Welcome to Visit Stellenbosch

Welcome to Visit Stellenbosch – the complete tourist information, travel and destination guide to the magnificent wine and food town of Stellenbosch – also known as the Gourmet Capital of South Africa. Stellenbosch is one of the most beautiful wine regions in the world and stands out as the premier wine and food region of South Africa. Not only is Stellenbosch a modern, thriving town – it is also the second oldest town in South Africa after Cape Town and is steeped in history. No visit to South Africa should be complete without a visit to this breathtaking town. Tourism, wine and food plays a leading and vital role in the history and future of Stellenbosch although there is a lot more to this lovely region than what meets the eye. Visit Stellenbosch has been created to offer practical and up to date tourist information for visitors to Stellenbosch and the surrounding winelands of the Western Cape. We will also provide articles related to travel and tourism in the Stellenbosch region. Stellenbosch is surrounded by beautiful mountains and vineyards which offer magnificent views throughout the year. It is here in Stellenbosch where you will find world-class cuisine, mouth-watering wines, friendly people and impeccable service – everything you need to make your Stellenbosch memories last forever. The centre of Stellenbosch is where everything happens. The area around Church, Andringa and Dorp Street are the tourist hub of Stellenbosch. In this area you will find great restaurants, wine bars, curio shops, coffee shops and art galleries that are all open until late at night. Stellenbosch is also very well known for its University and the students (some 30 000 of them) add to the lively vibe of this thriving town. Stellenbosch is a place where outsiders are welcomed and soon feel at home. This is a town where 4 nights won’t be enough to truly experience the region.

The off-season months (May to September) is often the best time of the year to visit Stellenbosch. Th weather is mild, it is less crowded and accommodation is on average 20% to 40% cheaper than in high season – this also holds true to the rest of South Africa. You will find that many of the Stellenbosch restaurants offer great specials during this time and sometimes offer fun, themed evenings. The wine estates of Stellenbosch have their fireplaces lit, bring out special vintages to taste and are less crowded. During the summer or high season months (October to April) we can recommend that you book your accommodation, tours and restaurants well in advance as Stellenbosch is one of the most visited town in South Africa and is often booked out months ahead of time. It happens very often that restaurants and day tour companies are booked out for weeks on end with no last minute availability.

A Short History on Stellenbosch Stellenbosch was founded in 1679 by the Governor of the Cape Colony, Simon van der Stel, who named the town after himself. Stellenbosch means “(Van Der) Stel’s Bush”. This beautiful village is situated on the banks of the Eerste River (First River), so named as it was the first new river he reached and followed when he went on an expedition over the Cape Flats to explore the territories towards what is now known as Stellenbosch. The town grew so quickly that it became an important local authority in 1682 and the seat of a magistrate with jurisdiction over 25 000sq km’s in 1685. The Dutch were skilled in hydraulic engineering and they devised a system of furrows to divert water from the Eerste River in the vicinity of Thibault Street through the town along Van Riebeeck Street to Mill Street where a mill was erected. During 1690 some Huguenot refugees visited and settled in Stellenbosch, grapes were planted in the fertile valleys around Stellenbosch and soon it became the centre of the South African Wine Industry. In 1710 a fire destroyed most of Stellenbosch, including the first church, all the Company property and twelve houses. Only two or three houses were left standing. When the church was rebuilt in 1723 it was located on what was then the outskirts of the town, to prevent any similar incident from destroying it again. This church was enlarged a number of times since 1723 and is currently known as the “Moederkerk” – Mother Church. Driving through historic Dorp Street you will notice many buildings in typical Cape Dutch architecture with thatched roofs. Stellenbosch also has thousands of oak trees lining the streets. Festivals and Events in the Stellenbosch Region When you visit Stellenbosch there is always something for everyone. Stellenbosch (much like the Dutch and the French) have a rich history of festivals and events. These events really do make Stellenbosch a year round tourist destination and both local as well as foreign visitors enjoy every moment that they spend in this lovely village. Some of the festivals and events in and around Stellenbosch include:

• Various Farmer’s Markets - especially over weekends. • Various Harvest Festivals on wine estates during harvest season. • Stellenbosch Craft Beer Festival. • Biltong and Pinotage Festival. • South African Cheese Festival. • Stellenbosch Wine Festival. • Woordfees • The Winelands Bridal Fair • Stellenbosch Street Soirees • Root 44 Park Run • Slow Market Stellenbosch • Spring Trail Run • ABSA Cape Epic • Die Burger / Sanlam Cycle Tour Weddings and Conferences in Stellenbosch Stellenbosch have been the ideal romantic wedding setting for as long as we care to remember and is today one of South Africa’s premier wedding destinations. Anyone who got married here will tell you that the beautiful and serene Stellenbosch Valley is the perfect place to start your life-long journey together. The romantic scenery of Stellenbosch adds to a wedding’s ambience and ensures that you never to be forgotten day is just so much more special. With numerous wedding venues to choose from you’re bound to find somewhere beautiful, but we warned: during high season (September to April) there ae between 150 to 350 weddings per month with venues in and around Stellenbosch booked and confirmed up to 2 years in advance. If you have guests that requires accommodation you will be better off also booking this in advance as Stellenbosch is an extremely popular tourist destination and almost all tourists to South Africa will visit Stellenbosch at some point. If you require assistance with finding suitable and available accommodation you are welcome to email us at [email protected] and our friendly team will gladly assist you. For our corporate guests, Stellenbosch offers some world-class conference venues and often offer special rates during the off-season period (May to September). Many corporate clients prefer to visit Stellenbosch for their conference or team building as it is a great place “to just get away from it all”. Cape Town is only 40 minutes away by car, so it is ideal to come and do some work in Stellenbosch and then relax at your hotel / guest house in the evening while enjoying stunning views and sipping on some of the award-winning wines that Stellenbosch is known for. Accommodation in Stellenbosch The accommodation in Stellenbosch includes hotel accommodation, accommodation in guest houses, bed and breakfasts and self-catering accommodation including holiday houses, luxury apartments, suites, villas and country cottages on wine estates. Stellenbosch is ideal for holiday and business travellers alike. Most of the hotel and guest house accommodation in Stellenbosch is close to the historic town centre or close to the University of Stellenbosch Campus. Almost all accommodation in Stellenbosch offers free Wi-Fi. Day Tours from Stellenbosch Stellenbosch is ideally situated to take various interesting guided tours as well as non-guided services. With Stellenbosch being right in the heart of the Cape Winelands we would advise to drink responsibly and rather take a driver or guided wine tour as opposed to drinking and driving. There are so many wine tour options to choose from, but, to name but a few, the most popular options include the Mystery Tour, The Gourmet Delights Tour, The MCC (Champagne) Tour as well as the Chocolate, Cheese, Olive and Wine Tour. At night we recommend that you make use of a shuttle service to take you to restaurants. The Stellenbosch wines are delicious and it is better not to drink and drive during the day or the evening as there are roadblocks daily. Top Tip: Wine Tours are a lot more affordable if you do it from the winelands vs doing it from Cape Town. Restaurants in Stellenbosch Stellenbosch is known as the Gourmet Capital of South Africa and for good reason. Some of the best restaurants in South Africa can be found right here in Stellenbosch. Representing some of the best in local and international cuisine, Stellenbosch offers a wide selection of restaurants to suit every palate, budget or mood. We would suggest that you book your table well in advance to avoid disappointment. We trust that you will visit Stellenbosch in the very near future to experience all the hidden gems of the region.

Stellenbosch History

The Stellenbosch Wine Route is arguably the country’s most famous, and the Stellenbosch Wine of Origin area includes 106 cellars – most of which are open to the public. Enjoy a long day’s wine tasting, and wine buying and you’ll get to experience some of the best views in the Western Cape.

The heart of the town lies somewhere near the oak-lined Dorp Street. With its venerable old buildings, this is the University’s main thoroughfare, where modern student life sits comfortably side by side with our history and architectural heritage.

The University – Maties – has produced many of the country’s great sporting heroes, including more than 155 rugby Springboks, and Stellenbosch offers almost every outdoor activity you could desire – from world-class sports facilities (rugby, cricket and soccer are national passions) to popular mountain bike routes and six truly great golf courses.

Several Hiking trails within the Jonkershoek Nature Reserve tempt the hiker: they range from an easy 5,3 km scenic walk to the challenging 17.1 km Panorama Trail and the 18 km Swartboskloof Trail. Visit Granny’s Forest at Helderberg Farm for easy walking – they also offer various other trails and an overnight hut. The full-day Vineyard Hiking Trail is best enjoyed in autumn or spring; it’s 24 km long that starts on the slopes of the Papegaaiberg, above the Oude Libertas Centre and meanders through the forest plantations, vineyards, olive groves and coastal renosterveld.

An important cultural centre, Stellenbosch has many galleries and museums housing important national and international art collections and the Stellenbosch Conservatoire is the country’s oldest music school.

Its historical parts display colonial Dutch architecture.

tourist information stellenbosch

Stellenbosch (founded in 1679) is about 50 km east of Cape Town and is the second oldest town in South Africa. It was named (like Simon's Town ) after the former Governor Simon van der Stel. The town is situated on the banks of the Eerste River ('First River') and has some fine examples of Cape Dutch architecture. It is also known as 'Eikestad' ('Oak City') because of its oak tree lined streets. Wines from the Stellenbosch region are known internationally and rank among the best in the world. Stellenbosch is also home to one of the country's oldest established universities with over 25,000 students. There is a bustling night life during the university term-time, with many night clubs catering for young people.

A van service runs from hostels in Cape Town to Stellenbosch for about R120/pp, depending on how many passengers there are (just one and it's R200). The main bus companies also go to Stellenbosch.

MetroRail [ dead link ] operates a regular train service to Stellenbosch from Cape Town via Bellville. Check the schedule, as trains do not run very often. It is also advisable to travel in groups and avoid busy travel times in the morning and evening on weekdays.

Stellenbosch has its own airfield but the nearest international airport is near Cape Town . Cape Town International airport is about 35 minutes away by car and airport shuttle service is available. Most hotels and guest houses will arrange transfers on request: expect to pay R400-500 for up to four people.

Stellenbosch lies approximately 60km from Cape Town. Drive on either the N1 or N2 highway. If on the N1, exit at the R304 towards Stellenbosch. If on the N2, exit at the R310 (Baden Powell Drive) and follow the signs. The N1 is generally considered to be the safer route, particularly at night.

Map

Stellenbosch is small enough that the entire city centre can easily be covered on foot. The Tourism Bureau also has a few cycles to rent. A curiosity is that there are no street signs. If you look closely you will see that the street names are indicated in yellow (in Afrikaans) on the edge of the sidewalks.

Stellenbosch is not safe at night, do not walk around, get an uber as you will get mugged. There is no need to take taxis for safety - although if you want to eat (and drink) at one of the outlying wine estates, you'll have to.

There are many companies and individuals offering organised and customised tours - or more simply and cheaply, you can take the Vine Hopper minibus which picks up anywhere in central Stellenbosch and takes circular routes around 12 local vineyards (6 each on alternate days). Get off the bus where you want, stay as long as you want, and get on a later bus to take you to the next vineyard or - if you've had enough daytime drinking - back to Stellenbosch. Tickets for the Vine Hopper cost R300 and are available from the Tourism and Information Bureau or the larger hotels. Other activities available in the area include whitewater rafting and tour organizers can also be found at the Bureau.

The Rupert Museum houses the late Dr. Anton Rupert’s and his wife Huberte Rupert’s private art collection, which began in the 1940s. Anton Rupert, a South African businessman, philanthropist, and conservationist, and his wife, Huberte, were prominent figures in support of the visual arts, as well as education, music, and the preservation of historical buildings. The museum was inspired by a fire at the Ruperts’ home, after which Huberte Rupert decided to create an art museum that would provide an intimate experience of their extensive art collection. It reflects Dr. and Mrs. Rupert’s discerning eye and personal taste, displaying a selection of what is considered a premier collection of Modern South African art.

Breathtaking scenery

Stellenbosch – a town on the scenic countryside of the western cape.

S S tellenbosch is internationally renowned for its beautiful environment, wine farms, street cafés, restaurants, quality wines, historical buildings and its famous university.

Stellenbosch owes its existence and name to the former governor of the Cape, Simon van der Stel, who established this settlement on the banks of the Eerste River in 1679, making it the second-oldest formal settlement in South Africa.

Today, it's a beautiful town, characterised by oak-lined streets and whitewashed buildings, many of Cape Dutch origin (although most of the town burnt down in 1710 and was rebuilt after that date), and lies between the imposing Simonsberg and more modest Papegaaiberg ('Parrot Mountain').

  • When to visit
  • How to get here

T T he town is centred around the university, which is primarily an Afrikaans-language institution and one of the leading universities in the country, renowned for its law and engineering faculties. It also offers courses in viticulture, the primary agricultural industry in the area, as it lies in the heart of the Cape winelands.

Many leading wine estates are located here and are home to some of the best restaurants in the country. Look out for Rust en Vrede, Jordan and Terroir, all of which have made it on to the Eat Out award list for the top 10 restaurants in the country.

Among the oldest and most developed wine estates close to town (about 10km away) is Spier, which was originally established in 1692. Today it offers a host of activities you can enjoy, from Segway tours to wine tasting, picnics and a bird of prey exhibition (called Eagle Encounters). There's also a conference centre, hotel and several restaurants from which to choose, as well as an amphitheatre that plays host to the annual Spier Performing Arts Festival. Other estates to consider visiting include Delheim, Thelema, Tokara and Blaauwklippen.

For a more contemporary experience, book a table for the dinner/show known as  AmaZink , which tells the story of the Kayamandi township through dance and music. It's a popular seasonal event that takes place in Kayamandi, to rave reviews.

T T he town also hosts regular festivals, among them the Woordfees (Word Festival) ,  an Afrikaans-language event focusing on the written word and attracting leading writers and poets.

In summer the Oude Libertas, an outdoor amphitheatre located on a wine farm on the edge of town, has regular performances and patrons are encouraged to enjoy a glass of wine and a picnic before the show.

Art lovers are also well-catered for here with several collections of note. Among them is the Rupert Museum, showcasing the private collection of the Rupert family and featuring some 350 artworks of famous South African artists, among them Pierneef and Irma Stern.

On the outskirts of Stellenbosch is a beautiful valley called Jonkershoek, which leads to a nature reserve of the same name located in a cul-de-sac in the mountains. This area is popular with hikers, trail runners and mountain bikers, and is well worth the detour as the scenery here is nothing short of breathtaking.

Welcome to the month of June. In South Africa, June is Youth month. During this month, we honour our brave young people who took to the streets to protest against the apartheid government’s decision to introduce Afrikaans as a medium of instruction in schools. The protests were met with brutal force from the police, resulting in the deaths of many young people. The significance of Youth Month is to acknowledge the role that these young students played in the struggle for freedom and to celebrate their contribution to the development of the South Africa we have come to live in and enjoy. It is also an opportunity to reflect on the challenges that young people face today, including high rates of unemployment and poverty. June 16 is a very important day in our history and we continue to invite the world to come to our country to learn about this and other historic events that make our country’s history and heritage so rich. The month is marked by various activities, such as educational events, cultural performances, and community service initiatives, aimed at empowering and inspiring young people to become active citizens and leaders in their communities.

Things to Do in Stellenbosch: A Guide to South Africa’s Wine Region

tourist information stellenbosch

South Africa is one of my top five favorite countries — but it’s easily my #1 favorite wine country in the world. The wines here are extraordinary, shockingly affordable, and they have tastes that I don’t experience in any other country.

I don’t know what it is about South African wines. I’m more of a red wine fan in general, and love me some Pinotage, but South Africa’s whites are magical — they have warm, vanilla-y notes that enthrall me. No other whites are like that.

If you want to go wine tasting in South Africa, many people spend a day in Constantia or one of the suburbs immediately outside Cape Town. But if you want to do South African wine country right, spend a few days in Stellenbosch.

Introducing Stellenbosch

Stellenbosch is a university town about an hour outside Cape Town. It’s one of the oldest towns in South Africa and it’s populated primarily by Afrikaners (Afrikaans-speaking people of Dutch descent). And it is world renowned for its wines!

Stellenbosch has a population of roughly 100,000, which makes it a great size for wandering. The downtown area is home to several top-notch hotels, restaurants, cafes, and shops. And because of the university, it has a laid-back, youthful atmosphere.

The #1 Reason Why You Should Spend a Few Days in Stellenbosch

Because South Africa is an exhausting destination and you’ll need a break.

Don’t get me wrong — I adore this country fiercely and whole-heartedly. But South Africa takes a lot out of you. You need to be much more cautious about safety, and not only in the cities ( see my South Africa safety guide here ). Going on safari is awesome, but game drives require pre-dawn wakeup calls and you may be out in the harsh sun or freezing cold for hours, often both on the same day. And if you’re diving into culture, much of South Africa’s recent history is painful and heavy, especially if you visit lots of Apartheid-centric sights.

In short, give yourself downtime.

One of the biggest mistakes I see travelers make is not leaving any time for downtime. Travel is exhausting under normal circumstances, and trying to see literally everything is a good way to run yourself ragged. So plan some low-key days into your itinerary no matter where you go, whether it’s a day chilling out at a beach club in Sicily or a day cafe-hopping and photo-taking in Paris .

For our two-week trip, my friend Beth and I started with a few days in Johannesburg. Next was a few days on safari in Kruger National Park. We then hit up Cape Town for a few days. Stellenbosch would be the final destination.

And that itinerary was perfect . By the time we arrived in Stellenbosch, we were ready to veg out and relax.

tourist information stellenbosch

Day One: Stellenbosch’s Best Wineries

We lucked out on our first day — my friend Charmain, who is married to my college friend Mark, offered to drive us from Cape Town to Stellenbosch, visiting three of her favorite wineries. Charmain is from Pretoria but she’s lived in Cape Town for a long time and I found that many locals agreed that she took us to the best places!

tourist information stellenbosch

Fairview Wine and Cheese — Come here for the cheese.

When you arrive at Fairview Wine and Cheese , you’ll see a few goats hanging out by the entrance. Yes, they make their own goat cheese here! And lots of other kinds of cheeses.

tourist information stellenbosch

The three of us sampled several wines and cheeses. And while the wines were good, the cheeses were exemplary . We bought a few to take home as well. If you are a cheese fan in the least, you need to come here!

tourist information stellenbosch

Spice Route — Come here for the food.

Spice Route is a collection of eateries and restaurants near Paarl, just outside Stellenbosch. Theres a section for cured meats, there’s a deli, there’s a pizza place, and there’s even a brewery called Barley and Bilton that serves beer and biltong (South African jerky). And of course, they have wine tasting as well!

tourist information stellenbosch

We tasted four wines with some cured meats. You know I enjoyed that pairing! After, Charmain took us for some South African-style pancakes, rolled thin like crepes.

tourist information stellenbosch

Waterford — Come here for the chocolate.

Waterford is the winery I heard recommended most often from locals in Stellenbosch. It’s got a luxurious atmosphere and feels like a grand manor belonging to some member of royalty. Their wines aren’t half bad, either.

tourist information stellenbosch

At Waterford we took part in their chocolate tasting! We each received three wines to pair with three little squares of chocolate. It was a stormy day and it felt amazing to curl up by the fireplace.

Day Two: Vine Hopper and Four Wineries

For our second day, Beth and I decided to try the Vinehopper — a hop-on, hop-off van visiting several wineries. They take several routes depending on the day, so you can take three different routes three days in a row if you’d like.

I found this to be the best way for people without a car (or people who all want to drink) to sample lots of places in Stellenbosch. What you lose in spontaneity you gain in convenience.

We took the Southern Route. Here are the wineries we visited:

tourist information stellenbosch

Neethlingshof

Neethlingshof had a modern atmosphere with a fancy dining room for sampling. We tried several reds and whites and I bought a bottle of The Owl Post to take home.

tourist information stellenbosch

Spier was next, and while we didn’t do a full tasting, we sampled their sparkling rosé and a cheese plate. I also bought a bottle of their chenin blanc to take home (and it’s the only bottle I have left after nine months!). Spier has beautiful grounds as well, so it’s a good spot to take some outdoor photos.

tourist information stellenbosch

Bilton Wines

Like Waterford, Bilton Wines is famous for their wine and chocolate tasting! But the pieces we got here were much larger than the ones at Waterford. Each one was roughly the size of a Kit-Kat strip. They also have award-winning merlot that pairs well with the cardamom chocolate.

tourist information stellenbosch

Kleine Zalze

Well, let’s be honest — by the time you hit the fourth winery in a day, your memories start getting fuzzy. I did enjoy Kleine Zalze , though, and I bought one of their bottles of red to take home.

Vinehopper has three different routes. A one-day pass costs 300 rand ($22) and a two-day pass costs 540 rand ($40). Wine tastings are not included in the price, but they generally cost 15-45 rand ($1-3) for around six tastes at each winery. Note that the wineries close at 5:00 PM, so you’re best off getting an early start.

Day Three: Day Trip to Franschoek

Franschoek is like a mini version of Stellenbosch with a French flair, about 45 minutes away by car. It’s a much smaller town filled with galleries, jewelry shops, and cafes.

tourist information stellenbosch

We started with some wine by the fireplace at a restaurant called Dutch East. I’m pretty sure we were the youngest people there by 30 years.

tourist information stellenbosch

Our one tasting of the day was at Franschoek Cellar , where we paired six elegant wines with six delicious cheeses. (Note: on the map it looks technically within walking distance from the town, and it was, but we were the only people actually walking on that road!)

tourist information stellenbosch

When we were planning our trip, Beth and I discussed whether to stay in Franschoek or Stellenbosch. Overall, we were happy with our decision to stay in Stellenbosch. We would have been bored out of our minds after two days in Franschoek. If we had stayed longer, I’m sure we would have done their wine tram .

We took an Uber from Stellenbosch to Franschoek but couldn’t summon any in the area on the way back, so we had a restaurant call us a cab. The Uber cost us 258 rand ($19) and took 45 minutes; our cab on the way back cost 300 rand ($22).

Day Four: Unusual Stellenbosch Wineries

Our flight departed Cape Town late in the afternoon, so we were determined to get a few more tastings in before we left. Beth found a driver who would take us to a few wineries and then to the airport from there. It was the perfect way to enjoy our final day in Stellenbosch.

tourist information stellenbosch

Fleur du Cap — Come here for their salt tasting.

As soon as I heard that there was a wine tasting paired with salts, I knew I had to try it! Fleur du Cap offers a tasting where they give you five wines, five salts, and several little dishes for experimenting with the salts. One was a stuffed grape leaf; another was olive paste.

It was so much fun! This tasting is why I now use pink Himalayan sea salt all the time in my cooking. (It sounds more expensive than it is — you can get it for like $4 at Trader Joe’s.) Beth and I were also both horrified by Indian black salt, which smells like rotten eggs. Apparently vegans like it because it’s an animal-free way to get the taste of eggs. But isn’t the taste of eggs the worst part about them? It’s all about the texture, baby!

Salt tastings take place at 12:00 PM only and you must book in advance.

tourist information stellenbosch

Cavalli Wine and Stud Farm — Come here for the photo ops.

Cavalli Wine and Stud Farm was easily the most scenic winery we visited. The grounds were so beautiful and the building itself was a modern masterpiece. All of their wines are named after horses. We sampled a few wines and a cheese plate and they actually gave us a free bottle of wine to take home because they were busy and took so long.

And with that, we were off to Cape Town to catch our flight to Johannesburg, then to Amsterdam, then home to New York.

tourist information stellenbosch

But which wineries were the very best?

If you’re limited on time, I would prioritize visiting the very best of Stellenbosch. That would be cheese tasting at Fairview, chocolate tasting at Waterford, and salt tasting at Fleur du Cap.

Where to Stay in Stellenbosch

My recommendation is to stay in a hotel within or just outside the city center. That way you can get around easily by walking. Here are my recommendations for places at every price range in downtown Stellenbosch:

If you’re looking for budget accommodation in Stellenbosch, Ikhaya Stellenbosch Backpackers has dorms, private rooms, and apartment-style suites for a low price and a great location right by the center of town.

If you want a mid-range hotel, Stellenbosch Hotel  has the feel of a B&B with the amenities of a hotel, right in the center of town.

If you want something high-end but not too  expensive, check out  Coopmanhuijs Boutique Hotel , a stylish Stellenbosch boutique hotel with a pool in the center of town.

And if you want to blow your budget, you probably don’t care about being in town because you can afford to hire a driver for your whole trip. If that’s the case, go for Delaire Graff Lodge — it’s pretty much the most luxurious property in the Stellenbosch area.

You can find more Stellenbosch hotels here.

Where to Eat in Stellenbosch

Many of the wineries serve food, but if you’re looking for restaurants in Stellenbosch, here are some that we enjoyed:

The Big Easy  is an excellent yet affordable high-end dinner spot.  I loved my venison, but the standout was Beth’s parmesan and mushroom risotto.

Hudson’s The Burger Joint  is a popular upscale burger chain.  And it has a bit of a New York theme, which didn’t hurt. Get one of the burgers with bacon jam! (Thanks for taking us, Kate and Alessio!)

Melissa’s the Food Shop is an adorable cafe and grocery store. It’s only open for breakfast and lunch, and they have adorable pastries. This is also a good place to stock up on food souvenirs.

The Bird Cage is a quirky café that does lovely breakfast dishes.  Their main business is wedding cakes. This is one restaurant that will look great on Instagram, FYI.

Tiger’s Milk is a delicious casual chain with great pizzas. I didn’t eat here, but I ate at the one in Muizenberg in Cape Town. Bacon-avocado-feta is a mysteriously popular combination in South Africa and I highly recommend their bacon-avocado-feta pizza! (Thanks for taking us, Mark and Charmain!)

And don’t underestimate having a meal of wine and cheese back at your place!

How to Get Around Stellenbosch

The conundrum about wine regions around the world is that they are best to explore by car — yet driving is the last thing you should be doing while wine tasting.

You may want to rent a car and have one person stay sober. But if you both want to drink, look into hiring transportation!

You can summon Ubers within the town of Stellenbosch, but summoning them at outside wineries and in Franschoek is difficult to impossible. In that case, ask the winery to call you a cab.

I loved the day we spent on the Vine Hopper and it was a great way to experience lots of wineries without worrying about transportation. And hiring a driver from a tour company was the most logistically easy way to visit a few wineries, leave our bags with him, and go directly to the airport from there.

When to Visit Stellenbosch

Stellenbosch is a great year-round destination. Beth and I visited in the winter (July) and while I was a bit nervous, as winter weather is roughest on the Western Cape, winter ended up being a great time to visit.

The main reason? Fireplaces . It seemed like nearly every winery had a fireplace or two, and it was so nice to bundle up near a roaring fire with a glass of Chenin Blanc in your hand!

Secondly, hardly anyone was visiting then. We were often the only two people visiting a winery. And because of that, hotel prices were lower, too.

Weather-wise, some days were sunny, some were rainy, and some were a mix, but a light leather or denim jacket with a scarf was all we needed. Pack an umbrella because the weather can change quickly.

You can’t go wrong any time of year, though. Fall is a popular time to visit, as that’s when the new bottles will be coming out, and summer is high season. Do be prepared for higher prices and bigger crowds in those seasons.

On Tourism and Race in Stellenbosch

One thing I noticed was that nearly every single tourist I saw in Stellenbosch was white. The only black people I saw were working. I noticed this often throughout South Africa, but it was more significant in Stellenbosch than anywhere else.

However, that changed at our final winery, Cavalli, where nearly every guest was black. (It’s worth noting that we were at Cavalli was on a Saturday, which is a popular day for Capetonians to visit rather than tourists.)

Racism in the wine tourism industry is not unheard of — a few years ago, a group of black women were kicked off a wine train in Napa Valley for apparently laughing and talking too loudly (aka #LaughingWhileBlack); they were met by police when they arrived at the station. The company claimed it was “acute insensitivity” and not racial bias at play; the women sued the company and reached a private settlement.

I’m not knowledgeable enough about race relations in South Africa to speak at length, but I will say this: Most non-South Africans assume that things immediately got better when Apartheid ended. That’s not true. Laws may have changed, but new injustices sprang up to replace the old laws. It’s similar to the United States — a lot of people assume things got better once the Civil Rights Movement happened, but the injustice only changed form. Now it’s in the form of criminal injustice and police brutality, among many other things.

What I do recommend is having conversations with South Africans about their lives. Talk to black people, white people, colored people (colored means mixed race and is a non-derogatory term in South Africa), Asian people. Don’t insist that everyone tell you about Apartheid , because it’s nobody’s job to educate you on their painful time in history, but you’d be surprised at how often South Africans bring up Apartheid on their own. Either way, I guarantee your eyes will be opened once you hear their life stories.

After seeing how white the wine tourism industry is in Stellenbosch, I wish I had made an effort to visit black-owned wineries. You should do the same. Here’s  a list of black-owned wineries  in South Africa; here’s a Guardian feature on black-owned wineries  in South Africa.

The Takeaway

Stellenbosch was one of the highlights of our trip. Both Beth and I loved our time there and our three and a half days of drinking wine and eating cheese was the perfect way to wind down after ten busy days in South Africa.

Would I return? You absolutely bet I would! I only scraped the surface when it comes to wineries!

Oh, and one last tidbit:

I brought six bottles of my favorite wines home. I didn’t pay more than $11 for any of them.

tourist information stellenbosch

Essential Info:  To get into Stellenbosch, you can take a cab, bus, or train from Cape Town. There are also several private shuttle services. If we hadn’t had Charmain to drive us, we would have taken a private shuttle. Locals I spoke to recommended avoiding the train. You can find hotels in Stellenbosch here. I recently read Trevor Noah’s book Born a Crime , which is about his childhood during and after Apartheid in South Africa. It’s an outstanding, gripping, fascinating book and I urge you to read it before you visit South Africa. I actually recommend getting the audio version because Trevor does tons of different accents, languages, and voices. South African power adapters are hard to find outside South Africa — get one before your trip . Don’t visit South Africa without travel insurance. Whether you get appendicitis while on safari and need to be hospitalized, or your phone gets stolen in Cape Town, or an injury means you need to cancel all or part of your trip, travel insurance will help you out. I use and recommend World Nomads as travel insurance for trips to South Africa.

Talent 360 winner in the drama category: Leatitia

tourist information stellenbosch

Almost 2 weeks ago was the final of Talent 360, a glamourous gala event. The gala was a success and an amazing experience for all finalists. Two of the winners (Leatitia and Razia) were interviewed weeks before the event took place. Meet in this blog the winner of the drama category, meet Leatitia!

Leatitia Solomons (33 years old) is a finalist for the drama category in the Talent360-competition. Leatitia won the semi-finals in Cloetesville. She was born in Stellenbosch hospital, but grew up on a farm together with her two siblings, parents and grandparents. When she was 7 years old her parents built a house in Tennantville and moved in. Leatitia and her siblings stayed behind with her grandparents. When she grew older she had to move to town, there was no high school where she grew up and her grandfather decided that she needed to go to a good school now . Laetitia ended up at Bloemhof Girls High.

After High school she went to Boland College, here she qualified as a Legal Secretary. She decided this wasn’t good enough and followed an extra course in wine at the Wine Academy. And so Leatitia ended up in the wine industry of Stellenbosch. Here she got into different jobs, at the Municipality, Haumann Smal design studio, Boschendal Wines and at Vinimark The Wine Company. “I was making money, but somehow I wasn’t really happy.”

In 2009, Leatitia’s life changed completely when her grandmother died, out of the blue. “She always supported me in singing when I was a child. So I realized that what I was doing wasn’t really what I wanted to do in my life. Plus the fact that I couldn’t get off from my job, was part of the reason why I resigned for the job. I was scared of course, because I had a comfortable life and a comfortable job.” She decided to focus on her passion: drama. Despite this great change in her life, Leatitia is very grateful for the support she gets from the family.

Leatitia’s first job in drama was at the Breughel Theater in Cloetesville. The job was to go to primary schools and do educational puppet theater. “I learnt a lot, I told them I don’t mind if you don’t pay me, but tell me anything that I could do, anything. Just to do drama.” Leatitia didn’t get paid, but through networking with people, she found a job as understudy for the educational theater of the Stellenbosch university. She loved the job, however her grandfather got a stroke last year and she could no longer combine her work and the care of her grandfather. Nowadays, Leatitia is doing a lot of auditions, she even has her own agent.

Being unemployed no longer scares Leatitia. “I understand that life is about money, about providing. You need to earn money to survive. And sometimes you have to put your dream behind so that you can think of your children’s dream. If I was a parent, I would probably.” One of the reasons why Leatitia keeps on trying is because she knows she has the qualifications and experience to fall back on. But she understands this is not the reality for everyone. “I know it is difficult for people to follow their dream, because of the fact you need to earn serious money. But remember – I didn’t die when I chose to do what I want to do. I believe it is possible.”

When she got to hear about the Talent360-competition she thought in the first place that she was too old to participate. She didn’t spent much time thinking about participating when she found herself in Idas Valley library while auditions were on. Later, when Talent360 came to Cloetesville she found out that she wasn’t too old, and the prizes – like performing at the Woordfees – interested her and so she ended up at the auditions. “The thing is I never did something on my own, something alone in front of a lot of people. It is easier when you perform with a group of people. You can react on other people. But with you all alone there, it is just you and your voice and your emotions. The competition was the first time that I wrote something myself, and that I was performing all alone.”

The piece that Leatitia wrote for the competition is based on a true story. “I went to the clinic, because I am unemployed I couldn’t afford to go to the doctor any longer”. She was inspired by what she experienced there.

She loved to perform in front of the big audience at the Open Day. “I think why I love drama is because you can be so many different people and sometimes you tell the sad stories and people think you are acting.” At the moment Leatitia is busy working on something new. “I want to do the competition and I wanna do my best. And… win. Oh, I want to win!”

PORTIA – ROUTE 360

Route 360 will be the first route in South-Africa that is a non-geographical route. It is a route that consist of packages for the visitors of Stellenbosch, which include cultural activities that were previously only accessible to local inhabitants. Stellenbosch 360 created Route 360 to provide a platform for previously disadvantaged communities who generally lack tourism infrastructure to enter tourism through cultural activities, using inherent talent and existing resources. Through blogging I would like to introduce these local inhabitants, in this blog you will meet Portia. Portia has big ambitions.

tourist information stellenbosch

Portia Nzanzana, 41 years, was born in Port Elizabeth. Portia is a jewelry designer and dreams of her own art gallery. Portia moved to the Western Cape in 1984, because there was a strike and the people were fighting for education. Her parents decided that Portia would go to school in the Western Cape. Portia never finished high school, she came unto grade 10, and then decided to go to the fashion design school. After one year she had to quit fashion designing because of finance and Portia started working, “You know back then, you needed people to guide you, it was difficult because of costing’s. And so I ended up just making money, first part-time, but soon I ended up working fulltime.”

For many years Portia went from one job into the other. She was a packer at Stellenbosch winery, she found a job in several shops and finally ended up as a cleaner. But in 2004, Portia met the right person who could bring her back on the path of her passion, designing. While Portia was working at a farm, she met a lady with a designing shop in Cape Town. They started talking and together decided that Portia could help her with designing. Portia wasn’t into fashion designing for a long time, and when she started designing again it was great fun and a great release. Portia was designing necklaces, bracelets, earrings and many other things, it was the place where Portia realized her real passion in life, designing. But there was also another passion that raised in Portia, being business-minded lady, she longed to have her own shop. And so Portia decided to pull out and do her own thing.

In 2006, Portia started to design her own products and took it with her to the Ikhaya Trust centre in Kayamandi, the manager decided that it was good and gave Portia a place to sell her products. While selling her own products, Portia had to share the shop with four other ladies. Tourists used to come to this place and business was going well. Unfortunately, in 2009, Ikhaya Trust centre started a renovation of the building, but arranged an alternative for its crafters and Portia and other people were moved to a container. Here, business wasn’t going well.

Portia realizes very well that since she started to work for herself in 2006 she started growing. “I can see that I was growing, I could finally move forward. I didn’t want to stay low all the time, I want to reach something in life. But I realize that I can’t move fast, you have to take small steps forward, going up slowly.” At the moment Portia is working in a small shop, which is not hers, she feels stuck, but realizes that earning money is important. She wants her children to finish their education, and her daughter is now going to Boland College.

“I’m looking forward to have my own shop, to have an art gallery.” Portia’s dream is an ambitious but clear one and she knows where she is aiming for. “I want a place where tourists can come, I want them to come to one place.” And so, Portia’s dream is not one for herself, but also one for the other crafters in Kayamandi. Portia wants an art gallery where all people of Kayamandi can show their products, not only her own products will be there. “But the problem is that most people don’t want to focus on business, they want to work for someone, which is difficult. They don’t know that their stuff is valuable. For a shop to function you need someone who says, okay we will focus on this and this is the plan.” Portia knows that she is capable of taking this role in the business, and that is why she won’t give up. Portia does not just want a normal craft shop, she is clearly calling it an art gallery. “I’m a designer, I do art. I don’t say that I am beading stuff, no I design. The reason why I say so: plenty of stuff is not peoples own. You know what I do is very simple, but when you start designing, you come up with new ideas and you bring new kind of products on the market all the time.” The art gallery will show products that you cannot find anywhere else, and therefore Portia would like to have a website on the internet. People need to know what is going on in Kayamandi, tourists must be able to find out why they should go to the art gallery in Kayamandi, and so Portia would like to start advertising on the net. Recently she got her first tablet and the first steps are taken.

Portia would like to make sure that this art gallery will be there in a few years. “It will boost the economy and hopefully we can make some money.” And then the next step will be going online, going national and international. “I hope that someday people can order my products online. But by that time the gallery must be busy and we must be making money.” And all the while, Portia would like to offer her own family something she never got, which is good education so that they will be able to reach for their dreams in life.

--- We all know that there are two sides to every story, and when it comes to Stellenbosch, the more common story goes along the lines of: “This university town is home to South Africa’s most famous wine route and oldest university”. And while the sip-and-swirl rep is worth noting, there is plenty more that this quaint yet buzzing town has to offer.

We’re talking ‘undiscovered’ hiking trails, exciting township tours, food adventures, museums, art galleries and so much more. Think of this as your chance to get acquainted with the lesser known, but equally charming side of the Stellenbosch story and your opportunity to indulge in all that the Town of Oaks is made of.

WALKING TOURS IN STELLENBOSCH

Stellenbosch on Foot Tour What better way to get acquainted with the beautiful town of Stellenbosch than by taking a 90-minute Stellenbosch on Foot Tour. This funky walkabout provides a crash course on the history of the Town of Oaks – and trust us, the history of the village is worth knowing. The exciting expedition takes place every day from Monday to Friday (and by appointment on weekends) at 11am and 3pm and takes you through historic streets (namely Church Street, Dorp Street and Ryneveld Street) that host some of South Africa’s oldest houses. We’re talking houses that were built in the 1700s, 1800s and 1900s and that reflect the beautiful architectural style and stature of each era – think gable-style houses that exhibit beautiful doors and yellowwood beams, Cape revival-style architecture, German-style compressed H-plan houses and more stunning architectural and visual highlights. Pre-booking is essential for all tours.

Bites and Sites Food Tour Renowned chef Julia Child once said, “Life itself is the proper binge,” and none rings more true to that than Bites and Sites. Bridging cultural gaps, the organisation offers a delicious range of food tours that explore the culinary history and culture of different South African cuisines – think Cape Malay, traditional Afrikaans food, kasi cuisine and more. The expeditions provide visitors with a unique way of discovering the town, as Hanli Fourie (manager of the company) believes that one of the best ways to get to know a place intimately is through food. One of the company’s most interesting offerings is a Cape Malay cooking class, which allows tour-goers to savour the multi-dimensional taste of Stellenbosch and the Western Cape to an even greater extent. The tours are diverse, multicultural, multifaceted and multilingual activities that blend the old and new aspects of Stellenbosch to give you a tasty experience. Good to know: You can tailor make your own tours (think birthday celebrations, anniversaries and more).

Stellenbrau Brewery Tour Designed to show beer lovers (and others) the intricacies of the beer brewing business, Stellenbosch’s very own craft brewing company has opened its doors to the public and offers one-of-a-kind brewery tours. The short guided tour (25 minutes) takes enthusiasts to different parts of Stellenbrau, shows them all sorts of equipment and provides them with an in-depth explanation of the beer-making process: what distinguishes a great beer from a good one, choice of hops, packaging types, difference in grain choice, and many other questions will be answered. The tour then ends off with a guided beer tasting session in Stellenbrau’s tasting room (that is also open to the public)! Groups are welcome, and booking is essential. Tour Times: Monday – Friday: 12pm, 2pm and 4pm; Saturday 1pm and 3pm; Sunday on Special Request

GALLERIES AND MUSEUMS IN STELLENBOSCH

D-Street Gallery Embodying the idea of ‘old meets new’, the D-Street Gallery, located in one of Stellenbosch’s historic buildings, houses South African contemporary art by emerging and established artists. The style of the gallery can be fit into the ‘avant-garde’ stream, and some have even described the ambience of the gallery as “energetic”, “different” and “compelling”. The intimate space creates a great setting for art-lovers to appreciate works from diverse artists. Exhibitions take place throughout the year (and change regularly). Opening times:   Monday – Friday: 10am – 4pm; Saturday: 10am – 1pm

tourist information stellenbosch

SMAC Art Gallery The eclectic yet classic style of the SMAC Art Gallery on Church Street is one of the many feats that make this exhibition space unique. Mixing South African and international art, SMAC aims to create and encourage dialogue between artists and the community. The minimalist design of the SMAC gallery was inspired by the need to create a simplistic space that will give art the platform to do its own talking, and the simplicity of the gallery helps the art either blend in or stand out. What’s more, SMAC has taken things to a whole new level by relocating its sister gallery in Cape Town to the trendy Woodstock area, and the two galleries complement one another as the one in Stellenbosch is more of a classic feel, while the Cape Town gallery is more of the ‘experimental’ counterpart. Opening times: Monday – Friday: 9am – 5pm; Saturday: 9am – 3pm

Rupert Museum Pablo Picasso once said “art washes away from the soul the dust of everyday life,” and it seems that Anton Rupert’s wife, Huberte, understood this well. So much so in fact, that she wanted to share this revelation with the rest of the world. The Rupert Museum, which is her effort to do so, is billed as the premier collection of contemporary South African art from 1940 to 1970. The Cape Dutch-style house provides a home to over 350 works, including South Africa’s biggest Irma Stern collection and a number of beautiful sculptures, paintings and tapestries. While the gallery does hold some international works, its primary focus is to fly the Mzansi flag high with works from artists such as Alexis Preller, JH Pierneef, Penny Siopis, Willem Strydom and more. Opening times: Monday – Friday: 9.30am – 4pm; Saturday: 10am – 1pm

Village Museum No Stellenbosch museum adventure is complete without a visit to one of its oldest museums – the Village Museum, which is pretty much like stepping into a time machine and rocketing back into centuries past. Made up of four dwelling houses from different eras (from 1709 to 1929), the institution gives keen explorers a glimpse of how houses actually looked through the different periods as well as an idea of the type of fashion, furniture and design that prevailed in each era. Not to mention, a guide (aptly dressed in a costume) is available to tell you what history each house carries. Opening times: Monday – Saturday: 9am – 5pm; Sunday: 10am – 1pm (April – August), 10am – 4pm (September – March)

Accordingly, there is a chance to touch and feel Burmese pythons, tarantulas and more. OTHER COOL THINGS TO DO / PLACES TO SEE IN STELLENBOSCH

Check out Oom Samie Se Winkel We’re not even kidding when we say that you can find pretty much anything at Oom Samie se Winkel, Stellenbosch’s oldest business. The shop dates back to 1904 and was opened by iconic general dealer Oom Samie. Expect to find things like pure jam, rice, rooibos, records, sling shots, dolls, bags, plates, spoons, tobacco, old books and so much more! The shop is so full with all sorts of enticing (and somewhat eccentric) items that you need to be sure to avoid breaking things. Opening times: Monday – Friday: 8:30am – 5:30pm; Saturday – Sunday: 9am – 5pm

Take a walk through the University of Stellenbosch and its botanical garden The Stellenbosch Botanical Garden forms part of the University of Stellenbosch and serves as a great place to not only relax, but find out more about current projects that are being undertaken by the university (think exhibitions and functions). The greenway boasts a lily pond with giant Victorian water-lilies, an extensive bonsai collection, four greenhouses and some of the tallest trees in the world, like the California redwood and the giant sequoia. Moreover, the garden is home to a small specialist nursery, the Katjiepiering restaurant and the BioBou shop, which sells unique African cosmetic and medicinal products, various books, seeds and local plant products. The university itself is worth taking a stroll through as it is architecturally stunning.

The nature reserve is a biodiverse area, home to over 1,100 plant species and a variety of fauna, including small mammals, birds, and reptiles. Hikers in the area should be cautious, as it is also home to several snake species such as berg adders, puff adders, boomslang, and Cape cobras. The trails in Jonkershoek offer a mix of runnable and technical routes, catering to both runners and hikers of varying skill levels. These trails are ranked by difficulty, providing beautiful views and diverse experiences, though they may occasionally be closed due to weather conditions.

One popular hiking route is the Jonkershoek mountain trail to the Waterfalls. This hike, taking around 5 hours for a round trip, is rewarding even in less-than-perfect weather. However, hikers should be prepared for a somewhat lengthy initial walk before reaching the more scenic waterfall trail, and the path can be particularly windy. The real beauty of the trail reveals itself past this initial section, leading to a remarkable experience in nature. Visitors are advised to exercise caution, especially when crossing rivers, as they can be slippery after rain. Jonkershoek Nature Reserve, with its stunning landscapes and variety of trails, offers a rich, adventurous experience for both groups and solo explorers.

There are plenty of things to do in Stellenbosch, South Africa that shows how the heritage-filled region is more than just home to world-renowned wines.

South Africa is a country that is, quite often, devastatingly misunderstood. While defined by its two cities of Cape Town and Johannesburg, South Africa is also a stage for one of the world’s most exceptional and award-winning wine regions – Stellenbosch.

Said to be the most historically preserved town in South Africa, Stellenbosch is where old Dutch-Colonial history is infused with energetic University town vibes – a heritage-filled, vibrant centre of a mountainous nature basin filled with dozens upon dozens of vineyards and wine estates that stretch for miles.

As a pivotal base from which to travel to the Western Cape, it is soon clear that there is more to the region than just your standard wine tasting experience, extending to culinary and cultural offerings which I’ve pulled together in this Stellenbosch guide.

While many day-trip here from Cape Town, Stellenbosch is a stand-alone destination for a multi-night stay, where you can either use the town as your base or stay in one of the estates overlooking the orchards and flanked by peaks.

With trips to Cape Town factored in, the ‘Food & Wine Capital of South Africa’ was my main base for a week of indulgence, culture and adventure combined. Here’s how you can do it too.

Visit Historical Stellenbosch Town

Visit the delheim wine estate – for wine and cupcake pairing, go to the spier wine farm – for segway vineyard tours, take a trip to the avontuur estate – for wine and fudge pairing, spend time at middelvlei wine estate – for wine making, head to jordan wine estate – for a vineyard safari, visit rozendal guest farm – where acidic wines became a vinegar empire, get to the delaire graff estate – for a flagship estate experience, don’t miss tokara vineyard – for olive oil tasting, eat at stellenbosch vineyards – for a bus stop themed lunch, getting to south africa, where to stay in stellenbosch, how to get to stellenbosch from cape town, when is the best time to visit stellenbosch, trips and tours in stellenbosch, the things to do in stellenbosch.

A short 50km from Cape Town, Stellenbosch is the second-oldest town in South Africa, founded in 1679 by Simon van der Stel who was the late governor and father of wine agriculture in the Cape Colony. Peaceful oak tree-lined avenues are filled with Dutch, Georgian and Victorian architecture ( including South Africa’s oldest hotel, Oude Werf ), boutique stores, bistros and bars, and interlaced with public artworks.

New enterprise gives the town an edgy vibe to its old roots. Blue Crane Coffee is more than a coffee shop – it is a coffee ‘lab’ and roaster combined. Love Wine Studio brings a variety of leading wineries together in a chic space. De Warenmarkt is an 18th-century historical building in the cultural district awash with all manner of feasts and fares, including meats, a juice corner, and an Oyster Bar.

In Stellenbosch town you will also find boutique clothing stores, art galleries and outdoor art sculptures, intertwining old architecture with public spaces and the historic pavements. One of my favourites was the ‘Can we Talk for a Minute’ letter and found objects boxes.

Where to Go Wine Tasting in Stellenbosch

Without a doubt, wine tasting tops the list of all things to do in Stellenbosch. Rich soils, rainy winters and warm summers provide the perfect terroir for the cultivation of first-class wines, which is what Stellenbosch is predominantly known for. With so many wineries to choose from it can be hard to narrow down which ones to visit. However, there’s more to wine tasting here than the standard swirl, smell and spittoon style.

Stellenbosch is home to unique wine and food pairings, estates that invite you to enquire with an adventurous spirit, and restaurants on-site with an international mix or a quirky twist on South African cuisine.

Stellenbosch wine tour planning means deciding on how – private, group or self-drive options – as well as where to go. Here’s my pick of the estates I visited and the one special thing that makes them stand out.

If a Cape Malay feast wasn’t enough to start the evening’s wine tasting with the local winemaker, Reg Holder, we were treated to a new take on exploring the Delheim vineyard’s flavours – with cupcakes.

I’ve always tasted wine with standard cheese or chocolate pairing boards, but the cupcake idea was an original take on combining sweet flavours. The perfect dessert, or even a fancy treat in the daytime where you can lounge in the estate’s gardens with a view of Table Mountain.

A woman in a black jacket drinks a glass of wine in front of an exposed brick wall. The blackboard sign says 'Time to Uncork' with the logo of Delheim Wine Estate in Stellenbosch

Spier is a popular estate, but one of the best things about it is the fact that this 1,000-hectare estate has a lot to showcase beyond the wine-tasting room. One of Stellenbosch’s oldest wine farms , its grounds are tranquil for a calming walk, even from the Spier Hotel to the Wine Tasting room, which is lined with 230 indigenous coral trees.

two worn tracks run through the middle of the green grass of a vineyard in Stellenbosch. Rows of vines line either side of the track with mountains in the background

I got to tour the Spier Wine vineyards with friends on a Segway, covering more ground in a short time and kicking up some adrenalin before wine tasting Spier’s awarded range of blends called Creative Block. The range is inspired by an art project that combines artworks from different artists to create something altogether different.

Three wine glasses, one containing white wine and two with red wine are lined up in a row as part of a wine tasting session. On the wine glasses is written 1692 Spier - the name of the vineyard in Stellenbosch, South Africa

Wine tasting session at Spier Wine Farm

A man in grey t-shirt holds out a bottle of wine for review. The beige label features an illustrated number 2 and the words 'Creative Block 2016. Sauvignon Blanc. Spier 1962'.

And with adventure comes a big appetite, so even if wine indulgence isn’t your thing, Spier is also known for its Afro-Texan BBQ restaurant called the Hoghouse. Save a lot of space, because they also have a craft beer offering. You might need a rest in the estate’s 4-star hotel afterwards.

Two silver trays contained breadcrumbled balls, bowls of green and red sauces and a cut pork pie. Behind the trays is a tasting platter of four beers. The selection is from the Hoghouse BBQ at Spier Wine Estate

Avontuur Estate is one of South Africa’s top producers of Shiraz wine, which you can sip on in the beautiful national monument of the white manor house.

Like our other estate visits, we worked up an appetite for a tasting with a long walk around the estate, with over 12 hectares of white grapes and an old-fashioned trellis system for the Cabernet Sauvignon vines that were planted in the 1980s and set to a view of the Helderberg mountain range.

A man sits at a black table on a caramel coloured floor, and beneath a white outdoor structure covered in branches

It was a good job we did since Avontuur is another estate with a unique wine tasting and pairing offering – this time with fudge and nougat, from nutty flavours to mint and caramel.

A white box of 5 assorted fudge flavours in front of a row of glasses - one champagne class, three wine glasses and one liquor glass - part of the Avontuur Estate Wine and Fudge Pairing in Stellenbosch

With a setting of seemingly never-ending manicured farmland, and a sunset stage that’s one of the most colourful, an evening at Middelvlei Wine Estate was time well spent.

Not just for the braai feast, but for the hilarious fun that ensued with the friendly competition that came from winemaking – three teams mixing their varieties of Merlot, Shiraz and Cabernet Sauvignon ratios, as judged by the Momberg family themselves. A family of wine-makers since 1919 , you could say they know their stuff, especially when it comes to bottling your very own blend in style.

Two men on the left stand in the middle of a vast field of green and yellow, backed by a silver mountain peak

We came to call Jordan home for a few days , in modern cabin-style rooms set within 146 hectares of farmland. The landscape appeared to spread for miles, and in layers that eventually reached the mountains. Here the vineyards lay at differing altitudes from 160 to 410 m above sea level, and face all directions.

A man tends to the green lawn on the grounds of Jordan Wine Estate in Stellenbosch, which streches far into the distance behind the hedgerows, backed by mountains

So with such an expanse of land creating enough temptation for exploration, the best way to see it was on wheels. More specially, in a safari 4×4 to the raucous gaggle of happy friends for company, otherwise known as a ‘Vineyard Safari’.

This involves driving around the bends and slopes of this unique terrain, parking up, sipping on some of Jordans’ best blends to a panoramic view, before moving on and repeating.

A woman wearing sunglasses looks out over the top of a backseat of a jeep, while her arm hangs over the side of it. The jeep is on a gravel road with green hills in the distance

From wine came some of the tastiest vinegar blends in the regions, including those infused with local fynbos and lavender. We took a trip to the Rozendal estate, once famed for its Bordeaux blends before the owner, Kurt Ammann began experimenting with the dedicated process of vinegar making after realising his 1988 vintage contained too much volatile acidity.

The story is about how flawed wine became a ‘happy accident’, with the slow and precise techniques continued today with Kurt’s children now producing vinegar first established by their father.

A man wearing a beige top and black waistcoat pours vinegar into tiny glasses on a dark wooden table, ready for a Vinegar tasting at Rozendal Guest Farm in Stellenbosch

Delaire Graff is a classy experience , combining the exquisiteness of fine food in flagship restaurants and leading wines, with boutique stores and art, all under one roof in the Stellenbosch valleys. Our evening began with prosecco by the fireplace in a grand living room after catching the sunset, before moving on to a multi-course dinner.

A panoramic view of a a blooming green vineyards, next to an ochre orange road, backed by mountains in a pink sunlit hue. A woman in a red jacket stands on the road and is taking a picture.

Olive groves filled with artworks and flanked by mountain ranges, Tokara is a highlight for olive oil enthusiasts wanting to sample the award-winning Extra Virgin varietal (aside from wine), or those who like to breakfast or brunch in the chicest of spaces. Its Deli is a spacious, modern outlet with picture-perfect views across the manicured groves.

A stone statue of a male head sits on a structure of stones - an artistic sculpture backed by the golden rows of olive groves and a bright blue sky at Tokara Vineyard in Stellenbosch

On our final day in Stellenbosch, one last wine tasting session was the order of course, where we sampled the very best Pinotage blends especially. But like all other wineries, we had visited, there was a little extra something that accompanied the experience and made it stand out – in this case, a big, yellow traditional school bus.

The Bus Stop is a new food truck dining experience at the Stellenbosch Vineyards bringing together the very best burgers, pizzas and waffles in a bus stop themed dining area, with the bus being, of course, the bar!

A man in a grey shirt holds a bottle of wine while explaining during a tasting. A woman next to him looks down, while another tries a red wine. The table in front is full of empty wine glasses

Plans are to take the big yellow bus on the road and bring the Vineyard’s fruity blends to surrounding neighbourhoods, festivals and private events.

Things to Know About Visiting Stellenbosch

Travel to Stellenbosch is more than about just sampling its renowned, award-winning blends, but to see it for its innovation in how it presents these wines and the region to the world. The concept of wine tasting is changing, attracting a younger crowd, those with a sweeter tooth, and those looking to combine adventurous activities and modern, quirky dining concepts.

Just remember, you saw it in Stellenbosch first.

My flight to South Africa was from Munich to Johannesburg and then onto Cape Town via South African Airways .

*NOTE: You have to have one or two BLANK passport pages in your passport for entry into South Africa. I learnt the hard way, not being allowed on my first flight and embarking on a last-minute emergency round trip from Munich to London to sort a one-day passport processing!

In Stellenbosch town you can stay in the Oude Werf Hotel – a former churchyard turned 58-roomed hotel and the oldest hotel in South Africa. Located right in the heart of Stellenbosch, it combines a contemporary twist on a traditional setting, with everything in town on your doorstep.

Stellenbosch is located 50km from Cape Town and it takes approximately 30 minutes to reach the Western Cape Winelands region from the Mother City. Coastal hangouts are just 15 minutes away, should Stellenbosch be your main base and you want a combination of the big city, pristine beach and nature.

If driving to Stellenbosch, you can take the N1 from Cape Town via the R304, R44 or R300 and M12, or the N2 via the R44 or R31O. However, coaches and hire cars are available as well as trips and tours. Self-driving is recommended to see more of the region. We used First Car Rental during our time there .

The best time to visit Stellenbosch is between September to April, which marks the summer period with temperatures reaching into the 30’s.

There are plenty of day trips and tours in Stellenbosch to get the most out of your time in the region. Should you want to guide to get to know the town (which is easy enough to visit self-guided) or to get out into the wider reaches of the Winelands for township tours or adventure activities, visit the Stellenbosch 360 office in town for further information on excursions, guides and itineraries available.

For further information on what to see and do, eat and drink, and how to get the most out of your time in the Western Cape Winelands, visit the Stellenbosch Travel website , part of the ‘Stellenblog’ project of which I was a part of to come and promote the variety of the region.
