Note that the Smittybilt XRC 9.5K Waterproof Winch Gen2’s limited 3-year warranty on electrical components is middling. It falls square in the mid-range for warranty length and coverage. For heavy-duty work and vehicle recovery, you'll probably want to look for a sturdier winch—and a sturdier warranty.

I’ve been riding and using ATVs for several decades now, and have been testing and writing about them for almost 20 years. I’ve used all of these ATV winches with the exception of the Badland. I’ve personally installed most of these winches, as well as a few more, and I have been on the receiving end of the bad times that come from when a winch fails. I am an admitted gearhead and love to get into the nuts and bolts of everything I am into, which includes ATVs and other power sports, including trucks, snowmobiles, boats and more, and I love to hunt and fish. My recommendations are based my own experience and that of colleagues in the industry to whom I reached out to discuss what went into the designs of these products.

Warn sets the standard by which all other electric winches are compared, and with good reason—they work, all the time. The company is always improving their products, and the AXON is their best ATV winch to date. This one is rated for 3,500 pounds, and there is a 4,500-pound model for bigger UTVs. It is completely reliable, too, making it an easy pick for the best ATV winch. I have the equivalent truck winch on my vehicle. When I’m going on a trip, I only select gear that’s reliable and essential for road tripping , and the Warn winch is part of that.

How good are Warm ATV winches? Most of the major ATV manufacturers use Warn Winches for the accessory packages and outfitted models they sell. I asked a rep from one of these manufacturers why that was, and his response was telling. “We chose the Warn Winch because the last thing we want is for someone to buy our machine with a winch from the factory, and have them need to bring the machine in for a warranty repair due to a failed winch. With a Warn, we don’t have to worry about that.”

Polaris set out to design a winch that integrates perfectly with their machines, and the Pro winch does that and more. These winches are really high quality and the Rapid Recovery function lets you spool the synthetic rope back in 5 times faster than in normal-use mode. You just need to be aware of the switches so you don’t try to use it in Rapid Recovery mode.

These are the easiest-mounting winches on the market. Polaris designed their ATVs to have a winch mounted, and the wiring is pre-done. The mounting hardware is also part of the design of the winch, so you can have it on the machine in 20 to 30 minutes.

Why It Made the Cut : There are several ATV winches in the $100 range, and this one is and always has been the best option. Superwinch is a big brand that has been at this a long time. Their winches are solid performers, and owners like them.

Superwinch is a major brand, too. Superwinch used to be the standard equipment winches for Can-Am, and the value packed into this package is hard to beat.

Why It Made the Cut : There are only a few ATV accessory companies known for making gear that will withstand hard-core elements, and SuperATV is one of them. This winch can handle anything from use on the farm or hunting property, all the way to extreme mud bogging.

You also get a synthetic rope with a rubber bump-stop and aluminum fairlead. 

Why It Made the Cut : While Kolpin makes Quick Mount Winch Kits for other machines, this is one of the best units you can get for Honda ATVs. It is a high-quality ATV winch that is pre-mounted and wired for a Honda, making installation much easier.

There are three reasons this ATV winch gets included. First, I have mounted winches to several Honda ATVs over the years, and the job isn’t easy or quick. This kit cuts that time by 3/4ths, and makes it much easier. Second, there is no guesswork into the cables and wiring, as it is all set to the perfect sizing. Third, Kolpin is owned by Polaris, so the overall quality is outstanding. How well do I like this particular ATV winch setup? I have it on my own Honda ATV. Kolpin makes a wide range of these kits, too, so it’s likely that there’s a model for your ATV, no matter the brand.

Best Harbor Freight: Badland ZXR 3500

Why It Made the Cut : Harbor Freight incorporated the elements of higher-priced ATV winches into their newer ZXR series from Badland. For recovery purposes, and some other uses, these are pretty good winches for the money.

All jokes aside, there are quality products available at Harbor Freight stores, and any serious off-roader on a budget knows that the Badland ATV winches are actually quite good for the money. Durability is a question mark simply because I haven’t had the opportunity to test these out yet, but owners of Badlands ATV winches give them very high marks. For most uses, you’ll never have an issue with Badland ATV winches. 

What to Consider When Choosing an ATV Winch

I’ve used most of the major-brand ATV winches on the market today, and they are not all created equal. I’m not, however, going to say “Buy this winch and this winch alone.” Not everyone has the same needs and budget for a winch. Here are some things to remember before making a purchase:

You can spend less than $100 on a winch, or you can jump to well over $500 and up depending upon what brand you buy. Is that cheaper winch from Harbor Freight going to be of the same quality as a top-of-the-line Warn ATV winch? No, it’s not. But depending upon how much you expect to use the winch and how much you want to spend on it, you might be able to save some money. 

You also need to consider how much use you plan to get from your ATV winch. I know this can be a bit tricky, because you won’t know exactly how much you’ll use the winch until you actually have one on your machine. Here’s something I learned from a mechanic when it came to this very topic: Make a list of every task you want to use a winch for, and then double it. 

There are some really high-use activities, such as snow plowing, when you’re constantly using the winch to raise and lower the plow blade, along with some relatively low-use activities, like recovering your machine when it’s stuck in mud or snow. If you’re only keeping the winch on your machine in the off-chance you may get stuck, that’s not a high-use activity. On the other hand, if you do a lot of mudding, or use your ATV to plow a lot of snow, you’re going to be using it a lot. I don’t often go mudding, but I have buried a machine more than once while working on spring food plots with an ATV using a  Ground Hog Max plow. If you use a winch often, or if you use it for activities that require you to pull a lot of weight, definitely go with a high-quality ATV winch.

Pulling Capacity

How big of a winch do you need? The pulling capacity of an ATV winch is set by how much weight the winch can pull with no resistance other than the weight itself—and that’s not just the weight of your ATV. I argued with this point with my neighbor when he wanted to add an ATV winch to his Polaris Sportsman. “The machine can’t weigh more than 600 pounds,” he said. “Why do I need to buy a 2,500-pound winch?” I told him that it’s not just the weight of the machine that comes into play here. If you’re stuck in mud, you also have to consider the weight of the mud, and the force of the mud’s suction against the machine. The same goes for snow. Plus you have to take gravity into account if an incline is involved. 

Here’s a basic guide to how much pulling capacity is adequate for various ATV types:

• 1,500 pounds – Acceptable for lighter ATVs such as sub-500cc machines, and two-wheel drive ATVs
• 2,500 pounds – Four-wheel drive ATVs
• 3,500 pounds – Four-wheel drive ATVs and smaller, two-seat UTVs
• 4,500 pounds and up – All UTVs

It is becoming more common for utility ATVs, like Polaris Sportsman models, to come with a 3,500-pound winch from the factory. This is a result of customer feedback, as more people realize that bigger can be better, and if the prices are close, it never hurts to get a bigger winch.

Cable Types

Winches come with either a synthetic rope or a steel cable, and there are pros and cons to each.

Synthetic Rope Pros:

• More flexible that steel
• Doesn’t fray, kink or rust
• Stronger than steel 
• Harder to break than steel

Synthetic Rope Cons:

• More expensive than steel
• Can knot (and once it does, you won’t be able to unknot it)
• Can freeze when wet
• Can slip on the spool if not anchored correctly

 Steel cable Pros:

• Is less expensive that synthetic rope
• Does not stretch
• Does not freeze

Steel Cable Cons:

• Can be hazardous if it breaks
• Kinks can cause jamming issues
• Can get tangled on the spool, lock up, and have to be cut off

Q: How big of a winch do I need for my ATV?

The old rule when picking how big of an ATV winch you need was that you went by multiplying the weight of your ATV by 1.5. However, most manufacturers are now going closer to doubling the weight of your machine as a minimum. Remember, the winch will only pull the rated weight when there is nothing acting against that weight, so think of it as a 1,500-pound winch pulling 1,500 pounds of weight with nothing acting against that weight. Since that is never the case, you need a winch that is capable of pulling more than the weight of the ATV.

Q: Who makes the best ATV winch?

The conversation of who makes the best ATV winch will always start and end with one brand name – Warn. Warn winches are simply the best because no one has been in the business of making the highest quality winches longer than Warn has. They are pricey, but they are also worth the cost due to longevity and quality.

Q: How can I increase the pulling capacity of my ATV winch?

There is really only one way to increase the capability of your winch, and that is with a snatch block. A snatch block is a pulley through which you run your winch line and run the hook end of your winch back to your machine. You then attach the snatch block to a stationary object, or to whatever you want to move with the ATV. By adding the pulley, you are effectively doubling your pulling capability. This is why it is always a good idea to have a tow strap and snatch block as part of your reliable off-roading gear . A 2,500-pound winch might not get you out of the mud, but 5,000 pounds of pulling capability might.

Q: Is a 2,500-pound winch enough for my ATV?

Yes, a 2,500-pound capacity winch should be plenty big enough for your ATV. That’s enough pulling capacity to cover any ATV currently on the market. Can you go bigger? Sure, and you can even go smaller, although I would not recommend going smaller than 1,500 pounds.

Q: How do I know what winches will fit my ATV?

Most ATV winches use a general mount, but most ATVs require a winch-mounting plate to attach the winch to the machine. Be sure to check what type of plate your specific ATV requires, and never wing it when it comes to mounting. That can cause damage to both the winch and the ATV.

An ATV winch is really a simple tool in that it pulls line back onto a spool using gearing that helps create pulling power. The differences between a bad ATV winch and the best ATV winches are small, but extremely important. It isn’t about the most power, or the highest cost. It is all about doing the job repeatedly and effectively every time you call upon the winch to do so. The winches on this list will do that.

I consider an ATV winch to be an important part of the machine, and I have one on every machine I own, with the exception of a go-fast sport machine that I kept from my youth. It may seem intimidating to add a winch to your ATV, but it is doable with a few tools, so time and modest mechanical ability. It is one of the most practical accessories you can add to your ATV.

It performs well in abrasive terrain and situations since it’s less prone to abrasion and fraying. With these upsides, you’d think it’s harder to maintain. On the contrary, it requires less maintenance than synthetic cables.

The winch comes with four-sided fairlead rollers complete with nylon bushings to provide a smoother experience. The four-sided fairlead roller allows the steel cable to come from either side without getting kinks or twists. However, we noted that it tends to get heavier on one side when the cable is coming from the side. As such, you might have to stop and reset the winch constantly. Alternatively, you can get your vehicle unstuck and re-spool it later.

A winch is a lifting device comprising a rope or chain around a rotating drum, which turns by crank or motor. No experience with either, but the Smittybilt claims to be IP67 waterproof and rated 500lbs more..that's the one I would go with out of those two.

I wouldn't touch a Smittybilt, they don't even stock many of the spare parts needed for them. Someone recently posted they had an issue with their 3-4 month old Smittybilt winch (I think it was a solenoid assembly) and Smittybilt couldn't provide the part he needed so they sent him a replacement winch. That sounds great until you think about what will happen once it is out of warranty. It's not good to buy a winch you can't get parts for later on. I wouldn't touch a Harbor Freight Tools winch either. I'm a 20 year Warn winch owner, you'll never have a parts or post-sales support issue with them.  

consider it safety equipment DONT go cheap for your budget you might try a QUALITY kinetic rope/ tow strap for starter recovery gear and build from there while you save for a warn  

Although I would never argue that Warn is not the best, I have a dozen or so pulls with my smitty 9500 with synthetic rope and its worked fine. It was either that or put off the winch for another year or so and it has allowed me to go places in that last year that I would not have gone otherwise. Maybe someday I will get a Warn but I think this has been a great starter winch.  

I wheel with people that have that have both the Smitty and the previous model HF. Both have been through their paces and have performed fine. The owners both swear by them. I however do not have a winch. But if gladly get pulled out by any one of them. When it comes time to get one, I'll also be choosing between these two. Have read good to great reviews on both. Though I will switch to synthetic. Sent from my SM-G935V using Tapatalk

fwiw: this is one area I wouldn't cheap out on. get a warn. (and I am notoriously cheap.)  

Warn is absolutely the winch to have but if you can’t afford $1100 for a 9000lb Warn. Then $225 for a 9000lb HF winch is a stop gap that is better than nothing until you get a Warn.  

I agree with Warn Jerry.  

Warn winch on my Jeep and also a warn on my Ram truck. But my thought on this topic is.... any winch is better than no winch, if at this time you can not afford a Warn buy one you can afford and use it until better times.  

NOBODY Likes RAMSEY???? I have a REP 8000 that I have had for over 30 years and it still works and has never not worked so long as I didn't do something bad to it.. I now have a Smitty 9500 on the front of my LJ that I have used for tree pulling(I haven't buried myself so recovery hasn't been an issue) mostly so I can clear a trail or direct the fall if cutting it down, and it has been a great winch. BUt the Ramsey has been bulletproof for over 30 years.  

Absolutely, Ramsey are practically bullit proof. I ran only Ramsey on my fleet of tow truck where the get a workout day in, day out and never had one fail. Must be the reason almost every tow truck runs Ramsey, least they did when I was in that business 20 years ago. My TJ has a Smittybuilt on it but I just bought the Jeep with it on it, other then making sure it works I haven't used it so can't comment on it. My work trailer has a Warn on it, hasn't been used much but let me down at a bad time the other day!  

My YJ has a Warn M8000 from the 80's and still working like a champ, My TJ has a Warn Zeon 8S. If I had a budget I would look for a used Warn before buying a SB Winch. There is no way I would trust my TJ being rescued by a HF $225.00 winch, really I paid more than that for my winch rope. Or this HF Winch Option  

I have said this at least a dozen times on forums or FB pages. Take it for what it is worth. I recently read an article that stated that all Chinese made winches are all basically made to the same standards, including the Chinese Warns. Having said that, I would say it is a coin toss between the 2, unless you can come up with a HF coupon. My jeep had a Badlands 12k on it when I bought it and it has worked fine for utility work around the ranch, I have never pulled myself or anyone else out with it. I was doing research because I wanted to upgrade, eventually. Considering the article I read, it is way down the list, coming after all other mods are done. When I upgrade it will be a Warn M8000 with synthetic rope.

So how many pulls, loads, whatever the quantification is, does it take on average to make a HF or Smittybilt fail. How many failures have you all had with these? I actually am curious to know as I have all four of the above mentioned winches and have never had a failure on any of them. Of course the Ramsey is the oldest and probably belongs in a museum :happyyes: Do we have any facts here or just good old opinions. Not that there is anything wrong with that LOL:  

not on vehicle winches but I've had 2 warns die on ATV's 1 cheap version (oem) one not cheap better aftermarket. seen a few other brands die too but mostly its never a motor problem its something to do with moisture 99% of the time on all of them.  

I pulled my Jeep over a mile last year snow wheeling with my smittybilt winch without issue I know it’s not a constant duty like all the good winches but it did work for me what was in essence constant duty. I simply don’t use my winch enough to spend good winch money on one.  

I have a Warn 9.5Ti and love the line speed that it delivers but when i found an engo 9k with synthetic line for a bit over $300 I couldnt pass it up for the wife.  

For what its worth, I had a HF winch on my JK. Worked twice the first year I had it on the jeep to pull out other jeeps. Next year I tried to pull myself out with it and the thing locked up / failed completely. My recently acquired TJ will be getting a Warn once the time comes.

More than 75 million years ago, the area now known as South Dakota's Badlands National Park was covered by a shallow sea and once it retreated and dried out, a wonderland of fossil-rich natural deposits was left behind. Each band of color, from the older layers at the bottom to the newer layers at the top, is indicative of a distinctive time period, carved out by water and hardened into sedimentary rock over time. If you visit Badland’s National Park , you can see nature at work—albeit slowly—as the landscape is still changing thanks to erosion.

South Dakota’s otherworldly Badlands are home to not only flummoxing erosional formations, hoodoos, and buttes but also fossil beds that are important to paleontological research. Ancient horses and rhinos previously romped around throughout this rough landscape and archaeological finds suggest that the Badlands were once used as a seasonal hunting ground for native populations. Bison slaughtering locations have been discovered as well as charcoal fragments, pottery, and worked stone remnants.

However, if you’re scared of heights, you’ll want to avoid this 1.5 mile-long trail, because there are many steep cliffs.
• Castle Trail: At 10 miles long, this is the lengthiest trail in the park, beginning at the Door and Window parking lot and stretching 5 miles one-way to the Fossil Exhibit Trail.
• Medicine Root Loop: For a moderate 4 miles long trail, explore Medicine Root Loop, which connects with the Castle Trail. You’ll see the expansive mixed-grass prairie.
• Fossil Exhibit Trail: Families love this short quarter-mile trail that is fully accessible because it showcases fossil replicas and has exhibits of the animals that once lived in the area.

While flora is sparse, the park has wild mixed-grass prairies on its 244,000 acres that nurture bison, bighorn sheep, prairie dogs, and the elusive black-footed ferrets. At nearly 2,000 pounds, bison are an impressive sight to behold, and the park is home to about 1,200 tatanka , the Lakota word for the animal. In the summer, male bison knock heads, breed, and challenge each other for mating rights. In the spring, these creatures shed their heavy coats by rolling in the dirt, which helps the ecosystem by rotating the soil so that vegetation can grow. Keep a safe distance from bison as they are wild and dangerous—never approach them.

Large bighorn sheep can be found in the Badlands. Bighorn will eat grasses and shrubs before heading to higher ground in the cliffs and bluffs. With binoculars in hand, try to spot the herd as they try to blend into the rock, at Pinnacles Overlook and in the Cedar pass areas of Castle Trail and Big Badlands Overlook.

While bighorns and bison are imposing and regal, prairie dogs are adorable and scrappy. You’ll often see them pop out of their burrows and scurry across the dirt, before escaping to their underground colony. Although you can buy peanuts at some locations to feed them, the National Park Service asks that you refrain from doing so as they have sensitive stomachs and have been known to bite humans.

Black-footed ferrets, an endangered species, live underground and they are nocturnal and elusive, so it isn’t likely that you’ll spot them. They eat prairie dogs and move into their abandoned homes and do their best to stay away from predators like golden eagles, coyotes, snakes, owls, badgers, and bobcats.

Considerably less cute than the prairie dogs and ferrets, the prairie rattlesnake , which can stretch up to 5 feet long, is South Dakota’s only venomous snake. Along the trails, you'll notice numerous signs warning you of rattlesnakes accompanied with a photograph so you'll remember what to look for. The snakes typically seek shade under the boardwalks and in tall grasses, so you should never step or put your hand down anywhere that you cannot see, like a shadowy rock crevice.

You can drive through the park along many of the scenic routes to get a quick overview. When driving through the park, beware that wildlife is common, so you'll need to drive slowly and always keep at least a hundred feet of distance. When taking photos, visitors are required to pull over so as not to slow down traffic. Roads can be dangerous in rainy, snowy, and icy conditions so check the weather forecast before you go and make sure you have the right kind of car for the drive you plan to do.

• Badlands Loop Road : It takes about one hour to drive this 39-mile loop that follows Highway 240 between the towns of Wall and Cactus Flat. Along this route, you'll pass numerous overlooks and Panorama Point, with a few picnic areas along the way, as well as the Ben Reifel Visitors Center. This is the best way to see the northern part of the park and the road is appropriate for all cars but does have some steep sections where speed limits are reduced.
• South Unit : Driving around the South Unit is a great way to take in the park’s diverse landscapes from the safety and comfort of your own vehicle. It’s a seamless route, without any other roads intersecting, where you can spot wildlife, marvel at Red Shirt Table Overlook, take photographs at designated pull-outs, and stop in the White River Visitor Center . The whole drive takes about one hour, going one-way, making it an easy chunk to bite off.
• Sage Creek Rim Road : The best chance to see the bison herd will be on this road and you can also see Hay Butte Overlook, Badlands Wilderness Overlook, Roberts Prairie Dog Town, and Sage Creek Basin Overlook. The whole experience will take you about two hours—more if you stop to photograph wildlife. The dirt and gravel road connects Highway 44 to the Badlands Loop (Highway 240). After heavy rain or snow, the road may be closed.

There are two campgrounds within the park: Cedar Pass Campgrounds and Sage Creek Campgrounds. Both are beautifully positioned sites perfect for stargazing and enjoying a night or two in the fresh air of the park. Due to fire hazards, campfires are not permitted and visitors are not allowed to gather firewood at either location. There are also campsites located outside the park, where guests can enjoy more amenities not available in the park.

• Cedar Pass Campgrounds: This is the larger site that offers electrical hook-ups for RVs, as well as showers and toilets. There are 96 campsites here and it is located closest to the Ben Reifel Visitors Center. This campground is open year-round, but there is a 14-day limit on stays. The Cedar Pass Campground Amphitheater sets the stage for star revelry like no other. Rangers will lead an informative talk, pointing out constellations and planets in the night sky, and then offer telescopes for pointed viewing.
• Sage Creek Campgrounds: The 22 campsites here are free to use, but they are only available on a first-come-first-serve basis. The campground is located at the end of an unpaved road, which is prone to closure during and after winter storms or spring downpours. Motor homes and RVs larger than 18 feet are not allowed. There are pit toilets and picnic tables, but you won't find any running water here.
• Badlands Interior Campground : Only a mile from the park entrance, this privately-owned site offers 45 to 100-feet long RV sites with full electric hook-up and regular campsites as well. The benefit of staying outside the park is the number of amenities, which include a restaurant, swimming pool, and fire pits.

The closest towns to the park are Interior and Wall, while the closest large city, Rapid City , is approximately 76 miles away. If you do not want to camp or can't get a cabin at the Cedar Pass Lodge, there are many motels and hotels you can stay at nearby. You'll find outposts of standard American hotel chains like Best Western, Super 8, and the Days Inn, as well as independently-owned hotels.

• Cedar Pass Lodge : Located within the park next to the campground, the lodge has modern eco-friendly cabins which were built to resemble the original cabins of 1928, but with modern amenities.
• Frontier Cabins : This motel offers 33 custom-built log cabins with private bathrooms and daily housekeeping. It's located in Wall, 6 miles from the park entrance and two blocks away from local restaurants.
• Badlands Inn : Rooms in this two-story motel in Interior, a mile away from the Ben Reifel Vistors Center, have hardwood floors, flatscreen TVs, and every room has a view of the park.
• Hotel Alex Johnson : If you are looking for more upscale accommodation, you will be hard-pressed to find a hotel near the park, but you can stay at this luxury Hilton property in Rapid City if you don't mind the hour drive to the park entrance.
• Sunshine Inn Motel : This low-cost and family-owned motel in Wall is 7 miles from the park entrance and has basic AAA-approved rooms.

If you are traveling to South Dakota from another state, you will want to fly into Rapid City, which has the closest airport to Badlands National Park. From there, you can drive to one of the two visitor centers: Ben Reifel or White River. The Ben Reifel Visitor Center is located on the north end of the park and is much larger and has a better location to find nearby accommodation, while the White River Visitor Center is located on the south end of the park and is much smaller.

From Rapid City, you can travel southeast via either I-90 toward Wall or Route 44 toward Interior to reach the Ben Reifel Visitor Center. Or, you could travel south via Routes 79 and 40 to reach the White River Visitor Center near the town of Porcupine.

Both the Ben Reifel and White River Visitor Center are accessible to wheelchair users with ramped entrances, accessible restrooms, and reserved parking spaces. There is also a tactile experience at the Ben Reifel Visitor Center where you can touch and hold fossils and rocks from the parks, and the introductory film is captioned for visitors with hearing impairments.

Accessible hikes include the Window and Door Trail, which are just a short drive away from the Ben Reifel Visitors Center but can also be reached from the parking lot. These trails have level boardwalks that lead to great viewpoints and are both less than a mile in length. The Fossil Exhibit Trail, which can be reached from the White River Valley Overlook, has accessible parking and a quarter-mile boardwalk that takes you past fossil specimens. The Bigfoot Pass Picnic Area has parking, ramps, and an accessible toilet.

There are two wheelchair-accessible sites at the Cedar Pass Campground, but they are only available on a first-come, first-served basis. Campgrounds have level sites that are possible for wheelchair users to navigate, and accessible bathrooms. If attending a program at the campground's amphitheater, you'll find that it has a paved and well-lit path that's easy to reach from the reserved parking spaces. However, ranger-led hikes take place on rough terrain and are not accessible.

• Cell service in the park can be spotty, so pick up a map when you arrive in case you get lost and lose service.
• There is no water for human consumption available in the park, so you'll need to bring enough water for your outing into the park because you will not come across any natural water source.
• Star seekers should visit during the annual Badlands Astronomy Festival , a three-day celebration with astronomers, educators, and space scientists.
• Consider venturing 43 miles east to experience  1880 Town , where you can see  Dances with Wolves  movie props alongside a giant herd of Texas Longhorns and 30 buildings from the late 19th and early 20th centuries.
