The excruciatingly awkward moment when Tom Cruise berated veteran Nine journalist Peter Overton and told him to “put your manners back in” during a 60 Minutes interview is once again doing the rounds.

Though it is 17 years after it first aired in Australia, the infamous clip was tweeted by LA-based user @responsiblerob on Friday, and has since attracted 2.2 million views.

As many Australians may remember, in 2005, Overton sat down for an interview with the Hollywood star, but their conversation took an uncomfortable turn when he broached the subject of his ex-wife, Nicole Kidman, from whom Cruise had split four years earlier.

“Is Nicole the love of your life?” the Australian journalist asked, sparking a strong reaction from Cruise.

“What do you mean, Peter? Listen we raise children, you know … I mean, how do you answer that question?” he fired back.

When Overton pressed further and asked what sort of relationship the pair had following their divorce, Cruise snapped.

“You’re stepping over the line now. You’re stepping over the line, and you know you are,” he replied, while glaring at Overton.

The journalist argued that they were questions that “people want to know”, which Cruise rubbished.

“Peter. Peter. You want to know. Take responsibility for what you want to know. I’m just telling you right now, OK, just put your manners back in.”

“Do you think I was out of line?” a perplexed Overton asked, with Cruise replying simply: “Yes, absolutely.”

“Well, I apologise for that sincerely,” the Nine presenter told him.

Overton addressed the infamous interview on the Kyle and Jackie O show in 2020, insisting he held “no ill will” towards Cruise, despite their uncomfortable exchange.

“What were you thinking back then? When you’re being rubbished on camera by Tom Cruise? Are you thinking to yourself, how do I look respectful, but also still in charge of the interview?” host Kyle Sandilands asked him.

Overton replied: “I just maintained who I am, and I didn’t get angry. He did. And I just kept true to myself and said it’s a fair question. I hold no ill will towards Tom. It was one of those moments.”

Peter Overton has spoken about his infamous interview with Hollywood actor Tom Cruise, which aired on 60 Minutes in 2005.

On Thursday, the veteran journalist, 54, was asked about their tense encounter on The Kyle and Jackie O Show .

During the exclusive sit-down, the 58-year-old Mission: Impossible star had told Overton to ‘put your manners back in’.

Cruise got snappy with the journalist when he asked a question about his ex-wife Nicole Kidman, who happens to be Overton’s childhood friend.

The star grew frustrated with the line of questioning and told Overton that he was ‘stepping over the line’ and to ‘put his manners back in’.

Radio host Kyle Sandilands asked: ‘What were you thinking back then? When you’re being rubbished on camera by Tom Cruise? Are you thinking to yourself, how do I look respectful, but also still in charge of the interview?’

‘I hold no ill-will towards Tom. It was one of those moments,’ he added.

Keep your friends close and your enemies... nowhere near you. Tom Cruise attended the premiere of his film Mission Impossible - Dead Reckoning Part One last week in Sydney, Australia. To ensure that the event went off without a hitch, Cruise cherry-picked reporters who were on the red carpet. And noticeably rejected from the group was a 60 Minutes reporter Cruise clashed with nearly 20 years ago.

Last week, Cruise walked the red carpet for Mission Impossible on the same day he turned 61. He was reportedly in good spirits and looked cool, calm, and collected. However, sources say that much like with the 2023 Oscars that were skipped , Cruise had some "anxious" moments in the days leading up to the premiere.

These moments specifically surrounded coming into contact with people who were close with Cruise's ex-wife, Nicole Kidman, and those reporters he knew would try to make the evening uncomfortable by bringing her up in conversation. As such, Cruise took steps to ensure this did not happen . He "wanted the spotlight on his film, not his past." And this included barring specific reporters from the red carpet.

One of those reporters was Peter Overton from 60 Minutes. And given that Cruise has not spoken with Overton since a 2005 interview went sour, it is clear that the apologies Overton gave at the time have yet to be accepted.

What Happened During The '60 Minutes' Interview Between Tom Cruise And Peter Overton

In 2005, Cruise was doing press for his latest movie, War of the Worlds . At this time, he was several years removed from his divorce from Kidman, and by the mid-part of the year would be officially dating Katie Holmes. As such, talking about his ex-wife was the last thing that Cruise was prepared to do. And when Overton, a childhood friend of Kidman's began that line of questioning, the interview went south quickly.

Overton began the interview with pleasantries. However, the conversation quickly jumped into the topic of Scientology, which set a defensive tone for the remainder of the interview. As such, when Overton began a line of questioning about Kidman, Cruise let him know in no uncertain terms that he felt the journalist was out of line .

"When you were married, it was like you were an adopted part of Australia," Overton stated. "Do you still have a connection to Australia?"

"Yeah. My children are Australian. Absolutely. Absolutely," Cruise replied. "I have a lot of friends in Australia. I love Australia."

"Was Nicole the love of your life?" Overton asked.

"Listen, we raised children, I ... you know ... I mean, how do you answer that question?" Cruise asked. "She's someone that I ... I plan on getting married again."

"But Nicole was a major part of your life and a love of your life at the time?" Overton asked.

"I loved Nic very much, there's no question," Cruise stated.

"And do you have a relationship where you talk — a parenting relationship — and talk professionally about each other's..." Overton began.

"Listen, here's the thing, Peter," Cruise explained. "You're stepping over a line now. You're stepping over a line, you know you are."

"I suppose they're questions that people want to know," Overton replied.

"Peter, you want to know. Take responsibility for what you want to know," Cruise said. "Don't say what other people… This is a conversation that I'm having with you right now. So I'm just telling you right now, okay, just put your manners back in."

Overton would go on to apologize to Cruise for his questioning. However, it was clear by the coldness of the replies from Cruise for the remainder of the interview that the damage was done. It never would have been anticipated though, that the interview would have led to Overton being banned from the red carpet 18 years later.

Peter Overton Was Not The Only Reporter Tom Cruise Scratched Off The Red Carpet List

Tom Cruise on the red carpet

To ensure that Cruise had a bubble around him for the entirety of his red-carpet interviews, there were other journalists that he made sure were not invited to the event. And one of those people was none other than Live from E!'s Lucia Hawley, who also happens to be Kidman's niece.

"Tom didn't want any dramas, nor any reminders of his time as 'Mr. Kidman," a source close to Cruise explained, according to Woman's Day.

The source went on to say, "Visiting Australia with Nic and their kids was the first time in his life he felt part of something bigger than his career. It will always be an emotional return for him."

RELATED: How Tom Cruise's First Mission: Impossible Co-Star Emmanuelle Beart Realy Felt About Working Alongside The Actor

"Tom's team weren't taking any chances, and if Lucia's name had been down as attending, Tom would have vetoed it," the source said. "Lucia must have known it was inappropriate for her to be there. Nicole wouldn't have approved of that, either."

As such, it appears that everyone wanted to ensure that the premiere went off without a hitch. And from all reports, they did with no journalists stepping off script and Cruise keeping his cool with the questions he was asked on the red carpet.

The Aussie Journo Who Was Reportedly ‘Barred’ From An Event By Tom Cruise Breaks His Silence

peter overton interview tom cruise

ICYMI: According to Woman’s Day , Tom — or at least, Tom’s people — made sure that esteemed Aussie television journalist was excluded from the guest list because the actor is apparently still miffed about *that* infamous 2005 interview.

“Anyone connected to ‘That Interview’ was scratched off [the list], and Peter Overton was certainly among the people who didn’t get an invite,” the source claimed.

“Tom wanted the spotlight on his film, not his past.”

This morning on   Fitzy & Wippa with Kate Ritchie , Overton confirmed that he was not invited, but that he would not have attended anyway because he had to werk.

“Did someone inform you that you are not welcome on the red carpet or is this story completely made up? Were you barred from the red carpet of Mission Impossible ?” Wippa asked.

“I wouldn’t have a clue about…” he responded, adding that: “We didn’t get an invite. But I also had another thing to do: the six o’clock news.”

In case ya haven’t seen it, there’s an absolute corker of a 60 Minutes interview from Cruise’s 2005 jaunt to Australia which happened to occur just after his split from Aussie queen Nicole Kidman .

After Overton asked Cruise about his ex, the actor told the reporter that he’s “stepping over the line, and you know you are.”

He also instructed Overton to “put your manners back in.”

Watch the interview below, which has gone down in awks interview history:

During the radio chat, Overton went on to discuss just how iconic that interview has gone on to be.

“It certainly caused a stir,” he said.

“Every now and then it pops up. And you know, I’ve always said I like Tom, I think he’s amazing what he’s done with Top Gun Maverick . I’ve seen that a couple of times. Mission Impossible I can’t wait to see. And the bottom line is, he’s a great actor, what he’s done for Hollywood, you know, in a really tough period with COVID and so on. He has put the big screen movies back in the cinemas in a huge way. And we’re all going to see them.”

Was Petey boi crossing a line by asking Tom Cruise such personal questions? Look, probably.

But the fact that Tom has been biding his time since 2005, waiting to get his revenge on Overton by barring him from questions, cocktails and canapés is absolutely hysterical.

I’m sure believing in astrology is one of the many things that scientology opposes, but as PTV’s resident astrologer, I must point out that Tom Cruise is a Cancer. AKA a grudge-holding water sign.

Fans Had A Lot Of Opinions About This 60 Minutes Interview With Tom Cruise

Tom Cruise at event

Tom Cruise had quite the year in 2022. Appearing as Maverick once more in  "Top Gun: Maverick,"  the sequel earned him what is now his highest-grossing movie of all-time (via Deadline ). That's certainly impressive given that Cruise has been one of the biggest movie stars on the planet for decades, releasing major blockbusters over the years from the "Mission: Impossible" series to "The Last Samurai." But it was the late 1980s and the 1990s that truly catapulted Cruise to fame with movies like "Rain Man," "Days of Thunder," "A Few Good Men," "The Firm," "Jerry Maguire," and "Eyes Wide Shut" (via IMDb ). In fact, two of his three Academy Award nominations would come from that era, both for Best Actor in a Leading Role on "Born on the Fourth of July" and "Jerry Maguire."

Cruise's popularity as a leading man certainly didn't fade there, as the early 2000s would see him continue to make popular movies with "Minority Report," "Collateral," and "Valkyrie." However, the mid-2000s would see Cruise deal with a lot of attention on his personal life.  His love life was being particularly investigated by the media, along with his faith in Scientology. He had many interviewers ask about his split with former wife Nicole Kidman , to who he was married from 1990 to 2001 (via Us Weekly ).

Ultimately, Cruise would sit down to speak about his life in one specific "60 Minutes" interview that fans still seem to have a lot of opinions about.

Fans notice Tom Cruise's clear disdain for his 60 Minutes interview in 2005

Tom Cruise on 60 Minutes Australia

According to a recent thread on Reddit , fans of Tom Cruise still have a lot of opinions about an interview the actor did with "60 Minutes Australia" and journalist Peter Overton back in 2005. U/BurgandyBurgerBugle posted the video with the caption, "Tom Cruise hates this interviewer." The interview became infamous over the years due to the clear tension after Overton asked some questions that Cruise feels are ill-mannered. "60 Minutes Australia" reposted the interview on YouTube in 2018 and the video currently has over 3 million views.

Other fans believe the questions feel inappropriate. A since-deleted user said, "Like Tom Cruise or not, a lot of those questions were incredibly inappropriate." U/oakattack agreed, explaining that many shows don't care what they ask their celebrity guests. "60 Minutes, A Current Affair, and Today Tonight have no concerns to what they ask their guests. They'll either corner them or straight out ask inappropriate questions, get a massive reaction and then do everything they can to shame the celebrity."

However, other fans like u/JOsorio246 took the position that Overton was simply doing what a journalist is meant to do by asking those questions. They said, "the purpose of journalism is not to be ”appropriate” or ”inappropriate” it's to ask honest challenging questions. It's ignorant to say that perception does not exist in the public perception."

Either way, this interview still stands as one of many celebrity interviews gone wrong over the years.

Tom Cruise Told An Interviewer He Stepped Out Of Line Asking A Question About Nicole Kidman

  • Tom Cruise showed frustration during an interview with 60 Minutes Australia when asked about his ex-wife Nicole Kidman, warning the interviewer to "put your manners back in."
  • Rumors suggest that Tom Cruise might have banned the interviewer from the Mission: Impossible premiere, as the two hadn't spoken since the controversial interview.
  • The interviewer, Peter Overton, does not regret asking about Nicole Kidman and believes it was a fair question, while Nicole Kidman herself prefers to be open but has become more cautious over time.

Over the years, fans have witnessed Tom Cruise interviews taking an extreme turn. That was the case during Cruise's iconic interview with Oprah Winfrey . He also had fans talking following a chat with David Letterman on the Late Show . Cruise was compared to Christian Bale's American Psycho character following the interview.

In the following, we're going to take a look at yet another questionable interview. However, in this case, it seems like 60 Minutes interviewer Peter Overton crossed a line, asking Tom about Nicole Kidman , despite the fact that they were separated at the time. It wasn't just one question, as the host pressed on the topic. Cruise wasn't pleased, and issued a warning to the host.

Let's take a look at how it all went down between the two.

Tom Cruise Wasn't Pleased When The 60 Minutes Interviewer Kept Pressing About Questions Regarding Ex-Nicole Kidman

During his interview with 60 Minutes Australia, Tom Cruise clearly wasn't ready for a question asked by the host Peter Overton. Following their divorce, Overtone might've overstepped, asking Cruise if Nicole Kidman was the love of his life.

Cruise instantly made a face after he was asked the question, replying, "What do you mean Peter?" He continues, "How do you answer that question."

The interview would take a turn after the question was asked, with Cruise clearly becoming frustrated. Instead of taking the hint, Overton continues to ask personal questions, like if he wants Nicole Kidman to be happy, and if they're still in contact with each other, and give one another career advice.

At this point, Tom had enough. He says, "You're stepping over a line now. You know you are. Peter, you want to know, take responsibility for what you want to know. I'm telling you right now, put you manners back in."

Overton would ask if he was out of line and apologize for the moment... However, it seems like the apology wasn't too sincere given his words in the years that followed. As for Tom Cruise, well he might've hung on that grudge.

Rumors Suggest Tom Cruise Banned The 60-Minutes Interviewer From The Mission: Impossible Premiere

According to Variety Australia , Tom Cruise might've snubbed Peter Overton an invitation for the Mission: Impossible premiere. Overton did comment on the matter, revealing that hadn't spoken to Tom Cruise in years, pretty much since the interview took place. Overton downplayed the situation, stating that he still has lots of respect for Cruise, despite the way the interview went between them.

“No, we didn’t get an invite, but I also had another thing to do – the 6 o’clock news. Every now and then [the interview] pops up, but you know, I’ve always said, I like Tom. I think it’s amazing what he’s done with “Top Gun: Maverick“. I’ve seen that a couple of times. “Mission Impossible”, I can’t wait to see."

Overton continues, “And the bottom line is, he’s a great actor, what he’s done for Hollywood in a really tough period with COVID and so on, is he has put the big-screen movies back in the cinema in a huge way, and we’re all going to see them.”

Of course, Tom Cruise didn't comment on the matter but in truth, Overton didn't help his cause following the interview either. Instead of apologizing for what had taken place. the host stood his ground in terms of what he asked Cruise, despite clearly stepping a line.

Peter Overton Doesn't Regret Asking Tom Cruise About Nicole Kidman

During her time on The Kyle and Jackie O Show , Peter Overton got the chance to make things right, addressing his interview with Tom Cruise . He asked by host Kyle Sandilands, "What were you thinking back then? When you're being rubbished on camera by Tom Cruise? Are you thinking to yourself, how do I look respectful, but also still in charge of the interview?"

Overton explained that he didn't show regret for the moment and still felt as though it was a fair question to ask. "I just maintained who I am, and I didn't get angry. He did. And I just kept true to myself and said it's a fair question. I hold no ill will towards Tom. It was one of those moments."

As for Nicole Kidman, she has rarely spoken about her relationship with Tom Cruise. However, she did reveal to being too open about her relationship back in the day. "I was young. I think I offered it up? Maybe I've gotten a bit more trepidatious, but I'm always trying to be as open as possible. I just prefer to live in the world that way."

She continues, "I'm wary at times, and I've been hurt, but at the same time I much prefer a warm approach rather than a prickly shutdown approach."

As expected, both sides haven't said much else about their relationship. The two have clearly moved on since then.

Peter Overton Addresses Rumours Tom Cruise Banned Him From ‘Mission Impossible’ Premiere After Controversial Interview

Tom Cruise and Peter Overton

Nine Network journalist Peter Overton has come out in defence of Tom Cruise, hailing both his skills as an actors and his role in reviving cinema.

The endorsement of the Hollywood icon comes after rumours that Cruise and his team banned Overton from attending the “Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part One” premiere in Sydney last week and from interviewing Cruise on the red carpet.

The feud reportedly stems from a 2005 “60 Minutes” interview between the two, in which tensions flare over Overton’s line of questioning about Cruise’s split from Nicole Kidman and how the two will continue to communicate and care for their children.

During the interview, which occasionally resurfaces in the tabloids and social media, Cruise told Overton he was “stepping over the line” and implored him to “take responsibility” for his line of questioning. He also told Overton to “put your manners back in”.

Overton was absent from the film’s premiere this year , which was attended by many other news anchors, entertainment reporters and media identities. His absense has given rise to a rumour that he was ‘banned’ from attending due to his conduct in 2005.

Overton has now spoken about the rumours and conceded that he was not invited.

“I wouldn’t have a clue,” he told Nova Sydney’s breakfast radio program “Fitzy and Wippa with Kate Ritchie” when asked if he was banned from the event. “No, we didn’t get an invite, but I also had another thing to do – the 6 o’clock news,” he said, in reference to his role as anchor of Nine’s nightly news bulletin.

Overton conceded that he hadn’t spoken to Cruise in the 18 years since the interview, but said he continued to admire his work and what he had achieved for cinema from a distance.

“Every now and then [the interview] pops up, but you know, I’ve always said, I like Tom. I think it’s amazing what he’s done with “ Top Gun: Maverick “. I’ve seen that a couple of times. “Mission Impossible”, I can’t wait to see.

“And the bottom line is, he’s a great actor, what he’s done for Hollywood in a really tough period with COVID and so on, is he has put the big-screen movies back in the cinema in a huge way, and we’re all going to see them.”

Overton told the trio he would definitely be attending the “Mission Impossible” film and thought Cruise was fantastic to still be doing his own stunts and creating the kind of cinema he is today.

The film’s writer and director Christopher McQuarrie has been similarly impassioned about Cruise’s role in saving big cinema .

“The person I want to compliment is the person who will always dodge the compliments. It’s this man, Mr. Tom Cruise. When this whole process started four years ago, we were entering a period where it looked like this event was headed for extinction. It was a very real possibility that this medium that we loved so much was on its way out. One person said, ‘No, we’re gonna keep it going’. And that’s this man right here,” McQuarrie said.

When approached by Variety Australia , Nine denied its star presenter was banned from the premiere. Paramount Pictures, the distributor of the film, did not respond to a request for comment.

Who is Peter Overton? Tom Cruise 'barred' journalist from red carpet at 'Mission: Impossible 7' premiere

SYDNEY, AUSTRALIA: Tom Cruise reportedly "barred" journalist Peter Overton from attending the 'Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part One' premiere in Sydney, Australia, last week, 18 years after the actor had a heated exchange with the Channel Nine presenter during the infamous '60 Minutes' interview. Back in 2005, the duo came together for the interview to discuss Cruise's film 'War of the Worlds' but Overton left the latter disappointed after asking him about ex-wife Nicole Kidman .

At the time, Cruise even accused Overton of "crossing the line." As per Woman's Day , Cruise personally looked into his 'MI 7' Sydney red carpet guest list to make sure his trip to Australia remained free of controversies. "Anyone connected to 'That Interview' was scratched off, and Peter Overton was certainly among the people who didn't get an invite," a source told the publication. "Tom wanted the spotlight on his film, not his past," the insider added.

He was born on April 5, 1966, in England and moved to Australia with his parents at the age of two. Overton also presented weekend news bulletins at times and substituted for Sharyn Ghidella on National Nine Early News and Today News.

He also became an occassional substitute for Jim Waley on Nightline and the co-host of Nine Network's coverage of the Thredbo disaster with Tracy Grimshaw. Overton went on to become a reporter for the current affairs show '60 Minutes' and served the role for eight years. He also held positions at 2UE, Sky News Australia and the Seven Network in Adelaide. Overton was appointed presenter of Nine News Sydney as a replacement for Mark Ferguson in 2009.

What happened between Peter Overton and Tom Cruise?

The tension between Cruise and Overton erupted during a 2005 interview when the 'Top Gun: Maverick' star appeared on '60 Minutes' to talk about his film 'War of the Worlds'. During the interview, which took place shortly after Cruise's divorce from Kidman, Overton asked if the 'Batman Forever' star was the "love of his life." After Cruise replied, "I love Nic very much, there's no question, Overton further pressed, "And do you have a relationship where you talk, it's a parenting relationship, and talk professionally about each other's work?"

Cruise then cut off the reporter, saying, "Listen, here's the thing Peter, you're stepping over a line now, you know you are." When Overton attempted to convince the actor saying the questions revolve around "what people want to know," Cruise said, "Peter. You want to know. Take responsibility for what you want to know. Don't say 'what other people,' this is a conversation I'm having with you right now. So I'm just telling you right now. Just put your manners back in."

When Overton asked if Cruise thought he was "out of line," the latter replied saying, "Yes, absolutely!" The reported then "sincerely apologized" for his question and moved forward with the interview. However, last year Overton told Nine News that he still thinks the questions were "fair." "That was a hell of an interview, I'll never forget it. I held my own and I was happy about that. I didn't change, that's who I am. I thought they were fair questions," he added.

Overton and his wife Rowe are also known to be Kidman's best friends. The pair even attended a grand Christmas party at Kidman and her husband Keith Urban's Sydney penthouse last year.

Tom Cruise 'banned' Peter Overton from Mission Impossible red carpet over old feud

Tom Cruise was said to be very strict about who made the list for the Mission Impossible red carpet, and Peter Overton didn't make the cut thanks to That 60 Minutes interview

Tom Cruise and Peter Overton haven't been on good terms in quite some time

  • 14:36, 10 Jul 2023

It feels like ancient pop culture lore, but Tom Cruise and Peter Overton have an 18-year running beef that Cruise hasn't forgotten about.

While promoting War of the Worlds back in 2005, Cruise sat down with Overton for a special 60 Minutes interview. But it all took a turn for the worse, with Overton started asking about Cruise's ex-wife, Nicole Kidman. For Cruise, that seemed like a total invasion.

Cruise snapped at the journalist: "You're stepping over the line, and you know you are."

But it seems that even now, all these years later, Cruise isn't quite ready to forgive and forget.

A source told Now To Love said: "Anyone connected to 'That Interview' was scratched off, and Peter Overton was certainly among the people who didn't get an invite."

Now To Love reported that Cruise was very careful with his invite list for the this year's Mission Impossible red carpet. In an effort to keep it drama-free, he excluded Overton. The source claimed that Cruise was trying to keep this movie release very forward-focused, not wanting to bring up anything from his past.

The source said: "Visiting Australia with Nic and their kids was the first time in his life he felt part of something bigger than his career. It will always be an emotional return for him."

A reminder of his ex on this big day was sure to bring the energy down. With the premiere being in Australia, Cruise was in a country that was just one big memory of Kidman given the considerable amount of time they spent there together.

Overton wasn't the only absence in the typical press roundup. Typically, Lucia Hawley would be on the carpet covering for Live From E!. In many ways, she's the go-to for live celebrity overage in Australia. However, Hawley is Kidman's niece.

The source actually said that Cruise would have "vetoed" Hawley's RSVP, if one existed at all. Kidman, according to the source, wouldn't have wanted her there anyway and Hawley probably knew that.

It seems Tom Cruise hasn't forgotten about his notorious 60 Minutes interview with Channel Nine presenter Peter Overton 18 years ago.

Back in 2005, the pair sat down to talk about his movie War of the Worlds, but things turned sour when Overton probed a clearly annoyed Cruise about his ex-wife  Nicole Kidman .

Cruise lashed out at Overton and accused him of crossing a line.

According to a new report, the Hollywood star barred Overton from attending the Mission Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part One premiere in Sydney last week.

Woman's Day  claims Cruise, 61, wanted to make sure his recent trip to Australia was controversy-free so he took a personal interest in the red carpet guest list.

'Anyone connected to ''That Interview'' was scratched off, and Peter Overton was certainly among the people who didn't get an invite,' the source claimed.

'Tom wanted the spotlight on his film, not his past.'

The row between Cruise and Overton ignited during an infamous television interview in 2005, just after his much-publicised divorce from Nicole Kidman.

The actor admonished Overton on live television, stating, 'You're stepping over the line, and you know you are.'

He further advised the journalist to 'put your manners back in.'

Adding fuel to the fire, Overton and his wife, popular TV personality Jessica Rowe, are known to be close with Kidman.

The couple attended a lavish Christmas party at Kidman and her musician husband Keith Urban's swanky Sydney penthouse last year.

Cruise and Kidman separated in 2001 after 12 years of marriage amid rumours his commitment to Scientology had driven a wedge between them.

The couple adopted two children, daughter Isabella Jane in 1992 and son Connor Antony in 1995, but never had any biological children.

In the 2005 interview for 60 Minutes, Overton asked if Nicole was the 'love of his life'.

'I love Nic very much, there's no question,' Cruise replied.

'And do you have a relationship where you talk, it's a parenting relationship, and talk professionally about each other's work?' Overton pressed.

'Listen, here's the thing Peter,' an unimpressed Cruise cut in. 'You're stepping over a line now, you know you are.'

Overton tried to tell the actor that his questions are 'what people want to know'.

'Peter. You want to know. Take responsibility for what you want to know,' Cruise said.

'Don't say "what other people". This is a conversation I'm having with you right now. So I'm just telling you right now. Just put your manners back in.'

'Do you think I was out of line?' a slightly bemused Overton replied.

'Yes, absolutely,' Cruise hit back.

Cruise was pictured in Sydney over the weekend promoting his new film Mission Impossible - Dead Reckoning Part One.

In the movie, the actor performs one of his most dangerous stunts yet - driving a motorcycle off a cliff and then parachuting to the bottom of a mountain.

Tom Cruise Injects Some Hollywood Flash Into Olympic Closing Ceremony Handoff

The  Mission: Impossible  actor took the Olympic flag from gold medalist Simone Biles and L.A. Mayor Karen Bass before riding away into the night.

Tom Cruise is a man on a mission.

The 62-year-old actor was recruited by the organizers of the Summer Games to help in the handoff of the Olympic flag between Paris and Los Angeles officials at the Closing Ceremony on Sunday.

In an action-packed sequence, the actor repelled from the top of the Stade de France to grab the flag from Olympic gold medalist Simone Biles  and L.A. Mayor Karen Bass before climbing onto the back of his motorcycle and speeding through the City of Lights. He then took a high-speed flight to Los Angeles in record time and jumped out of the plane with his parachute. As he lands on the mountains above Los Angeles, he travels to the Hollywood sign, which is transformed to include the Olympic rings.

Olympic medalist skateboarder Jagger Eaton , mountain biker Kate Courtney, and track and field gold medalist Michael Johnson then have their turn carrying the Olympic flag. They skate, bike, and run through the streets of Santa Monica and pass by other iconic sites.

Eaton, Johnson, and Courtney's journey to L.A. ended on the beach, where the Red Hot Chili Peppers, Billie Eilish , and Snoop Dogg  were waiting to hold their own concert on the beach. The Red Hot Chili Peppers went first before handing off to Eilish and her brother Finneas, who performed her hit song "Birds of a Feather."

For the grand finale, Snoop Dogg rapped his song "Drop It Like It's Hot" and then brought out fellow West Coast rapper Dr. Dre to join him on the stage. The celebration ended with a blast of colors on the beach.

Following their performance, Leon Marchand brought the Olympic flame back to the Stade de France, where the flame was extinguished.

With the Paris Olympics officially over, the countdown to the Los Angeles Olympics has officially started. Come 2028, thousands of athletes will descend upon the City of Angels to go for the gold. And though the Games are just under four years away, the Los Angeles organizers have already announced the venues and locations of some sports . Included among those sites are the iconic L.A. Coliseum and the Inglewood Stadium (also known as the SoFi Stadium).

Let the countdown begin!

To see the Closing Ceremony in primetime tune in to Peacock or NBC at 7 p.m. ET/PT. Countdown to LA28 will air at the conclusion of the Closing Ceremony, at 10 p.m. ET/PT, and will be hosted by Venus Williams.

The Peculiar Joy of Watching Tom Cruise Jump From the Sky

Portrait of Bilge Ebiri

The most entertaining part of what we will call the Tom Cruise Movement of the Paris Olympics Closing Ceremony wasn’t so much the stunts. The live jump into the Stade de France was unremarkable for an event that had performers dropping from great heights all evening, and the prerecorded leap out of an airplane into Los Angeles didn’t quite have the razzle-dazzle of what he’s done in movies like Mission: Impossible — Fallout . Rather, it was the live moment — orchestrated, certainly — that immediately followed his arrival in the stadium, as Cruise walked through a gauntlet of Olympic athletes eager to hug, high-five, and take selfies with him. The actor is an old hand at red carpets by now, but he seemed genuinely surprised and charmed by this outpouring of love. How appropriate for the times we live in that people who achieve incredible feats of power and speed in real life would be so starstruck by someone who does them onscreen. It made some kind of thematic sense too. Cruise was there to carry the flag from Paris to Los Angeles, and this was an intriguing (and very Hollywood) reminder from the organizers of the upcoming 2028 Summer Olympics that while superhuman athletic achievement is nice and everything, celebrity trumps all.

I must admit, I found this whole spectacle strangely moving. It wasn’t so long ago that Cruise’s career seemed to be in free fall. We don’t need to spend much time on the sordid details — the notorious couch jump, the Matt Lauer interview, the Brooke Shields contretemps, the secretive and messy divorces, the Scientology of it all — but back in the late 2000s and early 2010s, it really did seem like American moviegoers (as well as critics, who had always kept him at a bit of a distance) had had enough of Cruise. Internationally, he remained a big draw, but Stateside he was becoming poison. If he hadn’t held onto some form of domestic box-office viability through the Mission: Impossible movies … who knows? He might be starring in on-demand action flicks and Exorcist pictures now.

That’s where stunts come in. This might be hard to remember, but Cruise hasn’t always been a stunt guy. He hadn’t even been an action guy. Sure, he enjoyed riding motorcycles and flying planes and all that stuff, but before the premiere of the first Mission: Impossible in 1996, there was a real question as to whether he could carry an action movie that didn’t feature fighter jets. There was a lot of buzz around him doing his own climbing during the opening sequence of Mission: Impossible 2 , but that was just his character Ethan Hunt relaxing, and free climbing was one of Cruise’s favorite sports.

The Watch Tom Do Stunts thing really kicked into high gear in 2011, with Mission: Impossible — Ghost Protocol and its now-immortal sequence atop and around and alongside and occasionally inside the Burj Khalifa. Importantly, this film came out shortly after a yearslong string of PR disasters for the actor, starting with his chaotic press tour for War of the Worlds. Stunts allowed Cruise to claw his way back into audiences’ good graces. These feats demanded attention because they had become increasingly elaborate and deadly: Tom Cruise hanging on the outside of a plane as it takes off. Tom Cruise running vertically down the tallest building in the world. Tom Cruise hanging off a helicopter then free-falling down the tow line. There was a quality of self-punishment to these actions. They came at just the right time and in just the right manner for this seemingly fallen movie star: They allowed him to suffer onscreen for our entertainment, and slowly win back the good will he had lost.

For those of us who witnessed this bizarre, one-of-a-kind, decades-long roller-coaster ride, it’s been enthralling to watch. And it’s hard not to see symbolism, be it real or imagined, everywhere in Sunday night’s event with Tom Cruise as the avatar of an international flag handoff. It kicked off in France with the adoration of athletes from the world over, a kind of acknowledgement of how Cruise remained popular overseas even as American audiences turned away from him. But then he biked down the streets of Paris, got on that plane, and sky-dived into Los Angeles, the sequence (at least the Cruise part) ending on one final, sublime crane shot of him standing atop the Hollywood sign. The last true movie star was back home.
