ONLY TWO school grade exemptions per team will be allowed for players who are in the Grade 7 who turn 14 years old before May 1st, 2022.However, those players must be born on/after January 1, 2008 to be eligible.

RICH STIEHL

Director of it & operations.

Rich Stiehl is the Director of IT and Operations for MVP International. Rich is the essential guy behind the scenes that helps to make all of the moving pieces, technology, and infrastructure work smoothly. Rich is also the Director the MVP Baseball School where he runs the operations for hundreds of young ball players and 35+ teams. After decades in the corporate world managing large-scale IT projects, Rich enjoys being able to connect his passion for baseball, family, and travel with his professional skills. Rich and his family have been traveling with MVP International since 2015 when they went on their first trip to Central Europe. Their family has been one of the most well-traveled families in the MVP community as they have been on 8 trips including Central Europe, Spain, Germany, Italy, The Netherlands, The Dominican, Puerto Rico, and the Caribbean Cruise.

ELI FACENDA

Chief enrollment officer.

Eli’s background in international sports tours goes back to 2009. After going on back-to-back undefeated trips to the Dominican Republic and Italy under Coach Pudge, the travel bug had bit Eli and he was hooked. Eli went on to play Division I baseball at Lehigh University.

While there he majored in Finance with a minor in Spanish, and was also afforded the opportunity to do a semester abroad in Barcelona, Spain.

It was during that semester abroad that he re-connected with the MVP International team and slowly began to support the organization. Eli continued to work for MVP International part time as a senior at Lehigh University and became MVP International’s first full-time employee upon graduation in 2015. Since then Eli has helped grow the organization and currently oversees all enrollment operations and trip concepts.

Eli has developed a passion for traveling and the travel industry, which has led him to visit over 35 countries. Eli currently resides in Arlington, VA.

JASON “COOP” CONLEY

Basketball recruiting director.

Jason “Coop” Conley is the Senior Vice President of the ABL. He began his college career at Virginia Military Institute where he was named Southern Conference Player of the year, Southern Conference Freshman of the year, and to the Southern Conference 1st Team.  In 2002, Jason was the NCAA Scoring champion and became the First Freshman in NCAA History to Lead Country in Scoring. After transferring to Missouri in 2003, he was named to Big 12 All-Newcomer Team and Big 12 All-Academic Team.

After graduating with his bachelor’s degree from Missouri in 2005, Jason went on to a 13-year professional career in Europe. (Germany, Austria, Finland, and Romania) While in Europe, Jason was named an All-Star in multiple countries and won a championship.

Jason devotes his life to youth coaching and basketball skills development. Every summer, he takes youth teams to Europe, Asia, and South America to compete in international tournaments.

O’KELLY MCWILLIAMS

General counsel.

Having joined MVP International as a traveler many times in the past, O’Kelly brings a perspective that is highly valued by the MVP International Athletics team and organization.

O’Kelly advises US and international clients on a wide range of business and employment law matters. He has extensive experience handling employment aspects of M&A and other corporate transactions as well as employment disputes and compensation issues.

O’Kelly has collaborated with some of the world’s leading companies and emerging businesses to mitigate their risks and advance their business plans.

He also serves on the Board of Trustees for the Virginia Retirement System — a nearly $80 billion pension plan — and participates on its Benefits & Actuarial, Audit and Compliance, Defined Contribution Plan, and Administration and Personnel committees.

To help organizations manage employee relationships and reduce their liability, O’Kelly works with them to establish industry-specific employment policies and to provide board members and managers with compliance and employment training. He also conducts compensation audits to mitigate risks related to pay disparity issues.

MARK “PUDGE” GJORMAND

Visionary & founder.

Coach Pudge is known by both the Virginia High School Baseball community as well as the national baseball community for bringing a high level of energy, charisma, and absolute passion to the field, every single day. With decades of accomplishments, 2 State Championships, coach Pudge is currently the 4th winningest baseball coach in Virginia High School Baseball history with nearly 400 wins.

Coach Pudge’s story begins back in 2008, when Coach Pudge was given the opportunity to bring a local team abroad for a tournament. After much hesitation and some convincing by his supportive wife, Beth, Coach Pudge got his first taste of international baseball on a trip to Germany with some of the top players in the DMV area. After experiencing the eye-opening impact the game of baseball was having around the world, he was all-in.

Coach Pudge went on a few more trips before he started to brainstorm how he could share these experiences that were transforming not only his life, but also those of hundreds of athletes and families that were joining him on the trips, with more athletes. He had a vision to reach the lives of thousands across a variety of sports with these unforgettable escapades.

In 2012, Coach Pudge contacted now business partner, Matt Foley, to help turn his dream into a reality. While Coach Pudge handled the sports side of things, Foley handled the business side, and the partnership was formed. Since then, Coach Pudge has continued to share the vision with which he founded the company with hundreds of athletes from the DMV area and also directs all things related to baseball.

This thing is just getting started!  Coach Pudge also operates MVP Baseball School, the MVP Terps, and MVP Summer Camp. He currently resides in Reston, VA with his wife, Beth, and 3 kids Samantha (20), Josh (18), and Trevor (14).

President & Co-Founder

Matt played for Coach Pudge, graduating in 2003 and racking up a laundry list of awards, both in the JMHS record books as well as at the state level. After 4 successful years, 2 regional championships and a state championship at Madison, Foley went on to catch at Virginia Tech for 4 years.

Although Foley spent a few years in the corporate world, he was drawn back to the game as a coach, and he enjoyed staying connected to the baseball community. When he was approached by Coach Pudge in 2012 to form what is now MVP International Athletics, he saw it as an opportunity to further apply what he had learned in the corporate world in order to build something very special.

Since then, Foley has served as President of MVP International and oversees the business operations, which under his leadership runs smoothly.

Foley also has a focus in the real estate field and currently resides in Arlington, VA with his wife Meghan and 2 kids, Bryce (3) Blake (1).

TONYA BROGAN

Travel director.

Tonya attended travel school in VA and then worked in Virginia and Colorado, as a Leisure Travel Specialist, specializing in Disney, Caribbean and Hawaii. Tonya planned total vacation packages and enjoyed playing a major role in helping her clients turn their dreams into a reality, as well as help them create memories and friendships that would last a lifetime.

As a member of a military family, Tonya was afforded the opportunity of being stationed in several areas throughout the United States as well as overseas. She had the pleasure of being stationed in Italy for 3 years with her husband Bob and their two children, Makayla and Noah. They lived in Vicenza, which is about an hour west of Venice. While stationed in Italy, the family traveled throughout Europe and cruised the Mediterranean on several occasions. They did not return to the US until their three-year military assignment was complete because Europe had so much to offer and they wanted to take full advantage!

A few years later after returning to Virginia, Tonya and her family joined MVP International on the 2017 Germany Baseball Tour and had a blast! It was then that the MVP team realized she would be a great addition to the team.

Tonya absolutely loves to travel, meet new friends and to help others achieve their dreams…For all of these reasons and more, Tonya is an absolute perfect fit for MVP International!

OPERATIONS & FLIGHT MANAGER

Born and raised in Pittsburgh, Tara became an avid sports fan at a young age. She went on to play softball and basketball in college while earning degrees in Business Management and Psychology. Her husband, Ryan, was in the Air Force for 9 years when they decided to settle in Northern Virginia with their three children, Marly, Kyle, and Tatum.

Tara has been active in her three children’s lives, managing sports schedules, school activities, and volunteering to coach various basketball and softball teams over the last 20 years. Tara met Coach Pudge while their son, Kyle, was in little league and quickly formed a relationship that has lasted over 10 years. MVP has been a major part of their lives, with Ryan coaching several teams, and Kyle playing for MVP and for Coach Pudge at Madison HS. Tara and her family have gone on five international trips to Germany, Italy, Puerto Rico (twice), and the Dominican Republic. The MVP International trips were such a unique experience and she is excited to join the team to help others have the same incredible experience!

DANA DOUGHERTY

Client relations manager.

Dana attended Penn State University where she received a bachelors’ degree in Hotel, Restaurant and Institutional Management.  She moved to the Washington DC area upon graduation and pursued a career with Hyatt Hotels. Having a strong desire to travel, Dana took a job as a Director with an Independent Meeting Planning Company and worked with Corporations and Associations to plan and facilitate their conferences ranging from 100 – 1500 attendees.

While taking time off from her career to raise three sons, Dana followed her new found passions of health and fitness and working with children. She has substituted for Arlington Public Schools since 2008 as well as held several volunteer roles gaining both community and state level recognition. These roles include being a member of the Arlington Public Schools Health Advisory Board, Whole Child Working Group and Healthy Community Action Team, serving a variety of board member roles on elementary and middle school PTA as well as Arlington Little League and being a member of the Action for Healthy Kids Tri-State Coalition. She was awarded Arlington Public Schools Volunteer of the Year award in 2016 and the Virginia Governors Outstanding Adult Volunteer award in 2018 for her efforts.

Navigating her own boys through the world of sports, she has witnessed first hand the amazing experiences, opportunities and lasting memories travel ball has given them. After taking an MVP trip with her family in 2019 to Italy, she realized she could fulfill all of her passions and she joined our team. She loves having the opportunity to engage in travel, sports & culture and to work closely with individuals, athletes and families to create moments they will never forget!

JASON MCMAHON

Jason is a native to Vienna, VA and is rooted in Youth and High School Baseball around the area. He has coached multiple travel, little league and high school teams and is currently an assistant varsity coach at Marshall High School in Falls Church, VA. He played for Coach Pudge in the mid 90’s and went on to George Mason University where he red-shirted for one season with the Patriots.

After college, Jason found himself working with a direct marketing company where he became an Account Manager handling day to day sales and reporting from multiple inbound and outbound call centers around the United States and Canada. He was in constant communication with high level clients ensuring their direct marketing campaigns were a success.

With a quick move to Roanoke, VA Jason became the Fly Fishing Technical Advisor for The Orvis Company. He spent his days on the phone giving customers product information and providing customer service and sales support. He learned the value of customer relations and the importance of building trust and confidence to ensure that each customer was treated with dignity and respect.

Eventually, Jason moved back to Northern Virginia accepting a retail position with Orvis. Within a few years he became the Fishing Manage at the Arlington, VA location. He built lasting relationships with customers that continue today. Jason’s passion for fly fishing has taken him across the United States and he has competed in several fishing competitions that were featured on the Outdoor Channel.

Jason is excited to join the MVP International team and provide customers the support needed to make their arrangements as stress free as possible.

SIMON ROBERTS

Hockey director/gm.

Coach Simon Roberts brings decades of international hockey experience to the MVP International hockey program. As Director of Ice Hockey, Coach Roberts has brought international Ice Hockey opportunities to the DMV community. Along with being the bench boss of several Tier 1 hockey programs, including the Washington Little Capitals, he’s also also been involved with USA Hockey Player Development Camps and participated as an Affiliate coach with the NTDP.

With a background in Strength & Conditioning, coach Roberts also works with the Washington Capitals Player Development & Training camps.

Coach Roberts also grew up in various places around the world and brings a cultural tone to the program that is highly valued by the MVP team. Coach Roberts led his first tour with MVP International in 2018 to Central Europe with a group of 16u players and families. With the amazing experience gained, Coach Roberts has ambitiously contributed to bring new opportunities to the Ice Hockey community at large. Coach Roberts resides in Reston, VA with his wife Mary and their Son, Colin

MATT WOJCEICHOWSKI

Enrollment coordinator.

Originally from Houston, Texas, Matt moved to Northern Virginia at the age of 7. He played 4 years of Varsity baseball at South Lakes High School earning 1 st team all-district 3 times, 1 st team all-region, 1 st team all-state, and 2 nd team all-met. From there, Matt went on to play 2 years of Junior College baseball at Chesapeake College before finishing out his final two years of baseball and academics at Roanoke College, where he graduated with a bachelor’s degree in Business Administration.

During a gap year in his college journey, Matt served as an assistant coach at South Lakes. Since then, Matt has coached with the MVP Organization for the last 3 years, but has been helping out with camps and other baseball lessons for the past 5.

Matt’s passion for baseball has allowed him many possibilities that he never knew existed. During Summer 2019, he traveled as a Player/Coach on our inaugural Caribbean Cruise. Matt describes it as being “one of the best experiences he’s had in his entire life,” and that going on that trip made him “truly buy in to what is going on at MVP International,” and he couldn’t be happier to be a part of our team.

EVE MENDOLIA

Non-profit & event planning.

Eve Mendolia earned her BA in Theatre Arts from Hofstra University and her Master of Science in Early Childhood Education from Hunter College in NYC.  She has been teaching for over 18 years and is currently teaching in Arlington Public Schools. She is currently the Montessori Public School of Arlington’s Teacher of the Year.

As such, we are running a combination of Amateur Round Robin and Open / Pro Double Elimination formats. Amateur events will be Round Robin format. Events with 8 or fewer teams will play round robin and use tie breakers within the round robin to determine Gold, Silver, and Bronze finishers. If there are 9 or more teams in a bracket, we will break the bracket into two pools with playoffs of the top two teams in each pool. The teams winning their pools will play for Gold/Silver and the 2nd place teams in each pools will play for Bronze. Our goal is for brackets or pools of 4 teams will play best 2 out of 3 games to 11, win by 2. Round robin brackets or pools with 5 or 6 teams will play single games to 15, win by 2. Brackets or pools with 7 or 8 teams will play single games to 11, win by 2. Playoff games for Medals will be best two out of three to 11, win by 2. If an event has less than 4 teams, that event may be combined with a same skill bracket that has an adjacent age group. Pro and Senior Pro will be Double Elimination. . The Open Pro and Senior Open Pro events are eligible to players rated 4.0 and above. These events will run with a traditional double elimination format, with a team able to come back around to the gold medal match via the loser's bracket. These matches will be played best 2 out of 3 to 11 win by 2 in the winner's bracket and single games to 15 win by 2 in the loser's bracket. The bronze and gold medal matches will be best 2 out of 3 to 11, win by 2. True Pros (with a 5.0 rating) have priority for these Open Brackets. Amateurs are welcome to sign-up for this bracket so long as both partners have a minimum of a 4.0 rating on one of the major ratings platforms (WPR, UTPR, DUPR). The Tournament Director reserves the right to remove any teams that do not meet this requirement and place them on the wait list and/or work with them to get them properly placed in other brackets. Note on format and schedule changes: The Tournament Director reserves the right to change format and schedule based on participation, weather conditions, schedule disruptions, etc. with the goal of treating every player as fairly as we can. We are purposely building into the schedule a weather make-up day for Sunday January 28th. Registered and paid players that do not have a registered and paid partner(s) will be moved to a wait list if the division in which a spot is being held is filled with fully registered and paid teams. Inclement Weather Policy This is an outdoor event. If weather or any other unforeseen circumstance occurs, we will do all we can to play matches. Our options include running events with fewer games or points per game, scheduling make-up play for later the same day (including into the evening hours), and utilizing Holua or other nearby courts to make-up matches on later days. We have built into our schedule a weather make-up day on Sunday 1/28 as a buffer for these scenarios. If brackets are in mid play when a weather or unforeseen circumstance occurs the situation will be evaluated on a case by case basis to determine if the bracket may be finished or if winners may be determined. Typical Kona Weather in January The weather in January in Kona is glorious with high temperates in the low 80s, and on average only 2 days of rain each month. January is the coolest month of the year in Kona, with also the lowest humidity (normally averaging 28% in January). January averages around 72% of days with sunny or partly cloudy skies. This is why Holua Resort in Kailua Kona is one of the best places in the world to plan a pickleball vacation!

Health & Safety

Health, Safety Advisories, and Behavior Rules Hawaii can be very sunny with a high amount of UV energy hitting players, courts, and equipment. Please protect yourself with sunscreen, keep to the shade while not playing (especially in the middle of the day), and wear sun protective clothing. Bring Reef-Safe sunscreen to help protect our local fish, reefs, and ocean habitats. The weather combined with athletic endeavors mean you are risk for dehydration, and electrolyte depletion. Start your hydration regimen the day before you arrive to the courts, and continue your regimen non-stop while playing. Hydration breaks will be allowed during match play. If you feel light-headed, dizzy, exhausted, experience any sort of sudden rise in heart rate, or a sudden drop in heart rate, stop play immediately. We will have safety personnel onsite to assess your situation and help you seek medical attention if requested. The Hawaii Open is run with the simple philosophy that we all should give Aloha in order to receive Aloha. That means treating everyone (players, staff, volunteers, referees, vendors, sponsors, spectators) with respect. We will not tolerate in any way confrontational behaviors, unwanted advances, harassment, vulgar language, or any other behavior we deem to be inconsistent with the Aloha spirit. We reserve the right to deny service to anyone, and remove from the Holua Resort premises anyone whose behavior threatens anyone else, or anyone who violates our expectations for Aloha Spirit and Sportsmanship.

The Prize Pool for the 2024 Hawaii Open is a total of $9,900 distributed as follows: Open Pro - $5,400 Spread equally over the three Open Pro brackets (Open Mens, Open Womens, and Open Mixed). Each of these three brackets will payout as follows: - First Place Team Shares $900 - Second Place Team Shares $600 - Third Place Team shares $300 Sr. Pro - $4,500 Spread equally over the three Open Pro brackets (Sr. Open Mens, Sr. Open Womens, and Sr. Open Mixed). Refund Policy

Cancellation Policy January 10, 2024 is our cancellation deadline. No refunds after this date Cancellation refunds (for cancellations requested before midnight January 10th, 2024) are subject to a $25 withdrawal fee. If you withdraw before the CANCELLATION DEADLINE ABOVE, you will be issued a full of registration, event, and camp fees, less a $25 processing fee deduction. Purchases of apparel and donations to Family Support Hawai'i cannot be refunded. We will arrange to ship you your 2024 Hawaii Open shirt if you purchased one and cancelled after registration. There will be no refunds after the January 10th cancellation deadline except as noted below. After January 10th, we will allow special refund accommodations (less the $25 withdrawal fee) under the following circumstances: PRIOR TO CHECK-IN – 100% of registration fee and event fees (excludes service fees): - Injury/Illness – doctor's note required - Jury Duty – jury notice required - Partner Drops Out and there is no available wait list player to replace them. We will make every reasonable effort to safely conduct the event on the dates listed, and we have budgeted a full weather make-up day for Sunday January 28th, 2024. If you wish to protect yourself in the event of a weather related cancellation, we are offering Weather Event Cancellation Insurance for $20.00 during the registration process . The Weather Event Cancellation Insurance must be purchased by January 10th, 2024. This insurance will provide you with protection should your event be cancelled and we are unable to reschedule your event before the end of January 28, 2024. 1 killed, several injured in shuttle bus accident at Honolulu cruise terminal

O ne person is dead and several others injured after a shuttle bus rammed into them at a Honolulu cruise terminal in Hawaii on Friday, according to police and Carnival Cruise Line.

The cruise port bus was dropping off people near a pier when a bystander informed the driver that the bus was moving forward. The driver jumped into the driver’s seat and tried to stop the bus, but pressed the gas pedal instead of the brakes, police said.

“Somebody screamed, and then I looked over and the bus hit into the crowd. It just kept going until it hit the wall there,” witness Janet Lightfoot told CNN affiliate KHNL/KGMB.

The bus struck concrete barriers and 11 people, five of whom were transported to hospitals for treatment, according to the police. One woman died from her injuries, while the others were listed in good condition and have since been discharged, police said. Six people refused treatment.

“This is sad case where their Hawaiian vacation turned into a tragedy,” said Jessica Lani Rich of the Visitor Aloha Society of Hawaii, a nonprofit that is assisting the victims.

Carnival Cruise Line said nine guests from the Carnival Miracle ship were among those involved in the accident, including the woman who died. The Illinois woman was celebrating her wedding anniversary with a family cruise, Rich said.

“She was traveling with her husband, who was also injured and is expected to recover,” the cruise line said.

The woman’s husband was taken to the emergency room along with several other family members, the Visitor Aloha Society of Hawaii told CNN.

Police said investigations are ongoing, but so far speed does not appear to be an issue in the accident. “It is unknown if drugs or alcohol were contributing factors to this collision,” the Honolulu Police Department said.

CNN has reached out to the shuttle bus company and is awaiting a response.

This illegal Hawaii hike has caused controversy for years, now it's being removed for good

Starting this month, one of Hawaii’s most dangerous and controversial hikes will be permanently removed.

Oahu’s Stairway to Heaven trail, comprising 3,922 slick steel steps that ascend the narrow ridges of the Koolau Mountain Range, has been illegal to hike since 1987. Although trespassing cost hikers a $1,000 citation, thousands still attempted the trek for an Edenic view of the island. Social media helped propel the trail, also known as Haiku Stairs, into popularity. 

The process of dismantling the “aging, narrow metal stair structure” will begin with the removal of over 600 stair modules, according to a press release by the City and County of Honolulu. The entire project is expected to take six months.

During the Wednesday announcement, Honolulu Mayor Rick Blangiardi said the removal is “long overdue.” 

“This decision that was made was predicated upon our respect for the people who live in and around the entrance to the stairs, our respect for our aina (land), and our respect for both the future and the past history of the culture of the Haiku community,” he added.

The City and County of Honolulu unanimously passed Resolution 21-154 in 2021 to remove the stairs as an effort to increase the quality of life for the nearby residents, improve public safety and preserve the natural beauty of the lush Haiku Valley.

Honolulu City Council Vice Chair Esther Kiaaina, who introduced the resolution, called the project “a new chapter for Haiku Valley” and the collective decision to eradicate the stairs is “for the good of the community” during the press conference , according to Hawaii New Now. 

"After decades of the community asking the government for relief, we had an obligation to make a decision and a decision that I knew would displease some people but at the end I had to look at a lot of variable factors," Kiaaina, who has been involved in discussions around land management for Haiku Stairs for over two decades, told USA TODAY. She called it "a hard decision."

For decades, residents who live near the stairs have been complaining of disturbances by hikers, who often hopped fences and trespassed onto private property during the middle of the night to catch the sunrise. Some hikers blocked people’s driveways and vandalized or urinated on people’s property, the resolution said. 

Between August 2017 and March 2020, police officers turned away 11,427 people attempting to hike the stairs by passing through the surrounding neighborhoods, according to the resolution. 

With its steep cliffs and unpredictable weather conditions, the trail is highly dangerous. Any mistake can result in a helicopter rescue, although there have not been any fatalities on record. Between 2010 and 2022, more than 188 people were rescued from the hike – paid for by taxpayers. With helicopter rescues costing thousands of dollars, a bill was introduced last year to make people pay for their own rescues, but it has not passed .    

Along with deconstructing the stairs, the project also includes the restoration of native plants in impacted areas. The project will also preserve some of the structure to honor the stair’s historical significance as a World War II military access route. 

"The wonderment is still there, that's the natural beauty of the mauna (mountain) and Haiku Valley," Kiaaina said. "The stairs itself served a purpose for U.S. national security purposes and that purpose is done. Separate from what people think, I feel part of the healing is for the mauna (mountain) and for the valley itself."

The city stressed that the stairs will become even more perilous during construction and “present an immediate safety threat” to anyone who may try to sneak in a final hike.

It’s been a while since the last big casino demolition on the Strip, but another may be in the works. Following the closing of the Tropicana, a 10-foot “razing wall” is being built around the property, with a demolition tentatively scheduled for October. The demolition could include an implosion of the two towers, “subject to permitting and further changes.” If it transpires, it will be the first Strip casino to be imploded since the Riviera in 2016.

Movie studio: Plans have been approved for a $1.8 billion movie studio and mixed-use development on the west side of town. The joint venture between Howard Hughes Holdings and Sony Entertainment will in some way involve actor Mark Wahlberg and will be called Summerlin Production Studios. In addition to the studio, plans call for the complex to include retail, restaurants and office space. No timeline has been divulged.

Airport jackpot: So much for the belief that the slots never pay off at the airport. A player at Reid International hit for $782,467 on a Wheel of Fortune Gold Spin Triple Red Hot 7s machine. It wasn’t reported if the player was on the way in or out of town.

Mini-tourney down: It was a lot of fun while it lasted, but the $25 blackjack mini-tournaments at the Downtown Grand have been discontinued after just a little more than a year of running on Thursday afternoons. There are currently no low-buy-in gambling tournaments in Las Vegas.

Akebono, First Foreign-Born Sumo Grand Champion, Dies at 54

Born in Hawaii, he moved to Japan in 1988 and won 11 grand championships. His success drove a resurgence in the sport’s popularity.

Taro Akebono, a Hawaii-born sumo wrestler who became the sport’s first foreign grand champion and helped to fuel a resurgence in its popularity in the 1990s, has died in Tokyo. He was 54.

He died of heart failure in early April while receiving care at a hospital, according to a statement from his family that was distributed by the United States military in Japan on Thursday.

When he became Japan’s 64th yokozuna, or grand champion sumo wrestler, in 1993, he was the first foreign-born wrestler to achieve the sport’s highest title in its 300-year modern history. He went on to win a total of 11 grand championships, and his success set the stage for an era during which foreign-born wrestlers dominated the top levels of Japan’s national sport .

Akebono, who was 6-foot-8 and 466 pounds when he was first named yokozuna at 23, towered over his Japanese opponents. Painfully shy outside the dohyo, as the sumo ring is known, he was known for using his height and reach to keep opponents at a distance.

Akebono’s rivalry with the Japanese brothers Takanohana and Wakanohana, both grand champions, was a major driver of sumo’s renewed popularity in the 1990s. During the opening ceremony for the 1998 Winter Olympics in Nagano, Japan, Akebono demonstrated the sumo ring entrance ritual for an international audience, commanding the arena with his hulking physique and captivating stare.

Taro Akebono was born Chad George Ha’aheo Rowan in Waimanalo, Hawaii, in 1969. He played basketball in high school and briefly at Hawaii Pacific University before moving to Japan in 1988 at the invitation of a fellow Hawaiian wrestler who had become a trainer.

Knowing nothing about Japan and speaking almost no Japanese, he began living and training at a sumo stable governed by strict hierarchy, cooking and cleaning for more experienced wrestlers. Soon he was charting a meteoric rise through the sport’s ranks, dominating with his size.

“We were just brute strength,” he said in a later interview , referring to himself and his fellow wrestlers from Hawaii in the 1990s. “We won fast or we lost fast. We weren’t too technical.”

In 1992, the Yokozuna Promotion Council, which decides which wrestlers are worthy of sumo’s top honor, denied it to another Hawaiian, saying that no foreigner could possess the dignity befitting the title. The decision prompted allegations of racism and raised questions about the council’s selection process. Only a handful of wrestlers hold the title at the same time, and they are selected through a vote from candidates who have won two consecutive tournaments.

A year later, just five years after arriving in Japan and joining the sport, Akebono broke through that barrier.

He later said in interviews that he rarely considered his nationality in the ring, thinking of himself as a sumo wrestler first and foremost. He became a naturalized Japanese citizen in 1996, and changed his name to Taro Akebono. His chosen sumo name, Akebono, means “dawn” in Japanese.

“I wasn’t thinking, ‘I’m an American, I’m going to go out there, plant my flag in the middle of the ring and take on the Japanese,’” he told The New York Times in 2013.

He gained acceptance and popularity in the sumo world in part because people in Japan appreciated his devotion to the sport, even though, in his early competitions, cheers from the crowd were far louder for his Japanese-born rivals.

“He makes me forget he is a foreigner because of his earnest attitude toward sumo,” Yoshihisa Shimoie, editor of Sumo magazine, said in 1993 . By the early 2000s, dozens of the ranked wrestlers were foreign , including Mongolians, a Georgian and an Argentine.

According to his family, Akebono is survived by his wife, Christine Rowan; a daughter, Caitlyn; and two sons, Cody and Connor.

In 2001, he retired from the sport at 31, citing chronic knee problems. He went on to train younger wrestlers, and he also competed in kickboxing, professional wrestling and mixed martial arts.

“I am retiring,” he said at the time, “with a feeling of great gratitude for being given the chance to become a yokozuna and experience something open to only very few people.”

Record $517K raised to empower future leaders in travel industry management

The University of Hawaiʻi at Mānoa Shidler College of Business ’ School of Travel Industry Management ( TIM school) held its 22nd annual Celebrate a Legacy in Tourism gala on April 10, at the Sheraton Waikīkī. Also marking the college’s 75th anniversary, this year’s fundraiser raised a record-breaking $517,000 thanks to the generous support of the hospitality and Hawaiʻi business community.

“We’re proud to recognize Mufi Hannemann, Holden Lim and Kyo-ya as trailblazers in their industry, who continue to inspire current and future graduates,” said Shidler College Dean and First Hawaiian Bank Chair of Leadership Management Vance Roley. “Further, it’s incredible that over half a million dollars has been raised to support student scholarships. We applaud the efforts of our volunteer table sales committee and the 2024 honorees to greatly amplify our impact.”

2024 honorees

Celebrate a Legacy in Tourism honors individuals who have made significant and long-term contributions to Hawaiʻi ’s tourism industry. This year, the Legacy in Tourism Award was presented to Muliufi “Mufi” Hannemann; Holden Lim, BBA ’89 was inducted into the TIM Alumni Hall of Honor; and Kyo-ya Hotels & Resorts, LP received the Distinguished Service Award.

Hannemann was honored with the Legacy in Tourism Award for his vast contributions to the tourism industry and dedication to fostering the development of students. As president and CEO of the Hawaiʻi Lodging & Tourism Association, chair of the Hawaiʻi Tourism Authority board, and board member of the U.S. Travel and Tourism Advisory Board, Hannemann has played a pivotal role in shaping the state’s tourism landscape. His founding of the Pacific Century Fellows and service to the TIM school as an advisory council member further showcases his commitment to nurturing future leaders.

Lim, president of Hospitality Link International, Inc. , was presented with the TIM Alumni Hall of Honor award, recognizing his professional achievements and continued support of the TIM school. Lim’s career in the hospitality industry began in 1989 at the Westin St. Francis in San Francisco and over the years, he contributed significantly to firms like HVS International and Sonnenblick-Goldman Company, orchestrating over $4.5 billion in real estate transactions. Lim remains engaged with the TIM school, currently serving on the TIM Alumni Association as secretary.

Kyo-ya Hotels & Resorts, LP , was recognized with the Distinguished Service Award for their contributions to Hawaiʻi ’s tourism industry and the community, providing many hours of service and volunteer hours to various local causes. Kyo-ya expanded its footprint across Hawaiʻi and California, including iconic properties like The Royal Hawaiian and Sheraton Maui. Additionally, Kyo-ya serves as a pipeline for hospitality careers, hiring numerous graduates from UH and mentoring high school and college students, ensuring the continuity of generations in the islands.

UH gala honors Hawaii tourism leaders, raises record $517K for scholarships

HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) - The University of Hawaii at Manoa’s School of Travel Industry Management honored leaders in Hawaii Tourism at the Sheraton Waikiki on Wednesday.

Holden Lim, the president of Hospitality Link international, was inducted into the Alumni Hall of Honor, and former Honolulu Mayor Mufi Hanneman — president and CEO of the Hawaii Lodging and Tourism Association — received the Legacy in Tourism Award.

“This is a school that has trained, educated so many of our leaders in the past, and some, many of them have taken great positions of prominence in the industry,” Hannemann said.

“It’s not about me, it’s about the industry, all coming together.”

On Thursday, state senators will hear testimony and discuss whether to confirm Hannemann as chair of the Hawaii Tourism Authority’s board of directors.

Meanwhile, officials explained the purpose of the 22nd annual “Celebrate a Legacy in Tourism” gala. The event raises money to support future leaders in travel industry management. UH said it raised a record-breaking $517,000 to help support student scholarships.

The gala also marked the 75th anniversary of UH’s Shidler College of Business, in which the School of Travel Industry Management falls under.
