Bebe Rexha breaks out on Warped Tour

The Vans Warped Tour is often described as “punk rock summer camp,” but Bebe Rexha describes it more like boot camp.

“It’s tough,” says the Brooklyn-born pop singer, who performs in the Warped Tour when it visits the Palace of Auburn Hills on Friday. “You kind of just have to go into survival mode.”

Rexha describes mile-long walks between her stage and her artist booth, few opportunities to exercise, cold showers, stage times that fluctuate from day to day and a grueling, unrelenting tour schedule with few days off.

But the up-and-comer says it’s an invaluable learning experience and an important launch pad, and it’s teaching her to become a more well-rounded artist.

“You learn how to work with the crowd, you learn yourself, you learn your art more and you just become a better performer,” says Rexha, 25. “I don’t think you can really prepare for this, you just have to do it and then learn along the way.”

Rexha has been picking up things along the way since breaking through as a writer of Eminem and Rihanna’s smash hit “The Monster” and as a co-writer and singer on “Hey Mama,” David Guetta’s current hit that features Nicki Minaj.

Those hits have helped jumpstart her burgeoning solo career. Rexha’s EDM ballad “I Can’t Stop Drinking About You” has been played 18 million times on Spotify, and her breakout song “I’m Gonna Show You Crazy” has racked up 42 million plays on the streaming service.

Rexha’s brash, in-your-face persona is partially a reaction to her conservative upbringing. Rexha was raised in New York by first generation Albanian immigrant parents who did their best to shelter her from the outside world.

“When I was younger, I wasn’t really allowed to go out. My parents would never let me go to Warped Tour,” says Rexha, on the phone last week from a Warped stop in New York. “They were very protective of me. They wanted to live in their cute little house and be comfortable, and that kind of drove me insane.”

Rexha says she suffered a mental breakdown in her late teens, spending the better part of two years of her life locked inside her room, crying, depressed and angry at herself.

She poured herself into her music, spending as much as 16 hours a day writing and recording. “I’m Gonna Show You Crazy” — a confrontation with and an acceptance of the demons in her head — was a breakthrough moment for her.

“For a really long time I ran after what I thought people wanted, and that was the first song that I wrote that was for my own therapy,” she says. “It was a message to myself. Like, what am I so scared of? What are we all so scared of? A lot of times we hold ourselves back. That song was a reflection on that time in my life.”

Rexha, who fronted Pete Wentz’s short-lived band Black Cards, is now working on shaping her debut album. After the Warped Tour wraps next month, she’s got a few weeks to hit the studio before heading out on the road with Nick Jonas for a run of dates in September and October.

“With my album, I’m learning the only person that really has your back is you, and the only constant in my life has been music,” says Rexha, who counts Lauryn Hill, Bob Marley and Tracy Chapman as influences. “And this album, I’m learning so much about turning into a woman while still being a kid, really.”

Rexha says she has a surplus of songs for the album; the difficult part will be narrowing them down. “There’re just too many songs!” she says.

“I’m saying everything I want to say, I just don’t know what to put on the album. To me, it’s like, what do I put out first?” she says. “I’m just living my life and writing songs. Honestly, I just want to say what I feel and perform and change lives.”

Bebe Rexha Admits She Was "Super Worried" to Join Warped Tour

Since her days performing with Black Cards and penning hits for stars like  Rihanna ,  Bebe Rexha has carved a name for herself in the pop world. She nabbed a Billboard Hot 100 single as featured artist on  David Guetta 's  "Hey Mama" and dropped her debut solo EP earlier this year. Now, the 25-year-old Brooklyn native has taken her talents around the country via two very different tours.

Rexha recently hit the road for  Warped Tour 2015 and revealed on  Got Ur #   that she wasn't always confident about joining the legendary festival.

"I was super worried when I started doing Warped Tour because it's like all these punk rock kids, and here I come, this pop chick...I think when people see me live, they're actually pleasantly surprised because I kind of 'rockify' all the songs, and it's not just this corny pop thing," she said. "I have an actual band, and we actually rock out on stage. I think that's what makes sense with Warped Tour. It's real music."

Interview | bebe rexha at warped tour.

BY LEE ANN JAENICKE

Whoever thinks Warped Tour is just a punk rock / emo festival clearly didn’t check the incredibly loaded line-up this year. One of the stand-out exceptions is the talented pop singer Bebe Rexha. We’re please to present a rare interview with the EDM songstress, who’s on her first Warped Tour.

Bebe Rexha cropped

So Bebe, you already did your set around noon. How are the first two days at Warped Tour for you?

Bebe Rexha: I like having my set around midday. That allows you to sleep in a little bit, since it’s hard get some sleep on a moving bus. The great thing of performing early is you get your set done and then have time to hang with your fans and still have time to check out other bands.

While you were growing up, your parents were very strict. How is it being out here on Warped Tour with a pretty wild crowd?

Rexha: My parents are concerned about my safety but they’re also very excited to see me live my dream. To be at Warped Tour is the ultimate grime. If you love what you are doing, if you love music, you do Warped Tour. That’s an important step to really flourishing.

This Tour is dominated by a lot of heavy bands. Playing pop and EDM infused music, you’re one of the exceptions to the line-up. How does that feel to stand out like that?

Rexha: I was intimidated at first. The way I’m feeling my anxieties is pretty much like everyone else. But I grew up with a lot of pop and dance music, so that is how I express myself. You can take my lyrics and put them to a rock beat and play some rock music. It’s all about how you package it. But I’m happy to be a little different because the fans love it, no matter what. This is the true me. I’m not trying to be fake — a fake rocker or a fake punk or screamo. I’m just being Bebe and if people love me for that, that’s the best you can do. And it’s the most important thing for me.

You worked with some big names in the industry like David Guetta and Pete Wentz. Which artists would you like to work with in the future?

Rexha: After the Warped Tour I’m touring with Nick Jonas. We talked about making a song together soon. He’s very talented and I’m very excited to work with him. He is a great writer and guitar player.

You’ve had so much success writing songs for others, like “Monster” by Eminem and Rihanna. How does it feel to be breaking through as an artist yourself now?

Rexha: When you write songs you can make a lot of money. But all the money in the world can’t buy the feeling that you get when you’re on stage and just 20 kids know every word of your song and sing along. I’d rather be broke and travel the country, just making enough money to survive. That’s what I’m doing right now. I’m actually making no money of this tour because I put everything I earn back into my music, my merch and my band. This is just about seeing my fans and grow the fanbase.

“I Can’t Stop Drinking About You” is a very catchy and dance-y song. What does a night out look like in the life of Bebe Rexha?

Rexha: The honest truth, it’s pretty boring. Right now I’m partying a lot harder but I usually don’t really like to go out. When I drink I get very happy for a while and then turn really insightful and deep. A night out with me is weird.

I’d rather have my friends come over. I get invited to a lot of celebrity parties but I rarely go. Showing off on red carpets is not for me. Of course it’s part of my job to make appearances, but parties are the least favorite part for me. Unless I’m doing a show, write a new song or do something exciting for my career. I love working and I love seeing my fans. Those are the things I really appreciate and look forward to.

Back to Warped Tour. Which bands are you excited to see this year?

I think that Mod Sun is cool. I’m really looking forward to check out Riff Raff. I like that Warped Tour is integrating Rap and even some Soul lately. Music is changing and it’s becoming genreless. I also want to check out Pierce The Veil and Black Veil Brides. I want to experience their music style and see the energy on stage. I was also really impressed by Night Riots. Their set is right before mine and I thought they were amazing. I’m really looking forward to see one of the new young bands with maybe 100 followers. It’s still early in the tour. There is still a lot to come. I’m excited!

Singer Rexha brings ‘genre-less’ vibe to Vans Warped Tour on Fourth

July 2, 2015 By Palm Beach Arts Paper Leave a Comment

By Hilary Saunders

It’s hard to believe, but this summer marks the 20 th anniversary of Vans Warped Tour as a cultural institution for teens across America.

Founded in 1995 by Kevin Lyman of Vans in conjunction with the Creative Artists Agency, the skate shoe company has sponsored the festival since 1996. And over the past two decades, seemingly every punk/pop punk/emo/scremo/ska/hardcore band that could hold its weight in pyramid studs and Hot Topic shirts has played Warp.

It’s become a rite of passage, not just for the teens who make the pilgrimage year after year, but also for groups in those genres that aspire to a career in music.

The Warped Tour began in the mid-90s, as grunge crashed and burned and Slacker Nation, composed of Gen X youths, arose in its wake. The traveling summer festival hatched a remarkable plan — a fest financially and thematically geared at young concertgoers that united up to 100 artists playing on permanent amphitheater and makeshift parking lot stages, in different cities each night between June and August.

In the early years, hardcore heavyweights such as the Deftones performed alongside (and sometimes, at the same time as) nu metal groups like Limp Bizkit and ska-punks like Less Than Jake, NOFX. Even now-household names like Sublime, No Doubt, and Beck played Warp back then.

In the 2000s, when emo ruled all, the Warped Tour assumed a stance that aligned with the trendy anti-pop sentiment of the time. Bands like the theatrical alternative quintet My Chemical Romance and pop punks Simple Plan who had MTV and VH1 cred offered a new source of soul-searching and entertainment for the kids disenfranchised with the boy bands of the day.

But lately, the Warped Tour has begun including more EDM and pop acts. Whereas a few years ago, bands appearing at the West Palm Beach date of the Warped Tour such as metal group August Burns Red, rockers Matchbook Romance, and hardcore act Senses Fail would have been the newbies, they new serve as the reigning experienced tour champs. This year, the burgeoning artists come from different genres; electronic duo Black Boots and spoken word artist Jake Ducey join budding pop stars such as Bebe Rexha on the Warped Tour rolling through South Florida on Saturday.

Rexha, a Brooklyn-born pop singer of Albanian descent, released her debut EP I Don’t Wanna Grow Up on Warner Brothers Records this May, but her voice and her songwriting can be heard in many other places. She sings the chorus on David Guetta’s smash “Hey Mama” (although she doesn’t receive credit for it) and has written for projects by Usher and Pitbull. She even served as the former frontwoman for Pet Wentz’s post-Fall Out Boy band Black Cards. (Of course, Fall Out Boy played perfect Warped Tour material, performing in both 2004 and 2005.)

Additionally, Rexha grew up in a household listening to Albanian music and opera. She’s opened for bands ranging from Bon Jovi to Panic! At the Disco, but cites acts as diverse as The Weeknd, Purity Ring, Erik Hassle, Craig David, and Coldplay as music she enjoys listening to these days.

So with all these diverse, and mostly pop influences, Rexha may seem like a strange addition to the tour borne out of punk and hardcore. But, she says in an email from the road, “I consider my music genre-less.”

And when placed within the Warped Tour’s context of affordable, accessible rebellion, Rexha’s participation actually makes perfect sense. Rexha, whose given appellation Bleta translates to “bumblebee” in Albanian, started going by Bebe in high school. In her newest video for lead single “I’m Gonna Show You Crazy,” the young singer presents herself in a repressive boarding school, as if she were back in high school. She leads the other self-proclaimed freaks in a coup against the tyrannical, conformist headmistress, fearlessly dropping f-bombs like Warped Tour vets and political punks Anti-Flag.

“I think as woman we get classified as ‘the crazy ones’ sometimes, and I believe in owning who you are,” she says about the song. “Being strong and accepting your flaws is powerful. I wrote it as an acceptance song to myself.”

The anthemic nature of “I’m Gonna Show You Crazy” fits so snugly with the Warped aesthetic. Its repetitive directive, “I’m gonna show you, I’m gonna show you” will draw listeners from across the amphitheater, and get stuck in their heads for the rest of the 10-hour festival.

But more importantly, Rexha’s ferocity and stomping in high heels will likely impress the apathetic and the punks drawn in by Warp’s reputation and brand lure. Her individuality and freedom of expression encapsulates the tour’s most cherished values.

“I always remain true to myself. And I truly just love music. So as long as I do what I love and say what I wanna say, I never have to worry about maintaining my identity,” she says.

“I’m just excited to connect with my fans on Warp and make new fans and friends!”

The Vans Warped Tour and Bebe Rexha appear at The Coral Sky Amphitheatre in West Palm Beach on Saturday. Tickets cost $38.50; visit vanswarpedtour.com.
