The Allianz Riviera
General presentation.
OGC Nice had played at the Stade du Ray since 1927. Le Ray no longer met the necessary standards of the French Professional Football League, and the Club received special dispensation to continue playing at the ground. So it was with much enthusiasm that OGC Nice moved into its new home in September 2013: Allianz Riviera.
Allianz Riviera is a multi-function arena for sporting events and concerts, with a capacity of between 35-45,000 spectators, but which can also host congresses and seminars. Its resident club, OGC Nice, can make the most of the stadium’s full potential.
The National Museum of Sport was opened in June 2014 and ensures that Allianz Riviera remains an important element in the daily life of the region's inhabitants. The museum covers 5,000 m² and boasts 50,000 exhibits and 200,000 documents from the nation’s sporting history.
An eco-stadium
Located in the heart of Eco-Valley, Allianz Riviera is a reference for sustainable development, associated with important social and economic ambition.
Designed by the architects Wilmotte and Associates and Vinci, it harnesses the most innovative technologies to help make Allianz Riviera one of the very first eco-stadiums in the world.

Allianz Riviera: OGC Nice
The Allianz Riviera is the home of Olympique Gymnaste Club Nice Côte d’Azur, or OGC Nice for short. It was opened in 2013 and replaced the club’s former stadium, the Stade Municipal du Ray. Construction on the new ground began in 2011 and it was initially feared that it might not be completed within the initial time frame. When it was confirmed that France had been awarded the hosting of the 2016 UEFA European Championships and that the Allianz Riviera would be one of the stadiums used for the competition, however, all of those fears were allayed.
Nice as a football club was founded in 1904 and was one of the founding members of the French First Division. As you might be able to guess from the club’s full name, they were originally formed with a focus on athletics and gymnastics. That is something that the club have held onto throughout their history and even now the OGC in their name stands for Olympique Gymnaste Club.

Allianz Riviera Seating Plan and Where to Sit
The Allianz Riviera is designed in the bowl style that has now become de rigeur for modern stadiums. Even though it is in a bowl style it still has four sections and these are called Ray, Garibaldi, Populaire and Segurane. Ray is the stand that is located to the North, Garibaldi is in the East, Populaire is in the South and Segurane is in the West.
The stadium has three tiers that are separated by executive boxes and lounges. There are also numerous fan specific areas where supporters can get a drink and watch the football from. Away fans are located in the North-East corner of the stadium and will find perspex panels either side of them. The stadium has fantastic views, throughout, however, so you won’t be disappointed with wherever you end up sitting.
OGC Nice Ticket Prices
How much you’ll pay for tickets at the Allianz Riviera will depend on what game you’re going to see and where about in the ground you’re hoping to sit. As is often the case with games in modern leagues you’ll also find that tickets are categorised but general information isn’t easily obtainable.
How To Get OGC Nice Tickets
You can, of course, make online reservations through the club’s official website. That isn’t the only way to buy tickets, though, with the club’s official store in Nice also selling them. You can pick tickets up from the box office at the Allianz Riviera and there also the opportunity to buy tickets from the club’s remote sales outlets throughout the country. According to the club’s website these sales outlets include Carrefour, Leclerc, Fnac, Géant and Auchan. One thing to bear in mind, however, is that you’ll pay full price for your tickets from these locations.

Getting To Allianz Riviera
The Allianz Riviera is about 10 km to the West of the centre of Nice, but there are many excellent transport options to get you to and from the ground.
Train – If you want to get the train to Nice then you can do so reasonably easily, though it will take a while. You’ll get the train from London St. Pancras International to Paris before then catching an internal from the City of Love through to the Riviera. It will take about nine hours in total, though, so make sure you pack your sleeping pills!
Gare de Nice-Ville is the main station that serves the city of Nice. From there you can get a train to Saint-Augustin Station and either get shuttle bus to the ground or else another train to Saint-Isodore Station. The stadium is a ten minute walk from there.
Bus – There is a special match day service that runs from Nice’s city centre to the ground. The number 95 takes just under an hour to complete its journey and buses leave every five minutes or so. Alternatively the local buses numbered 9 and 10 also run to the stadium, though they take more like an hour and a quarter to get there so it’s not the most exciting alternative, to be honest.
Car – The Allianz Riviera is reasonably easy to access via by car. It is located by a motorway and a dual carriageway. If you’re on the A8 motorway then take Exit 52 and keep an eye out for the ground.
By Air – Arriving in Nice by plane is not only an easy option it’s also an exciting one. Nice Côte d’Azur Airport is the one you’ll be flying into and it serves over ten million passengers a year. The airport is about 7 km West of the city centre. You’ll be able to get the 98 shuttle bus to the centre of town from the airport.
Taxi – If you’re hoping to get a taxi from the airport to the ground then expect to pay something in the region of €20. It should take about 15 minutes, but if it takes longer because of traffic then you’ll obviously end up paying more!
Parking Near Allianz Riviera
There are over 11,000 parking spaces at the stadium itself, so that will be your number one port of call if you’re driving to the arena and looking for somewhere to park your car.

Pubs and bars near allianz riviera.
Much like with the hotels, the fact that Nice is such a desired location in the South of France means that there are plenty of bars and restaurants for you to consider visiting before you head to the ground. Most of them are in the centre of the city, though, so don’t head to the ground unless you want to get a drink and bite to eat inside it.
Brewdog Nice
The Allianz Riviera has all of the top-class facilities you’d expect from one of the most modern stadiums in the country. You’ll be able to buy food and drink inside the ground and the atmosphere you’ll experience will be one of the best around. There are also nice concourses with grandstands from which you can watch the football unimpeded.
Hospitality
There are a number of excellent hospitality options at the Allianz Riviera. The club has VIP lodges that it uses to house those supporters that want to splash out in order to experience the very best in hospitality. You’ll benefit from attentive service, excellent cuisine and access to your VIP rooms after the match.
The catering at the ground is done by Lenôtre and can be enjoyed before, during and after the game. You’ll also get a private, underground parking space for every two tickets you buy. If you attend for matches against premier opposition such as PSG or Olympique Marseille then you’ll receive a souvenir gift from the club as well.
Private Hire
As one of the newest stadiums in France there’s no question that there are private hire options at the Allianz Riviera. If you fancy then you’ll also want to consider hiring space at the National Sports Museum. There you’ll be able to host cocktail receptions, dinners, seminars, symposiums and even film screenings in an 80-seat auditorium.
Stadium Tours & Museum
Guided tours of the Allianz Riviera last for about an hour and cost €13 for adults and €9 for everyone else. Children under five can enter the tour for free.
About OGC Nice
Olympique Gymnaste Club Nice Côte d’Azur have won Ligue 1 four times and the Coupe de France on three different occasions. Most of the club’s success was achieved in the 1950s when they were managed by numerous different people including the Englishman William Berry. Their most recent success was the winning of their third Coupe de France trophy in 1997.
Nice were one of the founding members of Ligue 1, the top-tier of French Football. They finished 7th in the league’s inaugural season. The club adopted their black and red colours in 1919 when they merged with a local club called Gallia Football Athlétic Club. The club’s biggest rivalry is with AS Monaco, another club on the South coast of France with whom they compete in the Derby de la Côte d’Azur.
Allianz Riviera History
The Allianz Riviera was only completed in 2013, so its history isn’t exactly rich and wonderful. During the building phase it was called Grand Stade de Nice and the financing for the ground came from both public and private money. The sponsorship deal with the insurance firm Allianz was announced in 2012, with the name Allianz Riviera assigned to the ground later that year.
The arena hosted three of the group matches in the first round as well as one of the last 16 matches during the 2016 UEFA European Championships. Whenever it is used for a UEFA match it is known as the Stade de Nice. Wilmotte & Associés, the company that designed the stadium, also designed the Kaliningrad Stadium in Russia and the Longchamp Racecourse in Paris. Nice were originally keen to develop their old ground, the Stade du Ray, but when they began investigating the possibility of this it soon became clear that a brand new stadium would be the best solution for the club and the city.
Future Developments
Owing to the fact that the stadium was only completed in 2013 it is unlikely that any further developments will take place there in the foreseeable future. The area around the ground was developed in the build-up to the Euros in the summer of 2016, but little else is likely for the time being.

OGC Nice – Match Day Experience – Allianz Riviera Stadium
Watch an OGC Nice game at the Allianz Riviera stadium
OGC Nice play at the Allianz Riviera stadium on the outskirts of Nice. Reasons to visit the Allianz Riviera whilst in Nice are;
- Visit a modern stadium
- You’re a huge OGC Nice fan
- Watch the eagle circle the stadium before the match
- Marseille, Monaco and Paris SG often visit the stadium
- Visit the stadium where England lost to Iceland
- To take a stadium and museum tour
You can buy matchday tickets online from the official site . It’s unlikely you’ll have to buy your tickets in advance and it’s easy to buy them at the stadium before entry. Only if they are playing Paris SG, Marseille or Monaco would it be better to buy your ticket in advance. Tickets start at €10 and as it’s a modern stadium every seat has a good view. If there’s no match on when you are visiting you could take a stadium tour.
The Allianz Riviera stadium is located in the suburbs of Nice. It’s also known as the Stade de Nice. Although it’s located outside the city it is very easy to get to. Free buses are provided from around the city (see below). There is also a tram line which is due to open very soon.
If you’re not a football fan, the good news is this stadium also hosts concerts. Celine Dion performed here in 2017.
You would not expect Nice to have such a huge modern stadium. The stadium opened in 2013 and holds over 35,000 spectators. One of the reasons they have this stadium is because it was a major stadium in the Euro 2016 tournament. This is the stadium in which Iceland famously beat England 2-1. Other top teams which played here in this tournament were, Spain, Sweden and Belgium.
OGC Nice Eagle
The nickname of OGC Nice is Les Aiglons. This translates into English as ‘The Eaglets’ or young eagles. Before the match an eagle will fly around the stadium. If you are visiting the Allianz Riviera with kids they may enjoy this more than the football match! As part of the pre match build up the fans will sing the club hymn, Nissa la Bella. This is to Nice what singing ‘You’ll never walk alone’ is to Liverpool .
The eagle flying around the stadium before the match is something which also happens at Benfica .
Pre Match line up
After the excitement of the eagle flying around the stadium, the teams will appear. They walk out from the dug out and line up for photos. They will be accompanied by child mascots. If you’re planning a visit in advance with your kids, you could email the club. Let them know you are traveling from far away and it would be special for your children to walk out with the team. Who knows, you may get lucky! After the pre match line up, it’s time for the kick off.
Matchday Atmosphere
The fans are excited when the game kicks off. All you need to hope for is a good game. OGC Nice regularly play in Europe as well as against the best French teams. Against the lower French teams (like Dijon) you’ll see lots of spare seats (above). Where else in the world can you be guaranteed a seat for €10 in a world class modern stadium? There are plenty of kiosks selling snacks, hot dogs, french fries, Pepsi and beer. Whatever happens during the match you won’t be hungry.
I must confess I had not heard of most of the Nice or Dijon players. In fact I never knew Dijon had a football team before the match. Dijon is more famous for its mustard than its football. This season Mario Balotelli was playing for Nice. As when he played for Manchester City he missed a lot of chances. He did however score a penalty before being sent off late in the game. The match finished Nice 1-0 Dijon.
How to get to the Allianz Riviera stadium from Nice?
On matchday free buses are provided to the stadium. The bus leaves from the Hotel des Postes stop near Place Massena. They operate from 2 hours before the match starts. There are machines to verify your ticket but as this is a free service you do not need a ticket or need to verify a ticket. Depending on traffic it can take 30 minutes to an hour to reach the stadium.
The process of getting back to Nice is very similar to getting there. You take the same 95 bus which is labelled Nice Centre Ville. After the match there will be lots of buses lined up so make sure you get on the right one. When you reach Place Massena the bus will go a different way due to the one way system. It’s probably easier to get off at the Albert 1er stop.

Another stadium article, and a great read too! Not sure I would have included the bit about Celine Dion performing here! I’m kidding. This looks like a really energetic stadium, and something different and local to see when in Nice.
I am both a football fan and a concert fan so Allianz Riviera stadium sure fits my taste. Eagle flying around the playground before a match start is pretty iconic. Thanks for writing on this offbeat niche!
Wow, admitted I’m not the biggest sports fan, that stadium is designed beautifully! I will definitely have to stop by for a concert next time I am in the area. I love that you show us how to get there too, sometimes that gets pretty confusing. Free buses on game day are a definite bonus! Sounds like you had an awesome time at the game, go Dijon!
I am not an OGC Nice fan, but I do love the idea of seeing an eagle fly around pre-game! My family all went to Auburn University in the US, and they do the same thing before the games. If they had taken me to a football game before I had to choose my college, I probably would’ve ended up there instead! I haven’t been to Nice yet, but I’ll have to hit up a soccer match while I’m there!
I visited this stadium to watch England play Iceland – it brings back those crazy memories! I remember we took the free bus 95 on that day and the traffic was terrible as you’d imagine for such a big match. It took us an hour to get there! Of course the stadium was full, later in Nice they closed all the bars as they didn’t want the England fans to cause any trouble. I’d love to watch a regular Ligue 1 game when I return to see how it compares.
I don’t watch soccer…. nor did I know what the OGC Nice were but it’s interesting to see what goes on at a soccer game. I really like how you presented a multitude of reasons to go and visiting a modern stadium and museum would definitely be up there on my list! Plus I wouldn’t mind watching a soccer game just for the experience. Sounds like you had a great time!
I am not a big football fan, but this Allianz Rivetia stadium from Nice is really beautiful and modern styled stadium. The ritual of flying an eagle before starting of match sounds unique. I would love to include my kids in child mascots for walking with team. Also ticket price starting from 10 Euro is a good deal.
As a Dutch reader I’d love to visit the stadium where Iceland beat England! It makes me feel better because we didn’t make it to the world cup next year! Having said that I’d like to see Nice play, they nearly won the Ligue 1 last year!
Hi Willem, the Iceland game will never be forgotten! Let’s hope Nice play well again this season so they have Champions League football here.
This must have been an awesome experience, James! I’m not so much into football, but this Allianz Riveria stadium seems spectacular! 😉

The Allianz Riviera is a nice stadium located in nice, home of Ligue 1 football side, OGC Nice.
The ground built in 2011-2013 has a capacity of 35,624 and replaces the city’s former stadium Stade Municipal du Ray which was much smaller with room for just under 19,000 fans.
Nice Stadium Guide
Allianz riviera history.
Between the years of 1927 and 2013 Nice played their home matches at the 18,696 capacity Stade Municpal du Ray which was popular for it’s location in the city centre but ultimately suffered due to it’s small capacity and lack of potential for growth, with a renovation project in 1997 not enough to save the future of Stade du Ray.
Consequently in 2002, the club began to formulate plans to relocate to a new home but with local politicians questioning the viability of the stadium, work was set to begin four years later in July 2006 but was once again delayed due to allegations of price fixing ticket prices directed at those involved with the project.
Fortunately, the new Deputy Mayor of Nice, Christian Estrosi mediated and helped push through construction of the stadium by 2011, still at the same Nice-Lingostière location.
Once Grand Stade de Nice was chosen to be included as part of the Euro 2016 bid , there weren’t ever any doubts that the project wouldn’t be completed on time with construction completed on September 2013, just in time for the new football season in France.
The inaugural league match was held between Nice and Valenciennes with the home side kicking things off in style winning 4 nil.
After the €245 million state-of-the-art stadium was complete, it was dubbed “Olympic Nice Stadium”, at least until German insurance company Allianz acquired the naming rights for the next 9 years at a cost of 1.8 million euros per year and decided to name Allianz Riviera, which actually sounds quite nice, nicer than The Allianz Arena .

Away fans are housed within the north-east corner of the stadium which is fenced off by two sections of perspex panels. Visitors to the stadium are in for a fantastic football experience as the Allianz Arena offers flawless views throughout regardless of where you are sat.
Best Pubs near ground
Located out of town unfortunately there aren’t too many pubs within the immediate vicinity of the stadium however the beautiful city centre of Nice is brimming with boozers waiting to be discovered.
The map below outlines some of the most football friendly ones.
Food - Places to eat
The Allianz Riviera is part of a wider commercial complex, with a nearby shopping centre owned by Vinci Immobilier offering fans a way to kill time before the match, in addition to the arena which has several (22?) dining options within it’s vicinity.
For local Mediterranean cuisine stick with Nice City centre.
Nice Club Shop
OGC Nice appear to operate a single store on their website in addition to this dedicated Online boutique .
Opening Hours:
- Monday to Saturday: 10.00 am – 7.00pm
- Sundays: Closed
Can you take a stadium Tour?
At the moment there are no stadium tours for Allianz Riviera but the management behind the stadium are planning on implementing them at some point in late 2015.
For now an alternative is Museum of National Sports , which whilst isn’t strictly a football or Nice related set of memorabilia, may be of interest to some sports fans. The Musee National Du Sport opened it’s doors on July 5th 2014 and for more information you can email [email protected] .
How to buy Nice Tickets
Tickets to see Olympique Gymnaste Club Nice can either be purchased online or in person at either the Allianz or at various ticket vendors such as Francebillet and Ticketnet throughout Nice.
Prices start at a generous €10.00 for something behind the goal and an average of €50.00 for a central location in the main stand. Y
ou should know by now that prices increase for high profile matches such as during the Derby de la Côte d’Azur against AS Monaco.
How to get to Allianz Riviera
Where is allianz riviera.
The Allianz Riviera Stadium is located in the outer city limits approximately 10km west of Nice city centre along the right hand bank of Le Var river.
Allianz Stadium is conveniently located just off of a large motorway and series of dual carriageways which means that it is highly accessible by car. Exit 52 on the A8 motorway will take you to the stadium.
Address: Boulevard des Jardiniers , 06206 Nice
Some fans recommend exiting off at 51 for less restricted parking spaces, however according to the official website the stadium boasts over 11,000 spaces which fans can use on matchdays for a few euros.
Train - Public Transport
The main train station of the city Gare de Nice-Ville offers a range of national and local routes which can take you to the stadium on matchday.
You can either catch the train to Saint-Augustin station and then a shuttle bus to the Allianz Riviera Stade or the commuter train to Saint-Isodore station where it is a 10 minute walk to the ground.
Public Transport of Allianz Riviera
Nice Côte d’Azur Airport lies 5km South of the Allianz on the Mediterranean coast, and approximately 7km West of the historic city centre.
Serving over 10.5 million passengers a year Nice Côte d’Azur is the fourth busiest airport in France with plans underway to expand outwards to sea through land reclamation which will allow the addition of additional runways.
Once you have landed you can get to the city centre by taking either the 98 or 98 shuttle bus service which costs €6 and will take you to the central train station.
Hotels Near Allianz Riviera
The two closest hotels to Stade Allianz Riviera and accessible by foot are the pricey Servotel Nice (£120+) and the more affordable Kyriad Hotel (£50).
If you have a car and have an early flight to catch the next day you could always head back to the airport where there are numerous options such as Radisson Blu and Hotel Ibis.
Going back towards Nice City centre there are way too many hotels to list, with it advisable from me that you work out what you want to be near to and then take a look at Google maps.
