12/1 Carnival Magic - Excursions for Amber Cove, Grand Turk

By divadream , November 25, 2019 in Carnival Cruise Lines

Recommended Posts

Cool Cruiser

Hi all! My boyfriend and I are going on the Carnival Magic this coming weekend (Dec 1-7) to Nassau (Bahamas), Amber Cove (DR), and Grand Turk (Turks & Caicos). It’s my fifth cruise but has been several years while it’s his first.

We are planning on going to Atlantis for the Nassau stop but are having trouble navigating all the offerings in Amber Cove and Grand Turk. He would love to do an off-road driving excursion (preferably without mud).

Any suggestions would be highly appreciated! Should we book through Carnival or is it more discounted elsewhere online? Thanks  🙂

If you’re interested in the waterfalls in DR there’s an opportunity to price match match the $89pp and get $33pp OBC. I don’t know if it’s too late to apply for a price match or not.

Thanks

Welcome to Cruise Critic. I would check out the Ports of Call section.

Thank you! How do you price match?

Copying this over from my blog. The price match form is  https://www.carnival.com/request-forms/shore-excursion-best-price-guarantee.aspx

If you do want to book through Carnival, there is an opportunity for a price match. I confirmed with someone on my cruise that Carnival is still price matching this   excursion   with this   non-Carnival excursion   and receiving 110% of the difference ($33 per person) in OBC.

If I didn’t care about doing all 27 waterfalls, I would probably book the Carnival excursion either with a 10% off Carnival gift card or with my Carnival Mastercard which gives me 10% back on Carnival excursions and would bring the price down to $80.99. Then with the price match I would receive $33 in onboard credit.

6 Things To Love About Gorgeous Amber Cove

A mber Cove is a gorgeous, 25-acre cruise port complex in the city of Puerto Plata. It lies on the Maimon Bay in the Dominican Republic. If you were to land right in the northern center of the island, shared by Haiti and the Dominican Republic, you would be at Amber Cove.

This magnificent, $85 million cruise port was designed by Carnival Corporation to house their fleet of cruise ships for overnights and cruise excursions. It revitalized cruise travel to the Dominican Republic for the first time in over 30 years. You must be a passenger or authorized employee with a valid ship ID card to visit the Amber Cove cruise port.

Amber Cove is an excellent place to relax and unwind on 30 acres of waterfront property, plus enjoy the incredible swimming pools free of charge. There are plenty of things to keep you busy, and it is deemed very safe. While you can go into the Dominican Republic on your own or via the ship’s hosted excursions, there is actually quite a lot to see and do right here.

I first visited Amber Cove back in 2015 for multiple overnights with Fathom Cruises, Carnival’s former social impact cruise aimed at promoting volunteerism — a way of giving back to the places you travel to. While there, my husband and I taught English, planted cacao seeds, worked at a chocolate factory, and paved dirt floors in local homes. We have even kept in touch with the families we met during English lessons.

Since then, I have visited the Dominican twice as a guest of Carnival Cruise Line and, most recently, with Holland America . Carnival Corporation allows all of its cruise lines, including Holland America, Carnival Cruises, and Princess Cruises , to use Amber Cove’s superb facilities. In typical times, the cruise port sees 8,000 guests per day and 2,000 crew members.

1. Sunbathing And Swimming

Amber Cove’s Aqua Zone is where you will find the attractive swimming pools. Expect hundreds, if not thousands, of comfy sun loungers, a gorgeous landscape with palm trees around the pools, and a separate children’s splash area. There are hammocks to relax in under the trees, and a Nathan’s hot dog stand, which seemed to be a real crowd-pleaser on my visits. Again, the use of Aqua Zone is free of charge.

Private cabanas can be rented at Amber Cove, and get this: They are air-conditioned. Tahitian-style cabanas also include snacks, drinks, Wi-Fi, and complimentary zip line passes for your entire party. Some cabanas even hold 20 people. You can choose hillside, poolside, or overwater locations for your cabana rental. The overwater ones, pale in color, are picture-perfect.

The most popular attraction at the Aqua Zone would have to be the swim-up bar. Choose your favorite beer, wine, or tropical drink from the menu, then enjoy sipping on your adult beverage as you soak up the sun and enjoy the warm water. My favorite drink is so predictable, but it’s hard to beat a good piña colada with scenery like this. Waiters come by your chairs, too, to take your drink and food orders.

2. Ziplining

It seems doubtful that you would expect to zip-line right over the central focal point of the Aqua Zone, but here it is — and it is so much fun! If you’ve never tried zip-lining, this one is easy, and you can ride the twin 650-foot zips as much as you want for around $20 per day. Kids receive a discounted rate.

Also, Sky Bar is at the top of the hill where the zip-line begins. This fun and popular bar offers stellar 360-degree views of the cruise port while quenching your thirst.

Editor’s Note: Never taken to the wires? Here are some things to know before your first zip-lining trip .

3. The DR’s Mesmerizing Beaches

The Dominican Republic’s beaches are exquisite. The closest one is Maimon, a fifteen-minute walk from the cruise port. Be sure to have your cruise card and a valid ID with you before embarking on the journey. Maimon is perfect for relaxing in the soft sand, reading a book, taking a nap, or cooling off in the water.

If you don’t mind springing for a taxi, I recommend Sosua Beach, about 30 minutes away from the port and minutes from historic downtown Puerto Plata. The water is stunning, with layers of blues, and it is a decent spot for snorkeling, which isn’t too strenuous at this beach. There are places you can rent jet-skis, too. A little further away is Cabarete Bay, great for watching kites and wind-surfers and seeing huge waves.

Pro Tip: Please do not pet the stray dogs; they are not pets as we know them here in the U.S.

4. Amber Cove’s Shopping And Scenery

The Amber Cove cruise port is a beautiful place to stroll around and is only steps from the ship. There are free tandem bike rides for those who need a little help getting to and from the ship. At the pier, take in the colorful Dominican carnival masks on display — they’re great for photo-ops. There is also a man-made waterfall that makes for an excellent backdrop, especially for those who can’t travel to Damajagua Waterfalls, the premier attraction in Puerto Plata.

Listen for the talented musicians scattered around the cruise port or in the transportation hub. They play relaxing island music or the local preference, merengue.

You will find quite good shopping at Amber Cove, and best of all, it is duty-free. I’m guessing there are a couple dozen shops with everything from jewelry, accessories, souvenirs, alcohol, Cuban cigars, and handmade goods. You can also rent cars at one of the shops and browse the Yvon International art gallery. As with all cruise ports, Diamonds International is one of the heavy hitters, with a lovely selection of high-end jewelry and many name brands.

Be on the lookout for larimar, a cloudy blue stone that is found in the Dominican Republic. Amber is another treasure found here, and you will see it in abundance.

Chocolate and coffee are both tasty Dominican treats. The chocolate melts quickly, so I would not recommend taking it home as a souvenir if the weather is overly warm. However, it’s great to bring back on the ship with you for those late-night sweet cravings.

Then there is the sign: a fun and cool sign with Amber Cove spelled out in giant letters. The cruise ship adds a nice backdrop to the already great setting. While the Amber Cove photo opportunity is pretty during the day, you should see it all lit up at night. Wow!

5. Eating Local

When traveling, I always make it a point to indulge in the local cuisine. And at Coco Cana Lounge , you’ll have the perfect opportunity to do just that. With two amazing locations in Amber Cove, both just a short walk from each other, you can choose the one that offers the most captivating view.

Once you’re there, get ready to be amazed by their diverse menu, tantalizing drinks, impeccable service, and even free Wi-Fi! The flavors of Dominican cuisine will take you on a culinary journey, blending Spanish, African, and Taino influences. From mouthwatering meat stews to delectable plantains and seafood, there’s something to satisfy every palate. And don’t forget to try the national beer, Presidente, a refreshing lager that perfectly complements the vibrant spirit of the Caribbean.

While cruising, I tend to miss Latin food and am happy to get my fix of it at Coco Cana. I’ve had the chicken nachos, fajitas, and fish tacos, but they also have juicy burgers, fresh salads, and French fries, my husband’s weakness. You’ll also find a tasty, strong cup of coffee here. I go for the cortadito or a double shot of espresso.

6. Outside The Amber Cove Cruise Port

Your cruise ship will offer several excursions deeper into the Dominican Republic. Golf, waterfalls, and natural scenery are abundant, so partake in as many as you’d like.

The Dominican Republic has a fascinating history and is the most visited Caribbean country. I have taken a taxi where my driver acted as a tour guide through the historic Santo Domingo Colonial Zone. If memory serves me correctly, my friends and I paid $20 each for three hours of touring, and he took us to the best points of interest.

The Colonial Zone is a handsome area with jaw-dropping architecture, stately plazas, and churches dating back to the 15th century. This area is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and is where the first cathedral, hospital, and university in the Americas was built.

Other options for your day of exploring the Dominican Republic include the Brugal Rum factory , Amber World Museum , and shopping for local handicrafts at the sidewalk stalls. I have picked up some incredible art pieces at these kiosks for under $75. You are welcome to barter the prices listed.

The 5 best destinations you can visit on a Carnival Cruise Line ship

Gene Sloan

Some cruise lines offer voyages to every corner of the world. Others are more focused on where they operate.

Carnival Cruise Line , one of the world's largest cruise brands, is firmly in the second category.

Carnival is all about relatively short, affordable cruises from U.S. ports. You'll find at least one of its ships sailing out of pretty much every major port city around the country, but it's rare to find them based anywhere else.

For more cruise guides, news and tips, sign up for TPG's cruise newsletter .

Catering heavily to budget travelers who reach its ships by car, Carnival rarely offers voyages in Europe, Asia and South America — destinations that are much more integral to the schedules of such rival lines as Royal Caribbean , Norwegian Cruise Line , Princess Cruises and Holland America .

However, Carnival is the undisputed leader in cruises out of U.S. ports to the Caribbean and the Bahamas, with a wide range of sailings to the regions from ports on the East Coast and along the Gulf of Mexico.

Some of Carnival's East Coast-based ships also sail to Bermuda, New England and Canada. For Carnival ships based on the West Coast, sailings to Mexico, Hawaii and Alaska are the norm.

Carnival also offers some Panama Canal voyages.

Related: The ultimate guide to Carnival Cruise Line ships and itineraries

The overarching idea for Carnival's ship deployments is that a large percentage of the U.S. population can reach one of the line's vessels by car, saving the cost of flights. For that reason, it takes a much broader approach to ship deployments around the U.S. than other lines.

Carnival's biggest operations are out of PortMiami and Port Canaveral in Florida; Galveston, Texas; Long Beach, California; New Orleans; and Seattle — all major cruise hubs. You'll also find Carnival ships in secondary cruise ship ports such as Baltimore; Charleston, South Carolina; Mobile, Alabama; Jacksonville and Tampa in Florida; and San Francisco.

For the most part, Carnival ships sail relatively short voyages of three to eight nights.

Here's our take on the five best places Carnival sails.

The Caribbean and the Bahamas

carnival magic amber cove excursions

Carnival is, quite simply, the king of Caribbean and Bahamas cruises. If you're looking for a quick, easy and — perhaps most importantly — very affordable cruise getaway to the region, Carnival is your line.

Carnival currently has 22 of its 27 ships — including its newest and biggest ships, 5,282-passenger Mardi Gras and sister vessels Carnival Celebration and Carnival Jubilee — scheduled to sail to the Caribbean and the Bahamas for at least part of the coming year.

To put that in perspective, that's more ships than exist in the entire fleet of Norwegian Cruise Line, which itself is a major player in Caribbean cruises.

Carnival offers a broad range of Caribbean and Bahamas itineraries from no fewer than 11 U.S. ports.

If you're looking for something short, the line has you covered in the form of quick three- to five-night trips to the Caribbean and the Bahamas from Florida ports such as Miami, Tampa, Jacksonville and Port Canaveral, as well as from Mobile, New Orleans and Galveston.

Itineraries from the eastern ports often include stops in the Bahamas and at Grand Turk Island in Turks and Caicos. From the Gulf ports, they often focus heavily on the ports of Mexico's Yucatan Peninsula, including Cozumel and Progreso.

Carnival is also big in the market for six- to eight-night sailings to Caribbean and Bahamas ports, which break down into three broad categories:

  • Eastern Caribbean voyages
  • Western Caribbean voyages
  • Southern Caribbean voyages

A typical seven-night Carnival sailing to the Eastern Caribbean includes stops in San Juan, Puerto Rico; St. Thomas, U.S. Virgin Islands; Amber Cove, Dominican Republic; and Grand Turk in Turks and Caicos.

However, each of Carnival's six- to eight-night Eastern Caribbean itineraries is a little different. There are typically three and sometimes four calls on these Eastern Caribbean cruises.

Carnival's six- to eight-night Western Caribbean voyages will typically include three or four stops in some mix of the following destinations: Mexico (Cozumel and Costa Maya), Honduras, Jamaica, Grand Cayman and Belize.

The line's Southern Caribbean itineraries — typically eight nights in length — will often bring visits to Aruba and Curacao, as well as one or more northerly Caribbean ports such as Amber Cove in the Dominican Republic.

Carnival also offers a handful of longer 10- to 14-night sailings in the Caribbean, but not many.

The Mexican Riviera

carnival magic amber cove excursions

Carnival is one of the leaders in cruises to the Mexican Riviera — the string of resort towns running down the west coast of Mexico.

Carnival operates cruises to the west coast of Mexico out of the California ports of Long Beach and San Francisco, with Long Beach being its main West Coast hub.

Notably, Carnival is one of just two cruise lines to base ships in the Los Angeles area year-round for voyages to Mexico ( the other is Royal Caribbean ). One of the line's newest vessels, the 4,008-passenger Carnival Panorama, is based year-round in Long Beach for six- to eight-night Mexican Riviera voyages. The smaller 2,764-passenger Carnival Radiance operates three- to six-night trips out of Long Beach to Mexico for most of the year (it also offers some sailings to Hawaii).

A third Carnival ship, the 4,125-passenger Carnival Firenze , operates four- to seven-night sailings to Mexico out of Long Beach year-round.

The typical seven-night Carnival voyage to the Mexican Riviera brings stops in Cabo San Lucas, Mazatlan and Puerto Vallarta.

Three- and four-night Carnival trips to the west coast of Mexico typically only feature a single Mexico call in Ensenada and, at times, a stop at Catalina Island off the coast of California.

Carnival isn't the biggest player in Alaska cruises. The giants of cruising to Alaska are Princess Cruises and Holland America, which are sister lines to Carnival that control a large percentage of the market. Still, Carnival has sent more vessels to Alaska in recent years than in the past, and for the coming year, it has three ships sailing to the destination.

Carnival's fun-focused, affordable ships are a popular pick with families looking to visit Alaska during the short Alaska cruise season that lasts roughly from May to September.

For 2025, Carnival plans to deploy the following ships to the Alaska market:

  • Carnival Luminosa : The 16-year-old vessel will operate seven-night voyages to Alaska round-trip out of Seattle. Most departures will feature calls at Skagway, Juneau and Ketchikan, Alaska; and Victoria, British Columbia. It also will visit the Tracy Arm fjord in Alaska for glacier viewing. A few sailings have a slightly different lineup of ports.
  • Carnival Legend : The 21-year-old vessel will operate 10-night voyages to Alaska round-trip out of San Francisco. It will call at Skagway, Juneau and Icy Strait Point in Alaska and Victoria, British Columbia. It also will visit Tracy Arm for glacier viewing.
  • Carnival Spirit : The 24-year-old vessel will mostly operate seven-night voyages to Alaska round-trip from Seattle. It will call at Skagway, Juneau and Ketchikan, Alaska; and Victoria, British Columbia. It also will visit Tracy Arm for glacier viewing.

Unlike some lines such as Princess, Holland America and Royal Caribbean, Carnival does not offer Alaska cruisetours that combine an Alaska cruise with multiple days of overland touring.

At least a couple of Carnival ships typically sail to Bermuda every year between May and October.

While the line doesn't offer a huge number of Bermuda departures, it usually operates Bermuda trips out of at least three ports every year: New York, Baltimore and Norfolk, Virginia.

Most of the sailings are six or seven nights in length and include two or three days in Bermuda. The line also typically offers some shorter four- and five-night Bermuda sailings.

Note that the shorter Bermuda sailings can offer very little time in the country, sometimes as little as eight hours.

For 2025, Carnival is offering sailings to Bermuda on three ships: the 3,002-passenger Carnival Sunshine, the 2,124-passenger Carnival Pride and the 4,208-passenger Carnival Venezia . The latter ship is a Costa Cruises vessel that Carnival began operating in May 2023 . Costa is a sister line to Carnival with similarly designed ships.

carnival magic amber cove excursions

Carnival may be all about cruises from U.S. ports, but not all its vessels always are based in North America.

In what might seem like an unusual diversion for a line known for short, easy-to-reach, affordable voyages for Americans, Carnival has deployed two of its vessels to Australia in recent years to operate trips from Sydney and Brisbane.

The two ships — most recently 2,260-passenger Carnival Luminosa and 3,012-passenger Carnival Splendor — typically operate a mix of three- to 10-night sailings along the Australian coast and to New Zealand.

Carnival's Australia trips, notably, aren't really aimed at Americans. They're aimed at Australians. A few years ago, Carnival discovered that Australians love the sort of fun-focused, affordable cruises it offers just as much as Americans, and it set out to build a business in Australia catering to them.

That doesn't mean an American can't book one of the trips.

The typical Carnival cruise along the coast of Australia includes stops at Airlie Beach, Cairns and Willis Island. Some longer Australia voyages add in stops at Port Douglas or Moreton Island.

Shorter Australia voyages might include a stop at just one of the above destinations or even no stops at all — a so-called "cruise to nowhere."

Carnival is likely to grow its operations in Australia over the coming years. Earlier this year, the line announced it soon would absorb two Australia-based vessels currently operated by P&O Cruises Australia. The latter is an Australia-focused cruise line that is owned by the same parent company as Carnival.

The two ships — 2,636-passenger Pacific Adventure and 2,600-passenger Pacific Encounter — will transfer to the Carnival fleet in 2025, and executives have hinted they will remain in Australia to cater mostly to Australian vacationers.

Other attractions include the Miami Seaquarium , Miami MetroZoo, and sports teams the Dolphins, Heat and Marlins. No wonder so many celebrities, such as Gloria Estefan, Madonna and Ricky Martin, call Miami home.

Take advantage of the many on board activites during your day at sea. You'll have more than enough to fill your day!

Blessed with a non-stop breeze, neat little Oranjestad reflects the Dutch passion for cleanliness. Stroll the town's chic shops, venture out to see the wind-formed divi-divi trees, or visit an undersea garden of brilliant corals on a semi-submersible craft.

Hospitable and always sunny, Curacao bids you a warm welcome. The friendly inhabitants, first class hotels, wonderful climate, crystal clear seawater, fascinating architecture, floating market, pontoon bridge, secluded bays, rich fauna and flora, and the many possibilities for excursions and entertainment make Curacao the tourist's paradise.

Carnival’s Alchemy Bar Full Menu With Prices

Never heard of the Alchemy Bar aboard Carnival’s ships? It’s a cocktail bar hosted by “mixologists.” The bar offers up tasty concoctions that seem more at place in a trendy 1920s New York bar than on a cruise ship. It’s not meant to be a party atmosphere filled with beachy drinks but a classy place to experiment with different flavors in a warm, comfortable setting.

Meanwhile, you won’t find your typical Bud Light or margarita on the menu. Instead, get your tastebuds ready for drinks like a mojito martini or a peach cosmopolitan. Alchemy Bar is most definitely a place that you should expect to sit and relax for a bit — not just grab a drink to take to the pool.

To help get you ready for your next cruise, we’ve got the entire Alchemy Bar menu and prices below.
