17 Tips For Your First Trip to Disney World as an Adult

I recently took my first trip to Disney World as an adult — and wow, did I ever enjoy it! I’m not a Disney superfan by any stretch, but an opportunity to visit arose — and I jumped on it right away.

I LOVED Disney when I was a kid. I went once as a baby, once when I was five, and once when I was nine — but I haven’t been back since childhood. They were actually building the Tower of Terror on my last visit!

But long after that trip as a nine-year-old, I would pore over Disney books, dreaming of my next Disney vacation. (I would do the same with books about different countries, dreaming of traveling the world someday.)

This past fall, my mom moved to central Florida, just a short drive from Disney World. The timing was perfect! We would go for a day trip.

Disney has changed a LOT since the 90s. It’s incredibly crowded, painfully expensive, and just planning a trip requires a ton of research, planning, and extra purchases to make sure you won’t be waiting in lines all day. And that’s before you add in the COVID factor.

At my heart, I’m a travel writer. I go to places. I tell people how to do it better. So here is a full report on what I learned on my day at Disney, and what you should know before planning a trip as an adult.

You cannot wing a trip to Disney World.

Are you the kind of person who doesn’t like planning much, who likes to show up and take things as they come? Well, if you do that at Disney World, particularly at the Magic Kingdom or Hollywood Studios, you’re going to be waiting in lines all day.

If this is your first trip to Disney World as an adult, you’ve got a lot of research ahead of you. There is so much to learn. But it’s fun! I spent so many hours engrossed in different Disney blogs and social media channels.

You’ll need to research popular rides, itineraries, and how to book rides strategically using the Genie Plus system. If you have your heart set on any particular character experiences, you should book those, too.

You should also try to get dining reservations as soon as you can (reservations open 60 days before), especially for popular restaurants like Be Our Guest or Space 220.

So how do you research? Start by asking your friends! I knew I had some Disney-loving friends, but when I asked on Facebook, I got so many more responses than I expected! I guarantee you have more Disney friends than you think.

Research-wise, I found Disney Tourist Blog to be my favorite resource — incredibly comprehensive and detailed, and I loved the voice of the writers. I felt like I could trust what they wrote.

My friend Lia used to be a cast member at Disney and she wrote this great guide on how to do Disney .

My friend Victoria has a Disney blog, Disney Trippers , and she got me excited for Disney experiences I had no idea existed, like Disney Villains After Hours and the Disney dessert parties !

Finally, you need to use the app. It’s called the My Disney Experience App and you can do everything with it. You link to your tickets on it, you do all your Genie Plus and Lightning Lane reservations on it, you use it for mobile ordering and dining reservations, it has a map and the wait times, and so much more.

Which park is best for your first trip to Disney World as an adult?

Walt Disney World has four main parks — Magic Kingdom, Epcot, Hollywood Studios, and Animal Kingdom. Which one is best? I asked my Disney-loving friends and got a dozen different answers. It depends on what you want to do.

Magic Kingdom is the classic Disney park with the castle and all the nostalgia rides that you may remember from your youth, but it’s very young kid-oriented and extremely crowded.

Some famous rides at Magic Kingdom include Space Mountain, the Haunted Mansion, Pirates of the Caribbean, Jungle Cruise, Splash Mountain, Big Thunder Mountain Railroad, Peter Pan’s Flight, It’s a Small World, Seven Dwarfs Mine Train, Dumbo the Flying Elephant, and Under the Sea.

Epcot has lots of science- and education-focused rides, almost all of them low-key, plus the World Showcase with pavilions from different countries. It’s less busy with shorter lines; some people think it’s more boring.

Some famous rides at Epcot include Remy’s Ratatouille Adventure, Frozen Ever After, Test Track, Spaceship Earth, Soarin’ Around the World, Living with the Land, and Journey Into Imagination with Figment.

Hollywood Studios has lots of thrill rides, plus all the Star Wars stuff and Toy Story Land. Lines here are very long as well, though it’s more oriented for older kids and adults.

Some famous rides at Hollywood Studios include Slinky Dog Dash, The Twilight Zone Tower of Terror, Millennium Falcon: Smugglers Run, Star Wars: Rise of the Resistance, Mickey and Minnie’s Runaway Railway, Star Tours, Toy Story Mania, and the Indiana Jones Stunt Tour Spectacular.

Animal Kingdom is the park I don’t know as much about, but from what I’ve read, its crowds are more on the Epcot level, plus it opens and closes earlier than the other parks.

Some famous rides at Animal Kingdom include Na’vi River Journey, Avatar Flight of Passage, DINOSAUR, Expedition Everest, Kilimanjaro Safaris, and Kali River Rapids.

After much consideration, we decided to do a park hopping day, starting at Magic Kingdom and finishing at Epcot. This gave us a chance to have the nostalgia experience in the morning and spend most of the evening exploring the World Showcase.

Was this a good decision? Overall, I’m happy with how our day went, but we could have done it different ways.

Magic Kingdom really is overwhelming in terms of the crowds, and a lot of the long lines are not worth it for more kid-oriented rides if you’re an adult. But this is home to the iconic Disney experiences, and letting go and enjoying it is the way to go!

One thing that disappointed me is that the House of Magic on Main Street is now a generic Disney merch shop. Sigh.

Epcot seemed a lot more my speed, and it definitely works better on a day where you just want to hang out and explore. And it just felt so airier, in part because it covers more ground. Only one ride was sold out for Lightning Lanes and had super-long lines (Remy’s Ratatouille Adventure).

If you intend to ride as many rides as possible, you should not park hop. Pick a park, stick to it, and rope drop, Genie Plus, and Lightning Lane everything you can, especially if it’s Magic Kingdom or Hollywood Studios. You’ll need the full day to do all the rides.

If you don’t care about doing everything, feel free to park hop, but you might want to put the less busy park later. It definitely felt nicer getting into a less-crowded Epcot after super-crowded Magic Kingdom. (Note that it takes almost an hour to get from Magic Kingdom to Epcot.)

I also read it’s popular to park hop with Animal Kingdom in the morning and Epcot later, as in usual times Animal Kingdom opens much earlier and Epcot closes much later, and neither park gets severely overcrowded.

Genie Plus is a Pain — But Essential

Disney got rid of the Fast Pass system in 2021 — instead, you now have Genie Plus, which is complicated at best and a clusterfuck at worst. Genie Plus costs $15 per person per day, and starting at 7:00 AM, you can make your first reservation for the Lightning Lane, where you can skip the line.

You can make new reservations every two hours or after you tap into your next ride, and you can’t book any ride more than once. Reservations are an hour-long window, which gives you flexibility.

I did my research on how to maximize Genie Plus, and I chose to book the Jungle Cruise for my first reservation at 7:00 AM. Not because it was my top choice ride, but because it’s one of the most popular rides. I was on the app exactly at 7:00 AM and the first reservation I could get was at 11:40! That shows you how competitive it is.

And many Disney guests have complained about Genie Plus being buggy. I was only able to make reservations every two hours, regardless of when I finished a ride, and at one point I was told I couldn’t make my next reservation until 5:00 PM even though it was already 5:40 PM. Sigh.

To make things more complicated, there are several rides that have Lightning Lanes but are not on Genie Plus; you need to pay extra for them. You can max two non-Genie Plus Lightning Lane bookings per day. I booked Space Mountain this way for $7.

Do you need Genie Plus? It’s essential for the Magic Kingdom and Hollywood Studios, but not as essential for Epcot or Animal Kingdom, which tend to have fewer rides with long lines.

If you don’t get it, it’s helpful to “rope drop” one of the most popular rides — to be at the gate when the park opens and power-walk your way to the ride.

Make peace with the fact that not everything will be open.

When I was nine, my favorite ride was Big Thunder Mountain Railroad. I adored that roller coaster — it was the perfect level of thrill for me, with a cool southwestern theme.

And entire week I was in Florida in 2022, Thunder Mountain was closed for repairs. Awwwwww.

I was sad, but I made peace and planned to have a fun day anyway.

Space Mountain is showing its age.

I remembered Space Mountain as the wildest ride in Disney World — keep in mind this was back in 1994 — and I was eager for a bit of a thrill after several tame rides. We grabbed a paid Lightning Lane reservation for Space Mountain and strapped in.

Granted, it’s an indoor roller coaster, but it sounded ancient!! And on several of the turns, it snapped my head back, hard — honestly, this is the kind of thing that you don’t see as much these days. I was surprised there wasn’t a headrest.

Space Mountain opened in January 1975, and I think it’s starting to be a bit long in the tooth. I enjoyed the ride, but not the neck-snapping parts. Not quite the highlight of my Disney trip.

Mobile ordering is fantastic.

Need food? The smart way to get it is mobile ordering ahead of time. I absolutely loved mobile ordering — it saved so much time waiting in line.

We wanted to try Dole Whip, Disney’s signature pineapple soft serve, and I know they served it at Aloha Isle in Adventureland. We had a Genie Plus reservation for Jungle Cruise at 11:40. So we ordered two Dole Whips for pickup within 11:10-11:40, paid for them on our phones, and simply went and picked them up.

And those Dole Whips were absolutely delicious — a highlight of the day!

Of course, this is another reminder that YOU NEED TO PLAN YOUR DAY at Disney, especially in the busiest parks like Magic Kingdom and Hollywood Studios.

People really get into Disney shirts.

I couldn’t believe how many custom Disney shirts I saw! So many with people’s names on them, or “Disney Family Vacation 2022” on them (and one with “Disney Vacation 2021” on them…I guess COVID axed that trip).

Lots of kids were dressed up as Disney characters, including a little boy in a gold Belle dress, which made me smile. But adults at Disney are not allowed to dress up in costume. When you think about it, it’s obvious why.

Even though you can’t wear a full costume, you can still have fun! Put together an outfit based on a character you love (maybe a purple mermaid shirt, teal pants, and fork earrings for Ariel?), or go wild with mouse ears. Etsy is an absolute gold mine for Disney stuff.

You need really, REALLY good footwear.

Staying on the theme of what to wear at Disney — good shoes are essential. Better shoes than usual. You will be walking a ton and standing a ton. I clocked 26,000 steps on my Disney day.

I ended up wearing my white leather Cole Haan sneakers , plus my usual insoles, and these were a great choice. While I often wear my Teva Tirra sports sandals for active outdoor days, like when hiking or climbing temples in Mexico, I’m glad I went with sneakers instead.

Clothing-wise, I went with comfy skinny jeans and a light blouse. Go with something comfortable that you can move in.

Don’t forget to bring sunscreen and a reusable water bottle that you can fill up. The Florida sun can be brutal.

Visiting during a festival is fun!

We booked this trip on a bit of a whim, but it happened to be during Epcot’s International Festival of the Arts, which runs from mid-January through mid-February. This ended up being a lot of fun!

The International Festival of the Arts celebrates art in many forms — visual arts, performing arts, culinary arts. There were Disney on Broadway performances, artists selling their wares, and interactive artistic activities.

Best of all, there were pop-up food stands serving special menu items all over Epcot, including international items at the World Showcase. And they were all small servings so you could graze all day. They also had a challenge where if you got stamps for five signature items, you could redeem your passport for a cookie shaped like an artist’s palette.

There are so many festivals at Disney! The Disney Food & Wine Festival runs from July through November (wow!) and I’d love to hit that one up in particular.

Disney is surprisingly dark.

When I say dark here, I mean poorly lit. Honestly, I was stunned by how poorly lit the Disney parks are — both indoors and outdoors.

Indoors, while waiting in line for rides, I wondered if my eyes were going. Then I realized that lots of other people were in the same position, using their phone flashlight to illuminate the path on the way to Space Mountain.

Outdoors was terrible, too — at Epcot, at least. Lights were so sparse, I could barely see where I was going. I looked over at the campanile in the Italy pavilion and thought about all the bell towers I’ve seen all over Italy, and how each of them are lit up beautifully, and Disney does such a poor job by comparison.

I am quite puzzled over this, considering that Disney makes big efforts to cater to people with disabilities. Why so dark? Is it a money-saving measure? They blow a ton of money on fireworks every night!

Disney-goers are afraid of “exotic” food.

One common refrain I saw on Disney blogs is that Skipper Canteen in Adventureland is an underrated dining gem. It’s also easy to get into, as the menu features some “exotic” items that people from Middle America are afraid to try.

Those dishes? Thai noodles. Falafel. Char siu pork. Vegetable curry. Plus some spiced up chicken and steak dishes. A surprisingly large percentage of Disney visitors steer clear of the restaurant for this reason.

I’ve also heard that many Disney guests are disappointed by La Hacienda de San Angel in the Mexico pavilion at Epcot. The reason? This is actual Mexican food and they’re expecting Americanized Mexican food. They only taco options for adults are shrimp or lobster tacos.

I didn’t eat at either of those restaurants, but I saw this in practice at Epcot later. At peak dinnertime, there were long lines everywhere around the World Showcase, but I thought to myself, “I bet Morocco is empty.”

We went to Morocco — and it was empty! They served exotic dishes of chicken kabobs and bread with dips like hummus. There was no line.

Does the World Showcase scratch the travel itch?

Many of my friends said to me something along the lines of, “Oh, you’ll love Epcot, they have all the countries and you’re a traveler.” And my response was to smile and say, “Sure!” But I wondered how I would actually feel about it.

I’ve actually been to all of the countries in the World Showcase except Morocco, and have lived in four of them (USA, Italy, UK, Mexico). Would they be good renditions, or Americanized imitations?

Well. They definitely weren’t accurate. But they were fun! It was nice wandering around and exploring the different pavilions, appreciating the Imagineers’ attention to detail. It’s hard not to be delighted by the miniature train in Germany or the Mayan temple in Mexico.

At one point Charlie and I sat outside with glasses of Prosecco at the Italy pavilion and it just felt NICE to be in an idea of Italy, the country that we visit several times a year, even if it was a fake theme park Italy.

I think of it like this: I love high-end Mexican food, and I also love Taco Bell. I love going to live Shakespeare productions, and I also love bad reality TV. The World Showcase is a long leap from actual international travel, but it’s still a lot of fun.

How good was the food, though?

One of the most popular things people were asking me after this trip was, “Didn’t you love the food? What was the best thing you ate?”

Well. I didn’t have the highest expectations; I mainly wanted to eat ice cream. I didn’t expect much from theme park food.

And truthfully, as much as we enjoyed the little plates of food at the International Festival of the Arts at Epcot, it seemed like they had all been pre-prepared and sitting out all day. So our pate de campagne , though well intended, was pretty dry and falling apart. Most of the dishes were cute and fun but fair-to-average in terms of quality.

I think the highlight of Charlie’s day was when he found out he could get an iced latte with Lucky Charms on top.

“Harmonious” is incredible.

I knew the Magic Kingdom was famous for its fireworks show every night, but I didn’t know that each park has its own show! At Epcot, it’s Harmonious, a light, fireworks, and screen show on the lagoon in the middle of the World Showcase.

Enormous, colorful jets of water leap through the air as Disney medleys play. Fireworks explode in the air and screens mounted in the lagoon play scenes from Disney movies.

Was it good? OH, IT WAS GOOD. I could not believe how good it was. It almost made me cry! How do they do that?!

It is absolutely worth staying until closing so you can see Harmonious. The best place to view the show is at the Italy pavilion or Japan pavilion — but keep in mind these are about as far as you can get from the park exit.

Disney during COVID can be challenging.

Disney World has gone through several iterations of masking: masks required everywhere, masks required inside, and no masks required anywhere. I visited on February 16, 2022, which turned out to be the final day that masks were required inside.

In the early days of the pandemic, more than once I said that Disney World was the last place I wanted to be. But by early 2022, I was okay with visiting. I was fully vaccinated and boosted, the Omicron wave was waning, I was not planning on seeing any immunocompromised people anytime soon, and I was committed to masking indoors and whenever in a packed crowd outdoors. I live in the Czech Republic; we’ve never stopped masking indoors. It was no big deal.

Were there people who flagrantly disregarded the mask rule? Absofuckinglutely! People who would go into the bathrooms without mask. People who would stand in line for food with the collar of their shirt pulled up around their nose. People who would smirk and wait until two minutes into the monorail ride to put a mask on.

All of these people couldn’t resist being an asshole for the sake of being an asshole. And honestly, many anti-maskers have been awful to Disney cast members, hurtling verbal abuse when asked to wear a mask. I suspect that this is why Disney dropped the indoor masking rule: CMs are burned out.

Anything else to know about Disney during COVID? There were no close-up character experiences at the time of my visit. If a mascot appeared, Minnie or Goofy would be on the other side of a hedge, 20 feet away or so, posing for selfies from behind. And there are no parades at this time.

Should you visit Disney during COVID? That’s up to you. If you do go, I recommend being fully vaccinated and boosted, and masking indoors, even though it’s no longer required.

Comparisons to Universal Studios are inevitable.

So, what about Universal Studios, the other major theme park in Orlando? I actually went to Universal with my bud Cailin back in 2017, when she was an ambassador for the theme park and brought me as her guest.

We had a great time, and there are some things that Universal does better than Disney.

Fewer crowds. Universal Studios is less crowded than Disney World, and wait times are much shorter. The only rides where there are significant wait times are the big Harry Potter rides — and you can get around that by rope dropping first thing in the morning, especially if you stay at a Universal resort and can enter early.

Lockers everywhere. Universal has lockers throughout the park, and they are free for the first 30 minutes — so we would frequently stash our things, ride a ride (or in the case of The Mummy, ride it three times), then pick our things up and move on to the next ride. Disney only has lockers at the entrances.

Child swap. If you’re two adults with a big kid and a toddler, one adult can ride with the big kid while the other stays with the toddler in a child swap room, then they can switch so the other adult can ride. It’s a great idea and one I’m surprised doesn’t exist at Disney.

That said…Universal is not a place I could see myself returning to repeatedly. I think I could go back to Disney World a LOT.

How would I plan a future trip to Disney as an adult?

I would love to go back to Disney! Now that I’ve done so much research, I can’t wait to do more Disney!! Next time I visit my mom in Florida, I’d love to go to Animal Kingdom or Hollywood Studios for the day. My sister is a runner and I’d love to cheer her on in a Disney marathon or half marathon.

But say I were planning a full weeklong trip to Disney for adults. For myself, essentially. What would I recommend?

Disney Springs. This area is not part of the parks, but it’s filled with shops and restaurants and bars. If you’re an adult planning a trip to Disney, you should prioritize some time here!

Staying at a Disney resort. The benefits are too good — easy transportation, no parking hassles, and getting to enter the park early. I think I’d choose a Disney hotel close to Disney Springs, like Disney Port Orleans French Quarter. (Their hotel rooms are sized for two adults…and they serve Mickey-shaped beignets!)

Hardcore days at Magic Kingdom and Hollywood Studios. Trying to pack in as much as humanly possible, trying to see ALL OF THE RIDES. Spending the money for Genie Plus and Lightning Lanes, optimizing every free minute.

On and off scheduling. The first day, going nonstop from 9:00 AM to 9:00 PM, exhausted me. I couldn’t do that multiple days in a row. So I think I’d alternate busy days in the parks and chill days. What to do on chill days? Sit by the pool, do Disney Springs things, maybe hit up one of the water parks (Typhoon Lagoon or Blizzard Bay).

Doing a monorail food crawl. I’ve learned that some people like to have one course of a meal at one Disney resort, then hop on the monorail and have the next course at the next resort. Disney actually plans some of these dinners with set courses! Fun.

Beaches & Cream Soda Shop. This ice cream shop at Disney’s Beach Club Resort serves gargantuan sundaes and I WANT I WANT I WANT. On my next trip, for sure!

I absolutely love the logo of the shirt. I chose the long sleeve version and the material is nice and soft. I plan to wear it on our upcoming trip. I might splurge and purchase a short sleeve version. We shall see!

Is Disney Lightning Lane worth it?

Want to save time and ride all the attractions at Walt Disney World and Disneyland while limiting how much time you spend in line? Assuming you're not planning to splurge on a private VIP guide , Disney's Lightning Lanes are the way to go, to get out of the regular lines.

Lightning Lane is Disney's version of the line-skipping service available at most theme parks. With Disney Lightning Lane, you skip the standby line and utilize a much quicker Lightning Lane for most attractions. This could save you hours of waiting in line and ensure you get on more of Disney's most popular rides during your trip.

But, of course, it isn't a one-size-fits-all option. You can pick Lightning Lane Multi Pass, Lightning Lane Single Pass or a combination of both.

Before your next visit to Disney World or Disneyland, use this guide to familiarize yourself with the current Disney Lightning Lane pass options, including how much they cost and how they work. (Spoiler alert: They work differently on each coast.)

Here's everything you need to know to decide if Disney's Lightning Lane service is worth it for you and how to maximize the passes if you buy them.

What is Disney Lightning Lane?

Disney Lightning Lane is a paid service that grants you access to Lightning Lane entrances at select attractions. This service was formerly known as Disney Genie+ but received a rebrand this year with some exciting new features. Lightning Lanes allow you to skip the standby line and free up your time so you can get to more attractions with less waiting throughout the day.

Most attractions are included in the Lightning Lane Multi Pass service, but one or two attractions at each park require a separate Lightning Lane Single Pass purchase to skip the line. It's not necessary to purchase a Lightning Lane Multi Pass to buy a Lightning Lane Single Pass and vice versa, though by combining the two, you are almost guaranteed to get on all your favorite Disney rides during your visit.

Disney may also employ a virtual queue for new or popular attractions, and those may or may not also utilize a Lightning Lane entrance.

Joining a virtual queue is complimentary for all guests, and you can use it with or without Lightning Lanes. You can access all of these services through the My Disney Experience app at Disney World or the Disneyland app at Disneyland.

How much does Disney Lightning Lane cost?

The Lightning Lane Multi Pass and the Lightning Lane Single Pass are separate services and must be purchased separately. The process and pricing are a bit different at Disney World and Disneyland, so let's look at each.

Walt Disney World Lightning Lane pricing

Lightning Lane Multi Pass pricing varies by date and park. The service starts at $15 per person, per day but can reach $39 per person, per day during the busiest seasons, like around Thanksgiving, Christmas and spring break. Of course, it's always possible that those prices will increase in the future.

It's also possible for the Lightning Lane Multi Pass and the Lightning Lane Single Pass to sell out. With the park-specific pricing structure, it's possible for the Lightning Lane Multi Pass to sell out at one park and still be available at another, so you don't totally lose out on the option to skip the line as long as your park touring plan is flexible.

Some parks, like Disney's Animal Kingdom and Epcot, have fewer Lightning Lane-eligible attractions (and generally shorter standby waits) than the Magic Kingdom and Disney's Hollywood Studios. As a result, the Lightning Lane Multi Pass tends to be less expensive at Animal Kingdom and Epcot.

Lightning Lane Single Pass attraction pricing varies by attraction but typically ranges between $7 and $25 per person, per attraction. Each guest can make up to two Lightning Lane Single Pass purchases per day, and they don't have to be for the same park.

Although they are separate services, you can purchase one or both in a single transaction.

Disneyland Lightning Lane pricing

Disneyland's Lightning Lane Multi Pass and Lightning Lane Single Pass pricing vary by day, based on crowd levels and demand.

Like at Disney World, you can purchase a Lightning Lane Multi Pass in advance as an add-on to your Disneyland ticket, but unlike Disney World, you cannot make any prearrival ride selections. Still, prepurchasing a Lightning Lane Multi Pass locks in a price of $30 per person, per day. If you purchase a Lightning Lane Multi Pass on the date of your visit, the starting price is $30, but it can fluctuate on busier days. The highest price on record so far is $35.

As is the case with Disney World, you can expect higher prices for Lightning Lane passes at Disneyland when the parks are busier around the holidays and spring break. It's best to purchase the Lightning Lane Multi Pass ahead of time to take advantage of the $30 base price.

The Lightning Lane Multi Pass at Disneyland includes unlimited PhotoPass digital downloads, which is why the starting price is a bit higher than the equivalent service at Disney World.

Though you can purchase a Lightning Lane Multi Pass ahead of time, you can only purchase a Lightning Lane Single Pass at Disneyland once you are inside the park on the day of your visit. Pricing varies per day and attraction, with prices increasing during busier times. Each guest can make up to two Lightning Lane Single Pass purchases per day.

How do Lightning Lanes work at Disney World?

One of the best things about Lightning Lane passes at Disney World is that you now have the ability to purchase them and plan ahead of time.

Guests staying at Disney Resort hotels, the Walt Disney World Swan, Dolphin or Swan Reserve or Shades of Green can purchase Lightning Lane passes up to seven days in advance of their vacation at 7 a.m. Eastern time for the entire length of their stay (up to 14 days).

Guests with date-based tickets who are not staying in an official Disney Resort hotel can plan up to three days in advance for the length of their ticket, beginning at 7 a.m. Eastern time.

Guests with annual passes or special ticket types who don't have a Disney hotel stay can plan one day at a time, up to three days before their visit.

If you are only visiting one park per day, you will want to purchase a Lightning Lane Multi Pass for whichever park you plan to visit each day and make your prearrival ride selections for that park.

If you plan to park hop, you will want to purchase a Lightning Lane Multi Pass and make your initial ride selections for the first park you plan to visit. On the day of your visit, the system will recognize that you have Park Hopper tickets and will allow you to make subsequent ride selections for any park (subject to availability).

To make your purchase, open the My Disney Experience app. You should see a prompt to purchase a Lighting Lane pass on the home screen, but you can also click the hamburger menu in the bottom right corner to see a button that says "Lightning Lane Passes."

From there, you will choose the date of your visit. The next screen will show you availability and pricing for Lightning Lane Multi Pass and Lightning Lane Single Pass at each park. Select the park where you'd like to purchase a Lightning Lane Multi Pass. At this time, you can also make up to two Lightning Lane Single Pass selections for any park. You are able to view attraction availability and pricing without actually making a purchase.

You will then be prompted to choose your party. If you or someone in your party isn't eligible, you'll see a message explaining why. If you have your tickets and are within your booking window, this shouldn't be an issue.

After selecting your party, you will choose your rides. The Magic Kingdom, Epcot and Disney's Hollywood Studios allow you to choose one Tier 1 attraction and two Tier 2 attractions. For example, rides like Space Mountain, Tiana's Bayou Adventure and Big Thunder Mountain Railroad are Tier 1 attractions, while rides such as Dumbo the Flying Elephant and The Many Adventures of Winnie the Pooh are Tier 2 attractions. At Disney's Animal Kingdom, there is no tier system.

Even though you get to choose your return window, the system will automatically assign you a return time. You will have up to five minutes on this screen to modify your return times if you want to switch things around.

You will then be taken to a payment screen, where you can enter your card information and complete your purchase.

If you are purchasing for multiple days, just wash, rinse and repeat the above steps. If you are purchasing for multiple days at once, your best bet is to purchase your Magic Kingdom and Hollywood Studios days first so you can make those selections sooner, as they tend to run out the quickest. You're likely to have the best attraction availability for the last day of your trip, so you might want to start there when you make selections to have the best odds of locking in the hottest rides.

You can continue to modify your ride selections and return times in the My Disney Experience app leading up to and during your visit. Lightning Lanes are nonrefundable, but you can modify the date and park for Lightning Lane Multi Pass or the attraction for Lightning Lane Single Pass if your plans change. If the cost is higher than what you originally paid, you will be responsible for the difference. If it is less, you will not receive any type of refund.

On the day of your visit, you can book additional attractions throughout the day each time you tap into an attraction using one of your Lightning Lane Multi Pass selections.

Another great feature of this system is that once you begin making day-of selections, the ride tier system no longer applies. You can make new ride selections or modify existing ones for any ride and return time at any park if you are park hopping (subject to availability). This means that after you use your first Lightning Lane of the day, you could modify your second or third attractions to Tier 1 attractions, even if they were initially Tier 2 attractions.

How do Lightning Lanes work at Disneyland?

At Disneyland, you can purchase a Lightning Lane Multi Pass ahead of time as a vacation add-on or after you enter the park each day.

You must purchase the service for each member of your party who plans to use it (except for children 2 and under), and each person must have a valid ticket and theme park reservation. Regardless of when you make your purchase, you can make your first Lightning Lane ride selection upon entering the park.

When you make a Lightning Lane reservation, you are given an hourlong arrival window when you can experience your selected attraction. When the window opens, signaling it's time to ride, you can skip the standby queue and access the attraction via the Lightning Lane.

You can make subsequent selections after you redeem one or when two hours have passed from your last selection, whichever comes first. You can modify Lightning Lane selections if you want to change the attraction or number of people in your party who will accompany you to the attraction.

It's possible to move through several attractions very quickly as long as the return times are available fairly soon after you book them. You can keep doing this grab-it-and-use-it strategy as long as Lightning Lane windows show immediate or near-term availability.

The other strategy you can employ is to stack your Lightning Lanes for later in the day. If the app is only displaying return windows that are many hours later, you can start stacking reservations for later and add new reservations every two hours. You will have to use standby lines or separately purchased individual Lightning Lanes early in the day to apply this strategy.

Which rides accept Disney Lightning Lane passes?

Many rides at Walt Disney World and Disneyland are included with the Lightning Lane Multi Pass. This list may change over time, especially when a new attraction opens. Still, you can always see the latest ride list — including which rides require a separate individual Lightning Lane purchase — on the official Lightning Lane pages for Disney World and Disneyland .

Can you have fun at Disney without Lightning Lane passes?

There are situations where purchasing Lightning Lane passes may not be necessary for your day.

Are you planning a day of eating and drinking around the world at Epcot? Do you prefer to stroll around the parks while you take photos and watch passersby? Do you hate being on your phone or tied to a schedule and prefer to let the day take you wherever it may? Lightning Lanes won't help you with any of that, though you can use the free Disney Genie service in the app to mobile order a cocktail or find the rides with the shortest lines.

Disney Genie helps optimize your day by suggesting what to do in which order, displaying current and predicted future wait times, placing mobile food orders, helping you navigate the parks with an interactive map and more. You can access the free Disney Genie service through the "My Day" link on the app's homepage or by clicking "Today's Plans" from the hamburger menu.

If budget is a concern, consider only purchasing a Lightning Lane Single Pass for the rides you just can't miss and utilizing other strategies like early entry for shorter waits on other rides. In our experience, wait times grow as the day wears on, so the earlier you get started, the better. Sometimes, especially on days the park is open later, the same can be true toward the end of the evening.

You can also utilize virtual queues for Disney's newest rides, which are free for all guests to use. This can help you get on top-tier attractions without paying extra money. You need to be ready to grab those virtual queues right at 7 a.m. on the dot — we recommend using the world clock and starting to hit refresh as fast as you can as the seconds draw close to 7 a.m. The same is true again at 1 p.m. if you want to try to grab a virtual queue for whatever park you are in at that time.

In short, yes, Disney's Lightning Lanes can absolutely be worth it if you want to ride as many rides as possible in a day with as little time in line as possible. But there are a few things you need to know if you want to maximize the money you spend on Lightning Lanes.

You need to purchase a Lightning Lane Multi Pass and make your ride selections as soon as you can for the best availability. This ensures you have access to the most Lightning Lanes possible. If you purchase the service later in the day, it won't be as valuable. Even if you are booking seven days in advance, some of the top attractions, such as Tiana's Bayou Adventure, may already be unavailable.

You also want to maximize other expert-level Disney strategies to ensure you get on as many rides as possible. As the saying goes, the early bird gets the worm. If you arrive before the gates open for the day, you can be near the front of the group and knock out some high-demand attractions before the lines get long without using Lightning Lanes. Standby lines tend to be shorter during the first hour after the park opens.

It's also worth mentioning that certain attractions may run out of Lightning Lane availability before the park closes for the day. The earlier you can make your Lightning Lane reservations, the better (even if they are for later in the day).

Additionally, if you don't see what you want when it comes time to grab your next Lightning Lane, the best advice is to refresh, refresh and refresh some more within the app. This is true for making new selections and modifying current ones. New Lightning Lane reservations become available either when other groups cancel or as Disney periodically loads more throughout the day. So, the more persistent you are with refreshing the options in the app, the more options you will eventually have.

Bottom line

Whether you find value in Lightning Lanes depends on the type of Disney World or Disneyland vacation you are planning.

For most guests who want to experience as many attractions as possible during their Disney trip, Lightning Lane passes are worth the added cost to avoid spending hours waiting in line. There are plenty of ways to save money at Disney so that you can fit Lightning Lane into your budget and have the most magical vacation possible.

This Disney restaurant marked a Michelin first: What to expect at Victoria & Albert's

Picture a Michelin-starred restaurant . Places like The French Laundry in California’s Napa Valley or Jean-Georges in New York may come to mind, but don’t forget Walt Disney World.  

This spring, Victoria & Albert’s at Disney’s Grand Floridian Resort & Spa became the first restaurant owned and operated by a U.S. theme park to be awarded a coveted Michelin star, according to The Walt Disney Company. 

"A lot of times people think about Mickey Mouse ice cream bars, which I had as a little boy with my grandparents coming here, and turkey legs, which are fun and amazing, but there's this great gastronomic opportunity that we're, as chefs here at Walt Disney World, striving to achieve,” said Chef Matthew Sowers , chef de cuisine at Victoria & Albert’s. 

Here’s what guests can expect from the renowned restaurant:

Does Victoria and Albert's have a Michelin star? 

Yes. So does Capa at the Four Seasons Resort Orlando, which is also at Disney World but neither owned nor operated by Disney. 

“Michelin's inspectors are passionate about highlighting worthwhile dining experiences, regardless of location or setting,” Michelin Guide's chief inspector for North America said in a statement, maintaining anonymity for reviews. “ ’Starred’ restaurants are always visited several times by different inspectors to ensure consistent quality and the satisfaction of our five criteria ,” which are all related to cooking. 

Stars are awarded solely on food, but Victoria & Albert’s longtime maître d’hôtel Israel Pérez was also honored with the 2024 Michelin Guide Florida Service Award.  

“The inspection team found the service to be excellent, with friendly and attentive servers who were very polished and well-informed on the menu,” Michelin said. “They feel the service experience is well-orchestrated without feeling stiff or rehearsed.” 

Perez, who started at the Grand Floridian as a busboy 36 years ago, called the honor a dream come true. 

“It's just something that you've been working on your entire life without even knowing that you're working for it,” he said, sharing credit with the entire staff.

What makes Victoria & Albert’s special?  

There is only one seating each night, so every guest is special, and every meal is an event. 

“We memorize names ahead of people coming in,” Perez said, noting that roughly 80% of the restaurant's guests are first-timers and 20% are repeat diners. “We do have a way to just ask questions ahead of your visit to make sure that your experience is not a transaction, that we know who you are, that we greet you, that we make you feel comfortable.” 

He said the restaurant has the highest ratio of servers to guests on the property, with one server to every four guests in the Dining Room. 

“There's a list of about 200 different little rules that we go by that you’ll probably never notice unless you ask us about it,” he added. “We always talk about not being intrusive, but the servers really can share so many stories about food, about wine. They know every single ingredient.”  

Sowers gets excited when different ingredients come in season, like ramps in the spring and white truffles in winter.  

“We're always trying to allow for the ingredients to drive the menu,” the chef said. He changes the menu roughly every three months. “They’re a moment in time that you capture and you showcase that to the guests that maybe haven't had an opportunity to enjoy that before.” 

How to try new foods 

Knowing that some flavors may be unfamiliar, Sowers said the restaurant tries to be approachable, particularly at the start of a meal.  

“Once we're able to kind of gain their trust, they're going to be more receptive to some of the more exotic ingredients that we may be inspired using later,” he said. Michelin described Sowers’ cuisine as contemporary with “influences spanning from Asia to the Nordics.” 

Sharing stories also helps guests connect. 

Introducing a mocktail called La Vie en Rose, chef Gabriella Syvaniemi, who crafts the restaurant’s zero-proof offerings, said, “La Vie on Rose means to see the world through rose-colored glasses and to live life with positivity. My grandma used to farm rhubarb and she loved roses, so this kind of stemmed from that." Cold-pressed rhubarb juice and rose water are among the pink drink's ingredients.

The restaurant guides guests on culinary adventures while respecting dietary wants and needs. 

“Whether it’s in a vegan menu or whether it's someone who only wants to do seafood or someone that doesn't want to do seafood, we're able to capture a dining experience that's multiple courses where we can tailor it to what their sensibilities are,” Sowers said. 

How much does dinner cost at Victoria and Albert's? 

Victoria & Albert’s is only open for dinner. Prices vary depending on the dining venue and experience. There are three venues within the restaurant, each serving a prix-fixe menu with multiple tasting courses. 

The prix-fixe menu starts at $295 per guest in the main Dining Room, $375 in the more intimate Queen Victoria Room, and $425 at the exclusive Chef’s Table, where guests spend the evening interacting with chefs beside the bustling kitchen.  

“Sometimes they're really engaging and wanting to know every little thing. We're to shepherd them through the experience,” Sowers said. Only one party of up to six guests may partake in the Chef’s Table each night. 

Wine pairings and zero-proof pairings cost extra. Guests can also pair courses with different waters from around the world, from the restaurant's water menu. 

Does Victoria and Albert's have a dress code? 

Yes. Its website states: “Victoria & Albert’s is an exquisite and intimate upscale dining experience and the culinary crown jewel of Walt Disney World Resort. Guests are expected to dress accordingly in semi-formal/formal attire that respects the restaurant’s elegant and opulent aesthetic.” 

What is the minimum age for Victoria and Albert's? 

The restaurant welcomes guests 10 years old and older. 

What park is Victoria and Albert’s in? 

Victoria & Albert’s is not located in a theme park but inside the Victorian-inspired Grand Floridian Resort & Spa. The restaurant is named after Britain’s Queen Victoria and her husband, Prince Albert.

The restaurant and resort are a short monorail or ferry ride from Magic Kingdom. Valet parking is also available and complimentary with dining reservations at Victoria & Albert’s.

How far in advance can you book Victoria and Albert's? 

Reservations open 60 days in advance. Guests staying at Disney’s resort hotels can book reservations for their entire vacation window, up to 10 days, starting at 60 days before their arrival.  

Guests should note the Chef’s Table may only be booked by phone by calling Victoria & Albert’s directly at (407) 939-3862. The Dining Room and Queen Victoria Room may be booked through the My Disney Experiences app . 

Additionally, guests with food allergies are asked to alert the restaurant at least 24 hours in advance so chefs can modify menus accordingly. 

“If you have an allergy that looks as simple as something like onions, there might be onions in almost every sauce,” Perez said.  

How long is a meal at Victoria and Albert's? 

Guests should expect to spend around three hours on the tasting menu at Victoria and Albert’s, though they are welcome to stay longer. 

“A few days ago, the Chef’s Table for example, they were with us for seven hours,” Perez said. That occasion was a bit unusual, with one of the restaurant’s regular guests celebrating a milestone anniversary. “We are always going to follow your timing.”

What’s next for Victoria & Albert’s? 

The restaurant isn’t resting on its laurels. 

“It is personal. It is our work. We really strive to have craftsmanship in what we do and we put ourselves into the work,” Sowers said. “Day after day, try to get 1% better and make sure that that results in a way where guests can come back year over year and watch us continue to evolve and continue to get better and grow.” 

Victoria & Albert’s has been consistently named a AAA Five Diamond Award restaurant and a Forbes Travel Guide Five Star establishment.

The mpox strain spreading now is different from the one in 2022: Here's what to know

The World Health Organization’s decision to declare mpox a global public health emergency for the second time in two years may seem like déjà vu — but there are key differences between the strain that’s causing international concern now and the one that spread in 2022.

Mpox, formerly known as monkeypox, is a viral infection characterized by painful lesions. It’s spread by direct contact with an infected person, animal or contaminated items like clothing or bedding.

The virus is classified into two distinct groups: clade I and clade II. 

Clade II was responsible for the 2022 outbreak, which has led to around 100,000 cases worldwide . 

But now, a version of clade I has spread internationally. The outbreak started in January 2023 in the Democratic Republic of Congo, and has since reached 12 other countries in the region.

On Thursday, Sweden confirmed the first known infection of clade I outside Africa , though Swedish health officials said the person was infected while spending time in Africa. Health authorities in Pakistan also confirmed a case of mpox on Friday but have not identified the strain yet. 

Clade I is more transmissible than clade II and capable of being more severe, so infectious disease experts are concerned about further international spread.

“We should have learned a lesson from 2022 that an infection anywhere is potentially an infection everywhere,” said Anne Rimoin, an epidemiology professor at the University of California, Los Angeles Fielding School of Public Health.

How does this version of mpox spread?

Mpox has historically spread in a few ways. The first is through close, personal contact with an infected person, such as skin-to-skin contact with rashes or with saliva or mucus. The second is via contact with contaminated materials. And the third is contact with infected animals: hunting, trapping or cooking them, touching sick rodents or getting bitten or scratched. 

In 2022, the version of clade II that spread globally, dubbed clade IIb, was passed primarily through sexual contact, particularly among men who have sex with men.

In the Democratic Republic of Congo recently, clade Ib has also been spreading through sexual contact among female sex workers and men who have sex with men. Research that hasn’t yet been published or peer reviewed linked an outbreak in an eastern mining town in Congo to professional sex work in bars.

But that’s not the only way the virus is being transmitted. Dr. Stuart Isaacs, an associate professor of medicine at the University of Pennsylvania, said much of the spread of clade I could be due to exposure to animals and transmission within households, but limited surveillance in the regions where the virus is make it difficult to know for sure. 

Isaacs said there’s early evidence that clade Ib has certain “properties that are allowing it to spread more readily person to person.”

How severe are the recent cases?

In the past, outbreaks of clade I have been deadlier than clade 2, killing up to 10% of people who got sick . But more recent outbreaks have had lower death rates. Out of an estimated 22,000 cases in this outbreak in Congo , more than 1,200 people have died — which puts the fatality rate at just above 5%. 

By comparison, clade II outbreaks in Africa have generally had a mortality rate of around 1%, and just 0.2% of cases linked to the 2022 global outbreak were fatal.

Rimoin said the disease’s severity “can have less to do with the actual clade and more to do with route of transmission, the immune system of the individual, the source of the infection.” 

The threat in the U.S. could be milder than in Africa, according to Marc Siegel, an associate professor of medicine at the George Washington School of Medicine and Health Sciences.

“The underlying health conditions of the population in the DRC are probably contributing to the current case fatality rate,” he said, using the acronym for the Democratic Republic of Congo. “With less malnutrition and better access to health care resources, I would imagine that the case fatality rate will not be as high as we’re seeing in the DRC.”

Vaccines for mpox are also widely available in the U.S., following a major rollout effort in 2022. Two doses of the mpox vaccine or a previous clade II infection should protect against severe illness from clade I, the Department of Health and Human Service said Wednesday.

Do mpox symptoms differ between the clades?

Symptoms of the two mpox clades can be difficult to distinguish from each other.

The illness generally starts with a rash that progresses to small bumps on the skin, followed by blisters that fill with whitish fluid — a hallmark of the disease — and eventually scab over. People may also experience a fever, headache, muscle aches, back pain, low energy and swollen lymph nodes.

These symptoms often disappear on their own within a few weeks. But in severe cases, people may develop larger, more widespread lesions, secondary bacterial infections, pneumonia, heart inflammation or swelling of the brain. Immunocompromised people may develop atypical symptoms and have a greater risk of hospitalization and death. 

Historically, mpox lesions have tended to appear on the face, chest, palms of the hands and the soles of the feet. But during the 2022 outbreak, people frequently developed lesions around the genital and anal region or inside the mouth and throat, presumably because of how the virus was spreading at the time . The lesions were also fewer in number and less pronounced overall.

Some cases of this nature have also been detected in the current outbreak in Congo. 

“There is talk that there are more people that have lesions around the genitals this time around than previous clade I outbreaks,” said Amira Albert Roess, a professor of global health and epidemiology at George Mason University. “It’s going to take us some time to really understand what may be going on here.”
