It was a beautiful night of music. I love these string quartet concerts. So beautiful 🥰

Absolutely magical, beautiful surroundings, very talented musicians, only one complaint it didn't go on long enough!

It was amazing! Beautiful voice, beautiful instruments and an amazing show overall!

Loved the string ensemble and their interpretation of the music of Queen! Just beautiful!

Talented musicians, chill venue, unique concept. I'm excited to attend another and have already purchased tix.

Excellent. I haven’t had so much fun on a night in a long time! Thank you Fever for creating such wonderful events!

I enjoyed it very much. However, it will be nice to be able to select our own seats.

Amazing experience. Loved the set up, the music and the energy from all the staff working there.

What a beautiful performance by an incredible pianist in a peaceful setting. Highly recommend.

One reason I bought the tickets was for the ambiance and to hear talented musicians.

An incredibly atmospheric venue, beautifully lit by candles and the perfect accompaniment to the music

Superb concert series, entertaining and beautifully played, plus an amazing venue!

Inspiring! An amazing pianist contributing her heart and soul to inspiring songs by a fantastic group, Coldplay.

Hans Zimmer Is Touring Live Concerts of Dune, Interstellar, and Other Scores

The famous film composer is going on tour in North America with an 18-piece live band and orchestra, with tickets on sale March 22.

 • You can experience award-winning composer Hans Zimmer's iconic film scores in person when he takes his live tour across North America this Fall.
 • Zimmer, an 18-piece band, and a large orchestra will create new suites from the scores of his biggest films, such as Dune, Inception, The Pirates of the Caribbean, and The Dark Knight .
 • Can't attend in person? A 2022 recording of Hans Zimmer Live is available in a digital recording or epic four-vinyl box set.

Award-winning composer Hans Zimmer is getting a lot of praise right now thanks to his scores for both of the biggest films at the box office right now, Dune: Part II and Kung Fu Panda 4 . They follow hundreds of projects that have made him one of the greatest film composers of all time. He's the man behind The Lion King score (and its remake), The Pirate of the Caribbean movies, Christopher Nolan's films, Rain Man, Twister, Driving Miss Daisy, Thelma & Louise, The Thin Red Line, Gladiator, A League of Their Own, The Ring , and so much more. The combined box office gross from the films he's scored exceeds $28 billion.

And now cinephiles and music lovers can see him perform some of his most famous music. He is bringing the smash-hit world tour Hans Zimmer Live to North America this Fall with arena dates across the United States and Canada, including a birthday show at the iconic Madison Square Garden. With the support of his outstanding 18-piece live band and a full orchestra , Hans Zimmer Live kicks off in Duluth, GA at the Gas South Arena on September 6 and will visit 17 cities across the U.S. and Canada, concluding at the Rogers Arena in Vancouver, BC on October 6. You can watch the promo above.

In a groundbreaking audiovisual show, the multiple Academy Award and Grammy-winning Zimmer, his band, and the orchestra will perform a selection of the composer’s scores from some of cinema's biggest films. The newly arranged concert suites include music from Gladiator, Pirates of the Caribbean, The Dark Knight, Interstellar, The Lion King, The Last Samurai and Dune , for which Zimmer received his second Academy Award. You can find dates and get tickets at Hans Zimmer Live .

Hans ZImmer's Music Jumps Off the Screen

In a press release for the announcement, Hans Zimmer said, “I’m thrilled to return to perform in North America with my wonderful band and excited to share this phenomenal show." He continued:

“I love this feeling of uniting my family of extraordinary musicians with you, the audience. Just an unbelievable group of talents, who in my opinion, are some of the best musicians in the world. But nothing would have meaning without the good grace and support of you, the other part of the family – the audience. Ultimately, the music connects us all, and I promise you this: we will always play our best, straight from the heart.”

And if you can't attend the concert in person, there is a recording of Zimmer's live show available on digital and an epic four-vinyl box set . The Hans Zimmer Live recording features more than two hours of new reimagined arrangements of some of his most popular compositions. The album was recorded during the highly successful same-named concert tour in Europe in spring of 2022 for which Zimmer created new “suites” from some of his most recognizable themes and melodies with his 20 piece-band, “The Disruptive Collective,” along with the Odessa Orchestra & Friends and Choir.

Clara Kim stood in a sun-dappled room at Reuning & Son Violins in Brookline and picked up a Stradivarius violin. Tucking it under her chin, she whipped through a low chromatic scale before leaping up to play in the violin’s silvery upper range.

“Wow. Feels expensive,” Kim quipped as she set the instrument down.

It was the first time the violinist had ever played an instrument by the 17th century luthier Antonio Stradivari, widely considered the greatest maker of all time. Today, some of his violins fetch in the tens of millions of dollars.

Violinist Clara Kim plays a Giovanni Battista Guadagnini violin made in Turin in 1783, at Reuning & Son Violins, as she make her selection of a fine violin for A Far Cry's "Stradivari Serenade." (Robin Lubbock/WBUR)

Violinists Annie Rabbat and Zenas Hsu sat on a couch nearby, also at the shop to select rare instruments to play in a concert with Boston’s A Far Cry chamber orchestra. A nervous energy filled the air as they reverently handled the dozen violins displayed around the room, all by 17th and 18th century Italian makers like Giuseppe Guarneri and Nicolo Amati.

Rabbat found herself drawn to a violin by Carlo Bergonzi. As she played, the music became slower and more expressive. Rabbat let out a deep sigh as the final yearning note hung in the air.

“I feel like … if I lean in, it responds, if I lean away, it just continues to ring,” she said.

Three centuries ago in the Italian city of Cremona, the art of modern violin making was born. Today, the instruments made by the great luthiers of Cremona are considered the best in the world, like the Stradivarius owned by the celebrity violinist Joshua Bell.

Most musicians never get a chance to play instruments of this caliber or cost. But on Friday, March 29, the members of A Far Cry get to live out that dream onstage. Each of the ensemble’s 18 musicians will be playing a rare instrument on loan from Reuning & Son in a program called " Stradivari Serenade ." The orchestra will perform one of its signature pieces, Tchaikovsky's "Serenade for Strings," along with other works, and showcase the instruments in solo and small ensemble settings.

Sitting in his office, fresh off a flight from London, Reuning & Son president Christopher Reuning described the difference between the famed makers in the collection.

“Bergonzi makes an instrument that's a little darker, warmer sounding, a little huskier sounding, let's say, than Stradivari,” he said. “Amati can be an extremely elegant, beautiful sound. And the Guarneris, they're also perhaps a bit more husky, like the Bergonzi. But they all have this shimmery quality, which comes from these violins that are made in Cremona.”

Three violins, two Carlo Bergonzis and a Giovanni Battista Guadagnini, wait to be tried out by musicians from A Far Cry at Reuning & Son. (Robin Lubbock/WBUR)

It’s the second time A Far Cry has performed on instruments from Reuning’s collection. The idea evolved from “violin tastings” in which Reuning would present rare instruments to an audience and members of A Far Cry would play them.

Thinking it was a little farfetched, A Far Cry's executive director Grace Kennerly asked Reuning if it would be possible to supply the entire orchestra with instruments for a concert. He said, "Sure, why not?"

It didn’t take long to put together. In February of 2020, the orchestra performed Tchaikovsky’s “Serenade For Strings” from memory in New England Conservatory's Jordan Hall on rare instruments on loan from Reuning & Son.

“A lot of these instruments, over time, have become solo instruments,” Kennerly said. “But how often are you going to see a whole collection of those instruments all played at the same time?”

She recalled the first time she heard the orchestra play on Reuning’s instruments during a dress rehearsal for the original concert.

“They played the opening phrase of the first movement of the Tchaikovsky's ‘Serenade for Strings,’ and the foundation and depth of the bass, supporting, and then coming up through the violins, which were just spinning out into the hall, was insane,” Kennerly said. “The orchestra already has such a cohesive sound and to hear them like, turn the dial up to 11, not to make a ‘Spinal Tap’ reference, was just, I mean, my jaw dropped.”

Ken Cox, sales manager at Reuning & Son Violins, gently holds an Antonio Stradivari violin made around 1702. (Robin Lubbock/WBUR)

Reuning & Son is cagey about revealing the dollar value of individual instruments in its collection, but estimates the 18 instruments onstage will be worth a collective $100 million.

These instruments are more expensive than they’ve ever been, thanks to dwindling supply as pieces age, and increased demand in a rapidly inflating art and collectables market.

“They've been coveted by wealthy people and musicians and collectors, and the greatest artists have all strived to find a way to afford them," Reuning said. "It's a little sad, now that they've become so valuable, that it's really hard for a musician to buy one now.”

Violinist Zenas Hsu listens carefully to the Antonio Stradivari violin he's playing. (Robin Lubbock/WBUR)

All three musicians visiting the shop agreed the violins lived up to the hype – though it could be hard to put your finger on exactly why.

“There is a bit of a mystery, too, of, why do they sound so great?” Hsu said. “Is it the age? Is it the secrets of the makers?”

But, he added, at a certain point you had to let those questions go, “and just play it and realize how special the sound is without having a clear answer as to why.”

After trying out each violin on display, Hsu fell for the Strad. He sensed an eagerness in it, an ability to conjure new shades. It was as if he could only paint in primary colors before, and now a whole dazzling palette had opened up.

This segment aired on March 29, 2024.

Orchestra After 5 concert series is the latest happy hour in Philadelphia

By Ashley Harder

March 22, 2024 / 7:19 AM EDT / CBS Philadelphia

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) - Cocktails or mocktails, there's a new happy hour in town. Orchestra After 5 is presented by our very own Grammy-winning Philadelphia Orchestra. This mini, three-part series offers bite-size concerts that are excerpts of the concerts that upcoming weekend. They all include pre- and post-concert activities and crafted cocktails, and each event has a different theme.

It's yet another way the Philadelphia Orchestra is meeting the community where they are. Orchestra After 5 was created to invite people to experience the orchestra in a fun and relaxed way. They describe it as "classical concerts with a casual vibe." These concerts are hosted by Tristan Rais-Sherman, assistant conductor, but sharing his podium on these nights to take you through the concert as its host.

A couple of personal highlights were the multimedia elements during the performances as they help guide you through the compositions you are hearing as well as the very personal post-concert Q&A with some of the musicians. It allows you to connect on a different level and experience the human side of what makes the orchestra so dynamic.

Their first mini-concert incorporated a pre-performance event with tango dancing and classes and a post-concert Q&A featuring Concertmaster David Kim. On April 4, it's Haydn and Mozart Power Hour, and on May 2, Rachmaninoff's Keys of Fire! Expect musical genres jumping from classical to pop and pop to classical, painting activities and a scavenger hunt.

These 5 p.m. earlier runtimes and shorter 60-minute performances make it incredibly easy to attend after your workday and still make it home at a reasonable hour. Besides, who doesn't love trying something new?

All of the pre-concert elements are held in the Commonwealth Plaza. It's time to unwind and have some fun with The Philadelphia Orchestra! For tickets, dates and times, visit philorch.org/after5.

Jeff Lynne's ELO announce final tour: How to get tickets to Over and Out

live orchestra tour dates

Jeff Lynne’s ELO dazzled audiences with a show of sonic perfection when the band reappeared in the U.S. in 2018-2019.

Now, the melodic wizard and his ace musical comrades will hit the road a final time for The Over and Out Tour. A 27-date outing will commence Aug. 24 in Palm Desert, California and wrap Oct. 25 in Los Angeles. In between, Lynne and ELO will visit cities including Chicago, Atlanta, Seattle, Cleveland, Phoenix, Philadelphia, Houston and Washington, D.C.

An ELO presale begins at 10 a.m. local time March 20, with the general sale starting at 10 a.m. local time March 22. VIP experiences will also go on sale at 10 a.m. local time March 20. Tickets will be available via livenation.com and details about the VIP packages at jefflynneselo.com.

During the band’s last U.S. run , Lynne offered a 20-song setlist that included Electric Light Orchestra gems “Evil Woman,” “Don’t Bring Me Down,” “Telephone Line” and “Do Ya,” all reproduced with stunning clarity. Even the underappreciated and much-maligned “Xanadu” from the 1980 Olivia Newton-John movie received its due.

In addition to his prowess as a producer, Lynne was also a co-founder and member of The Traveling Wilburys with George Harrison, Bob Dylan, Roy Orbison and Tom Petty. The collective also received a nod in the live production with a comforting rendition of “Handle with Care.”

Lynne was inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame in 2023 and ELO ushered into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in 2017.
