firearms in a home,” Ander said.

Kites Over Lake Michigan to fly for last time Aug. 31-Sept. 1 in Two Rivers

While it is often held at neshotah beach, the high level of lake michigan has left the beach with less space than kite-fliers need for their demonstrations..

TWO RIVERS – The beloved Kites Over Lake Michigan festival will have its last flight this year.

The Two Rivers City Council agenda includes an item that reads: "Announcement by Kites Over Lake Michigan - 2024 event will be the last KOLM."

The festival has been a colorful staple in the Manitowoc and Two Rivers summer event calendar. While it is often held at Neshotah Beach, the high level of Lake Michigan has left the beach with less space than kite-fliers need for their demonstrations.

This year's event will take place Aug. 31 to Sept. 1 at Two Rivers High School, 4519 Lincoln Ave. Food and non-alcoholic beverages will be sold at the concession stand by local nonprofit service clubs.
