Petrel

The Motor Catamaran Petrel redefines luxury. Her modern design brings you state-of-the-art equipment and offers greater stability than traditional vessels, whilst providing you with levels of comfort and opulence not previously seen. Petrel will take you to wonderful settings smoothly, quietly and in grand style, her twin-hull design cutting through swells in a way that single-hull vessels can’t.

With never more than 16 clients on board, Petrel’s 10-person crew ensures that you will receive unrivalled levels of service. There are superb communal areas for relaxation and entertainment, including a fitness area and a library, and a beautiful dining room and sumptuous lounge. The beautiful upper-deck sun terrace features a jacuzzi and is home to the fully stocked bar featuring local beers and quality South American wines, as well as premium spirits. Although luxurious, the ambience aboard Petrel is friendly and relaxed - the perfect environment to relax in between your on-shore adventures.

Private accommodation aboard Petrel sets a new standard for Galápagos. Every stateroom features a private balcony and stunning decor, complemented by the highest quality furnishings and equipment. For the ultimate in luxury choose one of the double suites, offering over 460 sqf of beautiful, light-filled space to call your own. All staterooms are equipped with modern, powerful showers and thoughtful touches abound such as quality hair dryers and beautiful toiletries.

Every member of Petrel’s crew has been selected to ensure that your needs are catered for, and your safety and comfort are always their priority. Petrel’s resident bi-lingual National Park naturalists will help you to make the very most of everything you will see and experience of the region’s stunning wildlife. For truly unforgettable “up-close” adventures, Petrel also carries kayaks, wetsuits and snorkelling gear - snorkelling with sea lions is an experience not to be missed.

The best way to see everything the Galápagos has to offer while travelling in total luxury, Petrel is one of the most sought-after boats on galapatours.com and recommended for those who value quality and the finer things in life. Petrel really does set a new standard for luxury in Galápagos, and we love the amazing size of the suites on board. The staff are superb and they make all their guests feel very special. Rarely for the Galápagos, this is a family-owned boat.

Food & Drinks on board the Petrel

The food on our Galapágos Cruises is among the very best you will find in South America. Most of the on-board chefs are internationally trained and have prior experience working in the best hotels and restaurants in Ecuador and indeed around the world.

You can expect a first-class selection of food, including a good variety of fresh fruits and vegetables, locally sourced poultry and fish/seafood, rice and pasta dishes. Most boats will always include some typical Ecuadorian dishes on the menu during your cruise. If you have specific dietary requirements then these can usually be accommodated by the chef providing you have given advance notice. Please make sure you tell us about any allergies or dietary requirements you have at the time you book with us. If you leave it until you arrive at the dockside, then it may well be impossible to accommodate your needs.

Most boats serve a range of options at meal times in a relaxed buffet-style. At the first class and luxury end of the market, some boats have more formal dining where you will be served at your seat. However the atmosphere is always relaxed on board our cruises, and never stuffy or formal.

At Galapatours we love and respect the pristine ecosystems and fascinating wildlife of the Galápagos Islands. To protect the archipelago, all vessels in Galápagos must have sophisticated water filtration systems, modern, efficient engines, and strict maintenance schedules to minimize pollution. Furthermore, The Galápagos National Park authority defines exact cruising routes that dictate which ships can visit which highlights at what day and time, as well as limiting passenger numbers.

Our commitment extends beyond the mandatory environmental standards for cruise vessels in the region: A portion of your trip price now contributes to our Conservation Project. This initiative empowers local communities to protect their territory, engage in reforestation, and prepare for long-term environmental stewardship. This way, your trip contributes to environmental protection and truly shows how travel can be a force for good! You can also play your part by traveling responsibly and following our Eco Guidelines during your stay. Click here to find out more about these guidelines, our commitment to sustainable tourism, and the Galápagos National Park rules.

Petrel Galapagos Cruise

Great! The crew - Gustavo Barba, our Galapagos National Park Naturalist, was fantastic! He made the trip fun and interesting for a wide range of ages - from my sixteen year olds to retirees on the trip. He had a great attitude, encyclopedic knowledge and seemed to know the best spots for everything from locating mating blue footed boobies to swimming with sharks, turtles and sea lions. Our Cruise Director, Jose, was warm and friendly, and loved to share his Ecuador with all of the guests. Captain Pedro Rocafuente and his crew were remarkable, in part because they maintained the boat in an immaculate condition, seemingly all at night when we were sleeping or when we were out on the multiple excursions each day. I am already missing Chef Carlos' wonderful cooking, which highlighted many Ecuadorean dishes, and despite a very active six days, I feel I gained weight. It may be expensive, but I feel I will likely only do a trip to the Galapagos once or twice in my life and this more than lived up to our expectations. A wonderful experience made possible by the fantastic crew, naturalist and facilities available on the Petrel.

Quelle: https://goo.gl/QHrZDL

Wonderful Time In A Wonderful Place We were very pleased with the boat, crew and fellow passengers. Morris was a very knowledgable guide and accomplished photographer/underwater videographer, as well as friendly and excellent english spoken. Carlos did a great job bartending and serving meals and spoke english well also. Almost all of the crew we had contact with could communicate at least somewhat in english and were very friendly/helpful. We had a great mix of people aboard (22 to 60's) from various countries/locations. Food was plentiful and varied. Our favorite were the two barbecue lunches on the top deck including the last lunch of grilled fish, octopus, lobster and prawns plus baked potatoes, salad, etc. After each excursion there was generally fresh juice and a snack waiting as well, such as chicken wings, empanadas, fried yucca with honey, etc. We did Itinerary A which went to many locations on Isabela island, Santa Cruz, South Plaza, North Seymour, Santa Fe and San Cristobal. Saw a wide variety of animals including blue footed boobies, sea lions, many types of iguanas, penguins, dolphins, rays, etc. Snorkeling 4 or 5 times was our favorite. Snorkeled with penguins, sea lions (santa fe had whole colony swimming with us), rays, sharks, dolphins, turtles. Galapatours also helped us with some information beforehand (what to bring, cultural differences etc), which made the trip completely perfect. I highly recommend the Petrel cruise!

Best Trip Ever Linda and I have returned from our trip. This was our best trip ever. The crew were all great; helpful, cheerful and informative. Eduardo was the director and very special. The guide, Harry, was terrific. And the ship was top-notch. We'd like to thank you for all your help. Also, thanks to galapatours. Everything went very smoothly for the whole time. Best Regards, Don

Quelle: https://goo.gl/NJZTPw

Ocean Spray

The Ocean Spray is one of the most impressive vessels you can board for your Galápagos cruising adventure. Built in 2011, this mega-catamaran is one of the fastest, most stable boats in the region and will whisk you from island to island with speed and great style. The friendly crew attends to your every need with warmth and dedication, and they make sure you have the right balance of unforgettable excursions and shameless relaxation. This may be a wonderful new boat, but it boasts some of the most experienced crew in the islands. Captain Pedro has over 45 years experience, with hotel manager Eduardo only just behind. Eduardo runs a beautiful operation with some nice touches. For example, 2 dinners on each trip will be served as an outdoor barbecue with cocktails to enjoy. For connoisseurs, there are some excellent Chilean and Argentinian wines available for between $40 and $60 - very reasonable for the quality. Stunning accommodation The Ocean Spray boasts some of the best suites in the Galápagos. Her large size means that every guest suite has its own private balcony, large and opulent en suite bathroom and enormous panoramic windows. Other luxurious touches we enjoy include fully carpeted bedrooms, luxury bed linens and toiletries and beautiful wood finishes throughout. Good to know: While the downstairs cabins can be either separated bed which can be joined to form a seemsless, queen-sized matress, the upstairs suites are full-blown king-sized beds that cannot be separated. A superb bonus for solo travelers: Ocean Spray has a single cabin that does not incur any additional single supplement. The communal areas on board are no less extravagant than the suites. There is a huge sun deck with a jacuzzi tub - perfect for sun-worshiping or star gazing. The boat’s lounge is simply stunning, and the decor, ambiance, and comfort puts many luxury hotels to shame. The intimate dining area serves as the perfect backdrop for some superb meals from our excellent chefs who offer a wide range of local and international cuisine using the freshest ingredients - seafood is always a specialty! Expert crew and guides Captain Pedro is one of the most experienced skippers in the region with over 45 years at sea. Making sure everything runs smoothly is Quality Control Manager Eduardo, who can also boast over 40 years experience in his field. Our bilingual guides help you to make the very most of your Galápagos experience. The communal lounge area is used to deliver fascinating introductions to the islands and to your excursions, and guides are always on hand to answer questions and give information. They really are a superb resource and it’s obvious they relish sharing their knowledge and love of the islands. The relaxing atmosphere of Ocean Spray is the perfect place to come back to and share your memories of the day, winding down in total comfort. Our Comments This large, fast boat never fails to impress us. The surroundings are superb and the highly experienced crew can’t ever do enough for you. We particularly like the stunning communal lounge saloon, and the view of the stars from the sun deck jacuzzi tub is one of the things you can’t forget. Her no-supplement single cabin also makes this THE boat for solo travelers to Galápagos.

endemichead1

The Endemic is an exquisitely crafted catamaran designed exclusively for the Galápagos Islands expedition. She has been designed to offer unrivalled luxury alongside sustainable operations, and has one of the best crew-to-guest ratios in the archipelago. Because she has been designed for Galápagos cruises and not converted from a general purpose design, Endemic offers remarkable features you can't find on other vessels, including stunning full height, full width panoramic windows and a private balcony for every suite. Thanks to her twin-hull design, she is much more stable on the water than traditional yachts, making her a perfect choice of Galápagos cruise vessel for those prone to motion sickness. Endemic's interiors have been designed in a modern style, and her decor makes the most of the huge amounts of natural light that enters the cabins and communal spaces. Accommodating a maximum of only 16 guests, her gorgeous cabins feature king-size beds (or two full singles, to your choice), as well as a mini lounge area. The en suite bathrooms are sumptuous, with spacious showers and the highest quality linens and eco-friendly toiletries. Every cabin suite features independent air conditioning controls, and plenty of storage. The design has been modelled on a home bedroom and not a hotel room, giving the accommodations a wonderfully comfortable and relaxed feel. This is a Galápagos cruise ship that instantly makes you feel at home. For those travelling as a family or in a group, be sure to inquire about suites on the upper deck. These all feature interconnecting doors, which means you can enjoy a huge amount of living space as a group and yet have privacy for sleeping. This makes an Endemic cruise perfect for families travelling with older children or young adults. The communal areas on Endemic have been designed with just as much thought and care. Beautiful natural finishes throughout reflect the light that spills in from the panoramic windows that line the indoor spaces. The dining room has a relaxing, informal layout, which carries over to the lounge area with its gorgeous sofas and armchairs. Uniquely, Endemic has a dedicated briefing area in the bow, which allows your expert naturalist guide to give you knowledgeable and intimate presentations about the flora and fauna of the islands and what you can expect to see on your next Galápagos cruise adventure. This area also doubles as a more intimate lounge area where you can enjoy some peaceful indoor relaxation. Outside, the experience is nothing short of magnificent. The main deck platform also doubles as a beautiful shaded terrace with comfortable seating, while the equivalent area in the upper deck is a little more exposed to the sun and has sofas and coffee tables to enjoy a cocktail or two as another exciting day of your Galápagos cruise turns to night. For sun worshipers and those who want to enjoy the best views in the Galápagos, the Endemic's "Sky Deck" will be perfect for you! Featuring a huge circular jacuzzi, luxurious loungers, a bar, barbecue and al fresco dining area, this is the perfect place to unwind and enjoy some equatorial sunshine. You can't truly say you have been on a Galápagos cruise unless you have watched sea lions play from a top-deck hot tub! Food on board is of the highest international standard. Despite the luxury that Endemic offers, the Galápagos has a relaxed vibe, and this is reflected in the service of delicious buffet-style breakfasts and lunches where you can help yourself to wonderful local and international dishes during your cruise. Dinners are a mixture of buffet or menu choices, and everything is prepared on board with the freshest local ingredients. All dietary requirements can be taken care of - simply notify us when you book. Endemic has a dedicated Service Officer who will make sure everything is taken care of to give you the best experience possible. With 11 crew for a maximum of 16 guests, you will enjoy unrivalled levels of service, and the crew have been hand-picked for their attention to detail and dedication to customer satisfaction. An Endemic Galápagos cruise means you'll be accompanied by a fully bilingual expert naturalist guide on all excursions, giving you the benefit of their immense knowledge and experience of these amazing islands and their habitats. Endemic offers a wide choice of itineraries. The operator has carefully planned six different options that really maximize the amount that you will be able to see during your Galápagos cruise. The itineraries have also been designed to easily allow you to combine two and create a superb "see it all" trip of a lifetime that doesn't repeat any visitor points or excursions. Unusually for a vessel of this class, Endemic also offers a selection of short Galápagos cruise itineraries for those who wish to enjoy a shorter time on the water, or who are combining a cruise with other accommodations on the islands. All on board equipment is first class, and guests can enjoy complimentary use of sea kayaks, paddle boards, snorkel masks, fins, and short or long wetsuits. You will also be given a re-usable water bottle and a buff to help protect you from the sun. An intimate and personal experience is guaranteed on all your excursions thanks to the small number of guests Endemic takes on each Galápagos cruise The Galápagos Endemic is a senior-friendly vessel that has relatively few stairs, cabins located on the most accessible deck, and public areas situated near the sleeping areas. Special accommodations, such as meals served in cabins, are possible. In some cases, special excursion options are available for those who do not wish to hike or swim. The attention to detail on this ship is amazing - her interiors are simply stunning, and completely up to date, as you'd expect from a purpose-built ship. Her crew are all keen to make a reputation as the best ship in the fleet, and this shows in the service you get here. We love the additional stability offered by such a large catamaran, and the additional space this design offers. The standout features for us are the floor-to-ceiling windows in your suite and the absolutely stunning Sky Deck. To cap it all, she has some of the most interesting itineraries in Galápagos cruising - her operators have put in a lot of effort to make sure your Endemic experience is breathtaking.

6 Day Galapagos Itinerary

Day 1: baltra island & north seymour island, north seymour island.

North Seymour Island was named after English nobleman Lord Hugh Seymour. Formed by uplifted submarine lava, the island is home to a huge colony of about 2,500 land iguanas and large populations of sea lions, blue-footed boobies, common noddies and frigatebirds. Along the coast it is possible to see land and marine iguanas and the biggest colony of Magnificent Frigatebirds.

Day 2: Isabela Island: Vicente Roca Point & Fernandina Island: Espinoza Point

Isabela Island is the largest of all the Galapagos Islands, about 120 km long, and is peculiarly shaped like a sea-horse! It is one of the few  islands that are populated. The last census that was taken estimated about 2,200 people living on the Southern part of the Island. The island was formed by 6 different shield volcanoes from North to South that erupted continuously, eventually joining together to form on entire land mass. Of all the islands in the archipelago, Isabela is the most active with the latest eruption coming from Wolf Volcano in May of 2015. There are lots of unique wildlife on Isabela such as the pink iguana, and more wild tortoises than any other island with a different type of species near each of the 6 volcanoes.

Isabela Island: Vicente Roca Point

On Vicente Roca Point the geological formations are simply outstanding and it is a great place to view various bird species such as blue-footed boobies, Nazca boobies, gulls, storm petrels, and brown noddy terns. Activities here are all done on the water by either dinghy or panga, or snorkeling. On this western part of the island the Cromwell Current provides cold water and many nutrients. Due to this it is possible to see various feeding frenzies of an assortment of animals such as whales, dolphins, sea lions, and marine birds diving. At times it may also be likely to see fur seals.

Fernandina Island: Espinoza Point

In Fernandina Island, no foreign species have ever invaded it and therefore it is one of the world’s most pristine island ecosystems. It is one of the most active islands and is the westernmost island in the archipelago. The volcano “La Cumbre” dominates the landscape with lava fields reaching the ocean. The Cromwell Current also flows on the west making the cold and nutrient-rich water an ideal habitat for the Galapagos Penguin and Flightless Cormorant that nests here.

Day 3: Isabela Island: Tagus Cove & Urbina Bay

Tagus Cove is located on the upper west part of the island and was named after and English war ship that used to pass the islands in the 1800’s. This was a famous spot for many pirates and sailors who have even left their names and the names of the ship inscribed on volcanic rock. There are many different characteristics of the island here from various volcanic activities such as large volcanic rocks or small little balls of petrified rain. On the hike the path leads to Darwin Lake with a tuff cone.

A bit more south of Tagus Cove is Urbina Bay. Urbina Bay is an interesting site due to the uplifts of the island caused by volcanic and tectonic activity. When it rose, so did the corals and reefs that were under the surface. You can still see them although they are beginning to deteriorate due to air exposure. There are chances of seeing giant tortoises, land iguanas, and more flightless cormorants near the coast.

Day 4: Isabela Island: Elizabeth Bay & Moreno Point

Elizabeth bay.

A visitor site on the way down to the southern parts of Isabela Island is Elizabeth Bay. There are a series of islets, a lagoon and mangroves surrounding it. The mangroves provide a great place to observe many birds and at the lagoon, it is possible to see sea turtles resting and feeding.

Moreno Point

On the South Western point of Isabela Island is Moreno Point. With striking black geological features, it is home to endemic species known only to the barren lava flows found here. Various activities are possible such as a hike, a panga ride to better see various seabirds, geological features, and snorkeling to view the vibrant underwater life.

Day 5: Isabela Island: Sierra Negra Volcano & Breeding Center

Sierra negra volcano.

Sierra Negra has two volcanoes located in the South of the Island and they are two of the oldest of all Isabela’s volcanoes. A hike will show different types of vegetation and geological zones and possibly inside the caldera where petrified lava is present. Volcano Chico is easier to reach and recent lava flows from the 70’s can even be walked on.

Breeding Center

Isabela Breeding Center is named after Arnaldo Tupiza. It is another area where Galapagos Tortoises are bred in order to later be released into the wild.

Day 6: Santa Cruz Island: Charles Darwin Station & Departure

Nowadays Santa Cruz is one of the most popular tourist sites. With a population of about 12,000 Galapagos natives, it has the longest paved road in the entire archipelago. One of the biggest conservation efforts is to eliminate all non-native plants and animals that are destroying native and endemic species on the island. There is no longer any volcanic activity but that does not mean there is no evidence. Santa Cruz means holy cross, but it’s English name comes from the British vessel – Indefatigable.

Charles Darwin Research Station conducts many different research projects and provides assistance to other researchers and governmental institutions and agencies, especially the Galapagos National Park. Many of the results are later published online, in magazines, and popular scientific journals. The research station also plays a big part in educating the community and public schools in Galapagos. There is also the longtime running Giant Tortoise restoration program that includes various stages of the giant tortoise from eggs, hatchlings and adults.

Your cruise has officially come to an end. We hope you enjoyed your Galapagos Cruise! We will now transfer you to your scheduled departure from Baltra Airport to mainland Ecuador. Safe travels!

Spaces Aboard The Petrel

As these young islands were cooling off some two million years later, certain species gradually began to arrive to the archipelago. It is speculated that these newcomers arrived in the Galapagos on large rafts of vegetation that broke off from the shores of Central and South America. Upon arriving in the archipelago, these species had to rapidly adapt to a radically new environment.

Rebecca Adventure Travel SOUTH PLAZA ISLAND GALAPAGOS

AM: South Plaza is the smallest island with a visitor center, but it is home to an amazing amount of diverse flora . Rebecca Adventure Travel Bartolome Island

AM: Sullivan Bay is located on Santiago Island . It is the ideal spot to see the Galapagos fur seal . Although there isn’t much wildlife here, the old lava formations with tuff cones and pyroclastic coni are worth a visit.

PM: Bartolomé Island is home to the famous Pinnacle Rock . It was named after James Sullivan, a friend and colleague of Charles Darwin. This island is the most photographed of all and was featured in the 2003 film Master and Commander. Pinnacle Rock was formed by magma expelled from an underwater volcano . The hot lava got cooled by the sea and the pieces exploded as they came into contact, thus creating this massive rock, with many layers of basalt. A small number of green sea turtles nest on the beach under this huge rock. Here, Galapagos penguins congregate and you can swim to see colorful schools of fish as well as curious sea lions .

Rebecca Adventure Travel DARWIN-BAY

AM: Darwin Bay is the result of a shield volcano in which one side of the caldera fell after years of erosion . This is the Galapagos’ only place where red-footed boobies are guaranteed to be found. Genovesa’s trees and bushes are home to over 200,000 red-footed boobies.

Rebecca Adventure Travel CARRION POINT GALAPAGOS

AM/PM: Carrión Point is not a place where you can land so you will either be able to go on a panga ride or go snorkeling . It is located on the northern coast of Santa Cruz, at the Itabaca Channel’s entrance . It is a protected lagoon of beautiful turquoise water .

Your tour is officially over. Hope you enjoyed your Galapagos Cruise! You will be transferred to the Baltra Airport for your departure flight to mainland Ecuador. Safe travels!

Here, encounter an array of marine life, from colorful fish to graceful seahorses and majestic rays , all thriving among vibrant coral colonies .

PM: Conclude your adventure at Post Office Bay , where an ingenious 18th-century postal system once operated. Sailors left letters in a wooden barrel, relying on the goodwill of fellow seafarers to deliver their messages back home. This system, built on trust and camaraderie among strangers, required no stamps or fees and created a unique sense of community among sailors .

4 Day - San Cristobal, Española, Floreana & Santa Cruz

itinerary map

Embarkation

AM: A Petrel representative will provide assistance upon arrival after passing through immigration and baggage claim. When ready, you will be transferred to the yacht.  You will then be shown to your cabin where you will have some time to settle in before the welcome briefing and lunch.

PM: San Cristobal is the fifth largest island in the Galapagos and lies farthest East. It is where Darwin first landed back in 1835 and where the first permanent settlements were founded. Today the main port Puerto Baquerizo Moreno is the capital of the Galapagos province and houses many government offices, the Ecuadorian Navy, and an airport with daily flights to the mainland of Ecuador. Conservation challenges the island faces include invasive plants like blackberry and guayaba and insects like the blackfly.

A visit to the David Rodriguez Breeding Center provides information about the origin and evolution of the giant tortoise and explains why the center is so vital in safeguarding the future of these incredible creatures. Walking through the trails of the reserve, you can see baby tortoises being reared in semi-natural conditions - a brilliant demonstration of the commitment the local people have to preserving the wildlife that makes the Galapagos so special.

Petrel (GG) - San Cristobal, Española, Floreana & Santa Cruz

Gardner Bay & Suarez Point

AM: Española is the southernmost island in the Galapagos, as well as the oldest. It is estimated to be about four million years old. Because it is so far away from the other islands it has the most endemic species. It is a wonderful opportunity for some great photography of endemic bird species that are found only on Española and awesome landscapes created by millions of years of erosion.

Visit one of the best beaches in the Galapagos. The white sandy beach is home to a large colony of friendly and playful sea lions. Three different types of finches can be seen. The Espanola Mockingbird is very friendly, but probably looking for food. At one point in time, tourists must have given it water or food, which taught them bad habits. The site is also where green sea turtles will come to nest their eggs between January and March.

PM: This is a phenomenal site where you will get to see many of Española Island’s endemic species. The trail will pass by the only Waved Albatross breeding site. If you are lucky, you might see a young albatross, take off for its first flight for up to five years at sea. Older birds stay at sea for months at a time, only coming back to breed. They have the same mate for life and will meet each other each year, only here to reproduce. Other species that can be seen are marine iguanas that stay brightly colored year-round, Galapagos doves, Nazca boobies, blue-footed boobies, swallow-tailed gulls, red-billed tropic birds, and Darwin finches.

Petrel (Golden not ready yet) - San Cristobal, Española, Floreana & Santa Cruz

Devil’s Crown/Cormorant Point & Post Office Bay

AM: Floreana Island is one of the most interesting when it comes to human history. The first Galapagos resident was an Irishman who lived on Floreana from 1807 to 1809. It is the site of the first post office within the islands created by whalers in the 1700’s. Later it became the first island to be colonized by Ecuadorians, but to this day is still very isolated. Surrounded by mystery, in the 1930’s various disappearances occurred and is thought to be because of tension between a baroness and her three servants who arrived after an already settled husband and wife, who gave birth to the first to be born in Galapagos and another couple of a doctor and female companion who lived of the land from their garden. The small population of today lives off the land with home grown farms and gets their water from rain filled ponds during the rainy season. There is one hotel with the only phone in the port of Velasco Ibarra where most residents live, the rest live up in the highlands. Transportation is limited and is only available every two weeks.

Devil’s Crown is a visitor site that boasts the best snorkeling opportunities. Below the surface are amazing volcanic structures that have submerged over time. Hundreds of different colorful fish species can be found here among the coral reefs. Sharks, rays, sea turtles, hammer head sharks and sea lions are also common visitors. It is an underwater spectacle that cannot be missed.

PM: A completely human influential site, Post Office Bay is the first official post office created by passing whalers in the 1700’s. To this day visitors continue the tradition as many leave addressed messages on post cards in the barrel to be sent by future visitors while picking up post cards left behind by previous visitors to send when they return home. It is a fun exchangeable activity many visitors enjoy.

Petrel (Golden not ready yet) - San Cristobal, Española, Floreana & Santa Cruz

Disembarkation

AM: Today Santa Cruz is one of the most popular tourist sites. Santa Cruz means holy cross, but its English name comes from the British vessel – Indefatigable.

The Charles Darwin Research Station conducts many different research projects and provides assistance to other researchers and governmental institutions and agencies, especially the Galapagos National Park. Many of the results are later published online, in magazines, and popular scientific journals. The research station also plays a big part in educating the community and public schools in Galapagos. There is also the longtime running Giant Tortoise restoration program that includes various stages of the giant tortoise from eggs, hatchlings and adults.

After the morning excursion, you will be assisted to Baltra airport for your flight to the mainland.

Petrel (Golden not ready yet) - San Cristobal, Española, Floreana & Santa Cruz

5 Day - Central Islands & Genovesa

itinerary map

AM: A Petrel representative after passing through immigration and baggage claim. When ready, you will be transferred to the yacht. You will then be shown to your cabin where you will have some time to settle in before the welcome briefing and lunch.

PM:  Today Santa Cruz is one of the most popular tourist sites. Santa Cruz means holy cross, but its English name comes from the British vessel – Indefatigable.

The Highlands of Santa Cruz is a very interesting site due to the rich wildlife, hills, ferns, volcanoes and lava tubes present. Exploring the lava tubes is a surreal and unique experience. Here you can see all the different agricultural zones that are present in the Galapagos in one place. The variety of birds makes this a bird watchers delight.

Be prepared to admire the famous giant tortoises in the wild. It is impressive to see these endemic animals that give the name to the archipelago, Galapagos. Birdwatching is also one of the activities in the highlands, since this area is home of finches and other Galapagos birds. Finally, we walk into lava caves to see the enormous lava flows that formed the islands before continuing back to the M/C Petrel.

Petrel (GG) - Central Islands & Genovesa

Sullivan Bay & Pinnacle Rock

AM:  Santiago Island is the second Island visited by Charles Darwin was originally named after England’s King James the second. The island was a good source of salt, water and food for whalers and buccaneers passing. There was a salt mine inland that was used to salt fish and tortoise meat. Land iguanas used to populate the island but are now extinct. From Darwin’s own notes he wrote that land iguanas were thriving quite well since there was no place to even pitch a tent. Santiago Island today is now one of the most visited islands.

Sullivan Bay is a satellite island of Santiago. This is one of the best places to see the Galapagos fur seal. There is not much wildlife to see here, but the old lava formations are quite a site to see with tuff cones, pyroclastic cones, and other volcanic landscapes.

PM:  Bartholomew is another satellite island that derives from Santiago Island. It is home of the famous Pinnacle Rock and is named after James Sullivan, a friend of Charles Darwin who was also aboard the HMS Beagle .  Of all the islands, this is the most photographed and is also featured in the 2003 movie “Master and Commander”.

Pinnacle rock is a volcano cone formed by magma expelled by an underwater volcano. The sea cooled the hot lava and as it exploded from contact, the pieces formed together this huge rock of many, many layers of basalt. The huge rock also has a beach where a small population of green sea turtles will nest. Galapagos penguins gather here and swimming can offer beautiful sights of colorful schools of fish and curious sea lions.

Petrel (Golden not ready yet) - Central Islands & Genovesa

Darwin Bay & El Barranco

AM:  Genovesa is a horse-shoe shaped island that was formed by the eruption of a shield volcano with large slopes formed by gradual lava flows. It is known as “Bird Island” due to the wide variety of birds that can be seen. The only reptile on the entire island is the marine iguana and it is one of the very few places red-footed boobies gather in one large mass.

Darwin Bay is the result of the shield volcano where one of the sides of the caldera collapsed after years of erosion. It is one of the places in the Galapagos where red-footed boobies can be guaranteed to be seen. Over 200,000 red-footed boobies are estimated to be living in the trees and bushes of Genovesa.

PM:  Better known as Prince Phillip’s Steps, a steep and rocky path leads up to a cliff with a marvelous view. There is also a Palo Santo Forest that is home to nesting red-footed boobies and other birds.

Petrel (Golden not ready yet) - Central Islands & Genovesa

Egas Port, Buccaneer Cove & Espumilla Beach

AM:  Egas port is also known as James Bay. It is home to quick footed Galapagos lava lizards, Galapagos fur seals along the grottos and tide pools and is a great snorkeling site.

PM:  Buccaneer Cove: This cove is better known for excellent snorkeling opportunities and was once known as a refuge for British buccaneers or pirates. The underwater formations are amazing and many different species of fish gather here.

Petrel (Golden not ready yet) - Central Islands & Genovesa

AM:  After breakfast, enjoy the visit to Black Turtle Cove, which is located on the north shore of Santa Cruz. It is a living illustration of how mangroves alter the marine environment to create a rich and unique habitat. Three mangrove species crowd the area from the shore out into the lagoon, which reaches almost a mile inland.

As you drift through quiet waters in the zodiac, you are likely to see spotted eagle rays and diamond shaped mustard rays, which swim in a diamond formation. White-tipped reef sharks slip beneath the boat and Pacific green sea turtles come to the surface for air and to mate. Waterfowl, including pelicans, herons and egret, all feed in the cove. This is a peaceful place that will make you feel calm.

Your cruise has officially come to an end. We hope you enjoyed your Galapagos Cruise! We will now transfer you to your scheduled departure from Baltra Airport to mainland Ecuador.

Petrel (Golden not ready yet) - Central Islands & Genovesa

6 Day - Isabela, Fernandina & Central Islands

itinerary map

AM: Assistance will be provided upon your arrival by a Petrel representative after passing through immigration and baggage claim.  When ready, you will be transferred to the yacht.  You will then be shown to your cabin where you will have some time to settle in before the welcome briefing and lunch.

PM: The island was named after English nobleman Lord Hugh Seymour.

Petrel (GG) - Isabela, Fernandina & Central Islands

Vicente Roca & Espinosa Point

AM: On Vicente Roca Point the geological formations are simply outstanding and it is a great place to view various bird species such as blue-footed boobies, Nazca boobies, gulls, storm petrels, and brown noddy terns.

PM: No foreign species have ever invaded Fernandina Island and therefore it is one of the world’s most pristine island ecosystems. It is one of the most active islands and is the westernmost island in the archipelago. The volcano “La Cumbre” dominates the landscape with lava fields reaching the ocean.  The Cromwell Current also flows on the west making the cold and nutrient rich water an ideal habitat for the Galapagos Penguin and Flightless Cormorant that nests here.

Espinosa Point area on Fernandina also provides a great opportunity to see the Galapagos Hawk.  Land iguanas are found on the inner parts of the island near the volcanoes caldera and marine iguanas will nest on the coast during certain times of the year. There is only one visitor site to Fernandina which may involve a hike or snorkeling opportunity, making the rest of the island unspoiled in a most natural state.

Petrel (Golden not ready yet) - Isabela, Fernandina & Central Islands

Tagus Cove & Urbina Bay

AM: This visitor site is located on the upper west part of the island and was named after and English war ship that used to pass the islands in the 1800’s.

PM: A bit more south of Tagus Cove is Urbina Bay.

Petrel (Golden not ready yet) - Isabela, Fernandina & Central Islands

Elizabeth Bay & Moreno Point

AM: A visitor site on the way down to the southern parts of Isabela Island is Elizabeth Bay.  There are a series of islets, a lagoon and mangroves surrounding it.  The mangroves provide a great place to observe many birds and at the lagoon it is possible to see sea turtles resting and feeding.

PM: On the South Western point of Isabela Island is Moreno Point.  With striking black geological features, it is home to endemic species known only to the barren lava flows found here.  Various activities are possible such as a hike, a panga ride to better see various sea birds, geological features, and snorkelling to view the vibrant underwater life.

Petrel (Golden not ready yet) - Isabela, Fernandina & Central Islands

Sierra Negra Volcano & Arnaldo Tupiza Breeding Center + Wetlands

AM: Sierra Negra is located on the South of the Island and are two of the oldest of all Isabela’s volcanoes.  A hike will show different types of vegetation and geological zones and possibly inside the caldera where petrified lava is present.

PM: The Arnaldo Tupiza Breeding Center, where two species of giant tortoise are bred to increase the population of these incredible animals, plays an essential role in protecting the future of the Galapagos. As you walk around the Centre you will also be able to enjoy the beautiful gardens that boast of a wide variety of native plants.  Just outside Puerto Villamil you can also take a walk around the Isabela wetlands, comprised of lagoons, swamps and mangroves, which have become a paradise for migratory birds such as stilts and flamingos.

PM: As part of your day, we will head towards the Highlands of Santa Cruz to visit the Twin Craters or Gemelos, meaning twins in Spanish, are two caved in magma chambers of a previous volcano. After years of erosion and extinction, the once full chambers caved in leaving two similar craters that can be seen on a short hike that passes by a Scalesia forest.

Then, be prepared to admire the famous giant tortoises in the wild. It is impressive to see these endemic animals that give the name to the archipelago, Galapagos. Petrel (GG) - Central & Southern Islands

South Plaza Island & Santa Fe Island

AM: South Plaza is one of the smallest islands with a visitor site, but is home to an incredible amount of diverse flora and fauna. It has a large population of Sesuvium plants like the prickly pear cactus tree that is an important source of food for the land iguana. Just a few years ago mice were finally eradicated from the island, helping the population of land iguanas grow healthily once more.

PM: Santa Fe Island is home to the unique Santa Fe land iguana and is the only place to find Opuntia cactus. Giant tortoises were once native to this island but after the many years of pirates and buccaneers visiting the island and taking the tortoises aboard as food, they became extinct. The Island is also called Barrington Island, named after British Admiral Samuel Barrington. Large numbers of sea lions can be found on the landing beach and Galapagos hawks can also sometimes be seen.

Sea lions are abundant, as well as marine iguanas. It is a very calm and tranquil site with beautiful views, including Kicker Rock off in the distance.

Your cruise has officially come to an end. We hope you enjoyed your Galapagos Cruise! We will now transfer you to your scheduled departure from San Cristobal Airport to mainland Ecuador. Safe travels!

Petrel (Golden not ready yet) - Isabela, Fernandina & Central Islands

8 Day - Española, Genovesa & Central Islands

itinerary map

AM: Assistance will be provided upon your arrival by a Petrel representative after passing through immigration and baggage claim. When ready, you will be transferred to the yacht. You will then be shown to your cabin where you will have some time to settle in before the welcome briefing and lunch.

PM: A visit to the David Rodriguez Breeding Center provides information about the origin and evolution of the giant tortoise and explains why the center is so vital in safeguarding the future of these incredible creatures.

Petrel (GG) - Española, Genovesa & Central Islands

Gardner Bay, Osborn Islet, Gardner Islet & Suarez Point

AM: Gardner Bay/Osborn Islet/Gardner Islet: Visit one of the best beaches in the Galapagos.

PM: This is a phenomenal site where you will get to see many of Espanola Island’s endemic species.

Petrel (Golden not ready yet) - Española, Genovesa & Central Islands

Devil’s Crown/Cormorant Point & Post Office Bay/Baroness Lookout Point

AM: Devil’s Crown is a visitor site that boasts the best snorkeling opportunities. Below the surface are amazing volcanic structures that have submerged over time. Hundreds of different colorful fish species can be found here among the coral reefs. Sharks, rays, sea turtles, hammer head sharks and sea lions are also common visitors. It is an underwater spectacle that cannot be missed.

Another fun and interesting visitor site is Cormorant Point. Two beaches can be visited and flamingoes can be seen wading through brackish lagoons looking for shrimp, which gives them their bright and vibrant colors. One of the beaches look green because of olivine crystals and the other is appropriately called Flour Beach a powdery white, made from fine pulverized coral.

PM: A completely human-influential site, Post Office Bay is the first official post office created by passing whalers in the 1700’s. To this day visitors continue the tradition as many leave addressed messages on post cards in the barrel to be sent by future visitors while picking up post cards left behind by previous visitors to send when they return home. It is a fun exchangeable activity many visitors enjoy.

On the northern part of the island, Baroness Lookout Point has a beautiful landscape and historic view. It was named after the supposed Austrian Baroness that was the subject of many mysterious disappearances and well-known stories of loathing by those on Floreana.

Petrel (Golden not ready yet) - Española, Genovesa & Central Islands

AM: The Charles Darwin Research Station conducts many different research projects and provides assistance to other researchers and governmental institutions and agencies, especially the Galapagos National Park. Many of the results are later published online, in magazines, and popular scientific journals. The research station also plays a big part in educating the community and public schools in Galapagos. There is also the longtime running Giant Tortoise restoration program that includes various stages of the giant tortoise from eggs, hatchlings and adults.

PM: The Highlands of Santa Cruz is a very interesting site due to the rich wildlife, hills, ferns, volcanoes and lava tubes present. Exploring the lava tubes is a surreal and unique experience. Here you can see all the different agricultural zones that are present in the Galapagos in one place. The variety of birds makes this a bird watchers delight.

Petrel (Golden not ready yet) - Española, Genovesa & Central Islands

AM: Sullivan Bay is a satellite island of Santiago.

It is home of the famous Pinnacle Rock and is named after James Sullivan, a friend of Charles Darwin who was also aboard the HMS Beagle. Of all the islands, this is the most photographed and is also featured in the 2003 movie “Master and Commander”.

Petrel (Golden not ready yet) - Española, Genovesa & Central Islands

AM: Darwin Bay is the result of the shield volcano where one of the sides of the caldera collapsed after years of erosion.

Petrel (Golden not ready yet) - Española, Genovesa & Central Islands

Egas Port & Buccaneer Cove /Espumilla Beach

AM: Egas port is also known as James Bay. It is home to quick footed Galapagos lava lizards, Galapagos fur seals along the grottos and tide pools and is a great snorkeling site.

PM: Buccaneer Cove: This cove is better known for excellent snorkeling opportunities and was once known as a refuge for British buccaneers or pirates. The underwater formations are amazing and many different species of fish gather here.

We will visit Espumilla Beach where marine iguanas lounge and the Sally-Lightfoot crabs attract the hunting herons and perform the dance of predator and prey right before your eyes. Snorkeling is highly recommended as you could find yourself face to face with an octopus, moray eel, shark, or a variety of other species of tropical fish.

Petrel (Golden not ready yet) - Española, Genovesa & Central Islands

Safe travels!

Most Popular Galapagos Islands Trips & Tours

The great weather of the Galapagos Islands makes them a fantastic destination for travel year-round. Every month of the year is a good time to enjoy a tour of the region. The Galapagos Islands have a subtropical climate that is almost completely determined by sea currents. Although most believe the Galapagos to be a very hot destination, the cool water currents in the area keep the climate more temperate year-round. The islands’ equatorial location ensures twelve hours of sunlight daily, all year long. The mild variations in weather from month to month result in an overall climate of warm days, cool nights and low humidity. Anytime is a great time to travel to the Galapagos; while visiting one can expect to see plenty of sunshine, blue skies and a possible chance of light rain. There are two seasons in the Galapagos:

  • The hot or rainy season arrives with the coming of the warm Panama current. The warmest months are December through June with temperatures ranging from 72-90°F (22-32°C), with February and March being the hottest and sunniest. The sea is at its warmest (in the 70°F range) and tends to be calmer during this time. Although the islands receive slightly more rainfall during these months, most of the lower elevations remain quite arid. Expect blue skies and sunshine and with a chance of short afternoon showers.
  • July through November is the dry or garua season, which begins with the arrival of cold ocean currents. One can expect cooler temperatures and a light mist in the morning during these months. The skies are also a bit cloudier and air temperatures a bit cooler, in the range of 60-75°F (15-24°C). The garua is a mist that forms in the highlands, providing moisture and usually tapering off by midday, leaving skies slightly overcast or sunny for the afternoon. The air temperature can be slightly lower, but the Equator is still a warm place to visit. During this time of year a cold ocean current from the south, called the Antarctic Humboldt current, causes the water temperature to drop slightly, ranging from 60°F- 72°F (15-22°C).

Within both seasons, there are other variants, like altitude, that affect the weather. The lowest point of elevation is sea level and the highest is Wolf Volcano, Isabela Island (5,600ft or 1,710m). There are seven vegetation zones ranging from arid coastal zones to evergreen cloud forests to treeless shrubless pampa zones, all of which are affected by moisture levels, temperature and sunlight. During the garua season, the coast is very dry while the highlands are much wetter. The hot season may or may not have a rainy period which normally lasts four to six weeks, or in the event of El Nino, a longer period. During the hot season, the coastal zones remain arid. Prevailing winds from the southeast keep the southern sides of the major islands much moister then the northern sides, which fall into a rain shadow resulting in the arid zones reaching a much higher elevation. The months of May and December are changeover periods and weather and sea temperatures in these months tend to vary from year to year depending on the change in the water currents. Occasionally, one will feel humidity, predominantly on the south side of major islands. Compared to the humidity levels in the Amazon or the US South, the humidity in the Galapagos is very low and will not disturb activities. Snorkeling is an activity offered on all Galapagos trips. Wetsuits, available onboard most cruises and for all land tours, are recommended June through November. Though sea temperatures vary significantly from island to island, generally all travelers will use a wetsuit during this time. Snorkeling in shallow waters offshore or in protective coves tends to be warmer. Waters to the north, near Genovesa are warmed by the Panama Current, whereas snorkeling off the western island of Isabela is always chilly due to the cold Cromwell undercurrent. The Humboldt Current, or the South Equatorial Current, brings cold sub-Antarctic water that flows through the archipelago eight or nine months a year keeping sea temperatures low. One will experience a variance in sea temperatures while snorkeling on any trip during any time of the year. During the hot season, travelers tend to spend more time in the water, especially at midday when the temperatures are the hottest and wildlife is less active. Snorkeling is an optional activity and those who are not interested in snorkeling have other options. Sea Conditions are a concern of many cruise travelers. All Galapagos vessels are small; the largest accommodates only 100 passengers. Naturally, some movement will be felt on all vessels regardless of the time of year or the size of the vessel. The seas around the Galapagos are generally shallow and despite being the crossroads of several currents, the waters are not terribly rough. The seas are at their calmest January through April. December, May and June are transitional months during which one will experience relatively calm seas, though it varies year to year depending on the shift in the currents. July through November, one will find choppier seas, with August through October being the roughest. Certain vessels are more stable than others and cabin location can also help avoid seasickness. Most travel is done at night while passengers are sleeping with the only exception being the short midday transit (two hours or less). During the day, vessels dock in calm waters near shore. Passengers spend most of the day on land or snorkeling. These factors lessen the risk of seasickness. We recommend that you bring over-the-counter or prescription motion sickness medication, though many cruisers discover that the seas are much calmer than anticipated. If you are concerned about motion sickness, please contact us for more details on how to select the right vessel for you.

The overall holiday was excellent. The Southern Explorations element was fantastic and the Eclipse could not be faulted, except I ate far too much!  - Natasha Rowlands, UK (Galapagos Island Cruise)

galapagos sea lion

I was very impressed with the organization of our trip.  Everything Southern Explorations was responsible for went smoothly and everything was on schedule.  The Manatee on the Amazon had some initial trouble but it could not have been known or anticipated by SE.  Once again I would like to compliment Jorge on his work.  He made our comings and goings to and from Quito very easy.  If I go to South America again my first call will be to Southern Explorations. Thank you. - Peter Tuck, CA (Corals & Manatee)

petrel galapagos cruise review

Petrel Galapagos catamaran with dark blue hull & 2 white upper decks with wooden exterior cabin doors sits in calm water.

Please note that the Petrel cruise ship is fully chartered in 2024 and 2025, and therefore not currently available to book for Petrel Galapagos Cruises or as one of our Galapagos Islands yacht charters . Please contact us  for current information on this ship and comparable options, or browse all of our small Galapagos cruise ships  to filter by ship size and ship type.

The luxury 16-guest Petrel catamaran offers a first-class way to cruise the magical archipelago. Named after a seabird common to the Galapagos, the Petrel is much like her namesake: elegant, swift and silent at sea. Her catamaran design offers comfort and stability, as well as spacious staterooms (each with a private balcony), a comfortable lounge and a Jacuzzi.

Hear It From Travelers Who Have Explored With Us

Very pleased with the process and trip planning info given by AdventureSmith. The Petrel was an excellent boat and the crew and our naturalist were friendly, knowledgeable and amazing.

In Galapagos, the reason for going is wildlife on land and marine. Both were as expected.

Great vessel and crew. The nature guide was outstanding! And AdventureSmith's Taylor was knowledgeable and attentive to all of our questions and needs.

Accommodations Review

The Petrel was a great vessel. Oro Verde was a nice and friendly hotel.

Meals Review

Our chef (Juan Carlos) was amazing. Nice to eat such a variety of local food.

Crew & Guides Review

Our naturalist (Morris Garcia) was nice, friendly, knowledgeable, interesting and funny.

AdventureSmith Explorations Review

Absolutely we hope to use AdventureSmith for future trips.

Traveler Advice

Make sure you take sea sickness precautions. We did and did great but several fellow passengers did not and had some miserable bouts. Make sure if there is a particular species you wish to see that you make sure the specific islands you are visiting have them and that they are there when you are traveling.

Featured in this Traveler Review

Started w/ Quito. This was first trip to S.A., and Quito was a good introduction with its history, architecture and culture. Left feeling we could have spent more time in Ecuador. In Galapagos, the reason for going is wild life on land and marine. Both were as expected. We had a very good guide that was both informative and fun, supporting all the the group wanted to do. Snorkeling was superb.

Petrel was a very nice ship. Big state rooms, clean, varied spaces.

It was a shame that they are working with very fresh ingredients (seafood, fruits, etc.) but the chef (who is really a cook) tended to overcook, under season, blandly present the food. A few simple changes at virtually no cost and a few at modest cost could make a significant improvement and be more on par with the quality of the rest of the trip and its cost. Of course the biggest thing is a chef that is oriented differently. Then things like a better selection of breads at b'fast. An 'egg station' would be huge vs. the steam table pan of scrambled eggs. Meats that were some roasted vs. stewed. Fish and vegetables that were not overcooked, with seasoning beyond bland. FYI, the fruits were always fresh, the juices the same. Coffee offering was superb. Bar service was adequate, however, wine selection was limited and popular wine (sauvignon blanc) was used up by mid trip and not replenished. Many things could have been addressed with pre-planning requests/ offers.

The naturalist guide (Harry) was terrific. He was knowledgable and created a fun atmosphere. He supported everyone's desires as much as possible. The Cruise Director (Gustavo) seemed new and tentative, so he always seemed to be just another member of the crew rather than someone leading it and being proactive with guests.

Rooms and general eating/lounging areas were kept spotless.

Buffet breakfast and lunch were fine. Some of the dinners were just ok, and portions were small.

Itinerary Review

We enjoyed every excursion, both hiking and snorkeling. The hike on Lobos (sea lion island) was extremely difficult and dangerous. The rocks were very slippery and difficult to maneuver.

Transportation Review

Our passage from Florida to the Galapagos was smooth-no issues.

Harry was professional, extremely knowledgeable, and amusing. It was a pleasure having him as our guide.

Taylor was knowledgeable and attentive to all of our questions and needs. Everything was well prepared and thorough. There were no issues.

Buy the best hiking shoes you can afford, as some of the hikes were challenging and  required great footwear. Also, take books and playing cards/games, as there is a good deal of down time after some activities and after dinner. There are no TVs and no internet.
