The Ultimate New York Road Trip Itinerary

Ready to plan to best every New York road trip itinerary? Umm, hell yeah you are. Because contrary to popular belief, there is WAY more to New York than just NYC.

Sure, NYC is nice but you kind of owe it to yourself to enjoy EVERYTHING that New York state has to offer.

Because between rolling hills, iconic metropolises, awe-inspiring waterfalls, and lakes that stretch out as far as the eye can see. New York really does have it all. I pinkie promise.

But, if you’re not from New York, it can be difficult (aka stressful) to figure out exactly where to start when planning a trip to the Empire state.

And that’s where I – and my tried and true New York road trip itinerary – come into play. I mean, I want to use my 30+ years of experience of traveling in New York to make your life a whole heck (only pretend I didn’t say heck) of a lot easier.

This way, you can quickly and easily all of the best landmarks in New York.

So, if you’re ready to experience New York like a REAL New Yorker, then onwards my friend as we swan dive into this New York road trip itinerary.

Trust me, it’s filled with TONS of insider tips and tricks to make your life 10,000 times easier. And yes, that is an exact number.

Traveling To New York

Thankfully, traveling to New York for your New York road trip itinerary is pretty dang easy.

After all, New York is home to no less than three major airports – JFK, Newark, and LaGuardia – that are all well connected both domestically and internationally.

Personally, I’d recommend flying into either JFK or LaGuardia since both are closer to NYC than Newark, which is actually in New Jersey.

From here, you can then spend a few days in NYC before starting your New York road trip itinerary.

Personally, I wouldn’t rent a car in NYC just because it can be super expensive.

Instead, I’d spend a few days in NYC, take the train/bus to the Catskills, and THEN rent a car upon arrival.

Now, to get to the Catskills – the first stop in this New York road trip itinerary – from NYC you have a couple of different options. You could:

Take the Train  – Take NJ Transit’s mainline or the Bergen County line from Penn Station and then transfer to Metro-North’s Port Jervis line to Otisville. Once at Otisville, you can use a rideshare service to take you to the nearest car rental service.

Take the Bus  – This option is a bit more straightforward. Basically, all you’d need to do is hop on an Adirondack-Pine Hills Trailways/Greyhound bus and take it to the Catskills. Yeah, it really is that easy since they depart from the Port Authority bus terminal in Mid-Town. Once there, you could again use a rideshare service to take you to the nearest car rental service.

Pro Tip:  I’d go by bus. It’s easier, only takes about 2.5 hours, and will only cost between $45 and $65 per person. You’ll also get dropped off at the Catskill Park and Ride which is in Catskill, NY, near exit 21 of the New York Thruway.

How to Get Around New York

There is no reason why you should EVER drive in New York City. No really, that is not an exaggeration.

Not only are parking spots hard to come by – with insane, totally different, super complicated parking laws are found on every street block – but traffic is awful and if you park in a garage, well, you’ll pay the equivalent of the GDP of a small(ish) country.

Translation? You’ll pay a lot. Like, $40+ an hour a lot.

So, yeah, never drive in NYC and ALWAYS take the subway. Or bus. But the subway is usually easier since there’s no traffic.

Once outside of NYC though, you’ll 110% need a car. Yeah, sorry but outside of NYC, New York’s public transportation system is notoriously terrible or non-existent.

In either case though, you’ll need a car any time you travel outside of NYC.

So, if you want to start in the Catskills like this New York road trip itinerary suggests, I’d take the bus from Port Authority to the Catskills and then rent a car upon arrival.

Car rental services in Catskill, NY are basically Hertz. Conversely, you could always do a rideshare to Kingston and check out Enterprise, Budget Car Rental, or Sensible Car Rental while you’re there.

Best Time to See Fall Foliage in New York

Honestly, most people typically plan a New York road trip itinerary for the autumn since this is when vibrant foliage typically takes over the New York region.

So, if you’re lookin’ to do a wee bit of leaf peepin’, then consider planning your New York road trip for sometime in October.

Typically, fall foliage is JUST starting to come out in late September and then really takes over the region in October.

And depending on where you are in the state, fall foliage typically peaks in early October in the Adirondacks and around mid-October in the Catskills, which is much further South.

Below you’ll find two different totally amazing New York road trip itineraries that have ten amazing places in total.

Obviously, this is just a suggested NY road trip itinerary and it will vary based on your interests and how much time you have to spend in New York.

So, use this post as a rough guide and to help you plan one of many perfect road trips from NYC for you!

New York Road Trip Itinerary #1 – Headin’ Up North

First stop: the Catskills! And I truly love this region since everyone takes something different away from this vast area of natural beauty.

Will you go get lost in the woods? Or head up to the lake to catch fish for supper? Perhaps you’ll attempt to climb one of the many mountains in Catskills? The possibilities are endless!

Things To Do In The Catskills

Explore Catskill Park  – There are two lakes for water sports, over 120 miles of mountain bike trails, and 8 major hiking routes , including climbs up 5 of the 10 highest peaks in the Catskill Mountains. So, there’s plenty to do for anyone looking to get physical during their New York road trip itinerary!

Take in the view at Kaaterskill Falls  – See this beautiful natural marvel in its full glory, as water drops down over 260 feet at the highest waterfall in New York State! This gorgeous site has captured the hearts and minds of painters and poets for hundreds of years. It also happens to be one of the best waterfalls in New York  State!

What To Eat In The Catskills:

Binnekill Tavern  – If fine dining is yo’ thang, head over to Margaretville and grab yourself some top-level dishes at the Binnekill Tavern. Re-opened in 2018 with a new highly acclaimed chef, this Catskills institution will make you want to come back again and again! I recommend the schnitzel – it’s a local specialty!

Gracie’s Luncheonette  – If you feel the need to chow down on some good ol’ comfort food, but with a southern twist, look no further than Gracie’s Luncheonette in Leeds.

Feel-good food is the top priority here, with all-day breakfasts, fry baskets, hamburgers, and sandwiches aplenty. You might have to roll me on over to the next stop after a meal here!

Where To Stay In The Catskills: 

Mountain Treasure Bed & Breakfast  (Maplecrest)  – The scenery alone makes this place a pleasure to stay in! Add in spacious rooms, cozy furniture, cute fire pits, and an adorable gazebo, and you could convince me that  Mountain Treasure  might have been plucked straight out of a fairytale!

Antique Rose Inn  (Windham)  – With interiors like this, you’ll find it hard to head outdoors.  The Antique Rose Inn  also offers wood-paneled walls, provides personally tailored breakfasts, and has beautiful gardens surrounding Victorian-style architecture.

There’s also a wrap-around terrace that is perfect for sitting and watching the evening sunset with a cup of warm cocoa – or a cool beer, depending on when you stay

New York Road Trip Stop 2: Albany

Time to head further up the highway! Because believe it or not, Albany has a rich history, and it shows in every part of the city.

From the nightlife to the wineries and breweries, to the live performances, to the county fairs, there’s something for everyone who comes to visit. If you are one of those people who love the great outdoors, you can even chase waterfalls near Albany!

Head to the State Capitol  – Trust me – you can’t miss it! This five-story, hugely ornate building took over thirty years to build. But it looks like it was worth it!

And as the focal point of the Empire State Plaza in Capitol Park, the building is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Also be sure to take a tour so that you can explore to the vast interior too!

Albany Institute of History and Art  – Put those thinking caps on, y’all! This is one of the oldest museums in the US, and has over 20,000 different pieces on display, including paintings, sculptures, historical artifacts, and more!

What To Eat In Albany:

Sam’s Italian American  – This family-owned Albany mainstay has been serving customers for four generations. So, if you want to get your Italian pasta fix, Sam’s is the place for you.

The portions are huge, the menu is long, and by the end of your meal, you’ll feel like you just had dinner at your favorite Italian grandma’s house!

Cheesecake Machismo  – Need to satisfy that sweet tooth? Then head over to this epic place on Hamilton Street. it’s a quirky bakery that will ensure that you remember your New York road trip itinerary for years to come! Cherry Amaretto, Bavarian creme, green tea with chocolate…

Whatever you decide on, buy it by the slice or pick up a whole cheesecake for the road!

Where To Stay In Albany

New York Road Trip Stop 3: Saratoga Springs

I mean, hiking, fishing, swimming, spa treatments (of course), museums, and even golf are just some of the things you can do here. The hikes in Saratoga Springs are mind blowing! There are also tons of food venues so you won’t go hungry either.

Ride the historic carousel in Congress Park  – Take a blast from the entertainment past with this 120-year-old wooden merry-go-round! The original hand-carved animals are still in place, and will take you back to the good ol’ days as you bop up and down in style!

Some say it’s also one of the  most haunted hotels in New York , but don’t let things that go bump in the night spoil your stay!

New York Road Trip Stop 4: Lake George

It’s time for a tan! Or in my case, a mild change in my pasty white, white complexion! And the one place I like to pretend to tan is Million Dollar Beach.

But, this beautiful natural oasis is just one of the many things that attract road trippers to Lake George every year. And there’s no reason for you to miss out either.

Because this top NY road trip destination is more than just a big body of water – there’s historical forts, rail bikes, a huge amusement park, need I say more?

Things To Do In Lake George

Take an authentic steamboat cruise on Lake George  – Get out on that water, yo! After all, this town is named after the lake for a reason, and you should definitely head onto one of their local steamboats – especially the Minne Ha Ha Paddlewheel! – to enjoy one of the oldest pastimes in the USA.

House of Frankenstein Wax Museum  – Wax figures? Check. Movie monsters? Double-check. The ultimate creepiness collection? Check check and CHECK! If you’re after some scares during your ultimate New York road trip itinerary, this house of horrors will definitely scratch that itch. Be warned: not all of the wax statues stay still ….

What to eat in Lake George

The Garrison Restaurant and Bar  – For great food and great company, head to the Garrison, just around the corner from Million Dollar Beach. This all-American bar and grill boasts live music, patio seating, and a huge menu full of satisfying pub grub. Plus, there’s plenty of craft beers on tap!

The Boathouse Restaurant  – For the best in waterfront dining that Lake George has to offer, this former boathouse (who would have guessed?) provides high-stacked burgers, tasty steaks, the freshest seafood, and a whole host of other dishes that will kick your New York road trip up an extra notch!

Where To Stay In Lake George

Inn on the Hill  (Lake George)  – This place has everything you could want from a comfortable night’s stay, with modern furnishings and the added bonus of an outdoor pool.  Umm, hi. Sign me up, please! Plus, it’s just a stone’s throw from Lake George itself, meaning you can head straight out onto the water easily.

The Inn at Erlowest  (Lake George) –  I’ll admit it, this place comes with a hefty price tag. But when you want luxury, this is the place to measure it by. This beautiful stone building comes with HUGE rooms, some even with a fireplace or a jacuzzi, and excellent views of the lake, so your breakfast scenery will be second to none

New York Road Trip Stop 5: Lake Placid

It’s now on to our final stop of our first New York road trip itinerary – Lake Placid, a jewel among the Adirondack Mountains and home to one of the  best lakes in New York . .

If you’re venturing out on the ultimate road trip from NYC in the winter, this will be the perfect place to finish, because Lake Placid is a snow sports paradise!

But what if I’m on a NY road trip in summer? Oh well, I guess you’ll just have to settle for the natural beauty of sunlight pouring through green trees and shimmering off the cool, clear lake water. Sigh, it’s a hard life!

Things To Do In Lake Placid

Zip through the trees at Experience Outdoors  – What better way to view nature than by speeding over it at top speed? JK y’all, this isn’t you’re usual outdoor adventure! But just south of the main town of Lake Placid, make sure you stop by this family-friendly thrill ride.

Because in addition to epic zip lines, there’s also an adventure park full of challenging obstacles all set up in the Adirondack Mountain forests! You can see why this is one of the popular things to do in Lake Placid.

Shoot across Mirror Lake in a Toboggan  – Prepare for the longest slide of your life as you rocket down this 30-foot tall structure straight onto Mirror Lake! Although only available in winter, this is one of the most unique things to do in Lake Placid , with some sledders managing to slide over 1,000 feet across the ice!

What To Eat In Lake Placid:

Delta Blue  – Classic Lake Placid decor meets sumptuous Southern cuisine in this wood-paneled establishment complete with tree branches lining the ceiling. On the right day, you can even catch a live blues night while you enjoy your barbecue ribs!

Mis Amigos  – Sometimes you just want a burrito, amirite? Or, tacos, nachos, enchiladas, and the ocassional chimichanga. Well,  Mis Amigos deffo has got what you want with dishes that are bursting with flavor! If the weather is good, make sure to get a seat by the fire pit outside on the patio so that you can embrace Lake Placid’s sweet, small-town ambiance.

Where To Stay In Lake Placid:

Maple Leaf Inn  (Lake Placid)  –  Maple Leaf Inn  sits between Mirror Lake and Paradox Bay, within easy walking distance of both lakes. This quaint budget option will have you ready and refreshed for the day’s activities, and is perfectly positioned for anyone wanting to head up to Whiteface Mountain!

Cobble Mountain Lodge  (Lake Placid)  – When you think “mountain lodge”, this is what will appear in your head. Warm and comfortable rooms, with wooden furnishings and wood-paneled walls, this place just screams cozy!

New York Road Trip Stop 6: Montreal

If you’ve driven this far north, why not go a little bit further and add another country to the mix? I mean Canada is just right across the border and Montreal looks so tempting right? Montreal is one of those places that I have been to more times than I can count because it is such a beautiful city and it is so accessible. Probably why I’m a bit biased when it comes to visiting it.

Explore The Gorgeous Sandy Beaches – Montreal has some great beaches where you can enjoy the sand and the sun. If you are visiting in summer that is. If it’s winter, you can still enjoy the sand but it would be a bit too cold to enjoy the water. Nevertheless, it still a great spot to come to enjoy the view!

Go For A Hike – Montreal is a haven for anyone who loves the outdoors. There are amazing park trails for people at all levels of hiking experience and endurance. It is a great way to unwind.

Some of the popular parks are Parc Jean-Drapeau, Mount Royal, Lachine Canal and Champ des Possibles. These parks are just one of those benefits for the lucky ones living in Canada.

What To Eat In Montreal

Foiegwa – Head to Foiegwa for one of the best brunches in Montreal . This elegant diner was actually crafted out of an abandoned space. It is currently known for its gourmet regional cuisine and yes as I mentioned its brunch!

If you visit Foiegwa make sure to try out the waffles and the chicken. Doesn’t sound gourmet? Trust me, you will be surprised!

La Cave A Manger – You may have left NYC way behind but Montreal can offer you one of the most iconic dishes from your fav city. Try the Lafayette Supreme croissant at La Cave A Manger. This is a cream filled delicacy with multiple circular croissant layers. Have I convinced you yet? You seriously have to try it because it will have you craving for more than just one!

Where To Stay In Montreal

Best Western Plus Hotel – The Best Western is a popular hotel chain and with good reason. The hotel has modern rooms which are clean and pretty large. It comes with all the amenities that you could need for a night out in the town. Plus it is very conveniently located in the downtown area.

Hotel Bonaventure Montreal – This is another pretty great hotel to stay at and it has some raving reviews. Not only is Hotel Bonaventure in the heart of the downtown activity, it even has a fitness center that guests can use for free. The 2.5 acres of manicured gardens is also a big draw, as is the rooftop pool and terrace.

Bonus Stop For The Winter Lovers: White face mountain

Whiteface mountain is so close to Lake Placid that you don’t really need to have two bases to visit it. The location however does beg to be mentioned especially if it’s winter but it really doesn’t matter which time of the year you head there. There is always something to do. If you don’t want to be ultra adventurous, there are so many options where you can just kick back and enjoy the view!

Did I mention that there quite a few cool romantic winter getaways here too?

Things To Do In White Face Mountain:

Skiing:  Did you know that the White face mountain is one of the highest in the country? During winter the slopes get coated white and it is a great spot to test your skills whether on a snowboard or on skis!

Hill falls gorge:  It is a privately owned nature park but everyone really raves about how there are trails and activities for all ages. Plus the views are spectacular and it is rather peaceful. Such a break from the noisy streets of the city, if you get what I mean!

Santa’s workshop:  A quirky theme park that has stood the test of ages! It is perfect for families with kids and a fun stop along the way. Don’t expect a huge amusement park with rides though. Here the kids can catch a bit of the Christmas magic and so can you. I know I loved it. Bonus points because I got to feed the reindeer which was so much fun!

Where To Stay In White Face Mountain

Hungry Trout Resort:  It is perfect if you want to stay close to the ski lifts and get as much out of the slopes as you can. 

Sara Placid Inn:  Located in Lake Placid, this a warm tranquil place to stay. It allows you to access the slopes and yet have the quite laid back life near the lake.

New York Road Trip Itinerary #2: Way Out West

New york road trip stop 1: ithaca.

It’s wine o’clock, baby! Because wine and craft beer are the names of the game in Ithaca. Just get me a bespoke beverage, y’all!

So, as you head west into the Finger Lakes region – aka the number 1 wine region in the USA (oh yeah!) – Ithaca will be your first port of call.

As you pass vineyards full of delicious grapes just waiting to be picked, keep an eye out for the many waterfalls you’ll be passing along the way.

With excellent wine and so much gorgeous scenery, this will be the perfect place to start the best New York road trip itinerary ever! Aside from wine, there are also loads of things to do in Ithaca that draw people here year after year.

Things To Do In Ithaca

Head to Taughannock Falls State Park  – The biggest and most impressive of Ithaca’s 150 waterfalls (OMG is there a place where water ISN’T falling around here?!), the Tuh-GA-nick Falls waterfall, as it’s known locally, is 215 feet tall. And the rest of the state park isn’t too shabby either! There are hiking trails , swimming in Cayuga Lake, camping grounds, playgrounds, picnic areas, and more.

Get your art on in Downtown Ithaca  – Walking around Downtown Ithaca is like walking around an art gallery, except that you’re outside on the streets! There are statues and murals everywhere, many by local artists. It’s easy to see why this place has a reputation for its artistic diversity! Heck, even the restaurants and the nightlife are unlike anything you’ll find anywhere else!

What To Eat In Ithaca

Moosewood  – Get yourself some all-natural cuisine at Moosewood Restaurant! Dishes here are made with whole grains, nuts, beans, and seeds, and mixed with the freshest vegetables and spices, for the most organic meal imaginable. You’ll probably feel healthier just by reading the menu!

Agava  – Over in east Ithaca, Agava offers the best in Southwest-inspired vegetarian and vegan cuisine with its amazing selection of farm-to-table style dishes. Just choose between traditional entrees or tapas-style small plates, making it great for groups of friends and families alike. Get sharing, yo!

Where To Stay In Ithaca:

William Henry Miller Inn  (Ithaca)  – This cozy bed and breakfast is right in the Downtown area of Ithaca, and treats guests to historic ambiance while also providing all the modern-day comforts you could want. And if you’re after handmade desserts before bed following a day of fun in the city, then this is the place for you!

Fairfield Inn & Suites by Marriott  (Ithaca ) – This hotel sits right by the Buttermilk Falls State Park, with Cayuga Lake just a 5-minute drive away. The rooms are also neat and spacious, with a pool and a fitness center on-site. That’s why, this is a great place to stop, drop and recharge.

New York Road Trip Stop 2: Watkins Glen

It’s time to jump from one Finger Lake to the next. Because Watkins Glen is less than an hour from Ithaca and sits on an entirely different – but totally picturesque – body of water that is known as Seneca Lake .

Therefore, it’s the perfect spot to go for a hike, cruise out on the lake, or sample some delicious wine from one of the many Seneca Lake vineyards that can be found in this quaint little New York town.

The Corning Museum of Glass also isn’t too far away if you fancy a little trip to one of the best museums in the region.

Things To Do In Watkins Glen

Hike the Gorge Trail  – This hour and a half long trail through Watkins Glen State Park is one of the  best hikes in upstate New York ! Start at the Sentry Bridge, walk around behind the Cavern Cascade waterfall, cross the suspension bridge, marvel at the Rainbow Falls plunge pools, and head onwards towards Jacob’s Ladder. It’s an awesome adventure!

Get your pick of the bunch at the Farmers Market  – Throughout the summer and fall seasons, you won’t find a better selection of fresh produce, meats, crafts, and toiletries than at the Watkins Glen Farmers Market in Lafayette Park. See the community of Watkins Glen at its best here, and grab yourself a bargain!

What To Eat In Watkins Glen:

Seneca Harbor Station  – Here you’ll find meals that’ll fill you up, all year round. During the summer, it’s seafood, steak, and sandwiches. But throughout the winter, the menu changes to hearty chowders that will keep you warm and happy on the inside for a long time!

Blue Pointe Grille  – If you’re after breakfast then the Blue Pointe Grille at the Harbor Hotel is an excellent choice. Order yourself a Finger Lakes omelet and follow it up with some pancakes and waffles. You might even want some oatmeal, yogurt, and perhaps even a muffin. Regardless of what you choose tough, the food here is guaranteed to leave you feeling ready to start your day!

Where To Stay In Watkins Glen

Budget Inn  (Watkins Glen)  – Cheap an’ cheerful, as they say in jolly old England! But don’t worry, the service is 100% American-style hospitality. The location is great too since this hotel sits in between the Six Nations Campground and the Catharine Creek Wildlife Management Area, which means that you’re downtown!

Lakeside Resort  (Watkins Glen) –  The Lakeside Resort  is exactly what it sounds like! So, enjoy 30 acres of walking trails, waterfalls, and garden areas, plus plenty of space for hanging out on the terrace and having a barbecue. You’ll be living the cabin life to the max here during your New York road trip itinerary!

New York Road Trip Stop 3: Rochester

Time to head north! And Rochester makes for an epic, intellectual stop on your New York road trip itinerary.

Especially since there are museums aplenty up here by Lake Ontario, covering everything from science to gamesto art, and even photography.

Plus, there’s the Seneca Park Zoo, which has been open and running for over 120 years!

Things To Do In Rochester

It’s game time at The Strong National Museum of Play  – What’s that? An entire museum dedicated to games, toys, and entertainment? Hold my beer! Because it’s not just kids that will enjoy this museum (although this place is totally family-friendly!).

I mean, there are over 30,000 consoles and games in the International Center for the History of Electronic Games, and it’s home to New York’s only indoor butterfly garden!

What To Eat In Rochester

Voula’s Greek Sweets  – Vegan and vegetarian Greek food never looked and tasted so good. And you don’t hear me saying that very often! Whether it’s brunch, lunch, dinner or just some pastries to go, everything here is delicious, and almost all of it is gluten-free or has the option of being gluten-free. Yup, go, go Greek food!

Nick Tahou Hots  – For something uniquely Rochester, head to Nick Tahou Hots and order yourself a “garbage plate”. This local dish, invented at Nick Tahou Hots, includes your choice of protein (steak, chicken, hamburger etc) served on top of a combination of home fries, baked beans, and macaroni salad, topped with a spicy meat sauce.

Where To Stay In Rochester:

Hampton Inn Rochester  (Irondequoit)  – This is a modern hotel features plenty of amenities like an indoor heated pool and gym, as well as a daily breakfast with plenty of tea and coffee. Yup, sure sounds good to me! The rooms are also nice and big and well maintained. Hip hip hooray!

School 31 Lofts  (Rochester)  – Right in the middle of the Neighbourhood of the Arts, this modern hotel comes with some impressive furnishings mixed in with some very artistic designs, which is appropriate! You can totally tell this used to be a school, but this is a much better use of the building if you ask me. I’ll take comfort over homework any day!

New York Road Trip Stop 4: Buffalo

Time to head further west to Buffalo, New York’s second-largest city.

As you can imagine, with great size comes a great amount of things to see and do! So, when you visit, expect to find nature preserves, botanical gardens, museums, a thriving nightlife scene, and plenty of activities down by the harbor.

Because it’s all happening here, at least if you embark on one of the best road trips from NYC!

Things to do in Buffalo

Buffalo and Erie County Botanical Gardens  – These amazingly beautiful gardens were designed by the same guy who developed Central Park back in New York, New York! Not only are they a visual spectacle to behold, but they also act as a center for research and education. They’re dual-purpose, y’all!

And the centerpiece of it all is a tri-domed conservatory that is made from wood, steel, and glass, which houses tropical plants and looks Insta-mazing at sunset!

Definitely take some time to go on the Garden Walk, which is known for being America’s largest garden tour. And if you want to be the first one through the door, they also offer an early access activity where you get to help feed the koi fish who live in the ponds here!

Explore Outer Harbor  – This quiet area is home to over 200 acres of green spaces, with plenty of bike paths and walking trails for you to enjoy. There are also plenty of places here where you can rent out kayaks and head onto the waters of Lake Erie. You even have the option of renting water bikes, so you can cycle across the lake. It’s fun and a bit surreal, all at the same time!

Plus, If you head north into Buffalo Lighthouse Park, you can see the towering figure of Buffalo Main Light right at the edge of the water.

What To Eat In Buffalo

Sinatra’s  – Time for some fine dining during your New York road trip itinerary! And this family-owned Buffalo institution fits the bill since they’ve been in operation for over forty years.

They also serve up some of the best Italian Old Country flavors with a bit of modern flair. Soups, salads and antipasti will lead into pasta and specialties like Osso Bucco. With a bottle of wine (or two – who’s counting?) to accompany the proceedings, you and your NY road trip friends will feel like royalty!

Black & Blue Steak and Crab  – Seafood, seafood, seafood, and – oh yeah – more seafood. After all, this is a harbor city, that is known for it’s fresh catch of the day and stunning scenery.

So, for the best seafood the city has to offer, head to Black & Blue for tasty oysters, red snapper, lobster, scallops, shrimp, and, of course, crab. There’s plenty of fish alternatives on offer too if seafood ain’t your jam, including all manor of steaks and sides to go with them!

New York Road Trip Stop 5: Niagara Falls

“It’s the end of the world and we know it”, and by world, I mean road. Because yes my friend, this is the final stop on our New York road trip itinerary!

And I dunno about you but I personally think it’s important to end with a big finish, and they don’t come much bigger than this!

Because Niagara Falls is famous for being home to one of the world’s most amazing and beautiful natural waterfalls. One of those things that makes you proud to be a New Yorker!

Fortunately, there’s way more to this corner of New York state than just impressive (VERY impressive!) water features.  But, I alos understand if you just want to spend most of your time at the falls.

Things To do In Niagara Falls

Uh … visit Niagara Falls?  – I mean, how are you not gonna see it? You have to, really, it’s SUPER famous! Although, you really do have to see Niagara Falls with your own eyes to appreciate the full power of its beauty. I have a whole Niagara falls itinerary that guarantees you make the best out of your trip!

First, head over to Niagara Falls State Park to begin your journey, and then head up to Prospect Point to take that all-important selfie. Gotta make those waterfalls more beautiful, amirite? Don’t forget to match those amazing pics with the right Niagara falls captions.

If you want, you can even take a ride aboard the Maid of the Mist to see the base of the Falls and refresh yourself in the cascading mists! Just make sure that you pack everything you need for Niagara falls .

What To Eat In Niagara Falls

Zaika Indian Cuisine & Bar  – For a vegetarian-friendly taste of India, this restaurant creates dishes taken from royal Indian menus dating back hundreds of years.

There are so many beautiful places in New York state to visit that I’m always perplexed as to why visitors rarely branch out beyond New York City and Niagara Falls to explore other destinations and attractions. The whole state of New York is an incredible natural landscape, with lush valleys, towering mountains, and unbelievably pristine lakes.

If you’re starting to think about taking a trip around New York State, I’m sure you’ll find that there are plenty of unique and wonderful places to add to your itinerary.

We’ve put together a 9-day New York State itinerary to help you explore the top landmarks and hidden gems on a once-in-a-lifetime road trip through New York.

How to Get Around

Really the only good way to get around New York is by car. If you are flying into New York, without your own car, you will need to rent a car at the airport. I suggest flying in and out of New York City’s airports because there are more connections.

But if you’re not coming from far, you might choose to skip New York City and start somewhere like Buffalo or Albany.

Seven Days in New York Itinerary

When preparing a perfect New York itinerary, you’ll want to consider the types of things you most want to see and do. Since there are so many different activities – from big city to rural backwoods – you’ll probably need to narrow it down a bit.

I think that 9 days is the ideal amount of time to see and explore the best bits of this glorious state. So our one week in New York itinerary will take you through the state’s lake, river, and mountain regions in what will likely feel like a whirlwind trip.

You can always remove any bits and pieces you aren’t keen on and add any that you feel are missing, to make it your own.

Day 1 & 2: New York City

Known as the “Big Apple”, New York City is perhaps one of the most famous cities in the world. It’s a melting pot for business, the arts, and luxury shopping. That’s why we recommend starting your itinerary in the city.

Not only will you likely be flying into one of New York City’s airports to start your trip, it’s a great place to rent a car , and it’s the most active part of the trip, which is always best done first.

Here are a few spots you should consider exploring while in New York City.

• Manhattan – Manhattan serves as the city’s primary central business district. There are many touristy things to do in Manhattan , including going to the eclectic Times Square, watching a show on Broadway, Ice Skating at Rockefeller Center, and seeing the towering Empire State Building.
• Central Park – This gorgeous green space is the largest urban park in New York with lots of things to do. The park has plenty of artificial lakes, meadows, and waterfalls, making it the perfect place for an afternoon picnic.
• Statue of Liberty – This massive neoclassical sculpture is one of the most famous landmarks in the world—a lasting symbol of freedom. Catch a ferry to Liberty Island and marvel at the 305 feet tall copper and steel monument.
• Brooklyn – This New York borough is a great place to wind down the first day of your 7 days in New York state itinerary. Apart from eating wholesome bagels and attending comedy and music events, you can visit the Brooklyn Museum to see their expansive collection of Egyptian and African art.
• Long Island – Enjoy some fun in the sun at Long Island’s famed beaches along the North Shore. This densely populated island is also where you’ll find North Fork wineries and get a chance to taste some of the best wines in the US.

Day 3: Hudson Valley

On day three of your New York itinerary, you’ll leave the hustle and bustle of New York City and head up to Hudson Valley. This forested region of the state boasts incredible vineyards, orchards, and farms.

It’s about a 2-hour drive, depending on traffic, from New York City to Hudson Valley.

Hudson Valley is every foodie’s dream. This region attracts many chefs who open and run farm-to-table eateries, thanks to the abundance of farmlands. You’ll also find the Stone Barns Center for Food and Agriculture, a non-profit farm and research facility.

Some things to add to your Hudson Valley to-do list include:

• Hudson Valley Farmers’ Market – Get the freshest, healthiest, and tastiest foods and local produce from over 30 vendors. You’ll also enjoy a great atmosphere filled with live music and outgoing locals.
• Hudson State Historic Park Walkway – A popular attraction among locals, this 1.28-mile walkway is the perfect spot to see the great Hudson River and the surrounding landscape. You’ll see people walking, cycling, or running here, and the best part – it’s absolutely free to enter all year round.
• Benmarl Winery – Go wine tasting at the oldest vineyard in America. This lush green estate in Marlboro overlooks the Hudson Valley. You can enjoy a fresh cheese platter while you sip your Marlboro Village Blush wine and gaze at the panoramic views.
• Minnewaska State Park Preserve – If you’re a nature lover, look no further than this 22,275-acre preserve. Here you can hike, bike, or simply stroll around and get in touch with nature.

Tip : If you want to experience the Hudson Valley from the water, join a Hudson River sightseeing cruise .

Day 4-5: The Catskill Mountains

Usher in the fourth day of your one week in New York state itinerary with a drive to the breathtaking Catskill Mountains. It’s about a 1-hour drive in good conditions to get there.

Simply known as the Catskills, this mountain range offers excellent hiking, walking, and biking trails. It also has an abundance of wildlife and ski resorts that you’ll fall in love with.

Some fun things you could add to your Catskills itinerary include:

• Take a Craft Beer Tour – The Catskills locals love to have a good time. Plan a craft beer tour and enjoy the best brews from top Catskills breweries. The Shrewd Fox Brewery uses all-natural and non-GMO ingredients sourced locally.
• Hike to Kaaterskill Falls – This adventure is ideal for all the camera-happy hikers. These falls are one of New York’s tallest cascades at 229 feet and the most famous. The trek is about a 1.6-mile round trip and varies in difficulty from easy to hard.

Day 5-6: The Adirondack Mountains

A week in New York may not be enough to explore all that the state has to offer. But one place you should definitely have on your list is the lush Adirondack Mountains. It’s about 3 hours 50 minutes to drive to Lake Placid from the Catskills.

Simply known as the Adirondacks, this chain of mountains has over 2,000 miles of hiking trails, more than 3,000 lakes and ponds, and about 1,200 miles of rivers.

Some things you could enjoy in the Adirondacks include:

• Lake Placid – This upstate New York destination is an alpine village and a lake. The quaint village boasts plenty of hiking trails and green rolling hills. This town is a famous Winter Olympics venue and a hub for snow sports like skiing and snowshoeing.
• Fort Ticonderoga – Learn some history at this 18th-century fort that serves as a strategic point during the American Revolutionary War .
• Whitewater Rafting – With so many rivers in the Adirondacks, going whitewater rafting is a can’t-miss. You can also opt for kayaking or river tubing.

Day 6-7: Thousand Islands

Tucked between the United States and Canadian border, the Thousand Islands archipelago boasts more than 1,800 islands dotted across the St. Lawrence River. This region is a water wonderland offering plenty of outdoor activities and waterparks.

The drive to Thousand Islands is about 2 hours 50 minutes.

You’ll also find plenty of mansions and castles like Singer Castle, featuring Gothic windows and secret passageways. Another beauty is the German-inspired Boldt Castle on Heart Island. There is no shortage of outdoor activities in the Thousand Islands. You can also go fishing, boating, and hiking.

Here are some more activities to consider when visiting Thousand Islands:

• Antique Boat Museum – See America’s leading nautical collection on the shores of the St. Lawrence River. The museum has a collection of more than 320 unique boats and thousands of artifacts and archives. It hosts the annual Antique Boat Show and the biennial Antique Raceboat Regatta, which take place in August and September, respectively. The museum is also closed for winter.
• Wellesley Island – This island has several state parks with sandy beaches, hiking trails, and all-season cottages for the perfect upstate New York vacation. You can enjoy outdoor activities like kayaking, cross-country skiing, and trophy fishing.

Day 8: Rochester

Located on Lake Ontario, Rochester is a city full of history and creativity. You’ll find plenty of museums, art galleries, and historical stops. The city’s proximity to the Finger Lakes makes it a popular New York state vacation destination. It’s about a 3-hour drive from the Thousand Islands area.

Thanks to the Genesee River, which runs straight through Rochester’s center, you’ll have access to waterfront parks and restaurants. Outdoor activities you may enjoy include hiking, fishing, boating, and swimming. In winter, tourists love skiing and snowboarding.

Thrill seekers will appreciate visiting the Seabreeze Amusement Park, a historic fun park.

Other Rochester activities you can do include:

• The Strong National Museum of Play – You’ll have access to the museum’s vast collection of toys and dolls. The museum’s highly interactive collection of toys teaches you about the history of play.
• Finger Lakes – Enjoy the region’s vast array of wineries dotted along its eleven long and narrow lakes. Popular wine varieties in the area include reds like Pinot Noir and Cabernet Franc. And white wines, such as Chardonnay and Pinot Gris.

Day 9: Niagara Falls

The final stop on your itinerary needs no introduction. Niagara Falls attracts over 30 million visitors a year, and for good reason. This 16.83 sqm natural wonder is part of the Niagara Falls State Park, which straddles Canada and the United States.

You’ll want to get views of the falls from numerous different vantage points . Everyone’s favorite is from the Maid of the Mist boat tour , where you’ll come upon the falls from below. You can also see the falls from the Observation Tower or Prospect Point Viewing Area at Niagara Falls State Park, or the viewing ledge at Terrapin Point on Goat Island.

Another thing we love to do in Niagara Falls is go wine tasting in Niagara on the Lake . The wineries are quite unique, with their own personality, making everything from fruit wine to Ice wine.

Be sure to see the views of Niagara Falls from all angles, explore the hiking trails around Lake Placid, go rock climbing at Shawangunk Ridge or white water rafting on the Hudson River.

The top 5 road trips in New York State

The beauty of New York State lies not just in its landmark attractions, but also in the places in between – the foliage-blanket hills of the Catskills , the serene stillness of the waters in the Finger Lakes and the silent strength of the peaks of the Adirondacks .

The following five road trip itineraries showcase some of the Empire State’s best sites – from museums and beaches to art parks and nature reserves. However, remember that here, the experience truly lies in the journey and the little gems you’ll witness outside your car window.

1. Long Island's gardens, museums and beaches

Best for family fun Old Westbury–Wantagh; 72 miles ; allow 1–2 days

Jutting out from the eastern coastline, 118 miles east of New York City , Long Island is a world away from the fast-paced state capital. It's filled with suburban delights, opulent mansions and beaches in every direction, which makes it an ideal road trip for kids of all ages. The “Are we there yet?”s will quickly turn into “Please, can we stop here too?”

Start at Old Westbury Gardens , an English-style country home from 1906 ringed by 200 acres of formal gardens, woods, ponds and lakes (check out their year-round program of activities for families and children).

Just down the road is Garden City’s Long Island Children’s Museum , with imaginative displays on everything from bubbles to mini-beasts. If your kids have their eyes on the skies, opt for the Cradle of Aviation Museum , with fascinating exhibits on early biplanes and spaceflight and a new statue honoring American astronaut, Sally Ride. 

From there, head to the Gatsby Gold Coast on the north side of the island to gawk at the oversized mansions, stopping at Centerport’s Vanderbilt estate to explore the shipping magnate's mansion and a fine museum and planetarium. Then head to the southern shore for some playtime at Wantagh’s Jones Beach State Park to frolic on 6.5 miles of white sand.

Detour : For an elongated route, stretch out the distance to the east end of Long Island. On the North Fork, visit the spectacular purple fields of Lavender by the Bay in East Marion or Calverton. You can also go for a spin on the century-old carousel in Greenport before heading out to Montauk to climb the iconic Montauk Point Lighthouse .

2. A Hudson Valley and Catskills romantic sampler

Best for couples New Windsor–Hudson; 141 miles ; allow 2–3 days

Immediately north of New York City , Mother Nature opens her arms to romantics at any time of year, emphasizing the cozy vibe of autumn, the snowy magic of winter, the floral beauty of spring and the verdant calm of summer in the Hudson Valley and Catskills. 

Kick off the getaway by walking hand-in-hand among the outdoor sculptures at Storm King Art Center , a 500-acre wonderland where art mingles with nature amidst meadows, forests and rolling hills. Then prove that your partner really can walk on water by taking a stroll over the Walkway Over the Hudson , the world’s largest pedestrian bridge, stretching for 1.28 miles between Poughkeepsie and Highland.

From here, get lost in the stunning splendor of the Mohonk Mountain House , whether that means enjoying a luxurious, all-inclusive stay or just buying a hiking day pass to explore 85 miles of surrounding trails, including the famous Labyrinth rock scramble and the narrow crevice known as the Lemon Squeeze. All along the trails are cute wooden gazebos that really up the romance factor. 

Keep heading north to Opus 40 , a mesmerizing 6.5-acre earthwork sculpture that will keep you both on your toes. Cap the day off by spending an evening at the charmingly cozy Shandaken Inn , warming up by its wood-burning fireplace or roasting marshmallows over the outdoor fire pit.

Finally, work your way back over the river to Hudson , an artsy enclave where you can meander downtown and explore the antique shops, hip coffee spots and innovative eateries lining the main streets.

Detour: Reserve a table for two at Pocantico Hills’ Blue Hill at Stone Barns , where the meal of the day (there are no menus) promises the finest of dining, with ingredients sourced right from its farm at the Stone Barns Center for Food and Agriculture. For more casual fare, opt for the Blue Hill Cafeteria at Stone Barns, a calm stop for lunch trays filled with small delicacies and community table dinners.

3. Finger Lakes Highlights

Best for relaxation Ithaca–Watkins Glen; 59 miles ; allow 1–2 days

The moment you set your eyes on any of the 11 long, narrow Finger Lakes is like a ginormous exhale. There’s something about the calm waters here that can’t be replicated; expect the stress of daily life to just magically melt away.

Using Ithaca as your starting line, head over to Buttermilk Falls State Park , where the meditative cascades tumbling down from Cayuga Lake will lure you into a state of zen. Hold onto that state of mind as you head over to the Cornell Botanic Gardens to experience its peaceful grounds, including a healing garden of medicinal plants and a literature-themed herb garden.

Trace the lakeside up to Interlaken, where you can sip at area wineries such as Hosmer Winery in Ovid or Shepherdess Cellars on the Cayuga Wine Trail. Top it off with a cool dessert from Cayuga Lake Creamery (Seneca salt caramel, anyone?).

Next, hop over to the bottom of Seneca Lake to Watkins Glen, where you can continue the R&R with a stroll through Watkins Glen State Park or maybe counter it all by revving up at the Watkins Glen International raceway with some high-speed NASCAR racing.

Detour: While the Finger Lakes region is peppered with storybook villages, Skaneateles raises the bar, poised right at the top of the 16-mile-long Skaneateles Lake. The bed and breakfasts here come with an extra dose of charm, and the restaurants come with a punctuated sense of flavor. The entire hamlet comes to life during the holidays for its famous " Dickens Christmas" – an event that looks like a page ripped out of a classic novel.  

4. Adirondacks Lake Hopping

Best for water lovers Lake George–Lake Champlain; 160 miles ; allow 3–5 days

Majestic and wild, the Adirondacks mountain range – famous for the 46 high peaks that tower above 3820ft – rivals any of the nation's wilderness areas for sheer awe-inspiring beauty. Around 9375 sq miles of protected parklands and forest preserves sprawl from central New York State to the Canadian border, taking in towns, mountains, glacial lakes, rivers and more than 2000 miles of hiking trails . 

While the area is named after the peaks, the lakes make waves in their own way and guide the way for an idyllic road trip. Start in Lake George , where thrills by day (such as the roller coasters at Six Flags Great Escape ) are balanced with chill time at night (at dozens of waterfront restaurants, many of which are known for their craft beverages).

Alternatively, you can simply blend in with the locals and stroll around Lake George Village. Then drive over to Tupper Lake, where the natural world comes into full view at the Wild Center outdoor museum and the astronomy-focused Adirondacks Sky Center .

Next, it’s time to chase those Olympic dreams at Lake Placid, the setting for the 1932 and 1980 Winter Games. Visit the Lake Placid Olympic Museum and Olympic Jumping Complex , where you can take a gondola and elevator up to the 128m ski jump. Finally, end your journey at Lake Champlain to step back into American history at Fort Ticonderoga and Crown Point Historic Site . 

Detour: Between Tupper Lake and Lake Placid, stop off at Saranac Lake, a lesser-known stop that sees fewer tourists. Connect with the outdoors by hiking, biking, kayaking, birding or golfing, or get to know the area’s history as a tuberculosis cure center at the Saranac Laboratory Museum . 

5. Great Lakes Seaway Trail

Best for a weeklong trip Ripley–Rooseveltown; 428 miles; allow one week

While the total length of the Great Lakes Seaway Trail covers 512 miles (including a small portion in Pennsylvania ), the New York section starts just across the border in Ripley and traces Lake Erie and Lake Ontario before ending at the St Lawrence River in Rooseveltown.

The first Chautauqua/Niagara section arguably has some of the most headline attractions, including Buffalo and Niagara Falls , Lake Erie State Park and the Thirty Mile Point Lighthouse , so it’s well worth taking several days to properly see the highlights. 

Next are two Lake Ontario sections. The western section includes the state’s fourth largest city, Rochester, as well as the Charlotte-Genesee and Sodus Point Lighthouses. The trail’s eastern section is rooted in the waterfront town of Oswego, known for its summer Harborfest (July), and Sackets Harbor , a village that’s a designated New York State Heritage Area.

As the lakes flow out into the river, the road travels up through Alexandria Bay – worth a stop to hop on Uncle Sam’s Boat Tours to experience the Thousand Islands and the once-abandoned Boldt Castle from 1900. Also, make time for the 2636-acre Wellesley Island State Park with its swimming beach. Just before reaching the finish, enjoy some downtime at Coles Creek State Park, where you can camp right along the St Lawrence. 

Detour: Venture off the byway for a stopover in Syracuse, home to the picturesque Syracuse University , with the postcard-perfect Hall of Languages and the Harry Potter -like Crouse Hall. While in town, visit the Erie Canal Museum and dine at Pastabilities , where you’re sure to walk out with a jar of their addictive Spicy Hot Tomato Oil .

Visiting New York is worthwhile at any time of year, but I personally like the warm months best. Summer in New York can be very hot and humid. So, for many, the best times to visit New York is April and June, and September and October.

Spending Christmas in New York or enjoying the pre-Christmas season in New York City is also a wonderful experience.  The ice rinks are open, the city is beautifully decorated, and, if it snows, the dream vacation at wintertime is perfect!

Paying in New York

Best Way to Travel in New York

Finding your way around New York is quite easy, even if it doesn’t look like it at first. The streets’ checkerboard pattern makes finding your way around easy. These are the best ways to get around New York:

Metro / Subway: If you have longer distances ahead of you, then the Subway is your friend, because here you can travel really cheap. It’s easy to use! The MetroCard is available at every Subway station. You can buy single rides or the popular MetroCard for 7 days; that way you can travel for a week in New York at a fixed price. Taxi:  In New York, you can choose between the Yellow Cab and Uber. You can check out our tips and all the information you need to know in our following blog:  Taxi in New York City .

By bike: With many of the New York sightseeing passes (you can find out more about this budget tip in my New York Pass comparison ), the bike rental is included. We ourselves really love using New York’s Citi Bikes. This city bike program has over 1,000 stations throughout New York City, and it’s super-cheap. We’ll show you how it works in the Citi Bike New York article.

On Foot: You’ll be surprised how much walking you’ll do in New York. After all, there’s something to see on every corner. So be sure to bring comfortable shoes!

Which neighborhood is best for you depends on several things: your interests, how close you want to be to the attractions and what your travel budget is. In the image below, I’ve drawn you my favorite neighborhoods of New York including the main attractions nearby.

Where Should you Stay in New York?

Manhattan – it doesn’t get more central than this: Manhattan is the most famous borough of them all. Plus, it contains 95% of all the attractions New York is known for. Everything is within easy reach, and you are right in the middle of it all. On the other hand, the hotels are a bit more expensive than in Brooklyn or Queens .

Brooklyn – urban and relaxed: For a long time, Brooklyn was the insider’s tip: now it’s “completely” normal neighborhoods. However, you’ll quickly notice one thing: life is much more normal, because it’s more of a residential area. It’s super relaxed, pleasant, and just as diverse as Manhattan. Above all, you can enjoy the Manhattan skyline from here!

Queens – the new trendy neighborhood: Queens is a bit more “normal” than Brooklyn is, but, lately, we’ve noticed that it is getting more and more gentrified. The hotels in Long Island City (not to be confused with Long Island!) are especially popular because they are cheaper compared to Manhattan—and they have a perfect connection to the Subway, which makes Queens a great alternative to Manhattan and Brooklyn.

What to See in New York?

One thing to know in advance: just because there is so much to see in New York, a little planning makes absolute sense. For highlights like the Empire State Building ( here ), the Edge Hudson Yards observation deck ( here ) or the One World Observatory ( here ), I recommend buying the tickets online in advance. This will not only save you waiting time on site, but you can also be sure that you will actually be able to visit your desired sights.

These are my tips after more than 20 visits to New York:

• Observation decks:  New York City has no less than five (!) major observation decks to offer, and each one is a dream in itself. My two favorites are The Edge Hudson Yards and the One World Observatory , because from here you have a sensational view of New York from above and you can see the Empire State Building . From the end of 2021, another cool option will be added with the glass One Vanderbilt . One more thing about the Empire State Building: It’s the most visited observation deck in New York, so it’s always busy. Avoid the crowds in the morning – and if you really want to go to the Empire State Building in the evening, choose Thursday, Friday or Saturday. During those times, a saxophonist plays on the observation deck. Important: book the Skip-the-Line-Tickets (you can do that here). Then, you can easily save 1-2 hours of waiting time!
• Visit the Statue of Liberty : The trip from Battery Park to the Statue of Liberty is super-popular. To save yourself long waiting times, make sure you take the first ferry of the day. Here, you can find the best Statue of Liberty Cruises right now.
• Definitely take a boat tour , because seeing New York from the water is like being on vacation. Choices range from the free Staten Island Ferry or the NYC Ferry ($2.90 each way) to sailing tours (gorgeous) and the classic sightseeing tours that are included with all major New York passes.
• Walk along the High Line from the Meatpacking District to Hudson Yards .
• Visit Times Square in the evening – that’s when it’s at its most impressive.
• Relax in Central Park or Bryant Park .
• Plan a maximum of three attractions per day . After all, you don’t want any sightseeing stress.

The best shopping areas in New York are Broadway, SoHo , Chelsea, the Meatpacking District, and Williamsburg in Brooklyn. And, of course, 5th Avenue!

Avoid Times Square for shopping!

A real tourist trap are the stores around Times Square – they are not only overpriced, but also the quality is not right in most cases!

Visit a Broadway Show

New York is known for its many musicals and Broadway shows – most of which are performed in the Theatre District around Times Square. Here are our tips on the  best Broadway Shows in New York . 1. Tibbetts Point Lighthouse (Cape Vincent; Jefferson County)

58-foot tall historic lighthouse located “where the lake and the river meet.” Point of land where the St. Lawrence River joins Lake Ontario. Built in 1854. Gorgeous sunsets.

2. Walkway Over the Hudson (Poughkeepsie; Dutchess County)

One of Upstate’s greatest man-made wonders. Old train bridge which crosses the Hudson River now turned into the world’s longest pedestrian walkway. Hundreds of thousands walk over the river here each year.

3. Farmers Museum (Cooperstown; Otsego County)

A glimpse of life in Upstate New York in the 1800s. Home of the Cardiff Giant, which was once known as “America’s Greatest Hoax.”

4. Anchor Bar (Buffalo; Erie County)

Birthplace of the No. 1 appetizer in the country, chicken wings. The Buffalo hot wings were invented at this neighborhood bar on March 4, 1964 and since then it has become one of the city’s top destination restaurants.

5. Pratt Rock (Prattsville; Greene County)

A mountaintop canyon with white carvings along the stone walls. All were done by Zadock Pratt who owned the world’s largest tannery in the village named for him. Has been called “New York’s Mount Rushmore.”

6. Corning Tower (Albany; Albany County)

This is the tallest building in New York State outside of New York City. The glass-walled observation deck on the 42nd floor offer visitors an amazing view of the city and mountains in the distance. One of the best free things in Albany.

7. Whiteface Mountain (Wilmington; Essex County)

Take a drive to the top of New York State’s fifth highest mountain. On a clear day you can even see the skyscrapers of downtown Montreal, Canada. The 8-mile Whiteface Veterans Memorial Highway to the top is a toll road.

8. Rod Serling Carousel (Binghamton; Broome County)

Recreation Park is one of Binghamton’s oldest parks. It has a 1925 Herschell carousel which has been enjoyed by visitors since 1925. Playwright Rod Serling, a native of Binghamton, wrote an episode of his famed “Twilight Zone” television show about this park. The episode, titled “Walking Distance,” aired on October 30, 1959.

9. Moosewood Restaurant (Ithaca; Tompkins County)

Popular vegetarian restaurant opened by a group of friends in 1973. Restaurant is very popular with college students, college alumni, locals and tourists. Famed for their cookbooks with more than a dozen in print, they are among the bestselling recipe books in the country.

10. Northeast Classic Car Museum (Norwich; Chenango County)

A dazzling auto museum with one of the largest collections of Franklin cars in the country. Over 160 vehicles with many dating from 1899 to post-World War II.

Amazing outdoor sculpture park constructed in a quarry. Intricate man-made stairways, passages, and stone walls. Gorgeous bluestone setting. Popular with tourists and as a wedding site.

12. Rondout Area (Kingston; Ulster County)

Kingston was the first capital of New York State. The Rondout is the city’s historic waterfront area. Many fine shops, restaurants, and museums in area.

13. Jell-O Museum (Le Roy; Genesee County)

Le Roy is the birthplace of Jell-O. A Jell-O museum here tells the story of the beginnings of “America’s Favorite Dessert” through exhibits, audio and visual presentations and many examples of rare Jell-O ephemera from the past century.

14. Andes Hotel (Andes; Delaware County)

A historic tavern, inn and motel built in 1853. Great weekend destination in the autumn months. The wide front porch here is a half-block long and is perfect for dinner, drinks and people watching (or leaf peeping).

15. Strong National Museum of Play (Rochester; Monroe County)

A museum dedicated to the concept that play is not only good for all ages, but also is healthy! Home of the National Toy Hall of Fame. Yes, this is where your Etch-A-Sketchs, spinning tops, Candyland games and your little red wagon all came to be immortalized.

16. Lucille Ball Grave (Jamestown; Chautauqua County)

Hometown girl Lucille Ball is buried in Lake View Cemetery here. Thousands come to Lucy’s grave each year to pay their respects. City is home to the National Comedy Museum and a museum dedicated to Lucy and Desi and their groundbreaking show “I Love Lucy.”

17. Ithaca Commons (Ithaca; Tompkins County)

A groundbreaking pedestrian mall in the heart of the downtown business district. All vehicular traffic routed around the commercial district. A popular gathering place for shopping, dining, festivals, concerts and with over 100 independently owned specialty stores and businesses. The Commons today is the cultural and retail heart of the city of Ithaca.

18. 1890 House Museum (Cortland; Cortland County)

One of Upstate’s great old mansions that is open for public tours. Was the former home of millionaire Chester Wickwire. He made his millions producing woven wire products, such as screens, horse muzzles, popcorn poppers, stove sieves, etc. At one time more than half of the adults in Cortland were employed by Wickwire’s company. The mansion is a Victorian-era stunner.

19. Brooks House of Bar-B-Q (Oneonta; Otsego County)

Now in the hands of a third generation of Brooks family members, this is one of New York’s most famous family chicken restaurants. Winner of the James Beard Classic American Restaurant Award. Barbecue chicken is cooked on the largest indoor charcoal fire pit east of the Mississippi (38-feet long).

20. USS Slater (Albany; Albany County)

This ship, docked in the Hudson River in Albany, is a floating military museum unlike any other. Of the 563 Destroyer Escorts that were built and employed during World War II, the Slater is the last surviving one still afloat. Today it is an amazing museum which offers tours of the ship from top to bottom. Most of the docents are retired naval officers who give interesting details about the ship and its crew as you go from the bunk room, to the engine room, to the captain’s dining quarters and even to the gun turrets (the kids like this part the best).

21. Canandaigua City Pier (Canandaigua; Ontario County)

This Finger Lakes community of 10,000 residents acts as a gateway to this popular tourism region of Upstate New York. At the lake front is a long pier which allows the visitor to walk far out over the water and enjoy a spectacular view of the lake and the surrounding shoreline. Near the end of the pier is a famous cluster of gaily colored small boat houses that have become a bit of a charming icon of the city. Rarely do you view the pier and boat houses without seeing artists or photographers capturing this image in paintings and pictures.

22. John Boyd Thacher State Park (Voorheesville; Albany County)

A fantastic state park located 18 miles from the Capital District. The park offers all recreational amenities associated with a state park, with a few exceptions. The view from the park, which is located at the top of the Helderlberg Escarpment, is breathtaking. In the distance you can see the foothills of the Adirondacks, the Green Mountains of Vermont, and the skyscrapers of Albany’s Empire Plaza. The famed Indian Ladder Trail allows a visitor to descend a 60-foot metal ladder and then walk along a narrow path which clings to the face of a cliff. The path takes you under a waterfall so intrepid visitors are bound to get a little wet.

23. Oldest Miniature Golf Course in U.S.A. (Irondequoit; Monroe County)

This is fun and historic. The oldest operating miniature golf course in the United States. The Parkside Whispering Pines Mini-Golf is a real slice of Americana. The course is decidedly old-fashioned, but fun to play. The theme here is the ocean (or the Great Lakes since the course is a 9-iron drive from Lake Ontario). It is dotted with lighthouses, lobster traps, colorful buoys, and carved pelicans. And American flags. Lots of American flags. Opened in 1930. A 1950s-style diner adjoins the course.

24. Olana (Hudson; Columbia County)

The magnificent estate of famed artist Frederick E. Church. This Moorish-like castle crowns the top of a mountain overlooking the Hudson Valley. Church lived here for years and oversaw the building and expansion of the home. The large windows of the living quarters “frame” the magnificent Hudson paintings that he was famous for. Tours of the mansion as well as the 250-acre grounds are fascinating. Don’t forget to ask your tour guide for the story of the four teapots on the roof!

25. The Wild Center (Tupper Lake; Franklin County)

Since opening in 2006 this has become one of the most popular tourist destinations in the Adirondack Park. Although basically a natural history education center, the highlight is the Wild Walk. Here, through a series of intricate suspension bridges, pathways and platforms, the visitor can gradually walk up and over the canopy of forests far below, getting a literal bird’s eye view of the scenery.

26. Erie Canal Museum (Syracuse; Onondaga County)

The Erie Canal is one of the great jewels in New York State (and American) history. Called “the greatest engineering marvel of its day,” it is a bit tricky to consume it all in one swoop. Unless you travel the 363 miles of the canal. But the Erie Canal Museum does tell a comprehensive story of this incredible feat and the museum tells it all in a historic building. Its home is in the Weghlock Buildng, the last of several giant buildings which weighed canal boats as they passed through, assessing fees according to the weight. Be sure and get a selfie out front with “The Mule Named Sal,” which honors the engine power of the mules who pulled the canal boats from Albany to Buffalo.

27. Seneca Falls (Seneca County)

One of the most historic communities in Upstate New York. Known as “The Birthplace of the Women’s Rights Movement,” many consider any education of the social movement for women’s causes to be incomplete without a visit to this famous village. There are museums, historical markers, famous homes, and impressive statues throughout the village all illustrating the legacy of Seneca Falls. And while visiting, be sure and explore the village’s connection to the famous movie classic “It’s A Wonderful Life.” It is a great story!

28. The TePee (Cherry Valley; Otsego County)

At onetime, NYS Rt. 20 was the most important east-west road in Upstate New York. It was dotted with roadside motels, ice cream stands, old-fashioned diners, and busy towns. With the advent of the New York State Thruway (1954) just a few miles north of Rt. 20, the highway became an afterthought and many of the businesses and small towns faced hard times. One iconic souvenir from the past perseveres, however. The TePee was built in 1950 and is still in business today. A fifty-foot-tall metal tepee, the store sells New York State products, Native American gifts and jewelry, clothing, and folk art. Thousands stop by for a touch of nostalgia every year. And across the road is a breathtaking view of the Mohawk Valley.

29. Medina Toy Train Museum (Median; Orleans County)

A fantasy land for all baby boomers who have electric toy trains. This museum has the largest toy train layout in the East. It sprawls over 200 feet long and it 15 feet wide. At any given time, you can see trains of all vintages making their way through miniature settings of cities, farms, wilderness and small towns. This is the place where your toy dreams live on forever.

30. National Baseball Hall of Fame and Museum (Cooperstown; Otsego County)

It is hard to fathom the fact that more than a quarter million visitors a year come to Cooperstown, a little village of less than 2,000 residents. The Hall is a mecca for generations of baseball lovers to come and enjoy, learn and pay tribute to the “boys of summer” from their own past. The Hall of Plaques, where only the best are honored, is a place of quiet reflection and reminiscence. This is the state’s greatest sports museum.

31. Corning Museum of Glass (Corning; Steuben County)

Another of Upstate’s world class museums. The city is the home of Corning Glass and the entire city pay homage to the industry and the company in many ways. First and foremost is a visit to the Corning Museum of Glass. The story of the company’s beginning is told in audio and visual exhibits and examples of some of the glass artisan’s most impressive works. Do not miss the glass-blowing demonstration in the little amphitheater. You may be lucky enough to take home a one-of-a-kind “made before your eyes” piece of glass art. The museum also has one of the best museum gift shops in the state.

32. Animal Adventure Park (Harpursville; Broome County)

A wonderful animal park for all ages to enjoy. Youngsters will thrill at the chance to feed any of the 300 varieties of animals on site. The park gained international fame when it live-streamed the birth of a giraffe, Tajiri, in 2017. More than a million people watched it on the park’s YouTube channel.

33. Our Lady of Victory Shrine and Basilica (Lackawanna; Erie County)

One of the most beautiful churches in North America. This enormous cathedral was the inspiration of Father Nelson Baker, known locally as “The Padre of the Poor.” It was built at a cost of $3.2-million dollars and Father Baker served his first mass there on May 25, 1926. The interior of the basilica is a wonder. The stained-glass windows, elaborate altars, Italian marble columns, and remote sanctuaries are exquisite. When Father Baker died, in 1936 at the age of 94, he was buried in the churchyard. Later it was discovered that he may have contributed to miracles taking place and he began his path to sainthood. His remains were moved to an impressive grotto inside the church which was constructed out of black lava rock from Mt. Vesuvius in Italy.

34. United States Military Academy (West Point; Orange County)

Public tours are given at this historic training ground for officers of the U.S. Army. Of special note on these grounds is the West Point Cadet Chapel, which houses the world’s largest chapel organ (23,511 individual pipes). One of the highlights of any tour of the academy is the West Point Cemetery. Here, as you walk along the solemn rows of graves of some of America’s most storied soldiers, you will recognize the names of Maj. General George Goethals (builder of the Panama Canal), General Norman Schwarzkopf, Jr. who led American troops during Desert Storm, General George Armstrong Custer, who was killed at the Battle of Little Big Horn, and others.

35. Hanford Mills Museum (East Meredith; Delaware County)

One of the last working gristmill and sawmills from the 1800s in the state. Built in 1820, the mill still retains the patina of old-fashioned ingenuity and craftsmanship of a long gone yesteryear. Tours take you into several of the mills’ working buildings to watch handcrafted items being made. A special treat is to observe a giant 1926 Fitz overshot waterwheel come to action powering the entire grounds with water power. As the wheel turns and thousands of gallons of water pour into the wheelhouse from a nearby creek, the display of power can be quite unforgettable.

36. Howe Caverns (Howe Cave; Schoharie County)

New York’s most famous “hole in the ground.” For several generations of young people, a trip “upstate” in the summer meant a stop at this venerable tourist attraction. An elevator takes you 156-feet below the ground, where the temperature is always 56 -degrees. Your tour takes you through amazing displays of rock formations that have been in place for millennia. All are quite beautifully back-lit for dramatic purposes. One of the most popular stops on the underground tour is the Bridal Chapel. Here, on a bright red heart-shaped piece of calcite, more than 600 couples have said “I Do” in an underground ceremony. A boat ride on an underground river is also one of the many fun parts of a visit to Howe Caverns.

37. Franklin D. Roosevelt Home and Grave (Hyde Park; Dutchess County)

The magnificent home of our nation’s 32nd president has long been a popular destination in the Hudson Valley. Roosevelt was born at this Hyde Park mansion on January 30, 1892 and was buried here after his death in 1945. Public tours of the home are given. A gift store sells a wide variety of FDR and other presidents’ memorabilia and souvenirs. The final resting place of FDR and First Lady Eleanor Roosevelt, in the family’s rose garden, is open to the public without taking a tour of the home.

38. Stamford Fire Tower (Stamford; Delaware County)

There are a number of Adirondack and Catskill Mountain fire towers which have been in use for decades, In the Catskills, there is only one fire tower left that is available to drive to by vehicle. Mount Utsayantha, which rises 3,214 feet above the village of Stamford, has a tower and small public park at the summit. The tower is accessible to visitors. The view from the park and the tower, especially in autumn, is one of Upstate’s best.

39. Hyde Hall (Cooperstown; Otsego County)

Brendan Gill, the esteemed architecture critic of The New Yorker magazine has called Hyde Hall, “one of the three or four great buildings of its time.” The mansion was built between 1817 and 1834 for George Clarke, whose grandfather was the governor of colonial New York. The mansion is located at the northern tip of Otsego Lake. Philip Hooker, a prominent American architect designed the home. The neoclassical home is open for public tours. They give an eye-opening glimpse of the glamour of wealthy country life two centuries ago. Your tour will take you through the kitchen, the main dining hall, the bedrooms, courtyards, and private family rooms used by a series of Clarke generations. Plus, you will also see, tucked underneath a curving staircase, the first working flush toilet west of the Hudson River! The view of the lake from the front lawn of the mansion is beautiful.

40. Mark Twain Country (Elmira; Chemung County)

Famed writer and riverboater Mark Twain had a close personal relationship with the Southern Tier city of Elmira. He spent nearly two dozen summers at the home of his wife’s sister in Elmira. Today, the small writing gazebo that he wrote in while there is located on the campus of Elmira College. It is said that the author penned large portions of his adventure books about Tom Sawyer and Huckleberry Finn in that gazebo. Twain is buried in Woodlawn Cemetery in Elmira, section G. Prominent signs will direct you to his final resting place.

41. Arkville Train (Arkville; Delaware County)

There are several options if you are looking to take a train ride in Upstate New York. You can see the fall leaves in the Adirondacks, go on a Santa’s Polar Express in Western New York, and several others. One of the best is a ride on the Delaware and Ulster Railroad in southern Delaware County. You can ride in the vintage rail cars (both open and closed) and enjoy some of Upstate’s most beautiful scenery as you roll along the tracks following the Upper Delaware River. Rides go through the end of October, but the fall trips book up fast. Also, ask about the “train robbery” excursions. The kids love them!

42. Vidler’s 5&10 (East Aurora; Erie County)

The has been called the “most famous five and dime store in America.” It is also the largest. It covers almost an entire block in this historic Western New York village. Tens of thousands of items pack the shelves with the emphasis on nostalgia. Penny candy anyone? You get the idea. While here don’t forget to look up. Way up. A two-ton statue of octogenarian Ed Vidler, of the store’s founding family, sits with his legs straddling over the roof of the store. Locals love him and call him “Vidler on the Roof.”

43. Saratoga Race Course (Saratoga Springs; Saratoga County)

Even if you are not a horse racing fan, a day at this venerable park is a fun, exciting and (hopefully) a winning experience for you. Known as “The August Place to Be” the track is a major tourist destination in the region during the summer months. A walk around the grounds, the rails, the clubhouse, the horse paddocks and the vending area under the trees gives you a glimpse into why this place ranks among New York’s top attractions. It is one of the oldest sports venues in the country, including all sports. Opened in 1863.

44. Taughannock Falls State Park (Trumansburg; Tompkins County)

Beautiful park just north of Ithaca. The star here is a waterfall, of which Upstate has no shortage of. Taughannock Falls is the centerpiece of this 750-acre park and features a dramatic plunge which plummets 215-feet. That not only makes it the tallest single drop waterfall East of the Rockies, but the waterfall is actually higher than the mighty Niagara Falls (the Horseshoe Falls at Niagara drops “just” 167 feet). Plenty of pathways to explore in the park as well as viewing areas to observe (and photograph) the falls itself.

45. Point Lookout (East Windham; Greene County)

A perennial tourist stop which offers a grand view of five states. From this promontory you can see (on a clear day) the forests and rivers of New York, Connecticut, Vermont, Massachusetts, and the White Mountains of New Hampshire. An inn and “lookout” has been located at this site to cater to tourists with meals and souvenirs for over 75 years ago.

46. World’s Largest Kaleidoscope (Mount Tremper; Ulster County)

The Emerson Resort is one of the most exquisite resorts in the Catskills. But it is not too fancy to offer up an exciting adventure inside an old barn silo. The silo, which is 60-feet tall, has been transformed into a dazzling kaleidoscope. Visitors enter through a bottom door and watch in amazement as hundreds of pieces of crafted colored glass dance across the ceiling to the accompaniment of music and a light show. 47. Safe Haven Museum (Oswego; Oswego County)

One of New York’s smallest and yet most important museums. Located near the grounds of historic Fort Ontario, the Safe Haven Museum is the last standing building of what was America’s only Jewish refugee center during World War II. The story it tells inside is chilling and inspirational. 982 Jews from war ravaged Europe made a harrowing trip from Italy to Oswego in 1944 where they were housed in a camp as “personal guests of President Franklin D. Roosevelt.” This was the only place in the country where refugees were accepted. The museum features photographs, documents, oral histories, and artifacts from the period.

48. Woodstock Concert Site (Bethel; Sullivan County)

Now known officially as the Bethel Woods Center for the Arts, this is perhaps the most famous concert site in the world. Nearly a half-million young people converged on the hallowed field here for the 1969 rock concert that will live for eternity. The concert field, then a dirty mud field, is now a beautifully landscaped rolling lawn. There is a Woodstock monument and a great museum near the top of the hill. Concerts are still held here.

49. Old Rhinebeck Aerodrome (Rhinebeck; Dutchess County)

So much fun here. This is a living museum that offers many old-time airshows using authentic vintage planes. Thousands attend these shows all season long, and marvel as a dozen or more planes take flight and soar overhead. The biggest applause is always saved for the 1909 Bieriot, the oldest flying airplane in the Western Hemisphere, or any of the several vintage biplanes, plus an exact replica of Lucky Lindy’s famous “Spirit of St. Louis.” A great family outing!

50. Susan B. Anthony Grave (Rochester; Monroe County)

Ms. Anthony’s grave is the most visited in this expansive historic cemetery in Rochester. Mt. Hope is the final resting place of 350,000 thousand people, many of them famous. Anthony, the towering figure of the Women’s Rights Movement, is buried in Section C, Lot 93 of the cemetery. Hundreds of women walk to her grave each year during election time to place their “I Voted” stickers on her tombstone in tribute to the woman who fought so long for their right to vote.

New York, the concrete jungle. While many people visit the Big Apple, and rightfully so, there are so many other things this beautiful state has to offer. Explore New York with this guide to the best road trips in New York State. Whether you only have a long weekend or a two-week vacation, you will be able to explore the nature of this state outside of the city. Make your way to Niagara Falls or head further north to see the fall foliage on Lake Placid.

1 – New York City to Niagara Falls

Best Season: Summer and Fall

Most of Upstate New York is full of green landscapes and natural waters, this route will give you the best New York road trip for those who love waterfalls and a bit of hiking. Once you get out of the city, you will make a two hour journey north for your first stop to see the Catskill mountains, there are a few iconic towns to stay in this area, like Woodstock. 

During the summer months, you will be able to enjoy the Kaaterskill Waterfalls and visit the Emerson Kaleidoscope which is the world’s largest kaleidoscope. Spend a morning hiking to Overlook Mountain for some breathtaking views before you head west to your next destination.

From Woodstock head to Syracuse for a day. You can either take the route through Albany along the Hudson River, or I’d recommend going a bit out of the way to drive the Catskill Scenic Byway. Here you will be able to explore the Green Lakes State Park featuring two glacial lakes amidst the forest. This is truly something you can’t miss on this New York Natural Wonders Roadtrip. 

There are a few stops on your way from Syracuse to Finger Lakes, I recommend taking your time on this part of the road trip as there is much to explore. Our end destination is Niagara Falls, but there are some smaller waterfalls on the way. 

Here you will find Buttermilk Falls State Park in Ithaca with plenty of hiking trails and the ability to swim in the Buttermilk Falls, it is easy to spend a full day here. After spending some time here, you will make your way to the main attraction of this area – Taughannock Falls, the tallest single-drop waterfall east of the Rockies. 

Leaving the Finger Lakes will be hard, but what awaits you will be worth it. This will be the longest part of your road trip, it’s about a three-and-a-half hour drive to Buffalo. A few stops along the way you can make include Montour Falls, Birkett Mills, which is known for making the world’s largest pancake in 1987 and Eternal Flame Falls. 

We are approaching the end of this roadtrip with some time in Buffalo, make sure to enjoy some Buffalo wings here and then finish your journey to Niagara Falls, 30 minutes from Buffalo. As one of the most famous destinations in the world, you will be able to feel the water on your face from the force of the falls. There are many ways to witness this wonder of nature, get up close and personal on a boat or stand on the bridge. Either way, your jaw will not leave the floor for a while.

2 – New York City to Lake Placid 

Highlights: Lake Placid, Hunters Mountain Adirondack Mountains, Olympic Site,

Duration: 5 days

Heading from NYC to Lake Placid is one of the best New York road trips. The best time of year for this road trip is in Autumn when the leaves are changing and you can see all of the fall foliage. However, it will still be beautiful any time of year. 

Head out of the city to Poughkeepsie, about a two-hour journey. Walking over the Hudson River Walkway is what this town is most famous for as it’s the longest footbridge in the world at 1.3 miles long. You will then continue on to Hunters Mountain. Take the chairlift all the way to the top. These views keep going all the way to the Massachusetts mountainscape. Stay the night nearby and wake up for a sunrise hike on Mount Utsayantha. You can also drive this but if you have the time and the enthusiasm, you will not regret this hike. 

After a morning of hiking and grabbing some food, continue your journey onto Albany, with a stop at John Boyd Thacher State Park for some memorable views of the Adirondack Valleys.

Make sure to take your time on the last or your journey as it comes with some relaxation and stunning landscapes. Make your way to Saratoga Spa State Park where you can really enjoy yourself in their hot springs and being amongst the Adirondack Mountains. 

On your way from the hot springs, the route will take you to Prospect Mountain Highway where you will have some incredible views of Lake George. You won’t need to stop here, just enjoy the scenery all the way to Lake Placid. Explore the area, take in the foliage and visit the olympic sites on your last stop on this East Coast road trip.

3 – New York City to New York City 

Highlights: Lake Placid, Hunters Mountain Adirondack Mountains, Olympic Site, Kaaterskill Waterfalls, Emerson Kaleidoscope, Green Lakes State Park, Catskill Scenic Byway, Buttermilk Falls State Park, Taughannock Falls, Finger Lakes, Birkett Mills, Montour Falls, Eternal Flame Falls, Niagara Falls 

Duration: 10 days

If you are starting your road trip in the big city and need to end up back there, here is the perfect circular road trip from New York City. For this road trip you can combine the above trips to Lake Placid and Niagara Falls.   

Starting your journey from NYC head north to Albany making stops at the Hudson River Walkway, Hunters Mountain, Mount Utsayantha and John Boyd Thacher State Park. Spend some time in the Adirondack Mountains as you continue your journey to Lake Placid. This part of your journey should take three to four days.

Once you reach Lake Placid, explore the Olympic village from 1980. After rejuvenating yourself in this serene part of the state, you will start your journey to Niagara Falls. Straight through this is about a seven-hour drive. Split the drive into two days with a night in Syracuse. Stop in Alexandria Bay to explore the thousand islands and the Boldt Castle. From Alexandria Bay, drive to Syracuse for the night.

Today you will reach Niagara Falls with a stop in Rochester if you like museums, if not then no worries, grab a coffee, and continue onto the Falls. Spend a couple of nights in Buffalo as it’s only a 30-minute drive to the falls and you can enjoy the city and go on a boat tour of Niagara Falls.

I am not sure you can ever get your fill of the Falls but unfortunately, it is time to head back to the city. Spend your last four days driving through the finger lakes and Catskill mountains. Make some stops at Montour Falls, Birkett Mills, and Eternal Flame Falls as you head to the Finger Lakes and onto Albany. Some of your major stopping points should be Kaaterskill Waterfalls and Woodstock and then back to the bright lights.

4 – Albany to Buffalo

Spend a day at Cayuga lake before the three-and-a-half hour journey to Buffalo to spend some time at Niagara Falls and enjoy the art galleries in the city. 

5 – Albany to Lake Champlain

Ah, love. It can make a guy do crazy things. Especially a guy with money. Prussian immigrant George C. Boldt, who worked his way up through the hospitality industry to become a hotel tycoon, first took his family to New York's Thousand Islands region in 1893. Two years later, they bought five-acre Hart Island, renamed it "Heart Island" and began to chisel their offshore property into the shape of a heart.

From 1900 to 1903, 300 craftsmen labored to build a six-story, 120-room, Rhineland-style castle, which Boldt intended to present to his beloved wife, Louise, on her Valentine's Day birthday. But in January of 1904, a telegram ordered a halt to construction. Louise had died of a heart attack. Her broken-hearted husband never returned to the island, but you can catch a boat to see the building that still tells their love story. Battered by the elements for 73 years, Boldt Castle was acquired by the Thousand Islands Bridge Authority in 1977 and has been restored to become one of New York's most romantic attractions.

4. Northeast Dirt Modified Museum & Hall of Fame

Founded in 1992 by Glenn Donnelly, the Northeast Dirt Modified Museum & Hall of Fame is home to a vast collection of stock car racing memorabilia, classic cars and honorees who have made history in the sport. 5. Hallwalls Contemporary Art Center

New York State auditors monitor everything from people’s travel schedules to the locations of their pets in order to prove that they owe taxes even if they have residency out of state , according to a report.

Wealthy Empire State residents who maintain an abode in New York but spend most of their time elsewhere are still on the hook to pay the taxman in Albany.

State auditors go to great lengths to investigate claims by those who say they are either part-time or nonresidents of New York, according to Bloomberg News.

Auditors will peek into people’s private lives and apply a so-called “teddy bear test” to see where individuals keep some of their most prized possessions so as to back up their claims of primary residency.

The state will also consider someone as having spent the day within its jurisdiction even if they were there for just a few hours.

A transplanted New Yorker who moved out of state and then came back for outpatient treatment at a hospital will have that time be counted as residing in New York.

New York State auditors will even consider someone driving from New Jersey to Connecticut and getting of the highway in New York to stop for lunch as having spent the day in New York.

“We always tell people the tax audit from New York is like the tax version of a colonoscopy,” Mark Klein, a tax attorney at Hodgson Russ, told Bloomberg News.

“I’ve had cases that have hinged on a single dog,” Klein said. “And I had a case once that was based on the fact that the person moved their Peloton bicycle to Florida.”

According to the New York Department of Taxation and Finance, a New York resident is anyone who spends at least 184 days in the state during the taxable year and maintains a permanent place of abode.

One of the most popular destinations in recent years for New Yorkers is Florida. But those who migrated south can still expect to hear from tax auditors in Albany.

Jonathan Mariner, an investor who created TaxDay, an app that tracks users’ locations to ensure they don’t overstay the 184-day threshold, said that New Yorkers who moved to Florida and filed a partial return with Albany can expect to hear from auditors.

“Even though you have a Florida driver’s license, Florida voting record, Florida home, it does not matter,” Mariner, himself a transplanted New Yorkers who decamped for Florida, told Bloomberg News.

“You could be on vacation in New York and they’ll pull you back in.”

Tax attorneys advise their wealthy clients to be particular about how much time they spend in New York so that they can avoid paying significant sums of state income tax.

Others will be in their vehicles near the George Washington Bridge just before midnight — waiting for the clock to strike 12 before crossing the Hudson River into Manhattan, according to Bloomberg News.

Between 2013 and 2017, New York State auditors collected around $1 billion from 15,000 audits.

The state has stepped up the pace of tax audits in recent years. In the 2022-2023 tax year, the state conducted 756,344 — which yielded $3.22 billion in collections, according to the Department of Taxation and Finance.

The year prior, the state conducted 826,577 audits, which resulted in $2.21 billion in collections.

Residency audits are a key source of tax revenue for the state, which has seen an exodus of high earners who moved to Florida.

In 2023, New York State had the third highest income tax rate in the country , according to a study by TurboTax.

Florida is among nine states that do not levy a state income tax.

According to census data, more than half a million people have left New York since 2020 — an outflow that was spurred by the coronavirus pandemic as well as a sharp decline in the quality of life throughout the Big Apple, which saw a spike in crime, homelessness and cost of living.

Last year alone, the New York metropolitan area lost 65,000 residents.

Donald Trump could face prison time if he is convicted in upcoming NY hush money trial

If former President Donald Trump is convicted on all counts in his New York criminal hush money trial that begins April 15, he could theoretically face more than a decade in prison.

But most legal experts who spoke to USA TODAY said such a dramatic outcome is unlikely. Instead, he would likely be sentenced to something between probation and four years in prison. And he would probably still be out, free to campaign for president as the presumptive or actual 2024 Republican nominee, while his all-but-certain appeal was pending.

Trump faces 34 felony counts of falsifying business records to cover up a hush money payment to adult film actress Stormy Daniels. Each count carries a maximum sentence of four years.

While Trump could in principle be sentenced to serve multiple counts consecutively, several experts said that is unlikely because he has no felony criminal record and the charges don't involve allegations of physical violence.

On the other hand, Trump has tested boundaries and feuded with the judge who may determine his fate.

Trump has antagonized Judge Juan Merchan

Trump's sentence would be decided by Judge Juan Merchan, who has grown exasperated by the former president's pretrial behavior. Merchan expanded a gag order this month after Trump attacked the judge's daughter on social media over her marketing work with Democratic candidates, including posting a photo of her. Merchan said Trump has a history of attacking the family members of judges and lawyers in his legal cases.

"The average observer, must now, after hearing Defendant's recent attacks, draw the conclusion that if they become involved in these proceedings, even tangentially, they should worry not only for themselves,  but for their loved ones as well ," Merchan wrote in his gag order decision .

John Moscow, a New York lawyer who spent 30 years in the Manhattan District Attorney's Office, told USA TODAY that type of behavior could worsen any sentence Trump faces.

"If I were representing somebody in (Trump's) position, I would suggest to him that the judge is the one who imposes sentence and he ought to be careful," Moscow said.

If Merchan did consider a hefty sentence, it wouldn't be the first time he has taken a harsh view about behavior in Trump's orbit.

In 2023, Merchan was forced to sentence former Trump Organization chief financial officer Allen Weisselberg to only five months in jail because Merchan had previously accepted a plea bargain agreement between Weisselberg and prosecutors specifying that jail term. Weisselberg pleaded guilty to tax and record falsification charges and agreed to testify against the Trump Organization at trial in order to get that sentence.

The judge said, however, that he "would be imposing a sentence much greater than that" had he not accepted the plea bargain before hearing all the evidence at the trial. Without the plea deal, Weisselberg could have faced many years in prison.

What is Trump charged with?

Trump has pleaded not guilty to all counts in the case, which focuses on whether he falsified business records to cover up reimbursements to his former lawyer, Michael Cohen, for a $130,000 hush money payment to Daniels. Daniels has said she had a sexual encounter with Trump soon after Melania Trump gave birth to their son, Barron Trump. Trump denies the claim.

In order to secure felony convictions, Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg's office must convince a 12-person jury that Trump falsified the records in order to commit or conceal another crime. In this case, Bragg argues Trump was trying to conceal a federal campaign finance law violation by falsely recording his reimbursements to Cohen as payments for legal services. The federal violation was a limit-exceeding contribution to Trump's 2016 presidential campaign, as the payment was allegedly designed to keep Daniels' story from hurting the then-Republican nominee's election prospects. Bragg also alleges Trump was trying to conceal a plan to violate New York tax and election laws.

Nothing in the Constitution prevents Trump from becoming president even if he is convicted or sentenced to prison. If he won the election, however, courts may delay any prison time until after his term in office expires .

What is the maximum possible sentence?

The 34 felony counts Trump faces are classified as "Class E felonies" under New York law – the lowest level felony in the state. The maximum penalty on each count is four years of prison, and a judge would have discretion over whether to order Trump to serve sentences on each count at the same time or one after the other. However, New York caps such sentencing for Class E felonies at 20 years .

In addition, New York judges often impose sentencing ranges, where an incarcerated person becomes eligible for parole at the low end of the range. For Class E felonies, the lowest end of a range would be one-and-a-third years per count, while the highest would be four years. Good behavior in jail or prison can speed things up even more.

A sentence limited to probation?

Merchan would also have discretion to order a fixed sentence of less than those ranges, including probation.

That's what Mitchell Epner, a New York lawyer with decades of criminal law experience, expects would happen even if Trump were convicted on all counts. Epner noted the felony charges aren't violent and don't involve drugs.

"With a defendant who has no prior criminal record, my absolute expectation would be a sentence of probation," Epner told USA TODAY.

Epner wasn't alone in thinking that could be the sentencing outcome.

"This is a case that does not involve any physical violence, and it doesn't – there's not sort of a 'named victim,' so to speak – and so the court is going to take that into consideration," Anna Cominsky, who directs the Criminal Defense Clinic at New York Law School, told USA TODAY.

"In addition, I think it is unlikely that he would be sent to prison given who he is, given both the fact that he has no criminal record, and there is no getting around the fact that he is a former president of the United States," Cominsky said.

Incarceration a real possibility

Norman Eisen, a Brookings Institution senior fellow who served as special counsel to the House Judiciary Committee during Trump's first impeachment, thought a sentence that includes some incarceration is likely.

Eisen co-authored a report looking at sentencing for other defendants with no criminal history who were convicted of falsifying business records in New York. There, he noted one construction executive was sentenced in 2015 to spend two days each week in jail for a year for falsifying records to conceal payments in a bribery scheme. In 2013, two corporate executives were ordered to spend four to six months in jail for falsifying records to misclassify their salaries as expenses under their employer's larger bribery and fraud scheme.

"I think he's likely to face a sentence of incarceration if he's convicted," Eisen told USA TODAY.

Cominsky said the evidence Merchan hears at trial could also influence his thinking when it comes to sentencing.

"Often you'll hear judges refer to testimony at trial, evidence that was presented at trial, and say, 'This is why I'm imposing this sentence, because I heard from this particular witness or I saw this particular piece of evidence,'" Cominsky said.

Moscow pushed back against the assumption that Trump's sentences on each count would run simultaneously, instead of being stacked on top of each other. Just as a judge may take into account that a defendant has won a Nobel Peace Prize or lifted orphans from poverty, the judge may look at significant evidence of bad acts, Moscow said.

"When you start attacking the judge's daughter, and making her out to be a target, you have just breached the normal rules," Moscow said.

Trump has also posted a photo of himself wielding a bat, with his eyes directed toward an adjacent photo of Bragg, among other attacks on the district attorney. Bragg's office has received thousands of harassing emails, calls, and texts – including death threats – after Trump's social media attacks, it said in a court filing .

Diana Florence, a New York lawyer who spent decades in the Manhattan District Attorney's office, said Merchan's sentence would need to have some relation to what other white-collar defendants in similar cases have received, and she would be surprised if someone had ever gotten a sentencing range for falsifying business records with a minimum of 10 years or more.

Such a long sentence "would be very, very, very, very unusual, and if Judge Merchan wanted to make a point and do that, I highly doubt the appellate division would allow that to stand," she said. "It's just too much time for the conduct."

However, Florence added that a reasonable sentencing range could include a minimum period of more than a year incarcerated.

Sentencing someone with Secret Service protection?

Contemplating any jail or prison sentence would take Merchan into unchartered territory: Trump is the first former president ever criminally charged, and the Secret Service provides him with around-the-clock security.

But avoiding a sentence of incarceration on that basis risks undermining the idea of equal treatment under the law, Moscow suggested.

"If I were the judge − and I don't know what a judge would do in this case − I would reject out of hand the concept that because he was once president, and because as a matter of policy the Secret Service guards former presidents, that therefore he can't go to jail," Moscow said.

The question would then become how to reconcile equal treatment with ensuring a former president's security, according to Moscow. The judge could get creative, for example by ordering the former president to stay in a hotel wing or at a military base, where he is isolated just like any other prisoner but still has Secret Service protection.

"You can structure things to achieve the proper result without conceding that the defendant has the upper hand," Moscow said.

Chances of immediate prison? 'Less than 1%'

Many convicted defendants are "remanded" pending sentencing, a process in which they are taken into custody while they await their sentence, Florence said.

But Florence didn't expect Merchan to give that order when it comes to Trump, and even if Merchan did, Trump would likely be able to get bail set by an appeals court in the thousands of dollars to stay free during his appeal. That's all the more likely if Trump receives a low sentence, since the appeal could take longer than his actual sentence, she said.

"The chances of him going to prison immediately, even if he's convicted in whatever, six weeks from now or whenever, are I would say less than 1% because he would immediately be released on bail pending appeal," according to Florence.

Eisen agreed Trump probably wouldn't be incarcerated by Election Day, even if he's convicted on all counts.

"I think he's extremely unlikely to be forced to serve that sentence pending appeal," Eisen said.
