The 13 Best Oahu Beaches

1. hale’iwa beach park.

13 Best Beaches in Oahu

Hale’iwa is a favorite among both tourists and locals for its laid-back vibe, incredible views, and green sea turtles. Part of an area renowned for surfing, its calmer waters provide better conditions for beginners and swimmers than most of the nearby beaches. It’s also easy to access off of Kamehameha Highway.

2. Ko Olina Beach Park

The Ultimate Ko Olina Guide (Where to Eat, Stay, and Play)

Ko Olina , the planned vacation and resort community in Oahu’s southwest corner, boasts four beautiful lagoons that provide an idyllic beach setting. With protected, calm waters, they’re great places for kids to swim. If you are planning a trip to this area, I have a complete guide to Ko Olina , including where to stay, eat, and play.

3. Kaaawa Beach

13 Best Beaches in Oahu

Kaaawa Beach , set below sheer cliffs on Oahu’s eastern shore is one of the most picturesque beaches on the island. The beach is stunning, but the strip of sand is narrow and the water is often rough or cloudy. Because of this, it is not ideal for swimming or sunbathing. People most often use the beach for photography, fishing, camping, and picnicking.

4. Shark’s Cove

13 Best Beaches in Oahu

For diving enthusiasts, Shark’s Cove is the place to be. Part of Pupukea Beach Park, this small, rocky bay is teeming with sea life that hides in the smooth boulders and coral heads that line its bottom. It’s been called one of the top shore dives in the world, but those who prefer to stay above the water can visit its tide pools.

5. Kailua Beach Park

13 Best Beaches in Oahu

This gem on Oahu’s east coast is a 30-minute car ride from Honolulu and worth visiting. Kailua Beach Park is a perfect beach for families. At about 2 miles long, it’s one of the largest and nicest beach parks on this side of the island, offering white sand beaches, excellent paddling conditions, lots of shade, and places for kids to swim. Parking is abundant and free.

6. Waikiki Beach

13 Best Beaches in Oahu

Perhaps the best-known beach in Hawaii, Waikiki Beach is a must when on Oahu. It’s home to several hotels and resorts and boasts great views of Diamond Head Peak. There’s so much to do in this area in addition to the beach itself, too. For a culinary guide, check out my list of the best restaurants in Waikiki .

7. Sunset Beach

beaches to visit in oahu hawaii

Located among the North Shore beaches in one of the world’s top surf spots, Sunset Beach is a great spot to catch premier surfers in action during the winter months. In the summer, with flat water, it’s a great haven for snorkeling, not to mention watching the sunsets it’s named for. If you’re looking for more to do on Hawaii’s North Shore, read my post on the best things to do in the area.

8. Kuilima Cove (Turtle Beach)

13 Best Beaches in Oahu

Kuilima Cove — a small, shallow bay on Oahu’s North Shore — is sheltered and tranquil, making it one of the island’s best places for beginner snorkelers. Even with its shallow depths, it’s easy to spot abundant marine wildlife here. The cove sits next to Turtle Bay Resort, one of the best hotels in Oahu for families , but because it’s a lesser-known beach, it’s not usually crowded.

9. Makaha Beach

13 Best Beaches in Oahu

Makaha Beach , a pioneer in big wave surfing, holds the distinction as the best place for surfing on Oahu’s west coast, with waves reaching up to 25 feet in the winter. In the summer, when the water is calm, it’s a popular dive site. Beach amenities include showers, restrooms, parking, and a lifeguard.

10. Waimanalo Bay Beach Park

13 Best Beaches in Oahu

The longest stretch of beach on Oahu’s eastern side, or windward coast, Waimanalo Bay Beach State Park is a favorite among residents. It’s located on a 5-mile white sand beach on Waimanalo Bay, which boasts gorgeous panoramic vistas. It’s bordered by a distinctive Ironwood pine forest that sits between the beach and parking lot.

11. Lanikai Beach

13 Best Beaches in Oahu

With a name translating to “Heavenly Ocean,” Lanikai Beach is a sight you won’t want to miss. Many consider it Oahu’s most beautiful beach and one of the best in the world, with clear, aqua-blue water and pristine white sand. Sometimes called a hidden beach, there is no designated parking lot, but you can find residential parking nearby.

12. Waimea Bay Beach

13 Best Beaches in Oahu

A great beach for all sorts of water-based recreation (depending on the time of year), Waimea Bay Beach Park , located on the north side of Oahu, is the perfect place to spend a sunny afternoon. Big waves in winter can be intense, touching 30 feet. But in the summer, the waters are calmer, allowing for swimming and snorkeling.

13. Hanauma Bay

Things to Do in Oahu

Once a volcanic crater, Hanauma Bay is now a protected marine life conservation area. It’s a top snorkeling spot on the island thanks to its scores of tropical fish and coral reefs. This snorkeling tour  includes round-trip transportation from Waikiki hotels and can help you avoid the hassle of parking and renting equipment.

What to Know About Visiting Oahu Beaches

There is an abundance of sandy beaches on Oahu, including some of the most iconic beaches in the world. Most of the beaches on this list will satisfy your criteria for a sandy beach on Oahu to enjoy.

Which Side of Oahu is Windier?

The windward side of Oahu is its eastern shore, where wind comes in to blow across the island. This is on the opposite side of Oahu from popular beaches like Waikiki and Ko’Olina , which are considered part of the leeward side of the island.

Tips for Being a Responsible Beachgoer

To protect the environment and Hawaii’s wildlife, it’s extremely important to leave no trace, which means making sure to dispose of all your litter and food waste. Wearing reef-safe sunscreen is also essential in Hawaii to avoid endangering its marine habitats.

12 Best Beaches on Oʻahu, Hawaiʻi

Annabelle Le Jeune is a Hawaiʻi-based freelance travel writer. Her work has appeared in publications, including Rewire News Group, Clean Plates, and others.

beaches to visit in oahu hawaii

Oʻahu is one of the eight main Hawaiian islands and is home to the state’s capital, Honolulu. The island is nicknamed “The Gathering Place,” appropriate for its visitor and local-friendly districts. Oʻahu is home to approximately 70 percent of Hawaiʻi’s population, and with a melting pot of cultures, there’s something for everyone to enjoy, especially the beaches.

It can take as little as four hours to drive around all of Oʻahu . With the right planning, visiting a couple of beaches on each of the island’s four coastal regions is worthwhile. From north to south and east to west, each offers truly unique beach experiences.

Before heading out to these Oʻahu gems, be sure to get acquainted with local marine life and learn how to protect the livelihood of the ocean ecosystems. Once you know the best ocean safety practices, you can ensure a good time for everyone.

Ala Moana Beach Park, Honolulu

This half-mile stretch of beach offers more than just a refreshing dip in the water. The beach park has sandy volleyball courts, a 2.6-mile running course on a sidewalk that parallels the beach, and a harbor where you can book boat and sea adventure tours. You'll also find grassy pockets and flat sandy areas for barbecuing and other fun beach activities that the whole family can enjoy. The lagoon between the shore and the reef prevents any rough surf from coming in, so waters are almost always calm for casual or even beach “lap” swimming. For those who enjoy surfing, there are plenty of surf breaks accessible just past the reef. The park has bathroom facilities, lifeguards, and even an L&L Hawaiian Barbecue restaurant.

Diamond Head Beach Park, Honolulu

Daniel Ramirez / Flickr

Set on the foothills of Lēʻahi (Diamond Head), an age-old volcanic crater and Oʻahu’s most renowned landmark, is Diamond Head Beach Park. While it's a favorite local spot for surfing in the crystal blue waters and reef formations, the park is also great for sightseeing. When you arrive, stop at the lookout atop the cliff and take in the views. If you're visiting from December to May, bring a pair of binoculars: you may spot whales breaching.

Access to the beach follows a paved path down, so keep your load light. The beach is rocky and spread with coral reefs along the shore, so it’s not the best for swimming, but it is nice for taking down a beach towel to bask in the sun or walk on the sand.

ʻEhukai Beach Park, Haleʻiwa

Set on Oʻahu’s North Shore, this beach break is home to one of the world’s best surf breaks: Banzai Pipeline. Every winter, surfers from all around the world come to surf and compete. The large, sloping sand area makes it great for staggering crowds to post up and watch the surfers carve their magic in the water.

While this beach is great for walking the vast stretch of sand, it’s not the most inviting to swim in. When the water and current are calm, typically during the summer season, there are shallow pockets along the shore where you can go for a refreshing dip. The parking lot is small and the one-way highways can get backed up, so try to get an early head start if you plan to go out.

Hanauma Bay, Honolulu

Formed in a volcanic cone, the beach at Hanauma Bay is home to one of Oʻahu’s most diverse and pristine marine ecosystems. First-time visitors are welcomed at the marine education center, where they will watch a nine-minute video to learn about the bay's marine life and preservation efforts, as well as safety rules for the park. Historically known for fishing and recreation, the reef and bay boast a variety of aquatic creatures such as Hawaiian green sea turtles, eels, and fish like the Humuhumunukunukuapuaa (the Hawaiʻi state fish). In order to protect this ecosystem that has suffered from overtourism, there is a new reservation system to visit the park.

Kalama Beach, Kailua

Kalama Beach is a 4-mile stretch along the grand Kailua Bay, nestled by views of clear waters and lush tropical greenery. Of all Oʻahu beaches, this might be the best for enjoying long walks. It’s situated in a mellow part of the bay, where you can set up some chairs and not worry about crowds. With picnic tables, showers, and bathrooms, Kalama Beach is a great family-friendly destination. Swimming is popular, but floaties are recommended. There are no lifeguards, so do be sure to check the water conditions before dipping in and beware of drifting too far from shore.

Keawaula Beach, Wai’anae

Also known as Yokohama Beach, Keawaula is a jaw-dropper. Set between open turquoise waters and a breathtaking Wai’anae Range backdrop, the beach is located on Oʻahu’s west shore. On this side of the island, the weather remains hot and dry almost year-round, and the shore break and currents can be very strong and unpredictable. Check the conditions before jumping into the water, and plan to stop at Tamura Super Market on your way in, as there's not much here in the way of food or supplies. The beach park also hosts the trailhead to Kāʻena Point , a 2.7-mile hike (one way) that leads to the westernmost point of the island.

Kualoa Regional Park, Kāneʻohe

If the surrounding view at this regional beach park looks familiar, it might be because you caught a glimpse of it in several blockbusters like "Jurassic Park," "Pirates of the Caribbean," "Lost," and "Jumanji." Centered around the almost otherworldly backdrop of the Koʻolau Range in Kāneʻohe, the beach park also opens up to a striking view of Mokoliʻi Island, located less than half a mile away from shore. You can kayak to the tiny isle offshore and even hike to the top, though it is steep and can be muddy after rainfall. If you're up for it, you can get a permit online to camp and behold the serene beauty of the bay overnight.

Lanikai Beach, Kailua

Lanikai, which translates to "heavenly ocean," is an apt descriptor for this stretch of shoreline. Situated in the quaint town of Kailua on Oʻahu’s east side, it's one of the best places on the island for watching the sunrise. And with its sweeping views of the two Mokulua Islands, located less than a mile away from shore, Lanikai Beach offers a lovely setting for long walks and swimming. You can rent kayaks and journey through reefs thriving with marine life and paddle toward the Mokulua Islands. Both are protected bird sanctuaries and the public is only allowed to park kayaks on the beach of the larger island, Mokulua Nui. There are no lifeguards out there, so check the winds and currents before paddling out.

Sunset Beach Park, Pūpūkea

Wally Gobetz / Flickr

Sunset Beach Park, originally Paumalū, is another beloved spot for advanced surfing on the North Shore. Its spacious sand area is inviting for those hoping to watch the epic surf. While waters can be calm and great for swimming during the summertime, it is known for a strong current, so it’s best advised to check on conditions before taking a plunge. And, as its name implies, this is one of the best beaches to catch a fluorescent sunset. Take a serene walk along the sand as the sun drops and behold the sky projecting swooping colors of pinks and purples.

Waikīkī Beach, Honolulu

Located in Honolulu's Waikīkī neighborhood, the former home of Hawaiian royalty, Waikīkī Beach is famous the world over. With sparkling emerald waters and the landmark Lēʻahi (Diamond Head) jutting up in the distance, it's well-suited for the whole family. Here, you can take surf lessons, swim in sand-ridden waters, jump on a day or sunset cruise, or even just sunbathe (umbrellas and lounge chairs are available for rent). Plus, Waikīkī Beach runs along Kālakaua Avenue, Honolulu’s main strip of hotels, restaurants, and shops. After grabbing a bite to eat or drink, or after dropping your bags off at your hotel , you can head straight to the water in just a few steps. While the winter season in Hawaiʻi can be rainy or overcast, Waikīkī Beach is especially known for its sunny coverage and calm waters year-round.

Waimānalo Bay Beach Park, Waimānalo

The beaches that stretch across Waimānalo Bay are nothing less than picturesque. From Waimānalo Bay Beach Park, you can enjoy breathtaking views of the Koʻolau Range, whose jagged peaks offer a dramatic juxtaposition against the park's long stretches of powdery sand and electric blue waters. With facilities like bathrooms, showers, and picnic tables, this is a great spot to visit. The water’s currents and undertows can be unpredictable, so look out for any signs or posts the lifeguards may put up. Because this beach is often breezy, we recommend securing your beach gear when winds are high so it doesn’t fly away.

Waimea Bay Beach Park, Haleʻiwa

The iconic v is the epitome of all things beautiful on Oʻahu’s North Shore. With its large sandy area, blue-green waters, and surrounding mountains, this spot is a must-visit. With waves that frequently reach up to 30 feet, the bay has become the host site for the annual winter “Eddie Would Go” surf competition . In the summertime, though, you’d almost never know the energy this bay can produce. Calm warm waters are so inviting for floating, swimming, and snorkeling. There’s also a 25-foot high rock that locals like to jump off of. If you’re unfamiliar with the conditions of the beach, it’s best to just sit back and watch.

14 Top-Rated Beaches on Oahu, HI

Written by Meagan Drillinger and Freddy Sherman Updated May 3, 2023 We may earn a commission from affiliate links ( )

Author Meagan Drillinger visited the beaches of Oahu in January of 2023.

Oahu may be the third largest of the Hawaiian islands by size, but it receives the most visitors by a huge margin. The island has 112 miles of beautiful coastline, offering a wide variety of beaches to enjoy.

Ehukai Beach, home of the infamous Banzai Pipeline on Oahu

There are peaceful man-made lagoons, like Ko Olina (home to the Disney Aulani resort), and rugged, relatively undeveloped beaches, like Yokohama Bay, with white sand and warm turquoise water.

Oahu's beaches are grouped into four areas, depending on their geographic location on the island. The famous North Shore has iconic surfing beaches, like Waimea Bay and Ehukai Beach, home of the Banzai Pipeline.

The South Shore is where Waikiki is located, as well as other famous leisure beaches. These huge, wide beaches are bordered with tall palm trees and luxury resort hotels.

The Westside's beaches are referred to as Leeward Coast beaches , which means they are protected from the wind by the island. This is where you'll find peaceful beaches with gentle surf, like Ko Olina and Turtle Bay.

On the Eastside, referred to as the Windward Coast , you'll find popular yet unspoiled beaches, like Waimanalo and Makapuu.

No matter which side of Oahu you choose, you can be guaranteed that you will be spoiled with idyllic and impressive beaches. Plan your visit with our list of the best beaches on Oahu.

1. Lanikai Beach

3. hanauma bay, 4. turtle bay, 5. waimea bay, 6. waimanalo beach, 7. ko olina, 8. yokohama bay, 9. kailua beach, 10. sunset beach, 11. sandy beach, 12. ehukai beach, 13. makapuu beach, 14. pokai bay beach, map of beaches on oahu, hi.

Lanikai Beach

Try to disagree with locals that Lanikai is not the best beach on Oahu, and you'll be put in your place very quickly. Of course, one look at Lanikai, and you'll soon see why it's often considered to be the best beach on the island.

Lanikai Beach delivers all the necessary elements for the perfect beach experience. It is close enough to Honolulu to be considered accessible for a day trip to the beach, but it is far enough removed that you'll likely have a large chunk of the beach to yourself. The water is warm, calm, and clear, thanks to an offshore reef , and the sand is sugary and sun-bleached.

The beach is not far from the town of Kailua on the Windward Coast, fringing a residential neighborhood. Parking can be a challenge, but if you do manage to snag a spot, you'll be glad you did.

The beach is popular for sailing and sea kayaking , as well as snorkeling . You'll likely spot a fair number of sea turtles at Lanikai. Just be sure to give them 10 feet of space, which is required by law.

Lanikai makes for a great alternative to the much more popular Hanauma Bay, which requires reservations in advance to visit.

Waikiki

Although it may be the epicenter of Hawaii tourism and tourists, the entire Waikiki Beach still manages to deliver that ultimate Hawaiian beach experience.

You have two miles of bright, fluffy white-sand beaches bordered by tall, gently swaying palm trees with warm, clear, bright-blue water. Many parts of the beach are roped off for swimming and protected by jetties, so the waves are very gentle. There are eight different beaches along Waikiki Beach (Kahanamoku Beach, Fort DeRussy, Gray's Beach, Royal Hawaiian Beach, Kuhio Beach, Queens Beach, San Souci Beach, and Kaimana Beach) each offering slightly different beach experiences.

Waikiki Beach

The beach is fronted by luxury hotels and resorts, with Kalakaua Avenue in front of them, which is lined with stores and luxury retailers.

Hanauma Bay

Idyllic Hanauma Bay, formed in the cone of an extinct volcano, is like a giant aquarium. The park is a very popular snorkeling spot (all visitors need to view a safety and environmental protection lecture before entering), and it really is like snorkeling in a giant aquarium.

Only 30 minutes from downtown Honolulu, this aquatic Hawaii state park is a very popular place for both beach fun and snorkeling. The very protected bay is filled with all kinds of sea life. Even first-time snorkelers will be blown away by what they see. It doesn't take much effort; you can just float on the surface and look down. The warm, clear water covers coral reefs, which attract all kinds of fish and creatures.

The park has very strict rules (like no sunscreen allowed), ensuring its preservation and enjoyment for future generations. To control crowds, attendance is limited. There is an entry charge (well worth it for the experience) and a charge for an optional little shuttle (also worth it after you're tired from snorkeling all day) to take you up and down the hill from the parking area. Hanauma Bay has a large beach area with lifeguards, restrooms, showers, and a snack bar.

Many package day trips to Hanauma Bay are available from all the Waikiki resorts, but a stay at The Kahala Hotel & Resort puts you about five miles away. This large luxury resort is right on the beach in the residential neighborhood of Kahala. It's popular for people who don't want to stay in downtown Waikiki but want a beachfront hotel experience. The resort has several options, a range of accommodations, and its own dolphin lagoon.

The Kahala Hotel & Resort even participates in a state-wide sustainability initiative called Malama Hawaii, which offers guests a discount on their stay in exchange for participating in mindful travel. You can do things like help with a beach clean-up, take a guided hike to learn about coastal restoration, or visit a local organic farm.

People enjoying Turtle Bay Beach

Out along Oahu's iconic North Shore , but well enough past the most popular surfing beaches that it is considerably quieter, sits Turtle Bay. Also known as Kawela Bay, this sheltered crescent of beach is perched all the way at the northernmost part of Oahu. In fact, you can walk to Kahuku Point from the beach, which is the northernmost point on the island.

Turtle Bay gets its name from the large population of sea turtles that live and hang out here. The surf is gentle enough that it's good for swimming and snorkeling , but you will want to be aware of the rocky bottom. Water shoes are likely a good idea.

Turtle Bay beach

This part of the island is home to the Turtle Bay Resort , which has a restaurant on the beach. The views from Turtle Bay Resort are stunning, and the prices are relatively reasonable, as the rooms and amenities are more mid-range than luxury. The resort is a little isolated, and a car is necessary for any off-property activities.

This part of Oahu has tons of hiking trails to discover, too. You can spend hours wandering the pathways around Turtle Bay. A golf course is here, too, which also has spectacular ocean views from many of its holes.

Waimea Bay

Driving along the North Shore towards the town of Haleiwa, one beach, in particular, will catch your breath as you round the bend near the entrance to Waimea Canyon —Waimea Bay. This beautifully wide beach has powder-soft, white sand and a beautiful swath of turquoise water.

This happens to be one of the best beaches on Oahu for surfing , as well as swimming, depending on the season.

The biggest waves at Waimea Bay thrash in the winter season. The surf is so famous that the beach actually got a mention in The Beach Boys' hit Surfing' USA . During the summer months, however, the beach is as calm as bath water and so becomes a top spot for swimming and snorkeling .

Waimea Bay has basic facilities (public restrooms and outdoor showers) and is well-guarded with lifeguards. The sand is powder smooth, and the beach is quite wide.

Waimea Beach Park

After a day of water sports, get a bite with the locals at one of the many food trucks that line the Kamehameha Highway near all the popular surf breaks (including Waimea).

If the surf at Waimea Bay is consistently above 20 feet during the winter months, the beach becomes the host of The Eddie Aikau Big Wave Invitational , the biggest surfing event in the world . The Eddie brings together surfers, alternates, and international legends to test their skills on these monster waves. They call it the Super Bowl of Surfing, and it's such an exciting event partly because it is not held every year. Conditions have to be just right. The event brings thousands of spectators to the North Shore of Oahu.

Waimanalo Beach

This is a vast, four-mile-long beach on the Windward or east coast of the island. Windward means it faces the wind, unlike the beaches on the west coast, which are protected from the wind by the island itself.

Waimanalo is a typical Hawaiian beach: wide and flat, with good facilities along with picnic areas. The waves are small here, but it's popular for bodyboarding and bodysurfing.

Ko Olina

A short drive from downtown Honolulu will put you along Oahu's Leeward Coast, which is known for some of its most luxurious hotel options, like the Four Seasons Resort Oahu at Ko Olina or Aulani, a Disney Resort & Spa . These resorts sit near one of Oahu's top beaches, which is also open to non-resort guests.

Ko Olina

Ko Olina Resort and Marina is a man-made, beautifully land-sculpted area with lagoons and beaches, making it one of the top spots in Oahu for couples, as well as families . But non-guests are welcome to use the beach, too.

Ko Olina has a few facilities, and restaurants are available at all the surrounding hotels.

Yokohama Bay

Another Leeward Coast beach, Yokohama Bay is the last beach along that part of the coast.

The Keawaula Beach area is the perfect spot to relax; the sandy bottom reflects the sunlight and turns the water a bright turquoise. Visually, it's one of the most beautiful beaches in Hawaii and great for photographers (and Instagram stars).

The bright, sandy, gently curving beach around the bay is perfect for enjoying the Hawaiian sun while looking out for the occasional pod of dolphins swimming by. There's a nearby hiking trail that will take you up to a point overlooking the entire beach and bay, perfect for selfies.

Kailua Beach

Kailua Beach Park is only a mile up the road from Lanikai Beach and is constantly ranked as one of America's best beaches .

You get three wide miles of white sandy beach, with warm, gentle, greenish-blue water. The beach is part of a 35-acre park with all kinds of outdoor sports and recreation facilities. There are also businesses nearby in Kailua for dining or shopping, including Island Snow, President Obama's favorite place for Hawaiian shaved ice.

If you want to stay in the area, you can opt for one of the many small guesthouses and bed-and-breakfasts in the little town of Kailua.

Sunset Beach

This famous two-mile-long surfing beach is on the North Shore and also has dramatically different conditions depending on the season. In the winter, it has truly giant waves and is very dangerous for all but the best swimmers and professional surfers. In the summer, it's incredibly calm and gentle, perfect for families, swimming, and shoreline snorkeling. Aside from the waves, it also has beautiful clear water and white sandy beaches.

For a break from the beach, the hotel is right next door to the Polynesian Cultural Center. This is a Polynesian-themed, family-focused tourist attraction and living museum, one of the island's most popular tourist destinations.

Sandy Beach

This wide, large beach is famous for bodysurfing and President Obama, as it's near the house he stays in on his Oahu visits. It's about 10 minutes past Hanauma Bay and about 30 minutes from Waikiki. Even though it's close to Waikiki, it feels more remote as it's surrounded by tall cliffs.

Sandy Beach is in a residential area, and there is always plenty of open space on the sand. The beach park has two entrances and there is a lot of parking, although it can fill up on weekends. You can take the bus from Waikiki, there's a bus stop right at the beach.

The beach has soft sand, and there are basic facilities (showers and bathrooms). Sandy Beach is also a popular spot for food trucks.

Sandy Beach

This is a big surf spot, with typically strong waves year-round, making it not a good beach for swimmers. Those waves break very close to the shore, so it's very popular with bodysurfers and boogie boarders. The waves also break hard, and there are a lot of riptides, so this spot is for very experienced bodysurfers only.

This is a great alternative to Hanauma Bay if you are unable to get a reservation. It's far less crowded than Hanauma Bay, and the sand is particularly soft and dreamy. It's a quick drive from Diamond Head Crater, so you can easily hit both in one day.

Ehukai Beach

This North Shore beach is known for one thing: it's the home of the infamous Banzai Pipeline. The Pipeline is caused by huge, dangerous waves that form and break over a sharp reef just under the surface of the water.

Ehukai Beach

The powerful surf, combined with the physics of the reef, produces the enormous tunnels of water that are known as the Banzai Pipeline . It's one of the most dangerous places in the world to surf, which makes it a great beach to watch surfers. Every day, professional surfers come from all across the globe to tackle the enormous waves. You can catch the annual Billabong Pipeline Masters event, which is held every year at the Banzai Pipeline. It's also one of the most beloved competitions in the surf world.

Makapuu Beach

Makapuu Beach, only 30 minutes outside Waikiki, delivers epic sunrise views, lots of cool lava rocks for IG backgrounds, and some great waves. The beach is especially famous for body surfing, and the waves are consistently good. The water is dangerous and there can be strong rip currents, so this spot is best for expert body surfers. It's body surfing only - no surfboards are permitted here.

The beach is next to Makapuu Point, the most eastward part of Oahu. There's a lighthouse on the point and some cool sea caves in the rocks beneath it.

The 1,000-foot-long beach is bright white with powder-soft sand. The white sand makes the water a light turquoise color. The beach is much wider during the summertime, and a lot of the sand erodes due to the high winter waves.

After enjoying the beach, take a hike along the adjacent Makapuu Point Lighthouse Trail. The hike is about three miles round-trip to and from the lighthouse and provides some seriously jaw-dropping ocean views along the way.

Aerial view of Pokai Bay Beach

This dog-friendly beach area is fun for both four-legged and two-legged beachgoers. Dogs are welcome (on-leash) in the water and on the sand up to the high water point. It's very popular with locals and especially family groups. The bay is very protected, with no currents or real waves, so it's perfect for swimming and wading.

The Pokai Bay Beach park area has bathrooms, showers, and lots of shaded picnic areas.

12 Best Beaches on Oahu With Stunning Views and Epic Waves

Time to pack your boogie boards and sunglasses.

Laura La Monaca/Travel + Leisure

What makes one beach better than the next ? For some, it’s soft sand you can happily sink your feet into, or cerulean waters flecked only by the coral or kelp visible through it. Others seek whitecapped waves that demand to be ridden by a surf or boogie board, or an underwater oasis teeming with sea life, easily accessed so long as you packed your snorkel.

All this is to say that beauty lies in the eye of the beholder. But no matter the sort of beach you’re after, we’d wager a hefty sum that Oahu has it. The most populous island in Hawaii is home to more than 100 beaches — some right near the tropical metropolis of Honolulu, others more isolated and quiet. These are 12 of the best beaches on Oahu — catch some rays or waves for us while you’re there.

Haleiwa Beach Park

Julie Thurston/Getty Images

Though Oahu’s North Shore is known for its massive waves, the sea at Haleiwa Beach Park is relatively calm. Bring your snorkel, be on the lookout for turtles, and when you’ve worked up an appetite, walk the mile to Haleiwa town for must-try eats at Giovanni’s Shrimp Truck, Matsumoto Shave Ice, and Kono’s, to name a few.

Ko Olina Beach Park

youli zhao/Getty Images

On the west side of the island, Ko Olina is home to four lagoons (and several luxury resorts ), and rock levies break the waves and ensure the waters here are calm for swimming. It’s quieter in this area, especially when compared to beaches in Honolulu.

Shark’s Cove

Kubrak78/Getty Images

Part of Pupukea Beach Park, this North Shore spot is incredible at low tide. Wade around the shallow basin dotted with lava rock — there are no sharks, despite the name, but you’ll spot plenty of other sea creatures. Pack a mask and snorkel.

Waikiki Beach

Ryan Tishken/EyeEm/Getty Images

This is Hawaii’s most iconic beach , boasting brilliant turquoise waters and views of Diamond Head, a volcanic cone that stands nearly 600 feet tall. A large reef breaks the waves here, making it a great spot for floating, snorkeling, and paddleboarding. Plus, you’re near all the city amenities you could need before or after a beach day. Fancy cocktail at The Royal Hawaiian’s Mai Tai Bar , anyone?

Kuilima Cove

Eric Broder Van Dyke/Getty Images

This tiny cove is home to Turtle Beach and nestled just east of Turtle Bay Resort . Open to the public, the calm waters here are good for kids, and turtles and monk seals are somewhat common sightings. Head east by foot and you’ll soon arrive at Kaihalulu Beach, another great stretch of sand on the North Shore.

Lanikai Beach

Regularly named the island’s most beautiful beach , Lanikai is ideal for swimming and watching the sunrise. There’s not much here in terms of sea life, but folks love the view of Mokulua (a.k.a. “the Mokes”), a pair of oft-photographed islets just off the coast.

Kailua Beach Park

This beach is Lanikai’s neighbor, but it’s more than two miles long and particularly suited for families, thanks to its chill and easy waters. It also has bathroom facilities (many beaches do not) and picnic tables. Grab a to-go meal from any number of Kailua town eateries, like Boots & Kimo’s or Paia Fish Market.

Sunset Beach

Sean Davey/Getty Images

Among Oahu’s many surf spots is Sunset Beach. The waves here aren’t too massive, so as long as you have a bit of surf experience under your belt, you should enjoy the waves. And given its name, it’s great for hanging out at sundown as well.

joSon/Getty Images

Winter brings waves that climb nearly 30 feet in this North Shore bay, but summer waters are calmer for swimming, snorkeling, and diving. Its location also makes it great for a joint trip to Waimea Falls, accessed right behind the beach via Waimea Valley.

Makaha Beach

Set on Oahu’s western coast, this beach lures visitors with its beautiful sunsets and soft, white sand. It’s also loved for swimming outside the winter, when waves tend to get a bit larger and currents stronger.

Hanauma Bay

artran/Getty Images

With gorgeous turquoise waters, Hanauma Bay has long been a popular snorkeling destination , to the point that the state has instituted ticketed and timed entry . Arrive with your “Leave No Trace” mentality so future generations can enjoy it, too. Sea animals like this enclosed bay, so you’ll likely spot tropical fish and morays. In the winter, this is a whale-watching spot as well.

Oahu Beach Safety Tips

Now that you know all about the best beaches in Oahu, it is time to talk about beach safety.

Swim with a buddy:  The first and most important tip we can give you is always swimming with a buddy. Many dangers lurk in the ocean (strong currents, rip tides, etc.), and it is always best to swim with someone else just in case something happens.

Check the weather:  Another thing to remember is the weather conditions. Check the weather forecast before you head out to the beach, as strong winds and high surf can make swimming and surfing dangerous.

North Shore beaches in the winter: Be very careful when swimming or surfing at any North Shore beaches during the winter months.

These beaches are known for their giant waves, and even the strongest swimmers can get into trouble if they are not careful.

Beach warning signs:  If you see any dangerous or high surf warning signs, please heed them! These are put in place for a reason, and it is not worth risking your life by swimming or surfing in these conditions.

Do not leave valuables in the car:  Please do not leave any valuables in your car when you go to the beach.

There have been many theft cases from cars parked at the beach; it is always best to leave everything out of sight.

Know your swimming abilities:  Always know your swimming abilities and do not try to swim in places when you are not comfortable. There are plenty of beaches on Oahu for everyone, so find a beach appropriate for your skill level.

Bring water and sunscreen:  Last but not least, always bring plenty of water and sunscreen with you to the beach. The sun can be very harsh in Hawaii. Make sure to stay hydrated and protect your skin.

Lanikai Beach

East oahu .

If you want unbelievable views, miles and miles of soft white sand, crystal clear waters and amazing sunsets, then Lanikai Beach should be on your Oahu Must-See Beaches list. The name speaks for itself, as Lanikai translates to "Heavenly Sea," and it’s recognized as one of the most beautiful beaches in the world. The water is calm so the swimming here is spectacular and there are also two mini islands nearby that you can get to by kayak.

Sunset Beach

North shore.

The famous Sunset Beach features over a dozen different reef breaks, and thanks to its location along Oahu’s fabled North Shore, it has been considered to be one of the biggest surf destinations since the 1960s. California surf journalist Drew Campion once noted, “Sunset Beach is the standard by which other waves are measured, and the best surfers here are the best surfers, period." And with over 2 miles of soft sand, it’s the ideal spot for lounging and taking in one of its famous sunsets.

This legendary North Shore beach is known for its mammoth waves during the winter season and it’s one of the first surf spots in the world for daredevil surfers! If your surfing skills are really on point, you’ll want to visit from November through February when the waves are at their peak. During the summer, the swells here recede so beachgoers can enjoy swimming and snorkeling safely. Whether you’re here for the adrenaline rush or simply looking for a little R&R, Waimea Bay Beach is simply stunning

North Shore

Also known as Kawela Bay, this North Shore slice of sand is a popular surf site. And while swimming conditions here aren’t ideal due to the rocky bottom, the views are gorgeous year round. However, note that the exquisite views here can be a bit "overwhelming," so to speak, so you may want to head to over to the nearby Turtle Bay Resort for a little pampering when needed.

Kualoa Regional Park Beach

Located across from Kualoa Ranch is a fantastic beach park with the most breathtaking views down Oahu’s East Coast. This remote beach boasts the best of Hawaii's natural landscape, with lush greenery and a sandy shoreline thrown into one; and it's also a great place for wetland bird spotting.

Waikiki Beach

South shore.

The best-known beach in the South Shore area is also one of the most popular beaches in the world. Waikiki Beach is a surfing, canoeing, and paddle boarding hot spot thanks to its small but long-lasting wave break. And lined with hotels, bars, and restaurants, it’s one of the most convenient places for vacationers from around the world. Hit the Waikiki Beach Walk in the evening time to enjoy the island's liveliest nightlife.

Yokohama Bay

This is the last sandy stretch on the Leeward Coast and it’s a superb place for dolphin spotting. Surf is good here, the waters are beautiful, and there’s a scenic hiking trail from Kaena Point located close by. Yokohama Bay is one of Oahu’s most remote beaches and features pristine sand, azure waters, and a great way to get away from the hustle and bustle of the Waikiki area.

LET ME DO THE WORK FOR YOU!

11 Best North Shore Oahu Beaches In Hawaii

The north shore beaches of Oahu island in Hawaii are known for their fantastic sand and waves, snorkeling and sea turtle spotting, bargain food trucks, and overall laid back vibes.

To be fair, the north shore is no secret anymore, and there’s plenty of tourist traffic here, but it still manages to be one of the more quiet and undeveloped corners of Oahu island, and the wildlife sightings are as good as ever.

Whether you’re a surfer, a snorkeler, or a family with kids, you should definitely check out some of the best north shore Oahu beaches. Here’s a list of our favorites!

North Shore Shark Diving

If you want a unique thrill in Hawaii, you can cage dive with sharks on the north shore of Oahu! This is a popular activity where they take you a few miles out from the coast by boat and let you see sharks up close.

The most popular shark diving tours have a metal cage for protection, and you can see sandbar sharks, Galapagos sharks, and hammerheads.

It’s a snorkeling trip, not scuba diving, so you don’t need any certification (although swimming experience helps). This is a very high rated activity in Oahu!

Best North Shore Beaches

1. sunset beach.

This is a top spot for watching the sunset on the north shore, which is how it gets its name. However, it’s also a great beach in its own right.

Sunset beach has a long strip of soft white sand that’s perfect for relaxing during the day, and there’s even a photogenic bent palm tree where you can take pictures!

Please don’t climb on this palm tree though, because it’s delicate and we want to keep enjoying it for as long as we can.

Best North Shore Oahu Beaches Hawaii Palm Tree

Sunset Beach on the North Shore is known for this funky palm tree.

The summer waves at Sunset Beach are mellow, while the winter waves are some of the biggest on the north shore. However, you can still relax on the sand even when the water’s not as swimmable.

This beach also has public bathrooms and showers across the street that you can use, with a bus stop and a fair amount of car parking. Don’t forget to check out the nearby food trucks if you’re feeling hungry.

Overall, it’s definitely one of the best north shore Oahu beaches. If I had to pick just one as my favorite, it’d probably be this one.

The sunsets here are legendary, and it’s usually not too crowded!

This is how Sunset Beach gets its name.

2. Ka’ena Point

The northwestern tip of Oahu island, known as Ka’ena Point , is only reachable by hiking, but it’s well worth the effort.

This is an amazing place to chill by the ocean, and it’s a wildlife sanctuary so you can see humpback whales, Hawaiian monk seals, and Albatross birds.

There are small sandy beaches along the way, as well as tide pools and a rock arch. It’s definitely one of the best hikes on the north shore.

Best North Shore Oahu Beaches Hawaii Kaena Point

Ka’ena Point views

Ka’ena Point is a 5-6 mile roundtrip hike, but the trail is flat all the way, making it pretty easy overall.

This is one of the more family friendly hikes on Oahu and it’s great for kids, although I’d try to avoid the midday heat. This is also one of the best sunset spots on the whole island.

Keep in mind if you do Ka’ena Point for sunset then you’ll be walking back to your car in the dark, so it’s a good idea to bring a headlight!

3. Haleiwa Beach

Haleiwa is a historic town in Oahu that serves as the main town center of the north shore. It has a laidback vibe with lots of fun shops and a population of only 5,000 people, although the tourist traffic makes it seem a bit busier.

There are actually three different beaches in Haleiwa. First, you have the main beach, which is a long stretch of sand with mountain views and occasional turtle sightings.

Next, there’s the nearby Haleiwa Ali’i beach, which is smaller but has public restrooms, showers, and a big parking lot right by the beach.

Last, but not least, you can find Haleiwa Beach Park on the east side of the harbor, with a bus stop, showers, and plenty of parking. We also saw sea turtles swimming there.

All three of the beaches in Haleiwa are very nice and worth visiting!

After checking out the beaches in Haleiwa, don’t forget to hit up Matsumoto’s Shave Ice to cool off.

They have dozens of fun shave ice flavors like bubblegum, guava, lemon, and passion fruit, plus add-ons like ice cream, Azuki beans, and Mochi (Japanese rice balls).

This shop dates back to 1951, and they make some of the best shave ice we’ve had anywhere in Oahu, Hawaii!

4. Laniakea Beach

If you’re wanting to see turtles, this is definitely one of the best north shore Oahu beaches to visit. In fact, it’s the single best beach for spotting turtles anywhere on the island.

There’s almost always one or two big turtles here, relaxing and lounging on the sand. We’ve come to this beach many times and always spotted turtles!

Remember to keep a healthy distance from the turtles, because they’re protected under Hawaiian law and it’s illegal to touch them (fines can be anywhere from $1,000 to $10,500 USD).

Aside from the sea turtles, Laniakea is also a pretty nice little beach in its own right, with clean sand and palm trees, although it’s not a very big beach and the shore is too rocky for swimming (unless you’re a turtle).

Basically, this is a place to stop for awhile, not stay. Parking is pretty scarce too, so you’ll want to arrive early. The best time to see turtles seems to be from around 11 AM to 3 PM, when they like sunning on the beach.

5. Waimea Bay

In the summer, Waimea Beach is popular for its jumping rock. In the winter, this bay is a world famous surfing spot with huge waves up to 40 feet high (12 meters).

There are bathrooms, showers, and a fair sized parking lot right next to the beach, although it tends to fill up easily, which leaves you with street parking up the hill.

If you want to do more exploring, you can also check out the nearby Waimea Valley, which has an easy hiking trail with a waterfall and botanical gardens.

Waimea Bay Beach

6. Aweoweo Beach Park

This is a beautiful family friendly beach that’s a bit of a hidden gem, just west of Haleiwa.

It’s a small, quiet beach park that has bathrooms, showers, handwashing sinks, and a picnic area with a drinking fountain. This is a neighborhood beach, so it’s limited to street parking only.

Aweoweo Beach has nice, soft sand and occasional sea turtle sightings. Overall, it’s one of the best north shore beaches, and it’s perfect for a family BBQ or something similar!

7. Shark’s Cove

This is a little cove that’s well known for its tide pools and snorkeling opportunities. Good water shoes are highly recommended here.

Don’t be scared off by the name — you aren’t likely to run into any dangerous sharks here, although the cove does have plenty of fish, turtles, and other marine life to see. You may occasionally see a black tip reef shark swimming through the underwater lava tubes, but they’re usually shy and harmless to humans.

There are public showers and restrooms in the parking area for Shark’s Cove, plus a fair amount of parking spots, and you can find some food trucks across the street.

The summer months are generally the best time to visit the cove because of calmer waves and gentler waters. Animals to see include parrot fish, eels, trigger fish, and more.

Remember to give plenty of space to the fish and coral, and take only pictures, so everyone can continue to enjoy this place for many years to come!

8. Ehukai Beach / Banzai Pipeline

This is one of the most famous surf spots in the world, so lots of people come here to watch the pro surfers riding the giant waves in the winter.

For the most impressive waves, you’ll generally want to visit between November and February. Don’t try to swim at this time if there are warning signs, because the water can be dangerous.

Ehukai Beach sits across the street from the Sunset Beach Elementary School, and there are lots of public bathrooms and showers to use, so that’s handy.

If you want to do some short trekking, check out the nearby Ehukai pillbox hike, which has nice ridge line views of the north shore from above, as well as a couple of old military bunkers (‘pillboxes’) that you can explore.

9. Turtle Bay

This is a nice man-made bay that’s also home to the comfy Turtle Bay Resort , which is actually the only resort on the north shore of Oahu, Hawaii.

You don’t have to be a hotel guest to visit the beach, and parking is free for outsiders, although hotel guests will have more opportunities to see turtles, as well as the sunrise and sunset.

Turtle sightings are common on this beach! Just remember to give them plenty of space so they can do as they please. Overall, it’s a nice beach and never too crowded.

10. Malaekahana

The Malaekahana State Recreation Area has a long beach with white sand and almost no people. It’s totally different from the crowds at Waikiki.

Technically this beach is located on the northeast corner of Oahu, so it’s separate from the other north shore beaches on this list, but it’s still easy to visit if you’re driving to the north shore from the windward side of the island.

This is a great place for a family camp or day picnic. The beaches are nice, the facilities are good, there’s lots of parking, and everything is totally quiet.

It’s free to visit the beach, but camping permits are required to stay overnight. They’re easy to get and the prices are reasonable. For supplies, you can find a Foodland shopping center and Ace Hardware in nearby La’ie. Enjoy!

Malaekahana Beach

Malaekahana Beach

11. Hukilau Beach

This is another beach on the northeast side of Oahu, about 15 minutes’ drive from the other north shore beaches in this travel guide.

Hukilau Beach Park is just a short distance from Malaekahana, and it’s another quiet, family friendly beach with soft white sand. Waves are medium size, and the beach has plenty of space with very few people.

Overall, even though it’s technically located outside of the main north shore area, this is a great beach to visit while driving north from the windward side of Oahu!

Ko Olina Beach is home to several resorts, including the Four Seasons Resort Oahu at Ko Olina and Marriott's Ko Olina Beach Club, and is made up of four different lagoons that are ideal for swimming and snorkeling. Turquoise water laps on to the golden sand of Polihua Beach, one of the best Hawaii beaches, on Lanai

Located on the northern shore of Lanai, secluded Polihua Beach is harder to reach than some of the other top beaches in Hawaii (accessing it requires a four-wheel drive vehicle or a professional guide). However, this beach is 2 miles long and blissfully empty, making it perfect for sunbathing or enjoying the views without any crowds. Strong ocean currents make the waters along Polihua Beach too dangerous for swimming, but it's still a great place to get away from it all.

While swimming is safe for part of the year, visitors should avoid getting in the water here from October through March.

Papakolea Beach: Big Island

The green sand beach at Papakolea Beach is surrounded by rocky gray cliffs and blue ocean waves

After you've visited a few of Hawaii's black sand beaches Papakolea Beach , also known as Green Sand Beach, should be next on your list. While this unique shore on Hawaii's Big Island offers no amenities and often experiences a strong surf that makes for dangerous swimming conditions, it's worth a visit just to view the stark contrast of the green sand, which is made that way by a common mineral called olivine. Note that reaching the shoreline requires a hike from the parking lot and that there is little to no shade along the way.

Waikiki Beach: Oahu

Beautiful Waikiki Beach in Honolulu, Hawaii, is flanked by a row of hotels. The striking turquoise water features a few surfers and waves.

Waikiki Beach is located along the south shore of Honolulu, which boasts many of Oahu's most fabulous hotels and resorts, including Halekulani and The Royal Hawaiian, a Luxury Collection Resort, Waikiki . This means you'll share the sand with thousands of tourists in the area, but that you'll also be able to find dining and entertainment with ease. Not only does Waikiki Beach stand in the shadows of the beautiful Diamond Head landmark, but it's also an ideal spot for swimming, snorkeling and surfing lessons for beginners.

Top 5 Beaches on Oahu

By Sarah Pacheco

Facebook

As an island chain, Hawaii is home to hundreds of beaches, each possessing its own set of unique qualities.

What makes one beach great for surfers and water-sport enthusiasts does not necessarily make for a great destination for families or vacationers looking to relax on the shore

To help narrow down the search for the your own personal perfect beach destination, the following list is a compilation of what are widely agreed to be the top five beaches on Oahu.

Lanikai Beach

Ocean waters, small islets and blue skies over Lanikai Beach on Oahu.

A perfect day at Lanikai Beach. (Photo courtesy of Neal Kido.)

Nestled in the sleepy beach town of Kailua on Oahu’s Windward side, Lanikai Beach is one of Hawaii’s most picturesque and famous beaches.

An offshore reef keeps the water calm year-round, offering excellent swimming conditions from January to December. Less than a mile offshore are two small islands that house bird sanctuaries and those looking for an adventure can easily reach the islands by kayak.

Other water sports to enjoy on the clear-blue waters include snorkeling (reef fish and sea turtles are common sights), sailing and windsurfing, while half a mile of fine white sand is the perfect setting for sunbathing. Beachgoers should note that parking is limited, as Lanikai Beach is sandwiched between residential housing.

Kailua Beach Park

Kailua Beach waves, emerald blue waters and white sand beaches.

Warm and gentle, Kailua Beach waves are perfect for the family. (Photo courtesy of Neal Kido.)

Located approximately one mile up the road from Lanikai Beach, Kailua Beach Park often is cited as one of Hawaii’s best beaches.

In fact, Kailua Beach Park was named America’s Best Beach by coastal expert Dr. Stephen Leatherman, aka Dr. Beach, in 2019.

With nearly three miles of light-colored sand and crystal-clear water, the park is the perfect spot to spend the day. While many enjoy playing in the gentle waves or learning how to windsurf, the 35-acre beach park also boasts a volleyball court and ample picnic areas where families can relax in the shade with a refreshing treat from local eatery Island Snow, a favorite spot of President Obama.

Other nearby establishments, such as Buzz’s Original Steak House and Kalapawai Market, are perfect for picking up a quick lunch or souvenir, or choose to spend a bit more time and book a room at one of the many local bed and breakfasts or vacation rentals in the area.

Waimanalo Bay Beach Park

Stretching nearly five miles from Wailea Point to Makapuu, Waimanalo Bay Beach Park is one of the longest beaches on the island. The northern section of the beach is known to locals as Bellows and was once part of an air force base that is now closed. (The area is still used today as a popular vacation spot for the military.)

Despite rougher waters, which make it less suitable for inexperienced swimmers, the size, scenery and soft sand make Waimanalo a classic Hawaiian beach that is great for boogie boarding, fishing, sunbathing or walking along the shoreline.

Dr. Beach named Waimanalo Beach Park “America’s Best Beach” in 2015 .

Waikiki Beach

Waikiki Beach displays the beautiful reef patterns just outside the protected lagoons.

A unique bird’s eye view of Waikiki Beach displays the beautiful reef patterns just outside the protected lagoons. (Photo courtesy of Neal Kido.)

Possibly the most famous beach in all of Hawaii, Waikiki Beach has been an epicenter for tourists since the 1950s. The 2-mile stretch of white sand coast is actually divided into several sections by various hotels, but each is connected to the other by a boardwalk. The peaceful waters offer good swimming and surfing year-round, and other fun activities abound, including surfing, canoe racing, stand-up paddling, volleyball and more. Attractions such as the Honolulu Zoo and Waikiki Aquarium are mere minutes from the beach, while world-class restaurants, entertainment and shopping destinations offer respite from a day in the water.

Sunset Beach

A rainbow off of Sunset Beach on Oahu's North Shore.

Passing showers create a glorious rainbow off of Sunset Beach, North Shore. (Photo courtesy of Neal Kido.)

Situated on the historic North Shore of Oahu, Sunset Beach is a beautifully long expanse of beach that has enamored both locals and tourists for decades. During the summer, the blindingly blue ocean waters are calm and crystal-clear, making it the perfect destination for swimmers, snorkelers and families. But as the winter months roll in, so do the large waves, making conditions suitable only for the most experienced of surfers. Surf fans are still welcome to watch pros ride these giants from the safety of the shoreline and take photos of this awe-inspiring natural phenomenon.

1. Where to Escape the Crowds on Waikiki Beach

Waikiki Beach is a 2-mile-long, gold sand beach lined with highrise hotels. I love Waikiki Beach for the beautiful, clear water and views of the iconic Diamond Head.

There is so much that makes Waikiki Beach famous , hence the crowds flock to this beach. Half of all visitors to Hawaii stay near Waikiki, usually for their first visit (see our first time to Hawaii guide for planning tips! )

Here is how to find a secluded section of Waikiki Beach. Waikiki Beach is divided up into multiple sections or beaches. The far sides of the 2-mile stretch of beach have far fewer people than the areas in the middle, like in front of the Royal Hawaiian or Moana Surfrider hotels.

To escape the crowds in Waikiki, go to Kahanamoku Beach ( click for directions ) near the Hilton Hawaiian Village Resort. Kahanamoku Beach has been rated the best beach in the country by Dr. Beach for its wide, sandy beach and its great spot for swimming. You will also get epic views of Diamond Head. And a good place to see the fireworks, see below!

Our second favorite secluded spot in Waikiki is on the Diamond Head side of the beach. Go to Queen’s Beach ( click for directions ) to find a place for your towel. We like this part of the beach as there is the Waikiki Wall (small jetty), volleyball courts, and shade near the park side of the beach.

things to do waikiki oahu hawaii waikiki beach

2. Surf Waikiki Beach

Waikiki Beach is well known for its surf break. The long, slow rolling waves are perfect to learn how to surf. You can take surf lessons ( Erica was so much better at surfing than me ) or grab a board for $20 for three hours from dudes on the beach.

The surf breaks, starting on the Diamond Head side, are Publics, Queen’s, Canoes, Populars, Threes, Fours, Kaisers, and Rockpiles. You will easily see where everyone is surfing once you are on Waikiki Beach.

If you have never surfed before then a surf lesson ( our favorite surf school is at Publics ) is highly recommended to get you started safely.

A good surfboard rental location is between the banyan tree and the Kuhio Beach Hula Mound and the Duke Kahanamoku statue. You will find local vendors renting out surfboards. Bring cash and look for the surf racks.

Directions: Kuhio Beach Hula Mound, Kalakaua Ave., Honolulu, HI

Grab our favorite reef-safe, mineral-based sunscreens before you head into the water for surfing and swimming at the beaches below.

3. Friday Fireworks

The show is back! Every Friday night the Hilton Hawaiian Village has a 4-minute fireworks show. From June to September, the show starts at 8:00 PM. The show switches to a 7:45 PM start in the fall.

You don’t have to be a guest at the resort to see the show. Find a nice place on the beach near the hotel. The best viewing will be from Fort Derussy Beach Park ( click for directions ) to Kahanamoku Beach.

4. Acai Bowls at Tropical Tribe

Our favorite acai bowls in Waikiki are at Tropical Tribe. The small cafe with counter service has the best Brazilian acai bowls with fresh fruit in Waikiki. Located on the Ewa Side, near the Hilton Hawaiian Village, look for the small cafe at street level.

Directions: 1778 Ala Moana Blvd #101, Honolulu, HI 96815

5. Fresh Poke at Sato Seafood

There is nothing more authentic than fresh poke when you are in Hawaii. While we love getting poke at local grocery stores like Foodland, Sato Seafood serves up unique and delicious poke bowls right in Waikiki.

Order the Hawaiian Munchies or Spicy Maui Maui. You can’t go wrong with their generous portions and quick service. Eat there or take it a block to the beach.

Directions: 2310 Kūhiō Ave. #215, Honolulu, HI 96815

If Muragame Udon has too long of a line, Sato Seafood is right next door.

6. Japanese Noodle House

Sure the line can be long at Muragame Udon, but it is worth the wait in our opinion. Watch them make the noodles and cook your udon right in front of you.

Grab a tray, order your udon, and then pick up additional bites like tempura or spam musubi in this cafeteria-style restaurant.

Directions: 2310 Kūhiō Ave., Honolulu, HI 96815

7. Hula and Happy Hour

If you don’t have time to attend one of Oahu’s best luaus, then House Without a Key is a good substitute.

Directions: 2199 Kālia Rd, Honolulu, HI 96815

Located in the luxury Halekulani hotel, House Without a Key is an open-air patio lounge serving up amazing mai tais, pupus (appetizers), and a light dinner fare. But we come for world-class hula performances and live Hawaiian music.

With views of Diamond Head and the Hawaiian band playing under a 100-year-old kiawe tree, this happy hour shouldn’t be missed.

Things to Do on Oahu: Honolulu

Let’s escape from Waikiki to explore things to do in Honolulu. Honolulu is called the Manhattan of the Pacific with its highrise offices and apartment buildings. We love Honolulu for its culture, nightlife, and food. Such amazing food options due to the Pacific island cuisine.

Our favorite neighborhoods are Kapahulu, Kaka’ako, and Chinatown. We have things to do in each. Plus, don’t forget the culture with trips to ‘Iolani Palace and the Bishop Museum.

But our first thing to do is to beat jetlag with a hike.

See the map below for all these things to do in Honolulu.

8. Diamond Head Crater Hike

Diamond Head Crater Hike starts inside a 300,00-year-old volcano, about a 15-minute drive from Waikiki. A reservation for the Diamond Head hike is now required. The moderate 0.8-mile hike rises up 560 feet to an observation deck overlooking Waikiki and the east coast of Oahu.

Explore an old military bunker inside the volcano and take amazing photos of Waikiki. Rainbow views are possible with a morning hike. The gates open at 6:00 AM so come on over for those jetlagged travelers.

9. Leonard’s Bakery for Malasadas

Leonard’s Bakery makes it onto all things to do in Honolulu lists and for good reason. Their large, fluffy malasadas live up to the hype. Malasadas are Portuguese donuts with a fruit or chocolate filling.

The doughy pastries are light, warm, and delicious in the morning with a coffee. The line does get huge at their original location on Kapahulu Avenue just outside of Waikiki.

Directions: 933 Kapahulu Ave, Honolulu, HI 96816

best things to do oahu hawaii leonards malasadas

See if you can order online to skip the line (they discontinue the online service at times) or plan on arriving early.

Another way to skip the line is to visit one of the many MalasadaMobiles they have conveniently located around Oahu. Bring cash for those and they only serve three types of malasadas at them.

10. Ono Seafood

The colorful red building with an art mural on the side is hard to miss from Kapahulu Avenue. Locals flock to this seafood restaurant for poke and more fresh seafood dishes. The no-frills place is relaxing and delicious.

There are a lot of great restaurants on Kapahulu Avenue such as Rainbow Drive-In and Kono’s. You won’t go hungry on this avenue on the Diamond Head side of Waikiki.

Directions: 747 Kapahulu Ave, Honolulu, HI 96816

11. Waiola Shave Ice

Shave ice is a must when you visit Hawaii . The fluffy ice and the flavors are a must when it is hot out and it is always a nice, hot temperature in Hawaii.

Waiola Shave Ice is a classic. While there are few around Honolulu, the one below is the original and a short drive from Waikiki.

Directions: 2135 Waiola St, Honolulu, HI 96826

12. Honolulu Nightlife

Honolulu is the place to go (the only place to go) in Hawaii for nightlife. The Hawaiian Islands can feel sleepy as most bars and lounges hardly make it to midnight on the neighbor islands. But in Honolulu, you can find hip lounges, wine bars, and even some clubs.

For a little bar hopping in Waikiki, check out Lewers Street for Roy’s, Yard House, and some dive bars.

Our favorite area to go to in Honolulu is the hip and trendy restaurants and lounges in Chinatown. These award-winning restaurants, like Fete who is a 2022 James Beard winner, have great food and even better drinks.

Head to North Hotel Street in Chinatown to find the likes of Lucky Belly, The Manifest, Little Village Noodle House, O’Kims, The Dragon Upstairs, Bar 35, The Tchin Tchin! Bar, and so many more.

Directions to North Hotel Street: 35 N Hotel St, Honolulu, HI 96817

13. Ala Moana Beach

Ala Moana Beach is the place where locals go in Honolulu for the beach. The large beach park has its own L&L Hawaiian Barbecue, Magic Island Lagoon, and a well-protected beach for kids (keiki).

Located in front of the Ala Moana Shopping Center, an upscale shopping center with a great food court, and next to Waikiki, Ala Moana Beach doesn’t have the Waikiki crowds and is a good place to take the kids for a beach day.

Directions to Ala Moana Beach Park

For those families out there exploring Oahu, read our 23 Things to Do on Oahu with Kids for more ideas!

14. Kaka’ako Street Art

Kaka’ako is an old neighborhood of Honolulu that has been re-developed with condo towers, restaurants, and breweries. We like the breweries for dinner and drinks. But, you can make an evening out of this neighborhood by walking the murals.

things to do oahu hawaii honolulu kakaako murals

Kaka’ako has murals everywhere. Start at Mother Waldron Neighborhood Park and just follow the murals. You can’t miss them.

Directions: Cooke St, Honolulu, HI 96813

Watch our Escape from Waikiki video for our day out exploring unique things to do around Honolulu.

15. ‘Iolani Palace

The ‘Iolani Palace was the royal residence of the Kingdom of Hawaii. The palace had electricity and running water before the White House. Come to learn about the royal family, the forced overthrow of the kingdom, and Hawaiian history in this well-preserved, stately palace in the heart of Honolulu.

Directions: 364 S King St, Honolulu, HI 96813

‘Iolani Palace is located in Historic Downtown Honolulu. Across from the palace, you will find Ali’iolani Hale, home to the state supreme court and the famous King Kamehameha The Great Statue. You can take our favorite Pearl Harbor guided tour that includes a tour of historic Honolulu.

Historic Downtown Honolulu gets bedazzled for Christmas. From parades to Christmas craft festivals, you will love Honolulu in December. See our Things to Do in Hawaii During Christmas .

If you’re thinking of visiting Hawaii for a Christmas vacation, then you gotta read our 19 Tips to Plan Your Hawaii Christmas Vacation .

16. Historic Chinatown and the Arts District

As I mentioned in the Honolulu Nightlife thing to do, Chinatown is a fun part of the city to explore. A Chinatown walking tour is a wonderful way to hear the rich history and taste the food or go out and explore yourself.

The area has unique architecture and great food from Vietnamese to Chinese to Hawaiian and everything in between. There are also a lot of shopping and art galleries.

The first Friday of the month is home to a lively street festival. The art galleries turn into lounges and street performers fight for your attention. It is the place to be for First Friday .

Directions to Chinatown Parking Lot: 888 Nuuanu Ave, Honolulu, HI 96817

17. Best Honolulu Sunset Spot

Tantalus Look is the place to come for the sunset and amazing views of Waikiki and Diamond Head. Located 25 minutes (6 miles) from Waikiki, drive up a windy road to Pu’u Ualakaa State Park. Bring a picnic and a picnic blanket to sit on the lawn overlooking the grandeur of Honolulu and the Pacific Ocean.

The sunset view is best during the winter but even during the summer, this is worth visiting.

Directions: Nutridge St, Honolulu, HI 96822

things to do oahu hawaii honolulu sunset

18. Kamehameha Bakery

While everyone is lined up at Leonard’s Bakery just outside of Waikiki, drive over to Kahili Neighborhood for another famous bakery. Get their maladas or one of their many amazing donuts and freshly baked bread.

Directions: 1284 Kalani St Unit D106, Honolulu, HI 96817

19. Bishop Museum

The Bishop Museum showcases exhibits on Polynesian culture and natural history. This is our favorite museum in Hawaii. Our kids love the science center where they can go inside a volcano and get hands-on with science. I enjoy the Polynesian voyaging exhibits and then heading to Highway Inn Cafe for a Hawaii plate lunch.

things to do honolulu oahu bishop museum

The Hawaii Hall alone is worth checking out with three wood floors featuring Hawaiian history. It reminds me of the great museums in London.

Directions: 1525 Bernice St, Honolulu, HI 96817

20. Honolulu Helicopter Tours

While we don’t always recommend a helicopter tour in Hawaii due to the weather, the team at Honolulu Helicopter Tours has the best safety record on Oahu. They offer tours for different budgets too. From an 18-minute flight over Honolulu and Diamond Head to a 60-minute circle island tour, you should check them out to get above Honolulu for a fresh perspective.

Save 5% on all their tours with promo code HVG, learn more and book here: Honolulu Helicopter Tours .

21. Pearl Harbor National Memorial

Welcome to one of the most popular sites on Oahu ( this is the other one ). Pearl Harbor National Memorial brings thousands of visitors a day to pay their respects, learn about the air raid, and visit the historical sites.

Pearl Harbor is 25-minutes away from Waikiki so it isn’t in Honolulu but I’ll keep it simple for this list.

Directions: 1 Arizona Memorial Pl, Honolulu, HI 96818

Hop in an Uber, Taxi, Lyft, or drive yourself to the visitor center. But, before you arrive make sure you make a reservation for t he USS Arizona. Reservations can be tough to get, especially during the busy holiday season and summer.

things to do honolulu hawaii pearl harbor

You can skip the hassle of driving and getting a reservation by booking a guided Pearl Harbor and Historic Honolulu City Tour with our favorite local tour group. They will pick you up and drop you off at your hotel.

Bags are not allowed in the Pearl Harbor National Memorial. Also, make sure to hop on the free shuttle to take you to Ford Island. Home of the Battleship Missouri Memorial and the Pearl Harbor Aviation Museum .

If this is your home base, Honolulu has more… way more to offer! Check out our full list of things to do in Honolulu .

Things to Do on Oahu: Ko Olina and Waianae

We lived in Ko Olina, on the leeward side of Oahu, for a couple of years. Ko Olina is at the start of Waianae, the West Side of Oahu.

Waianae is a residential area of Oahu. Therefore, it is not a place visitors go often and we support that. But, there are some places of note and tours to explore.

22. Ko Olina Lagoons at Ko Olina Resorts

Ko Olina Resorts are known as the home of Aulani, a Disney Resort and Spa, but Ko Olina is better known to us for the lagoons. One of the 10 best beaches on Oahu is the Ko Olina lagoons.

things to do oahu hawaii ko olina lagoons disney resort

We love these lagoons for the calm waters for our kids, proximity to the resort restaurants for lunch and snacks, and the big, empty beaches.

The lagoons are man-made. Blasted from the volcanic rock as part of the Ko Olina Resorts development, the lagoons are open to the public and ready for your vacation. Arrive before 9:00 AM for a free, public parking spot. See our Oahu itinerary for details.

Stay in Ko Olina (see our Ultimate Ko Olina Guide ) or stay in Waikiki, you can hop over to this dry and sunny side of the island for amazing beaches.

While you are over here, book a tour with our favorite Oahu snorkel tour to see dolphins and sea turtles. Or stay till sunset for their Ko Olina Sunset Sail .

things to do oahu hawaii ko olina lagoons

23. Electric Beach for Snorkeling

Electric Beach made our #1 spot for the best snorkeling on Oahu . The beach’s namesake is due to being located in front of a large power plant (Hawaii Electric or HECO). The snorkel spot is abundant in fish as the fish congregate around the hot water discharge from the power plant.

This snorkel spot is only for advanced swimmers and snorkelers. It is risky because you have to swim out over 100 yards to the snorkel spot, it is in water that is over 30 feet deep, there can be currents or rough surf, and there are no lifeguards on duty. It is not an easy snorkel spot so swim with a buddy and understand the ocean conditions.

You will be greeted by a lot of fish making for beautiful snorkeling.

Directions: 92-301 Farrington Hwy, Kapolei, HI 96707

I park at Kahe Point Beach Park. Car break-ins are common in this parking lot so don’t leave valuables or anything in the car.

things to do oahu waianae electric beach

24. Maili Pillbox (Pink Pillbox) Hike

Pillbox hikes are very popular on Oahu. These are bunkers from the military defenses built to protect the island before and during WWII. We share the history of many of them in this video: All of Oahu’s Pillbox Hikes Explained (plus the history): 5 Honolulu Pillbox Hikes .

Most of Oahu’s great hikes are located on the windward and east side of Oahu so this one is special. Located on top of Pu’u O Hulu, you can hike the 45-minutes to the pink pillbox, up a steep trail. Beautiful, sweeping views of the Waianae coast will reward you. It is hot and sunny on this part of the island so bring water and sun protection.

Directions: Pink Pillbox Trail, Waianae, HI 96792

things to do west oahu pillbox hike

25. Oahu’s Best Whale Watching

The best locations for whale watching on Oahu are on the North Shore and Waianae. Waianae is my favorite as you can expect better weather and calmer seas during whale seasons. The annual humpback whale migration to Hawaii is from December through March,

While Maui is our favorite island for whale watching , Oahu has some excellent viewing also.

Our favorite whale-watching tour leaves from Waianae Small Boat Harbor. Head out on a power raft for up-close encounters with majestic humpback whales. We like this tour for the fast rafts increase your chances of seeing them (they don’t chase but cover more ground) and their staff of marine biologists that are full of knowledge. Learn more and book here – Waianae Whale Watching .

Directions: Waianae Small Boat Harbor at 85-491 Farrington Hwy, Waianae, HI 96792

26. Dolphin and Snorkeling Tour

If you can’t make it to Oahu during whale season then a dolphin excursion is your best option. Located at Waianae Small Boat Harbor, the team from Dolphin Excursions Hawaii will take you out to see Hawaiian Spinner Dolphins, Hawaiian Green Sea Turtles, and to epic snorkel spots on the Waianae Coast.

Things to Do on Oahu: North Shore

Time to leave Honolulu and the resorts to get out into the countryside of Oahu. Honolulu is considered town and the North Shore is considered country. Hence, Oahu-founded surfboard company called Town & Country.

Our favorite area to visit on Oahu is North Shore. Make sure you leave one or two days in your itinerary to see everything. We sure do in our Oahu Wayfinder Itinerary !

Finally, time to head to North Shore Oahu. The home of Jack Johnson, big wave surfing competitions, waterfall hikes, and the best food trucks on the island. North Shore is also home to 10 Free Things to Do on North Shore Oahu and the Ehukai Pillbox Hike . If you still haven’t had your fill, we have another 21 Amazing Things to Do on Oahu’s North Shore .

27. Haleiwa Town

Haleiwa Town is the unofficial home base for the North Shore. We love this town for the food trucks, shave ice, and coffee shops. The art galleries and kayak and SUP in the river are also worth checking out.

Directions: Haleiwa, Oahu

Leave Waikiki in the morning so you can stop in Haleiwa for coffee at Haleiwa Cafe, Coffee Gallery, or Island Vintage Coffee (a chain but they have Kona coffee and good food). Then continue up the coast to do the things below. Come back to Haleiwa for lunch or dinner at a shrimp truck or food truck.

Stop at Kaimana Shave Ice and say, “ The Hawaii Vacation Guide brought you here .” You will save 10% on the freshest shave ice in Haleiwa. See our full list of coupon codes here .

28. North Shore Food Trucks

Did I mention the food on the North Shore? Giovanni’s was the original shrimp truck serving up spicy and buttery shrimp from their signature-covered truck in Kahuku, North Shore.

Check out one of the many shrimp and food truck parks in Haleiwa. You can’t miss them off the main road. Kaimana Shave Ice is located near a large food truck park, so you get two birds with one parking spot.

You will also find more trucks in Pupukea near Waimea Bay (across from Shark’s Cove) and in Kahuku, at the northern tip of Oahu.

29. Waimea Bay for a Beach Day

Waimea Bay is hard to miss as you drive up the North Shore on Kamehameha Highway. The road turns to present the beautiful bay with the bell tower in the background.

Waimea Bay is probably the best beach on the North Shore. The bay has two drawbacks. Parking is limited in the public parking lot and along the road. Waimea Valley and the church charge for parking which I’ve found very helpful. The other drawback is the bay is calm from May to September but should be avoided during the winter. Big waves and strong currents make it a dangerous place to swim.

Pack a lunch and enjoy a day of swimming and relaxing on the beach at Waimea Bay. You will find lifeguards on duty, showers, and restroom facilities.

Directions: Waimea Bay Beach, North Shore, HI 96712

things to do north shore oahu waimea bay beach

30. Waterfall Swim

If you’re looking for a waterfall swim on Oahu, this is the place to go. With many waterfalls being on private land, hard to reach, or dangerous, the 40-foot Waimea Valley waterfall is the place to go.

Waimea Valley is a botanical garden and Hawaiian cultural immersion area. You can spend half a day here at the arts and crafts booths, walking the valley’s gardens, exploring the Hawaiian villages, and swimming in the waterfall. This is a perfect spot for strollers and kids. It is also home to one of the best luaus in Hawaii .

Reserve your Full Day General Admission to Waimea Valley ticket here. This is a direct booking with Waimea Valley!

Directions: 59-864 Kamehameha Hwy, Haleiwa, HI 96712

oahu best things to do waimea valley waterfall swim.jpg

31. Shark’s Cove Snorkeling

Shark’s Cove made our list of the best snorkeling on Oahu . From May to September, the waves settle down for some epic snorkeling in the lava rock-protected lagoon.

Lifeguards are on duty and there are restroom and shower facilities. A snorkel rental shop is across the street along with food trucks for lunch.

We like Shark’s Cove for the clear water and the protected lagoon. Make sure the conditions are good for snorkeling before you go out by talking to the lifeguard and checking lifeguard flags. Grab our favorite reef-safe, mineral-based sunscreens before you head into the water.

Directions: Shark’s Cove at Pupukea Beach Park, Oahu

32. Romy’s Kahuku Shrimp Hut

As we continue up the North Shore, it may be time to stop for fresh shrimp. Just past Turtle Bay Resort are Fumi’s Kahuku Shrimp and Romy’s Kahuku Prawns and Shrimp Hut. These two serve up fresh shrimp from their shrimp ponds directly behind their huts.

Romy’s is our favorite as we describe in the video below. Stop for a garlic butter shrimp plate before you move on down the road.

Directions: 56781 Kamehameha Hwy, Kahuku, HI 96731

North Shore Oahu is full of fruit stands and food trucks. You won’t be hungry as you spend the day up here.

33. Polynesian Cultural Center Lu’au

For many visitors to Oahu, this is the must-see thing to do on Oahu. Pearl Harbor National Memorial and the Polynesian Cultural Center attract more visitors than any other sites on Oahu.

Located near the northern tip of the Oahu in La’ie, the Polynesian Cultural Center is known for its luau dinner but we like it for the Islands of Polynesia. Walk past the luau area and into six island nations of Polynesia. Learn about the culture, games, songs, and stories of Samoa, Tonga, Hawaii, Aotearoa, Tahiti, and Fuji. Check out our full Polynesian Cultural Center review .

polynesian cultural center thing to do oahu hawaii

We recommend you arrive when they open at 12:30 to spend the afternoon there and then go to the Ali’i Luau or Gateway Buffet . Stay late for the HA: Breath of Life Show. Book below and save up to 20% on their luau packages as it is a direct booking link with the Polynesian Cultural Center.

If you’re on Oahu frantically searching for things to do or you are starting your Hawaii vacation planning, then check out our Oahu Wayfinder Itinerary .

Things to Do on Oahu: Windward

As we drive over the northern tip of Oahu, past Kahuku and La’ie, we enter windward Oahu. On the windward side, you will be greeted with lush rainforest and towering cliffs of the Ko’olau Range, the remnants of one of Oahu’s two distinct volcanoes.

After North Shore, windward Oahu is my favorite part of the island to visit.

34. Kualoa Ranch Tours

When we lived on Oahu, the Polynesian Cultural Center and Kualoa Ranch felt too touristy to be worth my time. I regret that decision because they offer such great tours. They are both good places to learn the history of the islands.

Kualoa Ranch is known as the Jurassic Valley as Jurassic Park and Lost World movies were filmed in part here, plus dozens of other movies. The ranch is a working cattle ranch and farm full of wonderful employees who like to share their stories.

Visitors to Hawaii make the drive to Kualoa Ranch for the popular tours below, but they have so many more to offer.

  • Kualoa Ranch ATV tours
  • Kualoa Ranch Zipline
  • Malama Aina Tour
  • Explore all Kuoloa Ranch Tours here

Directions: 49-560 Kamehameha Hwy, Kaneohe, HI 96744

35. Kaneohe Sandbar

This place has become very popular in the past few years. Kaneohe Sandbar or Ahu O Laka in Hawaiian is a ridge of sand in Kaneohe Bay that becomes a beach island during low tide.

The water is turquoise, the sand is white, the bay is calm, and sea turtle sightings are common.

things to do oahu hawaii kaneoha sandbar.jpg

Accessing the sandbar is limited. You can kayak by renting a kayak in Kailua or go out on a boat tour. As the sandbar can be tough to reach in a kayak, we recommend going on a boat tour. Boat tours include lunch, snacks, sunscreen, snorkel gear, and other comforts for a day out on the water.

Our favorite Kaneohe Sandbar tour leaves directly from the small boat harbor near the sandbar. Learn more about the best Kaneohe Sandbar boat tour .

Directions: 46-499 Kamehameha Hwy, Kaneohe, HI 96744

36. Lanikai Beach

Another one of our top 10 Oahu beaches is Lanikai Beach located in Kailua. Lanikai is known for its long, white sand beach with outrigger canoes parked on it from the local canoe club, and the views of the Mokulua Islands.

We find ourselves at Lanikai Beach every time we visit Oahu. We recommend arriving early as there are no public parking lots, only street parking. Respect the neighbors by not blocking driveways or making a lot of noise. Spend the day at Lanikai or go on a kayak adventure.

Directions: Lanikai Beach, Kailua, HI 96734

things to do oahu hawaii lanikai beach

37. Kayak to the Mokes

Kayaking to the Mokulua Islands or the Mokes was our favorite activity to do with friends who visited us on Oahu.

Rent kayaks from the local shop, wheel them to Kailua Beach (another great beach) and make the short kayak trip out to the islands.

You can rent kayaks and go yourself or you can go on a guided tour. If you’re not a confident kayaker then we recommend the guided tour. Click below to learn more.

  • Self-Guided Kayak Discovery
  • 2-Hour Guided Kayak + Beach Time

38. Waimanalo Beach Park

Welcome to the best walking beach on Oahu. At over 3-miles long with gorgeous views of the mountains and ocean, this white sand beach is worth a trip to the East Side of Oahu.

Waimanalo Beach Park has abundant public parking, showers, restrooms, and a lifeguard on duty. The currents can get strong during the winter months so check with the lifeguard before heading out.

We show you how to fit Waimanalo Beach and everything worth visiting in East Oahu in our Oahu Wayfinder Itinerary .

Directions: 41-741 Kalanianaʻole Hwy, Waimānalo, HI 96795

39. Makapu’u Beach & Lighthouse

Located on the far eastern tip of Oahu, Makapuu Beach and Lighthouse make for a nice morning out with the family.

Makapuu Point Lighthouse Trail is a paved walking path that takes you up to the top of the point, with views of Makapuu Beach, Manana Island Seabird Sanctuary, and coastal views of Oahu.

If you have time, head down to Makapuu Beach. It is a tucked-in beach that is nice for relaxing. It is known for bodysurfing so be careful of the surf break.

Directions: Makapuʻu Point Lighthouse Trail, Waimanalo, HI 96795

40. Koko Head Crater Hike

Let’s finish strong with a hike to the top of a volcanic cinder cone.

  • Length: 1.8 miles
  • Parking: Large parking lot at the bottom of the hill
  • Avoid hiking for sunrise as no parking is available

This is more of a moderate hike, not because the terrain is challenging (there’s no hill to slide down or rocks to climb over) but because the hike is steep. This hike is a workout as you ascend up over 1,000 steps to reach the top.

While it is a workout, it’s also a fun trail with some pretty amazing views. The steps that you take up to the top are old railroad tracks, which adds to the fun (you’re not just taking stairs up to the top).

Oahu is the best Hawaiian Island for hiking in our opinion. Explore all of Oahu’s easiest hikes and moderate to advanced hikes .

Waikiki alternatives: Where to avoid the crowds at O'ahu's beaches

Avoid the masses in favor of these less-crowded beaches..

Maria Kanai

With their turquoise water and sparkling white sand, O’ahu’s beaches are some of the most beautiful in the world—but they can also get packed with tourists. Even if popular Waikiki Beach is right around the corner from your hotel, it’s worth seeking out the island’s less-crowded stretches of sand for a more relaxing experience.

Below, we’ve rounded up eight of the best beaches on O’ahu that are away from major hotels to help you discover somewhere new and make your vacation extra memorable.

Near Kailua

Lanikai Beach, Hawaii

Lanikai Beach

One of the most pristine beaches on O’ahu , Lanikai is known for its fine sand and quiet, shallow waters that are ideal for swimming. It’s only accessible via pathways between homes, however, and there’s a $200 penalty for parking in the neighborhood. Instead, find a legal spot in downtown Kailua and make the 20-minute walk to the beach or plan to get dropped off by a rideshare service. Remember, if you see any turtles, keep your distance—they’re endangered and it’s against the law to touch them. There isn’t a lifeguard on duty here, so keep an eye on any younger swimmers.

Close to Lanikai Beach, Kailua boasts clear water, soft sand, and mountain views in the distance. One of the largest and most beautiful beaches on O’ahu’s west coast, it’s a great spot for water sports like kayaking, bodyboarding, kite surfing, and stand-up paddleboarding. Spend some time in the ocean, then take to the volleyball courts, barbecue pits, or picnic tables. There are three separate parking lots nearby but there’s usually a wait for a spot, so get there early or consider taking a rideshare service or the public bus .

Near Haleiwa

Waimea Bay, Oahu, Hawaii

Waimea Bay sits along O’ahu’s North Shore, where some of the world’s most famous surfers gather to compete on the massive waves in the winter season. Come summer, however, the water is much calmer, making the bay perfect for swimming, snorkeling, and diving. Arrive early to score parking, then spend the day lounging on the gorgeous white sand. Also on site are picnic tables, restrooms, showers, and lifeguards.

Sunset Beach

Sunset Beach, Oahu, Hawaii

Another North Shore beach popular with surfers is Sunset Beach . Waves can reach up to 30 feet high in the winter months. Like at Waimea Bay, things settle down in the summer, and you can spend hours swimming and snorkeling in the placid water. True to its name, Sunset Beach is also an excellent spot to watch the sun go down over the ocean. There’s free parking across the street and next to the beach park, plus picnic tables, restrooms, showers, and lifeguards.

Near Kahuku

Kawela Bay, Kahuku, Hawaii

Although Kawela Bay is near the North Shore’s popular Turtle Bay Resort , it’s actually quite secluded and serene. You can park at the resort’s public beach stalls and walk to the bay, or drive via Kamehameha Highway and park across from the farm stands selling corn, bananas, and coconuts, where a trail opening nearby leads straight to the beach. Once there, you’ll find a crescent of brilliant sand with gentle waves that are just right for swimming, kayaking, or frolicking in the water.

Near Hawaii Kai

Hanauma bay.

Located within a marine life conservation area on the southeastern coast of O’ahu, Hanauma Bay is renowned for its snorkeling. Naturally formed within a volcanic cone, the bay is now home to a diverse ecosystem, including more than 400 species of fish, green turtles, and an abundance of coral. To access the bay, you’ll need to make a reservation , pay a $25 fee per person (kids under 12 are free), and watch a nine-minute orientation video upon arrival. You’ll also need to get there on your own, as the bay recently stopped allowing tour buses to combat overtourism. Note: Hanauma Bay is closed on Mondays and Tuesdays.

Waimanalo Beach

Located on the east side of O’ahu, Waimanalo Beach may be far from most major hotels and resorts, but it’s worth the trip for the azure waters, miles of soft white sand, and views of Rabbit Island off the coast. The chill waves invite swimming, snorkeling, and bodyboarding, and you’re likely to have them mostly to yourself if you visit during the week. Parking is usually easy to find, but pack food and drinks as there aren’t any restaurants or concessions near the sand.

Kahala Beach

A small sail boat floats on the crystal blue waters of Kahala Beach in Hawaii

While Kahala Beach is a local favorite, it’s still much less crowded than Waikiki. Honolulu families flock here for the calm, kid-friendly water as well as the picturesque setting amid coconut trees (it’s a popular spot for wedding and graduation photo shoots). There’s also a covered picnic area as well as bathrooms and outdoor showers. The parking lot is limited, but there are some spots along the street. Note: The shore can be rocky, so consider bringing water shoes for swimming.

How to spend the ultimate weekend on Oʻahu, Hawaii

Make the most of a short visit to O'ahu, Hawaii, with this itinerary © Pgiam / Getty Images

There’s a reason why Oʻahu is nicknamed the Gathering Place – it’s the Hawaiian island that has everything.

Here you'll enjoy buzzy restaurants, golden beaches , luxe resorts, historic sites, walkable neighborhoods, trendy boutiques and hiking trails with breathtaking panoramic views.

Born and raised on the island, Oʻahu is more than just my home. It’s where I surfed my first wave, where I fell in love with hiking, where I always want to come back to after traveling elsewhere. It combines the excitement of city life with the laid-back island vibe of sunny beaches, verdant mountains and mai tais by the pool.

A long weekend may not be enough – but it’s a start. First, here are some quick tips to help you plan:

  • When to arrive: Arriving on a Thursday morning is perfect. That way you’ll have a full day to rest and unwind before an extended 3-day weekend.
  • How to get from the airport: It's best to rent a car at the airport. You’ll need one to explore the entire island (the  public bus system is great, with stops all over Oʻahu, but it’s faster to get around in a rental car). Rideshare is available, too; the average cost from the airport to Waikiki (about 9 miles) is $30.
  • Getting around: The city bus has routes all over the island, with stops at the most popular visitor attractions on Oʻahu. The Waikiki Trolley offers limited routes, the farthest to Sea Life Park, about 15 miles from Waikiki. The  city’s only bikeshare program is available in urban Honolulu . To see all of Oʻahu, though, you’ll need a rental car.
  • Where to stay: Of all the islands, Oʻahu has the most diverse range of accommodations, from budget-friendly  Hotel Renew in Waikiki to the luxe  Four Seasons Resort Oʻahu in Ko ʻOlina on the island’s west side. It’s the only island with a  Disney-themed hotel , complete with water slides and character-filled breakfast experiences.
  • What to pack: Bring casual beachwear, something warm just in case, shoes you can walk and hike in, something dressy for dinner, swimwear, flip flops (we call them slippers) and reef-safe sunscreen.

Want to spend time on the beach? Here's our guide to the best in Hawaii

Surf boards lined up on a palm-lined beach

Morning: Assuming you’re staying in Waikiki, wake up and head out early. Grab a bullet coffee or acai bowl at Sunrise Shack , a cute North Shore-based cafe started by surfers with a location in the Outrigger Waikiki Beach Resort . If you’re looking for a casual breakfast, head to Heavenly Island Lifestyle Waikiki ; this laid-back spot has a variety of brunch dishes, from sweet bread French toast with local honey and fruits to a spicy tomato shakshuka. Morning is the best time to walk along Waikiki Beach and watch surfers nab early waves.

How to spend the day: Waikiki is the birthplace of surfing – and it also happens to be the best place on the island to learn the sport. Book with locally owned Waikīkī Beach Services for a 75-minute lesson in the friendly waves where Native Hawaiian Olympians Duke Kahanamoku and Carissa Moore both grew up surfing. Or jump in an outrigger canoe – an important part of Hawaiʻi’s rich culture – to catch waves. This is the only place on the island where you can experience outrigger canoe surfing.

My go-to, post-surf lunch spot is Rainbow Drive-In on Kapahulu Ave. This local favorite, around for more than 60 years, serves hearty plate lunches and slush floats, which I highly recommend. For something lighter, get an ahi poke (cubed raw fish) bowl from nearby  ʻOno Seafood . Try the boiled peanuts – it’s a local specialty.

Dinner: Sip on handcrafted cocktails at sunset at Hau Tree , the oceanfront restaurant at the revamped Kaimana Beach Hotel. Share a bunch of small plates or splurge on the housemade pasta or fresh fish entrées. If you want to get out of Waikiki, Chinatown – about 4 miles west – boasts some of the island’s best restaurants, including Fête Hawaiʻi , a hip bistro with great cocktails and dishes inspired by French, Italian, Korean and Hawaiʻi flavors. In 2022, chef-owner Robynne Maii was the first female chef from Hawaii to win the prestigious James Beard Award, the state’s first in nearly 20 years. I’m obsessed with the Chaz burger, local-style carbonara and the Rocky Road to Hana ice cream. Reservations are required.

After dark: Oʻahu is the only Hawaiian island with a robust nightlife, and Waikiki is a great spot to find live music. Located in the Outrigger Waikīkī Beach Resort, Blue Note Hawaii is an intimate venue – just 326 seats with a full-service restaurant and bar – that hosts a range of musical and comedy talents, from LeeAnn Rimes to Rob Schneider. Halekūlani’s House Without a Key offers traditional hula and live Hawaiian music until 10pm.

Two sea turtles resting on a sandy beach on a sunny day

Morning: Get an early start with a 30-mile drive to the North Shore along the Kamehameha Highway (that means heading east toward Kahuku.) The drive is part of the experience. This two-lane highway hugs the coastline, passing through rural towns, past roadside farm stands and stretches of empty beaches. Stop for a Spam musubi (block of rice with a slice of fried Spam on top, wrapped with a strip of nori) and butter mochi at the family-run Kaya’s Store in Hauʻula or a slice of chocolate- haupia (coconut) pie at Ted’s Bakery near Sunset Beach.

How to spend the day: If you’re on Oʻahu during the winter months, you’ll likely witness the spectacle surrounding the seasonal big waves. Beaches are packed with surfers and spectators, eager to catch the winter’s monster surf. During other times of the year, though, this stretch of coastline is quieter, the beaches less crowded. Laniakea Beach is a popular stop to see honu , or Hawaiian green sea turtles, basking on the beach (you have to stay at least 10ft away from them on land and in water). Or grab a snorkel – you can rent one from a surf shop – and hit Shark’s Cove, with natural rocky outcroppings that protect tide pools home to more than 70 fish species (this is a summer activity, as ocean conditions are calm). Feast on garlicky shrimp scampi from Giovanni’s Shrimp Truck or head to the roadside cafe at the family-run Kahuku Farms for a smoothie, slice of farm pizza or acai bowl, the ingredients of which are grown on-site.

Dinner: There’s nothing better than eating outdoors — except eating farm-to-table dishes crafted by James Beard Award-winning local chef Roy Yamaguchi. His restaurant, Roy’s Beach House at the recently updated Turtle Bay Resort , offers stunning ocean views and a menu that includes inventive sushi rolls, seafood and his signature molten chocolate cake. If you’re here on a Wednesday, the hotel’s Paniolo Lūʻau is worth checking out.

Like to walk? Here's our guide to the top hiking routes in Hawaii

A seaside settlement surrounded by green hills

Morning: Catch the sunrise at the top of the Kaʻiwa Ridge Trail, better known as the Lanikai Pillbox Trail. It’s a 1-mile, mostly uphill trek to two concrete pillboxes built in early 1943. I park at Kailua Beach and walk to the trailhead, which is tucked away in a residential neighborhood. There’s no better view of the famous Nā Mokulua (“twin islands”) off Lanikai Beach. Then head to Over Easy , a casual family-run eatery that serves crispy-edged pancakes, Cinnamon Toast Crunch-crusted French Toast and (my favorite) potato ‘n‘ eggs.

How to spend the day: I regularly walk Kailua Beach , which stretches for 2.5 miles with views of Popoiʻa Island (aka Flat Island) and the Mokulua Islands. Enjoy a nice stroll or just sit and watch the action: kiteboarders, canoe paddlers, swimmers, folks walking their dogs. Stop at Kalapawai Market for a quick snack, sandwich or fish taco. This coastal town is very walkable, with cute boutiques, hip coffee shops and trendy restaurants all nearby. Treat yourself to shave ice at Island Snow Hawaiʻi ; the shop (which Hawaiʻi-born President Barack Obama frequents) boasts all-natural syrups in island flavors like lilikoʻi (passion fruit), guava, Kona coffee and dragon fruit. Then wander through the aisles of Bookends , a beloved new and used bookshop, where you can find beach (or airplane) reads for under $5.

If you must now end your Oʻahu vacation, make the 30-minute drive from Kailua to the airport. If not, explore the rest of this beach town, to see what else Oʻahu has to offer. And trust me, there’s a lot more.

Welcome to the Fort DeRussy Beach Park!

Without a doubt my favorite beach in Waikiki, the Fort DeRussy Beach Park offers slightly less crowded ocean access than Kapiolani and Kuhio Park Beach, as well as volleyball, tennis, and pickleball courts, ample greenspace for frisbee, catch, flying kites, etc., as well as picknick tables and walking paths! Founded on a historic military fort (hence its name), the park also consists of Battery Randalph, which houses the U.S. Army Museum of Hawaii (open Tuesday – Saturday, 10am-5pm, free admission).

Whether sunbathing, swimming, kicking back with a pina colada, or generally just enjoying the beach, this location provides excellent views of the ocean, Diamond Head, and other beachgoers. I recall specifically a man with his dog named “Roxy” would always play frisbee here around 3:00 or 4:00pm (at least on Saturdays!) There is also a surfboard and kayak rental on sight which puts out complimentary beach lounge chairs during the daylight hours!

What to Consider When Looking for a Hotel for Your Oahu Vacation

If you’re planning to travel to Oahu on vacation, the first things you will likely look for are hotel prices.

Hawaii itself is such a popular destination that hotels and vacation homes are everywhere. This means you will have to figure out what you want in a place before you book.

You may want to consider the size of the room itself and features such as kitchens or refrigerators. And you will absolutely want to consider the location and convenience of the sights you wish to see.

But, above all, you will want to focus on the price of these accommodations, especially if you are traveling on a fixed budget.

In this article, we will discuss several hotel options for every price range so you can  plan the Hawaii vacation  of your dreams, without breaking your budget.

You will see all the best places to stay in Oahu on a budget, including the cheapest places to stay in Honolulu and some of the best places to stay in Oahu for families who have a bigger budget for a luxury hotel or resort.

Average Nightly Price in Oahu

The average nightly price of hotels in Oahu will vary by your choice of stay, which could be between under 150 dollars a night to well over 300 dollars a night. It just depends on your personal budget.

Among these costs are also costs of activities and food on the island, which are another big factor in the cost of a vacation. So your trip’s nightly price will vary by your choice of stay and your choice of activities.

Many options, such as the beach and parks, may not charge for anything except parking.

However, luxurious spas, scuba options, and other outdoor activity rentals will cost more.

Be sure to check out this guide on  105 tips for Hawaii on a budget to help you plan a trip that is full of fun, sun, and leftover cash.

Which Side of Oahu has the Best Beaches?

The  North Shore  and the South Shore contain the most popular beaches in Oahu for tourist locations,  surfing , and city life.

The West and East shore beaches are also  beautiful  but may not have as many swells for surfing and reefs for sightseeing.

Usually, the best area to stay in Oahu is closest to the beach you want to visit.

Amenities You Can’t Live Without

When planning on booking your place, it is up to you to make a list of amenities you know you will need.

For example, if you don’t want to order takeout every night, you may want a space to grill. Or you might want to have a microwave to  cook a quick meal .

If you go in the heat of summer, you may find that air conditioning is an essential amenity for you. And you may want to have access to a concierge, taxi service, or shuttle.

Many of the Honolulu cheap stays won’t offer these amenities, so be sure to consider if it’s worth it for a little extra cost to have more amenities for your family vacation to the Hawaiian islands.

Book a Family Photo Shoot

Whenever we travel to Hawaii, we almost always book a family photo shoot with Flytographer. They are super easy, affordable, AND it guarantees that I’ll be in some photos. You can get $25 off if you book through this link or use the code HAWAIITRAVEL.

Where to Stay Oahu FAQs

For hotels right on Waikiki Beach (instead of several blocks away), my top picks are the  Royal Hawaiian Hotel  and the  Hilton Hawaiian Village . There’s also the  Alohilani Hotel  which is just across the street from Waikiki Beach.

My top picks for Honolulu family resorts include the  Hilton Hawaiian Village ,  Hyatt Regency Waikiki Beach , and the  Kahala Res ort . These all have amazing pool areas, on-site dining and shopping, and fun kid’s activities for the whole family.

Honolulu has some really cool boutique hotels like the  Surfjack   Hotel ,  Queen Kapiolani   Hotel , the  Alohilani Hotel , and the  Royal Hawaiian Hotel . Each of these hotels in Honolulu offers unique amenities that will take your trip to the next level. Plus, they are some of the best affordable hotels Honolulu has to offer!

Oahu is a great island to visit for your first trip to Hawaii. There are plenty of great tourist attractions, like the Polynesian Cultural Center, Diamond Head Crater, the famous Waikiki Beach, and many more. Plus, there are so many Oahu places to stay for all budgets too!

There are so many incredible places to stay on Oahu, Hawaii, but some of the nicest include Ko Olina, North Shore, and in Waikiki. The North Shore is one of the best places to stay in Oahu not Waikiki, that offers Turtle Bay and a few other spots. Ko Olina is not one of the cheap places to stay Oahu offers and has many luxury resorts to choose from. Some of the cheapest hotels in Honolulu, Hawaii are in Waikiki too!
