It's been almost two years since the Hella Mega Tour was initially announced , and on Saturday night (July 24), Weezer , Fall Out Boy and Green Day finally embarked on their epic stadium tour.

After The Interrupters warmed up the crowd at Dallas, Texas' Globe Life Field, Rivers Cuomo and company were the first to take the stage. They had plenty of new material to play, but also gifted fans with some of their biggest hits like "Undone — The Sweater Song," "Say It Ain't So," and of course their cover of Toto 's "Africa."

Fall Out Boy was next in line, and their 15-song setlist was packed with anthems like "Sugar, We’re Goin Down," "Light Em Up" and "Saturday." They also played "A Little Less Sixteen Candles, A Little More 'Touch Me'” live for the first time since 2016.

Green Day ended the night with a career-spanning set that included everything from "Longview" to "Pollyanna," as well as a cover of Kiss 's classic "Rock and Roll All Nite."

Green Day, Weezer Return to Touring With First ‘Hella Mega’ Show

Green Day , Weezer and Fall Out Boy launched their long awaited Hella Mega tour with a performance in Dallas on Saturday (July 24).

“Take a look around you,” Green Day frontman Billie Joe Armstrong proclaimed just two songs into their set. “This is human contact. We cannot be locked up anymore. We need to be together.”

Nearly 18 months had passed since the tour was originally announced in September 2019. The trek was initially supposed to begin in Paris on June 13, 2020, but -- like the majority of touring -- those plans were postponed due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Rescheduled Hella Mega tour dates were announced in May. Just nights before the trek’s official launch, Green Day played a surprise club show in Tulsa, Okla.

A medley of classic rock tracks -- including the Ramones ' “Blitzkrieg Bop,” Joan Jett 's "I Love Rock 'n' Roll" and Queen 's "We Will Rock You" -- welcomed Green Day to the stage for their Dallas set. From there, the headliners immediately worked the 35,000 person crowd into a frenzy, starting their performance with monster hits “American Idiot” and “Holiday.”

Further highlights included the band’s iconic tracks “Longview,” “Welcome to Paradise” and “When I Come Around,” as well as a cover of Kiss ’ “Rock and Roll All Nite.” Surprisingly, the punk icons eschewed any material from their 2020 LP Father of All Motherfuckers , instead focussing on their deeper catalog of tunes. The evening closed with Green Day’s poignant classic, “Good Riddance (Time of Your Life).”

Earlier in the night, Weezer delivered their own rousing set, featuring such beloved tunes as “Hash Pipe,” “Beverly Hills,” “Island in the Sun,” “Say It Ain’t So” and “Buddy Holly.” The band also included their cover of Toto ’s “Africa,” which became a surprise hit for Weezer in 2018.

Green Day, Weezer, Fall Out Boy Launch ‘Hella Mega’ With Epic, Emotional Dallas Concert

By Andy Greene

Andy Greene

Just two songs into Green Day ’s headlining set at the Hella Mega tour launch at Arlington, Texas’s Globe Life Field, Billie Joe Armstrong asked for the houselights to be turned on so he could see the roughly 35,000 people in the audience. This was quite possibly the largest rock audience that had assembled anywhere in the world since the start of the pandemic, and he wanted to bask in their glow.

“Take a look around you,” he said. “This is human contact. We cannot be locked up anymore. We need to be together.”

It was a sentiment shared by every performer throughout the five-and-a-half hour concert, which also featured the Interrupters, Weezer , and Fall Out Boy , and it was almost enough to make you forget that the Delta variant is causing infection spikes all over America, mask mandates are returning, and the future is suddenly feeling very uncertain again. But the youthful crowd seemed unbothered by this, and masks were worn by no more than one out of every 300 people.

Covid issues aside, the show was wildly entertaining and well worth the nearly two-year wait fans have had to endure since the initial tour announcement . Like a 2005 iPod set to shuffle, it veered from “Sugar, We’re Goin Down” to “Beverly Hills” to “Wake Me Up When September Ends,” and since none of the artists have been on the road since in over a year and a half, they all had energy of racehorses freed from their starting gates.

After a quick opening set by the L.A. ska punk band the Interrupters, who won over the crowd with their unique take on Billie Eilish’s “Bad Guy,” Weezer came out. It was hard to recognize Rivers Cuomo for a moment because of his new mustache and mullet look, not to mention his studded leather jacket that shows he’s really embracing this whole Van Weezer era.

Editor’s picks

Every awful thing trump has promised to do in a second term, the 250 greatest guitarists of all time, the 500 greatest albums of all time, inside sammy davis jr.'s secret satanic past .

The early part of their set was heavy on new songs like “Hero,” “All The Good Ones” and “The End of the Game,” a bold move for a stadium show, but the opening notes of “My Name is Jonas” triggered a flood of classics like “Undone – The Sweater Song,” “Surf Wax America” and “Island In The Sun.” No matter how many times they’ve played them over the years, they always work.

“El Scorcho” generated some of the loudest cheers of the night thanks to the line about asking a girl out to a Green Day concert, and the inevitable “Africa” came not longer after it. Cuomo got a little confused when he got to the “I stopped an old man along the way” part and started just muttering “blah blah blah.” Perhaps the fact that Weezer’s biggest hit in years is a novelty cover of a 1982 Toto song has left him less than thrilled. The audience took over until the recovered on the chorus. After the live debut of “California Snow,” they ended with singalong renditions of “Say It Ain’t So” and “Buddy Holly.”

Fall Out Boy are the slight odd ones out on the bill since they weren’t graduates from the MTV class of 1994 like Weezer and Green Day, which Pete Wentz acknowledged midway through their set. “Imagine what a mind fuck this is for our band,” he said. “Our band is so influenced by these bands that to be on a stadium tour with them is absolutely mind-blowing. Dream big, you know what I mean?”

They certainly dreamed big with the stage show, which included more pyro than your typical Kiss concert, including flames that shot directly out of Wentz’s bass during their opening number of “The Phoenix.” And when Patrick Stump sat down at the piano to sing “Save Rock and Roll,” that burst into flames as well. There was also a video intro by actor Ron Livingstone that he delivered like Rod Serling of The Twilight Zone.

Their set featured just a single song from 2018’s Mania (“The Last of the The Real Ones”) and was instead a journey through their hits, including relatively recent ones like “Uma Thurman” and “Centuries” and vintage ones like “Dance, Dance” and “A Little Less Sixteen Candles, a Little More Touch Me.” The younger members of the crowd sang along to every word, while the older ones sipped their beers and looked on respectfully.

Fall Out Boy wasn’t a band that seemed built for the long run when they broke big with teens in 2005. And when they took an indefinite break in 2009, it was easy to imagine them going the way of Gym Class Heroes. But they had one of the most surprisingly successful second acts in rock history, and this tour could be the start of a third one since it is basically establishing them as a classic rock group. Who would have guessed?

By the time Green Day took the stage, the sun was down and the crowd was primed for the main event. An explosive “American Idiot” got things started, and they kept the intensity up by going right into “Holiday” and “Know Your Enemy.” Their album Father of All… hit just a little over a year ago, but they didn’t play a thing from it. It was instead classics like “Longview,” “Welcome to Paradise” and “Brain Stew,” and they caused the GA area near the stage to erupt into a giant mosh pit straight out of 1994. A large group of bros even ripped their shirts off and started slamming into each other and everyone near them, letting off 18 months of lockdown steam in a few crazed minutes of Dookie chaos.

Selections from American Idiot were sprinkled through the entire set, including an epic “Jesus of Suburbia” and a moving “Wake Me Up When September Ends.” These songs were written for the George W. Bush era, but they don’t seem like relics in any way. We’ve only grown more idiotic as a nation since W’s term ended, and these songs are now timeless anthems.

Near the end, they broke out “Still Breathing” from 2016’s under-appreciated Revolution Radio . It’s about finding meaning in life after difficult times, and it had a newfound resonance in the Covid era. “I’m like a soldier coming home for the first time,” Armstrong sang. “I dodged a bullet, and I walked across a landmine/Oh, I’m still alive.”

It was a joy to sing along with those words, and it was a joy to experience live rock and roll in a stadium after all this time. We don’t know what the next few months may hold, but at least for one glorious night, we were all still breathing, and still singing.

Hella Mega Tour

The Hella Mega Tour was a worldwide concert tour by the band Green Day , lasting from July 24, 2021 to July 2, 2022. The tour was also co-headlined by both Weezer and Fall Out Boy, who all three would play either their greatest hits or their newest work released around the tour's time. The purpose of the tour was to help show support for all of their newly released work, but for Green Day is called Father of All Motherfuckers , across 29 shows from two legs in North America and Europe.

  • 5.1 Rescheduled Legs
  • 5.2 Cancelled Oceania Leg
  • 5.3 Special Cases
  • 6 Reception
  • 7.1 Green Day
  • 7.2 Fall Out Boy
  • 7.4 Opening Act Artists

Background [ ]

All three bands would announce the tour along with new material on September 10, 2019. Green Day that day would release their single called Father of All... along with announcing their new album called Father of All Motherfuckers. The tour was originally supposed to start around the beginning of 2020, but various legs and shows were postponed or cancelled due to the COVID-19 pandemic. On February 28, 2020, Green Day announced a number of shows from the now cancelled Oceania leg to be post-poned, before later being cancelled. As the end of May of 2020 followed, all shows were either pushed back to 2021 or were cancelled due to the pandemic. The Hella Mega Tour would officially begin on August 24th, 2021, with a sold out show in Arlington, Texas.

The tour was also supported by only two opening acts by different artists during the tour's two legs, with the exception of KennyHoopla taking the place of The Interrupters during the Summerfest 2022 Milwaukee concert. Amyl and The Sniffers would be the opening act of every show during the European leg of the tour.

Set List [ ]

During the tour, Green Day played a total of 27 songs, with 18 being apart of the setlist during every show. An average would have around 20 preformed songs, featuring no encores and almost none being from their most recent work. The following is a complete list of fully-played songs during the tour.

Tour Dates [ ]

Promotional performances [ ], reshuffles & cancellations [ ].

The tour was originally supposed to take place from March 2020 to August 2020 when the tour was first announced. However, due to the growing COVID-19 pandemic at the time, all shows were rescheduled to the summer of 2021, with the European leg being pushed further back to 2022. The Oceania leg would later cancelled around the summer of 2020, along with one show in Finland and Canada.

Rescheduled Legs [ ]

Both the North America and European leg were supposed to take place during the summer of 2020, when both were initially post-poned to 2021 due to the COVID-19 pandemic. However, the Europe leg was then pushed further back to 2022 due to rising cases during the following year. During the schedule reshuffle, the Oceania leg would also be pushed back through to early 2021, before being ultimately cancelled. Out of the two remaining legs, only two concerts were cancelled due to the pandemic.

Cancelled Oceania Leg [ ]

The Oceania leg was made up of both concerts in Asia and Oceania, originally meant to kick off the tour starting in Singapore on March 8, 2020, before going through both current legs to end the tour at Auckland, New Zealand. However on February 28, 2020, all Asia tour dates were announced to be pushed back to early 2021. On July 15th, it was announced all Asia and Oceania tour dates would be cancelled and have their tickets refunded. Prior to the cancellation, the original tour dates for the Oceania leg were unchanged.

Special Cases [ ]

During the reshuffling of the European and North American tour legs, a show from Helsinki, Finland and one show from Toronto, Canada were ultimately cancelled due to the pandemic. During the first rescheduling, no shows from either leg were expected to be cancelled, but both concerts would not be considered for the second rescheduling.

Prior to the rescheduled European leg of the tour, Green Day would announce a solo concert in Moscow, Russia, originally expected to take place on May 24, 2020, before being pushed post-poned twice to May 29, 2022 due to the pandemic. However on February 27, the band would call off and cancel the concert due to the 2022 Russian invasion of Ukraine.

Reception [ ]

From the entirety of the Hella Mega Tour, the co-headlining band with Weezer and Fall Out Boy have estimated to gross well over $75 million between the three of them, with much of the profit coming from the North American leg alone, grossing over $65 million along with selling over 650,000 tickets. With the support for the new album, Green Day's Father of All Motherfuckers would sell over 240,000 copies both physically and digitally as of 2022. Despite the worldwide success of the tour, the album overall became the band's lowest selling work of their career. As for the singles releasing throughout the tour, they were widely received fairly decent from both fans and critics.

Green Day release KISS cover from Hella Mega

With a tight setlist comprising mainly their greatest hits on the North American leg of the Hella Mega tour, it was a bit of surprise that Green Day chose to fit in a cover of the KISS classic ‘Rock And Roll All Nite’ at each show. But the song became a bit of a party anthem each night that embodied everything the band had hoped for on a tour this grandiose.

Following up the recent release of a video for their single ‘Pollyanna’ with live footage from Hella Mega, the band has now released their KISS cover on streaming services along with a live performance music video that features some fun behind-the-scenes moments. In a statement, the band said “Even though the ‘Hella Mega Tour’ is over (for now), we want to keep partying every day, which is why we’re dropping our live version of ‘Rock And Roll All Nite’ right here, right now!!”

The new single is available now on streaming services and you can check out the music video below. While the American leg of the Hella Mega tour is over, the band still has two scheduled performances left this year – they’ll headline the Life Is Beautiful festival in Las Vegas on September 18th and perform at Global Citizen Live on September 25th.

After being postponed hella times due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the highly anticipated Hella Mega Tour has begun. The trek kicked off on Saturday July 24, two years after the tour's initial announcement, in Arlington, Texas. Green Day, Weezer, Fall Out Boy and special guests The Interrupters played to a sold out crowd of approximately 35,000 (mostly unmasked) fans. Billie Joe Armstrong commented on the crowd during the set stating:

“Take a look around you. This is human contact. We cannot be locked up anymore. We need to be together.”

Los Angeles ska punks The Interrupters opened the Texas show with an 8-song setlist. They performed a cover of Billie Eilish's "Bad Guy," as well as their popular singles "A Friend Like Me," "Take the Power Back" and their last song of the set "She's Kerosene."

Weezer hit the stage directly after, to Van Halen's "Jump," as the first headlining act of the night. They performed a 17-song setlist, with Rivers Cuomo sporting a freshly cut mullet and stache. The band covered Toto's "Africa" and live debuted a portion of "California Snow" from their 2019 self-titled album.
