Saga Cruises (Saga Shipping Ltd, saga.co.uk/cruises) is a British company, luxury cruise brand and division of Saga Group. The company started passenger shipping operations under the travel brand name "Saga Cruises" in 1997, with the purchase of Saga Rose (former NCL ship MS Sagafjord), Saga Rose was the flagship until 2004 when Saga Ruby was bought from Cunard Line (previously named MS Caronia). Saga Travel's CEO is Nick Stace.

The shipowner Saga Group/Saga plc (1951-founded, headquartered in Folkestone, Kent England, UK) is a London Stock Exchange-listed company specializing in travel and insurance. Currently, Saga plc is managed by Mike Hazell (CEO) who in 2024 succeeded Euan Sutherland (2020-23).

Company history and changes

While on its final cruise in the Caribbean, Saga Ruby had one of its generators fail disabling the air-conditioning plant. Then it was decided to cancel the sailing and head for a Western Mediterranean itinerary. Saga Ruby returned to Southampton on Jan. 9, 2014 due to bad weather. While in Funchal Madeira, the ship met up with Saga Sapphire for New Year's Eve fireworks display. Saga Ruby then departed for Gibraltar out of Southampton for the last time on January 10th and was handed over to her new owners on Jan 13, 2014.

In 2005, Saga Cruises introduced the "Spirit of Adventure Cruises" brand. In March 2006, MV Spirit of Adventure (former Orange Melody) entered into service. In 2013, Saga sold the brand.

For summer 2003, Saga Holidays chartered  Minerva  (1989-built) which sailed as "Saga Pearl". Saga Rose was retired in 2009 after a final 37-night Mediterranean voyage. Subsequently, the ship was laid up in  Gibraltar  and scrapped  in China in 2010. In 2014 was acquired Saga Ruby (former NCL ship MS Vistafjord), which last voyage was in January 2014.

Until 2020, Saga Holidays operated two ships under charter - Saga Sapphire and Saga Pearl 2 . The former fleetmate Saga Ruby was built and launched under the name "MS Vistafjord" for NCL/Norwegian America Line. In 1983, the vessel was sold to Cunard, and in 1999 renamed "MS Caronia". In 2004, Cunard sold it to Saga. It was operated as "Saga Ruby" until 2014 when was sold to a Chinese company, renamed "Oasia", operated as a hotel ship until 2017, then scrapped at Alang India .

Earlier in 2009, Saga UK acquired Astoria (Saga Pearl 2). Followed a GBP 14 million drydock refurbishment of the 1981-built vessel. The upgrades included new Veranda Restaurant; new balcony cabins; new Library Lounge; a redesigned Spa, and renovations to both swimming pools. The ship has 126 twin-bed cabins, 25 twin or king-bed cabins, 42 double-bed cabins. Of all staterooms, 20 have balconies and 9 have French balconies. Saga Pearl 2 has 60 single cabins (almost 1/4 of all staterooms). Among Saga's signature trademarks are the shipboard Afternoon Tea service and ballroom dancing. Saga ships departure from UK ports ( Southampton and Dover) on cruises to the Canaries, Baltic, and the Mediterranean. Itineraries range between 7- and 24-days in length.

Saga Sapphire and Saga Pearl 2 were both withdrawn from service/left the fleet after two new ships ( Spirit of Discovery /2019 and Spirit of Adventure /2020) were delivered. In August 2019 was announced that Saga Sapphire will be acquired by ANEX Tours (Turkey's largest travel agency/tour operator), starting operations for ANEX in mid-2020. However, due to the global health crisis in 2020, the 39-year-old liner was officially sold to ANEX Tours in July 2020. Renamed to "Blue Sapphire", it started operations for ANEX in 2021, offering roundtrips from Antalya Turkey to Eastern Mediterranean and Black Sea ports.

  • In November 2019, after acquiring Thomas Cook Group's subsidiaries in Germany (Oger Tours, Bucher Reisen and Neckermann) and Russia (Intourist, 1929-founded USSR-Russia travel brand privatized in the 1990s by Vladimir Yevtushenkov), ANEX Tours became the world's second-largest tour operator - after TUI Group. The company's Chairman (Neset Kockar) commented that expects the annual passenger volume to increase to 8 million and the turnover to reach ~EUR 10 billion (~USD 11 B).
  • Thomas Cook Group plc (2007-founded / 2019- defunct ) was a British travel group formed by the merger of Thomas Cook AG (British-German, 2001-founded) and MyTravel Group plc (British, 1972-founded). Neset Kockar (ANEX Tours) was the second-largest shareholder in Thomas Cook Group plc - after Fosun International China.

In July 2022, SAGA UK marked the anniversaries of Spirit of Adventure (July 6th) and Spirit of Discovery (July 10th), announcing interesting facts about the boats and their guests. In three full years, Spirit of Discovery navigated ~145,000 NM/nautical miles, completed 48 voyages, visited 273 different destinations, and served 2825 shore excursions. In one year, Spirit of Adventure navigated ~80,000 NM, completed 23 voyages, visited 144 destinations, and served 1617 shore excursions. Both vessels served ~36,9M meals, ~5,7M eggs, ~9,2 tons of lobster, ~13,5 tons of Dover sole, ~190 tons of smoked salmon, ~668,000 bottles of wine. ~12,000 customers used the onboard spas for massages.

In January 2024, Saga Group announced that it is exploring the option of a "partnership arrangement" for its ocean cruise business (including the potential sale of a stake in the division or selling the ships Spirit of Adventure and Spirit of Discovery) to unlock capital. In the period August 1, 2023, through January 29, 2024, Saga Group reported significant revenue growth (10-15%) over the same period in 2022-23, as well as ~30# increase (year-on-year) in revenue from its OCEAN division.

In 2017, Saga UK ordered two new cruise ships with capacity under 1000 passengers, each vessel with a total of 540 cabins and suites. The shipbuilder is Meyer Werft ( Papenburg Germany ). Unlike all previous Saga ships, these two are fully-owned by the company.

The vessels were scheduled for deliveries in 2019 July ( Spirit of Discovery ) and 2020 August ( Spirit of Adventure ). This is a new series of polar-class expedition ships with ice-strengthened hulls. Each costs USD 346 million (GBP 280M / EUR 310M) and has a total of 540 staterooms (cabins and suites), of 100 are single cabins (designed for solo travelers, no single supplement required), which is approx 20% of all cabins. The other staterooms are in categories Standard Balcony, Deluxe Balcony, Mid-Ship Suite and larger suites.

Among the signature venues onboard are the Britannia Lounge (2-level Atrium bar lounge), The Verandah (specialty restaurant) and an outdoor (alfresco dining) restaurant. Each vessel has two swimming pools (indoor and outdoor).

Saga Cruises new ship (The Verandah restaurant)

At the end of March 2017 was announced the name selected for the first ship - "Spirit of Discovery" (scheduled delivery June 2019). The second vessel was ordered in September 2017 - "Spirit of Adventure" (scheduled delivery August 2020).

Saga Cruises new ship

In mid-September 2018 was announced that starting January 2020, Saga's new ships deals will be all-inclusive. Fares include unlimited (shipboard served) house spirits, beers, wines (by the glass) and soft drinks. Company's packages also include:

  • UK travel package (to/from departure port), Shuttle bus transfer (to the nearest downtown from the port)
  • Onboard gratuities, Porterage
  • Onboard Welcome cocktail party
  • All onboard meals, afternoon tea, live entertainment
  • Unlimited tea and coffee (selected ship venues)
  • 24-hour room service
  • premium service (2 staff members for 3 passengers)

In early-March 2019, Saga announced that the company's both newbuilds (the sisterships Adventure and Discovery) are all-inclusive. This means that Saga cruise fares are inclusive of specialty restaurant dining, drinks (wine, beer, house spirits, soft drinks), 24-hour room service, Wi-Fi, gratuities, transfer (chauffeur service to/from homeport for cruise passengers based within 250 ml / 402 km distance). Shore excursions remain optional and at additional cost. The cruise company offers complimentary shuttle bus services in all ports where the town/city is over 0,5 km from the ship.

In early-November 2019 was announced the shipbuilding order for Spirit of the Rhine (2021-inaugurated, 192-passenger riverboat). In early-February 2021 started the construction of a second newbuild riverboat - Spirit of the Danube (2022-inaugurated, sistership). Since 2024 is also chartered Spirit of the Douro (2017-built, owned by Mystic Invest via Douro Azul ).

In late-March 2022, Saga announced a 4-ship expansion project for its riverboat fleet, ordering 4x ships (Spirit of the Moselle, Spirit of the Main, Spirit of the Elbe, Spirit of the Rhone), with the first entering service in 2023 and the rest following one vessel per year.

Saga Holidays ocean- and river cruising experience

Saga Cruises offers both Ocean and River cruise travel vacations. All the company's vessels are chartered. The cruising experience is classic, elegant and comfortable. Passengers are able to choose from contemporary amenities such as modern spas, Internet cafes, alternative dining in intimate restaurants. Do not expect shopping centers, casino or lustrous shows - Saga passengers like the relaxed and good-mannered social life. Traditional English tea is served each afternoon; ballroom dancing is presented nightly.

Saga passengers are more adventurous than it might be imagined. They seek a high level of comfort and service while they are careful not to squander pensions on gambling (the reason why there are no casinos on Saga's ships). They also demand fine food, that is well-prepared, from varied menus. Some of the mainstream cruise lines may get away with fortnightly or weekly menu cycles. That wouldn't be welcomed by Saga Cruises customers who are free to stay onboard for back-to-back cruises.

When you are not out or it is one of those lazy days at sea onboard Saga ships, you will be surprised by the great number of onboard activities. You will have the opportunity to join painting or computer classes, keep fit with Pilates and yoga, enjoy swimming, attend a talk from guest speakers. Relax with new and old friends, or look for some quiet time in ships' cozy areas. Other diversions include the beauty salon and spa - go for a pampering treatment or a massage or try the gym - go for a refreshing yoga course. A well-stocked library with thousands of books is also provided. Another choice is using one of the computers and keep in touch with family and friends.

In the evening onboard Saga ships, while heading to the next destination before dining, enjoy an aperitif in onboard bars, or work up with pre-dinner dance classes. At formal nights (one for a week-long cruise, two for a 14-night cruise) enjoy the feeling of occasion. Later take your seat for a show, go dancing, watch a film or socialize with friends - you may even enjoy a nightcap accompanied with live music in the inviting lounges and bars.

On select cruise itineraries, you will be entertained by celebrities. But the best part of all is that with no children on board, kids' games arcades or clubs taking up space, everything aboard is designed for your pleasure.

No matter which Saga ship you choose (ocean or river), each mealtime is going to be an exciting dining experience. Good breakfast is essential when you have a day full of activities - plenty of choices await for you for the day ahead. Choose from a waiter-served meal, the buffet onboard Saga Ruby, or eat out on deck. Opt for full English breakfast brought to the cabin. There are plenty of things to tempt you at lunchtime: choose from the buffet or enjoy a cooked-to-order lunch in the main restaurant.

Afternoon Tea is a daily cruising tradition with tempting cakes, pastries, finger sandwiches. Dinner - the day's highlight - is always waiter-served, one-sitting, sometimes with six courses. A talented team led by the Executive Chef prepares the meals using the finest and freshest/locally sourced ingredients.

Delicious wines from well-stocked "cellars" are recommended from sommeliers who are also on hand. Main courses, including game, fish, meat, vegetarian dishes, are followed with desserts from a selection of souffles, tarts, pavlovas, petits fours. The best of all is that you will never feel rushed to end your meals or have to wait for guests, as flexible arrangements make sure you dine at any time between 7-9 pm.

Saga Cruises customers

The Saga cruise line targets 50-and-older customers and is kids-free. The company sells directly to the public, not counting on travel agents. Allowing traveling companions who are 40+ years old is beneficial to couples who want to cruise together with grown-up families and in-laws, and also to those who need assistance and personal care. Saga's customers are elderly and almost exclusively British, with occasional passengers from Australia, Canada, New Zealand, rarely Japan.

Saga UK provides free chauffeur service (door-to-door) for passengers who live within 75 mi (120 km) of cruise departure ports, and also shared chauffeur for up to 250 mi (400 km) homeport distances. Saga Cruises enjoys a high repeat booking rate (about 75%).

To attract first-timers, since 2016 Saga offers "Love it First Time". By this initiative, a full refund is guaranteed to anyone who doesn't enjoy the company's cruising vacation product. SAGA UK guarantees that if passengers find that the experience is not for them, they can leave the ship at the next available call port. The "Love it First Time" offer applies only to new bookings and first-time customers.

The tours showcase the best of the region and the communities that thrive in this beautiful but inhospitable environment. Departing Tilbury, the cruise takes in Isafjördur, Grundafjördur, Reykjavik (Iceland), Qaqortoq, Narsarsua and Nanortalik (Greenland) before calling at Scrabster (Scotland) on the way home. The cruise also   takes in Lisbon, Portimão (Portugal), Palma (Majorca), Civitavecchia, Livorno (Italy), Monaco, Cartagena (Spain) and Gibraltar before arriving back to Tilbury.  Prices start from £4,231 per person

There are plenty of options to escape the British winter and head to the warmth of the  Canary Islands , with their volcanoes, rain forests, mountains, cities and fishing ports. A highlight for the year will be Porto da Praia’s return to Saga’s schedule on the  Cape Verde and the Canary Islands  cruise.  Spirit of Adventure  departs from Portsmouth on November 13 for 21 nights taking in Funchal, Santa Cruz, San Sebastian, La Gomera, Porto da Praia, Porto Grande, Santa Cruz, Arrecife, and La Coruña, Spain. Tours to Funchal, Santa Cruz, Arrecife, Cádiz and La Coruña are included. Prices start from £4,650 per person. There are also a further six cruise options to the sub-tropical Canaries between February and Christmas 2023.

And of course, there are a range of  Mediterranean  cruises including three 15-night  Islands of the Western Mediterranean  itineraries departing on April 22 and July 6 on  Spirit of Adventure  with prices from £3,318 per person, and from August 20 on  Spirit of Discovery  with prices from £3,325 per person.  Highlights of Spain and the Balearics  departs on May 6, aboard  Spirit of Discovery  and on September 24, 2023 on  Spirit of Adventure  for 15 nights from £3,234 per person.  Lisbon and Spain’s Atlantic Coast  on  Spirit of Adventure  departs on May 14, 2023 for 12 nights with prices from £2,767 per person.

Saga’s Baltic cruises will be uncovering some wonderful ports including smaller destinations such as Kotka in Finland and Wismar on Germany’s coast with its historic UNESCO listed town centre, plus the ever-popular ports of Tallin, Stockholm and Copenhagen. As an example,  Baltic Capitals  is a 14-night cruise that departs on June 5, 2023 on  Spirit of Adventure  from Dover, with prices starting from £2,866 per person.

The Saga cruise team have also applied their extensive destination knowledge to develop a range of excursions, both included and optional, that will give guests a real behind-the-scenes insight to the places they are visiting.  Examples include: a  small boat trip from the Greenland cruise into the Qooroq Ice Fjord to see the light-blue icebergs that the area is famous for;   a 4×4 drive to Volunteer Point, home to 1200 King penguins and 500 gentoo and magellanic penguins on the South American cruise ;  a seaplane flight over Bergen on the Norway itinerary and a visit to Mount Etna on the Sicilian cruise.

Saga’s Ocean cruises are all-inclusive with a complimentary door-to-door chauffeur service, or Saga can arrange car parking near the port, domestic flights or standard class rail/coach travel.  There are no hidden costs on-board either. Saga Cruises come with all dining and house drinks including a selection of cocktails, draft beers and lagers, wines, spirits, mixers and soft drinks. New this year and in response to guest feedback, a selection of premium label spirits are also available at no additional cost. Also complimentary on board are the Wi-Fi, gratuities, fitness facilities, 24-hour room service, sightseeing tours in selected ports, entertainment (from lectures to recitals to West End shows), porterage of luggage, shuttle buses to nearest town centres and travel insurance with up to £5m coronavirus cover included.

Both  Spirit of Adventure  and  Spirit of Discovery  are small by today’s ship standards, but clever design and a limit to the number of guests (up to 987) give a real feeling of space and comfort, plus all cabins have their own balconies facing onto the ocean.

Although the ships are very distinctive from one another in décor and style, they both feature five restaurants, bars and a living room. Outdoors there is an observation deck, full wraparound promenade and terrace, pool, sports court and deck games. Entertainment and wellbeing facilities include The Playhouse (a 444-seat theatre with complete unobstructed views seating, home to Saga Cruise’s resident performance company), the signature Britannia Lounge with a dance floor and live entertainment, The Library with refreshments, craft and card rooms, The Spa with hydrotherapy pool, sauna, steam and treatment rooms, The Salon, a gym, shop and medical centre.

Everything you need to know about Saga’s boutique ocean cruises – what’s included?

Saga Cruises is a British-based cruise company specialising in luxury cruises for passengers over 50 – but how much is really included? Here’s what you can expect on a Saga cruise.

In association with:

Saga logo

Saga Cruises offers a premium, boutique cruising experience and is a well-known name in the travel sphere.

The Saga fleet boasts two ships, Spirit of Discovery and Spirit of Adventure, which were specifically built for the brand and feature a range of amenities and facilities to cater to the needs of their clientele.

However, those new to cruising might not realise quite how much is included when you sail with the British line.

We’ve taken a look at the facts to make sure you know what to expect from Saga cruises 2023 and beyond.

Saga Supper Club

Saga cruises: All-inclusive speciality dining

With many cruise lines, your fare covers dining in select restaurants but speciality restaurants require an extra fee – not so with Saga.

The main dining rooms and speciality eateries are all included in the price of Saga boutique cruises on both Spirit of Discovery and the Spirit of Adventure.

Saga’s skilled chefs shop, plan and prepare their own menus each day so fresh food can go from the market to holidaymakers’ plates in just a few hours.

Both Saga cruise ships have a main dining room serving British and international cuisine at breakfast, lunch and dinner as well as a more casual Grill restaurant. There’s also the option to dine al fresco at The Grill’s large outside space, the Verandah; barbecues are often held out here when the sun is shining. Yes, go on, another burger please.

Spirit of Discovery and the Spirit of Adventure also offer afternoon tea – after all, Saga is a British cruise line! Freshly-baked cakes, scones and sandwiches are served étagère-style at your table. All you need to decide is whether you’ll pair the repast with some fizz.

And, if you don’t fancy making the walk to one of the eateries, just treat yourself to room service! It’s available 24 hours and includes breakfast in bed plus a selection of drinks and snacks brought to you. That’s those late-night munchies sorted!

Vegetarians and vegans are well catered for on Saga cruise ships and lighter options are available too. If you have dietary requirements, just speak to your Cruise Consultants when booking or get in touch before your cruise to arrange this. In the words of Hotel General Manager Angelo Balbi: “We are committed to continuously evolving our menus to ensure a truly inclusive and unforgettable dining experience for all.”

Saga Amalfi restaurant diners

Spirit of Adventure dining

As for speciality restaurants, Spirit of Adventure – the newest of the two Saga cruise ships, launching in 2021 – is home to Nepalese restaurant Khukuri House [above, right] as well as Amalfi [above, left] which serves high-end Italian cuisine.

The two ships each have their own casual dining options, too. Spirit of Adventure houses a popular Supper Club offering cabaret-style evenings in an elegant steakhouse setting, all teamed with live entertainment and dancing.

Spirit of Discovery dining

Meanwhile, Spirit of Discovery features speciality restaurant East to West, where menus on Saga boutique cruises reflect the diversity and vibrancy of Eastern cuisine, from classic favourites to dishes with a contemporary twist, and also Coast to Coast which plates up fresh seafood cuisine.

The Club by Jools is the ship’s fun and vibrant dining option – it fuses a steakhouse with first-class entertainment, offering cocktails and dining with live music à la famous music lounges of the 1950s.

Saga Spirit_of_Adventure_ lounge

Saga cruises: All-inclusive drinks

Bottoms up! No worrying about the bill with that next cocktail – all drinks are included with Saga ocean cruises, comprising a range of Premium spirits along with house wines, cocktails and soft drinks.

Spirit of Adventure bars

Whether you want a quiet drink or a bevvy with a bit more of a vibe, Saga boutique cruises have you covered. The North Cape Bar is the main bar on the ship offering an extensive list of fine wines, craft beers and spirits.

Alternatively, go to Britannia Lounge for views, specialist talks from guest speakers, demonstrations and classes, dancing and live performances.

Or why not head to The Living Room during the day for a coffee or pre-dinner cocktail and a variety of snacks, including homemade cakes and fresh pastries? At night it’s a sociable bar offering occasional light entertainment. And remember, there’s The Supper Club too for late-night cabaret-style entertainment.

Spirit of Discovery bars

The main bar on Spirit of Discovery is The South Cape Bar serving up a full selection of wines, draught craft beers, and a curated collection of fine whiskies and gins.

There’s signature Britannia Lounge of course, just like on Spirit of Adventure and ditto The Living Room. For late-night entertainment and cocktails head to The Club by Jools – expect resident and guest musicians!

Saga Spirit_of_Discovery_ cabin

Saga cruises: Balcony cabins

No need to wonder whether you’ll be without a view on a Saga cruise 2023 – all cabins on both Spirit of Discovery and Spirit of Adventure boast a private balcony.

There’s a range of cabin grades, including over 100 dedicated single cabins, so you can be sure one suits your travel needs. They’re also at an average of 215 square feet, making them among some of the most generously-sized cabins on the high seas. Plenty of space in which to get ready when you’re donning your glad-rags, hey!

Adapted rooms are also available – they can be configured as a King size or twin bed and include your own private wheelchair-accessible balcony.

Want to go all out? Upgrade to a suite and enjoy separate living areas, additional luxury facilities and a butler service. Ah, now we’re talking.

Saga sun deck Spirit of Adventure

Saga cruises: Advantages of a boutique cruise

Even if you don’t get a butler though, know you’ll get excellent service throughout the ships – one of the standout features of Saga cruises.

The line has a high staff-to-guest ratio (one member of staff to every two guests!) to ensure personalised attention and a more intimate atmosphere. After all, these smaller ships carry no more than 987 guests on each cruise. Don’t be surprised if the staff soon learn your name and even how you like your steak cooked!

Another perk of travelling on Saga boutique cruises is the complimentary chauffeur service (up to 75 miles private and shared up to 250 miles each way on 2023 cruises and up to 300 miles on select 2023 cruises and all 2024 cruises). On your holiday departure day your driver will arrive in good time, load up your suitcases and drive you to the port. That’s right, Saga’s cruises all depart from the UK so you’ll never need to worry about the hassle of the airport (or liquid limitations!).

Saga will also arrange car parking for you if you prefer to drive yourself, or, if you want, an included domestic flight to London from an airport closer to your home – with a chauffeur to escort you to the port, of course.

Right, sign us up, and make mine an Old Fashioned!

Saga Travel’s 2023 river cruise schedule launched with a tranche of new and included benefits

Saga Travel’s 2023 river cruise schedule launched with a tranche of new and included benefits: SHP Spirit of the Rhine EXT 17641

New benefits introduced to mirror Saga’s ocean cruise experience including:

  • Both ‘Spirit’ river ships operating as all-inclusive from 2023
  • Up to 25 per cent off when booked early (discount included in the pricing below)
  • The introduction of back-to-back cruises with an extra 10 per cent off
  • Dedicated solo traveller cabins allocated on every cruise

As part of  Saga’s 2023 river cruise  itineraries released today for Saga’s new ships Spirit of the Rhine and Spirit of the Danube , the travel specialist has also announced that both ships will become all-inclusive from the 2023 season, so all meals and drinks will now be covered including in the intimate, speciality restaurants.

The change comes as part of a range of updates that will align the customer experience more closely to that of Saga’s ocean cruise proposition.

Other new benefits also include the option to book back-to-back cruises, which will be clearly marketed as such and guests selecting them will receive a further ten per cent off their booking. This is in addition to the introduction of a simpler pricing model that means early bookers are rewarded with discounts of up to 25 per cent off the full price. If, for any reason, the price should be reduced after a guest books, Saga will automatically give them the difference back as part of its price promise .

Each cruise will also guarantee a proportion of dedicated cabins for solo travellers, although travellers should book early to secure them as they are always very popular.

Other already excellent inclusions remain in place such as the complimentary door-to-door chauffeur service, travel insurance with up to £5m covid-cover, at least three sight-seeing excursions on all seven-night cruises and up to eight included on longer cruises and gratuities.

Nigel Blanks, CEO of Saga Cruises, said: “We know our guests want an exceptional experience and real value for money so the ‘Spirit’ cruises moving from 2023 to all-inclusive, along with back-to-back itineraries with 10% off and discounts starting from 25% off are all in response to their feedback. And these are in addition to the complimentary chauffeur service, travel insurance and a range of included excursions we already offer.

“We’ve got a lovely line-up of itineraries too, with plenty of new cruise options on-board the brand-new Spirit of the Danube and Spirit of the Rhine along with some firm favourites and our guests can travel with us safe in the knowledge that everyone on our ships must have both vaccines and at least one booster, and our covid safe protocols remain firmly in place.”

All of this is in addition to an exciting line-up of cruises with itineraries ranging from between seven and 16-nights across the two brand-new ‘Spirit’ ships, which only had their official naming ceremony last month.

New to the line-up for 2023 will be:

Spirit of the Rhine and Spirit of the Danube build on Saga’s boutique design philosophy of its ocean-going vessels,  Spirit of Adventure  and  Spirit of Discovery , and offer a luxury cruise experience for customers on Europe’s famous riverways.

With designs inspired by the nature and culture found along the iconic waterways, both ships have been built with guests central to their design. Each vessel has four passenger decks and 91 guest cabins, hosting up to 182 customers and up to 50 crew. Each ship also features the first-class Saga facilities that guests have come to expect, complete with an en-suite bathroom and walk-in shower. There are two different types of cabin available on both ships. All have a clean, sophisticated design with  Spirit of the Rhine  reminiscent of Saga’s larger ocean ships and  Spirit of the Danube  based on an Art Nouveau and Danube Delta theme, with elements such as migratory birds used throughout the ship.

Saga will also be introducing four new owned river ships between 2023 and 2026 (one per year), capitalising on the growing popularity of river cruising.

The full brochure of cruises can be found on Saga’s website .

A factsheet on the new river cruise ships can be found here at the Saga Newsroom .

Elizabeth Rhodes/Travel + Leisure

For the first time, we’re spotlighting new cruise ships on Travel + Leisure ’s It List, as these exceptional vessels become more and more like floating resorts — celebrity chefs, crystal chandeliers, and Rolex boutiques included.

Explora Journeys’ Explora I

Paul Brady/Travel + Leisure

It’s not every day a new cruise line arrives. The debut of the remarkable Explora I was a moment years in the making for Explora Journeys , the upstart luxury operator that aims to bring a European sensibility to the world of vacations at sea. So far, the project is a smashing success, thanks to the ship’s low-key vibe, standout food and beverage, and intriguing itineraries that visit in-demand ports in Northern Europe, the Mediterranean, and the Caribbean. My own August 2023 trip on Explora I , from Copenhagen to Hamburg, Germany, included fulfilling visits to places such as Oslo and the town of Stavanger, Norway, a gateway to adventurous hiking with a postcard-perfect Old Town. The ship itself was also a destination, with its abundance of outdoor space — including an alfresco fitness center — and pools at seemingly every turn. The 461 suites, all of them with balconies, are filled with luxurious touches such as Frette linens and robes, heated marble floors, and Dyson hair dryers. But Explora I truly shines when it comes to food: During the week I was aboard, it was impossible to find a bad meal — and I was often astonished at the quality of, in particular, the pasta served in the Emporium Marketplace and the sushi on offer at Sakura, two of the nine restaurants aboard. The most ambitious of them all is Anthology, a rotating-chef concept that has seen a residency from seafood whiz Mario Ulaissi, known for his Michelin three-starred restaurant on Italy's Adriatic coast, and that recently welcomed Emma Bengtsson, from Aquavit , in New York City. Much has been made of Explora I ’s Rolex boutique — the first on any cruise ship — but for my money, the other shops on board were more interesting: The company has tapped family-owned businesses around the world to create capsule collections of resort wear, handbags, fragrances, sunglasses, and beautiful gifts that can’t be found elsewhere. From $2,050 per person for a six-day sailing. Accessible ship. — Paul Brady

Oceania Cruises’ Vista

Nick Tortajada/Courtesy of Oceania Cruises

The new Oceania Vista is in a class of its own; no really, it’s the first in Oceania Cruises ’ new Allura class. Of its 11 bars and restaurants, three are entirely new to the Norwegian Cruise Line Holdings–owned brand — including a high-end cocktail spot called Founders’ Bar, serving 26 intricate drinks that use house-made syrups and top-shelf booze like Whistle Pig and parsley-infused Grey Goose. As Oceania levels up, the cruise line has produced a ship that feels more like a floating resort than the vessels that came before. There’s pickleball; a health-conscious restaurant, Aquamar, serving made-to-order salads and pressed juices; and a coffee shop that looks like one in walking distance of my home in L.A. (marble counters, gold accents, leather bar stools) and pulls an espresso shot of similar quality. Vista has more suites than others in the Oceania fleet, too: There are 14 Oceania Suites (up to 1,200 square feet); eight Vista Suites (up to 1,850 square feet); and three Owner’s Suites with Ralph Lauren Home decor and two massive terraces (2,400 square feet). But the most hotel-like touch? A celebrity chef–driven restaurant, Toscana, where Giada De Laurentiis — the ship’s godmother — supplied two recipes for the menu. As someone who watched a lot of Everyday Italian in the early aughts, I was particularly excited to try her signature, Capri-inspired lemon spaghetti, and lemon-cream sauce with grilled shrimp and capers didn’t disappoint. From $2,499 per person for a seven-night sailing. Accessible ship. — Maya Kachroo-Levine

Regent Seven Seas Cruises’ Seven Seas Grandeur

Courtesy of Regent Seven Seas Cruises

Regent Seven Seas Cruises’ sixth ship, the Seven Seas Grandeur , sailed its inaugural season in December, joining sibling ships Seven Seas Explorer and Seven Seas Splendor as the newest member of the luxury fleet. The cruise line is a favorite among T+L readers for its gorgeous ships and all-inclusive pricing that covers unlimited shore excursions, dining at specialty restaurants, and even round-trip airfare. Grandeur lives up to its name thanks to stunning, art-filled spaces designed by cruise ship interior experts Studio Dado: signature restaurant Compass Rose is enchanting with interiors inspired by a fairy-tale forest; the Observation Lounge sparkles with an undulating chandelier and swanky bar; and the $11,000-per-night Regent Suite has a private en suite spa and custom Treesse mini pool. As I boarded Grandeur for the ship’s inaugural sailing, I was mesmerized by the grand staircase and glittering chandelier. And with a maximum capacity of 744 guests, I found it easy to take time to myself in the myriad of quiet spots tucked throughout the ship, whether in the Serene Spa and Wellness area, in the Library, or on the Sports Deck overlooking the ocean. Seven restaurants include specialty steakhouse Prime 7, pan-Asian restaurant Pacific Rim, and breakfast and lunch buffet La Veranda, which refines the cruise buffet experience with daily specials like paella and sushi. Several bars and lounges, a pool and hot tubs, a casino, Broadway-style productions, and cooking classes at the Culinary Arts Kitchen make the ship a destination in itself, though guests will want to take advantage of those included excursions on Caribbean, Central American, North American, and European itineraries, ranging from seven to 16 nights, during the ship’s 2024 season. From $4,669 per person for a seven-night sailing. Accessible ship. — Elizabeth Rhodes

Silversea’s Silver Nova

Courtesy of Silversea Cruises

Carrying 728 passengers, Silver Nova is big for the luxury sector, but boasts a hugely important metric: a capacious passenger space ratio — that is, the number of guests relative to the size of the ship. Simply put, this ship offers more elbow room per passenger than almost any other cruise vessel. Silver Nova is wrapped in glass, with an asymmetrical layout; the funnel is positioned off-center, so is the pool, offering an expansive, uncluttered pool deck. Many features of the brand-new ship recall previous Silversea successes, my favorite of which is the S.A.L.T. (Sea And Land Taste) program, expanded for Silver Nova . S.A.L.T. perks include a gorgeous, sea-facing lab for hands-on culinary lessons (at no additional cost), plus a new concept, the Chef’s Table, where an 11-course menu is prepared for just 24 diners. All facets of the S.A.L.T. ecosystem, including ingredients, a bar, lectures, and shore excursions, are keyed to the region Nova is sailing. While food is a drawing card for Silver Nova , accommodations also received a revamp. Tied to the theme of bringing the outside in, there are brilliant new suites found in the aft starboard corner of the ship, with wraparound balconies revealing a 270-degree view.  This is where you can tuck me in when I win the lottery and head off on a world cruise. But until then, Silver Nova will summer in Alaska and spend northern hemisphere winters in Australia and New Zealand, places where top-deck views should prove ceaselessly rewarding. From $3,250 per person for a seven-night sailing. Accessible ship. — David Swanson

Saga cruises sails back into the black as passenger numbers soar

S aga cheered an ‘outstanding’ year for its cruise business – but still racked up a £129million loss as troubles at its insurance arm took their toll.

The company, which specialises in insurance and holidays for over-50s, sailed back into the black at its ocean cruise business where profits came in at £36million for 2023, up from the £700,000 loss the year before.

Its river cruise arm unveiled annual profits of £3million, from a £5million loss in 2022.

Saga’s travel business, which includes both the Saga Holidays and Titan brands, saw passenger numbers surge from 47,000 in 2022 to 57,800 last year.

‘Ocean Cruise had an outstanding year and, as a result, we far exceeded our initial earnings targets, while River Cruise and Travel both returned to profit for the first time since the pandemic,’ said chief executive Mike Hazell, the company’s former chief financial officer who took over from Euan Sutherland in November.

He added: ‘Forward bookings are strong, with all three businesses significantly ahead of the same point in the prior year.’

In 2023, tours around the fjords and Scandinavia were a particular sweet spot, while cruises to Greenland were increasingly popular.

But despite bumper demand for cruises and getaways, Saga still clocked up losses of £129million as its insurance arm continues to feel the sting of high inflation, driving up the price of payouts.

Motor insurers are being significantly affected by surging claims due to more expensive repair and labour costs and semiconductor shortages pushing up second-hand car prices.

In addition, they are banned from ‘price walking’ – giving cheaper premiums to new customers while making loyal customers pay more for renewals.

Saga was reportedly in talks to sell its underwriting business last year to Open, an Australian insurer, but failed to get a deal over the line.

But the company recently said that it was ‘exploring opportunities’ as it tries to drive down its debt, which currently stands at £637million.

Last year it tapped chairman Roger De Haan for £35million, adding to the pile of cash it owes him. It said it was looking at a partnership, with an outside firm taking over the running of its cruise operations.

Its two flagship vessels, Spirit of Adventure and Spirit of Discovery, run cruises across the British Isles, the Mediterranean, the Nordics and the Caribbean, with prices ranging from £1,300 to £15,000.

Analysts at Peel Hunt said ‘further strategic action is needed’ to get the company on a ‘firmer financial footing’.

  • Saga : Launches Full 2025 River Cruise Programme

Saga, the UK's leading specialist provider of services and products tailored for people over 50, has launched its full range of Saga River Cruises' 2025 itineraries, with up to 25 per cent off, offering early bookers the best deals and choice of cabins.

The new programme includes the expansion of Saga's river cruise collection, with the addition of a new ship, 'Spirit of the Moselle', which joins the fleet from July 2025 and which will sail along the Main and Rhine rivers in her first year, through to destinations such as Nuremberg, Frankfurt, Bamberg and the UNESCO-protected Rhine Gorge.

Carrying up to 172 guests, the ship is being built exclusively for Saga guests and comes complete with a wealth of facilities, including speciality dining, a splash pool and 92 comfortable cabins, 73 of which will have a French Balcony, plus a restaurant with panoramic views and a sun deck for the warm weather. Taking similar design cues from her two sister ships, with a focus on bright, spacious surroundings, guests can expect the same high-quality, all-inclusive experience and 'Spirit' service that they experience on other Saga cruises.

A typical Spirit of the Moselle itinerary is 'Gems of the Main River' , which offers seven nights on board and cruises the Main River stopping to experience the culture and history of the riverside towns and cities along the way. This includes medieval Nuremberg, a full day in UNESCO-listed Bamberg, an included walking tour of Bavarian Schweinfurt and a full day in Würzburg, with an excursion to visit the Residence Palace, followed by a guided walking tour of the historic centre before exploring the medieval market square of Wertheim and the picturesque cobblestone streets of Miltenberg's old town. Priced from £1,949 per person, with departure dates between July and October 2025.

Also new for 2025, Saga's river cruise guests can fly from their local airport closer to home with no extra supplement to pay on selected cruises, subject to availability. This is in addition to Saga's existing nationwide chauffeur service which picks guests up from home and takes them to the airport and back home again, for a hassle-free start and end to every cruise.

Other highlights from the 2025 programme include the new 'city explorer' itineraries, which have been designed to showcase city style breaks, albeit experienced on a river cruise.

An example of this kind of itinerary is the 'City Explorer: Budapest, Bratislava and Vienna' , which offers five nights on board Spirit of the Danube . The itinerary starts in Vienna, including the Ringstrasse and Opera House during an included tour, then sails overnight to Bratislava for a full day in the historic capital city. It then continues cruising towards Budapest for an overnight mooring offering plenty of time to uncover the city's landmark sights. Priced from £1,559 per person, with departure dates between April and October 2025.

A predicted favourite itinerary for 2025 on board Spirit of the Douro is the 'Douro Explorer' , offering seven nights on board. This cruises along the Douro through Portugal and the vineyard-clad landscapes and traditional towns of the UNESCO-listed Douro Valley, one of the oldest wine-producing regions of the world. Guests will sample regional delicacies and enjoy wine tastings along the way as well as exploring such attractions as the UNESCO-listed city of Salamanca and the medieval town of Figueira Castelo de Rodrigo, visiting the 18th-century Casa de Mateus Palace, plus port wine tasting

in Oporto. Priced from £1,521 per person, with 36 departure dates between March and July 2025.

Saga boutique river cruises offer an all-inclusive experience. There are no hidden costs on-board either with all dining and house drinks (including selected wines at lunch and dinner, house-branded spirits with mixers, draught lager, and all soft drinks), Wi-Fi, gratuities, sightseeing tours in selected ports, entertainment, luggage porterage and travel insurance also included, as well as the nationwide return shared chauffeur service from home to the airport.

Saga is committed to offering early bookers the best deals, so always launches its river cruises with up to 25 per cent off the full price, and its ocean cruises with up to 35 per cent off. Saga also offers a price promise , whereby if the price of the cruise ever drops, guests who have paid the higher price will get the value difference.

Guests can view and book these 2025 cruises at saga.co.uk/rivers-2025 or by calling 0808 273 6463.
