Five Things to Know About Holland America's Koningsdam Cruise Ship

Since 1971, Travel + Leisure editors have followed one mission: to inform, inspire, and guide travelers to have deeper, more meaningful experiences. T+L's editors have traveled to countries all over the world, having flown, sailed, road tripped, and taken the train countless miles. They've visited small towns and big cities, hidden gems and popular destinations, beaches and mountains, and everything in between. With a breadth of knowledge about destinations around the globe, air travel, cruises, hotels, food and drinks, outdoor adventure, and more, they are able to take their real-world experience and provide readers with tried-and-tested trip ideas, in-depth intel, and inspiration at every point of a journey.

Passengers: 2,650 Best for: Multigenerational travelers and passengers looking for a sophisticated experience without a sky-high price tag Sails: The Caribbean, the Mediterranean, and Northern Europe At a Glance: With a 2,650-passenger capacity, this is Holland America’s newest and largest ship—the first of the new Pinnacle class. It’s also the line’s most luxurious vessel, with an airy, modern design, world-class entertainment, and restaurants you’ll want to come back to again and again.

The Staterooms Are Made for Multigenerational Voyages

Well laid out with a contemporary design, cabins on the ship feel larger than they are. They range from 127-square foot solo cabins (new for the line) to the 1,290 square foot Pinnacle Suite, which features a living and dining room, sound system, and a plunge pool on the balcony. Also new are 32 family oceanview cabins, which can fit a party of five. Starting at 222 square feet, they feature a sofa bed and a pullout bunk bed, along with two bathrooms, so children can have one all to themselves.

  • Five Things to Know About Holland America's Rotterdam Cruise Ship

The Design Feels Fresh But Familiar

Holland America tapped Adam D. Tihany and architect Bjorn Storbraaten to design Koningsdam and create a template of sorts for Holland America ships of the future. The result is a lighter, more modern look with lots of glamorous touches, such the chic white lounge chaises that line the deck overlooking the Lido Pool, which look like something straight out of a boutique South Beach hotel. (Also new for the Lido Pool: a screen for outdoor movie nights.) Music-themed art covers the ship, from a statue of a cello to mod portraits of Mozart, a nod to the ship’s Music Walk (more on that later on). Even the rib-like arches that soar in the two-food dining room were inspired by the strings of a harp. Also in the dining room: streamlined furnishings in light fabrics, a dramatic grand staircase, and a stunning wine tower dramatically framed in bronze.

The Restaurants Impress

There are 13 restaurants on board, ensuring that passengers will never get bored with their options. On gala nights, you might find dishes by Holland America’s Culinary Council members—Rudi Sodamin, Mark Best, Jonnie Boer, David Burke, Elizabeth Falkner, and Jacques Torres—on the menu in the main dining room, which is also open for breakfast and lunch. Choose between two set seating times, or simply walk in and ask for a table whenever you wish. Lido Market feels less like a buffet restaurant than a modified food hall: With names like Breadboard (sandwiches and fresh-baked breads), Wild Harvest (salads), and Distant Lands (international options), each station feels self-contained and unique. Other restaurants included in the price of your voyage are the Grand Dutch Café, which serves Dutch pastries and dishes like herring and pannekoek (Dutch pancakes); New York Deli & Pizza, which is new to the line and overlooks the Lido Pool; and Dive-in, a hot dog and hamburger joint near the Lido pool. But it’s in the for-fee restaurants where the cuisine really shines. Brasserie Sel de Mer specializes in seafood, and the bouillabaisse and profiteroles are particularly excellent. Holland America favorites Pinnacle Grill steakhouse, Italian nook Canaletto, and pan-Asian Tamarind continue to be crowd pleasers. (Reservations go fast, so book before you board.) But perhaps the best new addition is dinner at the Culinary Arts Center’s farm-to-table restaurant with an open kitchen, where the chef talks through each simple seasonal dish he creates, then displays recipe cards for them at the end of the night for passengers to take home.

Make Time for Cooking and Wine-blending Classes

The Culinary Arts Center hosts demos and tastings that will soon be run by America’s Test Kitchen: Think pasta making, wine pairing, and mixology classes. Also on board is Blend, an intimate tasting room where passengers can sign up to sip a variety of vintages from Chateau Ste. Michelle, Washington State’s oldest winery, then blend them into their own creations ($129 per passenger). They can even create their own personalized label and have the bottle poured during their dinner.

Music Row Is a Must

Cruise-ship entertainment can often stray a little too far into the kitsch zone, but Koningsdam manages to elevate the genre, making it a nightly event everyone can look forward to. After dark, the buzziest spot on the ship is Music Walk on Deck 2, where Pinnacle Grill, Sel de Mer, the Culinary Arts Center, and the main dining room are all located, so passengers only have to walk a few feet after dinner to take in the B.B. King's All Stars in the Queen's Lounge, classical music at Lincoln Center Stage, and the Billboard Onboard piano lounge. Most of the shows play several times each evening and songs change nightly, so you never have to see the same show twice.

Ms koningsdam review, review of ms koningsdam.

The 2016-built MS Koningsdam cruise ship is the first Holland America Pinnacle-Class liner, with sisterships the fleetmates Nieuw Statendam (2018) and Nieuw Rotterdam (2021) and also Cunard's Queen Anne . These are HAL fleet's newest and largest boats.

The vessel (IMO number 9692557) is currently Netherlands- flagged (MMSI 244830547) and registered in Rotterdam .

History - construction and ownership

Holland America Line (HAL) is a Seattle -based cruise company owned by Carnival Corporation (shipowner). Between 1873-1989, HAL was a Dutch cargo and passenger shipping company operating regular Transatlantic crossings between Holland and the Americas. HAL was founded in 1873 as "Dutch-American Steamship Company" headquartered in Rotterdam Netherlands . In 1989, HAL was acquired by Carnival Corporation for around EUR 530 million. Among the company's assets are the Westmark hotel chain (Alaska-Yukon), Worldwide Shore Services (warehouses-logistics) and Half Moon Cay (Caribbean private island).

Holland America MS Koningsdam cruise ship

The 2700-passenger ship Koningsdam added a number of fleet-firsts, including two swimming pools and family oceanview cabins. Koningsdam's interiors reflect the work of designers Adam D. Tihany and Bjorn Storbraaten, who drew inspiration for the new ship from music. An example is the 3-deck, skylight-capped atrium featuring a stainless steel sculpture reminding a string quartet. Koningsdam represents the new Pinnacle Class for Holland America Line. The ship debuts several innovative concepts, new public spaces and venues while featuring popular amenities cruisers associate with the line. Guests enjoy HAL's first purpose-built single staterooms and staterooms for families, as well as fine dining in several alternative restaurants. The vessel's godmother Queen Maxima of The Netherlands performed the traditional dedication and naming at Port Rotterdam on May 20, 2016.

Decks and Cabins

MS Koningsdam staterooms (1331 total, in 35 grades) include 164 Suites, 748 Balcony, 142 Oceanviews (including 32x Family Oceanview and 12x Studios/single cabins), 277 Inside. Most cabins as sized ~180 m2 (17 m2). Most cabin balconies are sized 50 ft2 / 5 m2. Nearly 70% of the ship's passenger accommodations have private step-out balconies. Wheelchair-accessible cabins are 27. The largest accommodation is the Penthouse/Pinnacle Suite (970 ft2 / 90 m2, with terrace sized 320 ft2 / 30 m2 and fitted with an outdoor Jacuzzi).

The boat has 13 passenger decks , of which 8 are with cabins.

Club Orange is an exclusive (Suite-only) venue integrated into HAL's "Club Orange" program providing exclusive amenities to passengers booked in the Suite categories Neptune and Pinnacle. Bonus perks by the Club Orange program include:

  • priority services (check-in, disembarkation, tendering, dining reservations)
  • 24-hour concierge service (assistance, information, reservations)
  • exclusive dining venue (Club Orange Restaurant/deck 2) serving complimentary Pinnacle Grill breakfast and Dining Room dinner, plus exclusive dishes
  • dedicated Concierge Desk (Guest Services and Tours)
  • room service (a la carte breakfast menu with complimentary gourmet dishes - including smoked salmon, steak and eggs)
  • sparkling wine (embarkation day), Club Orange tote bag, premium bathrobes (cabin use, available for monogramming and purchasing)

Club Orange Restaurant occupies the area of the former "Culinary Arts Center". Culinary Arts Center was a premium dinner-only restaurant (cover charge $39 pp, unlimited wine included) via partnership with the “Food & Wine Magazine”. This open-kitchen/show-kitchen venue was used daily for professional cooking shows, culinary classes and workshops (cooking and cocktail) presented in demonstration kitchens. In the evenings, the venue transformed into “Dinner at the Culinary Arts Center”. This specialty dining concept ("America's Test Kitchen") provided a top-quality gourmet experience - the ship’s chefs prepared dishes in the demonstration kitchen while the guests enjoyed each course with wine pairing. At the entry, there were 9 interactive TV displays allowing guests to explore personal lives, special recipes, cooking secrets and tips from famous food and wine industry celebrities. By Holland America Line’s partnership with Koppert Cress (microgreen specialist), the Culinary Arts Center had a live garden to grow fresh ingredients. This enabled the guests to enjoy farm-to-table items from the dinner menu (veggie fare, 5 choices, dessert, cheese plate). The ingredients were displayed in a glass-enclosed garden area and harvested just before being served. Once sown, the seedlings grew for up to 2 weeks. The list of microgreens integrated in the recipes included garlic, mustard, licorice.

Shipboard dining options - Food and Drinks

Ship's 2-level main restaurant venue serves open-seating breakfast and lunch, as well as a blend of flexible and set-seating restaurant-style meals at dinner. Breakfast hours in the MDR vary but start as early as 7 am on port days and 8 am on sea days, wrapping up by 9:30 am. Breakfast fare includes bread, cereals, French toast, blueberry pancakes, corned beef hash, egg dishes and yogurt parfaits. Portions are on the smaller side, so better opt for a second pastry. Lunch in the MDR is typically limited to an hour per day (from noon to 1 pm on sea days; closed when the ship is in port for an entire day). If you see a line of guests waiting to be seated, do not be deterred as the line moves fast and the tables are plenty. Lunch fare includes sandwiches, soups, light salads, fish and heartier entrees.

Holland America is famous for its exceptional dining experiences on every voyage, but the fleet's newest ship ms Koningsdam boasts even more culinary options. The Dining Room is where passengers dine in a more formal setting. The two-story restaurant features an airy and sophisticated ambiance, with several new characteristics for a HAL ship. The bright design creates a unique venue while reflecting the overall design theme of the ship, inspired by the architecture of music.

This sunny, yellow room has expansive windows allowing for maximum daylight and sea views. In the evening its color turns to a darker shade of amber, thus setting the tone for an elegant evening dining atmosphere. Structural ribs inspired by the classical harp's strings connect the first floor to the second-floor ceiling creating the sense of a more curvilinear space. A grand staircase connects the two levels.

The centerpiece of Koningsdam's Dining Room is a sculptural champagne gold wine tower planned to appear fluid and folded. Flowing over the dining room are attractive chandeliers made from strings of hand-blown, tri-color glass bulbs.

On the menu are HAL's classic selections, signature dishes, regionally inspired cuisine, Culinary Council recipes from the world-renowned chefs who compose the group, including Master Chef & Council Chairman Rudi Sodamin and international chefs David Burke, Elizabeth Falkner, Jacques Torres, Jonnie Boer and Mark Best.

In addition to The Dining Room, Koningsdam guests enjoy fine dining in alternative restaurants including redesigned Lido Market (with themed food stations), the French seafood brasserie "Rudi's Sel de Mer", new farm-to-table concept dinner experience (in Culinary Arts Center, via partnership with Food & Wine magazine), Club Orange Restaurant (suite-exclusive dining experience), Canaletto (Italian restaurant), Tamarind (pan-Asian restaurant/seafood bar), Pinnacle Grill (steakhouse/seafood restaurant).

BLEND is a glass-enclosed winery room (capacity 10 seats) where are hosted daily wine blending sessions. These are reservations-only events (90 min sessions, $129 cover charge) with sommelier service. The BLEND venue is via partnership with the winemaker Chateau Ste Michelle Winery (Woodinville Washington). Wine-tasting events are seminar-like (led by a wine expert). Each session includes a sampling of 5 red wines (single-vineyard) later combined with different vintages into a personal blend. After the event, you can bottle and take your newly created wine and consume it at the ship’s restaurants or in the stateroom. At the BLEND room all guests are allowed to see the wines offered in the Pinnacle Grill and Sel de Mer, and also to choose their vintage from the impressive selection of premium wines.

The food plates are arranged from classic ingredients (caviar, fruits, root vegetables, peppers, etc). In January 2018, HAL released the coffee table book "Food Faces" - available for purchase on the ship. Signature dishes in the a la carte menu include Rudi's Seafood Tower, Fruits de Mer, Broiled Lobster Tail, Whole Dover Sole Meuniere, Clams au Beurre, Duck Cassoulet, Steak Tartare, Steak Frites, Souffle au Fromage, Salt Crust Baked Branzino. ms Koningsdam Wiki

The Koningsdam ship was named after HM Willem-Alexander of the Netherlands (Holland's current king). The ship’s name means "Koning" (king, in Dutch), and "dam" is traditional for the HAL ships suffix. The vessel (Fincantieri Marghera Yard number 6241) is powered by four MAK marine diesel engines (model 12V43C) with combined power output 50,4 MW. The propulsion system is based on two ABB Azipods (azimuth thrusters) with combined output 28 MW.

On February 26, 2015, was held the keel-laying / coin ceremony at the Fincantieri Marghera Shipyard (near Venice ). On March 31, 2016, the vessel was launched (floated out from drydock) and officially delivered to Holland America Line on April 1 (a week ahead of schedule).

On April 18 was officially announced the name of Koningsdam's Godmother - Queen Máxima of the Netherlands. Holland America has 11 of its ships christened by Dutch Royal Family members. In 2010 Máxima (then only Princess) named the Nieuw Amsterdam ship. Holland's previous Queen (Beatrix) named Eurodam in 2008.

On May 20, 2016, in Port Rotterdam (Holland) was held ship's naming ceremony. On May 23, 2016, HAL officially announced the name for its second Pinnacle-class vessel ((Koningsdam's sistership) - Nieuw Statendam  (launched in 2018).

The Koningsdam ship design is created by both "Tihany Design” (New York, USA) and "Yran & Storbraaten Architects AS” (Oslo, Norway). The vessel boasts 2-level theatre (named "World Stage"), 3-decks high Atrium, powered by Microsoft "Digital Workshop", numerous (including new for HAL) dining options, bars and lounges, expanded kids and teens clubs, the huge "Greenhouse Spa", the "Sea View" adults-only retreat.

Inaugural itineraries 2016

Following the repositioning from builder's shipyards (in Marghera/Venice to Civitavecchia-Rome) started Koningsdam's Inaugural cruise season in the Mediterranean Sea. It started with 7-day "Premiere Voyage" (roundtrip from Rome) followed by a series of 12-day "Premiere Sailing" itineraries (April-May 2016).

(Itinerary 2016 / April 8 to 15) Koningsdam's "Inaugural Cruise" was a 7-day roundtrip from Civitavecchia-Rome visiting Croatia (Dubrovnik), Greece (Corfu), Albania (Sarande), Greece (Katakolon-Olympia) and Italy (Naples).

In November 2016, Koningsdam started its Caribbean cruise itinerary program leaving from homeport Port Everglades (Fort Lauderdale) Florida . Caribbean itineraries offered roundtrips from the USA to ports in the Bahamas, Eastern, Western and Southern Caribbean.

Koningsam Review - Summary

Overall another enjoyable cruise with Holland America Line, but lessons were learned this time as detailed below. Some of the highlights: don't book an aft wrap , Club Orange is probably overrated , and the Neptune Lounge is a really great perk .

This was my third cruise overall and the second on Koningsdam. The first Koningdam cruise was to Norway in the Summer of 2018. This was my first time on K-Dam in the Carribbean. This is a beautiful ship as others have repeatedly stated. It's a nice size and while my favorite ship is Nieuw Amsterdam, I would gladly sail Koningsdam again.

Embarkation

Boarding at Port Everglades was a snap. We arrived around 11am and our names were checked off a paper list. We then went through security and entered the usual boarding queue. As Neptune Suite guests, we went to the front of the line. We had our key cards in less than 3 minutes and were directed to a separate waiting area. Boarding started at 11:30am and we were some of the first people on the ship.

We went immediately to our cabin 8195 which is an aft wrap Neptune Suite. I generally do not like the cabins on Koningsdam because I feel they are smaller. This cabin was no exception. Aside from the fact that it had a wrap balcony, there was nothing special about this cabin. It was like a BC or other vista suite category. The shower was tiny. My other time on Koningsdam we were in 6001 and this cabin felt similar.

As usual, our room stewards were amazing and always kept the cabin spotless and well stocked.

WARNING about this cabin : The aft location makes for some terrible shaking, pitching, and rocking in rough seas which we had. I barely slept a few nights. Also, there is substantial creaking in this cabin and vibration from the propulsion. On the plus side, the A/C kept the cabin freezing which I like. We did not smell cigarette smoke from the Lido deck but the sound of dragging chairs was noticeable and occasionally I could smell smoke from the engines while on the balcony. I would not book this cabin again and recommend you avoid it. It is also very far from the Neptune Lounge.

The bed was also firmer than I remember and there were no "deluxe bedding" or "premium chocolate turndown" as advertised (see photo). Just regular old sheets and the boring 1 inch chocolate squares.

Neptune Lounge

This is one of the better perks of being in a Neptune Suite. The concierge is great and can take care of pretty much anything on the ship from reservations to problems with your cabin. We were missing our Club Orange tote bags so I reported this to the concierge. They were immediately delivered to the room after the request. There is an honor bar, champagne on certain nights, and snacks. They also have a nice cappuccino/espresso machine that I used daily.

We didn't really get to attend sail away because it was delayed. I believe this was in part to accommodate passengers from NA that had the azipod issue. We didn't sail until a little after 6pm and by that time it was dark and trivia was starting. Before we left, Adventure of the Seas gave us a close shave and we had fun waving and shouting to the passengers on that ship. It was lots of fun.

Destinations

We sailed to Grand Turk, San Juan PR, St. Thomas, and Half Moon Cay. HMC was cancelled because of high winds and so the Captain just took us sailing around the Bahamian waters so that the casino could open. No free drinks that I was aware of. Kind of disappointing. Port fees were refunded.

Grand Turk was very fun. On the way in we parked next to Carnival Elation which should have been called Carnival Oxidation due to all the rust. Yuck. They need to take better care of their aging fleet. We went on a snorkeling excursion that was totally worth it and lots of fun.

San Juan was interesting. We walked to El Morro and visited the old town. There is an airport (TJIG) right by the port and I found it interesting that the departing ships attempted to stay north of the runway centerline to avoid landing aircraft. It was a very busy area.

St. Thomas was beautiful. We rented a jeep and drove around the island visiting several beaches. It was very relaxing. Driving on the left side of the road was fun. We saw a neat stingray in the waters behind the ship.

HMC didn't happen unfortunately. The winds were really howling and the sea was rough. The last two days were "sea days" spent eating, drinking, and doing trivia. Not what I wanted but these things happen I suppose.

Sunsets were beautiful from the aft balcony and I was reminded how serene and powerful the sea is. Some of the views on the water are incredible.

I thought the food was better this trip than any prior HAL cruise. Even the Lido food seemed improved overall. We ate at Pinnacle Grill and enjoyed the steak and clothes line bacon. I had my favorite dessert - baked alaska.

At the MDR we did the 8pm dining on Deck 3 and found that to be much better than the earlier dining. While I usually don't like to eat dinner so late, at that time you just walk right up to your table and the pace of the service is faster. Also, Deck 3 is cooler and quieter than Deck 2. The MDR food was consistently good.

No Yum Yum Man but they did have the cart out.

Club Orange

I am not sure what to make of this. I think HAL is still trying to figure it out as well. We ate at "Club Orange" for two dinners. Mostly when we wanted to have a quieter dinner. The food is the same as the MDR menu with one added item each night and the option of having macaroni and cheese. The portions are larger than MDR and they try to fancy it up. I also felt the single glass wine pour at CO was more significant. I really can't figure out why anyone would want to add this to their cruise for a  per day  charge. It might make sense to charge people $10 per meal here just for the break from the MDR, but otherwise I don't see the benefit. We didn't purchase it separately but it was included because we were in a Neptune Suite.

I did get to do the CO behind the scenes tour which was fun. It's a B-deck tour of the ship's stores and the prep areas. Our tour guide was the provision master and he was very informative. I learned a few interesting tidbits:

  • There are "VVIPs" on board who get almost whatever they want. I saw weird requests written down like "deliver a snickers bar cut into 3 pieces every afternoon" and other eccentric nonsense. There were about a dozen VVIP cabins written down. Sadly, ours was not one.
  • The crew demands a special kind of rice. They will not eat the rice we are used to. The crew rice is a "no go" item that must be kept in stock.
  • All of the bread except sliced bread is made from scratch and baked on board.
  • The ship spends about $15,000-$20,000 per month on medicine. When asked what kind of medicine, I was told "all kinds" and was told the medical center was very well stocked.
  • Despite the rumor, someone doesn't die onboard each cruise. We did visit the morgue (empty at the time) and I was informed that in about 13 years with HAL, the provision master has heard of only a few deaths on board.
  • The coffee is different on European cruises because they find that European passengers have different tastes.
  • With the exception of very long cruises, all food stores are taken at cruise origination. Nothing is delivered in the foreign ports. This is mainly due to quality control and cost.

By the way, the MDR salt and pepper shakers have a faint black and white ring at the top to denote salt or pepper. (see photo).

It wouldn't be a true review if I didn't complain a little. Here are my gripes:

  • It feels like staffing has been cut back a little bit. I only ever saw one room steward at a time although supposedly there are two. There was also a decrease in Lido staff. I noticed many self serve stations in the Lido which was not what I am used to.
  • The entertainment was terrible as usual. There was a dance show that was acceptable but the comedians were awful. HAL should not book comedians who bash the audience or spend 1/2 of their set talking about all of their accomplishments. Look, bud, if your Emmy nomination was worth anything, you wouldn't be performing on a cruise ship.
  • I think only true Neptune Suites should be marketed as such. Make sure you check out photos of your cabin before selecting it. There are websites for this.
  • The Lido pool was a mess with kids everywhere and wet floors. I suppose some of this cannot be avoided during the Christmas holiday.
  • The winter train set was broken. The train just sat there. There is an entire compliment of engineers on board. You'd think they could fix it.
  • The person doing trivia shouldn't make jokes at the expense of religious people. She regretted it immediately after saying it, but come on.
  • The spa really messed up their schedule. It would be nice if pre-purchased spa treatments showed up on your itinerary. Mine did not.
  • HAL is really going nuts with this "save the ocean" initiative. No more plastic straws, no more sugar packets, water in cans, and other silly things that just annoy passengers. There is even a video on your in-room TV where the CEO admits it is increasing costs for the company. As a stockholder, I do not appreciate this. I commend wanting to save the oceans, but the way to do it is to take better care of handling refuse and recycling. You can't tell me that a 1L glass water bottle is better for the environment than a plastic Evian bottle. Or that mining aluminum is better for the environment. Nonsense. And to use an appropriate pun, HAL has gone overboard with the feel good nonsense all while burning fuel oil like crazy.

I still really enjoy cruising HAL and I know I'll be back, but I think my next cruise will be on Celebrity just so I can make the comparison. We'll see.

I also saw this hanging on one of the other cabin doors and thought it was adorable.

Great review and photos.  We’ve been on the Kongingsdam in total of over 40 days off and on and I wouldn’t hesitate to book again.  I agree with the majority of what you have said.

We recently  spent 14 days on the Oosterdam in a Neptune and I also commented on my feelings about Club Orange.  However some really like it but others, like us, think it’s not only a money grab but kind of offensive to Neptune suite patrons and 4&5* Mariners.

Thanks for your review.

Thanks for the review.

Great review Sumo and photos. The salt and pepper shakers' differences are quite subtle, took me a minute to distinguish them. And the couple hanging that flag are far more wholesome and innocent than me. I noticed that the anchor should have been lower a bit to not cover a key part of the letter "E".

LOL thanks for pointing that out! Now I cannot unsee the "Nautical MILF"

Thank you for reviewing your cruise and sharing your photos.

To me, the biggest issue with this class ship is the lack of a real promenade deck.  I will give it a pass.

Not a promenade fan, so the Koningdam was perfect for us.

Thanks for your photos and review!

We will be on K'dam on the 2 January cuise, can i ask to the most expert one's h ow is common the cancellation of HMC? i've start to get into the idea that visit HMC in this period is almost impossible?

Thanks for the review. Going to Alaska on her next year.

I can't unsee this now as well.  😮

Let's hope that they don't know what a MILF is and she is not "advertising".

Thank you for your review, we will be on the Koningsdam soon and appreciate your insights.

Great report, thanks!

Great review and photos!

OP, I agree with your comments. I had a deck 7 aft wrap, and the motion, especially the "azipod shimmy" was annoying. The layout on deck 7 was different and much better/spacious than yours--I've never seen a Neptune aft wrap with the sofa, coffee table, and bed all squished together like that. (But I think deck 7 gets the prize for the tiniest shower.)  If there aren't pictures of your cabin, please post them on Halfacts so others can see how bad this one is.

Loved your comment on the comedian and his Emmy nomination. It's like Dancing with the Stars. If they really were "stars," would they have the time to spend weeks doing that show?

Thank you for posting.  Good review and photos.

Kind of you to post your review. Wow ... dodged a bullet ... had an upgrade offer for you cabin but decided against it. Having had a Neptune on our last cruise in Australia and NZ, that would have been a disappointment to us. I agree with the Neptune Lounge being a great perk. We board the Koningsdam on Jan 2 so very much appreciated your review. We have only been on the Maasdam and Noordam so this will be quite different for us. The great service, however, will remain the same. Sent from my iPad using Tapatalk

Just finished your review this am over coffee! Thank you so much for your honesty. Our favorite HAL ship is The Nieuw and I so love the promenade decks!

Unfortunately for us the itinerary we want out of our home of San Diego RT Hawaii/Mexico is The Koningsdam! My objection is the lack of a wonderful promenade. But itinerary is what we want and so will be on her in a NS midship.

Not a fan for OC. Don’t care for the tote I will stick with the Neptune lounge and PG with Sel de Mar! My favorite photo?

The beautiful STING RAY 👍 👍 👍 👍

We have been lucky to never have had HMC cancelled.   No one can predict the weather so fingers crossed you’ll get there.

BTW ... years ago on a Panama Canal cruise our first stop was HMC. It was in early February and we made it just fine. I was the Protestant chaplain on the ship that cruise and recall doing two renewal of vows ceremonies in the chapel on HMC. Sadly, my Protestant chaplain days are over as that was one of the cutbacks but that trip introduced us to HAL and we love the line.

Appreciated your review and photos as we sail on a 10-day Koningsdam cruise on Jan, 2nd. We had a discounted offer for Club Orange, but it just didn't see worth it. Couldn't find the value in it.

I agree you need to check out the Neptune Suites before booking them. After always having one on the same floor as the Neptune Lounge, we found ourselves (after having to book a NS guarantee in order to get a casino discount) with an aft one on the Oosterdam last Feb. and disliked it immensely. So far from everything and small.

We agree with that. We need a real promenade!!

Also the very poor entertainment!!

Good cruise, however the Lido buffet was a scrum, there was no self service and had to join long queues for food. I appreciate this was for hygiene reasons but could be inproved and tea and coffee in cabin would be nice.

The 8 best Hawaii cruises in 2024 and 2025

C ruising the Hawaiian Islands offers U.S. travelers an immersive South Pacific escape with all the comforts of home. In fact, the Aloha State is in many ways an ideal cruise destination. It has year-round sunny weather, four main islands featuring varied topographies — including sandy beaches, cascading waterfalls, volcanic mountains and vibrant green valleys — and a wide array of land- and water-based activities.

The main caveat? Hawaii cruise options are somewhat limited — just a fraction of what's available in the Caribbean — and many itineraries involve multiday crossings from the West Coast. Only one cruise line offers Hawaii itineraries throughout the year; most others visit during specific months or when repositioning ships in spring and fall.

For more cruise news, reviews and tips, sign up for TPG's cruise newsletter .

Looking for the Hawaiian Islands sailing that's right for you? Here's a look at the eight best Hawaii cruises for every type of traveler.

Norwegian Cruise Line's 7-night Inter-island Hawaii

For travelers who want more aloha time than the typical eight-hour port call allows, Norwegian Cruise Line has a solution. Its 2,186-passenger Pride of America lets vacationers sample four Hawaiian islands over seven days, with overnights in Maui and Kauai, plus port calls on both Hilo and Kona on the island of Hawaii. In total, this itinerary offers nearly 100 hours of shore time.

Pride of America sails round-trip from Honolulu every Saturday year-round. As a U.S.-flagged ship, it's the only large vessel permitted to sail this way. Not only do you skip the long Pacific crossing that most cruise ships do to reach Hawaii, but passports are not required for U.S. citizens, and you can tack on pre- or post-cruise stays on Oahu.

The overnights on Maui and Kauai also mean it's possible to try several of Hawaii's signature experiences that most port calls don't allow. Passengers can catch dusk or dawn from atop Maui's massive 10,023-foot dormant volcano with sunrise and sunset excursions to the Haleakala Crater. And with the ship in port all night on Kauai, guests who want to enjoy traditional Hawaiian cuisine, music and hula performances can book the Luau Kalamaku for a fun evening out.

Pride of America, which has been cruising Hawaii since 2005, doesn't have the onboard thrills (race track, virtual-reality gaming, waterslides) of Norwegian's newer ships , but that's okay because the islands, not the ship, are your main destination. Its American-themed decor celebrates U.S. cities in a vibrant, and at times, kitschy way, but a 2021 refurbishment left its cabins and public spaces feeling refreshed.

Many of Norwegian's specialty dining venues (which incur a surcharge) are on board, including Cagney's Steakhouse, Le Bistro (here, it's Jefferson's Bistro), Moderno Churrascaria and Teppanyaki.

Who should go: Anyone seeking a convenient way to island-hop — and see a lot of Hawaii — by making the most of the generous shore time with a combination of independent exploration and shore excursions. Most sailings attract couples ages 50 and older, although summer and holiday sailings have plenty of families on board.

UnCruise Adventures' 7-night Hawaiian Seascapes

Cruisers seeking a less traditional, more carefree Hawaii experience can have it from November to April aboard UnCruise Adventures ' 36-passenger Safari Explorer. The seven-night Hawaiian Seascapes itinerary, which begins either on Molokai or the island of Hawaii, is an unconventional one designed for those who enjoy going off the beaten path in an intimate and more authentic setting. U.S. passports aren't required to sail.

UnCruise visits four islands — Maui and Lanai plus Molokai and Hawaii — and focuses on not only their striking landscapes and underwater beauty but also the cultural traditions, cuisine and music of the Hawaiian people. On Molokai, where there's not a single traffic light and the lifestyle is slow-paced, passengers get a chance to "talk story" with locals and enjoy a pa'ina (feast) and evening jam session. Lanai activities range from snorkel, paddleboard and kayak excursions to off-road adventures exploring the privately owned island's dramatic sea cliffs, red rock formations and vast fields once filled with Dole pineapples.

Most UnCruise sailings are during Maui's humpback whale season, so sightings while cruising off the coast of Maui are possible. You might also catch glimpses of dolphins and sea turtles. A "Captain's Choice" day is a wild card determined by the weather, marine life in the area and other factors, while the final two days are spent exploring the Big Island of Hawaii — including a hike up Hualalai volcano and a skiff ride along the rugged coast.

Constructed in 1998, Safari Explorer was designed with adventure itineraries in mind (in summer the U.S.-flagged ship repositions to Alaska). Its size allows it to navigate areas larger ships can't reach, which in Hawaii means bays and coves ideal for snorkeling or watersports.

With such a small number of passengers aboard, guests get to know each other — and Safari Explorer's friendly and knowledgeable crew — quite well. Passengers come together over meals featuring locally sourced ingredients, and as all UnCruise fares include unlimited wines, spirits and microbrews, shipmates can raise a glass without worrying who's buying a round. It all lends itself to an exclusive yet utterly relaxed week of cruising.

Who should go: The ship's laid-back onboard vibe paired with its land- and water-based activities make the Hawaiian Seascapes itinerary ideal for active travelers seeking a nature-focused itinerary — although cruise fares (which start around $5,900 per person) are among the priciest for a Hawaii cruise.

Holland America's 17-night Circle Hawaii

Travelers who have more than two weeks to spare and who prefer to arrive in Hawaii via ship rather than an airplane can do so on Holland America 's 17-night Circle Hawaii itinerary. They'd better also love sea days because crossing the Pacific from San Diego or Vancouver to Honolulu and back requires 10 days.

That means passengers enjoy five or six days in Hawaii on Kauai, Oahu, Maui and the island of Hawaii. Some itineraries stay in select ports overnight. Cruises departing from San Diego also call on Ensenada, Mexico. With either departure port, passports will be required.

The itinerary is offered in 2024 and 2025 on the 2,650-passenger Koningsdam and 1,432-passenger Zaandam.

Travelers with more time on their hands can also visit Hawaii as part of longer Pacific island cruises with Holland America. Koningsdam will sail a 35-night Hawaii, Tahiti & Marquesas itinerary in 2025 that combines visits to four Hawaiian islands with calls on five islands in French Polynesia and Fanning Island, Kiribati (and 20 sea days).

Related: Holland America unveils epic cruise to Hawaii and Alaska for 2025

Zaandam will also sail 51- to 56-night Tales of the South Pacific itineraries that visit multiple islands in Hawaii and French Polynesia along with ports in the Cook Islands, American Samoa and Fiji.

Holland America is popular with cruisers ages 60 and older, many of them retired, who have time to enjoy longer itineraries on ships that offer good value with a focus on culinary and musical enjoyment. Two of Koningsdam's most popular venues are its live entertainment area with three venues — B.B. King's Blues Club (for Memphis-style rhythm and blues), Billboard Onboard (for chart-topping hits played by a live pianist) and Rolling Stone Rock Room (for a live band playing classic rock), and World Stage, a theater with a 270-degree screen used for both special BBC Earth in Concert and theatrical productions.

Onboard specialty dining options (at an added cost) include Pinnacle Grill for steaks and seafood, Tamarind for Pan-Asian cuisine and Rudi's Sel de Mer for French Brasserie specialties and seafood.

Who should go: Mature travelers who prefer not to fly and who enjoy a more traditional cruise experience. They should also love sea days as much (or even more so) than port exploration.

Princess Cruises' 15- or 16-night Hawaiian Islands

Princess Cruises is also a good option for longer sailings. The cruise line offers numerous round-trip itineraries to Hawaii from Los Angeles, San Francisco and San Diego in the fall and winter.

The majority of sailings are aboard the 3,080-passenger Crown Princess and Ruby Princess from San Francisco, and the 2,600-passenger Grand Princess and 3,080-passenger Emerald Princess from Los Angeles.

Ships are in port for nine to 11 hours in Hawaii (Hilo), Kauai and Maui and for 16 hours in Oahu. Itineraries include a stop in Ensenada, Mexico (so passports are required), plus nine or 10 sea days.

The ships feature many of Princess' popular dining venues, including Alfredo's Pizzeria (a sit-down venue serving personal-size pizzas), Crown Grill for steaks and Sabatini's Italian Trattoria. There's plenty of outdoor space for soaking up the sun — including an adults-only sun deck — and a dazzling Piazza for enjoying cocktails, gelato and pop-up street performers.

Fans of Princess' Movies Under the Stars poolside screenings (with free popcorn) and Discovery at SEA enrichment programming will have ample time to enjoy these perks on a Hawaii sailing.

Who should go: These sailings will appeal to couples or groups of friends who prefer to have a wide choice of sailing dates, can take the time to enjoy a leisurely Pacific crossing and appreciate Princess' focus on quality cuisine and a sun deck designed for relaxation rather than thrills.

Celebrity's 9- to 12-night Hawaii Cruise

Travelers seeking modern interior decor on a ship designed with couples in mind can visit Hawaii aboard Celebrity Cruises ' 2,852-passenger Celebrity Solstice or 2,918-passenger Celebrity Edge on itineraries ranging from nine to 13 nights — but only if the timing is right. That's because the line offers only two sailings per ship each year (in spring and fall) as the ships reposition between Alaska and destinations in the Pacific. The itineraries are one-way (Vancouver to Honolulu or vice versa) with passports required.

These cruises call on three ports on two islands: Honolulu (Oahu) and Hilo and Kona (Hawaii), with one or two overnights in port and 10 hours ashore on one-day visits. All include five days in a row at sea. Since the itineraries either begin or end in Honolulu, there's also a chance for some pre- or post-cruise exploration.

Sea days offer opportunities to enjoy the chic, grown-up ambience and amenities aboard these ships. Each vessel offers multiple complimentary and extra-fee specialty restaurants. Celebrity Solstice features Tuscan Grille for Italian specialties and steak and Murano for modern French cuisine, while Celebrity Edge offers the whimsical Le Petit Chef and the international Eden Restaurant.

Celebrity's signature Martini Bar and many other onboard watering holes keep the grown-up vibe going day and night. Choose cruise fares that include alcohol and Wi-Fi, or pay a lower rate and pay for your drinks as you go.

Who should go: The slightly shorter one-way sailings and the ships' contemporary ambience make these itineraries ideal for couples and groups of friends seeking a relaxing escape — especially Gen Xers in their 40s and 50s, who are Celebrity's target market.

Carnival's 14- or 15-night Hawaii from Los Angeles

If fun is your cruise mantra, the "Fun Ship" brand Carnival Cruise Line offers a handful of round-trip sailings to Hawaii from Los Angeles (Long Beach) aboard the 2,984-passenger Carnival Radiance. Like other roundtrips from the West Coast, these itineraries spend just five days in Hawaii, offering eight to 14 hours of shore time in ports on four islands: Maui, Kauai, Oahu and Hawaii. Along with enjoying eight sea days, guests will also call on Ensenada, Mexico, so passports are required.

Carnival Radiance first sailed under that name in 2021, but it's not a new ship. Before an epic makeover, it sailed for the cruise line as Carnival Victory. Ship features include many of Carnival's signature complimentary and extra-fee dining venues, including Guy's Burger Joint and Pig & Anchor Bar-B-Que Smokehouse, BlueIguana Cantina, Fahrenheit 555 Steakhouse and Bonsai Sushi Express.

Additional guest favorite destinations on board include the RedFrog Pub, Alchemy Bar and WaterWorks aquapark. Expect high-voltage theater shows from Playlist Productions at night and poolside interactive contests by day.

Who should go: Socially inclined cruisers who love Carnival's emphasis on onboard fun and can appreciate a colorful ship with a lively ambience and lots of day and evening activities.

Royal Caribbean's 9- to 13-night Hawaii Cruises

A megaship cruise experience to Hawaii is available, too — with pricing that's quite affordable. Royal Caribbean cruises there on two vessels in one of its newer classes of ships: the 4,180-passenger Quantum of the Seas and Ovation of the Seas.

All are one-way cruises just before or after the Alaska cruise season (so late April or early October) between Oahu and Vancouver (or vice versa). The ships call on two Hawaiian islands and spend four or five days in a row at sea. Passports are required since these itineraries begin or end in Vancouver.

Ovation of the Seas and Quantum of the Seas feature a mix of thrills for all ages. These include RipCord by iFly simulated sky diving, FlowRider simulated surfing, bumper car racing in the SeaPlex indoor activity complex and the North Star sightseeing capsule, which ascends 300 feet above the top deck for 360-degree views.

Both ships also offer 14 dining venues, including the innovative Wonderland, Jamie's Italian by Jamie Oliver and kid-favorite Dog House, as well as bar options that include Schooner Bar for by-request piano tunes, Boleros for mojitos and merengue and Bionic Bar for drinks poured by robotic bartenders. Entertainment includes live cover bands in the Music Hall and multimedia music and dance performances in Two70.

Who should go: Cruisers who love a big ship with a wide array of dining choices, all kinds of evening entertainment and plenty of exciting activities to pass the time on sea days. Quantum-class ships are great for families, but the sail dates might not work for those with school-age kids.

Viking's 16-night Hawaiian Islands Sojourn

For a guaranteed adults-only sailing in a relaxed, boutique-style setting, upscale cruise line Viking also offers round-trip Hawaii cruises from Los Angeles in late 2024 and early 2025 on its 930-passenger Viking Neptune.

What sets Viking apart from most of the other lines offering Hawaii cruises is that it includes a free shore excursion in every port. These include a highlights tour of Honolulu and Pearl Harbor on Oahu and a visit to a scenic waterfall and the Kilohana sugar plantation on Kauai. Additional excursions can be booked at an extra charge.

The 16-night Hawaiian Islands Sojourn sailings visit four islands — Hawaii (Hilo), Oahu, Kauai and Maui — and like other round-trip sailings from the West Coast include 10 sea days and a call on Ensenada, Mexico, so passports are required.

Viking Neptune will also do 32-night Grand Hawaii and Polynesia sailings round-trip from Los Angeles in late 2024 and early 2025 that visit four islands in Hawaii and four in French Polynesia.

The ship, which debuted in 2022, features sleek Scandinavian-inspired decor, a soothing spa with a complimentary thermal area, an aft infinity pool and hot tub, a panoramic Explorer's Lounge and five onboard restaurants. Specialty restaurant Manfredi's serves an extensive menu of Italian specialties, while The Chef's Table offers rotating five-course themed menus, including Asian, French and California-inspired.

In addition to the free shore excursions, pricing includes complimentary wine or beer with lunch and dinner, specialty dining at no extra charge, crew gratuities and transfers.

Who should go: Couples who prefer the quieter ambience of a ship that doesn't allow anyone under 18 onboard, doesn't have a casino and offers presentations by regional experts that enhance immersion into local culture. Viking cruisers are generally over age 55.
