Move over Kirk -- Christopher Pike is the captain now. In "Star Trek: Strange New Worlds," a spinoff of " Star Trek: Discovery " and prequel to " Star Trek: The Original Series ," "Star Trek" fans are getting a glimpse of the U.S.S. Enterprise under the command of Captain Christopher Pike. "Star Trek: Strange New Worlds" is streaming exclusively on Paramount+.

A new entry in the " Star Trek " universe, "Star Trek: Strange New Worlds," premieres May 5. The show will be available to stream exclusively on Paramount Plus . 

"Star Trek: Strange New Worlds" is a spin-off of "Star Trek: Discovery," which is also a Paramount Plus original series. Both shows serve as prequels to "Star Trek: The Original Series." Anson Mount stars as Captain Christopher Pike and the show explores his time in command of the USS Enterprise before James T. Kirk replaced him. Mount first played Pike on "Discovery."

Rebecca Romijn and Ethan Peck reprise their roles from "Discovery" as well; Romijn plays Number One, Pike's second-in-command, and Peck plays Spock, a half-Vulcan science officer who first appeared in "The Original Series." The new show also features other characters that debuted in the original "Star Trek" show from the 1960s, including M'Benga (Babs Olusanmokun), Nurse Chapel (Jess Bush), and Nyota Uhura (Celia Rose Gooding).  

Early reviews of "Star Trek: Strange New Worlds" have been positive, and the show currently holds a "100% Fresh" rating on review-aggregator Rotten Tomatoes . 

How to watch 'Star Trek: Strange New Worlds'

You can watch "Star Trek: Strange New Worlds" exclusively on Paramount Plus . The first episode premieres on May 5, and new episodes debut every Thursday through July 7.

In the new picture, Gooding sports a longer hairstyle, closer to that worn by Nichelle Nichols , who originated the role; the previous two seasons had seen her with a shorter haircut. Season three promises to have some major developments for Chapel, as well - Roger Korby, her fiancé from the Star Trek: The Original Series episode "What Are Little Girls Made Of?", will have a recurring role on the upcoming season, where he'll be played by Cillian O'Sullivan . The season was filmed at Toronto's Star Trek Stage earlier this year, after a break between seasons that was extended by last year's dual SAG-AFTRA and WGA strikes; while that stage is now occupied by the production of Star Trek: Starfleet Academy , Gooding, Bush, and company will return there next spring for season four .

What Do We Know About 'Strange New Worlds' Season Three?

The upcoming season will pick up right where last season's cliffhanger finale left off - with the Enterprise under attack by the Gorn, a race of hostile reptilian aliens. Presumably, it will also address the fate of recurring character Captain Marie Batel ( Melanie Scrofano ), who we last saw having been infected with a seemingly fatal dose of Gorn larvae. The series will be getting a new addition, in the form of beloved Original Series character Montgomery "Scotty" Scott; he first appeared on the series in the season finale, played by Scottish actor Martin Quinn . The season will also include a murder mystery episode, directed by Star Trek stalwart Jonathan Frakes . Our first tease of the season came at this year's San Diego Comic Con, where a clip of an upcoming episode in which several crew members are transformed into Vulcans was revealed.

Although Strange New Worlds won't be back for some time, there's plenty of Star Trek coming to Paramount+ in the meantime. Star Trek: Lower Decks ' fifth and final season will premiere on October 24, while the streaming-original movie, Star Trek: Section 31 , will bow on the streamer in early 2025.

I n honor of "Star Trek Day," the premiere episodes of several Star Trek series and Short Treks will be available to watch for free in a special sampling Sept. 7-13. The "Take the Chair" campaign invites fans to see themselves in the iconic  U.S.S. Enterprise  captain's chair and ask themselves, "What would I do if I were setting the course to the future?" Fans will be able to engage through a digital experience on StarTrek.com. Throughout the month of September, 25% of U.S.product sales from select items on the official "Star Trek" shop will benefit these three nonprofits.

Star Trek Day also will see various pop-up events, including the Taste of Chicago located in Chicago, Ill., throughout the weekend of Sept. 6, which will feature the  U.S.S. Enterprise  captain's chair, while on Sept. 8, activations in Berlin, Germany, at the Alexa Mall and in Vancouver, British Columbia, at the Richmond Centre will feature a modern architectural interpretation of the captain's chair crafted from sustainable materials.

Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home 's Pavel Chekov (Walter Koenig) narrowly escaped the fate Captain James T. Kirk (Paul Wesley) met in Star Trek: Strange New Worlds . Star Trek IV and Strange New Worlds season 2, episode 3, "Tomorrow and Tomorrow and Tomorrow" are among Star Trek' s best and most memorable time travel stories. But while Star Trek IV was a joyous and uplifting success for Admiral James T. Kirk (William Shatner) and his crew, Strange New Worlds ' "Tomorrow and Tomorrow and Tomorrow" was a tragedy for Captain Kirk and Lt. La'an Noonien-Singh (Christina Chong).

In Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home , Admiral Kirk took an insane gamble and time traveled to 1986 San Francisco when an enormous probe threatened to destroy 23rd-century Earth. Kirk's mission was to find two humpback whales and bring them back to the future in the hopes that the whales could speak to and stop the probe. Kirk, Spock (Leonard Nimoy), and the former crew of the USS Enterprise were true fish out of water in 20th-century San Francisco as they split up to fulfill different objectives so they could make the return trip to the 23rd century.

Star Trek stories set on Earth don't need starships or space battles to comment on the human condition, as the best Star Trek often does.

Chekov Almost Died In 1986 San Francisco In Star Trek IV

Thankfully, chekov was rescued by captain kirk and his friends..

Pavel Chekov nearly met his end in Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home . After the Russian Starfleet Officer conspicuously asked passersby on the streets of San Francisco where he could find "nuclear wessels," Chekov and Lieutenant Nyota Uhura (Nichelle Nichols) fittingly locate the USS Enterprise. In this case, the Enterprise was a 20th-century US Navy aircraft carrier. Chekov and Uhura beamed aboard to take enough nuclear material to power Admiral Kirk's stolen Klingon Bird-of-Prey . When they were spotted, Uhura safely beamed away, but Chekov was seriously injured in a fall while trying to escape the Navy's security.

Chekov made it back to the 23rd century with his crew.

Chekov could have died in 1986 San Francisco, which would have been disastrous. After all, Pavel is from 300 years in the future, with no identification. Luckily, Admiral Kirk, Dr. Leonard McCoy (DeForest Kelley), and Dr. Gillian Taylor (Catherine Hicks) infiltrated the hospital where Chekov was admitted, and they successfully mounted a rescue. Chekov made it back to the 23rd century with his crew, Gillian, and her humpback whales safe and sound. No member of Admiral Kirk's crew perished and was left behind in the 20th century.

Captain James T. Kirk in Star Trek: Strange New Worlds season 2, episode 3, "Tomorrow and Tomorrow and Tomorrow" wasn't as fortunate as Chekov in Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home . Kirk was from an alternate timeline, and he joined Lt. La'an Noonien-Singh on her mission to course-correct reality back to Star Trek 's Prime timeline . La'an and Kirk found themselves in 21st-century Toronto trying to stop a Romulan time agent named Sera (Adelaide Kane) from altering the course of time. During this mission, La'an and Kirk fell in love.

Kirk was Captain of the United Earth Fleet Enterprise in his alternate timeline.

Tragically, when Sera revealed herself as the villain to James and La'an, the Romulan shot Kirk, who died from his wound . La'an was able to stop Sera from her plot to murder the young Khan Noonien-Singh (Desmond Sivan), but she couldn't save Kirk. La'an still mourns James, even after meeting and befriending his Prime Universe counterpart, Lt. James T. Kirk. What happened to Captain Kirk's body after La'an restored the proper Prime Timeline isn't clear, as James was a John Doe with no identification. Captain Kirk was ultimately a sacrifice to save time itself in Star Trek: Strange New Worlds , but no sacrifice by Chekov was necessary to save Earth in Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home.

Star Trek: Strange New Worlds star Anson Mount discusses a possible retcon of his iconic character's tragic fate.

Per ScreenRant , Mount opened up about the possibility of a return via retcon during a Q & A session alongside fellow stars Rebecca Romijn, Ethan Peck, Celia Rose Gooding, Carol Kane, and Melanie Scrofano. When asked about his character Captain Christopher Pike's future in the series, Mount responded quite carefully, noting, " I have to preface this by saying what we think doesn't really matter. It's not our wheelhouse. It’s not our department." Mount added, "But I will say, we have not been with ourselves too specific about where we are in that particular timeline."

But in general, I think I would like to stick with canon, and just, maybe, from a different point of view . Maybe from Pike's point of view. So that's all I'll say about that."

Anson Mount's portrayal of Captain Pike kicked off with the series premiere of Star Trek: Strange New Worlds in May 2022. The series follows Pike and the rest of the crew of the U.S.S. Enterprise as they were over a decade prior to the events of 1966's original Star Trek series. Alongside Mount, Star Trek: Strange New Worlds stars Jess Bush as Christine Chapel, Christina Chong as La'an Noonien-Singh, Celia Rose Gooding in Nichelle Nichols' iconic role of Nyota Uhura, and Paul Wesley as Captain James T. Kirk, a role made famous by original Star Trek star and Hollywood icon William Shatner. The series also introduced Ethan Peck's Spock , originally portrayed by the late Leonard Nimoy.

Fans of Star Trek: Strange New Worlds are currently eagerly awaiting the release of the series' third season which is set to premiere sometime in 2025 following delays related to the 2023 WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes. Mount previously discussed what Season 3 has in store for audiences, noting that he believes it is going to be the show's "best season so far" in terms of storytelling, development, and its more technical aspects. Mount also promised an upcoming musical episode that, surprisingly, "will not be the craziest thing that we did or we have done by the end of this. We’re feeling more ownership over what it is that we’re doing and realizing that it continues to resonate."
