Gear Review: Shimano Exsense

What is it.

Shimano Exsence spinning reel

What sets it apart?

Ego-charged bass anglers may frown on spinning tackle, but Shimano recently debuted a serious weapon for the finesse game. For starters, the Exsence reel boasts Shimano’s Hagane gear – a cold forged aluminum Micro Module drive gear for strength and smoothness. Also, the reel enjoys exceptional water resistance, thanks to X-Protect — a “labyrinth design” three-lipped rubber seal system. And for drag efficiency, Shimano employs the Rapid Fire Drag feature, with strategically placed and shielded anti-rust ball bearings, plus a one-way roller bearing.

How do I use it?

The Exsence comes in two models. The 7.1-ounce C3000MHG has a 6.0:1 gear ratio and retrieves 35 inches of line per crank. The spool accommodates 225 yards of 4-pound monofilament or up to 95 yards of 20-pound braid. The 8.6-ounce Exsence 4000MXG brings a 6.2:1 gear ratio and recovers 39 inches per crank. The spool takes 190 yards of 6-pound mono or up to 95 yards of 20-pound braid.

There’s no denying the must-have importance of drop shotting, Ned rigging and — I’m gonna say — wacky rigging to the modern tournament arsenal. Nearly every tournament offers some level of evidence, but none of these should be dismissed as only limit-makers. Big-fish potential remains, so arming yourself with tackle fit for the task is critical. Looks like Shimano did a fine job of packing a lot of performance into a lightweight reel you won’t mind holding for extended periods.

In addition to delivering incredible casting distance and accuracy, the Hi-Power X manufacturing process defines precise actions, enhances overall strength, and reduces blank twists for better control when fighting fish. • CI4 is a Shimano original material reinforced with carbon fiber. It is lighter and has a higher strength than conventional resin material. CI4+ is an advanced version of the original CI4 material. This highly technical material is 2.5 times more rigid than CI4 and is used in Shimano reel seats to increase sensitivity and reduce weight. Use of CI4+ for the reel seat also delivers remarkable rigidity for perfect reel fixation which results in better rod efficiency.
• In Hi-Power X construction, the blank’s outermost layer is diagonally wrapped with carbon tape, which forms an array of “X” shapes. The width of the tape, its winding angle, and the part of the rod being wrapped are fine-tuned according to the target fish species. The flexibility allows Shimano to adjust these wraps during construction for precise actions, enhanced overall strength, and added twist resistance. Hi-Power X construction delivers sharp and crisp rod control by the angler.
• Carbon Monocoque grip is a carbon-molded grip that is lightweight with high sensitivity, transferring even the smallest vibration to an angler’s hand. The Carbon Monocoque Grip increases sensitivity by 30% compared to traditional rod handles. It utilizes a hollow structure that eliminates unnecessary parts of the rear grip to improve weight reduction and vibration transmission.

It’s where I go for reel seats, too. Beautiful work, definitely punching above their price tag.  

Likewise....been adorning my rods with Ray’s awesome reelseats for years now....  

Cactus Juice stabilized?  

Spaulted maple, one of my favorite insert woods.  

I meant the stabilization process. You have vacuum & high pressure infusion. Cactus juice is resin that is typically used by vacuum infusion stabilizers.  

I do appreciate Ray Lee's inserts but the hardware, not so much. Fortunately he will sell them separately.  

Ok....I’ll ask, what do you find wrong with Ray’s hardware? Looks good on Hotrodz to me......
