Bangalore Palace

In the technology-driven, futuristic Silicon Valley of India, monuments of historical significance boasting of a glorious past are also abundant. The historical heritage of the city is so magnificent and eminent that it rises to prominence on its own. One such landmark is the Tudor style Bangalore Palace. The Palace is a perfect representation of the lavishness and splendour with which India's most resilient dynasties ruled. Famous for its opulent architecture and amusement activities, the Palace is visited by several visitors every day. The colossal Palace boasts of massive courtyards, bright interiors, kingly grounds, splendid spiral staircases, stately towers and a luscious garden in a proud display of posh regality.Anyone who admires classic architecture and artistry would be delighted to experience it first hand at this Palace. It also houses an amusement park in its enclave to the delight of many younger visitors. Having been a private residence to the Wodeyar family, Bangalore palace offers a linear perspective into the royal life of the forepassed era. It is plush with a vibrant and varied collection of ancient royal artefacts, paraphernalia, hunting trophies and family photos. The Palace houses some of the most famous paintings of the 19th Century, including the works of one of India's most celebrated artists Raja Ravi Verma. The Palace grounds very often become venues for concerts and festivals. World-renowned artists like Enrique and Guns N' Roses have graced the palace grounds with their talent and presence. The Palace hence combines the richness and luxury of royal history with the vivacious and exuberant demeanour of the youth. Bangalore Palace HistoryOriginally a property of Reverend J Garrett, the principal of a school in the cantonment town at that time, the area where the Palace is now located was purchased from him by the British Guardians of Maharaja Chamarajendra Wadiyar for 40,000 rupees. The construction of the palace began in the year 1874. Mr John Cameron of Lalbagh was assigned the task of landscaping Palace along with its surroundings. The complete construction of the palace was completed in the year, 1878.The Palace saw many additions and modifications in its architecture in subsequent years. Maharaja Jayachamaraja Wadiyar added a few portions like the twin external staircase, the platform for musicians etc. outside the Durbar Hall. In 1970, HH Jayachamarajendra Wodeyar transferred ownership of the property to two companies, Chamundi Hotels and Shree Venkateshwara Real Estate Enterprises. However, this transaction was later shown to be fraudulent. A legal battle followed between this deal and Jayachamarajendra's son, Srikanta Datta. The five sisters of Srikanta Datta are now in possession of sections of the 28 acres of the Palace. In the year 1990 Srikant Datta finally compromised with the Chamaraju group and got back his part of the property including the main Palace except for 45 acres that the Chamaraju group still retains. Architecture:The Palace showcases exquisite wooden interiors surrounded by pristine walls. The Palace is enclosed within beautiful gardens. The architecture is a medley of Tudor style and Scottish style and has gothic undertones. A lot of physical artefacts inside are of British origin. It is said that the architecture of this building is inspired by that of the Windsor Castle and other architectural marvels of England and Normandy. The most prominent features of the Palace like the two-level granite structure of the fortified towers and turreted parapets take direct inspiration from the Tudor building styles. The entrance is decorated with grand Roman arches. The exterior of the building is covered in eccentric shapes and angles. The exterior walls are of a blushing cinnabar shade that gives the building a quaint Victorian vibe. The floor of the open courtyard of the Palace is adorned with granite seats covered with azure ceramic tiles. The ground floor also contains a beautifully decorated ballroom. The first floor of the Palace has a distinct chamber known as the Durbar Hall attached to an ornate staircase. This hall is famous for the enormous elephant head that is mounted in it and its gothic style tinted glass windows.

“Field trips are the bridges between classroom walls and the vast lessons of history. They transform ancient stories into vivid lessons for the mind and the heart.” The primary aim of the field trip to Bangalore Palace was to provide students with a real-world connection to their studies in history, art, architecture and culture, enabling them to witness the grandeur of historical architecture and understand the lifestyle of the royal Wodeyar family. Bangalore Palace, an epitome of majestic beauty located in the heart of Bengaluru within the Palace Gardens, stood as a testament to the city’s historical and architectural richness. Renowned for its breathtaking architecture and exquisite wooden carvings, the palace offered a glimpse into the regal opulence preserved from the era of the Wodeyar’s. Students explored the palace’s architectural style, noting the fusion of Tudor and Scottish Gothic elements, which sparked discussions about historical architectural practices and influences. The tour provided the students a glimpse into the royal lifestyle and customs of the time. The trip enhanced their understanding of history beyond textbooks, encouraging curiosity and fostering a sense of national pride and also inspired them to learn more about their heritage.

What is a field trip?

A field trip is basically a journey or an excursion to a new place which different from the usual environment. It is defined as a visit to an outside area from the normal classroom led by teachers for firsthand observation.

Importance of Educational Field Trips for School Students

It has been observed that information that is seen in real life is easier to understand and remember than information that is read in a textbook. It is far preferable to learn anything in person rather than merely from a book. Practical learning also extends our mental images and leaves a lasting effect. For instance, a trip to a farm will enable kids to comprehend the entire farming process and how it links to the food they consume every day.

Additionally, educational field excursions encourage social and emotional growth in addition to learning in class. These excursions provide kids the chance to practise social skills including leadership, cooperation, and communication. They promote more peer interaction, teach students how to handle difficult problems through cooperation, and aid in the formation of bonds.

Let’s take a look at some of the best educational field trips for school students in India to promote learning.

School Trips

Learning takes place everywhere. With our educational visits and trips, your child enhances their learning experience

Field trips and expeditions are an integral part of our school’s IB based curriculum. They are an extension of learning engagements of concepts that enables your child to gain experiential learning beyond their classrooms and facilitate efficient lifelong learnings as well. These are the best educational instruments that allow students to interact with people and places that they are not normally exposed to during school hours. We, at Oakridge International School, Bengaluru, provide a multi-faceted educational experience through these local and global fieldtrips/expeditions.

Whilst each trip has a subject-related focus, we believe it is important not to miss an opportunity. In every trip, we weave in elements of your destination’s geography, history, politics, religion, society, economy, science and environment. We use these to bridge the gaps between learning and hands on experience. These are educational as well as entertaining.

The school has always believed in the positive effects of experiential learning and our expeditions are designed to broaden our students’ perspectives and expose them to different cultures, people and ideas. Your child will have access to global, regional and local opportunities. Expeditions at Nord Anglia Education challenge your child to take their learnings outside the classroom and open their eyes to the world around them.

Recently our students of the Middle Years Programme went to watch the movie “Mission Mangal” to learn more about the life of scientists at the Indian Space Research Organisation who were responsible for the Mars Orbiter Mission, India’s first interplanetary expedition and therefore they connected very well with their unit ‘Space and Earth Science’.

The result of these activities is an educational experience of unrivalled impact and an adventure that expands global horizons. In expeditions – travelling to an entirely new part of the world pushes us outside our comfort zones, both mentally and physically. This is where the magic happens. When students are given an opportunity to shine outside of the classroom. These help students to gain a better understanding of topics, builds open mindedness, cultural understanding and tolerance.

Through these activities, students develop knowledge, skills, values and attitudes of citizens to lead productive lives, make informed decisions and assume active roles locally and globally while facing and resolving global challenges. These experiential learnings are the best tools that we can use to provide every students with real –world experiences and make concepts more memorable.

Bengaluru Then and Now – Field Trip for Grade 2 – Ekya School JP Nagar

  • Bengaluru Then and Now – Field Trip for Grade 2 – Ekya School JP Nagar

Our Schools

Bengaluru also known as the Garden city of India is blessed with many sightseeing options, which include architectural marvels, historical significance, and spots of unparalleled natural beauty. Some of the main attractions are Vidhana Soudha, Bengaluru Palace, Cubbon Park, and Visvesvaraya Museum.

field trip places for students in bangalore

The students of Grade 2 as part of outbound learning at Ekya had an opportunity to visit some of the main attraction in Bangalore and compare the changes in them over the years. This field trip was planned for the students to get a better understanding of the Unit ‘past in the present’ in their social science curriculum. Our teachers shared the old pictures of Brigade road, Vidhana Soudha, and other attractions in Bengaluru with students and they observed what these places looked like in the past from old pictures.

First, they visited The Bangalore Palace, an architectural beauty that speaks volumes on the history  of the city. Its European architecture is a reminder of the colonial legacy of the town while its opulence also showcases the riches of the local kings. The Palace Grounds around it is a famed venue for international music concerts and is significant for Bangalore’s contemporary culture.

The students proceeded to Cubbon Park which is in the heart of the city. The park is one of the major attractions in the city. Cubbon Park stretches over a larger area which encompasses many government buildings like Vidhana Soudha, heritage centers and historical monuments.

Last but not least was the Visvesvaraya Industrial and Technological Museum. The children got immersed in Science and were engrossed with the contraptions of yesteryear like a Decca gramophone, a vintage microphone, and a steam engine. They even saw a replica of the Wright Brothers Flyer Kitty Hawk along with Flyer Simulator proving immersive and entertaining for the children.

To conclude, it was a fun learning experience for the children. They got to see how the city has changed, and by how much. They also realized how important these landmarks were in our city Bengaluru, and that we should preserve them. They learned that it was important to document information, which is the premise of social science.

The Power of Learning with Intent: A Guide to Purposeful Education

In a world brimming with information, the art of learning has evolved beyond the mere acquisition of facts. Learning with intent, a deliberate approach to education emphasises quality over quantity, depth over breadth, and purpose over passive absorption. It’s about cultivating a mindset that transforms knowledge into meaningful action and empowers individuals to navigate the complexities of the modern age effectively.

At its core, learning with intent involves setting clear objectives and actively engaging with the subject matter. Whether exploring a new language, delving into scientific principles, or honing a creative skill, intentionality infuses each learning endeavour with purpose and direction. As Albert Einstein aptly said, "The only source of knowledge is experience." This quote amplifies the importance of active participation and hands-on learning, highlighting that true understanding arises from deliberate engagement with the material.

Furthermore, engaging actively with the material is paramount. Embrace challenges and embrace mistakes as opportunities for growth. This proactive approach not only deepens your understanding but also cultivates critical thinking and problem-solving skills essential for success in any field.

Moreover, learning with intent emphasises relevance and applicability. Seek out opportunities to apply newfound knowledge in real-world scenarios, bridging the gap between theory and practice. By contextualising learning within your personal or professional sphere, you enhance its significance and utility, making it more likely to stick.

In conclusion, learning with intent is a transformative approach that transcends traditional notions of education. By setting clear objectives, engaging actively, prioritising relevance, and fostering a growth mindset, individuals can harness the full potential of learning to achieve their goals and thrive in an ever-changing world. So, embark on your learning journey with purpose, and let each lesson propel you towards a brighter, more fulfilling future.

Gadget-free Summer Break

With summer vacation around, I urge parents to explore various ways to facilitate children to make healthy choices during their vacation time.

Last week, when we asked our Early Years to visualise their characters and create a story, most of them came up with stories about ghosts and monsters attacking others.  When we had conversations about what gave them this idea, we understood that these story ideas emanated from their online games. While gaming per se develops specific skills and requires focus, it also stifles the imagination of young children. Since it is visually appealing, children tend to remember those images in their heads all the time.

I often see parents providing very young children (1 year to 3 year olds)  with gadgets as the means to keep children engaged and entertained. I see children watching phones in the waiting areas of clinics, hospitals, school lobbies and banks.

This brings us to a fundamental question “ Should children be engaged by parents all the time?” Not necessarily. What is likely to happen if children were not handed over gadgets at the waiting lounges? What would they do? Some of them may cry, some may throw a loud tantrum, and some may crib. If parents show resilience and allow children to settle down themselves, they will soon find ways to keep themselves engaged. Likewise, during summer vacation. What if this is a “no gadget” vacation and parents do not take up the responsibility to engage their children? What would children do? How can parents show resilience here and facilitate children to make healthy choices? I leave the readers with this thought for this summer vacation.

The Eye of the Storm

In the hushed embrace of an Indian evening, our journey began, a symphony of anticipation orchestrated by the hum of jet engines and the flutter of boarding passes. The promise of adventure beckoned from distant shores as we boarded our flight bound for the United Kingdom, our hearts aflutter with dreams of far-off lands and newfound horizons. But as we soared through the velvet sky, a foreboding shadow loomed on the horizon, a harbinger of the chaos that was soon to unfold. In the blink of an eye, the tranquil serenity of our airborne sanctuary was shattered by a deafening crack, a burst of purple lightning that danced across the heavens with an otherworldly fervour. The air crackled with electricity as the plane shuddered beneath the force of the storm, its metal frame quivering in defiance against the tempestuous onslaught. And then, in a heart-stopping moment of sheer terror, the heavens unleashed their fury upon us, casting our fragile vessel into a maelstrom of chaos and uncertainty. The sky darkened to a shade of ominous charcoal as the winds howled with a primal ferocity, tearing at the wings of our faltering craft with savage intent. The cabin was awash with panicked cries and frantic prayers as we clung to our seats with white-knuckled desperation, each passing moment stretching into eternity.

And then, as if mocking our feeble attempts at control, the plane tilted almost 180 degrees, its nose plummeting towards the earth with a sickening lurch. Time seemed to stand still as we hurtled towards the ground, our fate hanging in the balance as the world spun wildly out of control. But just when all hope seemed lost, a glimmer of salvation emerged from the chaos, a beacon of light amidst the encroaching darkness. With a mighty roar, the engines surged to life once more, their thunderous symphony drowning out the cacophony of the storm as we clawed our way back from the brink of oblivion. As the storm clouds parted and the sun cast its golden rays upon the horizon, we emerged battered but unbroken, our spirits buoyed by the triumph of the human spirit in the face of adversity. And though our journey had been fraught with peril and uncertainty, we emerged from the crucible of the skies stronger and more resilient than ever before. For in the crucible of adversity, we discovered the true measure of our strength, our courage, and our unwavering determination to defy the odds and chart our course through the tempestuous seas of life. As we touched down on solid ground once more, I couldn't help but marvel at the beauty of the world around us, a testament to the indomitable spirit of the human soul.

Field trip to meg centre at ulsoor, bangalore.

VKIDS organized a visit to Army Cantonment recently, as a part of its co- curricular activities. This field trip gave children their share of amazing moments to cherish forever. They learned more about an Army cantonment and had a fun time visiting the relatively different aesthetics of the cantonment. They were taken to MEG museum where they witnessed many war equipments, clothing and medals etc. Teachers also took them to bomb/mine defusing training area. They even witnessed the Afghan soldiers who have come to India for taking the training from MEG centre. Teachers also explained them about the vital role, the MEG centre plays in the armed forces. It was a wonderful experience for learning and exploring new horizons of general knowledge for both children and teachers. The visit’s success could really be measured by the deep interest and enthusiasm shown by the students and it was refreshing and promising to see some of them even pledging to take up a career in the armed forces

VKIDS field trip to helipad

Field trips are always a fine way to broaden the minds of the students and it helps to provide them more knowledge in different fields .On 13th September our tiny little stars of nursery were taken to helipad as a part of field trip. Children got excited as they could see the helicopter from such a close distance. They were also shown the interior of a helicopter. It is everyone’s childhood wish to fly and helicopter and aero planes are the inventions that made that dream a possibility. To see a helicopter from such a tender age really inspires them to aspire for a career in it, in psychological sense. Children had great time watching the helicopters and the place and opined that it was great learning experience for them.

Pre Primary Field Trip to ECC Garden Whitefield

It was a sunny day in ECC Garden and children were on cloud nine once they reached the garden because it was a very beautiful place where cute bunnies were playing. Teachers who accompanied the students supervised the whole program and took care of them. After playing for a while, kindergarten kids had some great time relaxing under the cool shadows of trees. In the garden, teachers made the kids observe various types of trees and flowers. Among all those good things out there in the garden, Rabbits were the biggest attraction for the kids.

A stellar trip to the planetarium by Vydehi School of Excellence

A trip to planetarium is always a fun ride for children, who generally are so keen to explore the world and it’s magic. Structured with great architectural brilliance and a giant screen, a planetarium always makes everyone feel like ‘soap opera stars’. Interestingly, "Vydehi School of Excellence" made their second field trip of the year to the famous Jawaharlal Nehru Planetarium on 23rd August. Both the children and teachers were of the same opinion that the time spent in the planetarium was frolicking fun. “Vydehi School of Excellence” has always tried to unleash the true potential of every student by guiding them through creative, non-conventional yet disciplined path and this field trip was just one of those ideas that nourish their world of imagination. The students were on a thrill ride when they saw the planets and the stars popping up on the giant screen of the planetarium. It was a magic world for them!

Jawaharlal Nehru Planetarium is one of the famous planetariums in India and is famed for its technical finesse. Planetarium is one of the best ways to introduce science to kids and instil scientific curiosity in them. The trip on 23rd August helped the children of "Vydehi School" to keep pace with what they study in their science books. Before getting into the planetarium, children were guided to a park where they were induced into fun activities and games by teacher. There, they observed "the rolling cylinders" which demonstrate a simple scientific fact. Two cylinders of the same size were allowed to roll down from the top of the incline and the solid one finishes first while the lighter one finishes later. Teachers explained the scientific truth behind it and kids were astonished to know it! It was a peaceful atmosphere out there in the park as children were having a great time, ‘swinging in the park’!

Children saw the medium-sized flex boards that were on the planetarium wall. Even though they were self explanatory, children asked the teachers to enlighten them on those posters. Their design, with pictures of planets on it might have triggered this curiosity in children. Teachers effectively explained that they were about Asteroids and dwarf planets- two small dots in the 'mystery map' of space science. Children were amazed to know that asteroids are tiny rocky worlds, spinning around the sun. Teachers believe that such information induced rich imagination in children. "Vydehi School of Excellence" gives great importance to the imaginative potential of children. On the whole, the trip to planetarium was proved very successful, imaginative and truly educational, for both children and teachers.
